Group of travellers and Intrepid leader look over Ait Benhaddou

When people throw around the word ‘remarkable’, they’re probably referring to places like Morocco.

In a place where riding a camel over dunes at sunset is not unusual, where tagines spiked with saffron perfume the air and Amazigh people herd goats on the slopes of the High Atlas Mountains, the word remarkable just doesn't cut it. Whether you're wandering the wind-battered port town of Essaouira, exploring the famous Kasbah in Aït Benhaddou or sleeping beneath the Saharan stars , a healthy dose of Maghreb hospitality will make a Morocco tour truly unforgettable.

Best time to visit morocco.

The climate in Morocco varies wildly according to the season and area of travel. In the lowlands, the cooler months from October to April are popular among visitors. This time of year is pleasantly warm to hot (around 86°F) during the day and cool to cold (around 59°F) at night. Winter in the higher regions often brings snow and can therefore get seriously cold, particularly at night. Tourists flock to the coastline from June to September for fun in the sun, with warm mostly rain-free days. Further inland it can get hot and rain is rare, which makes the best times to travel March to June and September to December. As a Muslim country, Morocco observes Ramadan. If you are planning to go on holiday in Morocco during Ramadan, it is important to consider that many restaurants and shops will either be closed or operating at reduced hours during this time.

Culture and customs

Morocco's culture has developed over centuries of influence from far and wide. Contemporary Morocco is a fascinating mix of Berber, Mediterranean, Andalucian and African traditions, which are present in the cuisine, clothing, music, language, customs and lifestyle. As an Islamic country, most Moroccans are Muslim; however, there are small populations of people who practice Judaism and Christianity. Classic examples of Islamic architecture can be observed all throughout the country and tenets of the Islamic religion are carried out in the customs and lives of the people. The 'Call to Prayer' can be heard five times a day, women are expected to dress modestly and alcohol isn't drunk by most of the population.

Most of Moroccan society can be considered traditional, with respect for elders, connection to family, and giving alms to the poor hallmarks of everyday life for many Moroccans. Hospitality is another important element of society, with warmly welcoming people into your home a time-honored tradition and social responsibility that dates back centuries.

Eating and drinking

Intrepid believes that one of the best ways to experience a country is by eating! Whether you're sampling street food, savoring a cheap eat, or indulging in a banquet, there are endless options to choose from wherever you are in the world.

Believe the hype - Moroccan food is legendary.

Things to try in Morocco

These slow-cooked stews are synonymous with Moroccan cooking. Chicken, olive, and citrus are well-known favorites, but there are endless variations using different meats, vegetables, and seasonings.

2. Couscous

Forget instant cous cous and try the real deal in Morocco. Often served with vegetables and meat, regional varieties sometimes also include everything from sweet raisins to spicy harissa or smoky almonds.

3. Fresh fruit

Morocco has an amazing array of fruit available in the markets, shops, and juice bars. Choose from bananas, mangoes, oranges, avocados, or peaches - eat fresh or get them whipped up in a juice.

4. Mint tea

While traveling through Morocco you'll probably drink more sweet mint tea than ever before. Offered as a gesture of hospitality when visiting someone's home or shop, it's considered impolite to refuse, so accept graciously.

Geography and environment

Located in North Africa, Morocco has the best of many worlds within its boundaries. From the sun-drenched beaches of the coast to the sands of the mighty Sahara and the snowy peaks of the High Atlas and Rif Mountains, Morocco has great variety in its landscapes and terrain. This combination of desert, woodlands, forest, mountain steppe, and grasslands ensures a wide diversity of flora and fauna lives within the country.

History and government

Early history.

The land now known as Morocco has been inhabited for centuries, with Moroccan civilization being known for its richness in history and culture. Centuries of foreign trade, invasion, and dynastic rule have given Morocco many different cultural influences that are evident in today's society. From the Phoenicians who entered Morocco via the Mediterranean in the 6th century BC, to the Roman influence of 40 AD and the formation of Islamic Morocco in the years after, Morocco has evolved with the rise and fall of dynasties, formation and dissolution of empires and the birth of new governments, movements, and ways of living. Reaching its height under the Berber Dynasties of the 11th and 12th centuries (the Almoravids, Almohads, Marinids, and Wattasids), Morocco subsequently fell to Arab tribes in 1559. The current royal family are descendants of the Alaouite Dynasty who have largely ruled since the 1600s, despite enduring a few crises in the 18th and 19th centuries, mainly in relation to European influence in the area and surrounding countries.

Recent history

With the signing of the Treaty of Fez, Morocco was declared a protectorate of France in 1912 with Spain being allocated control of parts of Morocco, mainly in the north and south. European control was generally opposed by Moroccan citizens, with the people of Rif attempting to establish a separatist republic in 1921. Decades of opposition continued, with rioting and protests leading to increased political tension. In 1955, the road to Moroccan independence was paved by Mohammed V who negotiated reforms and the restoration of independence. By 1956, France had relinquished its protectorate of Morocco and in 1957, Mohammed V became king. In 1961, Hassan II assumed the title of King of Morocco and continued to rule until his death in 1999. His son, Mohammed VI, took over the mantle of king in 1999 and continues to rule today.

Top places to see in Morocco

1. marrakech.

Things just happen in Marrakech. One moment you're sitting down to a camel burger, the next you're chatting with a snake charmer. The labyrinthine markets are the perfect place to lose yourself but find a Moroccan memento or three.

The endless dunes of the Sahara will call to your inner explorer. Jump on a camel and start riding out over the sandy waves. At sunset, the desert glows rich and red and at night the stars turn the sky crystal.

The desert is calling! Add a  3 day Sahara Mini Adventure  to your Morocco trip itinerary.

3. Essaouira

The name 'Essaouira' means image, appropriate since its charm is undeniable. Within the stone ramparts, you'll find art galleries, wood workshops and whitewashed houses with bright blue shutters. Portuguese, British and Jewish influences all mingle in this artist's town.

Explore this windswept coastal city on our  11 day Premium Morocco Highlights with Essaouira trip,  or make it a quick journey on our  Five Days in Morocco tour.

Fes is the cultural heart of Morocco and home to some of its most iconic sights. Feel every sense come alive in the medina. Shops, dye pits and mosques all vie for space and you're as likely to see a donkey as a car.

5. High Atlas Mountains

The mountains are best explored at the ground level by foot or bicycle. Travel through Amazigh villages, up along crop terraces, down through lush valleys and past orchards, goats and Moroccan rural life. The seriously fit can tackle Mount Toubkal for incredible views.

Join a  7 day Mount Toubkal Trek  or a  Mount Toubkal Long Weekend Trek  for those short on time.

6. Todra Gorge

This is a rock climber's heaven or the ideal place for beginners to get a taste. It's a tight squeeze in some places but a sparkling river, the odd palmeraie, Berber villages and high cliff walls make it worth breathing in for.

7. Moulay Idriss

The small Medina of ancient Moulay Idriss was once forbidden to non-Muslims. Now it is a pleasure to explore as the faithful gather to pay homage to the founding father of Islam in Morocco at the 8th-century mausoleum.

8. Ait Benhaddou

Perfectly preserved, this is one of Morocco's most picturesque kasbahs. Centuries ago it was a stop for caravans as they carried salt across the Sahara. Today, it is inhabited only by a handful of families and the odd film crew.

Visit Ait Benhaddou on our  8 day Classic Morocco tour .

9. Casablanca

The very name conjures up images of war-time romance. But the real romance of Casablanca must be its French influences and the beautiful Hassan II mosque, the largest in Morocco.

10. Volubilis

Do some time travel and visit the ancient hilltop city of Volubilis, one of the Roman Empire's most remote bases. The ruins here are beautifully preserved and it's easy to believe you've stepped into the 2nd or 3rd century.

Rabat is Morocco's lively capital. Its history is long and colorful, having been host to Roman settlements, pirates, and more recently the Moroccan parliament. Stroll through the old quarter or enjoy views over the Atlantic Ocean from Kasbah des Oudaias.

12. Chefchaouen

You might recognize this city from the famous photos of its bright blue buildings. Set against a wide valley and tucked between two peaks in the Rif Mountains, much of Chefchaouen was recreated by Andalusian refugees escaping the Reconquista, so it might remind you of the hills of Spain.

Get a chance to wander around this striking blue city on our  18 day Morocco Encompassed tour .

13. Tangier

The coastal town of Tangier is the gateway between the Mediterranean and Africa. Enjoy fresh seafood by the port, watch the sunset over the Atlantic or visit the Caves of Hercules.

Explore the Gateway to Africa on our  9 day North Morocco Adventure.

Morocco has one of the oldest retail cultures in the world. From bargaining in age-old souqs to swiping your credit card at a modern gallery, it's all possible in Morocco. But to experience brilliant bargains, exciting finds, and a dose of history, you can't go past the souqs.

It's a good idea to check with your local customs officials to ensure that you are able to bring certain items back into your home country.   Australia   and New Zealand generally have strict quarantine laws.

Things to buy in Morocco

1. Silver jewelry

Jewelry fiends will love Morocco's affinity with silver jewelry. Chunky rings, elaborate necklaces, and patterned earrings can all be found for great prices, especially if you're willing to haggle.

Save room in your backpack for an iconic silver teapot and some delicate tea glasses. Morocco's silversmiths have this ancient art running through their veins, with centuries of craftsmanship being passed from generation to generation.

The quality (and price) of leather in Morocco is pretty phenomenal. Handcrafted handbags, wallets, belts, and purses can be found in almost every souq around the country.

Festivals and events

Ramadan and eid.

The ninth and holiest of months in the Islamic calendar, Ramadan is observed by most in Morocco and is thought to be a time of spiritual rejuvenation. For this month, Muslims fast from sunrise to sunset - refraining from eating and drinking during daylight hours. Eid marks the end of fasting with 3 days of feasting and celebration.

Gnaoua World Music Festival

Seaside Essaouira hosts this world-famous festival that celebrates the mysterious music of the Gnaouas, brought to Morocco centuries ago via the African slave trade. Jazz, rock, blues, and pop music add a contemporary flavor, although the drums of the Gnaouas are the true soul of the festival.

Casablanca Festival

Touted as a 'celebration of all things Moroccan', this annual festival includes local and international music performances, dance, art installations, theatre, workshops, and street parades. This fusion of history and modernity, innovation and tradition is a shining example of what it means to be a citizen of cosmopolitan Casablanca.

  • Belgium: No - Not required
  • Canada: No - Not required
  • Germany: No - Not required
  • Ireland: No - Not required

Visas can take several weeks to process, so familiarise yourself with any requirements as soon as you have booked your trip to allow for processing time.

Australians, New Zealanders, Canadians, Americans and British citizens do not require a visa to visit Morocco for stays up to 90 days. All other nationalities should check with the Moroccan Embassy or Consulate in their country for up-to-date visa information.

What are the toilets like in Morocco?

Morocco's toilets are a mixture of modern flushable toilets and squat toilets, so be prepared to encounter both. Carry your own supply of toilet paper and soap, as these aren't always provided.

Can I drink the water in Morocco?

Drinking tap water isn't recommended in Morocco. Your leader will advise where filtered water can be found, and some hotels provide it. For environmental reasons, we suggest carrying a reusable water bottle to cut down on plastic waste.

Is tipping customary in Morocco?

While tipping isn't mandatory in Morocco, rounding up the bill and leaving spare change at restaurants and cafes is generally standard practice. Taxi drivers and porters will also accept tips, 10 dirhams is usually sufficient in this case.

What should I wear in Morocco?

While Moroccan days are generally mild-to-hot or hot-and-humid, they can give way to cooler nights – outside of the summer months, anyway. Packing layers and sensible footwear to deal with Morocco's changeable climate, uneven paths and conservative culture is always a good idea.

F emale travelers aren't expected to dress as conservatively as local women, but it’s still a good idea to pack clothing options that will allow you to cover up.

What is the internet access like in Morocco?

Morocco's cities have internet access available in internet cafes and hotel lobbies. In some cases, free Wi-Fi can be accessed in public places. Less internet access is available in rural areas, so be prepared to 'disconnect' when traveling out of Morocco's big cities.

Can I use my cell phone in Morocco?

Cell phone coverage is generally very good in Morocco's cities and metropolitan areas, although coverage can be limited in remote or mountainous areas. Ensure you have global roaming activated with your carrier if you wish to use your phone while in Morocco.

Are credit cards accepted widely in Morocco?

Major credit cards are accepted by most large shops, hotels and restaurants, although smaller vendors and market stalls often only accept cash.

What is ATM access like in Morocco?

ATMs are easily found in large cities and airports, although are less common in rural and remote areas. When traveling out of the city, be prepared by having enough cash, as ATMs aren't always an option.

Where will I stay in Morocco?

Traveling with Intrepid is a little bit different. We endeavor to provide travelers with an authentic experience to remember, so we try to keep accommodation as unique and traditional as possible.

When traveling with us in Morocco you may find yourself staying in a:

Admire beautiful arches and tiled mosaics while staying in a traditional Moroccan riad. The riad is the Moroccan traditional house, normally with two or more stories around an Andalusian-style courtyard that contained a fountain. Riads were the stately city homes of the wealthiest citizens such as merchants and courtiers.

Is Morocco a safe destination for LGBTQIA+ travelers?

We recommend LGBTQIA+ travelers exercise discretion when traveling in Morocco as homosexuality is not widely accepted in the community. Homosexual acts (including kissing) are illegal in Morocco and can attract a fine or even a jail sentence for offenders. That said, some towns (such as Marrakech and Tangier) are considered more gay-friendly than others. As long as travelers use discretion and avoid public displays of affection, travel in Morocco should not be a problem.

For more detailed and up-to-date advice, we recommend visiting  Equaldex  or   ILGA  before you travel.

If you are traveling solo on an Intrepid group tour, you will share accommodation with a passenger of the same gender as per your passport information. If you don’t identify with the gender assigned on your passport, please let us know at the time of booking and we’ll arrange the rooming configuration accordingly. A single supplement is available on some tours for travelers who do not wish to share a room.

Do I need to purchase travel insurance before traveling?

Absolutely. All passengers traveling with Intrepid are required to purchase travel insurance before the start of their trip. Your travel insurance details will be recorded by your leader on the first day of the trip. Due to the varying nature, availability and cost of health care around the world, travel insurance is very much an essential and necessary part of every journey.

What people love about Morocco Tours

I had a fantastic experience, I booked 10 day Exotic Morocco with friends ( total of 4) & we all had a great experience. Our tour guide Abder was great went beyond to accommodate all of us, very knowledgeable, kind &funny. Our driver Kamal was excellent friendly, polite & makes sure that we get to our next destination safe. There if some hotel that were misrepresented & especially the camp site that we used at the desert, is not what we expected, it was misrepresented . Thank u
Bloody amazing. Best tour guide ever. Ali was amazing. Taking us from place to place. Ali even organised our laundry on our last day.
Our trip to Morocco was truly unforgettable, thanks to Cultural Morocco Tours and the meticulous planning by Abdellatif. From arrival to departure, everything was perfectly organized. Our private tour guide, Fares, was exceptional, showcasing every aspect of Morocco’s beauty and culture. Each day was filled with discovery and adventure, ending with relaxation at carefully selected hotels and riads. One of the highlights was the night we spent in the Sahara Desert. The camel ride to our glamorous tents, the delicious food, and the musical entertainment made it an experience of a lifetime. Don't miss the sunrise in the desert—it's breathtaking! We made so many great memories, and I would definitely recommend Cultural Morocco Tours to my family and friends.

Travel Talk

"The tour was OK. I do not think it was a 4 star stay as advertised but could be according to local standards. The tour felt rushed as we kept being taken from market to market without being given time to experience it and shop. When we were given time to shop, it was in specific shops chosen by the guide (tourist traps with higher prices than in the normal market). The last stop Ouarzazate was not worth it therefore may be better to take the 9 day option. Regarding the price - it was sold at a "50% discount". If it had been "full price", I would have been bitterly disappointed.

"Great tour to introduce you to Morocco. Lots of driving between cities. The overnight in the dessert camp was awful, sheets not changed from last visitors, facilities not useable, would rather just have a sunset camel ride and dinner or pay more to upgrade to a comfortable dessert camp. Jamal our guide was great. Morocco is truly a beautiful place with lots of culture and amazing sites. I feel it was great value for what we paid (except the dessert camp!).

"Amazing experience from beginning to end and would highly recommend Ali for your trip to Morocco! He knows so much about the history and culture of the country and people and you will learn and experience so much! All of the hotels that he booked were great and you can trust that you are in good hands. In June it will be hot so be prepared when going on tours during the day but it cools off at night. This tour was definitely the highlight of the trip and when we return to Morocco we will make sure to contact them again. Thank you so much Ali for your flexibility and kindness during the trip!

Morocco is Europe’s gateway to the African continent and as such oozes exotic charm and adventure whilst also being extremely accessible for those wanting to test the waters before heading further inland. With stunning cities, immeasurable history and culture, delicious food, a beautiful coastline and the threshold to the Sahara desert , the real question is why shouldn’t you visit? Spoiler alert: You should.

The medinas in Fes and Marrakech are a labyrinth of artisanal wares, foods, spices, clothes and magic carpets that you’ll just love getting lost in. Whereas the medina of Marrakech is the most famous and overwhelming, Fes (a UNESCO world site) is far less intimidating.

Essaouira isn’t on everyone’s list but should be: not only is it a beautiful coastal town with surfing for days, but it also holds medina charm with all the chill vibes you’d expect from a Surfer’s paradise. With rumours of regular visits from the likes of Jimi Hendrix and Cat Stevens, the locals are very proud to tell you that "Castles Made of Sand" is said to be inspired by the ruins of the Borj El-Berod watchtower.

Chefchaouen is as beautiful as everyone says and the photos show. It is well worth a visit to the Andalusian quarter (interestingly, the only part of the city that is blue) to feel like you’ve stepped into a fairytale land, and get some amazing shots.

For the adventurous, try desert treks into the Sahara , water sports and surfing in Essaouira, and trekking and mountaineering in the Atlas Mountains .

Is Morocco a safe country to visit?

Morocco is generally considered a safe country to visit for tourists. The Moroccan government places great importance on ensuring the safety and security of visitors. However, it's always wise to exercise common sense and take precautions to ensure a safe and enjoyable trip. Here are some important points to consider regarding safety in Morocco:

Low Crime Rate: Morocco has a relatively low crime rate, particularly when it comes to violent crimes against tourists. However, like any travel destination, it's important to stay vigilant and take precautions to protect yourself and your belongings.

Tourist Police: Morocco has dedicated tourist police who are present in popular tourist areas to assist visitors and maintain security. They can provide guidance, assistance, and emergency services if needed.

Petty Theft: As with many tourist destinations, petty theft and pickpocketing can occur, particularly in crowded tourist areas, markets, and public transportation. It's advisable to take common-sense precautions such as keeping an eye on your belongings, using a money belt or secure bag, and avoiding displaying expensive items openly.

Scams: Like in any popular tourist destination, there may be occasional scams targeting tourists. Be cautious of anyone offering unsolicited help or trying to sell you goods or services at inflated prices. Use reputable tour operators and official guides to avoid falling victim to scams.

Solo Travellers: Morocco is generally safe for solo travellers, both male and female. However, solo travellers should exercise the same precautions as they would in any foreign country, such as avoiding isolated areas at night and staying in well-lit and populated areas.

Political Stability: Morocco has maintained political stability compared to some other countries in the region. The government has implemented measures to ensure the safety of visitors and has a strong focus on tourism as an important sector of the economy.

Health and Hygiene: It's always advisable to take necessary health precautions when traveling to any country, including Morocco. Ensure you have up-to-date vaccinations, drink bottled water or use a water purifier, and practice good hygiene.

While Morocco is considered safe, it's important to stay informed about the latest travel advisories and follow any recommendations or warnings issued by your government or relevant authorities. Additionally, researching and respecting local customs, traditions, and laws will contribute to a more positive and safe travel experience in Morocco.

When is the best time to visit Morocco?

The best time to visit Morocco largely depends on your preferences and the specific experiences you seek. Morocco has a diverse climate due to its varied geography, which includes mountains, coastlines, and deserts. Here's a breakdown of the seasons to help you determine the best time to visit:

Spring (March to May): Spring is generally considered one of the best times to visit Morocco. The weather is mild and pleasant, with temperatures ranging from 15°C to 25°C (59°F to 77°F). It's a great time to explore cities like Marrakech, Fes, and Rabat, as well as enjoy hiking in the Atlas Mountains. The landscapes are lush and vibrant, and you can witness the blooming of flowers and blossoms.

Summer (June to August): Summers in Morocco can be quite hot, especially in inland areas and desert regions. Temperatures can soar above 40°C (104°F), making sightseeing and outdoor activities challenging during the day. However, coastal cities like Essaouira and Agadir offer a refreshing escape with milder temperatures and sea breezes. If you plan to visit the Sahara Desert, be prepared for scorching temperatures during the day but cooler nights.

Autumn (September to November): Autumn is another excellent time to visit Morocco, especially in September and October. The weather is pleasant, with temperatures ranging from 20°C to 30°C (68°F to 86°F). It's a great time to explore the imperial cities, trek in the mountains, and visit the desert without the extreme heat of summer. The autumn landscapes are also quite beautiful.

Winter (December to February): Winters in Morocco are relatively mild, especially along the coast. However, inland areas and the Atlas Mountains can experience colder temperatures, with some regions even seeing snowfall. Coastal cities like Casablanca and Tangier are popular during this time due to their milder climates. If you're interested in winter sports, the Atlas Mountains offer skiing and snowboarding opportunities.

It's worth noting that Morocco is a year-round destination, and each season has its own unique charm and experiences. However, considering the weather, activities, and crowds, spring (March to May) and autumn (September to November) are generally considered the best times to visit Morocco. These seasons offer pleasant temperatures, comfortable conditions for exploring, and opportunities to witness festivals and cultural events.

Do I require a visa to travel to Morocco?

The visa requirements for Morocco vary depending on your nationality and the duration of your visit. Here are some general guidelines regarding visas for visiting Morocco:

Visa-Free Countries: Citizens of many countries, including the United States, Canada, the United Kingdom, Australia, and most European Union countries, can enter Morocco visa-free for tourism purposes for up to 90 days. This means you can visit Morocco for leisure, sightseeing, and other non-work-related activities without needing a visa.

Visa on Arrival: Some nationalities, including citizens of certain African and Asian countries, may be eligible for a visa on arrival. This allows you to obtain a visa upon arrival at the airport or land border crossing. The visa on arrival is typically valid for a shorter period, usually up to 30 days. It's advisable to check with the Moroccan embassy or consulate in your country of residence to confirm if you're eligible for a visa on arrival.

Visa Requirements for Longer Stays: If you plan to stay in Morocco for more than the permitted visa-free period or for purposes other than tourism (such as work or study), you will likely need to apply for a visa before your trip. It's important to contact the nearest Moroccan embassy or consulate in your country to obtain the most up-to-date and accurate information regarding visa requirements, application procedures, and any supporting documents you may need.

Passport Validity: Regardless of your nationality, your passport should be valid for at least six months beyond your intended departure date from Morocco. Ensure that your passport has sufficient blank pages for entry and exit stamps.

It's essential to check the visa requirements specific to your nationality and the purpose and duration of your visit to Morocco. Visa regulations can change, so it's always best to consult with the Moroccan embassy or consulate or seek advice from a qualified travel agent or visa service to ensure you have the necessary documentation before you travel.

What is the currency in Morocco, and can I use credit cards?

The official currency of Morocco is the Moroccan Dirham (MAD). Here's some information about using currency and credit cards in Morocco:

Moroccan Dirham (MAD): It's advisable to carry some Moroccan Dirhams in cash for smaller expenses and places that may not accept credit cards. Currency exchange services are available at international airports, banks, and authorized exchange offices throughout major cities. It's recommended to exchange money at official exchange offices or banks to ensure you receive a fair exchange rate. Avoid exchanging money with street vendors or unauthorized individuals.

Credit Cards: Credit cards are widely accepted in hotels, upscale restaurants, larger shops, and tourist establishments in major cities such as Marrakech, Casablanca, and Fes. Visa and Mastercard are the most commonly accepted cards, while American Express and Discover may have more limited acceptance. It's always a good idea to carry some cash as well, as smaller businesses, local markets, and remote areas may prefer cash payments.

ATMs: ATMs (Automated Teller Machines) are widely available in major cities and towns throughout Morocco. They accept major international debit and credit cards, allowing you to withdraw cash in Moroccan Dirhams. It's advisable to use ATMs located within banks or reputable establishments for security purposes.

Notify Your Bank: Before traveling to Morocco, inform your bank or credit card provider about your travel plans. This helps prevent your cards from being blocked due to suspicious activity when used in a foreign country. It's also a good idea to note down the emergency contact numbers of your bank or credit card provider in case you need to report a lost or stolen card.

Cash Tips: Tipping in Morocco is customary, especially for services such as restaurants, hotels, and guides. While it's not mandatory, it's a common practice to leave a tip of around 10% of the bill or a small amount for services received. It's advisable to carry some small denomination notes for tipping purposes.

Currency Exchange Restrictions: Upon departure from Morocco, there are restrictions on taking Moroccan Dirhams out of the country. You can exchange your remaining Dirhams back to your home currency at international airports or authorized exchange offices before leaving.

Remember to exercise caution when using credit cards and ATMs to protect yourself against card skimming or fraud. Keep an eye on your card during transactions and use ATMs located in secure and well-lit areas.

Overall, having a combination of Moroccan Dirhams for cash transactions and a credit card for larger purchases or emergencies will help ensure you have convenient access to funds during your trip to Morocco.

Do I require any vaccinations to visit Morocco?

Before traveling to Morocco, it is advisable to consult with a healthcare professional or travel medicine clinic to get personalized advice based on your specific health condition and travel plans. However, here are some commonly recommended vaccinations for travelers visiting Morocco:

Routine Vaccinations: Ensure that your routine vaccinations, such as measles, mumps, rubella (MMR), diphtheria, tetanus, pertussis (DTaP), polio, and influenza, are up to date. These vaccinations are generally recommended for all travelers regardless of the destination.

Hepatitis A and B: The hepatitis A vaccine is recommended for all travelers to Morocco, as the virus can be contracted through contaminated food and water. The hepatitis B vaccine is also recommended for long-term travelers, those engaging in activities that may involve exposure to blood or bodily fluids, or anyone who may have intimate contact with the local population.

Typhoid: The typhoid vaccine is recommended for travelers who may consume food or drinks from potentially contaminated sources, particularly in areas with poor sanitation and hygiene practices.

Rabies: Rabies is present in Morocco, and the vaccine may be recommended for travelers who plan to spend a lot of time outdoors, engage in activities that increase the risk of animal bites, or visit remote areas where medical assistance may be limited.

Meningococcal Meningitis: While the risk is generally low, the meningococcal vaccine is recommended for certain travelers, particularly those visiting during the dry and dusty months from December to June or attending large gatherings or events.

Yellow Fever: A yellow fever vaccination certificate is required for travelers coming from or transiting through countries with a risk of yellow fever transmission. However, Morocco itself is not considered a yellow fever-endemic country.

It's important to note that these recommendations may vary based on factors such as your age, overall health, previous vaccination history, and specific travel plans. It's always best to consult with a healthcare professional or travel medicine clinic well in advance of your trip to get the most accurate and up-to-date advice regarding vaccinations for Morocco.

In addition to vaccinations, it's also essential to practice good hygiene, drink safe water, eat at reputable establishments, and take necessary precautions to prevent mosquito bites to ensure a healthy and enjoyable trip.

Is it safe to drink tap water in Morocco?

It is generally not recommended to drink tap water in Morocco. The tap water in most parts of the country, including cities like Marrakech, Casablanca, and Fes, is not considered safe for drinking. While the tap water is treated and meets basic quality standards, the infrastructure and sanitation systems may vary, and there is a risk of contamination.

To stay hydrated and avoid potential health issues, it is advisable to consume bottled water or water that has been properly treated or boiled. Bottled water is widely available and can be purchased from supermarkets, convenience stores, and hotels.

When purchasing bottled water, ensure that the seal is intact and the bottle is properly sealed. It's also a good practice to use bottled water for brushing teeth and rinsing your mouth.

In addition to drinking water, be cautious about consuming raw fruits and vegetables that may have been washed with tap water. It's recommended to peel fruits and vegetables or wash them thoroughly with safe water before consumption.

While tap water may not be suitable for drinking, it is generally safe to use for other daily activities such as showering, washing hands, and bathing. However, if you have sensitive skin or are prone to skin irritation, you may consider using bottled or treated water for these purposes as well.

Overall, by taking simple precautions and being mindful of the water you consume, you can enjoy a safe and healthy trip to Morocco.

Is it easy to summit Mount Toubkal?

Summiting Mount Toubkal, the highest peak in the Atlas Mountains and North Africa, is a challenging but achievable endeavor for many hikers and mountaineers. Here are some key points to consider regarding the difficulty and accessibility of climbing Mount Toubkal:

Physical Fitness: Climbing Mount Toubkal requires a good level of physical fitness and stamina. The ascent involves trekking at high altitude, with the summit reaching an elevation of 4,167 meters (13,671 feet). It is essential to prepare adequately by engaging in regular cardiovascular exercise and building endurance before attempting the climb.

Altitude Acclimatization: Altitude sickness can be a concern when ascending to higher altitudes. It is recommended to acclimatize properly by spending a couple of days at lower elevations before starting the trek. This allows your body to adjust gradually to the thinner air and reduces the risk of altitude-related illnesses.

Route Options: There are various routes to reach the summit of Mount Toubkal, with varying degrees of difficulty and duration. The most common and straightforward route is the standard ascent from the village of Imlil. This route usually takes two to three days, including an overnight stay at the Toubkal Refuge. It involves hiking on well-defined paths, crossing scree slopes, and tackling some steep sections.

Guide and Equipment: While it is possible to climb Mount Toubkal independently, it is highly recommended to hire a local guide or join an organized trekking group, especially if you are inexperienced or unfamiliar with the area. A guide can provide valuable assistance, local knowledge, and ensure your safety during the climb. They can also arrange accommodation, meals, and necessary equipment such as crampons and ice axes if needed.

Weather Conditions: The weather on Mount Toubkal can be unpredictable, even during the summer months. It is essential to check the weather forecast and be prepared for changing conditions. Winter climbs require mountaineering skills and additional equipment due to snow and ice.

Overall Difficulty: While climbing Mount Toubkal is challenging, it does not require technical climbing skills. With proper preparation, determination, and the assistance of a guide or experienced group, many reasonably fit individuals can successfully reach the summit. However, it's important to be aware of your personal limitations and make informed decisions regarding your safety and well-being.

Remember that climbing any mountain carries inherent risks, and it's crucial to prioritize safety, follow guidelines, and heed the advice of experienced guides or local authorities. By adequately preparing, respecting the mountain, and taking necessary precautions, you can have a rewarding and memorable experience summiting Mount Toubkal.

Moroccan-pattern-02

Our aim on our Morocco tours is to take you away from the crowds and provide you with the ultimate desert safari. We offer small desert camps in the Moroccan Sahara and the location of the camps is key.

Camp Al Koutban

Camp-Al-Koutban

The Berber desert camp ‘Camp Al Koutban’ is at the base of the remote dunes of Erg Chigaga, the longest ‘erg’ (sand sea) in Morocco, and off the beaten path. The Camp Al Koutban is encircled by smaller, rolling dunes for privacy which offer a great vantage point for sunset and sunrise.

Nomadic Camping

Nomadic Camping Morocco

A private, wild encampment in the Erg Sedrar dunes, to the east of Erg Chigaga great dunes. Two hours off-road drive from civilisation. The stay at the camp can be combined with a bespoke self-drive adventure in Morocco or with a tailor-made tour.

Deluxe Camp

Camping-Erg-Chigaga

One of the finest tented accommodations in Morocco’s Sahara Desert, the desert camp offers pure luxury at every level but retains the spirit of the culture of the Sahara Desert, given it is run exclusively by a Berber team who all originate from the area.

Travel With Purpose

Our team are the last generation to have grown up as children in the desert, previously practising a way of life that was unchanged in centuries. Our parents kept farms and livestock in the desert when water was freely available. That way of life became untenable more than three decades ago when the river to this region (Draa) was dammed near its source and the desert encroached on farmland.

Our responsible travel goals, purpose-driven, aim to support a very poor region of Morocco, educate visitors on the nomadic way of life, and care for our very fragile desert environment.

Moroccan-man-cooking-outdoors

  • Environment

Tourism is the mainstay in this region of Morocco. Young people normally have to move away from the local village (Mhamid El Ghizlane) to find work elsewhere.

However, we aim to put local knowledge and skills to work locally through employing local guides, local cooks, local camel-handlers and local drivers. Young men who are often the main breadwinners of their extended families will be the source of funding all living costs for 3 generations of their families.

Employing local men ensures that they in turn benefit their own community by contributing money there.

  • We pay fair wages and garner loyalty from our team through fair and equal treatment.
  • We buy all of our food from local shopkeepers. Fruit and vegetables are seasonal only.
  • We donate to animal welfare charities.
  • We aim to care for our very fragile environment and show visitors the beauty of the desert wilderness.
  • Having grown up in this region of the desert we are acutely aware of the scarcity of water.
  • We only transport enough water on our desert hikes for food preparation and hand-washing. We do not transport water for ‘showering’ which is non essential for responsible travel.  We don’t encourage desert hiking trips longer than 6 days, again to conserve water.
  • We customise desert hiking on a private basis, and certainly for group sizes no larger than 16. Most of our hiking trips are arranged for couples and individuals who want peace and quiet.
  • We encourage our visitors to collect litter whenever they find it in the desert, as we instruct our local guides and camel-handlers to do so.
  • We ask that our visitors take their litter out of the desert with them or hand it over to their guide who will bring it out of the desert.
  • We do not encourage the rental of quad biking which is harmful to the environment.
  • We offer our visitors information on the flora and fauna of the desert environment in the Iriqui National Park before they visit the region.
  • We encourage our visitors to travel by public bus to the desert frontier.   ctma.ma
  • We encourage our visitors to visit Jarjeer Mules and/or SPANA if they are staying in Marrakech.
  • We reuse paper and recycle card/plastic in the office. We do not produce printed brochures.

We aim to offer authentic, simple experiences which are unique to this part of the world. We aim to educate visitors on the nomadic way of life.

Please refer to the introduction on our background. We are passionate about sharing our nomadic background and desert experience with our visitors. The majority of our team are indigenous Amazigh, or Sahrawi (whose forebears migrated from much further south). The local guide will act as a bridge between the visitors and the cook and camel-handler.

On the desert hikes, our team wear traditional dress and we give our visitors each a desert turban to protect from the sun/wind when hiking.

Examples of the nomadic experiences we offer – walking for several hours each day accompanied by a camel caravan; preparing tea on the campfire; preparing sand-bread in the embers of the fire; singing traditional songs in the evening at camp; using the stars to navigate.

We provide detailed   Frequently Asked Questions   pages to visitors once they confirm a desert trip. We promote responsible travel/packing tips.

We encourage our visitors to visit one of the remaining ‘Ksar’ (series of earth-built dwellings) at Mhamid, on the Draa Valley. It is possible to visit a local family and take tea with them in their home, if so our guide will offer a small donation to the family.

“We booked a 14 day trip with Wild Morocco – and every moment exceeded our expectations. From the intimate riads with fabulous food to the local tours of Berber villages and tea with nomad families, we experienced the real Morocco – customs, culture, food, connections with the people.”

Good to know

Before you book a trip with us/ tours with us.

Morocco is on every traveller’s bucket list, especially the ones who admire cultural diversity and are fascinated by how much they can learn about what makes Morocco iIn this same regard, and as a Morocco travel agency that’s been in the business for decades, we highly recommend that you take a few things into account. Morocco is a Muslim country that has its traditions, sacred days and clothing styles that remain conservative, especially in small towns. It’s also where a dish is only worth eating when you add enough, or a lot of species to it.

7 epic adventures in Morocco

adventure tourism in morocco

Morocco is a paradise for adventurous travellers! Most of the country is still rugged, untouched terrain, offering many off the beaten path experiences. From the Atlantic to the Atlas Mountains all the way down to the Sahara Desert you can find adventurous things to do. Which ones you choose might depend on the time of year you are visiting Morocco , the summer is too hot for the desert, in winter there is too much snow in the mountains. But the coast is great all year round.

Long-distance hiking in the Sahara

To me this is the ultimate adventure in Morocco, and I know what I’m talking about, because I have hiked many times in the Sahara. The first time for 9 days in and around Erg Chigaga, the second time for 16 days from Zagora to Merzouga . On that second trip I went with just one other woman and of course a local crew. On foot, with a few camels to carry our things. No internet, no phone reception, just nature, fantastic views, great food and the hospitality of the Berber people of Morocco.

Small camel caravane in the sahara in morocco. two men guiding the camels. dunes on the horizon. gravel and small bushes on the flat ground. epic adventures in morocco, long distance desert hinking

It was a real adventure, as there was no one who had walked that whole distance before, at least no one still around. The guide and the camel man each knew part of it, but they also couldn’t say how long it would take. Flexibility was definitely necessary. They had to find good campsites, with shadow and out of the wind. They had to find wells, so that we had water for the camels, dishes, and sometimes even to wash out hair. They had to find spots where we could bake bread in the sand for breakfast.

Check this posts about the deserts in Morocco for more general information .

Now that I am living in Morocco, we are offering these kinds of adventure hikes for everyone. We did one small group hike before the pandemic shut down the world, and we are hoping to start again soon. So, if you and your friends are up for an adventure of a lifetime, get in touch. Or check out our website Berber Adventure Tours here . You can see photos and videos of the trip in my Instagram stories highlights .

Trekking Jebel Toubkal

Another epic adventure in Morocco is summiting Jebel Toubkal, the highest mountain in Northern Africa at 4167 metres. It is fairly easily accessible, from Imlil, a small mountain town just over an hour’s drive from Marrakech . You can hike to the top from Imlil in 2 or 3 days, depending on your fitness and ambition. There is some snow or ice at the top almost all year, but no special equipment is needed outside of the winter months. Especially in the warmer months this is one of the best adventures to have in Morocco as it lets you escape the heat.

You need to book a guide, and you can choose to book a donkey to carry part of your equipment.

adventure tourism in morocco

If you decide to trek Mount Toubkal while you are already in Morocco, you can rent or buy the necessary things in Imlil. There are plenty of small shops selling mostly used clothes, shoes and other equipment for reasonable prices.

If you are not quite ambitious enough to want to summit Jebel Toubkal, there are many other treks around Imlil that you can choose from. Just talk to one of the local guides to find one that fits your fitness level and number of days you’d like to hike.

Tour Tip: You can also book group tours that include trekking in the Atlas and summiting Mt. Toubkal. Here is one with G Adventures .

Paragliding in Dakhla

I haven’t been to Dakhla yet, but I went paragliding in the Dolomites in Italy. It is one of the most exciting things I have ever done, and I imagine going paragliding in Dakhla will be similar. Just instead of mountain tops, you get to enjoy views over the endless sand dunes, the lagoon and the Atlantic Ocean.

It is a great feeling to glide almost soundlessly through the air and, if the conditions allow, climb higher and higher into the sky.

If you prefer to stay closer to the ground, or water for that matter, you can also go kite surfing in the lagoon.

Climbing Todra Gorge

If you like climbing, the Todra gorge is the best place to have your adventure in Morocco. Especially in the last part of the gorge, before the river reaches Tinghir, the walls are steep and high, up to 160 m. Here you can find around 150 climbing routes for all levels of experience.

rock climber on the rock face of the todra gorge in Morocco. climbing adventures in Morocco

It is probably best to plan your climbing adventure around dry season, otherwise the gorge might transform into a raging river and the climbing sites could be inaccessible.

Check out this company for your climbing adventures in Morocco.

Kite Surfing Essaouira

Essaouira is also called the windy city, which should be a hint at the conditions you will find for kite surfing here. The city itself is really nice, my favourite in all of Morocco. And the beach starts just outside the medina walls, making it a very accessible adventure.

Whether you are experienced and just want to rent equipment or a complete beginner looking for classes, there are plenty of surf schools around with all this on offer.

adventure tourism in morocco

You can even book this as a day or overnight trip from Marrakech .

And if you want a few adventures in one place, you can also book camel rides, horseback riding and quad tours in Essaouira.

Horse riding at Terres d’Amanar (bonus zip lining)

If you are into horseback riding and amazing landscapes, you have to come to Terres d’Amanar in the foothills of the Atlas just outside of Marrakech. The canyons here are spectacular and the horses are very surefooted Arabs. It is probably best to book in advance, and you can choose from 30 min to full day rides.

adventure tourism in morocco

Enjoy riding through the trees along the canyons, maybe even down into the shadow of the ridgeline. For full day rides you will bring a picnic lunch to eat under a pine tree with awesome views.

Bonus adventure here is the zipline park with 4 ziplines and a couple of suspension bridges.

If you are a water lover, maybe try canyoning in the Atlas . Hiking downstream, climbing, abseiling and jumping from cliffs, all included in this fun excursion. It is definitely one of the most exciting adventures in Morocco. All equipment is provided, as is of course a guide to make sure you’ll enjoy the trip.

adventure tourism in morocco

This is an experience for the real thrill lovers. Canyoning gets your adrenalin pumping, depending on water levels there is hardly a place for a proper break. But, when it is hot, it is the perfect adventure activity to cool down.

Just make sure to inquire before, as availability varies with seasons and water levels.

Why Choose Self-Drive Holidays in Morocco?

Freedom to Explore:   Self-driving is the best way to navigate winding roads that lead to the most breathtaking views at your own pace. Self-driving offers the liberty to detour, stay in hidden gems, and immerse yourself in the authentic Moroccan experience.

Cultural Odyssey:  Each turn leads to a new chapter in Morocco’s diverse story. From the bustling markets (souks) to remote Berber villages, you’ll soak in the varied tapestry of Moroccan life.

Scenic Splendor:  From the Sahara’s golden dunes to the snow-capped Atlas Mountains, Morocco’s landscapes will leave you awe-inspired at every turn.

When to go Morocco self-drive holidays

Spring (March to May) and fall (September to November) offer the best weather for a self-drive adventure in Morocco—nice and warm during the day, cool at night. If you’re up for the Sahara Desert, go between October and April to avoid the scorching heat. Coastal spots are great year-round, but summers might get windy. Just be mindful of Ramadan if you’re planning your trip around it, as it can affect local businesses’ hours.

Planning Your Self-Drive Adventure

Choosing Your Route:  Begin in Marrakech, the bustling heart of Morocco, and chart your course based on your interests. Coastal towns like Essaouira, the desert wonders of Merzouga, or the historic cities of Fes and Chefchaouen offer diverse experiences.

Vehicle Selection:  Opt for a reliable 4×4 or a sturdy sedan—something suitable for both highways and off-the-beaten-path adventures. Local car rental agencies in cities or airports provide a variety of options.

Navigating Moroccan Roads:  While roads are generally good, some remote areas might have rough patches. GPS and offline maps are your best friends. Additionally, signage can vary, so brushing up on basic French or Arabic phrases for communication could be helpful.

Must-See Destinations

Marrakech:  Lose yourself in the maze-like Medina, visit the vibrant Jardin Majorelle, and experience the energy of the Djemaa el Fna square.

Sahara Desert:  Trek on camelback through the Erg Chebbi dunes, camp under a blanket of stars, and witness sunrise or sunset—a surreal spectacle.

Chefchaouen:  Known as the Blue Pearl, this town boasts narrow, winding streets painted in calming shades of blue—a photographer’s dream.

Fes:  Explore the UNESCO-listed Fes el-Bali, one of the world’s largest car-free urban areas, and discover its ancient, labyrinthine alleys.

Practical Tips for a Smooth Journey

Cultural Sensitivities:  Respect local customs; dressing modestly in rural areas and during religious festivals shows appreciation for their culture.

Accommodations:  Morocco offers a variety of accommodations—from luxurious riads to budget-friendly guesthouses. Booking ahead in popular tourist spots is advisable.

Cuisine Exploration:  Savor the delightful array of Moroccan dishes. Tagines, couscous, and mint tea are just the beginning of your gastronomic journey.

Safety Measures:  While Morocco is generally safe, practice caution with belongings in crowded areas. Also, familiarize yourself with local driving laws.

What are the roads like in Morocco?

Morocco roads! It’s a mixed bag of surprises, with everything from smooth highways to off-road terrain to keep you on your toes. During your self-drive trip on Moroccan roads, will encounter the many police and the Royal Gendarmerie controls. And also hidden officers equipped with speed cameras. Keep an eye on your speed before you fall into these speed traps along the way.

Highways & Main Roads:  Around cities and popular tourist spots, you’ll find well-maintained highways that make cruising a breeze. But, be ready for some unexpected potholes or occasional road repairs that might slow you down a bit.

Off the Beaten Path:  Now, this is where the real adventure begins! Some routes off the main track could be a tad rough and bumpy. Picture dusty trails winding through picturesque landscapes, occasionally throwing in a surprise or two—a stone or two, maybe even a grazing goat crossing your path.

Mountain Roads:  Driving through the Atlas Mountains can be a real treat for the eyes but might test your driving skills. Twisting roads hugging cliffs, offering breathtaking views—but remember, it’s a slow and steady affair on these curvy routes.

Local Traffic & Unexpected Encounters:  In bustling towns or medinas, be prepared for some traffic jams or maneuvering through narrow streets where pedestrians, mopeds, and carts all dance together in delightful chaos.

Navigational Challenges:  Signage might not always be crystal clear, especially in remote areas. Embrace the spirit of adventure by relying on GPS or good old-fashioned asking the locals for guidance.

In recent years, the roads in Morocco have seen major changes with some exciting challenges along the way. It’s all part of your Moroccan adventure!

What do you need to drive in Morocco?

To drive in Morocco you need a valid driver’s license from your home country and you must be 18 years old. Some car rental companies may not rent you the car if your driver’s license is less than one year old. Make sure you have your passport, vehicle registration, rental contract, and insurance papers with you when driving. Oh, and have some cash on hand for tolls and unexpected expenses!

Final Thoughts

A self-drive adventure in Morocco promises an enchanting odyssey filled with diverse landscapes, rich history, and warm hospitality. Embrace the spontaneity of the road, delve into the culture, and let Morocco’s allure captivate your senses.

Pack your curiosity, embark on this road less traveled, and create memories that will last a lifetime.

Solo traveller Nicole Todd captures the highlights of Morocco on 35mm film

Analog adventures: a travel photography guide to Morocco

Solo traveller nicole todd captures the highlights of morocco on 35mm film.

Since a young age, I’ve found joy in capturing moments through photography, and especially grown to love the art of shooting on grainy analog film. I'm immensely proud of my Highlights of Morocco trip photography and eager to share my perspective as inspiration for your own travels.

Travelling solo for the first time can be a little daunting, but joining a small group tour (and yes, I’m admittedly biased as a Specialist Global Connection Officer at G Adventures) made it a whole lot easier. I know when I first stepped off the plane by myself I was nervous, but there was a driver waiting to bring me to my starting point in Casablanca. The drive was long and I stared out the window marvelling at the beautiful city stretching out in front of me thinking of what to snap first.

That evening, I met my fellow travellers and Chief Experience Officer (CEO) for the next 15 days in Morocco. Everyone was incredibly welcoming, making me feel at home in a country I had never visited before. The charm of small group travel lies in the immediate opportunity to make new friends upon arrival.

With my trusty Minolta X-700 and a few rolls of film at the ready, I spent the next two weeks exploring Morocco with this cheerful group of people and an expert guide. As we moved from places like the blue city of Chefchaouen to the salty air of Essaouira, my goal was to highlight the remarkable beauty of a country rich in artistic expression.

Our first stop was in Tangier, a beautiful port city and trade centre, connecting North Africa and Europe for centuries.

dreamy skies and turquoise blue water beckon from a rocky seaside overlook in Tangier, Morocco

Next up and known as the Blue City, Chefchaouen offered photo opportunities around every corner. There are different beliefs on why the city was painted blue to start. Some say the blue hues deter bugs, some say it represents the sky and brings people closer to God.

The ancient Roman ruins of Volubilis were calling to us next and our local guide was incredible! He was eager to share his wealth of knowledge on this UNESCO World Heritage Site. We just slowly walked around and explored a place renowned for its mosaics that remain in good condition.

Onward to Fez! The medina was a maze of narrow winding tunnels, occasionally opening up to expansive sections. This vibrant market is filled with numerous vendors and bustling trade. Our guide was fantastic and shared his extensive knowledge of his home.

For lunch, we stopped at the magnificent Ryad Nejjarine where we dined like royalty on delicious tagine. As I glanced up, I saw sunlight streaming through the roof of this exquisitely crafted and impeccably preserved building, dating back to the 13th century.

I was amazed by the pristine condition of the plaster and woodwork. The staff graciously permitted us to explore the upper level so I could capture the scene catching my eye.

Filled up with the wonders of Fez, we were off on a 10 hour road trip to Merzouga, right in the Sahara Desert. I know it sounds like a really long drive but the scenery was so gorgeous along the way that it flew by. We also made several stops including one to see some cheeky Barbary macaques (Berber Monkeys)!

Reaching Merzouga just after sunset, I was unable to resist the allure of the sand dunes and ran around like a child filled with wonder.

Our guide mentioned that it is often said that one regains a childlike spirit upon reaching the desert, and I can attest to its truth—I couldn't hold back the urge to frolic and play in the sand. My fellow travellers were just as rapt and happy to take in the endless mounds of sand at twilight.

The following day, we embarked on a sunset camel ride into the dunes. It was undoubtedly the highlight of our tour and made for endless Moroccan photographic memories.

After our desert adventure, we journeyed to Todra Gorge, an utterly breathtaking region of Morocco. The air was crisp and invigorating, and nothing compared to starting our day with a refreshing morning walk through the local landscape.

sage green palms, trees, and grasses contrast against the baked brown cliff sides of Todra Gorge

Back on the road again! We headed to the famed earthen clay architecture of Ait Ben Haddou for a night before heading off again to the High Atlas Mountains. Impressive scenes abound, but it’s also good to keep your camera ready for those simpler moments like stopping to grab a roadside coffee on the way.

Next, we were off to the High Atlas Mountains to spend a night in a mountain Gite. The dinner we had was delicious and we spent the night bunked surrounded by hills, chatting and playing games over tea.

Our last destination before Marrakech, we hit the coastal town of Essaouira and it was simply stunning! I felt completely at ease here, free to shop, stroll, and explore at my own pace on solo excursions. The picturesque views of the ocean and the laid-back atmosphere lend this charming little town an irresistible allure.

As our adventure drew to a close, we made our way to Marrakech for our final days together. It was our chance to delve into the vibrant energy of this bustling city before returning home.

By the time we arrived in Marrakech, I felt completely at home in Morocco as a group or on my own. I strolled through the market, sharing treats I had purchased from a local vendor whose family had owned the store for years.

My journey in Morocco came to an end, leaving me with cherished memories to last a lifetime. Throughout the experience, I felt a sense of belonging and comfort. I would return without hesitation and wholeheartedly encourage you to do the same. Don’t forget to pack your favourite camera and a heart open to adventure!

adventure tourism in morocco

From India Today Spice | On a Merc adventure in Morocco

Morocco simmers, stews, and sizzles, in imagination, literature, and reel much as it does on the magical streets of its charming cities. With its epic landscapes and ancient mystique, it makes for prime road trip territory. This is where our journey unfolded; an experience that transcended mere travel to venture into the realm of the unforgettable. The idea: to odyssey through the vibrant landscapes and cultural tapestry of this ancient land in the Mercedes-Benz GLS. With the vehicles working not just as transport but as companions in a voyage of discovery and  indulgence, we began our journey at Marrakesh with a grand welcome at Hotel La Mamounia.

As the sun began its descent over the enchanting city of Marrakesh, the legendary La Mamounia unveiled her grandeur and elegance in true Moorish style with intricate detailing and unabashed opulence. Tucked away within acres of verdant gardens, our picture-perfect lavish accommodations came with panoramic views of the sprawling greens. If that wasn't a sight for sore eyes, exquisite massages at the tranquil spa, followed by equally decadent dining options definitely were.

Marrakesh to Dades—A landscape on the pages of history

As the first light of dawn painted the sky pink and gold, the gleaming fleet of Mercedes-Benz GLS vehicles embarked on the first leg of our adventure, weighted by anticipation and possibility. The leisurely drive through the winding streets of Marrakesh—bustling souks, the Jemaa el-Fnaa square, and the kaleidoscope of colours that adorned every corner—was a momentary lull compared to the grandiose vistas and drive terrain offered by the majestic Atlas mountains. The Mercedes-AMG GLS 63 has been groomed to precisely negotiate this kind of rugged terrain with ease, its all-wheel drive and adaptive suspension ensuring a smooth and comfortable ride. Our journey was punctuated by historic landmarks and scenic viewpoints, where ancient architecture and panoramic vistas sat cheek by jowl to entice and excite. Lunch was at Hassan, nestled cosily in the lap of the mountains.

After our sumptuous lunch, we embarked on a thrilling drive deeper into the heart of the High Atlas Mountains. As we ascended, the distant peaks that still retained traces of winter, shimmered in the distance with snowy patches. The Mercedes-AMG GLS 63 navigated the challenging terrain with confidence, its powerful 4.0-litre V8 biturbo engine and responsive handling making light work of the steep inclines and hairpin bends. The active roll stabilization and AMG RIDE CONTROL+ suspension provided additional stability and comfort on the uneven roads.

As the afternoon sun dipped below the horizon, we arrived at Hotel Xaluca in Dades, a luxurious retreat perched in the Dades Valley. Even though the rooms at Hotel Xaluca Dades were a delightful blend of traditional Moroccan décor and modern amenities, what I really wanted was to sink into clean sheets and a soft bed, 1,000 thread count cotton notwithstanding.

Dades to Merzouga—A passage through time and terrain

Dawn departures are almost de rigueur on any road trip, and this one was no different. With the desert sands of Merzouga beckoning in the distance, the wheels of the Mercedes-Maybach GLS 600 4MATIC tuned magic on its head as we savored the luxurious comfort and refined performance as we traversed the starkly beautiful landscape. The Mercedes-Maybach GLS 600's advanced air suspension made for an exceptionally smooth ride over the undulating terrain, while its opulent interior, complete with high-quality diamond-pattern quilting and ambient lighting, kept us in utmost comfort. The rear-seat passengers enjoyed the MBUX Multi-Seat Entertainment system, which offers a comprehensive range of infotainment and comfort features, including the "Hey Mercedes" voice assistant.

Lunch was at Auberge Meteroid in Alnif, where the tantalizing aromas promised a culinary adventure almost as exciting as our wheeled one. As we made our way towards Merzouga, the landscape transformed, making way for the endless expanse of the Sahara Desert. Here, amidst the shifting sands and vast dunes, the Mercedes-Benz GLS 580 proved its mettle, effortlessly gliding over the desert terrain with grace and precision.

With shifting sands on cue, and a GLS within your grip, dune bashing comes with the territory. The powerful engine of the GLS, and the agile handling it allows made it almost easy to subdue the sandy terrain. The advanced all-wheel drive system provided superior traction and stability, ensuring we could navigate the dunes with ease and confidence. As we soared over the towering dunes, the exhilaration of the experience was matched only by the awe-inspiring beauty of the desert landscape stretching out before us. It was a moment of pure adrenaline—an unforgettable highlight of our journey through the Sahara Desert.

With the desert in all its golden glory, could an oasis be far behind? Hotel Riad Xaluca is a rich nod to the cultural heritage of the region. As the sounds painted our backdrop, we dined on sumptuous dishes prepared with locally sourced ingredients, savouring each bite as the sun disappeared behind the dunes. With an adventurous day behind us and a cool evening ahead, spent lounging in the infinity pool, luxury was a foregone conclusion.

Much like with great food, memories from the road continue to haunt long after the char has scorched the tar. Until we meet again, Morocco, you will always hold a special place in our hearts.
