Indie Rock Road Trip

Indie Rock Road Trip was Weezer's headlining 2023 tour, spanning June through September. Opening acts included Modest Mouse , Future Islands , Spoon , Momma , Joyce Manor , and White Reaper .

The set design for each concert featured a car dashboard-themed set, inspired by the cover artwork for " It's Been So Long ", with a screen showcasing specially made visuals for each song. These videos were created by illustrator Alec Longstreth and SRND Studios, under the direction of brothers Brad and Brian Palmer. [1]

This tour notably featured " Blast Off! " and " I Just Threw Out the Love of My Dreams " in the regular setlist, which were last played at the Weezer Cruise and Weezer Cruise 2 respectively. Each concert also featured a acoustic set where Rivers Cuomo would play a unique song for each venue, including rarely played songs like " O Girlfriend " and " I'm Just Being Honest ".

Indie Rock Roadtrip, the upcoming 30-date tour from Weezer , will hit the road this summer with a cast of bands including Modest Mouse , Future Islands, Spoon , Momma , Joyce Manor , and White Reaper.

With Weezer headlining, two bands will join the lineup each night — with the exception of a stop in Gary, Indiana — from June through September. Modest Mouse will be paired with Momma, Future Islands will be paired with Joyce Manor, and Spoon will be paired with White Reaper.

Weezer is bringing their Indie Rock Road Trip to Philadelphia! Don't miss their Mann Center debut on Tuesday, June 27 with Future Islands and Joyce Manor.

Weezer is an American rock band formed in Los Angeles, CA in 1992, currently consisting of Rivers Cuomo (lead vocals, lead guitar), Patrick Wilson (drums), Brian Bell (rhythm guitar, backing vocals, keyboards), and Scott Shriner (bass, backing vocals).  Weezer has sold 10 million albums in the U.S., and over 35 million records worldwide. Their catalogue has included such megahits as “Buddy Holly,” “Undone (The Sweater Song),” “Say It Ain’t So,” “El Scorcho,” “Hash Pipe,” “Island In The Sun,” “Beverly Hills,” “Pork and Beans,” and more.

Weezer just wrapped up the first leg of their Indie Rock Road Trip tour. Their first 21 shows have been well-received as they traveled from the south of the US through the midwest to the east coast.

The first leg was shared with opening acts like Future Islands, Modest Mouse, and Snail Mail, among others, depending on the night.

Even though the incredibly prolific Rivers Cuomo led the group into releasing four EPs in 2022 (SZNZ: Spring, SZNZ: Summer, SZNZ: Fall, SZNZ: Winter), unlike most artists, this tour has not been heavy with any of those new jams.

Indeed two of the EPs, Spring and Winter , were represented just once this swing: respectively "A Little Bit of Love" in Connecticut and "I Want a Dog" in Ohio. Why the lack of love for these new tunes? They're adorable and a fresh part of their ever growing 2020s canon. There should be mid-tour press conferences so we can ask these pressing questions.

Also, poor Winter . Yes it's the newest, but it has been played way less than any of their other efforts, by a lot. A shame because, unless "Iambic Pentameter" is too unwieldy live, they should use it to show off their chops. They played it on their warm up opening night show in Pomona and other than its debut at the Troubadour in '22, never again.

Perhaps the kids demand it, but a big chunk of the set so far has come from the first two albums ( The Blue Album and Pinkerton ) and The Green Album . This is not that unusual as everyone wants the hits. But Weezer has so many others. Let them see the light of day.

Fortunately "All My Favorite Songs" from 2021's OK Human has made a home in the set. The sweet number about not wanting to go to parties and loving gloomy music is irresistible and quintessential Weezer..

Another masterpiece that could only have come from the beautiful mind of Rivers is "The Greatest Man That Ever Lived" off 2008's Red Album . Complex and ever-changing, this song has got to be a satisfying workout for the band who has been rocking out for over 30 years.

Speaking of creative, what an unusually beautiful and practical set. It literally looks like a dashboard confessional, especially when Rivers climbs the top perch and sings behind the steering wheel. The graphics in the "windshield" are perfect. Designed by Alec Longstreth, an illustrator from New Mexico, the animated backdrop gives the illusion that we are all on a nice long drive and someone has popped in the best Weezer mixtape.

"I was hired to illustrate the poster for Weezer’s Indie Rock Roadtrip summer tour," the artist explains on his website .

"Then Weezer hired me to help create the concert visuals for the stage performances. I illustrated 711 assets and animated 99 loops which were then composited together, animated, and plussed by the incredibly talented team at SRND Studios in Brooklyn, NY under the direction of Brian Palmer and Brad Palmer," he wrote, noting the stage design was based on the fan club single he created for "It's Been So Long."

Speaking of "It's Been So Long"... in a future tour, can there be a segment of the show where Rivers introduces a pair of rarely-played gems like this?

What's the use of being prolific and adventurous in so many ways but when it comes to putting together a setlist, the goal is to be conservative?

Even the most basic fan would enjoy a show that had just a handful of classic Weezer fan faves - "Buddy Holly, "Say It Ain't So," "Island in the Sun," "Across The Sea," plus one of the songs from the Teal covers album. Then fill in the rest of the 15 empty slots with a variety of new and old deep tracks. End it all with "Jonas" and sip from the juice box on the way to the next town. Simple.

It's safe. Weezer fans have remained loyal decades, mostly because Rivers has this uncanny ability to crank out catchy songs year after year after year. This is a band that is clearly giving their all. Their fans appreciate that. So honor the output. The big question is: will "Angels on Vacation" ever be played live?

The Resurgam Music and Arts Festival is Sunday from 11:30 a.m. to 7 p.m. at Ocean Gateway marine terminal and surrounding areas. The list of performers is about 17 miles long and includes Oshima Brothers Band and professional hula hoop and circus artist Nettie Loops.
