West Ham rediscovered their goalscoring touch as they booked another European tour with a 3-0 win over Danish side Viborg.

The Hammers, without a point or a goal after three matches in the Premier League, ran out comfortable 6-1 winners on aggregate over the two legs of their qualifying play-off to reach the group stages of the Europa Conference League, and now boss David Moyes is targeting another successful European run after the club reached the semi-finals of the Erupa league last season.

"It is a special thing being in Europe and what makes it really special is that you don't get it very often," Moyes said.

"We tried really hard last year and we had a great run in it and now we'll obviously try and do the same in this competition."

The opening goal arrived after 22 minutes when full-back Ben Johnson fed Soucek on the right wing and the Czech midfielder's cross was expertly swept home by Scamacca at the near post.

Viborg almost equalised when former Leeds striker Jay-Roy Grot outstripped Manuel Lanzini and fizzed a shot narrowly wide.

Jakob Bonde, Viborg's goalscorer in east London, then planted a free header straight at Hammers keeper Alphonse Areola.

West Ham were living dangerously before half-time when Areola had to make a double save to deny Grot and Justin Lonwijk, but they doubled their lead six minutes into the second half when Benrahma ran on to Maxwel Cornet's through ball and slotted home.

It was three just after the hour mark when Soucek bundled home the rebound after Thilo Kehrer's header was blocked.

Cornet should have opened his West Ham account moments later when he was teed up by Benrahma but the summer signing from Burnley somehow lifted the ball over an open goal.

Nevertheless, it was a satisfying evening's work for Moyes' side and their fans, who will find out where their second straight European adventure will take them when the draw is made on Friday.

Moyes: 'Being in Europe special; We want another great run'

West Ham boss David Moyes:

"It is a special thing being in Europe and what makes it really special is that you don't get it very often.

"You can sometimes find people who treat it with a bit of disrespect, but I wanted to make sure we treat it with great respect because I want us to try and do well and compete in it. Now we've got another period of European football and playing games in places we've maybe not done before, so we look forward to it.

"The only way you get in Europe is if you do well in your domestic league, so we've done well in our domestic league the last couple of years. That got us in it, and I want to try and do well in it.

Moyes: Scamacca nearing Premier League start

Gianluca Scamacca has thrust himself into contention to kickstart West Ham's Premier League season after another goal in Europe. Scamacca has yet to start a Premier League game but, with West Ham bottom of the table without a point or a goal from their first three matches, he must be in line to start at Aston Villa on Sunday. Moyes told the club website: "I thought Gianluca did a lot of good things. "Again, we can't be expecting too much from him too soon. We need to give him a chance to get ready, but he certainly did a great job for us. "Look, he scored two goals for us in two games, so he's certainly getting a lot closer to being ready to play now."

What's next?

All eyes will be on the Europa Conference League group stage draw, which takes place on Friday at 1.30pm in Istanbul, Turkey.

On the field, the Hammers, who are still looking for their first league win of the season, travel to Aston Villa in the Premier League on Sunday; kick off 2pm.

west ham european tour

West Ham have discovered their opponents for the group stage of the Europa League, which gets underway on September 16.

David Moyes' side will face trips to Croatia, Belgium and Austria as they enter the Europa League group stage for the first time in their history.

The Hammers were placed in Pot Three for the draw and were the final team out of the pot and were drawn into Group H.

From Pot One, West Ham were drawn against Croatian outfit Dinamo Zagreb. Genk of Belgium were the Pot Two opponents for the Hammers and Group H was completed with Rapid Vienna of Austria from Pot Four.

The first Europa League match takes place on September 16, with confirmation of the fixture schedule to be determined shortly.

The Hammers will be keen to win the group and avoid a tricky last-32 clash with one of the third-place Champions League teams after a tweak to the Europa League format this season.

Group H winners will progress straight to the last-16 with the runners-up facing an extra knockout playoff round.

The third-place team in Group H will drop into the new UEFA tournament the Europa Conference League for a play-off match. The fourth-placed team will exit European competition.

West Ham's opponents have more recent experience in European competition than the Hammers with Dinamo Zagreb a vastly experienced Champions League / European Cup side, albeit their best run in the tournament came in 1960-61 when they reached the semi-final stage.

The Croatian side won a domestic double last season but were shocked in the Champions League qualifiers when they lost to Moldovan outfit Sheriff Tiraspol.

Genk were last in the Champions League proper in the 2019-20 season but failed to progress from their group. The Belgian team were defeated 4-2 on aggregate by Shakhtar Donetsk in this season's Champions League third qualifying round.

Billy Horschel to team up with Mr West Ham

Billy Horschel will be returning to St Andrews next month for the 2022 Alfred Dunhill Links Championship, looking for his first win in the event.

GettyImages-1405023856

However just as much focus for him this year is going to be the Team Championship, where he will be partnering former West Ham captain Mark Noble.

Billy is Florida born and bred, but loves football. He is a passionate long distance supporter of West Ham United and an ardent admirer of Noble, who played more than 550 times for the London club over 18 years.

Billy said: “I’m counting down my return to the Alfred Dunhill Links. I love playing in Scotland, it doesn’t get much better than being able to compete on historic Links courses like St Andrews, Carnoustie and of course beautiful Kingsbarns.

“I’ve been a supporter of West Ham for quite some time and over the last couple of years I’ve been lucky enough to befriend Mark Noble and call him one of my best friends. A former captain of the club and a club legend, there’s a reason he earned the title Mr West Ham as he embodies the West Ham spirit! I’m delighted to have Mark as my partner this year and look forward to Mr West Ham leading us to victory.”

Last year Horschel played in the Team Championship with his father Billy Snr, who celebrated his 70th birthday during the event. “Being able to share the experience with my Dad last year, playing together, was unforgettable,” he said.

This year has been a positive one for Horschel, who had one of the biggest wins of his career with victory in the Memorial Tournament in Ohio in June. Last year he also won two other big events, the BMW PGA Championship at Wentworth and the WGC-Dell Matchplay in Austin.

Among other top players in the world-class field are four-time Major champion Rory McIlroy, two-time Alfred Dunhill Links winner Tyrrell Hatton, 2019 Team Championship winner Tommy Fleetwood and 2018 Open champion Francesco Molinari.

West Ham Transfer DealSheet: Julen Lopetegui targeting Brazilians in his first window

West Ham Transfer DealSheet: Julen Lopetegui targeting Brazilians in his first window

It is a fresh start for West Ham United following David Moyes’ departure as manager at the end of last season — there will be great interest in how Julen Lopetegui fares in his first summer as their head coach.

Lopetegui’s appointment means this is the first time in West Ham’s 129-year history they have someone without the title of manager in charge of the men’s first team.

Pursuing transfer targets will be harder for West Ham in this window without European football to offer after three seasons in various UEFA competitions. But internally there is great confidence in what Lopetegui and technical director Tim Steidten can achieve.

Will West Ham sign a striker? Is Lopetegui going to name a new captain? Who do they plan on signing? The Athletic answers some of the important topics surrounding their transfer plans.

What positions are they looking at this summer?

The club are prioritising a centre-back, a right-back and a forward. Defender Nayef Aguerd is expected to leave, while current captain Kurt Zouma faces an uncertain future. Lopetegui needs a new right-back to provide competition for Vladimir Coufal , with Ben Johnson also set to go when his contract expires at the end of the month. Johnson is attracting interest from Rangers in Scotland, Premier League rivals Crystal Palace and leading Championship side Leeds United .

West Ham’s efforts to sign an effective forward have proved largely futile in previous windows, but the club hopes that will change this time. Jarrod Bowen , Danny Ings and Michail Antonio are their current senior forward options.

Which players are they looking at?

Lopetegui wants to make four signings before he even officially starts work on July 1.

Nothing is finalised but there’s a potential five-year deal with Brazilian club Flamengo for centre-back Fabricio Bruno which would see the 28-year-old move to the London Stadium for an initial €13.5million plus €1.5m in add-ons. But there are fears that move could collapse due to late interest from an unnamed Saudi Pro League side, who are prepared to offer a higher salary.

west ham european tour

Bruno is not the only Brazilian in discussions with West Ham. They are in advanced talks to sign Palmeiras forward Luis Guilherme for a fee in the region of £25.5million. The 18-year-old has a year left on his contract, has scored one goal and provided one assist in 45 appearances for the Sao Paulo side.

West Ham are interested in signing Wolverhampton Wanderers captain Maximilian Kilman . Lopetegui worked with the now 27-year-old central defender while manager of Wolves in 2022-23. Last season, West Ham conceded 74 Premier League goals, the fourth-highest behind relegated trio Sheffield United (104), Luton Town (85) and Burnley (78). Other defensive targets include Odilon Kossounou , 23, of German champions Bayer Leverkusen , and 22-year-old Maxime Esteve  of Burnley.

Fulham defender Tosin Adarabioyo rejected a move to West Ham. The 26-year-old centre-back, who is set to join Chelsea on a free transfer, turned down a move to the London Stadium because they are unable to offer European football next season.

West Ham are close to agreeing a deal with goalkeeper Wes Foderingham . The 33-year-old will leave Sheffield United when his contract officially expires at the end of this month and Lopetegui, who played in goal himself for six Spanish clubs including both Real Madrid and arch-rivals Barcelona , wants to sign an experienced third-choice following the release of Joseph Anang , 23.

The club have missed out on signing young forward Aodhan Doherty from Northern Ireland Premiership side Linfield. The 18-year-old was initially on trial at West Ham, but chose to join Championship side Blackburn Rovers instead. Portuguese club Vitoria Guimaraes’ forward Jota Silva is another target. Talks have not reached an advanced stage but the 24-year-old is keen on the move. Last season Silva scored 15 goals and registered seven assists. This calendar year he also made his debut for Portugal and has now earned two caps.

Going back to Brazil, Corinthians forward Wesley Gassova has been targeted to boost West Ham’s forward options, but the asking price of £30million for the 19-year-old is proving prohibitive.

west ham european tour

Who will make the key decisions this summer?

Steidten and Lopetegui will be working together to identify transfer targets. Steidten has travelled to Brazil multiple times to scout promising prospects, while Lopetegui has identified experienced targets such as Kilman and Sevilla forward Youssef En-Nesyri , also 27. West Ham are keen to not let a promising talent from Brazil slip away, having turned down the chance to sign Marcos Leonardo on loan from Santos in January. The 21-year-old has since joined Benfica and adapted seamlessly to European football with seven league goals in 13 appearances.

West Ham have implemented a new strategy with a technical director and a head coach, and there is a desire to get signings done early this summer.

“I’m very close with Tim and we are working towards achieving our aims,” said Lopetegui. “We want to have the best squad possible to be able to have better players to achieve our aims. We will try to put our stamp on the club. I feel that we have a fantastic platform.”

west ham european tour

Who will they be looking to sell?

Aguerd , who joined from France’s Rennes in June 2022, received offers to leave last summer — from a club in the Saudi Pro League and two unnamed European suitors — but informed his representatives he was happy at West Ham. However, a dip in form saw him lose his starting place to Konstantinos Mavropanos and he would like to move on in this window. Zouma could attract interest elsewhere as he enters the final year of his contract. The 29-year-old centre-back struggled with consistency last season.

Southampton want to prioritise making Flynn Downes ‘ season-long loan permanent. The 25-year-old midfielder played a big role in them securing instant promotion back to the Premier League via the play-offs. Downes struggled to force his way into the West Ham team under Moyes but Lopetegui plans on giving him an opportunity to impress in pre-season.

West Ham will listen to offers for Maxwel Cornet . He was a January target for Palace, but a deal could not be agreed. Said Benrahma is also expected to leave this summer. The Algeria international joined Lyon on loan in January, but a permanent move may be thwarted because the French side currently have a transfer ban in place.

west ham european tour

Last season, only three of Ings ’ 20 Premier League appearances were starts, and the 31-year-old had a paltry return of one goal across 30 appearances. The former England striker has been linked with a return to Southampton, where he began his career in their academy, but they are yet to make a direct approach.

Antonio is attracting interest from clubs in MLS and the Saudi Pro League, but Lopetegui wants the 34-year-old forward to stay. His contract expires at the end of next season.

Which players’ contracts are expiring? Who is expected to renew?

Johnson , Anang , Angelo Ogbonna , Divin Mubama  and Keenan-Appiah Forson will leave when their deals expire at the end of June. Johnson and Mubama rejected multiple contract offers from the club as they want more regular game time elsewhere.

As we head into 2024-25, Zouma, Coufal, Antonio, Ings, Lukasz Fabianski and Aaron Cresswell will be entering the final year of their deals.

What do they have to do before June 30?

With several outgoings expected, West Ham need to get most of their transfers done early.

Although Lopetegui hopes to sign as many as four players before July 1, getting two or three done by then is more realistic. In the Spaniard’s first in-house interview, he repeatedly stressed the importance of preparation in pre-season, wanting to build the relationship between the players and embed his style of play.

Similar to last summer, this would be an advantage to West Ham as the additions of Edson Alvarez , Mohammed Kudus , James Ward-Prowse and Mavropanos helped the club make a solid start to the season.

The eventful summer of 2022 saw the arrivals of Gianluca Scamacca , Aguerd, Downes, Alphonse Areola , Cornet, Emerson , Thilo Kehrer and Lucas Paqueta , many of whom arrived late in the window. Most were not involved in West Ham’s pre-season and the club duly got off to a bad start, losing five of their first seven league games.

UEFA Europa Conference League play-off round draw – All You Need To Know

West Ham United will discover our potential UEFA Europa Conference League play-off round opponents on Tuesday afternoon.

The draw will be made at the House of European Football in Nyon, Switzerland, from 1pm BST, with 22 play-off round ties to be drawn, including one involving David Moyes’ Hammers.

Having finished seventh in the Premier League in 2021/22, the Irons will enter the UEFA Europa Conference League (UECL) for the first time and will be the only English club taking part in the tournament at this stage.

The Hammers, of course, went all the way to the UEFA Europa League semi-finals this season, topping a group containing Dinamo Zagreb of Croatia, Rapid Vienna of Austria and Genk of Belgium with a game to spare, knocking out Sevilla of Spain and Olympique Lyonnais of France in the round of 16 and quarter-finals respectively, before ultimately losing to eventual winners Eintracht Frankfurt of Germany in the last four.

Introduced last season, the UECL was won by Roma of Italy last season, when José Mourinho’s side defeated Feyenoord of the Netherlands 1-0 in the final in the Albanian capital Tirana.

What is the UEFA Europa Conference League?

UEFA Europa Conference League

Contested by 177 teams from UEFA’s 54 member associations (Russian clubs are currently excluded from UEFA competitions), three qualifying rounds and one play-off round will see them whittled down to 32 by the group stage.

As in the Europa League, the eight group winners will go through directly to the round of 16, with the eight group runners-up going through to a preliminary knockout round, where they will face a third-place group-stage finisher from the Europa League.

From there, the competition follows a two-legged knockout format all the way to the final, which will be hosted at Slavia Prague’s Sinobo Stadium in the Czech Republic on 7 June next year.

What can you tell us about the play-off round?

As mentioned above, 44 teams will take part in the two-legged play-off round, with the draw being held on Tuesday 2 August 2022 and the two legs being played on Thursdays 18 and 25 August.

The 44 will include 32 third qualifying round winners and seven clubs eliminated from the Europa League third qualifying round, along with five teams who have qualified directly to this stage – West Ham, Villarreal of Spain, Fiorentina of Italy, Cologne of Germany and Nice of France.

The 44 will be split into two ‘Paths’ – ten on the Champions Path and 34 on the Main Path. We are on the Main Path.

The teams are then seeded in accordance with the UEFA club coefficient rankings (CC) and ‘grouped’ before being drawn.

So, who could we be drawn against in the play-off round?

UEFA Europa Conference League

Paide Linnameeskond (EST) v Anderlecht (BEL) Wolfsberger AC (AUT) v Gżira United (MLT) Riga (LVA) v Gil Vicente (POR) AIK (SWE) v KF Shkëndija (MKD) Viborg (DEN) v B36 Tórshavn (FRO)

The third qualifying round will be played over the next two weeks, with second-leg ties involving West Ham’s potential opponents being completed on Tuesday 9 August and Thursday 11 August.

When the play-off round draw is made on Tuesday 2 August, as a seeded club we will be randomly assigned a number between 1-5 and a ball containing our number placed in a bowl alongside the other four. The same will be done with the five unseeded clubs, numbered 6-10.

A ball will be taken from each both and placed in an empty bowl and shuffled. The first ball drawn out will designate the home team for the first leg on Thursday 18 August.

What happens if we win in the play-off round?

Should we win the two-legged play-off round tie, we will join 21 other UECL play-off round winners and ten clubs eliminated from the Europa League play-off round in the group stage.

There, we will face three group-stage opponents home and away.

The UECL will then take a break until the New Year, kicking-off with the preliminary knockout round in February and round of 16 in March.

What are the round dates?

Play-off round 18 & 25 August 2022

Group stage 8 September 2022: Matchday 1 15 September 2022: Matchday 2 6 October 2022: Matchday 3 13 October 2022: Matchday 4 27 October 2022: Matchday 5 3 November 2022: Matchday 6

Should we progress as group winners, we will not play again until March in the round of 16. Should we progress as group runners-up, we will take on a UEFA Europa League third-place group-stage finisher in a preliminary knockout round in February.

Knockout stages 16 & 23 February 2023: Preliminary knockout round 9 & 16 March 2023: Round of 16 13 & 20 April 2023: Quarter-finals 11 & 18 May 2023: Semi-finals 7 June 2023: Final (Sinobo Stadium, Prague, Czech Republic)

MLB Forges Ahead With Global Tour, Aims to Clear European Hurdles

M LB’s international push will take another big step this weekend, one also coinciding with one of the biggest matchups of the entire regular season.

The Mets and Phillies will play a series Saturday and Sunday at London Stadium (above) , home of the Premier League’s West Ham United. The event, part of the ongoing MLB World Tour, is the third set of games in London following Yankees-Red Sox in 2019 and Cubs-Cardinals last year .

The U.K. games also follow those MLB played in South Korea and in Mexico to start this season. But unlike Asia and Latin America, where baseball fandom already is extensive, the league’s efforts to develop the sport in Europe have been more of an uphill climb. Along those lines, prior plans to play next year in Paris have already been canceled . The presence of the large-market Phillies and Mets—and their uber-popular mascots —in London is seen as a big step forward.

“We’ve clearly identified the U.K. as a priority market and an area that we plan to emphasize for international growth,” Chris Marinak, MLB chief operations and strategy officer, told the Associated Press .

Major Star Power

While those games are happening in London, an arguably bigger event is occurring back in New York as the Dodgers visit the Yankees for a three-game weekend series. The slate marks the one meeting this season of two of the league’s most popular teams.

With MLB’s balanced schedule format that began last year, every team now plays every other one during the regular season. But this Los Angeles–New York matchup brings together Shohei Ohtani and Aaron Judge—by many accounts the game’s two most popular figures—for the first time since the Japanese phenom signed a record-setting $700 million free-agent contract with the Dodgers during the offseason. It’s also the Dodgers’ first visit to Yankee Stadium since 2016, when Judge was a late-season rookie call-up.

Media Logistics

Saturday’s Dodgers-Yankees game will be shown nationally in prime time on Fox, forming a baseball doubleheader of sorts with earlier coverage of the first Mets-Phillies game, and horse racing’s Belmont Stakes in between. ESPN will have a similar high-profile grouping the next day with the second MLB game from London, and then the Dodgers and Yankees on Sunday Night Baseball .

“We’re looking forward to a monster weekend,” Andy Jacobson, ESPN producer, told Front Office Sports . “Baseball is absolutely getting center stage this weekend, and we’re really excited to be part of it. For London, a lot of the content we’re developing will really be celebrating baseball and this new international frontier. We leaned big into that in Seoul, and will do so again here.”

Both networks, however, are anxiously awaiting news on star Yankees outfielder Juan Soto, who exited Thursday’s game with forearm tightness and is set to undergo imaging Friday.

For ESPN, meanwhile, there will also be a bit of intranetwork competition as the Sunday prime-time baseball game—to be preceded by a network sit-down interview with Judge—will parallel coverage of Game 2 of the NBA Finals on sister network ABC.

Portugal called up Manchester City midfielder Matheus Nunes for the European Championship to replace the injured Otávio on Monday.

The Portuguese Football Federation said Otávio would not recover for Euro 2024, that starts on June 14, after being injured playing for his Saudi Arabian club Al-Nassr. He is a teammate there of Portugal star Cristiano Ronaldo.

Nunes has 12 caps, though none in a competitive game since the 2022 World Cup 18 months ago.

Portugal coach Roberto Martinez did not pick Nunes during the team’s 10-win run through its qualifying group last year. Nunes also was not a regular starter for Man City coach Pep Guardiola in their English Premier League title season.

Portugal is in Group G at Euro 2024 with the Czech Republic, Georgia and Turkey.
