Beloved Dallas honky-tonk band Eleven Hundred Springs calling it quits

The country mainstay will play its final two shows this week at the granada theater..

By Kelly Dearmore

7:58 PM on Nov 23, 2021 CST

For Matt Hillyer and Steve Berg, it had been yet another amp-blasting Deep Ellum night in 1997. Their rock band Strap had just finished up a set at the Curtain Club on Main Street, and they had been invited to sit in during a friend’s country band’s set over at Adair’s Saloon a few blocks away on Commerce Street afterward. But first, Berg had to make a pit stop.

While in the Curtain Club bathroom, he overheard a couple of men discussing what they had just witnessed. Through some colorful — and probably liquor-fueled — language, Berg gathered that the guys weren’t exactly impressed with Strap’s onstage product. Berg had been considering leaving that band for some time at that point, so his eavesdropping added some urgency to his plans. Feeling a bit dejected as he, Hillyer and fiddle player Jason Garner joined in on the twangy happenings at Adair’s, he found himself in the middle of an epiphany on that tiny but storied stage.

“I was thinking, ‘This is a whole lot cooler than what we were doing an hour ago,’” Berg says about the second musical half of that fateful Deep Ellum night. “‘We ought to be doing more of this.’”

And more of that they did. In short order, Strap was done, and a new band took shape. Since officially forming the group in 1998, Berg (bass) and Hillyer (guitar and lead vocals) have led Eleven Hundred Springs, perhaps the most beloved honky-tonk band in North Texas of the last 20-plus years.

But in June, the band announced that its run as Dallas’ dancehall heroes would end in November. Eleven Hundred Springs will be no more after its final two sold-out shows this week at the Granada Theater.

Strong legacy

Without question, Eleven Hundred Springs has made its pedal steel-filled, fiddle-intensive mark as a notable contributor to an ever-expanding Texas country scene that was still in its infancy when the group began. Over the course of 11 full-length albums, millions of digital streams, a handful of Texas country radio hits, television appearances and performances in any Texas venue worth playing, Berg, Hillyer and crew haven’t been some sort of under-the-radar secret. From performing at European music festivals to kicking out the footlights of iconic spots such as Gruene Hall, Luckenbach and, of course, Billy Bob’s Texas, Eleven Hundred Springs has been a country music mainstay well beyond the North Texas region.

Eleven Hundred Springs has been a mainstay on the Dallas country music scene for more than...

Just as leaving their old rock band to focus on country music was the result of a series of events and feelings Berg and Hillyer endured, the decision to put an end to the group for good wasn’t made abruptly. The band — currently consisting of Berg, Hillyer, Jordan Hendrix, Christian Dorn, Ray Austin and Chad Rueffer — gets along fine. The simmering tensions that can so often lead to a group’s implosion aren’t anywhere to be found in this case.

This year wasn’t the first time Berg and Hillyer got together to choose between moving forward together or seeing what lay ahead on separate paths. The pandemic brought a lot of extra time to assess, reassess and reassess again.

A few weeks before the pandemic shut everything down in early 2020, the group released its final (and excellent) album, Here ‘Tis . As rough as the COVID-19 shutdown was for the group’s plans, it was made worse in that the record the band spent all of 2019 working on wouldn’t get a proper chance to be introduced to its fans on a tour.

The waltz-worthy single from the album, “This Morning It Was Too Late,” did gain some traction on Texas country radio and digital streaming services, finding its way to near the top of the regional chart just after its release. But still, such an anti-climactic fate for a project Berg had helped oversee so carefully enabled him to clarify his way forward.

With Berg feeling a pull to stay home more and on the road less, there was some thought given to continuing the band with a different bass player, but that notion never sat well with Hillyer.

“It would just look weird, and I wouldn’t feel good about doing Eleven Hundred Springs without Steve,” Hillyer says. “We started this thing together, and for me and him, it goes back to before this band when we played in Strap and the Lone Star Trio. There have been so many great folks come in and out of the band over the years, but I just wouldn’t be cool with putting someone else in on bass going forward.”

Sifting through emotions

In the end, it was a simple conclusion. It’s just time. It’s time to do something else, time for Berg and Hillyer to finally venture down those separate paths. With the two final shows nearing, they’re each sifting through different emotions. Because of how long Eleven Hundred Springs has lasted, it’s not so much that the friends are turning from one chapter to another but more like shutting one long book to start two entirely different ones.

Matt Hillyer, the lead vocalist of Dallas-based country band Eleven Hundred Springs, plans...

Hillyer is working on a new solo record for locally owned State Fair Records, which released Here ‘Tis . His new songs, along with the material from his 2014 solo debut record, If These Old Bones Could Talk , will give his post-Eleven Hundred Springs performances a bit more of a singer-songwriter vibe, though he’s likely to never leave the honky-tonk too far in the rearview. For his part, Berg will still play bass on occasion for other State Fair artists, including the latest great Dallas country hope and fellow State Fair Records artist, Joshua Ray Walker. He’ll also sell vintage guitars and related gear, as he’s done for many years now.

The guys are also feeling slightly differently about what the future holds as the final notes of Eleven Hundred Springs creep ever closer. Berg admits feeling a bit of relief. Knowing that Hillyer is set up to succeed as a solo artist with a fanbase, record label and hard-earned years of beer-stained wisdom aiding his friend means no one is being left high and dry.

Hillyer’s not feeling hopeful relief as much as he’s been sensing a touch of internal tension about what’s next.

“Right now, what I’m feeling leading up to these last shows is a small degree of anxiety about just making it good,” Hillyer says. “To make sure the set lists are good, that we’re playing enough of the really old songs that we’ve never played with this lineup ever. That part I’m a little anxious about but also excited because both those nights are going to be an outpouring of love and celebration. Maybe It’s more excitement than anything because there’s a lot of work to be done.”

Simply put, without both Berg and Hillyer, there isn’t an Eleven Hundred Springs. For all of their artistic output and accolades over the past quarter century, tangible totals aren’t how they measure the success of their band in its closing days.

“We started the band together, and we’re going to finish together,” Hillyer says. “Let’s feel good about what we’ve done and about the good things that have happened. To me, the relationships and the friendships are what it all boils down to. The music is great, and I love making it and creating and all of that stuff. But the relationships are the biggest takeaways from all of this.”

Album Review – Eleven Hundred Springs – “Here ‘Tis”

Trigger Reviews Chad Rueffer , Chris Claridy , Cody Jinks , Eleven Hundred Springs , Here 'Tis , Matt Hillyer , Old 97's , Reverend Horton Heat , Steven Berg --> 14 Comments

1100 springs tour dates

About the same time in the late 90’s when some of the biggest names in Texas country from Austin and elsewhere were really starting to sizzle, and the Red Dirt acts from Oklahoma were rearing out of Stillwater and starting to make some national noise, a little band called Eleven Hundred Springs was formed in Dallas, TX by two former bandmates of a rockabilly band: singer, guitarist, and primary songwriter Matt Hillyer, and bass player Steven Berg.

At the time, Dallas was not exactly seen as a haven for the burgeoning Texoma sound. It was the home of cover bands and The Dallas Cowboys—a halfway stop between Austin and Stillwater that was sliced a little too metropolitan for honky tonkers or country rockers. Sure, you had the Old 97’s, but they didn’t exactly fit into that scene, and The Reverend Horton Heat was a little too retro for the Texas/Red Dirt crowd. Better to be from Lubbock if you were looking for a little Texas/Red Dirt cred compared to Dallas.

But undaunted, Eleven Hundred Springs released a debut record, and launched a now legendary residency at the Dallas club called Adair’s where they recorded their second record live, and started garnering a local following from their throwback style and authentic country songs that carried a little spunk from the songwriting of Matt Hillyer. Soon everyone in the Texas honky tonk scene knew who they were, including the the fans of all the Texas and Red Dirt bands that would tour through Dallas and have Eleven Hundred Springs open or headline for them.

Over the years, Eleven Hundred Springs and Matt Hillyer would stretch their footprint beyond Dallas and Texas, but they found their calling as Dallas’s country music house band, becoming synonymous with the city, and the only right answer when someone asked who one of the coolest country bands in the DFW area were. Perhaps they were always too much of homebodys to sweat it out on the road in a manner that would make them as well known as those Texas and Red Dirt headliners. But focusing instead on cementing a legacy in Dallas has made them legendary in their own way.

1100 springs tour dates

That’s one of the great things about true country music. It’s insulated from the wild mood swings of trends or tastes, and there will always be a honky tonk full of two-steppers ready to soak it in no matter the occasion. Like wine and cheese, country music only gets better with age. The stories become more real, the wisdom interwoven into their verses more substantial. That’s certainly what you feel in this new album’s opening track, “This Morning It Was Too Late.” How many times has something broke, or an ailment gotten out-of-hand, or a relationship ended because you assured yourself you would take care of the next day and never did? It takes a seasoned veteran of not just the local honky tonk circuit, but of life to sow these kinds of astute observations into song.

Same goes for the super smooth “Fair Weather Friend,” or the witty “Let Me Be Your Man.” You always regarded Eleven Hundred Springs as country, but they really lather it on in Here ‘Tis, making it hard to not re-rack this record numerous times and savor it. The album does have a bit of an underlying theme to it. “All Jokes Aside” sung and co-written by guitarist Chad Rueffer can be interpreted as being about the camaraderie this band has sown over time as brothers in music, while “Looking Back” very directly reflects upon the 22 years as a band, it’s ups and downs, and lack of regrets.

And despite the old school country style they pull off so well, Here ‘Tis addresses some relevant themes. “Let’s Move Out To The Country” is definitely something Dallas residents can relate to as the skyscrapers and superstructures skewer the landscape, while the same can go for residents of many cities all across the U.S. that seem to have their priorities skewed. “Nobody Cares” is the perfect comeback to the incredibly hypocritical assertion by many online commenters (including here at Saving Country Music) that profess not caring about a subject, but take the time to let their opinion be known anyway—one of many foolish notions of social media Matt Hillyer challenges in the song.

Beyond Hillyer and bassist Steven Berg, the lineup of Eleven Hundred Springs has changed a few times over the years. Chris Claridy who now picks guitar with Cody Jinks once played in the band, as did drummer Arjuna Contreras of The Reverend Horton Heat. But what Matt Hillyer and Steven Berg initially built has turned into an institution of Dallas country music.

During an era when many other musicians deemed themselves too good for the scene in Dallas, moving to Austin or somewhere else, Eleven Hundred Springs made the Dallas country scene something worth sticking around for, helped support the local dives, and made Dallas a country music city worth driving to instead of through . They never compromised, and if Here ‘Tis is any indication, they also haven’t lost their skills to date.

Just gave it a listen … right up my alley. Thanks for the head’s up!

Great review of some even greater guys. Always glad when they put out new music.

Love these guys, saw them as SXSW back almost 20 years ago and have two of there album’s, this is one of there best and I’m only on the second song.

Thanks once again Trigger for the heads up!

Hard to pick a highlight track or two. It’s a good album. From first to last track. But with all the new albums & songs right now (Aleyce Simmonds, Luke O’Shea…) i don’t think i play the album on repeat.

Professionals.

' data-tf-not-load src=

Thanks for reviewing this album. I became aware of them in about 2014 when I happened to tune into a country music show on an NPR station on California’s Central Coast, which was playing “I Still Have a Little Falling Left toGo” from Matt Hillyer’s solo album. I’ve enjoyed all their albums, and from there I got more interested in good country music from this decade and eventually found this site. But I’m surprised to have found little recognition or discussion of Eleven Hundred Springs in my four years reading this site. Not Trigger’s fault, as there are so many bands to cover, but still interesting to me, because I really think they have the best combination of melody, instrumentation, vocals and lyrics out of all the bands I’ve come across, with Turnpike Troubadours and Mike and the Moonpies right there with them. Croy and the Boys’s recent album also meets this standard.

Which other bands do you all think come closest to Eleven Hundred Springs’s approach?

' data-tf-not-load src=

Western Centuries maybe?

What gives Eleven Hundred a huge leg up in authenticity of approach is their prominence in the North Texas music scene for years.

' data-tf-not-load src=

I’ve definitely mentioned Matt Hillyer and Eleven Hundred Springs a few times over the years, but I was frustrated as you that I hadn’t found the right opportunity to write a good feature for them. Nothing against their last few albums or Hillyer’s solo stuff, but I just didn’t feel like it was a good introduction point for the band like I feel this record is. As they took time to reflect, it allowed me to do the same and give people a broad perspective about what makes them cool. Sometimes it takes me a while to get around to a band, but I usually get there eventually.

' data-tf-not-load src=

Perhaps when time warrants, a rear view album review of one of their earlier ones is in order?

Yeah, a couple of their early records would work for vintage album reviews.

' data-tf-not-load src=

I dig these guys. They have that twang to their sound i’m nuts about. I sure hope they’ll drop by sweden sometime, so i can see them live.

' data-tf-not-load src=

No point here but a good memory. I lived in Dallas from 2002-2006. I hated country when I got there but listened to almost nothing but when I went back to California. Of all the time I spent in Dallas (hated it), the best was an April day that ended at Shinerfest on the south side of downtown. The show featured 1100 Springs, Aaron Tippon, Chris Cagle and Dwight Yoakam, just before he released Blame The Vain. That was the first time I heard of 1100 Springs and they were great. Tippon and Cagle were awful, the former in particular was downright embarrassing. Dwight, though, was amazing, playing for about three hours and just rolling through a bunch of awesome covers and classic hits. It was the best show I have ever been to. After that I had to look up 1100 Hundred Springs and really enjoyed a lot of their early stuff. “See You In The Next Life” is still one of my favorite songs and one I point people to when demonstrating that country can stretch boundaries and still be very traditional. Jason Boland covered “Hank” too. It’s a good track.

' data-tf-not-load src=

Don’t want to label this as easy listening, but it is very easy to listen to (for a country boy). Reminds me of George Strait albums in how it’s no-frills, straight down the middle, unapologetic country music.

' data-tf-not-load src=

I thought it worthy to mention that Jordan Hendrix has played fiddle with 11 Hondo for a long, long time. He and the rest of the band are fantastic musicians, great entertainers, and just real nice people.

Quail Hollow is a challenging and long course. It's a par 71 that plays at 7,538 yards, and is difficult enough to have hosted a PGA Championship (2017) and Presidents Cup (2022) in the last 7 years. McIlroy played poorly here last year and finished T-47, but he holds the 72-hole scoring record (267, 2015) and 18-hole record (61, 2015).

Wells Fargo Championship – Expert picks

Odds provided by BetMGM Sportsbook ; access USA TODAY Sports Scores and Sports Betting Odds hub for a full list. Lines last updated Monday at 11:15 a.m. ET.

Ludvig Aberg (+1100)

Is this price too short for Aberg? Probably. Should it matter? Not really. Quail Hollow rewards long, straight drivers and players who excel with long irons. Aberg checks all of those boxes. He's one of the best pure ball-strikers in the world and at Augusta National, he proved he putts like one of the game's premier players, too.

Wyndham Clark (+1800)

Scheffler was the only player to beat Clark at the Arnold Palmer Invitational and Players Championship. At the RBC Heritage, another Signature Event, it was only Scheffler and Sahith Theegala who finished ahead of Clark. Yet, Clark is only tied for the 4th-best odds this week at a course where he just won last year? Sign me up at +1800.

Max Homa (+2500)

Homa has only missed 1 cut, but he does have 3 finishes of 55th or worse in 2024. Now for the good: He already has 5 top-16 finishes this season, won this event in 2019 and finished 8th last year. With a winning pedigree at Quail Hollow and odds of +2500, Homa feels like a good value as a past champion this week.

Wells Fargo Championship picks – Contenders

Akshay bhatia (+5000).

Bhatia played this event in each of the last 2 years, missing the cut in 2022 and finishing 43rd last year. He's in the midst of an excellent season with a win already at the Valero Texas Open, as well as a T-35 at the Masters and T-18 at the RBC Heritage. He's long and straight off the tee, ranking 34th in SG: off the tee, so he should be able to contend here and continue his stellar play as of late.

Harris English (+5000)

Don't look now, but English is quietly having an excellent season. He has 6 top-21 finishes, including a solo 7th at the Genesis Invitational, and finished T-22 and T-28 in his last 2 starts (Masters, RBC Heritage). At Quail Hollow, he finished 3rd last year and has never missed the cut in 5 trips here.

Wells Fargo Championship picks – Long shots

Nick taylor (+12500).

Taylor has already won a signature event this year at the WM Phoenix Open and has 4 other top-26 finishes. He seems to play better when the fields are stronger, finishing no worse than T-39 at any of the 4 signature events earlier in the year (excluding RBC Heritage). He finished 26th here in 2021, as well.

Cam Davis (+10000)

Davis can be inconsistent at times, partly because he can get a bit wild with his driver. But when he's on, his length off the tee is an advantage. He finished 26th here in 2021 and 59th last year so he does have some course history. With the way he's been playing as of late (T-21, T-12, T-49 in last 3 starts), he could find himself in contention this weekend – especially with no cut to worry about.

In Transit: Notes from the Underground

Jun 06 2018.

Spend some time in one of Moscow’s finest museums.

Subterranean commuting might not be anyone’s idea of a good time, but even in a city packing the war-games treasures and priceless bejeweled eggs of the Kremlin Armoury and the colossal Soviet pavilions of the VDNKh , the Metro holds up as one of Moscow’s finest museums. Just avoid rush hour.

The Metro is stunning and provides an unrivaled insight into the city’s psyche, past and present, but it also happens to be the best way to get around. Moscow has Uber, and the Russian version called Yandex Taxi , but also some nasty traffic. Metro trains come around every 90 seconds or so, at a more than 99 percent on-time rate. It’s also reasonably priced, with a single ride at 55 cents (and cheaper in bulk). From history to tickets to rules — official and not — here’s what you need to know to get started.

A Brief Introduction Buying Tickets Know Before You Go (Down) Rules An Easy Tour

A Brief Introduction

Moscow’s Metro was a long time coming. Plans for rapid transit to relieve the city’s beleaguered tram system date back to the Imperial era, but a couple of wars and a revolution held up its development. Stalin revived it as part of his grand plan to modernize the Soviet Union in the 1920s and 30s. The first lines and tunnels were constructed with help from engineers from the London Underground, although Stalin’s secret police decided that they had learned too much about Moscow’s layout and had them arrested on espionage charges and deported.

The beauty of its stations (if not its trains) is well-documented, and certainly no accident. In its illustrious first phases and particularly after the Second World War, the greatest architects of Soviet era were recruited to create gleaming temples celebrating the Revolution, the USSR, and the war triumph. No two stations are exactly alike, and each of the classic showpieces has a theme. There are world-famous shrines to Futurist architecture, a celebration of electricity, tributes to individuals and regions of the former Soviet Union. Each marble slab, mosaic tile, or light fixture was placed with intent, all in service to a station’s aesthetic; each element, f rom the smallest brass ear of corn to a large blood-spattered sword on a World War II mural, is an essential part of the whole.

1100 springs tour dates

The Metro is a monument to the Soviet propaganda project it was intended to be when it opened in 1935 with the slogan “Building a Palace for the People”. It brought the grand interiors of Imperial Russia to ordinary Muscovites, celebrated the Soviet Union’s past achievements while promising its citizens a bright Soviet future, and of course, it was a show-piece for the world to witness the might and sophistication of life in the Soviet Union.

It may be a museum, but it’s no relic. U p to nine million people use it daily, more than the London Underground and New York Subway combined. (Along with, at one time, about 20 stray dogs that learned to commute on the Metro.)

In its 80+ year history, the Metro has expanded in phases and fits and starts, in step with the fortunes of Moscow and Russia. Now, partly in preparation for the World Cup 2018, it’s also modernizing. New trains allow passengers to walk the entire length of the train without having to change carriages. The system is becoming more visitor-friendly. (There are helpful stickers on the floor marking out the best selfie spots .) But there’s a price to modernity: it’s phasing out one of its beloved institutions, the escalator attendants. Often they are middle-aged or elderly women—“ escalator grandmas ” in news accounts—who have held the post for decades, sitting in their tiny kiosks, scolding commuters for bad escalator etiquette or even bad posture, or telling jokes . They are slated to be replaced, when at all, by members of the escalator maintenance staff.

For all its achievements, the Metro lags behind Moscow’s above-ground growth, as Russia’s capital sprawls ever outwards, generating some of the world’s worst traffic jams . But since 2011, the Metro has been in the middle of an ambitious and long-overdue enlargement; 60 new stations are opening by 2020. If all goes to plan, the 2011-2020 period will have brought 125 miles of new tracks and over 100 new stations — a 40 percent increase — the fastest and largest expansion phase in any period in the Metro’s history.

Buying Tickets

  • Ticket machines have a button to switch to English.
  • You can buy specific numbers of rides: 1, 2, 5, 11, 20, or 60. Hold up fingers to show how many rides you want to buy.
  • There is also a 90-minute ticket , which gets you 1 trip on the metro plus an unlimited number of transfers on other transport (bus, tram, etc) within 90 minutes.
  • Or, you can buy day tickets with unlimited rides: one day (218₽/ US$4), three days (415₽/US$7) or seven days (830₽/US$15). Check the rates here to stay up-to-date.
  • If you’re going to be using the Metro regularly over a few days, it’s worth getting a Troika card , a contactless, refillable card you can use on all public transport. Using the Metro is cheaper with one of these: a single ride is 36₽, not 55₽. Buy them and refill them in the Metro stations, and they’re valid for 5 years, so you can keep it for next time. Or, if you have a lot of cash left on it when you leave, you can get it refunded at the Metro Service Centers at Ulitsa 1905 Goda, 25 or at Staraya Basmannaya 20, Building 1.
  • You can also buy silicone bracelets and keychains with built-in transport chips that you can use as a Troika card. (A Moscow Metro Fitbit!) So far, you can only get these at the Pushkinskaya metro station Live Helpdesk and souvenir shops in the Mayakovskaya and Trubnaya metro stations. The fare is the same as for the Troika card.
  • You can also use Apple Pay and Samsung Pay.

Rules, spoken and unspoken

No smoking, no drinking, no filming, no littering. Photography is allowed, although it used to be banned.

Stand to the right on the escalator. Break this rule and you risk the wrath of the legendary escalator attendants. (No shenanigans on the escalators in general.)

Get out of the way. Find an empty corner to hide in when you get off a train and need to stare at your phone. Watch out getting out of the train in general; when your train doors open, people tend to appear from nowhere or from behind ornate marble columns, walking full-speed.

Always offer your seat to elderly ladies (what are you, a monster?).

An Easy Tour

This is no Metro Marathon ( 199 stations in 20 hours ). It’s an easy tour, taking in most—though not all—of the notable stations, the bulk of it going clockwise along the Circle line, with a couple of short detours. These stations are within minutes of one another, and the whole tour should take about 1-2 hours.

Start at Mayakovskaya Metro station , at the corner of Tverskaya and Garden Ring,  Triumfalnaya Square, Moskva, Russia, 125047.

1. Mayakovskaya.  Named for Russian Futurist Movement poet Vladimir Mayakovsky and an attempt to bring to life the future he imagined in his poems. (The Futurist Movement, natch, was all about a rejecting the past and celebrating all things speed, industry, modern machines, youth, modernity.) The result: an Art Deco masterpiece that won the National Grand Prix for architecture at the New York World’s Fair in 1939. It’s all smooth, rounded shine and light, and gentle arches supported by columns of dark pink marble and stainless aircraft steel. Each of its 34 ceiling niches has a mosaic. During World War II, the station was used as an air-raid shelter and, at one point, a bunker for Stalin. He gave a subdued but rousing speech here in Nov. 6, 1941 as the Nazis bombed the city above.

1100 springs tour dates

Take the 3/Green line one station to:

2. Belorusskaya. Opened in 1952, named after the connected Belarussky Rail Terminal, which runs trains between Moscow and Belarus. This is a light marble affair with a white, cake-like ceiling, lined with Belorussian patterns and 12 Florentine ceiling mosaics depicting life in Belarussia when it was built.

1100 springs tour dates

Transfer onto the 1/Brown line. Then, one stop (clockwise) t o:

3. Novoslobodskaya.  This station was designed around the stained-glass panels, which were made in Latvia, because Alexey Dushkin, the Soviet starchitect who dreamed it up (and also designed Mayakovskaya station) couldn’t find the glass and craft locally. The stained glass is the same used for Riga’s Cathedral, and the panels feature plants, flowers, members of the Soviet intelligentsia (musician, artist, architect) and geometric shapes.

1100 springs tour dates

Go two stops east on the 1/Circle line to:

4. Komsomolskaya. Named after the Komsomol, or the Young Communist League, this might just be peak Stalin Metro style. Underneath the hub for three regional railways, it was intended to be a grand gateway to Moscow and is today its busiest station. It has chandeliers; a yellow ceiling with Baroque embellishments; and in the main hall, a colossal red star overlaid on golden, shimmering tiles. Designer Alexey Shchusev designed it as an homage to the speech Stalin gave at Red Square on Nov. 7, 1941, in which he invoked Russia’s illustrious military leaders as a pep talk to Soviet soldiers through the first catastrophic year of the war.   The station’s eight large mosaics are of the leaders referenced in the speech, such as Alexander Nevsky, a 13th-century prince and military commander who bested German and Swedish invading armies.

1100 springs tour dates

One more stop clockwise to Kurskaya station,  and change onto the 3/Blue  line, and go one stop to:

5. Baumanskaya.   Opened in 1944. Named for the Bolshevik Revolutionary Nikolai Bauman , whose monument and namesake district are aboveground here. Though he seemed like a nasty piece of work (he apparently once publicly mocked a woman he had impregnated, who later hung herself), he became a Revolutionary martyr when he was killed in 1905 in a skirmish with a monarchist, who hit him on the head with part of a steel pipe. The station is in Art Deco style with atmospherically dim lighting, and a series of bronze sculptures of soldiers and homefront heroes during the War. At one end, there is a large mosaic portrait of Lenin.

1100 springs tour dates

Stay on that train direction one more east to:

6. Elektrozavodskaya. As you may have guessed from the name, this station is the Metro’s tribute to all thing electrical, built in 1944 and named after a nearby lightbulb factory. It has marble bas-relief sculptures of important figures in electrical engineering, and others illustrating the Soviet Union’s war-time struggles at home. The ceiling’s recurring rows of circular lamps give the station’s main tunnel a comforting glow, and a pleasing visual effect.

1100 springs tour dates

Double back two stops to Kurskaya station , and change back to the 1/Circle line. Sit tight for six stations to:

7. Kiyevskaya. This was the last station on the Circle line to be built, in 1954, completed under Nikita Khrushchev’ s guidance, as a tribute to his homeland, Ukraine. Its three large station halls feature images celebrating Ukraine’s contributions to the Soviet Union and Russo-Ukrainian unity, depicting musicians, textile-working, soldiers, farmers. (One hall has frescoes, one mosaics, and the third murals.) Shortly after it was completed, Khrushchev condemned the architectural excesses and unnecessary luxury of the Stalin era, which ushered in an epoch of more austere Metro stations. According to the legend at least, he timed the policy in part to ensure no Metro station built after could outshine Kiyevskaya.

1100 springs tour dates

Change to the 3/Blue line and go one stop west.

8. Park Pobedy. This is the deepest station on the Metro, with one of the world’s longest escalators, at 413 feet. If you stand still, the escalator ride to the surface takes about three minutes .) Opened in 2003 at Victory Park, the station celebrates two of Russia’s great military victories. Each end has a mural by Georgian artist Zurab Tsereteli, who also designed the “ Good Defeats Evil ” statue at the UN headquarters in New York. One mural depicts the Russian generals’ victory over the French in 1812 and the other, the German surrender of 1945. The latter is particularly striking; equal parts dramatic, triumphant, and gruesome. To the side, Red Army soldiers trample Nazi flags, and if you look closely there’s some blood spatter among the detail. Still, the biggest impressions here are the marble shine of the chessboard floor pattern and the pleasingly geometric effect if you view from one end to the other.

1100 springs tour dates

Keep going one more stop west to:

9. Slavyansky Bulvar.  One of the Metro’s youngest stations, it opened in 2008. With far higher ceilings than many other stations—which tend to have covered central tunnels on the platforms—it has an “open-air” feel (or as close to it as you can get, one hundred feet under). It’s an homage to French architect Hector Guimard, he of the Art Nouveau entrances for the Paris M é tro, and that’s precisely what this looks like: A Moscow homage to the Paris M é tro, with an additional forest theme. A Cyrillic twist on Guimard’s Metro-style lettering over the benches, furnished with t rees and branch motifs, including creeping vines as towering lamp-posts.

1100 springs tour dates

Stay on the 3/Blue line and double back four stations to:

10. Arbatskaya. Its first iteration, Arbatskaya-Smolenskaya station, was damaged by German bombs in 1941. It was rebuilt in 1953, and designed to double as a bomb shelter in the event of nuclear war, although unusually for stations built in the post-war phase, this one doesn’t have a war theme. It may also be one of the system’s most elegant: Baroque, but toned down a little, with red marble floors and white ceilings with gilded bronze c handeliers.

1100 springs tour dates

Jump back on the 3/Blue line  in the same direction and take it one more stop:

11. Ploshchad Revolyutsii (Revolution Square). Opened in 1938, and serving Red Square and the Kremlin . Its renowned central hall has marble columns flanked by 76 bronze statues of Soviet heroes: soldiers, students, farmers, athletes, writers, parents. Some of these statues’ appendages have a yellow sheen from decades of Moscow’s commuters rubbing them for good luck. Among the most popular for a superstitious walk-by rub: the snout of a frontier guard’s dog, a soldier’s gun (where the touch of millions of human hands have tapered the gun barrel into a fine, pointy blade), a baby’s foot, and a woman’s knee. (A brass rooster also sports the telltale gold sheen, though I am told that rubbing the rooster is thought to bring bad luck. )

Now take the escalator up, and get some fresh air.
