Horario y dónde ver el Granada Open de World Padel Tour

Vuelve la acción en World Padel Tour después de un inicio de temporada en los que se ha disputado 5 torneos. El circuito se desplaza ahora a Andalucía para jugarse su siguiente prueba, el Granada Open , cuyo cuadro final arranca este martes 11 de abril con los primeros duelos de dieciseisavos.

El torneo de Granada de esta semana contará con varias novedades, en forma de nuevas parejas que se han ido anunciando poco a poco tras la gira sudamericana. Además, Juan Lebrón y Ale Galán causarán baja por lesión . Esta ausencia podría ser aprovechada por Agustín Tapia y Arturo Coello , los grandes protagonistas de este inicio de temporada y líderes destacados de la Race 2023.

En la categoría femenina también debutarán varios binomios, destacando el estreno de Bea González y Delfi Brea , pareja número 3, y de Marta Ortega y Sofía Araújo , pareja 4. Tanto una dupla como otra tratarán de poner freno a las dos primeras cabezas de serie, Gemma Triay – Ale Salazar y Ari Sánchez – Paula Josemaría , que se han repartido hasta ahora los 5 títulos.

Dieciseisavos de final (martes y miércoles).

Los dieciseisavos de final se dividirá en dos jornadas, arrancando el martes 11 de abril. Para la primera jornada World Padel Tour no tendrá streaming .

La retransmisión de Granada Open 2023 comenzará en la segunda jornada de los dieciseisavos de final, que se jugará el miércoles 12 de abril . El streaming comenzará a las 09:30 h en España (04:30 h en Argentina) con 3 partidos femeninos. En el turno vespertino, la jornada seguirá a las 15:30 h en España (10:30 h en Argentina) , con 3 partidos masculinos.

Todos estos partidos los podrás ver en www.worldpadeltourtv.com .

Octavos de final (jueves)

Los octavos de final se jugarán íntegramente el jueves 13 de abril . Al igual que en la jornada anterior, la retransmisión del streaming arrancará a las 09:30 h en España (04:30 h en Argentina) con 3 partidos femeninos. Por la tarde, la jornada continuará a las 15:30 h en España (10:30 h en Argentina) , con 3 partidos masculinos.

Esta jornada se emitirá solamente por www.worldpadeltourtv.com .

Cuartos de final (viernes)

La retransmisión en los cuartos de final se producirá el viernes 14 de abril. Se emitirá en abierto los partidos de chicas por la mañana y el de chicos por las plataformas de pago.

Así, los dos partidos femeninos que se disputen en la pista central se podrán ver en www.worldpadeltourtv.com desde las 09:30 h en España (04:30 h en Argentina) .

En cuanto finalice el segundo partido del cuadro femenino arrancarán los cuartos de final masculinos, con el primer duelo justo a continuación. Sin embargo, el segundo partido no comenzará antes de las 15:30 h en España (10:30 h en Argentina) . Estos partidos se podrán ver exclusivamente por las plataformas de pago .

Semifinales (sábado)

Las semifinales de Granada Open 2023 se disputarán el próximo sábado 15 de abril . La retransmisión comenzará a las 10:00 h en España (05:00 h en Argentina)  con la primera semifinal femenina , que se podrá ver en WorldPadelTourTV . En cuanto termine el partido, tendrá lugar la primera semifinal masculina , que se retransmitirá en las plataformas de pago .

La jornada vespertina continuará a las 16:00 h en España (11:00 h en Argentina) con las otras dos semifinales. La segunda semifinal femenina se verá en WorldPadelTourTV mientras que la segunda semifinal masculina se podrá seguir en las plataformas de pago .

Finales (domingo)

Las finales de Granada Open 2023 se disputarán el domingo 16 de abril . La retransmisión comenzará con la final femenina, que arrancará a las 10:00 h en España (08:00 h en Argentina) en WorldPadelTourTV . Justo cuando finalice el partido se jugará la final masculina, que estará disponible en las plataformas de pago.

Can tennis, pickleball and padel co-exist? The folks in charge of the French Open think so

PARIS (AP) — Amélie Mauresmo removed her black blazer and prepared to get into the swing of things on the grounds of the French Open . Tennis, anyone? Nope, not on this day.

Instead of a racket, Mauresmo — a two-time major champion and former No. 1-ranked tennis player — was holding a paddle Thursday and giving pickleball a whirl for the first time. She was taking part in a demonstration on one of three temporary courts at Roland Garros set up atop a patch of red clay used last week for the Grand Slam event she oversees as tournament director.

Let other folks fret about whether tennis might lose athletes and audiences to pickleball or padel . The people in charge of tennis in France are embracing those other racket-adjacent sports, figuring, essentially: The more, the merrier. The French tennis federation (FFT) officially brought pickleball under its umbrella and is seeking government approval to hold a sanctioned national championship.

“I’m not sure it’s the same crowd that are doing these different sports,” Mauresmo said. “And if you put it in a tennis club, that means people might come to play pickleball, but then they see tennis and it can maybe attract new people.”

About 4 1/2 hours before Iga Swiatek and Coco Gauff met in the French Open women’s semifinals, Mauresmo and Gilles Moretton, the president of the FFT, took part in a hit-and-giggle session at what normally is Court 5, a 263-capacity arena that is among the smallest at Roland Garros. There are tall pines and buildings visible behind one end of the court; the facility’s main stadium, Court Philippe Chatrier, behind the other.

“I didn’t really know what to expect. I haven’t watched pickleball on TV,” Mauresmo said. “You can have fun quite quickly in this sport. The rules are just a little bit different, so you have to adjust, but it doesn’t take very long to do that.”

Fans were encouraged to give pickleball a try as part of a promotional effort similar to what the FFT did two years ago with padel, which joined the federation a decade ago.

“We want people to come and enjoy and do exercise for health. Tennis is a difficult sport, and sometimes you need to enjoy and learn something quickly — and padel or pickleball is much easier for most people,” Moretton said.

Unlike Mauresmo, he’d tried pickleball before.

“You have to get used to the rules — I didn’t know all the rules at the beginning — but then it’s much easier than tennis,” Moretton said. “So I think pickleball is going to be big in France.”

Perhaps. There’s some work to be done, though.

He said there are about 300 pickleball courts in the country, and about 34,000 tennis courts. But Moretton expects that to grow, and quickly, much in the same way tennis and basketball courts are giving way to pickleball setups across the United States.

“Unfortunately, I see that we’re losing some tennis courts to pickleball. They’re putting the pickleball lines on courts instead of putting tennis lines on it. I’m going to stick to tennis and give back to the sport I love and always promote tennis,” said 16-time Grand Slam doubles champion Bob Bryan, who is now the U.S. Davis Cup captain and will be a coach for the country’s tennis players at the Paris Olympics this summer.

“Pickleball is a very social game and it’s easy to play and I think that’s why people are loving it,” Bryan said. “It’s an equalizer — a grandma can play it with her young grandson. and it can be competitive.”

Sofia Kenin , an American who won the 2020 Australian Open, hasn’t tried pickleball yet.

“It’s exciting that there’s a changeup in the game. There’s a lot of girls who used to play tennis and switched to pickleball,” Kenin said. “But I’m good at tennis, so I’ll stick to that.”

A spokesperson for the U.S. Tennis Association said the group that runs the U.S. Open has no plans to partner with pickleball or padel.

“A few years ago, people didn’t know what padel was. They thought it was like this,” Moretton said, pantomiming holding an oar and paddling (Get it? Not “paddle,” but “padel.”)

“Now everybody in France knows padel,” he said. “And very quickly, people will know pickleball.”

Moretton is sure tennis can co-exist with pickleball and padel.

“Nothing is a threat to tennis. Tennis is huge. It’s a special sport, physically, technically and mentally. We are not scared of having padel or pickleball taking over,” he said. “Pickleball will get bigger and bigger, but tennis players will stay tennis players.”

Given how much Mauresmo said she enjoyed her initial taste of pickleball, might she join the circuit and strive to be No. 1 there, the way she was on the tennis tour?

“No,” Mauresmo said with a laugh. “I don’t have time for that.”

What's at stake for Swiatek in Saturday's final?

The three-peat, a fifth major title and more are within Iga's reach in the women's singles final at Roland-Garros 2024

And then there were two… And one of them just happens to be in the process of building a legacy for the ages on the Parisian clay. 

History will be on the line for 23-year-old Iga Swiatek in Saturday’s Roland-Garros final as she seeks to become the first player to win three consecutive women’s singles titles at Roland-Garros since 2007.

Swiatek, who owns a 34-2 lifetime record in Paris, is now 83-10 lifetime on clay – and a scary good 56-4 on her favourite surface since the start of 2022. Even her opponent, Italy’s Jasmine Paolini , is aware of the daunting challenge ahead of her.

“Iga is an unbelievable player,” Paolini said on Thursday after defeating Mirra Andreeva to reach her maiden major final . “So young, but so many achievements – and Grand Slams.”

Three-peat would be neat  

If Swiatek can tackle the Paolini challenge on Saturday, she would become the first player to complete a successful three-peat on the Parisian clay since Justine Henin in 2007. 

The only other woman to win three consecutive titles in Paris was Monica Seles, who achieved the feat between 1990 and 1992. 

If victorious, Swiatek would also move into a tie on the all-time Roland-Garros Open era women’s singles titles list with four.

Make it five? 

If Swiatek can take the title on Saturday she would also become just the third player – male or female – to win the first five Grand Slam finals she contested. 

She would join Roger Federer (7-0) and Monica Seles (6-0) on that lofty list. Swiatek is one of just four players to have won the first four major finals she has played in (Naomi Osaka is the other). 

Five major titles would also make Swiatek the first player born after 1990 to hold as many major titles, and she would move into a tie with Martina Hingis and Maria Sharapova for 11th on the all-time Open era women’s singles Grand Slam titles list. 

Seeing treble

Swiatek is bidding to become the first player in 11 seasons to complete the rare Madrid – Rome – Roland-Garros treble by securing the title at the three most prestigious clay-court titles in the same season. Twenty-three-time Grand Slam champion Serena Williams achieved the feat in 2013. 

Streaks in play 

If Swiatek can reach the pinnacle again in Paris, she would stretch her Roland-Garros winning streak to 21 and take her overall winning streak, which dates back to the start of the Madrid Open, to 19. 

More impressively, Swiatek would stretch her winning streak in WTA finals – a streak that started with her 6-2, 5-7, 6-4 win over Karolina Muchova in last year’s Roland-Garros final – to ten. Swiatek has won 18 of 19 sets across the last nine finals she has played. 

She enters Saturday’s showdown with Paolini carrying a 22-4 overall record in WTA title matches.

Swiatek has dominated the field during most of the clay season (as her 20-1 record on the surface attests), but even when she hasn’t run away from her opponents she has been remarkable. In the Madrid final in May, Swiatek walked the tightrope and survived a coup attempt from Aryna Sabalenka, saving three match points to defeat the world No.2 7-5, 4-6, 7-6(7) in three hours and 11 minutes for her third title of the season. 

With the win Swiatek became the youngest player to reach 20 WTA titles since Caroline Wozniacki in 2012.

The Pole’s back was against the wall again in the second round here in Paris, but she pulled another Houdini act on Court Philippe-Chatrier, saving a match point to survive a stern test from fellow four-time Grand Slam champion Naomi Osaka, 7-6(1), 1-6, 7-5. 

If Swiatek goes on to win the title in Paris, she will become the fourth woman in Open era history to win Roland-Garros after saving a match point during the tournament. Three men have also achieved the feat.

If she wins on Saturday, Swiatek would become the youngest player in Open era history to win four Roland-Garros titles. She is already the fourth player in the Open era to win her first four semi-finals on the Parisian clay after Chris Evert, Steffi Graf and Martina Navratilova .

No other player won their fourth Roland-Garros women's singles title before the age of 25, and only three – Henin, Evert and Graf – won four titles before the age of 26.
