Self-guided hike on the Dales Way

A 125 km walk crossing the pennines from ilkley to bowness on windermere..

Welcome to the beautiful Yorkshire Dales , the purest form of English highland landscape, with traditions and scenery which have remained virtually untouched for centuries. Soft rolling hills, lush green valleys, waterfalls, Roman roads, historic churches, an Augustinian abbey and some lovely Real Ale pubs all await you on this week-long walking holiday.

The Dales Way crosses two National Parks, containing some of the best-known walking territory in Britain and some of England’s most scenic landscapes. This tour includes the whole 125 km length of this much-loved long-distance path, established in 1969, which runs right across the Yorkshire Dales National Park to the Lake District .

Much of the trail follows pretty valleys along the Rivers Wharfe, Dee, Rawthey, Lune and Kent. All have numerous beauty spots for shady picnics. The small ravines and rapids and are patrolled by birds such as Berwick swans, kingfishers, dippers and wagtails. Brown trout lurk in their waters.

The Dales Way leads first through the Wharfedale valley, perhaps the prettiest of the Yorkshire Dales. A particular highlight here is the ruined Augustinian Bolton Priory . You follow scenic riverside paths between the charming, cobbled villages of Burnsall , Buckden , Grassington and Kettlewell . Continuing via Hubberholme , you gradually gain height as you make your way upstream to reach the Pennine watershed at Cam Fell (520 m). The way then descends through Dentdale to the old market town of Sedbergh and finally across sheep pastures to Bowness on the shore of Lake Windermere .

Day 1: Arrival in Ilkley, West Yorkshire

Arrival in the pleasant market town of Ilkley, which is just a short train ride from Leeds (30 mins approx.) Public transport routes are available from all major airports (via Leeds). Transfers can also be arranged from Leeds/Bradford Airport and Manchester Airport.

If you arrive early, you can do an optional walk to the Cow & Calf Rocks and Ilkley Moor. Here you can find the ‘White Well’; a tiny Victorian spa (not much bigger than a luxury sized bath) which was popular in the days when people with pneumonia were encouraged to bathe in icy cold waters. If the flag is flying, a small teashop is also open (2.5 hr round trip). If you prefer to relax, then you can have a look around this attractive country town with its range of specialist local family shops and cafes. There is a branch of Betty’s Tea Rooms with delicious cakes and a variety of teas. There is also a small history museum and next to it the All Saints Church, which is built on the site of a Roman fort and contains Anglo-Saxon crosses dating back to the 9 th century.

Overnight: Ilkley.

Day 2: Ilkley to Burnsall

Distance: 21 km | Ascent: 223 m | Descent: 164 m | 4½ hrs approx.

This is a very beautiful walk which follows the River Wharfe upstream from the lowland scenery of Lower Wharfedale to the hilly surroundings of the Dales. The well-preserved remains of Bolton Abbey Augustinian Priory are a highlight on today’s route. From the Priory, you can cross to the other side of the Wharfe either by the bridge or by a long sequence of steppingstones. The route continues through the Duke of Devonshire’s estate and into beautiful Strid Woods.

Thirsty people with an interest in architecture might like to take mile or so detour to the pretty village of Appletreewick, which has an interesting ensemble of local stone houses as well as two nice pubs. Your accommodation for tonight is in the idyllic riverside village of Burnsall. There are a couple of interesting churches including St. Wilfrid’s from the 1400s.

Overnight: Burnsall.

Day 3: Burnsall to Hubberholme/Cray

Distance: 25 km | Ascent: 320 m | Descent: 224 m | 5½ hrs approx.

Today’s route is a mix of upland and lowland walking. You first follow the Wharfe past attractive Linton to the market town of Grassington, with is cobbled streets and teashops. The route then leaves the river and climbs to higher ground, leading across upland fields fringed with drystone walls. Look out for Conistone Pie , a limestone hill feature which looks like a pie! You will enjoy great views over rocky scars, dales and limestone pavements before descending again to the river as you reach the old lead mining village of Kettlewell, with three pretty looking pubs. Re-joining the river, you then thread your way through sheep-filled fields to the even smaller village of Buckden. Here, you can take a rest on the green or maybe have a drink before the final mile into the pretty riverside village of Hubberholme. If you are not staying here, you will be making a 2 km diversion off the official route to Cray, a tiny hamlet over the hill.

Overnight: Hubberholme/Cray.

Day 4: Hubberholme to Cowgill

Distance: 22.5 km | Ascent: 407 m | Descent: 361 m | 5 hrs approx.

Enjoy a hardy breakfast as today is your most challenging walk. The route follows the River Wharfe towards its upper youthful sections, its water spilling off limestone terraces and small waterfalls.

You first pass Hubberholme with its attractive church and torrents. Next, look out for the tiny stone circle at Yockenthwaite. Further along at Beckermonds, you reach the source of the Wharfe from two small becks or streams. Saying goodbye to the infant river here, you climb stiffly up and out of Wharfedale over Cam Fell. The farmland here can be boggy! A steep ascent from Cam houses, the last farm in the Dale, brings you to a broad track and the highest point of the walk at 521m. You then start descending along what was once a Roman road, cutting across the Pennine Way Footpath and down into Dentdale. In clear weather you will enjoy views of the Yorkshire Three Peaks; Penyghent, Whernside and Ingelborough.

You continue down towards Ribblehead through a further moorland section before re-ascending slightly to cross over to Denthead. Here, you are confronted with the magnificent viaduct on the Settle to Carlisle Railway, which almost seems to be a natural part of the surroundings. Another mile of steep descent along the pretty River Dee brings you to Cowgill. This is a pretty and tranquil place. There are occasional cars, but you are more likely to be awoken by the sound of owls, sheep and the babbling river.

Overnight: Cowgill.

Day 5: Cowgill to Sedbergh

Distance: 17.5 km | Ascent: 182 m | Descent: 336 m | 4½ hrs approx.

A very pleasant walking day through the Dentdale valley. You will follow the course of the River Dee, which becomes wider and wilder as you go. A stop in the village of Dent is recommended; a lovely Dales village with a narrow, cobbled main street, white-walled cottages and an ancient village church. There are a couple of welcome tea shops and the George and Dragon pub serves ale crafted by the Dent Brewery only a couple of miles away.

Following the river some more, you ascend over a slight ridge and then down into Garsdale before crossing the river Rawthey and ascending steeply to the small town of Sedbergh at the foot of the steep Howgill Fells. Sedbergh is known as ‘England’s Book Town’ and has an overwhelming number of bookshops – worth knowing if you are out of reading material by this stage of your trip!

Overnight: Sedbergh.

Day 6: Sedbergh to Burneside

Distance: 25 km | Ascent: 272 m | Descent: 347 m | 5½ hrs approx.

Leaving Sedbergh along the River Rawthey, you then turn north to follow the River Lune to Beck Foot. You will pass some more viaducts from the glorious Victorian era of engineering. At Crook of Lune you will discover a beautiful parabolic arch bridge, which is probably 500 years old. The view from it towards the Howgill Fells is a beauty.

The Dales Way then turns westward towards the Lake District, across an undulating landscape of sheep pastures with lovely views of the Howgills. You will reach Black Moss Tarn, a tiny lake tucked into a fold of the meadows, often with swans and geese floating upon it. This is a good spot for a break before descending to cross the River Sprint and then onwards towards the 14 th Century Burneside Hall, a pele tower which was built to protect against Scottish border raiders. You finally arrive in the village of Burneside, dominated by its paper mill on the banks of the River Kent.

Overnight: Burneside.

Day 7: Burneside to Bowness on Windermere

Distance: 16 km | Ascent: 271 m | Descent: 283 m | 4 hrs approx.

After breakfast, you will be transferred back to Burneside to continue your walk.

This morning you follow the attractive River Kent to Staveley. You will pass lots of interesting former mills, some of which have been creatively converted into housing. The millponds still remain and often trout can be seen jumping for fly. Staveley is an attractive village, worth a coffee stop with its interesting bell tower.

The walk then becomes increasingly rural and the scenery more rugged and rocky. On a good day a short diversion up to School Knott will reveal a great Lakeland panorama including the Coniston Fells, Crinkle Crags and Scafell. You finally descend towards Lake Windermere, which remains elusive until you emerge from the woodland above Bowness on Windermere, a pleasant tourist town on the lakeside. Bowness is the most popular visitor destination on Lake Windermere, England’s largest natural lake.

Overnight: Bowness on Windermere.

Day 8: Departure from Bowness

Your arrangement ends after breakfast this morning.

*Walking distances may vary depending on accommodation available.

We had very seamless and wonderful time on our trip. The Wild Rover team did an excellent job, with great customer service, accommodations and support along the way. We had only one snafu that was immediately rectified by the company – again speaking to the customer service. The hike itself was relaxing most of the time, taxing at others and filled with beauty the entire time. Thank you!

You'll alight at Bolton Abbey Station, which is the start of today's walk. The Bolton Abbey River Loop is part of the Dales Way taking you along the River Wharf to Barden Bridge. This fantastic riverside walk through the Bolton Estate is a chance for us to see plenty of wildlife. Look out for a fascinating variety of birds, such as wagtails, oyster catchers, kingfishers, ducks and geese, as well as plenty of wild flowers. During the walk you'll see the river flow through a small gorge and have the chance to explore the Abbey ruins. You return to the hotel by coach and enjoy dinner this evening.

Easy Walk - Duration: approx. 3.5 hours, distance: approx. 7 miles. Terrain: well marked paths, mostly flat. (There is an option to shorten this walk and your tour manager and local guides will provide details if required.)

Along the route you'll pass a number of caves carved from limestone synonymous with this area. They include the famous Victoria Cave, which was discovered by chance in 1837, the year of Queen Victoria's coronation. Archaeological finds from the cave include bones of long extinct animals dating back 130,000 years. The Yorkshire Dales are an idyllic pastoral landscape of green valleys criss-crossed by dry-stone walls marking field boundaries. Picturesque villages and hamlets consisting of little more than a pub and post office abound. Old farmhouses and ‘stone barns’ dot the valley sides. Above the Dales are open rolling moorlands rising to 600m (2000 feet) or more.

Walking the Dales is essentially a valley walk, traversing landscapes which are among those best-loved by the English themselves. Of course, for Yorkshire folk, there is absolutely nothing to compare with Yorkshire scenery, and one has to concede that they have a point. The hamlets and farmsteads of the Yorkshire Dales, with their dry-stone walls and outlying stone barns are, frankly, incomparable. If you walk nowhere else in England, walk here. You won’t regret it!

Discovering the Dales

Yorkshire Dales Private Tour

Explore the Yorkshire Dales National Park and surround yourself with the scenery of “All Creatures Great & Small” on a bespoke tour of Yorkshire. Visit historic castles and ancient abbeys, discover thundering waterfalls and lush green valleys, and marvel at mile-upon-mile of stone walls in the region lovingly referred to as “God’s Own Country”.  Scroll down for our suggested itinerary and some options to consider.

Yorkshire Dales scenic tour

Discover the incredible scenery of the Yorkshire Dales on a private tour of the landscape made famous as the home of James Herriot in “All Creatures Great & Small”.

Explore England’s best-loved countryside in Wharfedale, Wensleydale and Swaledale, visiting quaint market towns and picture-postcard rural villages surrounded by mile-upon-mile of ancient stone walled farmland, and bring history to life with visits to historic castles and ancient abbeys.

How it works:

Let us create your perfect day out with a private tour of Yorkshire – Discovering the Dales.

The ‘suggested itinerary’ offers an outline of a tour that you can enhance by adding some of the ‘options to consider’ to create the perfect bespoke private tour of the Yorkshire Dales.

Suggested itinerary:

Your private tour of the Yorkshire Dales starts with collection from your hotel in York (or wherever you are staying) at 9:00am. You’ll meet your driver-guide, a Yorkshire native born and raised in the area who has years of touring experience and a ton of local knowledge to draw upon.

Heading away from York, you are soon be surrounded by Yorkshire’s famous farmland and countryside. A quick stop in Knaresborough as you head towards the Yorkshire Dales gives a chance to take in the view of the Nidd Gorge and Knaresborough’s beautiful Victorian railway bridge from Knaresborough Castle.

The landscape soon changes as you reach the foothills of the Yorkshire Dales, travelling into Nidderdale, a designated Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty. You’ll then climb up through Nidderdale, with views across the wild moorland scenery as we head to Grassington. The picture-postcard Yorkshire market town of Grassington is famous for its role as “Darrowby” in the most recent adaptation of All Creatures Great & Small .  A visit to Grassington offers you a lovely opportunity to explore its narrow winding streets and famous marketplace, as well as chance for you to perhaps enjoy a cup of tea or coffee in a local café.

Grassington sits in Wharfedale, one of the three main ‘dales’ in the Yorkshire Dales National Park. The route from Grassington takes us alongside the River Wharfe and up above the towns and villages that lie in the bottom of Wharfedale. The rural roads and farm lanes get narrower as we climb up and over the top of Wharfedale and into Wensleydale – the most famous dale in the National Park. Wensleydale has some superb sites to visit and is known for its cheese (Wallace & Gromit’s favourite!), which you can taste on a visit to the Wensleydale Creamery (an optional stop on the private tour).

You can take in the views as you travel through Wensleydale, perhaps stopping at Aysgarth Falls or Bolton Castle. Climbing out of Wensleydale, you can stop at the top of the Buttertubs Pass to enjoy some of the most dramatic scenery in the Yorkshire Dales.

Swaledale is the next valley that we reach and is the deepest and steepest of the dales in the National Park. The hillsides are lined with ancient stone walls, preserved cow-houses and thousands of sheep. In Swaledale you can wander through the isolated town of Muker, enjoy a stop in Reeth and driver through the famous watersplash ford seen in the opening credits of the original All Creatures Great & Small TV series.

A visit to Richmond as you leave the Yorkshire Dales gives you chance to visit the town’s Norman castle and perhaps the option to round off the tour with a pint of Yorkshire beer in a local Richmond pub.

Options to consider:

  • “ The Finest View in England ” – the view from Sutton Bank across the amazing farming countryside of North Yorkshire.
  • Fountains Abbey – Europe’s largest monastic ruin, this UNESCO World Heritage site is truly breath-taking and a great place to spend the morning or late afternoon.
  • Thirsk & the World of James Herriot Museum – Perfect for die-hard fans of All Creatures Great & Small.
  • Middleham Castle – the Royal Castle of the Yorkshire Dales and childhood home of Richard III.
  • Bolton Castle – the well-preserved castle enjoy impressive views across Wensleydale and was where Mary Queen of Scots was imprisoned by Queen Elizabeth I.
  • Aysgarth Falls – thundering ‘stepped’ limestone waterfall, featured in Robin Hood, Prince of Thieves
  • Wensleydale Creamery – taste the local cheese and even enjoy a cheese-making demonstration at this working cheese factory and visitor centre.
  • Hardraw Force – beautiful waterfall walk behind the Green Dragon pub.
  • Wensleydale Railway – take a train (occasionally steam train) along Wensleydale and enjoy the views at a more leisurely pace.

walking tours of yorkshire dales

Visiting the English countryside is one of the most enjoyable parts of any trip to England , and planning a Yorkshire Dales itinerary is a must. From dramatic terrains and historic castles to idyllic villages, spending 2 to 3 days in the Yorkshire Dales will take you on a journey throughout one of England’s most beautiful national parks.

As one of England’s largest National Parks, the Yorkshire Dales is the epitome of classic English Countryside; quaint, historic, picturesque, timeless and waiting to be explored.

Table of Contents

How Many Days in the Yorkshire Dales?

The first step to planning a Yorkshire Dales itinerary is deciding how many days to spend in the Yorkshire Dales. With that being said, you could easily spend a full week in the Yorkshire Dales exploring the extent of the park. However, if you’re short on time, 2-3 days is best.

With 2 days in the Yorkshire Dales, you’ll be able to enjoy more than just one area or town in the park, giving a broader experience in the national park and the chance to stay the night in one of the park’s quaint towns or villages.

If you decide to spend 3 days in the Yorkshire Dales, your extended time and extra day in the park will allow you to explore even further, enjoying other areas, famous landmarks, and enjoying a hike or two.

Beautiful Yorkshire Dales NP

Getting To & Around the Yorkshire Dales

When it comes to getting to and around the Yorkshire Dales, it’s fair to say that driving to/around the park as part of a Yorkshire Dales road trip is the ideal mode of transportation.

By renting a car and driving throughout your time in the park, you’ll have the most flexibility as to where to go, how long to spend in each location, and the option of visiting locations not included on the bus routes throughout the park. You can browse Rentalcars.com to compare prices across major companies.

From larger nearby North Yorkshire cities of Leeds and York , you can reach the Yorkshire Dales in around an hour and from Manchester , around an hour and a half. You can also easily reach the lovely Yorkshire coast from the Dales.

A great option to explore the national parks of northern England is to combine a Yorkshire Dales itinerary with time in the Lake District National Park , England’s largest national park, just 30 minutes away from the Yorkshire Dales.

With that being said, there is a bus service throughout the Yorkshire Dales National Park, connecting the park itself, along with a few cities and towns outside of the park.

Throughout the year, there’s a generous number of active routes, and in the high season between April and October, other routes are added as supplements.

When it comes to accommodation, basing yourself in the town of Skipton or Harrogate are both good options with easy access.

If you don’t want to drive, it is possible to take organised tours from York such as this full-day tour or this private tour.

Driving through the Yorkshire Dales

2 to 3 Days in the Yorkshire Dales Itinerary

From serene, awe-inspiring waterfalls to idyllic villages and delicious food, there’s something for everyone during these 3 days spent in the Yorkshire Dales National Park.

Day 1 – Skipton & Malham

A convenient and ideal start to any trip to the Yorkshire Dales is in the town of Skipton, otherwise known as “the gateway to the Yorkshire Dales”.

Dating back over 1,000 years, Skipton is a town steeped in history and heritage. As an important market town since medieval times, a visit to Skipton has many things to offer, including Skipton Castle and Skipton Market.

Skipton Castle was first built in the 11th century and has since been passed through various notable families, as well as held a major role in many events, including the English Civil War. A visit to Skipton Castle is a great way to learn more about the history of the area, as well as what life was like in Skipton centuries ago.

For an even more comprehensive visit, take part in one of the guided tours that the castle offers. Otherwise, enjoy exploring the castle independently at your own pace. The castle is open every day of the week with various ticket costs depending on the age and size of your group.

After visiting Skipton Castle, make sure to stop by the famed Skipton Market, which is open Monday, Wednesday, Friday and Saturday, every week. Skipton Market has been in operation for over 800 years, and to this day still offers a wide assortment of various local goods, from produce to clothing and antiques.

Skipton Castle

Bolton Abbey Estate

After spending time in the town of Skipton, take a short 10-minute drive to your next stop, Bolton Abbey Estate.

While known as Bolton Abbey due to its location, what you’ll actually be visiting are the remnants of Bolton Priory, an Augustinian monastery established in the 12th century as well as the surrounding areas of the estate.

During your visit, make sure to spend time visiting the centerpiece of the estate, the ruins of Bolton Priory as well as enjoying the pleasant riverside walks in the area running along the River Wharf.

Weather depending, this is also your perfect opportunity to enjoy a scenic picnic surrounded by nature and history!

Malham Cove

From Bolton Abbey, travel around 25 km northwest further into the Yorkshire Dales to one of the park’s most famous land formations, Malham Cove. Malham Cove is a natural limestone cavern formation that’s enticed visitors for centuries due to its impressive geological features and stunning appearance.

Malham Cove was formed around 12,000 years ago during the last ice age and has its current appearance due to the melting of glacier ice, leaving a large hollowed-out, half-domed shaped cliff behind.

Malham Cove is open 24 hours a day and is free for visitors to visit and explore its magnificence.

Near Malham, you can also visit the beautiful Gordale Scar, another beautiful geological formation in a river gorge close to the village.

Malham Cove

Dinner at Lister Arms

There’s no better fitting way to end a day exploring the countryside of the Yorkshire Dales, than by heading to a cosy, local pub to enjoy a comforting, traditional meal and a pint of something local.

A great option is Lister Arms, a top-rated pub and inn in the town of Malham. As this is the last stop of day 1, Malham is also a great area to stay for the night, for its beautiful surroundings and close proximity to where you’ll begin day 2.

Day 2 – Wensleydale & Hawes

Ribblehead viaduct.

Begin your second day in the Yorkshire Dales at one of Yorkshire’s most iconic sights, the Ribblehead Viaduct. Spanning an impressive length of 400 meters and consisting of 24 stone arches, the Ribblehead Viaduct is truly an impressive structure.

The viaduct is located near the village of Ribblehead, between the towns of Settle and Carlisle, and is accessible by both road and railway (Ribblehead Station), depending on your means of transportation.

With such a stunning backdrop and the Ribblehead Viaduct being surrounded by stunning countryside, the surrounding area offers fantastic walking and hiking opportunities. If you’re keen to get out on the trails and enjoy the Yorkshire Dales countryside, this is an ideal opportunity.

If you want to take in some more natural sites, then consider heading over to nearby Ingleton and visit the gorgeous Ingleton Waterfalls, which aren’t far from the viaduct. En route, you can also pass by the Yorkshire Three Peaks of Whernside, Ingleborough and Pen-y-ghent.

Ribblehead Viaduct

Wensleydale Creamery

While the majority of famous English cheeses hail from the south of the country, Yorkshire is the home to one of England’s most well-known and delicious cheeses, Wensleydale. The history of the cheese dates back to a style of cheese originating from a monastery of French Cistercian monks who had settled in northern England in the 13th century.

While the cheese is now made throughout the UK, the Wensleydale Creamery is still the main producer of Wensleydale cheese, as well as the perfect stop on any Yorkshire Dales itinerary.

The Wensleydale Creamery consists of a cheese museum, interactive exhibits, guided tours, and a cheese shop. Visiting the creamery is a must for not just cheese enthusiasts, but also those interested in this key cultural side of the Yorkshire Dales, providing insights into Wensleydale cheese’s history, production, and the chance to sample and purchase a variety of delicious cheeses.

Opening hours of The Wensleydale Creamery are daily from 9:00 AM to 5:00 PM with closure on specific days, so make sure to check the hours in advance before visiting. Ticket costs depend on which exhibits and parts of the creamery you wish to visit.

After spending time learning about Wensleydale Cheese at the Wensleydale Creamery, head to the local village of Hawes to experience traditional Yorkshire charm.

Hawes is a small market town located in the heart of the Yorkshire Dales, renowned for its picturesque landscapes, rolling hills, and traditional stone-built buildings and homes.

Hawes offers a delightful variety of experiences and things to do; from inviting tea rooms, to cozy cafes, and charming traditional pubs, perfect for indulging in a satisfying meal or savoring a cup of tea amidst the rolling green surroundings.

Furthermore, the town boasts a variety of shops that showcase local crafts, souvenirs, and products, providing an ideal opportunity to find unique Yorkshire gifts and treasures. You can also visit the Dales Countryside Museum in Hawes if you want a bit of historic context to your visit.

For an incredible pub meal to round out your day, I highly suggest heading to The White Hart Inn, located on the village’s main street.

The atmosphere is everything that you’d want in a pub in the Yorkshire Dales; cosy, inviting, charming, and connected to the feeling of the countryside. From fish and chips to a hearty steak pie, the recipes are homemade, homecooked, and absolutely delicious.

Beautiful landscape near Hawes

Day 3 – Aysgarth & Castle Bolton

Start your 3rd and final day in the Yorkshire Dales in the quaint countryside hamlet village of Aysgarth, tucked within the Yorkshire Dales National Park. Nestled amidst the idyllic landscapes of the Yorkshire Dales, Aysgarth is a haven of natural beauty and rural Yorkshire charm.

The pinnacle of visiting Aysgarth is undoubtedly the majestic Aysgarth Falls, a spectacular series of waterfalls located within the village of Aysgarth. Prepare to be amazed as you witness the cascading waters tumbling down the limestone steps, creating a stunning appearance.

Aysgarth Falls has three sections: Upper, Middle, and Lower Falls. The Upper Falls are often considered the most popular. With their dramatic display of water tumbling over rocky ledges, but all three falls are worth visiting for their own unique characteristics.

The falls are open 24/7 with free admission, and to learn more about the area, make sure to visit the visitors center (note you have to pay for the car park) for interesting insights into Aysgarth Falls, its geology, and preservation. The area itself also has a wide number of trails worth visiting, with peaceful and serene surroundings.

After spending time at the falls, make sure to spend time in the village of Aysgarth itself. The village feels like it’s stuck in time, from the small stone bridges passing over the River Ure, to the classic pubs and tea rooms waiting to make your acquaintance.

The village also has various shops, from classic souvenir and craft shops to more modern art galleries featuring local artists.

Castle Bolton

After discovering the charming village of Aysgarth and its wondrous waterfalls, head about a 10 minute drive away into the countryside to historic Bolton Castle.

Castle Bolton is a medieval fortress nestled in the rolling hills of the Yorkshire Dales National Park that holds historical and cultural significance as a medieval fortress, giving a deeper insight into the county’s heritage and offering insights into the lives of nobles throughout history.

With a strong association with Mary Queen of Scots and other historic figures, the castle is an off-the-beaten-path spot yet with rich history and outstanding surroundings.

While visiting the castle, you’ll wander through well-preserved chambers and various rooms throughout the castle, explore its enchanting gardens, and immerse yourself in the historic atmosphere in the middle of the green hills of the Yorkshire Dales.

Amazing Experience in the Yorkshire Wolds and Dales, Thanks to Tim Barber

Tim Barber is a human Encyclopedia Britannica on Yorkshire geography, history, geology, culture and anything else you can think of, with the rare ability to share just the right amount of information his guests want to absorb. From sightseeing and photos to analysis of the agricultural practices of 12th century monks, Tim delivers. My expectations were minimal when my wife booked our two days of Wolds and Dales touring, but after only a few hours on Day One I was enthralled - with the stunning country, and with Tim's clear, warm and human narratives about life in the area, from paleolithic times to the 21st century (especially including the James Herriot era...). If you're planning a trip to Yorkshire, you absolutely need to book Tim Barber as your guide.

We literally built our vacation around Tim's availability and it was the best decision we could have made. Every detail was so personal and every minute of our two days flew by! His deep knowledge of the areas (Wolds and Dales) was like taking a crash course in Yorkshire history. Don't know how he worked so many experiences into our time, but we are singing his praises to everyone in Texas who will listen. Thanks, Tim, for ending our dream vacation on a intergalactic note! Can't wait to come back!

Sometimes trips don't go as planned and what makes an outstanding tour company are the ones who do everything right when everything goes wrong. During a 40th wedding anniversary trip to Yorkshire with Tim (LONG in the making) a serious medical issue arose and the pain made continued travel impossible. The 10 day trip turned into 3 days - one of which was spent in local hospitals and clinics. During this time Tim couldn't have been more amazing - doing everything he could to ease the pain (LITERALLY). From a "pork pie" picnic in the clinic waiting room to a drink at a beautiful local pub, we were still able to have a Yorkshire experience despite everything. He drove to Manchester Airport and brought a "Yorkshire Dales" basket of treats including cheeses and cookies to enjoy on the flights back. I would recommend Tim to ANYONE and EVERYONE looking for an exceptional, knowledgeable, personable guide who will treat you like family when you come to visit. Even if you aren't planning on traveling to Yorkshire - you should consider it just to meet Tim. 10 stars.

Our All Creatures tour with Tim was simply wonderful!!! Tim is an absolute gem, he is enthusiastic about the sites and has a ton of knowledge which he shares in the most engaging way. We had such a fun day -- not only did we see all the All Creatures filming sites but once Tim learned of my husband's interest in history, he added on a few more notable stops like Bolton Abby, and brought it to life for us with his extensive knowledge. Tim went that extra mile to make the trip memorable for us, snapping great photos all along the way, giving us a special fruitcake and Wensleydale cheese treat mid-day, and taking us to a fun spot for lunch, all the while pointing out fascinating things about the area's history and the show's background. If you are thinking of doing ANY Yorkshire tours, GRAB this one!! I promise you won't regret it! My husband and I travel quite a bit and this was the best tour we've ever been on, hands down! Thank you, Tim!

We arranged a tour with Tim through the Yorkshire Dales to learn more about the iconic history of the area. As professors, we have provided tours for over thirty years in the Middle East and Europe, and always appreciate expertise and knowledge when we travel. The experience was outstanding. Tim customized our tour for our interests, which was the religious history of the church in this area of England. We visited the ruins of Bolton Abbey and a number of the smaller churches in the villages, including a tour by the vicar of the Methodist church in Grassington. Tim provided an amazing picnic lunch designed for our GF and vegan needs. All in all he provided very personalized care. He knowns all of the best places for views and shared about the geological history of the region as well. This was a first-class tour with an amazing guide who has lived in the dales for over 40 years.

walking tours of yorkshire dales

This review is long overdue as it has been almost a year since our wonderful few days with Tim. We spent 2 and a half days in his warm, knowledgeable and humorous company. This time was the highlight of our 10 day trip in England and Scotland- we both loved York and the many areas of Yorkshire we visited with Tim. He took the time to get to know us, and tailored our adventures to our interests. I cannot recommend Tim highly enough - he felt like family by the end of our time. We hope and his family will come visit New England/Vermont someday!

Yorkshire Pub Walks: Ales & Dales Trail

  • Classic English hill walking with ample opportunities for pub stops in friendly Yorkshire villages
  • Stay in some of the best rustic country inns and manor houses that the Dales have to offer
  • Walk various sections of England's best national trails (including the C2C & Pennine Way)
  • Enjoy a pint of real ale at the remote Tan Hill Inn, the highest pub in mainland UK
  • Grassington, the fabulous village where parts of "All Creatures Great and Small" was filmed

Sample the finest ales that Yorkshire has to offer

After arriving in Grassington, enjoy a wander around the iconic market town that's brimming with charm, history and character. For those arriving a little earlier in the day or those looking for an evening walk, we also provide an optional 8-mile loop walk (that can be shortened) around the Wharfedale region, taking you to the small villages of Linton and Burnsall - both of which have excellent village pubs!

The Devonshire, Grassington

The Devonshire is a classic Yorkshire Inn that has all the charm and character that you would expect from a pub sitting in the middle of Grassington. The Hotel was actually used in the 2020 series of  All   Creatures  Great and Small, a remake of the beloved tv show based upon the “James Herriott” books following a Scottish vet on his move to a sleepy Dales village; Darrowby.

Image copyright of the Black Horse Inn

The Black Horse Hotel was extended in 1990 and now boasts 15 modern en-suite bedrooms, each with their own individuality. Enjoy modern facilities in rooms that were here before Dickens was a boy.

On the first day of walking, you walk stage 2 of the Dales Way where you head up to Coniston Pie with stunning views over the pretty farmland, laid out like a patchwork quilt around you. The first pub stop (or lunch) opportunity would be in Kettlewell as you pass through, with another potential option in Starbotton. Expect some gentle woodland walking, that follows a riverside until you reach Buckden.

Ascent/Descent:  160m/130m

Unfortunately, the White Lion Inn in Cray is no longer operating in 2024 so bookings will operate via Buckden.

The Buck Inn

The Buck Inn has 6 en suite rooms set in a stunning Georgian coaching inn, in the heart of the village of Buckden, amongst the stunning scenery of Upper Wharfedale. The bar area has been decorated in a more contemporary style, whilst exposing and maintaining many of the original features, and has been opened out to form one continuous room, sub-divided into several distinct areas. This offers our guests the options of cosy dining and drinking in the bar area, a comfy seating area for pre or post-meal drinks (or for weary walkers who just need somewhere comfy to rest their legs after a hard walk!) or a more spacious dining experience throughout the rest of the pub.

After enjoying a hearty breakfast, today sees you tackle a section of the Lady Annes Way where you gradually climb out of Buckden/Cray and head towards the lovely village of Askrigg, famed for being a location where the old and new version of "All Creatures Great and Small" was filmed. There is also an opportunity in Askrigg to visit Yorkshire Dales Brewery company's brewery to taste their fantastic real ale first-hand. (If your legs are feeling it today then you could have a bite to eat in the local pub and then jump on a bus to Hawes.)

Leaving Askrigg you walk through lush fields high above the and onward to Hawes. This charming Yorkshire town is the highest market town in England and a lovely place to stop for the evening. If you have time, it is also well worth visiting Wensleydale Creamery, home to the extremely tasty Wensleydale Cheese.

Ascent/Descent:  442m/440m

Pub area at the White Hart Inn Hawes

The White Hart Inn, Hawes is a 16th-century former coaching inn, situated in the ancient market town of Hawes in Upper Wensleydale. Expect delicious food, real ales on tap, and comfortable guest rooms.

herriots

The 300-year old ‘quirky’ Herriot building on the main cobbled street that runs through Hawes comprises of Herriot’s Guest House, Herriot’s Kitchen and The Herriot Gallery, an ideal location to browse local artwork, enjoy fresh home-made produce, and relax and become guests of Glenn & Liz. They offer six en-suite bedrooms, all of which benefit from the expected home comforts. All of their rooms have been refurbished over the last few winters and have new bathrooms throughout.

An included transfer this morning takes you to your accommodation in Keld where you can drop your bags and then start walking along a section of the Pennine way that sees you ascend to the highest Pub in the UK. The Tan Hill Inn sits isolated at 528m (1730ft) above sea level... yet is usually always busy with celebratory walkers and cyclists alike who have managed to make their way up to it.

The Inn itself dates back to the 17th century and you can see this in its simple charm with its exposed beams, wood-burning fireplace and welcoming atmosphere. Ensure you grab a pint of local ale, a spot of lunch, then head back to Keld via Ravenseat farm, the home of the Yorkshire Shepherdess, Amanda Owen, her husband and her 9 kids. She has recently been seen on British Television's "Our Yorkshire Farm" and featured on Ben Fogle's - lives in the wild tv series. At certain times of the year, they offer al-fresco cream teas to walkers passing by!

Ascent/Descent:  355m/375m

keldlodge

A warm welcome awaits you at Keld Lodge. This former shooting lodge is now a comfortable hotel and restaurant. You can enjoy the amazing views from the conservatory dining room, lounge, and many of the bedrooms. They place an emphasis on doing the simple things well.

ButtHouse-Keld

Butt House pride themselves on warmly welcoming walkers after a long day's trekking. They provide drying and laundry facilities, packed lunches, home cooked food, along with a fully licensed bar. All rooms have TVs, hairdryers, tea & coffee making facilities and fabulous views of the area. On the ground floor there is a drying area for boots and coats, a lounge with open fire, dining room, and bar/reception area, where, in the height of the season, you can enjoy a pint of Black Sheep Ale, available on tap.

frith-lodge

Frith Lodge is a   300-year-old Swaledale farmhouse which has been lovingly restored and refurbished. They have 3 doubles and 2 twin bedrooms which are all en-suite, have tea and coffee making facilities include fresh milk and homemade biscuits and each bedroom has FreeSat TV, hairdryer, welcome guide and breathtaking views from every window. Their guest lounge has stunning views and is the perfect place to rest and relax after a day walking.

You have a choice of two routes today. you can take the scenic low route via the wonderful Swaledale Valley, which mostly follows the River all the way to Reeth, passing Gunnerside with its lovely tearooms and pubs.

Alternatively, you can take the official C2C path known as the high route along an old mining track, taking you onto Melbecks Moor, a lovely heather-clad landscape before dropping down past old ruined mining buildings to follow riverside paths into Reeth. If you opt for this route you will not have any options for pub stops along the way.

  • Low-Level Route:  12m/19km, Ascent 330m, Descent 460m
  • High-Level Route:  11m/18km, Ascent 530m, Descent 650m

Panorama60

The charming late Georgian country house has been tastefully upgraded in a traditional style offering individually decorated rooms that complement the character of the country home. It has been operating for over 40 years. The hotel stands majestically on Reeth’s idyllic green, overlooking exceptional views across the moors of Swaledale and Fremington Edge - some of the most breathtaking of the Yorkshire Dales. It is a beautiful location to relax and unwind. We have a private car park at the rear of the hotel for your convenience.

cambridgehouse

The owners extend a warm welcome, and are wholly dedicated to providing a high level of service with a distinctly personal edge. Their 5 bedrooms are all extensively equipped and benefit from breath-taking, south-facing views of the expansive Swaledale countryside.

Head back into Wensleydale on your penultimate walking day, passing through vibrant hay meadows before climbing gently to the lovely open heather moorlands of Apedale. Dropdown through lush fields and pass the ruins of the medieval Castle Bolton before arriving at the wonderful Aysgarth Falls via a cracking pub in Carperby. Aysgarth falls, is a series of three eye-catching waterfalls on the River Ure and is worth spending some time at before heading to your overnight accommodation, enjoying another night in Yorkshire's idyll and country pubs.

Ascent/Descent:  520m/515m

aysgarthfallshotel1

A cosy country hotel with where the team will give you a warm welcome. They have a traditional pub bar and a restaurant serving quality, locally sourced and reasonably priced food.

colmans

A family run B&B offering lovely guest rooms with large comfy beds, fluffy towels and luxury surprise treats! Enjoy a satisfying home-cooked breakfast made from locally sourced produce and amazing views of the surrounding countryside.

Copyright of Stow House

Stow House is a boutique bed and breakfast set in the heart of Aysgarth. The bedrooms are dreamily comfortable and the bathrooms wonderfully indulgent. In the morning enjoy delicious local sausages, bacon and eggs, salmon which has been cured in Bedale (a mere 20 minutes away) and orange juice that's freshly-squeezed in our kitchen every morning.

You have a choice of two walks for your final day of walking - both are equally challenging. The first and recommended option follows Walden Road that passes just below the summit of Buckden Pike into Starbotton. Buckden Pike is famed for the astonishing story during World War 2 when Polish airmen crash-landed and one survivor managed to walk to Cray to signal help. Just down from the summit of Buckden Pike there is a small memorial to them that you can visit. Alternatively, you can opt to take Mark Reid's popular Inn Way route that sees you climb over the Fleensop moor and return to Kettlewell via the Coverdale valley.

At the end of your walk have a celebratory pint in Kettlewell before getting an included taxi to overnight in Grassington.

  • Buckden Pike Route: 12.5m/20km, Ascent 590m, Descent 595m
  • Mark Reid's Inn Way Route:  15m/25km, Ascent 580m, Descent 585m

The Racehorses Hotel is an independently run 18th Century country inn with beautiful views of either the river Wharfe or surrounding hills. The hotel has recently been extensively refurbished, all bedrooms now fully refurbished and have luxurious en-suite facilities, each with colour television and tea and coffee making facilities. There are two comfortable bar rooms and dining areas, both with real fires.

After enjoying one last hearty Yorkshire breakfast, say goodbye to Grassington and proceed with your onward travel plans.

Other Information

We have crafted the “Ales and Dales Trail” in such a way that you will walk the famed sweeping rural landscapes and remote moors of the Yorkshire Dales National Park, whilst also taking you through its many picture-postcard stone-built villages. This gives you ample opportunities to visit a rustic country pub or a cosy tearoom for a hearty lunch, dinner or some "light" refreshments! This moderate-graded self-guided walking tour is perfect for those looking for classic English hill walking with plenty of chances along the way to taste its culinary delights!

Classic Routes | If you’re the active, outdoorsy type, who’s interested in taking on the great routes of the world or looking for a challenge, then our Classic Routes are for you. We’re talking the West Highland Way, Tour Du Mont Blanc and the Passau to Vienna Danube Cycle Path, to name but a few!

Inn to Inn Walking | Walk from place-to-place changing accommodations each night. Generally staying in B&B’s, inns, and guesthouses.

Solo Travellers

Expect a mixture of paths, tracks, and minor roads. Some of the paths can become very muddy and boggy when rain falls, often making progress slower than normal. The Ales and Dales trail is not specifically waymarked but you are walking through sections of England’s national trail networks and you regularly pass through small villages and towns – The paths are remote in sections but are walked regularly by other hikers and locals, with a few short sections being on indistinct paths.

The Ales and Dales trail is a classic inn-to-inn hill walking tour at heart; most of the walks on tour are graded moderate (therefore, the tour collectively is graded as moderate); however, there are a couple of days that are verging on moderate-to-strenuous (please do not underestimate the difficulty of these days). For those that would rather spend some more time in the pubs or tea rooms or those simply looking for a more leisurely day, there are options to either shorten the walks or take public transport on most days - the exception to this is the Aysgarth to Kettlewell routes, there are no shortcuts or public transport on offer. (all shortcuts and public transport options are detailed in our information pack and smartphone app). Below is a breakdown of each day and their   approximate   distance alongside the ascents and descents.

You will stay in a mixture of carefully chosen country inns, manor/guest houses, and/or small hotels. In some cases, due to availability, you may stay in some smaller B&Bs.   Sadly the popular White Lion Inn, in Cray is changing hands in 2024 and we do not know if it will be open next year.

Single Rooms & Solo Walkers

If you require single rooms we would be happy to accommodate you although there is a single room supplement payable, This supplement can be very expensive for solo/single rooms due to the area and nature of the accommodations used on this tour. We welcome solo walkers on this trip although you should, of course, take extra care in the outdoors when walking solo.

Breakfast is included each morning while lunch and dinner are not included so you are free to choose from the available options. The Ales and Dales trail has many options for lunch stops in local tea rooms or pubs that are dotted along the way - details of these are included in your route notes. Dinner is available either at your accommodation or nearby pubs and restaurants.   Please be aware that we recommended booking any evening meals well in advance of the day your are due to visit

Additional Nights

You may wish to take some extra nights along the route, either to rest or for those with plenty of energy to explore some of the other walking opportunities nearby. We recommend extra nights at:

  • Grassington -  Plenty to do in this bustling market town - well worth an extra night at the start or end of your trip.

Other Alternatives:

  • Malham - Perfect for those looking for some extra nights at the start or end of your trip. Malham is well worth a visit, to walk around the iconic Malham Cove where Harry Potter was filmed. Later on in the evening, you can then relax and dine at one of its many lively pubs or restaurants. Malham is not too far from Grassington and we could arrange for this to be included in your tour as a walking day.  We include both walks on our Escape to the Yorkshire Dales tour - so you can follow these on our Macs Adventure app. For more information, talk to your adventure specialist.
  • Hawes  - For a mid-tour stop - Hawes is a good option. It is a pretty market town with plenty of easy-going walking trails. It's also home to the Wensleydale Creamery (famous for Wensleydale cheese!). Please talk to  your adventure specialist to book an extra night here.

Using the Macs Adventure Smartphone App is mandatory for this tour.  Whilst the Ales and Dales is not an official waymarked path, it does follow sections of many national trails including the Dales Way, Pennine Way, Coast to Coast as well as some other known trails such as the Lady Anne Way, Mark Reid's the Inn Way and the Herriot Way. There are some sections where the path underfoot may become indistinct, but we provide comprehensive route notes, maps and GPX tracks through our smartphone app, so you shouldn’t have any problem finding your way.

The best time to walk is from April through to the end of September.  It's also possible to walk in the shoulder months of March and October, however, the weather can be a nuisance and the paths can become extremely boggy due to increased rainfall and shorter daylight hours. Please note that there may also be a baggage transfer supplement as it is out of season for our local supplier.

By Rail   - The nearest train station to Grassington is Skipton. Trains run from London to Skipton (via Leeds) and take approx 4.5-hours or it is also possible to travel from Manchester (3.5 hours). From Skipton, there is a regular local bus service to Grassington that takes around 30 mins. Alternatively for a supplement, we can arrange a taxi transfer for you, from Skipton train station to your accommodation in Grassington. (Costs are approximately £30 one way for 1-4 passengers.

By Car   - It is a 4 hour drive from London to Grassington or a 1.5 hour drive from Manchester.  The Yorkshire Dales is well linked to all major motorways and road networks.  Please let us know if you do plan to drive as we will attempt to arrange parking space for you (please note that this is at the discretion of the hotel and can't be guaranteed).

By Air   - The closest airports are Leeds Bradford or Manchester. From either of these airports, you can take the train via Leeds to Skipton.  From Skipton, there is a regular local  bus service to Grassington that takes around 30 mins. Alternatively for a supplement, we can arrange a taxi transfer for you, from Skipton train station to your accommodation in Grassington. (Costs are approximately £30 one way for 1-4 passengers). For those coming from overseas, you are likely arriving via one of the many London Airports, from here you can catch a train to Skipton as detailed in the "By Rail" section above.

For more information on train times and schedules please visit the  Traveline   or   National Rail   websites.

Your bags will be transferred from your accommodation as per your itinerary and moved onto your next overnight accommodation.

At Macs Adventure we work in partnership with many luggage transfer providers who set a limit on how many bags/suitcases they will transfer per person, and also the weight of the bag/suitcase.  Ninety-nine per cent of the time they will only transfer one bag per person, but the allowed weight ranges from anything between 15 and 20kg per bag, depending on the tour you are taking.  We do not have control over the limits that these providers set. Therefore, it is very important that you read the luggage information specific to your tour before departure. If you do not adhere to these limits there is a great possibility that you will be charged locally both for extra bags or if they are too heavy. This limitation can be a challenge, especially as airlines generally have limits that are higher. However, our luggage providers have reasons for these limits (usually due to the Health and Safety of their employees) which we must respect.

Please be prepared by packing all necessary items, for example, proper rain gear (jacket and pants), sun hat, sunscreen. Your information pack has a detailed equipment list which includes standard walking gear such as good walking boots or shoes, warm and waterproof clothes for the cooler months and lightweight clothing for summer, and a day pack.

On this tour, all your detailed tour information will be digitally delivered and the trail will be followed using our Smartphone App. You will have access to this documentation and how to use the Macs App via “My Account” on our website.

It is a requirement of booking this tour with Macs Adventure that you have suitable travel insurance which covers you for the activity and emergency evacuation and hospital care.

If you are looking to bookend your trip with an extra night at the start or end of your trip then we recommend a day or two in the lovely village of Malham. Malham is not too far from Grassington and is home to the iconic and stunning Malham Cove - we offer some loop walks around it on the Macs Adventure Smartphone App. If you are interested in booking this then please let your adventure specialist know - be aware that some accommodations have 2x night minimum stays at the weekends.

Alternatively, if your looking for a rest day on the trip then the market town of Hawes is the ideal choice - It's a pretty little town with plenty to see and do, including a lively market on a Tuesday. It is also home to the famous Wensleydale Creamery (Wensleydale Cheese).

We cannot guarantee that pubs will always be open when you pass - it's not possible for us to keep track of 50+ pubs with varying schedules that can be seasonal and change on a month-to-month basis. For example, some pubs may only open on certain days of the week and only for a couple of hours a day. Furthermore, pubs in Yorkshire (especially those in small villages or hamlets) are known to close if they are especially quiet in the afternoons or late in the evening - To avoid disappointment, we always recommend calling ahead the day before or the morning to let them know you plan to visit in the afternoon or to simply check they will be open.

We provide all the pub locations and contact details for you on the Macs App and your information pack.
