The Top 5 Xi’an Day Trips

There is a saying in China: "If you want to see what China has looked like in the last 10 years, you should go to Shenzhen; if you want to see what China looked like 100 years ago, you must go to Beijing; if you want to see what China looked like 1,000 years ago, then you should go to Xi'an". Xi'an, along with Rome, Athens, and Cairo, is known as being one of the four famous ancient capitals in the world.

Here, we have provided information about the top five day trips from/in Xi'an. If you have limited time in Xi'an, these will help you experience the city in an efficient way. If you have more time, you can combine these day trips to enrich your experience.

1. Xi'an One-Day Highlights Tour -Terracotta Army, Ancient City Wall, and Muslim Quarter

When it comes to Xi'an, people will think of the Terracotta Army , which is the typical highlight there. You can't say you have been to Xi'an if you haven't visited the Terracotta Army.

It was constructed to accompany the tomb of China's first emperor to guard him in the afterlife. You can explore the site of the Terracotta Army to learn about how the warriors were made, how they have been preserved, and what their original colors were.

Your private guide will accompany you to a local cave dwelling where a craftsman makes terracotta warriors in a traditional way. You can learn traditional techniques that were used 2,000 years ago and try making a mini warrior yourself.

Xi'an City Wall is a landmark of Xi'an and it surrounds the old city in a large square-shaped area. You can take a leisurely stroll or cycle on the wall to enjoy its inner and outer walls, watchtowers, moat, and landscaped environs, as well as slightly elevated views of the city.

Experience the profound Muslim cultural atmosphere in the Muslim Quarter where you can see a number of ancient architectural buildings and find both traditional dishes and special snacks, such as roujiamo – marinated beef or lamb stuffed inside a freshly baked bun – and cold noodles, which can be made from rice or from flour.

  • 4-Day Xi'an and Huashan Mountain Tour
  • 14-Day China Natural Wonders Discovery

2. Xi'an One-Day Culture Discovery Tour

Xi'an reached its high point during the Han Dynasty (Western Han 206 BC – 9 AD, Eastern Han 25–220) and the Tang Dynasty (618–907). You can still find traces of the prosperity of these dynasties in today's Xi'an.

Pay a visit to Hanyang Tomb - Emperor Jingdi's mausoleum. The Han Dynasty reached its peak in the reign of Emperor Jingdi and his son, Wudi. You can discover the reasons it reached its peak at that time by seeing the relics displayed and the stories shared by your guide.

Visit Shaanxi History Museum to appreciate the most typical items used during the Han and Tang dynasties. You will understand the impact that cultural exchange with other countries and regions had.

Go to an ancient academy to learn about China's traditional costumes. There, the teacher will tell you stories behind Hanfu. You can try one on to get a unique taste of the ancient culture. Dressed in Hanfu and wandering around in a beautiful garden, you will feel as though you have stepped back into ancient China from 1,000 years ago.

3. Luoyang Day Trip from Xi'an

Luoyang is an ancient city with a long history and splendid culture. It was once the capital city for a period during the Tang Dynasty. It takes 1½ hours to get to Luoyang from Xi'an by bullet train.

Traveling to Luoyang, the site of the Longmen Grottoes is the attraction you simply cannot miss. The Longmen Grottoes area, along with the Mogao Caves, the Yungang Grottoes, and the Maijishan Grottoes, is one of China's four famous ancient grottoes.

Hundreds of thousands of statues and caves are carved and dug into two mountains sprawling over 1 kilometer (0.6 mile) from south to north. The site is a man-made architectural marvel.

Visit Luoyang Ancient Tombs Museum . It is the first ancient tombs museum in the world, displaying the characteristics of typical tombs in Luoyang over a period of 3,000 years from the Xia Dynasty (c. 2100–1600 BC) to the Jin (265–420) and Song (960–1279) dynasties.

You can also go to the cradle of Chinese Buddhism - White Horse Temple . See the architectural style used for Chinese temples and watch people praying. Seeing the statues of the Eighteen Arhats in the Hall of Mahavira is the highlight - they are invaluable treasures in White Horse Temple as well as in China.

4. Huashan Day Trip from Xi'an

Mount Hua (Huashan) is one of the five sacred Taoist mountains in China. It will take 1½ hours' drive to get there from Xi'an. A variety of temples and other religious structures nestle on its ridges and peaks.

Mount Hua is well-known for its sheer cliffs and plunging ravines. Because of this, it is known as "the most precipitous mountain under heaven" and attracts many hikers for the challenge of climbing it. You can also take a round-trip cable car ride to get up and down the mountain, and can enjoy the scenery along the way.

It has five peaks: North Peak, Middle Peak, East Peak, West Peak, and South Peak. East Peak is the best place for watching a sunrise. Walking on the cliffside narrow plank at South Peak is a challenge for thrill-seekers.

5. Pingyao Day Trip from Xi'an

Pingyao is a well-preserved Ming Dynasty town. The town features ancient buildings and flagstone streets, and the locals have a traditional lifestyle. It takes 3 hours to get from Xi'an to Pingyao by bullet train.

There, you can visit the Rishengchang Former Bank – the first draft bank in China – and learn how it operated. Visit Armed Escort Company Museum, which highlights a special business - the protection of the tangible currency. You can go up to the ancient city wall at dusk and have a glimpse of the town before darkness arrives.

After breakfast, drive about 40 km to discover one of the greatest man-made wonders in the world - the Terracotta Warriors and Horses , built by the first emperor of China Qin Shihuang to protect him in his afterlife. Over 8,000 life-size warriors, horses and chariots, buried in 3 pits for more than 2,000 years until uncovered by a local farmer in 1974, form an ancient military army with complete battle units of infantry, cavalry, etc. Standing in front of these figures, one can’t help being amazed not only by the ambition of Emperor Qin Shihuang but also by the fabulous artistic skills of ancient Chinese artisans. (Before the Terracotta Warriors Museum visit, you will have a rare opportunity to make a miniature Terracotta Warrior on your own under the instruction of a local potter.) After lunch, return to Xian to visit Da Cien Temple , a famous Buddhist sutra translation site during the Tang Dynasty. Giant Wild Goose Pagoda  is the most famous building in the temple. The pagoda, rising to a height of 64.5 meters, was built by the famous Buddhist master Xuanzang to preserve classic scriptures he bought back from India during the early Tang Dynasty. Xuanzang was the prototype character for Tang Seng in the famous Chinese novel “Journey to the West”. (Note: It costs an extra 30 RMB if you want to climb up the Big Wild Goose Pagoda) After (or before) visiting the Giant Wild Goose Pagoda, you will be provided a free experience of  trying on the Hanfu  which is the solemn costume of the emperors and their families, the ministers and the noble in the ancient dynasties of China. Seize this rare opportunity to take some photos to record this unique memory! This evening you will be offered an interesting visit to Grand Tang Dynasty Ever Bright City which is a great place to walk, enjoy amazing nightscape and recall the prosperity and glory of the mighty Tang Dynasty most importantly. Seeing this area at night is totally different than during the day as the lighting is marvelous yet tastefully done. Day 3 Xian City Cultural Exploration (B, L) Today's highlights: Ancient City Wall, Local Family Visit, Bell Tower, Muslim Quarter
After breakfast, go to spend a leisure time on the Ancient City Wall , the largest and best-preserved ancient city wall in China. Just like the merchants and envoys on the Silk Road thousands of years ago, you will enter the interior of the city walls through the Hanguang Gate . There you will visit a mini museum to see the real Tang Dynasty city wall ruins from over 1400 years ago, including gateways, cross-sections of the wall, and the remains of water channels. After the museum visit, get up to the city wall to enjoy a leisure stroll and pleasant panoramic views of modern Xian. Rent a bike (extra cost: 45RMB) to enjoy a relaxing cycling on the Wall is strongly recommended. The cycling routes and duration are flexible. Feel free to discuss with your tour guide. Then you will visit a local family to find out what is the daily living of a traditional Chinese Family. You will also be taught to make Chinese dumplings under the friendly instruction of the host. Enjoy lunch with the local family. In the afternoon, you will go to enjoy some leisure time around Zhonggulou Square where the famous landmarks of Bell Tower and Drum Towers stand on. There is a Chinese saying, “morning bell and evening drum”, which describes the ancient Chinese stroke the bell in the bell tower and beat the drum at the drum tower to announce the time of the day. With grand side and superb decoration, the Bell Tower and Drum Towers in Xian are the most grandiose architectures of their kinds. You will climb up to one of the towers to enjoy the panoramic view of Xian. The rest time of this afternoon is to spend some leisure time at the bustling and lively Muslim Quarter , a place where you can try different local snacks and explore Muslim culture. Don't miss the Great Mosque of Xian which is a fusion of Chinese culture and Islamic culture, a sacred religious site with huge ancient architectural complex, also a surprisingly quiet land away from bust Muslim Street. After the Great Mosque visit, you will be escorted back to your hotel. (If you want to stay more time at the Muslim Quarter for dinner and relaxing, or want to explore the nearby Bell & Drum Towers on your own, please let your tour guide know.) Day 4 Xian Departure (B) Today's highlights: Xian Museum, Hanyangling Museum
This morning you will go to visit the Small Wild Goose Pagoda and Xi’an Museum to learn a lot about the history and culture about the ancient city of Xi’an. They are together located in a clean and beautiful park. The Small Wild Goose Pagoda is rather smaller and 55 years younger than its “sister” - the Giant Wild Goose Pagoda. Built during 707 to 709 AD, the pagoda is 43.4 meters tall with 13 tiers (originally 15 tiers), looking like a very tall rectangular pyramid. An interesting fact about the Small Wild Goose Pagoda is that the pagoda has survived nearly 70 earthquakes, and now still standing firm and sturdy. You can walk around to appreciate the beautiful design and take photos of the pagoda. Then you will go to visit Xi’an Museum which is only several minutes’ walking from the Small Wild Goose Pagoda. This museum has more than 130,000 pieces of jade relics, seals, paintings, porcelains, Buddhist statues, stone carvings and many other precious relics. Chinese calligraphy in Tangbo Art Museum . You will be taught to use ink brush to write some basic Chinese words (maybe your name).--> Next is an educational visit to Hanyangling . Compared with the Terracotta Warriors, Hanyangling is much less crowded so that you can enjoy a quiet lesson in archaeology. Here you can find many mini terracotta figures of not only warrior and horses, but also maidens and other animals. You actually walk on glass over top of the archaeological site, which gives an intriguing perspective. The rest of the day is free for you until be escorted to catch the flight/train to leave Xian. Tour ends. Terracotta Figures in Hanyanglilng Museum Small Wild Goose Pagoda in June

Check What our delighted customers are saying about our services

We have just arrived at our next destination in Thailand, and our Malaysian friends have arrived back home in Penang.

Thank you so much for all the arrangements, which was initiated over 4 years ago and disrupted by the outbreak of Covid 19. I am especially thankful that you have accepted my frequent request to add additional participants which eventually increased from 2 to 4 to 6 and finally to 7.

The tour itinerary was very comprehensive covering not just Tibet itself but also the two cities where Tibetans have strong influence, namely Xining and Shangri-La.

The only regret we have is not being able to take the train from Xining to Lhasa as this was to be one of the highlights of this trip, but the flight between these two cities was an excellent one with a beautiful view of the snow capped mountains.

I would certainly recommend China Discovery to anyone who would wish to visit China, especially the Tibetan region.

Thanks again.

Best regards,

Tibet Tour

Thank you for the arrangement last time, my family had great times.

Apologies for my delay in responding. We only came home last week and have been busy with work getting back up to date.

We had a fantastic tour. David was an excellent guide. He was very knowledgeable about the area and responsive to our needs. He helped us with recommendations for food and shopping and we really enjoyed his company for the 8 days. He knew when to give us information about the area and also when to give us some space and quiet to enjoy the views.

The itinerary suited everything we were looking for. David also adapted it to the weather for the best views and experiences and arranged extra stops, at our request. We couldn't have asked for a better tour or guide. The driver and car was also excellent, very clean and comfortable. The hotels met our expectations and were really well located. Overall the tour exceeded our expectations and I would be happy to share my experiences anywhere you would like me to. I'll send on some photos separately this weekend that you can use as you wish.

In terms of any suggestions, it is just to give some extra information before your guests travel, as many things are quite different in China than in Europe or the USA. I suggest giving the following advices to clients when they book the tour:

• Bring a small backpack to carry snacks and water each day.

• There are limited food options within the national park, so you may wish to bring some favourite snacks from home. You can purchase snacks in the local town, however they may not suit your taste so it is good to have some familiar snacks to hand. Some fruit, chocolate, crisps and nuts are available locally.

• You will walk quite a bit during the trip (including steps), so make sure you have good walking shoes with you.

• Hotel rooms typically do not have travel safes in them, so be prepared to carry your cash/ valuables with you each day.

• Coffee is not popular in this region of China. There may be days that coffee is not available. We suggest bringing some coffee sachets with you if this poses a difficulty for you.

• We suggest to download the 'WeChat' app before travelling to China to communicate with your guide. WhatsApp, Google, Instagram, Facebook and many other apps and websites do not work in China.

• We recommend having some local currency with you for purchases in rural villages, as not all accept card payments or your card may not work as it does at home.

The final recommendation I would give is to include the fox fairy show and Huanglong cave in itineraries. Both were amazing and unlike anything we had seen before. Also on the coffee piece, Europeans drink a lot of coffee. In Furong there was nowhere in the old or new town to get coffee in the morning. It might be an idea for the guide to have some coffee that they could give to the tourists to make their own.

I hope that has been helpful and thank you again for making this trip one that we will never forget. I'll send the photos in a few days.

We have ended our private tour today with you. Thank you so much for the wonderful arrangement.

All the 3 drivers and guide are very experienced and knowledgeable. We really get a deep understanding of Xi’an, Chengdu and Chongqing.

Feedback as below:

Leo was the fastest to reply. Efficient, patient and very responsive. He is very hard working!

Tour arrangements went smoothly. We appreciate the suggestions and the itinerary.

Definityly! 100% would recommend your service to our people.

The reviews online were exactly what we had experienced. If I were to travel China (Yunnan), I would like move off the beaten tours not major tourist attractions.

Most Important Xian Travel Notes

Our private Xian tour packages let you decide where to go, when to go, where to stay and touring paces on your own. The itinerary, hotels, food, cultural programs are customized to match your requirements. Before the tour, our knowledgeable Xian experts will give reliable suggestions and propose ideal tour package for you. During the tour, our private tour guide will help you learn deep about the history and culture of Xian, and make sure everything work well throughout the tour at the same time.

Xian applies to the 144-Hour Transit Visa Exemption. Visitors from 53 foreign countries who hold valid travel document & connecting flights to a third country/region can enter Xian from Xian Xianyang Airport, and stay in Xian up to 144 hours without a Chinese Visa. But since Xi’an has not many international flights, and the city is usually a middle stop of a China tour, we advise you to apply for a China Tourist Visa (L Visa) before coming to China so that you can travel in a more secure and flexible way. China Discovery can provide you the invitation letter so that you can obtain the visa with bigger chance while least time.

Xi'an has a warm temperate semi-humid continental monsoon climate with distinct four seasons – warm spring, hot and rainy summer, cool and comfortable autumn, cold and dry winter. The average annual temperature of Xi'an is around 13°C / 55°F. Generally speaking, you can visit Xian all year around, as most of the attractions are located in and near city area. But the best two periods of time to visit is March to June and mid-September to early November. During this period, the weather there is neither too hot nor too cold, and the number of tourists is relatively smaller than the summer time’s.

What to wear in summer? - light, quick-dry and easy to wear clothes, hat, sunscreen, rain jacket and comfortable shoes. What to wear in winter? - double layer jacket, long underwear pants and tops, sweaters, long sleeve shirts, wool blend socks, boots, winter jacket, winter hat, winter gloves, winter scarf. What to wear in spring? - long underwear, fleece outer layer, face mask, light hat, scarf, and gloves. What to wear in autumn? - thermal warmer jacket, light hat, gloves, scarf, wool socks, fleece pants.

Xian is only about 2~3 hours flying from majority of big cities in China, such as Beijing, Xian, Chengdu, Guangzhou, Shanghai, etc. You can also take international flights to Xian from more than 50 countries and regions, such as Hong Kong, Macau, Taipei, Los Angeles, London, Paris, Sydney, Kuala, Bangkok, etc. Xian is connected by high-speed rails widely. You can get from Beijing, Chengdu, Chongqing, Luoyang, Zhengzhou, Pingyao, etc. to Xian by bullet trains within 6 hours. Recommended gateways to Xian include: Beijing, Shanghai, Chongqing, Chengdu, Hangzhou, Hong Kong.

Bell & Drum Towers Area - strongly recommended for first-timers, easy access to Ancient City Wall, Muslim Quarter, Bell Tower, Drum Tower and popular restaurants. Hotel rates are higher than other areas, but you have a lot of choices of different standards. Xincheng District - not very far from the city center as well as Xian’s main attractions, recommended for families as there are shopping center and parks to enjoy a stroll. Yanta Distict – Yanta District is on the south of the city center, also near main attractions, including Giant Wild Goose Pagoda, History Museum, etc. It has many hotels of budget class.

China Discovery only uses those hotels with convenient amenities, fine services and great reputations. Most of them are 5-star and 4-star hotels located near the Muslim Quarter (food street), Bell Tower, Ancient City Wall, where you can also get easy accesses to subway, shopping malls, banks, etc.

The city area of Xian can be explored in brief two days, while the surrounding regions also have a lot of places to explore, such as Mount Hua, Longmen Grottoes in Luoyang, Shaolin Temple in Dengfeng. If time allows, you can extend your trip from Xian to above places. Each place only needs about 1 day to visit.
