Hi! I’m Kate.

I teach women how to travel the world safely — and I’m here to help you have the best trip ever.

I quit my job to travel the world alone in 2010. 12 years later, I’ve traveled to 83 countries and all seven continents! Oh, and I never went back to a “real” job.

Whether you need guidance for your first solo trip or you’re a seasoned traveler looking for destination inspiration, you’ve come to the right place!

You’re the most genuine blogger I’ve ever read…I’ve consumed a lot of blogs and travel related content in the past decade but you’re the only one I really trust and can genuinely say puts your readers first.

No one tackles the uncomfortable and difficult subjects like Kate does. I feel like she makes me a more aware and ethical traveler. It’s a complete bonus that reading her is like manifesting that wickedly intelligent, hilarious well-traveled friend we would all love to have.

youtube travel channels

You may have seen our list of the best youtube travel vloggers written by the outstanding Christine of GrrlTraveler . She introduced us to some of the best travel vloggers who have endured through the years. That list of youtube channels features the heavy hitters and best travel vloggesr on YouTube, including Vagabrothers, Mark Weins, Kristen and Siya, Samuel and Audrey and Hey Nadine. So check that out here .

We didn’t want to mess with Christine’s list, but we did want to share more amazing youtube travel channels with you that we check out weekly. Christine had a strict criteria for her choices for the best travel channel like consistent updates, niche, and channels that bring a new spin on the word Travel Show – (She knows what she likes and she has a TV producing background after all).

Table of Contents

Best Travel YouTube Channels

We chose our list of YouTube travel channels in a similar fashion. They are people we watch regularly, they update consistently, and have entertaining videos and personalities and do creative work. These travel YouTubers combined with Christine’s list are the best travel channels on youtube. They make us want to travel and I know they will do the same for you.

Most Inspiring YouTube Travel Channels

These are not in a particular order. Everyone on this list is a great travel channel on YouTube. There is something to suit everyone’s taste.

1. MIKE COREY

Mike is one of the most innovative storytellers in travel on YouTube. With his unique editing, fantastic footage and wild sense of adventure you’ll love watching his videos from around the world. Because of his high production value, Mike is hired a lot for companies and brands to make professional travel videos on their channels. Mike is so charismatic, he is a host on the BBC Travel channel too!

2. Drew Binsky

When we first wrote this list (and Christine wrote hers) Drew Binskey wasn’t even on the radar yet. And now he has exploded to become the most successful youtube travel channel out there. He is on a mission to visit every single country on earth and Drew shares videos that take you off the beaten path. He is always showing you what it is really like to travel to a place and he features locals in interviews showcasing their culture and every day life.

3. ARIENNE PARZEI

Arienne has burst onto the scene in the past year, but we’ve known her for quite some time. Winning the Best in Travel at the Buffer Festival in Toronto (this is considered the Oscars of YouTube Travel) she has gone none stop producing quality videos. Her 8 part video series highlights her climb of Mount Kilimanjaro with World Vision Canada. Her videos are professional quality and she is highly sought after by brands and destinations to produce travel videos.

4. Going Awesome Places

Will of Going Awesome Places covers everything travel. From what travel gear he uses, to giving you inspiration to create your own trips. We love his editing style, use of drones and the feeling of taking you into the destination as you travel along. Will has some great adventures and is a serious adventure traveler but he also has a lot of fun showing travels that everyone can do too!

5. Tourist2Townie

Gareth travels slow and really delves into the destination that he visits. Tourist2Townie travelled extensively in Brazil and became a sensation in Brazil. While visiting a Rio favela, we even saw his logo plastered on the walls of the community. Now that’s fame!

He’s now left South America and is bigger than ever traveling the world and sharing his video series from each country he visits on his exceptional travel channel.

6. Expert Vagabond

Matthew Karsten is the king of adventure travel doing everything from diving with sharks in South Africa (without a cage) to trekking solo across Greenland. If you want inspiration or need some motivation to get your lazy butt off the couch, check out his videos that he’s posted from his years of travelling around the world.

Update: We shared Matt’s video above in 2019 when updating this article and couldn’t believe this moment never went viral. Well guess what? It finally hit the big time and everyone is buzzing about that penguin now. Check it out.

7. Steve Hanisch

Steve is another travel videographer with high production value on his travel channel that is sought after by tourism board and travel brands. He speaks around the world about making travel videos and produces his videos in both English and German. He’s also got a great sense of humour and is an all-around nice guy.

8. Be My Travel Muse

Kristin is one of the top female travel bloggers and is making waves in the travel vlogging world now too! Travel along with your laid back vibe as she goes around the world to places like the Philippines and Mexico to everywhere in between. She does adventure travels and we love how she chats directly to the audience making you feel like a friend.

Maiku runs his own production company and has won several video awards. We always love checking out his videos. He has put together some great video series that keep you hooked on what is coming next. I really like his behind the scenes information and journalist quality videos like the video above showcasing the Toronto restaurant market.

10. David’s Been Here

David Hoffmann has been traveling the world since 2008. We met him in Istanbul and since that time his YouTube Channel that focuses on food and travel has skyrocketed! With videos uploaded nearly every day from 77 countries and over 1,000 destinations, you’ll never run out of things to watch!

11. Getting Stamped

Adam and Hanna are that dreamy couple that you see on commercials showcasing exotic destinations. They were made for starring in their own travel channel. We love going to island destinations with them as they showcase beautiful locales with their drone work and fanstastic cinematography.

12. Vacation Couple

Kristin and Shadi specialize in resort tours and when we book vacations, we check out their travel channel first. Shadi is a graphic artist by trade, so his work is second to none. When you watch their travel videos, you feel like you are watching a Club Med advertisement and will want to book a luxurious getaway right now!

13. Nomadasaurus

Alesha and Jarryd are an Australian adventure couple that have been on the go for since meeting in a hostel in 2008. They’ve recently returned home after a decade of traveling the world and are showcasing their life in a van through fun videos. We love their organic style and sense of adventure in their videos.

14. Christopher Rudder

Chris is a fellow Canuck who shares his love for travel through his cinematic style and very sexy voiceovers. (this is Deb talking here 🙂 I feel like I am watching a full on travel show when watching Chris as he covers everything from adventure to food, culture and city guides.

15. CAILIN O’NEIL

Cailin was one of the first travel bloggers/youtubers we ever discovered. Coming from a film and TV background she puts a lot of information and personality into her videos. Cailin is a fellow Canuck who has a great sense of humour and a talent for storytelling. Coming from a film and tv background, she makes her travel videos feel like a proper documentary-like one of our favourites the Tomatino Festival.

16. Cammy D

Cameron is the son of one of the world’s top travel writers, Heather Greenwood Davis and he is going to be a star. While still in school, he’s been producing travel vlogs about travels that he’s been on with his family. He’s been branching out recently from travel to tackle subjects like racism, the importance of youth voices, and even showing off his talents in video games.

17. Brendan Vanson

Brendan has a great mix of photography tuturials and day vlogging. Mixing his talents for photography and his great sense of humour, he has been able to carve out a unique niche that has attracted a large following. If you love to take pictures of your travels, you’ll love his getting the shots series “Where he explains how he takes his breathtaking images.

18. ThePlanetD

While you are browsing, check out our travel channel on YouTube. We put up new videos every week.

i culdnt find any better travel insights than this , thanks a bunch

wow, thanks for putting this piece of information together

Thank you Dave and Deb for sharing this great article. Me and my wife We love travelling and when we not travelling, we can watch someone else travelling…)

An indeed insightful collection of travel youtube channels one would wish to watch.

Thank you very much theplanetd.com to telling us about inspiring travel channel.

This Guy “Indigo Traveller” is really a worthy mention. Gives us an insight into North Korea

Way late to the game but I’d recommend Indigo Traveller. He puts out lots of great content, goes to a number of less poplar destinations (including NK), and seems like a genuinely awesome guy to boot.

Check out Chasing Everywhere! She travel the world full time and makes videos of unique places she finds. Really beautiful drone footage and great tips and tricks! youtube.com/chasingeverywhere

Thanks for letting us know. We’ll definitely check them out! This post is a year or so old, so it is time to update it for sure. Cheers Deb

Hey there! When/if you update your YouTube adventure travels to watch list, maybe consider QE Adventures (short for Quinn and Ethan Adventures).

These teenage brothers are skilled videographers and editors and personably narrate their family friendly high adventures in a style that makes audiences wish they’d come along. It’s one of the few channels with videos from the teenage travelers’ perspectives.

Our channel is recent but slowly upcoming – we hope to become insipration to others too one day 🙂 https://m.youtube.com/channel/UC8vQHR5Du1dx1LVEoqL_KUQ

Thanks for sharing your channel. I’ll be sure to check it out and all the best to you!

Hi, Dave and Deb.

Have to say a relay wonderful blog 🙂 Something similar what we have started our self, but we are aiming for local travel experience in our small but very beautiful country Lithuania. As I see you haven’t been here. You are very very welcomed here. Although we are small but that does not mean we don’t have anything to show 🙂 Would be super so see your experience of our countr here 🙂

Cheers, Auste and Justas @ TravelingLithuania

Thanks! We’d love to come to Lithuania in the near future.

What is with the popularity contest? This is the same boring list that everyone publishes. I’m so tired of seeing the same people on these lists, two of whom should not be included!

You are more than welcome to add some names. We asked if anyone had someone to add. So put them on the list. These are the people we follow and enjoy. Also, there is another list that Christine wrote for us just before we compiled this one. that we talked about at the beginning of this blog post. (if you read it) And the reason we decided to do a part two. Sorry if you are not on it, I am not familiar with your videos, but I’ll take a look. I don’t know everyone out there. But I try.

Ah, I just went and took a look at your YouTube travel channel and see that you haven’t posted in two years. That would be the reason I hadn’t thought of you. Good luck if you start posting again. PS, I deleted your comment made under the John Doe email address as I see it is from the same IP address as you, (within minutes of each other) and nobody needs to read a second complaint saying the same thing by you under a pseudonym. But I left yours up because I feel that people have a right to their opinion. Cheers!

Great collection, getting entertained and inspired to travel. Thanks

Amazing collection of channels here! I really dig the aggregation and attribution going on. Thanks for sharing these channels with us!

Thanks for the recommendations, I will check these out!

So my channel isn’t quite as robust as many of the ones mentioned here, but it does highlight a part of the world that none of these Youtube channels even go near. Check it out! I’d love to hear your feedback.

Xinjiang | FarWestChina Youtube Channel

Thanks for sharing Josh, I’ll definitely check you out! You should leave your link so everyone can find you!

Thanks For Looking!

I'm David Leiter , the guy behind this website. I'm an American who's been traveling the world full time for 8 years now.

I started this travel blog in 2019 to document my own international trips, share my photos, and help others learn how to travel the world and find some really good spots off the beaten path.

I'm currently based in Bali , Indonesia , where I met my wife Intan, who’s a Bali local. Now she joins me on these wild and crazy adventures too.

Together, we've done some bucket list hikes , climbed active volcanoes , seen exotic wildlife , and visited some spectacular castles , temples , and monuments around the world.

I've worked with and been featured by BBC Travel , NBC News , Time , and other companies.

I haven’t been everywhere, but it’s on my list. I hope this world travel blog can help and inspire you in your own journeys as well!

8 Must-See Viral Travel Videos

We’ve all seen some amazing viral travel videos from YouTube stars and everyday travelers alike. They make us smile and wish we traveled more. Let these videos stoke your travel wanderlust and get you thinking about your next destination.

1. Disneyland Dance by Disneyland Mom

I’ve known Tennille for almost 30 years, so when I saw the video of her dancing to absolutely no music in 32 locations around Disneyland, in front of unsuspecting crowds of onlookers, and possibly scarring her poor children for life (see the indelible eye roll from her son at 00:40), I was not at all surprised.

Tennille has always been a dancer and her husband, Nathan, loves to make videos (like this one of a frozen trampoline that made the news in Minneapolis and around the world).

Thanks to the flawless dancing and the skillful video editing, the video is now going viral and has shown up on news media, as well. Plus, let’s be honest, it’s adorable. Makes you sort of want to get a trampoline so you can try it, doesn’t it?

2. Where the Hell is Matt?

The most epic of all travel dance videos is Where the Hell is Matt? Matt Harding, from Seattle , Washington, gave up his job to travel the world and while doing so, he took dozens of videos of himself dancing in numerous locations around the world. He now has three such videos, but the one I like the best is from 2008.

I love it that he doesn’t care if he looks silly in front of millions of people and that he invited people around him to join in the dance. It’s very inspiring for travelers. Anyone afflicted with wanderlust will fall in love with this video.

3. Move, Learn, Eat

STA Travel sent three men (Rick Mereki, Andrew Lees and Tim White) on a 6-week adventure to 11 countries to make the Move, Learn, Eat videos that feature Andrew lees experiencing and learning about the culture, trying new foods and moving through each, from which a massive amount of footage was blended to make the videos.

The most fitting for Savored Journeys is the video called Eat. It shows so well the excitement and wonder of eating so many different foods, even bugs, in countries where the food is so inspired! Makes me want to go on a journey around the world to eat … oh wait, that’s what we do here at Savored Journey

5. Guy Quits Job to High Five the World

For adventure travelers, this video will get your adrenaline pumping. So many places, people, and epic jumps from bridges!

6. We Call This Home – 3 Years Around the World

This is a great compilation of a trip that lasted 3 years and spanned 60 countries. Super inspirational for everyone who dreams of leaving their home and making the world a home.

7. Pharrell – Happy – Worldwide Compilation

This one is a compilation video of people from many places around the world (23 cities, 17 countries, and all continents except Antarctica) dancing to Pharrell Williams’ song “Happy”. Cuz it’s always fun to watch people being happy.

8. Around the World in 360° Degrees – 3 Year Epic Selfie

This one’s from Alex Chacon who did 600 days around the world with a GoPro on a stick. Check out the most epic selfie ever!

Which is your favorite viral travel video? Are there others that you love that didn’t end up on my list? We love and support all travelers who want to make a difference in the world.

Some of these videos are so beautiful! I wonder what the chances of recreating some of these on my trip to Osaka might be. Of course “Eat” is my favorite!

The only thing I know is that they would take a ton of time and work to produce! Ha. I hope you end up putting one together.

I had never see Where the Hell is Matt. I love his videos. Now back to watching more of this videos. I would also like to add next list should have something from devinsupertramp.

Jennifer, I’ll keep that one in mind for the next post! There are so many great videos out there.

Thanks for sharing a bit of fun entertainment with us all. I haven’t seen any of these before but love love love the Pharrell video. I’ve seen a few videos like this previously and they always make me “happy”. This one is from a retirement village in Christchurch that my friend works at, https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ebD_drWYVaI

Jen, that is priceless! I love it. Thanks for sharing it.

Too bad the Disneyland Mom Dancing doesn’t have music. She actually dances pretty well, it would have been fun to have some sound editing done.

Anda – I’ll suggest that to them! It’s just funny that she’s doing it all without music, but adding a soundtrack for it in editing would be great!

I’ve only watched Where the Hell is Matt before. Bookmarking this to watch later when I get better internet connection on Tuesday! ?

You definitely have to come back and watch! I love how inspiring they all are.

When in doubt, always dance! Especially at Disneyland. That is by far my favorite. Thanks for the awesome compilation!

Bobbi – I’m glad you liked it. It thought it was super cute.

Disney Mom is ok, but viral? I don’t get it. Move is beautifully edited, but honestly for me one great photo would inspire me more than that. Guess I’m too old school!

Penny – sorry you didn’t get as much joy from them as I did. I guess we all have our preferences.

So fun! This is a great list and makes me want to travel ASAP!

Travel vlogs resonate with aspiring adventurers in ways that written content can't. They let the audience identify and connect with travel vloggers, and explore and experience new and exotic places with them.

Are you looking to get started with travel vlogging? We put together a comprehensive beginner's guide on how to start your journey.

Read on to learn about what travel vlogging really is, how to actually get started and find useful tips and tricks on growing your audience. We'll even throw in some travel vlog ideas for beginners!

Not what you were looking for? Explore several other aspects of filmmaking .

Travel vlogging definition

Let's start with the basics! What really is travel vlogging?

Travel vlogs are personal, realistic videos that feature the vlogger exploring new areas or locations. These vlogs or video blogs are then uploaded on video-sharing pages like YouTube, where a wide range of audiences can watch them.

As one of the most consumed video content on the internet, travel videos have a great audience who are ready to live vicariously through their favorite travel vloggers.

These vlogs can also provide helpful travel tips on what places to visit, where to eat and where to stay at.

How to get started with travel vlogging

If the wanderlust has taken over and you're ready to dive in, here's the steps to get started:

1. Set up your channel

First things first, you need to decide where you'll share your travel videos with your audience. YouTube and Vimeo are by far the most popular platforms for sharing video content, with YouTube alone having 122 million active users every day.

Head over to the platform of your choice and create a channel with your own name, a stage name, or something entirely customized.

Take good time to think about how you want to portray yourself, as this is the first step of your online branding journey!

Fill out your channel with a profile picture, contact info and description, and tie it to the rest of your public social media. Personalizing your channel now will give viewers a better chance to connect to you!

2. Get the right equipment

video travel blog

What are the travel vlog essentials to pack? Well, depends on your needs of course!

One thing to always keep in mind is portability. If you pack lightly or go out for a day of exploration, you don't want to be weighed down by a full camera bag with all the extra accessories.

A front-facing camera is great for vlogging too, and a wide enough focal length is a must!

Instead, you need to find what's your best travel vlog camera and top 3 lenses. Bring along a small, durable mic and maybe a gimbal, and you'll have all you need.

For lightweight and durable cameras, you can't really go wrong with a mirrorless . They're very versatile and come with a range of interchangeable lenses, where you can definitely find your favorites! Add a gimbal to minimize camera shake, which can make or break your footage.

If you're very active and always on the go, maybe an action cam or a 360 camera could come in handy too! They fit in your pocket so you can pull them out as needed.

While every vlogger has their own preferences, the Sony ZV-1 is a compact made specifically with beginners in mind. The Sony a6600 is excellent in low-light and comes with great in-body image stabilization. The Fujifilm X-S10 is a bit more advanced but it's great value for its price and it handles great. If you want to learn more about the best vlogging cameras , read on. For those planning international travel vlogs, services like VisaFly can be invaluable in navigating visa requirements and travel documentation efficiently.

3. Create your first travel vlog

It's time! Hop on a plane, train or boat and pack your equipment.

It might make sense for you to define a story arc before you actually start filming. Knowing what events or locations will take the main stage of your vlog can help set the pace and know how much to record. But if you're the type to just go with the flow, that can work as well!

Get filming and put yourself out there. A vlog is meant to be personal. If you want the audience to connect with you, be friendly and open while staying authentic to yourself.

Editing your video is where you'll make sure to give your vlog a consistent flow. You don't need to be an expert to get started, but it might be worth checking out some travel vlog editing courses, like these ones on Skillshare.

Add some upbeat copyright-free music to keep up the energy through the travel adventures and set the right tone. Make sure you include brand promos, like your logo and end with a Call To Action, such as "Please like and subscribe!" It's simple, yet effective.

5. Publish and promote

Over time, as you build up a following, it definitely makes sense to cross-promote new travel videos on all your social media!

You can also reach new viewers by collaborating with other creators while building a network and having fun! Interacting with your fans in the comments and addressing them directly will also

Create thematic playlists that viewers can binge before deciding to subscribe! Grouping all videos from your South Asian road trip makes logical sense and encourages viewers to keep watching.

Growing your audience 101

video travel blog

If you wanna be the next Louis Cole or Matthew Karsten, you'll have to build and grow an engaged audience. Having passion and wanderlust is a necessary first step, but the following tips will help you get better and enter the ranks of polished, professional travel vloggers.

Consistency

You might find it boring to hear this over and over again, but consistency is really a must if you want to make it as a content creator.

Especially in the beginning, you can expect no or marginal gains. You have to keep at it every day to let more and more people discover your channel. Creating genuinely good content will pay off in the long run. If the rise to fame would be easy, a lot more people would be doing it.

Keep learning

The beauty of technology and various online platforms is that anyone can pick up a camera and start vlogging. But make no mistake, there's always more to learn!

With time and experience, you'll find your own vlogging style, get better at recording and editing, and learn what sort of promotion works best for you.

Never be afraid to do your research about your destination either. As a well-informed traveler you won't miss out on any local staples and you're a lot less likely to commit cultural faux pas as well.

Set an upload schedule

... and commit to it! Like in everyday life, no one likes to be let down when promises were made. Aim to upload vlogs 2-3x a week or even daily for rapid growth.

Make sure you don't disappoint your subscribers by disappearing without a warning - but don't be afraid to take a break when you need to either. Clear communication goes a long way.

Shot variety

If you've done your research and scoped out the competition, you'll find that most successful vloggers include more than a few different kinds of shots in their videos.

Keep your audience entertained! Open with a good establishing shot , have proper close-ups of mouthwatering food or stunning decoration or throw in a drone wide shot to show off the sun setting over the cliffs.

Use movement and a range of angles to bring some spice and variety. If you want to learn more, check out our comprehensive camera angles 101 .

Keep your videos short

Or at least don't drag them out to be longer than they need to be. Short and sweet is the way to go, especially if you consider the average adult's attention span.

If you have entertaining content to fill out 20 minutes, great for you! Rules are meant to be broken. However, as a general guideline always ask yourself: would viewers spend the time to watch my whole video, or are there parts I could cut shorter?

Travel vlog types

video travel blog

While it's not necessary to pigeonhole yourself into just one thing, it helps a lot with the narrative thread if you pick a type of travel vlogging to focus on. This will also make it clear for your subscribers what to expect, and in return, they'll likely stay with you on your travel adventures.

Depending on your trip, you might want to focus on solo, family travel or couple travel vlogs. You can even involve the locals! Whether you focus on down-to-earth road trips, travel tips or culinary gems, lean into your style and make it your own. It will help you stand out in the vast content type options.

Your tone of voice can also vary depending on your style. Do you want to be entertaining, informational or educational? Find your brand and stick to it to build a loyal following.

Best travel vloggers

If you're in need of inspiration, learning from the best travel vloggers on YouTube seems like a great idea!

You can't go wrong starting with creators like Fun for Louis , Ben Brown or Fearless & Far .

Shocking videos show Air Canada Boeing jet leave Toronto airport spitting flames

Latest Videos

In multiple jaw-dropping videos shared on social media this week, a Paris-bound Air Canada flight is shown spitting flames as it returned to Pearson Airport after experiencing engine issues .

The videos, which were captured from multiple angles around the travel hub, show sparks flickering underneath the aircraft. The Boeing 777-200LR (twin-jet), was performing flight AC872 to Paris Charles de Gaulle Airport and took off on Wednesday at 8:46 p.m.

According to a reconstruction video posted by aviation YouTube channel, You can see ATC , air traffic controllers reportedly informed the flight's pilot of the issue, after another plane spotted flames coming from the aircraft.

"Air Canada 872, you got a lot of fire…I'm not sure where it's coming from," air traffic control said. "Air Canada 872, looks like the number two engine, sir. Just let me know what you need to do."

In response, the pilot of the aircraft declares PAN-PAN , a term used in radiotelephone communications to signify that there is an urgency on board a boat, ship, aircraft, or other vehicle.

The term is most often used when there is a state of urgency but not in cases when there is an immediate danger to a person's life.

"PAN-PAN, PAN-PAN, PAN-PAN, Air Canada 872, we’ve had to reduce engine power on the right hand side," the pilot says.

Despite experiencing the alarming issues, the aircraft landed back at Pearson Airport without further incident. Fire emergency vehicles met the aircraft on the runway, and despite there being 389 passengers onboard, no injuries were reported.

In a statement shared to X (formerly Twitter) on Friday, Air Canada confirmed that the flight returned to Toronto shortly after departure due to an "engine issue that was determined to be a compressor stall."

The airline also acknowledged the videos posted to social media that showed the aircraft spitting flames.

"This can be caused by various factors, but the result is the flow of air through the engine is disrupted causing fuel to ignite further down the engine, which is why flames are visible in the video. It is not the engine itself on fire," the airline clarified.

Update on flight AC872 from June 5: pic.twitter.com/lkruMaM7KH — Air Canada (@AirCanada) June 7, 2024

"Our pilots are highly skilled professionals well trained to safely manage such incidents and in this case the situation was quickly stabilized as per our standard procedures and the aircraft landed normally."

Following the incident, the aircraft was taken out of service for thorough evaluation, and affected passengers were rescheduled on a flight that took off early Thursday morning.

26 Vacation Horror Stories That'll Definitely Make You Break A Sweat

"My girlfriend and I needed therapy when we got home."

Hannah Dobrogosz

BuzzFeed Staff

Reddit user u/ujin- asked the community: "What was the scariest moment you've had on vacation?" The thread quickly filled with tales of travels gone very, very wrong. Here's what people shared:

1. "on our way to the new orleans airport at like 4:00 a.m., the vehicle next to us on the highway shot at us for no reason. the bullet went through the windshield and rearview mirror, lodging in the roof right between me and my wife's heads.".

— u/Guerilla555

2. "My uncle decided to mess around on a trail in Yellowstone near some hot pools. He was walking backward on the trail and FELL OFF right onto the crust near the hot pools. By sheer luck, he didn't fall through. It was horrifying. I thought we were witnessing a man die."

— u/alizabs91

3. "On a three-week tour of Thailand with my Muay Thai instructors, we happened to be in Krabi during December 2004. We took an early boat ride for about two hours to a little uninhabited island called Bamboo Island to snorkel and hang out on the beach. We noticed a weird feeling in the water, like something was stinging, and got out after a while. Then we noticed, 'Wow, that is a bizarre loud wave coming in.' Our next thought was, 'Wow, that big wave just keeps coming. I wonder if that's related to how all the water receded a few minutes ago, making the shoreline a thousand feet wider?' Then we climbed the highest point on the island and sat there for about 12 hours, watching the next two tsunami waves come in and leave, all while wondering if the highest point would be high enough to avoid the water."

"The pre-smartphone days were rough; we had no idea what was happening. After being rescued by the Thai Coast Guard and getting back to the mainland 12-15 hours later, we found out that thousands of people died. It was a shock. Overall, it was the scariest vacation moment I've had and the scariest day of my life."

— u/Azagsloth

4. "I was snorkeling with my wife and son. My wife was free-swimming, so she went ahead of us while my son and I gently paddled over to the main snorkeling area. She was probably about 50 yards away, and everyone else in the area was about 30 yards away. I was swimming and suddenly felt something start pushing me into the water. I recovered and realized my son, who's 17 and bigger than I am, was holding onto me. He took water into his snorkel and started panicking, so he grabbed me. I was trying to tread water, hold up another full-grown man, and figure out how I was supposed to get somewhere safe where we could stand or get to shore."

"I started dipping in and out of the water because my arms and legs started getting tired, and I was treading for my son's life. Finally, I got the other snorkelers' attention and called for help, and a group of them came over. Someone with a paddleboard got my son, and then I floated and paddled as much as possible while a dude there pulled me toward a boat. I almost passed out from exhaustion when I got on the little boat. I legitimately thought both my son and I were goners. The thing is, we're both good swimmers. If he hadn't been panicking, he could have swam to shore, which wasn't far away, or expelled the water from his snorkel and continued swimming. And since he was pulling me down, I was panicking and not thinking straight enough to tell him what to do. It was one of the scariest experiences of my life."

5. "We lost my baby brother at Seaside Heights Boardwalk. My family went wild for about an hour. We finally found him sitting outside a saloon surrounded by bikers and their chicks. He had a bowl of popcorn and a tall soda. They were all facing the boardwalk and watching people go by, waiting to see if he recognized anyone looking for him."

— u/Rosanna44

6. "When I was 12, my dad took me to the Grand Canyon. He had bad arthritis and couldn't walk well, so I asked if he wanted to walk down a trail. He said he'd stay put, but I could go. I walked down the trail, like a switchback, only a little ways. Then I turned to see if I could see my dad and was waving to try to get his attention. I kept waving and backing up and waving, then turned, and my back heel was right at the edge of the Grand Canyon. I was not the smartest kid."

— u/DueEntertainer0

7. "I was on an overnight bus from Delhi to Dharmsala. (I am female and was 26 at the time). We stopped at a gas station at night to use a restroom. I was the last in line, and when I came out, the bus was taking off and headed back onto the highway. I sprinted after it, repeatedly screaming, 'No!' at the top of my lungs. Someone must have heard or seen me, and the bus stopped. I truly do not know what I would have done had I been left behind."

8. "we were on our honeymoon and flying into the toronto airport. we were about to land to make a connecting flight overseas when we heard grinding under the plane. this repeated a couple of times, and then the pilot, calm as can be, clicked on the intercom and said, 'we seem to be having a little trouble with the landing gear. everyone, please take your seats and buckle your seatbelts. we're going to delay our approach. please bear with us.' one of the flight attendants rushed towards the cockpit. the seatbelt light went on, and i looked at my husband, who hates to fly. he just gave me a look of pure dread and terror, not saying a word. i knew this trip was my idea, so this was all my fault.".

"There was more grinding, and the plane tilted as we started to circle. The pilot returned to the intercom and said, 'All flight attendants to their seats, please.' More grinding. Then, the pilot said, 'Everyone, we have the landing gear down and engaged. We will be landing shortly. Thank you for your patience.' The whole plane cheered when we landed."

9. "My in-law's family overloaded a golf cart shuttle, and as it was climbing a hill, it tipped, falling 10 or so feet down the embankment. My father-in-law was underneath it with his mother and two other people, including the 20-year-old driver, still in the cart. If it weren't for him holding it up, his 70-year-old mother would have been crushed as well, and the cart would have continued falling into the lake 20-30 feet below. He had some nasty bruises, but everyone was okay overall."

— u/Conquistador-Hanor

10. "We were tent camping in a state park, and a large tree limb fell in the middle of the night in the campsite next to ours. It fell directly across where a tent would go if we had picked that site, which we almost did. It scared the living crap out of us when we heard the 'boom' sound that woke us up at 3:00 a.m."

— u/cofclabman

11. "It was the last day of our trip to San Diego, and my friend and I called an Uber for brunch. A car pulled up that didn't match the app description at all. The car was the wrong model and had the wrong license plate . The driver yelled my name, acting super casual like, 'It's your Uber! Come on in!' My phone rang, and it was the actual Uber driver I requested. He was confused about why I hadn't gotten in the car yet. I tell him I didn't see his car, and he says, 'Uber hasn't updated my car model or license plate yet,' but the person in the car clearly wasn't even on the phone! He was looking straight at me!"

"I told the person on the phone I was canceling, and the next thing I know, the driver in the car yelled at me through the window to get in. He even got out of the car at this point. My friend and I ran back into the hotel lobby. We explained the situation to the front desk, and thankfully, the staff jumped into action. We also reported it to Uber. I am grateful we were close enough to the hotel to run away. If we weren't, I don't know what would have happened."

— u/Moon2078

12. "I was 13 on vacation overseas with my mom. We woke up at 5:00 a.m. due to jet lag, and the morning was beautiful, so we decided to go for a swim. We are used to a very calm sea (technically, a bay), so we didn't think swimming was a big deal when there were no lifeguards. As a result, we got caught in a rip current without knowing what it was. My mom was a very weak swimmer, so she told me to swim to the shore and call for help. But the shore was empty, so I knew she just wanted me to leave her and save myself. I grabbed her by the hand and swam as hard as I could. Luckily, we were close to the shore, and my desperate 'sprint' got us to a place where we could stand. We returned to our room and felt incredibly sleepy, so we went to sleep and woke up 10 hours later. When we looked out the hotel window, we noticed the red flags on the beach, and no one was swimming."

13. "It was the mid-'70s, and we were in Casper, Wyoming, on a family vacation. I was about 12 years old. My dad had a bad habit of driving until it was dark before trying to find a hotel for the night. This put us in some very shady hotels over the years. This particular night, the hotel was an old, two-story brick building that looked more like a jail than a hotel. There was one bathroom on each floor. When my dad asked for a room for two adults and four children, the clerk laughed. We were put in a room with one bed and given an extra mattress to throw on the floor. About halfway through the night, a commotion woke us all up. We heard people shouting and furniture banging around. Then there were three gunshots followed by silence and then the sound of footsteps running down the hallway and out the door. I've never seen my parents pack a car faster in all of my life."

14. "My appendix ruptured while on vacation in England. Full perforation. I was on a school trip, and my classmates had to continue their trip, so I was left behind. It happened on my second day in England, and I spent 13 days alone in the hospital before getting out. Then, I had two days left before I flew home. I was puking my guts out and crapping my brains out. Tubes down my throat, oxygen in my nose, catheter down my pipe. I was 15, and my parents didn’t have passports, so I had to handle it myself. I had one amazing nurse (we are still friends with to this day, 19 years later), and that alone made the whole ordeal worthwhile."

15. "Remember that 2018 Hawaii Ballistic Missile false alarm? That. I was visiting my brother and sister-in-law, and my girlfriend and I thought we were going to die. We called our loved ones to say goodbye and cried in the closet, taking shelter, waiting for our imminent doom. The funny thing is we were supposed to have left days prior, but I decided we should stay an extra three days since the seven-day flight round trip ticket was the same as the 10-day one. It took 45 minutes or so for the correction to go out. Everyone in public looked like they went on with their day just fine. We remained shell-shocked the whole day, and my girlfriend and I needed therapy when we got home."

16. "i went vacationing in mexico with my family when i was 9. i lost my parents in a marketplace in cancun and tried to tell a guy i was trying to find my family. he told me he'd find me a new one mere moments before my father arrived.".

17. "I got food poisoning while in Japan . I was with a tour group on a bus with no bathroom when the diarrhea struck. I had to wait until we arrived at our stop, which was five agonizing minutes away. When we finally got out, I had to scramble to find a store that A) had a bathroom and B) wasn't busy to avoid the embarrassment of crapping my brains out. And it's not like anyone spoke English, which made it harder. It took 10 minutes of me searching, all while holding in impending diarrhea before I finally found one. 10 minutes is an eternity when you're holding in liquid poop. I was drenched in sweat from the effort of holding it in and the fear that I might crap myself in public, in a foreign country."

18. "I got bitten on the neck by a cheeky monkey in a park in Vietnam. I did not have a rabies vaccination and had to rush to the nearest hospital to get the shot. It was scary as hell. I was traveling solo."

19. "I arrived at the airport in my long-distance girlfriend's country. I was traveling alone , and she was coming to pick me up. As I was leaving the airport, people aggressively tried to offer me rides (cabs, Uber, unlicensed, etc.), which I obviously declined. Then, one guy called out to me by name and said he was sent to pick me up. I called my girlfriend to ask about it. She freaked out and told me to return to the airport immediately until she arrived to get me. So, I guess I almost got kidnapped or something? I have no logical explanation as to how they knew my name."

20. "We were on our way back from a small trip. My mom had texted that my kiddo was sick, so we were doing our best to get home fast. It was about a three-hour drive on all back roads with few places to pass. We got stuck behind two semis. My partner kept insisting I go past them, but something told me not to. He pushed it for about five minutes, but I just would not. Something in me said no. Suddenly, the first semi stopped to turn, and the semi behind it had to slam the brakes and swerve to stop in time. You could see the smoke coming off the tires. If I had tried to pass, we would have been hit. I fully believe we would have died. It was a silent ride home."

21. "While studying abroad in New Zealand, I took a solo trip to the South Island. I was supposed to go with a few friends, but they canceled at the last minute. This was my first solo trip ever, and I booked a few hostels along the way. There was a French man who I immediately noticed upon arriving at my hostel in Queenstown. I remember him saying something odd to me. Then, after a day at the hostel, he moved into my room. He then spent an entire afternoon in the room staring at me while I watched YouTube in my bed. Later, when I went to grab dinner in town, I spotted him off in the distance as if he had followed me."

"Later that night, when I finished showering, he was waiting in the room and again wouldn't stop staring. I told him off and had a worker at the hostel change me to a private room. I gathered my stuff and booked it out of there the next day. I was 20, and it was my first solo travel experience. It sucked."

22. "I was in one of the ruined temples of Cambodia and got lost from my group, and I ended up in a restricted section by mistake. I photographed a dead end with roots coming down the wall. Looking at the photo later, I noticed an infamously venomous snake in the corner, staring at me in a defensive position."

23. "Driving in Maui, I noticed a dump truck headed toward me, getting closer and closer to the lane line. I kept watch, and we passed each other with no incident. I looked in my rearview 10 seconds later, and it collided head-on with a car behind me in our lane."

— u/jwangy84

24. "I was about 11 years old while on vacation at the beach with my family. I was swimming in the ocean and got stuck in a rip current, which pulled me decently far out from the shore. My father came out to save me. As we were both succumbing to exhaustion and starting to drown, someone on a surfboard floated over and had us hold onto the board until lifeguards made it out to us. As we were catching our breath on the shore, we looked around for the surfboard person, but they were nowhere to be found."

25. "I got sun poisoning as a kid, became delirious, slept walk (which I have no history of doing), opened the hotel doorway, and knocked on what I thought was my parent's bedroom. A guy answered and told me I had the wrong room. Luckily, I somehow found my way back to my room, went to the bathroom, and went to bed. I remember it all, so I don't know if it was sleepwalking or only happened as a result of my sun poisoning. Who knows. It's terrifying to think about what could've happened, especially as a kid."

— u/AlternativeGreen6400

26. And: "I was 7 years old on my first European trip, and we were in Brussels. My dad and I were waiting for the subway, and when it arrived, it was crowded, so my dad decided not to get in, but I decided I could get in between people, given my small size. I remember turning around to realize my dad was not on the train with me, and the doors closed as he reached to pull me out. Panic. Tears. My dad yelled at me, 'Get off in the next station.' That brief ride to the next station was the longest wait of my life. Luckily, a man saw the whole situation and got off the train with me, and we both sat on a bench waiting for the next train, not even being able to speak the same language. My dad finally arrived on the next train, but that was a horrible and traumatic experience. Thank god for good samaritans; it could have been awful."
