Rose X-Lite CW-4000 first ride review

Highlights from the London Bike Show

I was recently invited to Rose's hometown of Bocholt, Germany for the launch of the updated X-Lite, the brand's top-end race platform.

Rose claims to have found "the golden ratio with the new X-Lite," striking the "perfect balance between aerodynamics, a lightweight design, stiffness and comfort." Bold words indeed. So how does the German direct-sale giant claim to have achieved this?

Rose X-Lite updates

Starting with the aero-conscious improvements, the area around the head tube and the seatstays has been slimmed down considerably compared to the previous generation of the X-Lite. The forks have also been redesigned to be more aerodynamic and lighter than before.

As is expected of any modern, slippery go-fast bike, the new X-Lite has its own nifty integrated seat clamp — unlike some other designs, this is actually very easy to access, with the 4mm head Allen-bolt sitting flush with the frame.

Rose claims that the new bike will require 63.5 of your precious watts to push it through the air, a claimed 11-watt saving over the previous generation of the X-Lite. The speed at which these tests were carried out was not specified, however.

6x lite tour test

The X-Lite 6 is the top-end layup option for the bike

In terms of weight loss, the new X-Lite 6 — the top-end layup option for the X-Lite — comes in as follows;

  • Rim brake frame: 760g
  • Rim brake fork: 325g
  • Disc brake frame: 790g
  • Disc brake fork: 365g

These figures are claimed weights and relate to a 55cm frame. The X-Lite 4 frameset — which uses a slightly less refined layup — comes in 100g heavier for both rim and disc bikes. The X-Lite 4 and 6 framesets share the same geometry.

6x lite tour test

It's good to finally see Shimano's heavily vented rotors in the wild

Rose is of the opinion that discs will inevitably become dominant in the future, but understands that the market still has a real appetite for rim brakes, hence why it is still offering the X-Lite in both flavours.

In a seriously German twist of events, stiffness values were actually quoted during the presentation for the bike (German bike magazines/websites are famously obsessed with stiffness values). No woolly statements about the bike being 'X percent stiffer', actual numbers. The claimed stiffness values and weights of each frame size can be seen in the table below:

6x lite tour test

Remarkably, Rose actually supplied claimed stiffness figures during the presentation for the new X-Lite

Of course these figures should still be taken with a pinch of salt, but it's certainly a step in the right direction.

6x lite tour test

Rose claims its updated fork is lighter than before and includes a kevlar weave in the steerer to improve stiffness and longevity

In a bid to improve stiffness and longevity, Rose has included also a kevlar inlay in the steerer of the new fork.

The concessions made towards comfort present nothing groundbreaking — a sloping top tube is employed to expose as much seatpost as possible and low-slung seatstays should improve rear end compliance.

The disc version of the bike has clearances for tyres up to 30mm wide and 28mm on the rim brake model.

In line with wider industry trends, Rose is in the process of developing its own integrated one-piece cockpit to accompany the X-Lite. There were no samples available for us to fondle, but I was assured that this has been in development in conjunction with Ritchey for the past year and a half and Rose expects to put it into production soon.

Rose X-Lite range overview

The range starts with the X-Lite 4 rim brake at €2,299. This Ultegra equipped bike comes in bang on the UCI weight limit at 6.8kg (claimed). The Ultegra disc version of this bike comes in at €2,799.

The very, very highest, tip-top-end bike, which is equipped with Dura-Ace Di2, a matching FC-9100-P power meter and Zipp 454 SW wheels comes in at a heady €9,066.

Rose's bikes are largely built to order, so the option to customise bar width, stem length, wheels, cassettes and other options is available.

The new X-Lite is expected to ship from Rose within the next 3–6 weeks.

Rose X-Lite 6 disc first ride impressions

Our short test ride took in a very pleasant 45km loop on the bucolic flat landscape around Rose's hometown, Bocholt.

6x lite tour test

Our ride took us on a wet and windy loop on the flat roads around Bocholt

What the day was lacking in elevation gain was more than made up for in savage headwinds, grim weather and riding with a group of skinny cycling journalists that were keen to move fast and keep warm.

6x lite tour test

The bike felt plenty stiff under my middling power and weight

Spinning along at a fair old clip, the bike felt spritely and, during playful sprints to catch the photographer's car, sufficiently stiff under my middling power. Comfort is good for a race bike, with the carbon cockpit and skinny fork legs likely playing a part in improving compliance.

6x lite tour test

Rose earns serious brownie points for speccing appropriately reachy bars

On the subject of the cockpit, Rose earns a gold star for speccing the X-Lite with a set of relatively reachy Ritchey Superlogic bars — I like to have room to move around on a race bike and hate the way more compact handlebars smoosh your hands up when you're in the drops.

The longer reach also gives a much more comfortable platform for your palms to sit on when riding on the hoods.

The rest of the finishing kit also comes courtesy of Ritchey and I've no doubt the skinny 27.2mm carbon post plays a part in maximising rear-end comfort.

6x lite tour test

Changeable weather kept us on our toes

The route didn't offer many opportunities to go full 'knee down Moto GP', but on the wet and debris-strewn corners that we did encounter the bike's racy geometry, coupled with Continental's universally loved 25mm wide GP4000 S-II tyres, were a suitably confidence inspiring combination.

If I was ordering the bike for myself I'd definitely take full advantage of the X-Lite's generous clearances and squeeze a set of 28 or 30mm tyres in there to improve comfort, handling and speed.

6x lite tour test

The wheels felt perfectly fast and stiff, but suffered a little in cross winds

The bike is equipped with Rose's own mid-depth, tubeless-compatible carbon wheels. These felt plenty fast and stiff, but were definitely less stable in gusty side winds than wheels of a similar depth that I've used before — emerging from tree cover or from behind a building caused a relatively distracting 'tug' at the bars.

6x lite tour test

My test bike was built around an Ultegra Di2 drivetrain

I've spent a lot of time on Shimano's new-ish Ultegra R8000 groupset, but this was my first time riding on the Di2 version — unsurprisingly, the performance was flawless and I particularly appreciated the redesigned shifter paddles, which felt much better with my big winter gloves than the previous generation of the groupset.

Rose X-Lite 6 disc early verdict

I've only spent a short amount of time on the new X-Lite 6 and I'd want to ride in the hills before I draw any final conclusions about the bike, but early impressions are good — the build presents excellent value for money, the frameset is very nicely designed and it looks damn good.

We're hoping to get one of the new bikes in for test soon, so keep your eyes peeled for a full review in a few months' time!

racing bikes: Test: Rose X-Lite SIX Disc – light-footed on the go!

6 Maj 2019 by Florian Nowak

6x lite tour test

Test: The Rose X-Lite SIX Disc represents a little bit of a new era for the German bike manufacturer from Bocholt. Because as one of the new models, it embodies the most modern frame shape with a new design and Rose lettering and also has the best technical properties. We were able to test the Rose X-Lite SIX Disc for you this spring.

6x lite tour test

Rose X-Lite SIX Disc – The frame

The frame of the Rose X-Lite SIX Disc comes in an elegant matt black finish with a subtle lettering on the down tube. The frame shape is strongly based on the current standard and knows how to implement it skilfully. The top tube is slightly looped (rising), while the bulbous down tube is supposed to ensure better aerodynamics. This is a little thicker from the bottom bracket to the head tube, which ensures a beautiful and individual look. With the slightly lower seat stays on the rear triangle, the aim is to offer better comfort by reducing impacts and impacts and not passing them directly on to the driver!

6x lite tour test

Rose X-Lite SIX Disc – The features

The equipment of our Rose X-Lite SIX Disc is also impressive. With a complete Shimano Dura-Ace Di2 group, you offer one of the highest quality circuits on the market for precise and fast shifting. When it comes to the wheels, they use in-house Rose carbon wheels laced in Germany. As the name suggests, the RC Forty at the front and RC Fifty at the rear offer rim heights of 40 and 50 millimeters for a successful mixture of light weight and speed. Thanks to their coordinated, bulbous profile, the rims generate low air resistance and reduce annoying steering forces in strong crosswinds.

6x lite tour test

The wheels are fitted with 25 mm wide Conti Grand Prix 5000 tires that deliver perfect all-round performance, regardless of whether it's rolling resistance or grip. The fork and the rear end are designed in such a way that tires up to 30 millimeters pass through without any problems. The discs, which can shine with a lot of steam in any conditions, also contribute to additional safety and a pleasant driving experience. The lightweight Superlogic Carbon Eco Curve racing handlebars and the shock-absorbing Superlogic Link Flexlogic seat post from Ritchey complete the high-quality racer.

6x lite tour test

Rose X-Lite SIX Disc – That's how it rides

6x lite tour test

With the Rose X-Lite SIX Disc, after just a few kilometers we could see that the name suffix is Lite Program. But we don't mean that in a negative way in the sense of inferior but rather in the sense of lightweight. At quite a few meters in altitude, we were able to put the Rose to the test and convince ourselves of its impressive climbing properties. Not only the good total weight of 6,9 kilos, but also the great power transmission, which is favored by solid rigidity, contribute to this. After our climb, we continued with a brisk descent, where we were able to benefit from the impressive handling of the X-Lite. Everything fits together here: The discs complement the Conti 5000 ideally for safe driving fun and the frame including the wheels does the rest by being able to be steered precisely and calmly.

6x lite tour test

On flatter passages where you really have to step on the gas, the Rose is a good all-rounder, which of course cannot quite keep up with the performance of pure aero racers. Nevertheless, thanks to the in-house Rose wheels and the sporty frame, you can have a lot of fun and really step on the gas. The acceleration of the X-Lite SIX Disc is particularly pleasant, since the low weight means that you quickly regain speed and the rigidity means that little power is lost when accelerating.

6x lite tour test

Conclusion: Rose X-Lite Six Disc Dura Ace Di2

6x lite tour test

  • Great climbing properties
  • Precise handling
  • High quality equipment

First ride review of the 2023 ROSE XLITE 06 RED eTap – An all-round race bike with top-end spec at an unbeatable price?

6x lite tour test

Introducing the 2023 ROSE XLITE 06 RED eTap. Priced at €8,199 for the flagship model, the all-round race bike promises to strike the perfect balance between weight and aerodynamics. ROSE went all out on the 2023 model, designing a new frame, wheels and a one-piece carbon cockpit. Has all their work paid off?

6x lite tour test

The 2023 ROSE XLITE 06 RED eTap is touted as an all-round race bike featuring the latest trends of this segment. With its dropped seat stays, complete integration, one-piece cockpit, D-shaped seat post with an integrated clamp and the tubeless-ready wheels, the bike is quite the looker. The disc brakes and electronic shifting are hardly worth mentioning in this segment.

6x lite tour test

When the German omnichannel brand sent us their new bike, we were pleasantly surprised as we unpacked it. The 2023 ROSE XLITE 06 RED eTap made a good first impression. It features clean lines, beautiful wheels, complete integration, and a nice colour scheme with discreet yet clearly present decals, leaving us with one thought: how does it ride?

6x lite tour test

The 2023 XLITE 06 RED eTap is marketed as an all-round that’s both light and aerodynamic. Whether you live in the mountains or lowlands, it promises to deliver on a wide variety of terrain. As such, the ROSE is in direct competition with the popular Specialized S-Works Tarmac SL7 (review here) , and it looks very similar too.

Comparing the new 2023 XLITE 06 with the previous 2020 X-LITE SIX

Since the 2023 XLITE 06 RED eTap looks completely different from its predecessor, the X-LITE SIX SRAM RED eTap (review here) , we thought we’d take a closer look at the differences and similarities. The frame and design are entirely new, with ROSE choosing bright colours and a very sporty look. The internal cable on the electric models featuring SRAM’s wireless groupset is very neat, clamping the brake lines to the bottom of the handlebar before routing them into the frame. You only see a short piece of the brake lines where they exit the frame just before the brake callipers. A significant improvement from the previous model.

6x lite tour test

While being more aerodynamic, the 2023 XLITE 06 is 400 g heavier than its predecessor, which isn’t something you see often on new models. The old X-LITE SIX with the SRAM RED eTap groupset weighed in at just 6.9 kg in size 57, whereas the 2023 06 RED eTap weighs 7.3 kg in the same size. The added weight is predominantly due to the deep profile rims and wider tires. According to ROSE, the size 50 frame of the old ROSE X-LITE SIX weighs 790 g while the XLITE SIX tips the scales at 825 g. The respective smaller siblings aka cheaper models also show the same behaviour: The old X-LITE FOUR weighs 890 g, while the scale of the new XLITE 04 stops at 950 g. There’s a clear struggle between weight and aerodynamics going on here.

6x lite tour test

They’ve also made changes to the geometry. Compared to the previous model, we were struck by the 13 mm shorter top tube, measuring 558 mm in size 57. The stack height has also been reduced by 15 mm, coming in at 557 mm. The seat and head tube angles have remained the same. Likewise, the maximum payload will still accommodate riders weighing up to 110 kg. However, the maximum tire width has been increased to 32 mm. Wider tires offer improved comfort, resulting in less fatigue, and they’re also claimed to roll quicker while feeling more confidence-inspiring through the corners. ROSE are right on trend.

6x lite tour test

The ROSE XLITE 06 and its in-house components

ROSE no longer just make their own frames and forks and build their bikes in Germany; they’ve expanded their expertise to include the designing of components. On the XLITE, they’re relying on in-house components for the handlebar, wheels, and seat post. They make a good first impression and help keep the price as competitive as it is.

6x lite tour test

Take the ROSE RC SIXTY carbon wheels, for example, which feature on 4 out of the 5 available builds. They’re 60 mm deep, have an internal width of 21 mm, are tubeless-ready and are paired with NEWMEN hubs. The carbon rims are laced to the hubs with Sapim CX-Ray spokes and have internal nipples. Moreover, they have an asymmetric profile to balance out the one-sided braking forces. According to ROSE, the set weighs 1620 g. The XLITE 04 is available with ROSE R Thirty Disc or ROSE R Thirty Disc Light wheels made from aluminium. The standard version weighs 1650 g for the set while the Light version comes in at 1550 g. Both wheelset options are laced to NEWMEN hubs and feature a profile height and internal rim width of 19 and 31 mm respectively. Their only drawback is the less aerodynamic, shallow profile. Here, on the one hand, the aerodynamic advantage compared to the higher rims is foregone, but this can benefit driving stability in crosswinds. On the other hand, the smaller inner rim width provides less support for wide tyres, i.e. especially if you mount 32C tyres, they will start to waltz sooner than with the RC SIXTY rims with 2 mm wider inner rim width.

6x lite tour test

The one-piece ROSE Race Carbon cockpit feels nice to the touch, especially if you like the feel of raw carbon. However, the aero cockpit is reserved for the ROSE XLITE 06 series with electronic shifting as the XLITE 04 series comes fitted with a classic two-piece stem and handlebar. According to ROSE, the one-piece Race Carbon cockpit complies with stringent safety standards (Zedler Adv+) and the 110/420 mm version weighs just 395 g. It’s available in four sizes that depend on frame size. To put the rider in an aggressive position, the stem is angled at -9°. The drop-bar has a reach of 83 mm, paired with a 130 mm drop and an astounding 3° flare. While this used to be restricted to the gravel bike scene, we’re seeing it pop up on more and more road bikes. With the drops flared slightly outwards, you’ve got more control and stability in that position. The tops, on the other hand, are narrower, making that position slightly more aerodynamic than with a standard handlebar.

6x lite tour test

Moreover, ROSE claim that the one-piece cockpit is easy to remove and doesn’t require you to disconnect the brake lines. Speaking of which, the ROSE XLITE is easy to put together once it arrives and doesn’t require any special know-how. All you have to do is turn the handlebar, instal the wheels, insert the seat post and screw on the pedals. The one-piece cockpit comes with a mount for your GPS device, offering an adjustable angle and a GoPro mount on the bottom. Cool!

6x lite tour test

The carbon seat post is D-shaped, matching the shape of the frame tubes and underlining the fast look of the 2023 XLITE 06 as well as the XLITE 04.

6x lite tour test

Components of the 2023 ROSE XLITE 06 RED eTap and other builds

The ROSE XLITE is available in a total of 9 builds, with sizes ranging from 50–62. Four of them are part of the XLITE 04 range, which rely on the heavier T30/40 HM/HT carbon layup, whereas the remaining five XLITE 06 models benefit from the lighter T40/60 UHM/HT carbon frame.

6x lite tour test

We tested the size 57 of the 2023 XLITE 06 RED eTap in the Borealis Green/Chalk colourway in size 57, and there was nothing to complain about regarding the SRAM RED eTap AXS drivetrain on the flagship model. Shimano fans will be happy to hear that there’s a DURA-ACE option too. That said, the eTap drivetrain offers precise, reliable and almost silent shifting. The brakes are easy to modulate and instil you with confidence.

6x lite tour test

Considering the target group of the 2023 XLITE 06, it would have been nice if there was a power metre included, which isn’t the case, unfortunately. If this is something you need, you could retrofit the SRAM RED AXS Power Meter Kit for an additional €650.

6x lite tour test

The claimed weight of the ROSE XLITE 06 is between 6.9 and 7.3 kg in size 50. The ULTEGRA groupset which costs 4,199€ is available with the ROSE R Thirty Disc Light wheelset and the two-piece cockpit consisting of a Ritchey Comp Streem II handlebar and a ROSE Square stem. The Shimano DURA-ACE Di2, Shimano ULTEGRA Di2, SRAM FORCE eTap AXS and SRAM RED eTap AXS groupsets are available with the 60 mm deep ROSE RC SIXTY carbon wheels, which are fitted with 28C Schwalbe Pro One TT tires featuring the retro tan wall look. These variants all come with the one-piece ROSE Race Carbon cockpit and the Fizik Antares Versus Evo R5 saddle. The ROSE XLITE 06 is available in Borealis Green/Chalk or matt carbon.

6x lite tour test

The ROSE XLITE 04 is claimed to weigh between 7.3 and 8.1 kg in size 50, it rolls on 28C Continental GP 5000 tires, and they’ve decided to stick with the Fizik Antares Versus Evo R5 for the saddle. Depending on the model, you can choose between the mechanical Shimano 105 or ULTEGRA groupsets or the electronic Shimano ULTEGRA Di2 or SRAM FORCE eTap AXS groupsets. The available colours include Chalk, Bottermelk and Aggro Papaya.

6x lite tour test

Pricing for the 2023 XLITE 06 ranges from €4,199 to €8,199. Its small brother, the XLITE 04 featuring the heavier carbon layup and more affordable spec ranges in price from €2,999 to €4,79. Due to supply chain issues, you will have to wait until autumn this year for the ROSE XLITE 06 models featuring the one-piece ROSE Race Carbon cockpit. Fortunately, some of the ROSE XLITE 04 models that rely on mechanical groupsets like the Shimano 105 or ULTEGRA are in stock and ready to be shipped.

The geometry of the 2023 XLITE 06 RED eTap is clearly aimed at sporty and performance-oriented riders. Sitting on the bike, you’ve got to bend over low to reach the bars since there are zero spacers beneath the stem, making for a low cockpit and an aerodynamic riding position. This position is amplified by the shorter top tube compared to the predecessor.

How does it ride? The 2023 ROSE XLITE 06 RED eTap in review

The moment you climb aboard the 2023 ROSE XLITE and step on the pedals, you’ll hear the buzzing of the 60 mm deep rims and feel every pedal stroke being transferred to the road, encouraging you to pedal even harder and feel the wind in your hair.

6x lite tour test

The XLITE is a road bike that does exactly what it should – it’s fast and efficient. As soon as you get up out of the saddle to sprint, the bike responds accordingly and surges forward, which is largely down to the frame’s ample stiffness. Due to the somewhat heavy wheels, it isn’t the quickest out the gate, though you’ll only notice then when starting from a standstill. Once you’ve got the ROSE XLITE RED eTap up to speed, it rolls along very efficiently. As such, the ROSE feels most at home on flat topography, descents and rolling hills.

6x lite tour test

Comfort and efficiency are always in a tug of war: as the one goes up, the other usually goes down. It’s no different on the 2023 ROSE XLITE, which sacrifices some comfort for more stiffness. It’s a thoroughbred race bike after all, and it hasn’t found a miraculous solution to this age-old problem. That said, it isn’t overly harsh and provides a balanced level of comfort between the front and rear. By swapping the tires for wider 32 mm models and setting them up tubeless, you can make the 2023 ROSE XLITE RED eTap quite a bit more comfortable.

6x lite tour test

However, inexperienced riders shouldn’t let themselves get put off by this since the handling of the 2023 ROSE XLITE 06 RED eTap is generally confidence-inspiring.

6x lite tour test

Tuning tip for beginners: shallower profile rims. The RED eTap brakes, the grip offered by the 28 mm Schwalbe Pro ONE TT tires and the handling all contribute to a high level of control and confidence.

6x lite tour test

Our conclusion on the 2023 ROSE XLITE 06 RED eTap

ROSE seem to have done a lot right with the new XLITE, delivering in terms of performance. The in-house components make a good impression overall and are on par with the otherwise high-end spec. As such, the 2023 ROSE XLITE 06 RED eTap is able to keep up with the more expensive high-performance bikes of its class. More than just a hanger-on, it represents an attractive entry into the aero segment, offering damn good looks and excellent performance at a fair price.

PXG’s Allan Putter introduces innovative technology aimed at helping golfers achieve greater stability and control on the greens. Featuring Zero Torque Balance Technology, the putter is designed to minimize face twisting during the stroke, helping to keep the putter face square at impact. This technology is beneficial for all stroke types, making it versatile for golfers of varying skill levels. The putter also boasts an S-hosel design for enhanced balance, a Pyramid Face Pattern to improve roll consistency, and a convenient Pick Up Pocket for easy ball retrieval on the green.

Key Features:

Zero Torque Balance Technology: Reduces the twisting of the putter face during the stroke, promoting more consistent, square impacts.

S-hosel Design: Aligns the shaft above the center of gravity, further enhancing stability and reducing the tendency for the putter face to open or close during the stroke.

Pyramid Face Pattern: A uniquely milled face pattern designed to improve the interaction between the putter and the ball, providing better distance control and a smoother roll.

Pick Up Pocket: A thoughtful design feature that allows golfers to pick up the ball easily without bending over.

Please welcome and congratulate our testers!

I apologize, I really did this all wrong. Chalk it up to a bit a rookie mistake.

Here I a bit more of an intro in to me.

Hi, My name is Cody and I live in Reno, NV

I am 44 years old and have been playing golf for going on 30 years. I started playing in high school. I was on the high school golf team and as I freshman, I remember shooting 120 and losing lots of golf balls. By my senior year I was in the low 80's. I have not improved all that much since then. lol. But, My biggest strength in golf is that in general I hit the ball pretty far. When I am hitting driver well, I tend to shoot pretty good scores. When it is off and I am left to lean on my scrambling and putting. Scores suffer.

I would say that my biggest weakness and the reason that I excited to participate in the test is putting. I have over the years really tried everything. I have left hand low'd. I have long putter'd (pre anchor ban). I have tried everything from 8802 full toe hang putters to center shafted face balanced mallets. All with various levels of success but really still leaving me wanting something else.

(stealing some images from a post a bit further down)

Here is a picture of the last two putters and the Allen Showing toe hang variations and degrees. Most recently I have been using the Toulon Seattle ( Thanks Scottie Scheffler) with a crank neck. It was working pretty well and was a step up from the 8802.

For my handicap, the Grint says that putting is a weakness with my average being around 33 putts/round with at least 1 three putt a round.

image.png.e7ab774acd1d6765cec596fd3e8cd029.png

I am really looking forward to putting the Allen to the test over the next little while and I am hoping to see that average start to work down. Looking forward to chatting with you all! If you have any kind of question, comment, criticism, or testing suggestions, please let me know! I am happy to go out and try something if it help you understand this product and decide if it is something for you!

INTRO: Hi Fellow Spies!

I would first like to thank PXG for supplying the Allan putters for our testing, and to MGS, without whom we would never get to participate in these tests.

My name is Bill Akins.  I'm married to my best friend, Hollie.  Our daughter is Jessica and has just recently graduated from UGA and is taking some time off before heading off to get her Master's degree in Nursing.  We live at Lake Lanier in Buford, GA about 35 miles north of Atlanta.  I have lived in Georgia and on the north side of Atlanta most of my life.  I moved to East Texas in the late 90's for a few years, then back to Georgia.  I moved to Colorado and started my own company, with airlines as most of our customers.  That went great until 9/11 and airlines were grounded and not spending a penny to expand their enterprise. So, back to Georgia.

For work, I am the Enterprise Cloud Architect for a large hospital system in Georgia, closely related to a university. I have been there (except when I quit and moved to Colorado) for over 25 years.  I've been golfing for only about 3 years now.  I don't get to play often, so I am still trying to break 100. I was playing in a Spark league, but the courses close to me quit participating, so my weekly game stopped. I have the good fortune of having a nice-sized area in my basement with 12' ceilings, so I built a golf simulator.

It's not only fun but helps me keep my swing.  It's a great place to blow off steam between the 382 Zoom calls I must endure daily.  And, being a tech geek, I like the gadgets and data.

Me (L) and my buddy Bill (R) just before we tee off at Heritage Golf Links in Tucker, GA.

For fun, in addition to golf, I like to be outside. I enjoy hiking with my wife.  There are a lot of places nearby and in the foothills of the North Georgia mountains for great day hikes.  Longer hikes can start out at the end of the Appalachian Trail and go as far as Maine.  I have only hiked the first 85 miles of the AT.  I was into mountain climbing for a while, but that required a lot of travel from Georgia and time away from family.  I enjoy fishing occasionally and am fortunate enough to live near a 58 sq mile lake.  We used to have a boat, but no longer.  The two happiest days of boat ownership are the day you buy your boat and the day you sell your boat!

I recently returned from a mission trip to Nicaragua to help get clean, running water to a community of >120 homes in Chinandega.  It was a lot of manual digging 3' deep ditches, 1' wide.  It was a rewarding experience and I plan to return next year.  It wasn't all hard work though, we got to climb Cerro Negro volcano.

I am looking forward to testing this Allan putter.  The balance is completely different than my putter, or any other I have tried.  I've also never been fitted for a putter before, this is exciting!  Thank you again to MGS and PXG!

The Fitting Process:

I received an email from Megan, the PXG PR Coordinator, asking when I wanted to go for my fitting.  We decided on a date and time.  I went to the PXG store in Lenox Mall, Atlanta on a Saturday, 9/14.  It is tucked in with high-end stores like Armani, Bloomingdales, and Ferragamo, to name a few.  The store has a very nice high-end feel and appearance.  They have a nice assortment of clothing, hats, and accessories.

PXG.jpg.d3646b9f03c1b9fcdd0a8396cf50f124.jpg

My fitter was Matt Russell.  Super nice guy.  He told me the story of PXG and its philosophy.  He showed me around and explained the rationale behind the Allan putter design.  I took my current putter, an Odessey OG 7 White Hot.  Matt placed my putter in a plastic tube with a pin in the top end that went into the hole in the grip.  A bottom piece wrapped around the club shaft, but allowed it to spin.  It was then slid up into the bottom of the plastic tube.  When the club was swung, you could see the face of the club turn away from the target line.  He explained how the Allan was designed and built, then performed the same procedure with the Allan.  The face of the Allan remained pointing at the target line through the swing.

swingdevice.jpg.239d3dc30f691e4e77963bd946b46c95.jpg

Not Matt, I forgot to get a picture of the swing device.   Matt got a stock Allan putter without a grip.  He put on a grip similar to my current grip that tightened with a thumb screw at the base.  We tested a few heights until we got it right.  Matt asked if I had tried a bigger grip, which I had not.  We tried a few grips before deciding on a much larger pistol grip.  We then experimented with weights in the putter head until it felt right for me.  I spent almost an hour putting and trying out grips, lenghts, and weights.

Matt explains the geometry of the Allan putter.

Sinking them like a pro!

I never felt rushed or pressured to make a decision.  Once we had decided on everything, Matt entered the order and said I would hear from them on Monday.  He asked what kind of golf ball I usually played, and I told him.  He disappeared for a minute and returned with a dozen golf balls and his "card", a poker chip/ball marker.  Very cool!

Matt's card and a dozen balls!

True to his word, I got an email Monday saying my club was being made and I would get a tracking number soon.  The following day, I got a tracking number.  The club arrived on Thursday.

:odyssey-small:

Hello all, my name is Tom. I’m a lifelong resident of Lafayette, Indiana. I like being outdoors- golf, mountain biking, and hiking are my favorite activities. It can be tough to do those things, though, because of life… I’ve been playing golf since the mid-1990s. I play when I can- maybe a time or two per month during the summer. My scores average right around 100. I’m not very competitive in my nature. I play golf to relax and have fun.

I was thrilled to receive a notification of being chosen as a tester of the PXG Allan putter! I do not have any PXG equipment. I am very aware of the brand, but honestly, the prices on their stuff are well beyond my budget. $200 to $450 for a putter? $300 to $650 for a driver? $125 for a polo shirt? Nope, sorry, that’s simply not possible for me. But man, the chance to use one of these putters that makes some great claims, now I am definitely interested in that!

The PXG website makes some impressive comments about this putter. “Technology that keeps your putter face square and on target” and “amazingly effective for players of all abilities and all stroke types” and “PXG’s new Allan Putter performs so well, it feels like magic” are the three that caught my attention. I read everything on the page about the Allan. There appear to be many options to customize the putter so that it “feels like a hand-tailored Italian suit”. I’m not big on dressing up, but I do like to customize things so that they are how I like them, so I’m getting more and more excited with this idea.

This image (it's an amimation on the PXG website) caught my attention. For me, it just makes sense. If the putter head remains perpendicular to my swing, then it seems like it will be square at the time of impact. This should result in putts going where I aim them.

PutterRotation.png.6cf90bcdb24e366ae083b06cc7c5de80.png

I looked through my stats since August of 2022. I see that I am averaging 2.1 putts per hole. I feel like I’m decent with my current Odyssey Versa 2-Ball putter. (Garmin tells me that I’m above average in this portion of my game.) It was a gift from a friend, and I really do like it. Maybe it’s partly sentimental, but I’ve made some good long-distance putts with it. He is the one that I golfed with most often. He could out-drive me, but I was able to keep things close with a better short game. He has since moved out west, but I still have the putter!

Soon I will have an experience (or is it an experiment?) like I’ve never had before. A custom fitting for a high-dollar club. The fitting has been scheduled for September 17. Temperatures (and work) are cooling off, so I am going to get out on the course to see how this putter can help my game. My wife has been driving the cart for me more lately, so I have a photographer. She also loves numbers, so she is excited to see if I can lower my putts per hole number. I’ve got a spreadsheet with some basic stats to compare the before and after.

PXL_20240917_202238121.jpg.fdc0a9a1db341c2f6436a40b7c48932d.jpg

Can the Allan live up to the hype? Lower putts per hole is the only thing that matters to me with this club. As I’ve already said, I’m excited to use the club because I consider it a high-dollar item. Does the price lead to better results? The website says very nice stuff. But, honestly, nobody is going to make a product, create a flashy website, and promote their "amazing" new item just to tell you that’s it only mediocre. Actions speak louder than words. The proof is in the pudding. “Nobody makes golf clubs the way we do. Period.” Will Allan earn a spot in my bag? We shall see!

Hello spies!

Thanks for stopping by my introduction post for the PXG Allen test.

First, I would like to start off by thanking the MGS staff for selecting me for this test. The testing opportunities on this forum are a unique way of allowing everyday golfers to test gear and share their experience without having a marketing twist to it. I’m very excited to get things started and hopefully provide some of my fellow spies with some insights on my experience with what most golfers see as PXG's response to the popularity of the L.A.B. Golf putters.

My name is Derek and I live in the North Phoenix/North Scottsdale area. As with most Arizonans, I am a Midwest transplant (Illinois). I grew up in the East Valley of the Phoenix Metro area and then spent nearly twelve years in Tucson, before finally making it back to Phoenix in 2021. When I left for college in 2009, I expected to be back in Phoenix within a few months of graduating, but Tucson has this weird Hotel California way of sucking people in. I love living in Arizona for many reasons, but one new reason is how readily living here fuels my recent obsession with golf.

IMG_6430-Copy.JPEG.94bf4f832befa334762dc49707577b10.JPEG

(Me off the coast of South Carolina April 2024)

To bank roll my increasingly troubling golf habits I work in the healthcare industry working on integration of artificial intelligence to automate financial and clinical workstreams. It is interesting work, especially since AI has just gotten to the point of being commercially viable so I get to be on the forefront of finding solutions to complex problems.

I’m a bit of a busy body so when I’m not working, I am generally doing something related to my ever-expanding list of hobbies/interests. For about three years now I’ve been training in Brazilian jiu jitsu two to three times a week. I have to say that this has helped my golf game more than I would have expected. I generally hit the driving range every weekend, and in weeks where I haven’t trained in BJJ as much I feel much stiffer and out of sync.

Enough about the boring stuff, let’s talk golf. I started playing golf in my early teens. My dad and uncle would play sometimes and introduced me to it. I never got super into it, and for my first couple years of college I didn’t even have clubs with me. For the past 15 years I would go golf ever so often or head to the driving range, but I was by no means an avid golfer. Then came the bachelor party.

BPGolf_label.jpg.b2f46b9271911f989d60849a35f2c47c.jpg

(Jan 2024 Bachelor party golf event, I’m labeled with the red arrow…the short guy, you can’t miss me)

In January of this year, I got to celebrate the marriage of one of my closest friends. One of the team-based events during the three-day bachelor party was an 18-hole scramble with each hole having special rules and potential bonus points. Prior to this round, I hadn’t played a full round of golf since 2020. I had such a blast that three weeks later I was getting fit for new clubs to replace the starter set I had been playing since high school. I've played 20 rounds since then and will likely finish the year with about 30 rounds on the books.

Testing Focus

To start, I'll be doing my best to let all of you how the ball rolls with the Allen. this wouldn't be a putter test if that wasn't the first question, right? Second, and I'll try to address the elephant in the room... how does the Allen compare to the L.A.B Golf putters?

My review will include information about my experience with both my L.A.B. Golf DF3 and the PXG Allen.

(My custom DF3)

I'm looking forward to getting this test going and answering any questions that come up from my fellow spies. If you have anything specific you want answered, please don't hesitate to tag me in the thread or DM me.

Congratulations testers! Always interesting to see putter reviews, particularly someone else hopping on the zero torque wagon.  Roll 'em straight.

Putting is the weakest part of my game. Looking forward to seeing if this helps! I have tried everything.

Congratulations testers! As a new huge fan of PXG, new found interest in putters of all kinds, and having found a lot of improvement in my putting ability lately I’m definitely going to keep a watch on this test. Good luck testers!

I have a cobra rad speed driver, cobra fly z 3 and 5 wood, taylormade m1 irons (5-PW), Top Flite Gamer wedges (52,56,60), and odyssey white ice putter. When I’m playing to keep score I typically play the Maxfli Tour X. When just getting a round in with friends or scrambling I play whatever I might find on the course or might find at the bottom of my bag.

Congrats to the testers! I stopped in the local PXG store on my lunch break yesterday and hit a few with the Allan. Similar feel to my MEZZ.1! Can’t wait to hear how it plays in the wild

Congrats to those chosen, can’t wait to read the reviews!
