So in that case, it will not be so wrong if we say Charaideo is the birthplace of Assam state.

rangghor- places to visit in upper assam

The house of color. The word ‘color’ here doesn’t mean about the component that you can touch or see.

It’s all about the feeling and the joy that Rang Ghar consist of.

Do you know my friend; Rang Ghar has the dignity of being the first human-made pavilion of Asia.

This is really a proud source for all our people of Assam.

In the mid of 18 th century (around 1744-51) it was built by Swargadeo Pramatta Singha.

But before him his father Swargadeo Rudra Singha also built a form of it but his construction was not very high standard and built only with bamboo and wood.

Over time it was destroyed and rebuilt by son Pramatta Singha.

The Rang Ghar we have seen today is the form built by Pramatta Singha.

During the Ahom era, it was used to organize different programs like Bihu dance , Buffalo fight, Bulbul birds fight, Chickens fight, Human wrestling and many more different activities.

If you live in Assam and still haven’t visited this awesome place then we recommend you, visit soon.

It is situated in the very middle of Sivasagar town.

We believe, Rang Ghar will fill your mind full with happiness. Ok, now let’s go to our 3 rd destination.

Talatal Ghar - places to visit in upper assam

As well as it is one of the most beautiful historical signs of Assam history, it is also the most mysterious one.

Do you know once there were two roadways in the very bottom of Talatal Ghar?

One roadway reached Kareng Ghar, which is 16 km away and another reached to Dikhow River, situated 7 km away from it.

However, today these two ways are closed due to visitor’s security reason.

Once Talatal Ghar was the security base of the Ahom kingdom, therefore it was built very mysteriously.

In 1698, Swargadeo Rudra Singha started the early construction and ended during the ruling period of his fourth son Rajeswar Singha.

Talatal Ghar is situated nearby Rang Ghar, the western side of Sivasagar town.

 Sivasagar Shivadol

The grandest Shiva temple in India, The Sivasagar Shiva temple is located on the bank of Sivasagar Borpukhuri.

The queen of Swargadeo Siva Singha; Bor Roja Ambika built this amazing temple in 1734 by dedicating to Hindu god ‘Shiva’.

Do you know what are the main significances of this Shiva temple?

So, here are they: –

  • This is the tallest Shiva temple in India, which tip was designed with 8 ft. pure gold pot. [This is insanely amazing]
  • This is a little bit shocking but did you know this temple is not made with concert (cement) as the present day. Instead, concert- Duck eggs, and Bora rice were used here to build it.
  • At this place, India’s largest Shivratri festival is celebrated each year.

Borhill - places to visit in assam

7 Places to Visit in Assam, India

  • Author david
  • Date October 23rd, 2019

Located along the Brahmaputra and Barak River valleys in northeast India is the state of Assam. Known for its wide range of environments, it’s no surprise that many of the top places to visit in Assam are characterized by their natural beauty. Assam’s tropical forests, grasslands, deciduous forests, wetlands, and bamboo orchards are just part of what makes this state so special.

upper assam places to visit

With a rich history that encompasses the Ahom Kingdom, and countless historical sites, Assam is rife with incredible historical and cultural sites. And its urban areas offer both a look into modern Indian life and a glimpse into its traditional past. There, you’ll find mouthwatering yet subtly-flavored cuisine as well as fiery foods bursting with tantalizing flavors. Assam may not receive the glory that other parts of India do, but it’s an absolute treasure trove for travelers. These are the 7 places to visit in Assam, India.

With a long and storied history that dates at least as far back as 400 CE, the city of Guwahati has long been one of the top places to visit in Assam. This city along the Brahmaputra River is the largest city in northeast India. It’s also the best point of entry into the region. Guwahati is peppered with many Hindu temples, earning it the nickname “the City of Temples.” Two of the best places to visit in Assam to learn about the Hindu religion are Ganesh Temple Latasil  and the 18 th -century Nine Planets Temple.

For standard Indian fare, try the puchka, sweet parathas with aloo ki sabzi, and chole bhature at Fancy Bazaar. But if you’re after authentic Assamese cuisine, you can’t beat the Upper Assamese Mughlai Thali at Michinga Ethnic Cuisine. The mutton, paneer kofta, and eggplant are all winners!

Another fantastic thali is Paradise Restaurant’s Parampara Thali, which includes an exotic and bony pigeon with sesame curry, a divine teamed fish with mustard sauce, and fried eggplant.

Manas National Park

upper assam places to visit

If you head three hours north of Guwahati, you’ll find Manas National Park. This 366.8-square-mile tiger reserve, elephant reserve, and UNESCO World Heritage Site is located in the Himalayan foothills. It’s one of the best places to visit in Assam for animal lovers. The park is home to Asian elephants, tigers, rhinos, water buffalo, clouded leopards, deer, and much more, so be sure to check it out!

upper assam places to visit

The best time to visit the park is between November and April. I recommend staying at least two full days so you can get the most out of your visit. Two days will get you four three-hour game drives: one each morning and one each afternoon. Wildlife sightings can be hit-or-miss, so be patient and don’t get discouraged if you don’t see anything right away.

There are only 80 or 90 Royal Bengal tigers in the park, and they’re extremely elusive. Sometimes even the guides go long stretches of time without seeing one! I suggest the Florican Cottages for your lodgings, which offer comfortable accommodations and tasty food.

Just a three-hour drive from Guwahati is yet another Assamese city that is steeped in legend. Its name translates to “town of blood,” which is a reference to the bloody aftermath of a battle said to have taken place in town between Lord Krishna and Lord Shiva. A fantastic spot to see depictions of figures from Hindu mythology is the Shri Shri Mandir Gate. It depicts Lord Hanuman lifting a mountain called Dronagiri Parvat.

History buffs will love the ancient, carved stones and pillars of Chitralekha Udyan Park . Even more of Tezpur’s history can be seen at the Bamuni Hills archaeological site just outside the city. There, sculptures and carvings from a once-grand temple complex lie in ruin. You also cannot visit Tezpur without trying some of its fantastic food.

upper assam places to visit

I highly recommend the bamboo chicken and banana leaf chicken at Arunima’s Takeaway and the Assamese thali at Khorika – The Ethnic Restaurant. You also shouldn’t skip out on the puchka, which is the regional name for pani puri. You can try it right out on the street and see how many you can down before you get full!

Kaziranga National Park

upper assam places to visit

One of the main reasons I chose to visit Assam in March of 2019 is its wildlife. Kaziranga National Park is perhaps the best spot in the state to spot animals like elephants, rhinos, tigers, swamp deer, water buffalo, and more.

upper assam places to visit

I recommend visiting early in the year when the daytime temperatures don’t get oppressive. Just don’t forget your sunblock and mosquito repellent! Like with Manas National Park, I suggest staying at least two days so you can squeeze in at least four game drives.

upper assam places to visit

I also recommend checking out the nearby Kaziranga Orchid and Biodiversity Park. There, you can see the flora in the area, visit the Assam National Museum, and watch traditional dance performances. They also serve an exceptional thali with over 25 items! Whether you’re more into animals, culture, or food, Kaziranga National Park has it all and has to be on anyone’s list of places to visit in Assam!

The 18 th -century capital of an independent Ahom kingdom, the small city of Jorhat is one of the best places to visit in Assam. Get a glimpse of some of the local wildlife at the nearby Hoollongapar Gibbon Wildlife Sanctuary. To learn more about the history of the Ahom Kingdom, head out to the Sukapha Samannay Kshetra memorial. The memorial is dedicated to the Tai prince who founded the kingdom, Sukaphaa.

upper assam places to visit

Much of the food in Jorhat has a real kick of spice that’s not for the faint of heart. If your taste buds and stomach can handle them, try the spicy momos at Break Time Restaurant. You can also eat spicy pani puri on the streets. Milder fare like the sweet and sour raj kachori at Crunchy Bites and the phenomenal Upper Assamese thali at Chouka Ethnic Cuisine are great options. Another must-have are the tender and smoky tandoori chicken drumsticks at Neev’s, which are bathed in a rich, creamy white cheese sauce!

It would also be a crime to miss out on visiting nearby Majuli Island, which is among the best places to visit in Assam and deserves its own entry.

Majuli island.

upper assam places to visit

There is no doubt in my mind that Majuli Island is among the must-see places to visit in Assam. Located in the middle of the Brahmaputra River, Majuli Island is where you should go to sink your teeth into Assamese culture. The island is roughly a one-hour ferry ride from Jorhat. On the island, I recommend visiting the temple to Lord Krishna and the Sri Sri Uttar Kalambari Satra. Sri Sri Uttar Kalambari Satra contains gorgeous paintings of Lord Hanuman, Lord Rama, and Garuda. These satras are institutional centers that are associated with Vaishnavism.

upper assam places to visit

One of the island’s satras, in particular, makes the trip to Majuli Island worth it. At the Nutan Chamaguri Satra , trained craftsmen create beautiful and intricate masks of gods, demons, and other figures from Hindu mythology. Some of the masks are so detailed that they even have moving mouths! Hang around the satra to witness a dance performance by a young boy dressed as Lord Hanuman.

upper assam places to visit

Afterward, you can buy some of the smaller masks as souvenirs before you head over to Bitupoan Bhojonalaya, a restaurant in Majuli Town. There, I suggest ordering their phenomenal veg thali with chicken curry and fish curry on the side. They’re outstanding together!

Roughly 90 minutes north of Jorhat is the small, historic city of Sivsagar. This city served as the capital of the Ahom Kingdom from 1699 to 1788. Remnants from the Ahom Kingdom still stand today. Because of its rich history, many of Sivasagar’s prominent sites are of the historical variety. As a history buff, I have to recommend the Rang Ghar Pavilion, an 18 th -century sports arena that is also one of the oldest-surviving amphitheaters in Asia.

upper assam places to visit

Another of the top places to visit in Assam is Talatal Ghar. It’s an underground, 18 th -century palace that contains two underground tunnels. Round out your tour of the local historical sites with a stop at the beautiful Kereng Ghar, a 7-story pinkish-orange castle that was built in 1750. When you get hungry, try the empanada-like Mughlai paratha at Maar Akhol Restaurant or the divine Upper Assamese pork feast at Heritage Restaurant. Their bamboo pork is one of the most incredible dishes I’ve ever eaten in India! This dish alone makes Sivasagar one of the top places to visit in Assam. It really is that good!

Stretching 600km along the Brahmaputra River Valley, with a spur down to the hilly southeast, Assam is the largest and most accessible of the Northeast States. Well known for its national parks abounding in rhinoceroses, elephants, deer and primates (with respectable tiger numbers too), it welcomes visitors with a subtly flavoured cuisine and a hospitable population with a vibrant artistic heritage. The archetypal Assamese landscape is a golden-green panorama of rice fields and manicured tea estates, framed by the blue mountains of Arunachal Pradesh in the north and the highlands of Meghalaya and Nagaland to the south. The birthplace of Indian tea, Assam has more than 3000 sq km of land carpeted in bright-green tea gardens, and visits to these estates are high on many travellers' itineraries.

Assam Map: Navigating the Heart of Northeast India

Geographical Overview

Assam, with its expansive landscapes and diverse topography, stands as a geographical marvel in the heart of Northeast India. The state is defined by the majestic Brahmaputra River, whose meandering course shapes the fertile plains of the Brahmaputra Valley. The valley, adorned with lush greenery, provides a stark contrast to the hills and plateaus that characterize the southern regions of Assam.

In the north, the Himalayan foothills, including the mesmerizing hills of Karbi Anglong and Dima Hasao, add a touch of mystique to Assam’s geography. The Brahmaputra, often referred to as the ‘Soul of Assam,’

bestows upon the land its fertile alluvial soil, creating a haven for agriculture and contributing to the state’s rich biodiversity.

The Barak Valley, situated to the south, introduces a different landscape with its hills and tea gardens, offering a scenic contrast to the northern plains. Assam’s geographic diversity not only makes it a visual spectacle but also plays a crucial role in shaping the state’s cultural and economic tapestry.

What is the Capital of Assam

Dispur, a suburb of the bustling city of Guwahati, serves as the administrative capital of Assam. This decision to designate Dispur as the capital was made in 1973, a move aimed at decentralizing administrative functions from Guwahati. Despite its administrative importance, Dispur retains a distinct charm, reflecting a blend of modernity and cultural richness.

The choice of Dispur as the capital is strategic, as it ensures proximity to Guwahati, a major city with well-established infrastructure and connectivity. The capital, nestled in the lap of Assam’s natural beauty, symbolizes the state’s commitment to both progress and preservation of its cultural heritage.

Which Language is Spoken in Assam

Assamese, an Indo-Aryan language, serves as the predominant language spoken in Assam. As the official language of the state, Assamese reflects the cultural identity of the majority population. However, Assam’s linguistic landscape is far from monolithic, with a tapestry of languages contributing to the linguistic diversity.

Apart from Assamese, various tribal languages, such as Bodo, Mishing, Karbi, and others, add layers to the linguistic mosaic. Additionally, due to historical interactions and cultural exchanges, Bengali is widely spoken in parts of Assam, especially in the Barak Valley. This linguistic diversity is a testament to the amalgamation of different communities, each contributing its unique linguistic heritage.

How Many Districts in Assam

Assam is administratively divided into 33 districts, each a microcosm of cultural, geographical, and historical nuances. These districts play a pivotal role in the governance and administration of the state, contributing to its overall diversity.

From the tea-rich landscapes of Dibrugarh in Upper Assam to the cultural hubs of Barpeta in Lower Assam, each district unfolds a unique chapter in Assam’s story. The administrative division not only facilitates governance but also showcases the state’s ability to harmonize the varied elements that contribute to its vibrant tapestry.

Assam is dominated by the mighty River Brahmaputra. Its vast, lush valley sandwiched between the Himalayan foothills to the north and the Meghalayan hills and plateau to the south. An attractive state carpeted by plantations, forests and paddy fields, Assam is one of India ’s few oil regions and produces around sixty percent of the nation’s tea. However, the industry is not as profitable as it once was, and for the marginalised baganiyas (tea workers), mainly adivasis – tribal people brought in from central India by the British to work as indentured labourers on the plantations – depressingly little has changed since colonial times.

More and more visitors are enjoying the delights of the local wildlife and tea plantations, as tourists are rarely embroiled in the strife that underlies the social fabric of Assam. Social divisions and ethnic strife have lead to long-term instability in the state.

The separatist group United Liberation Front of Asom (ULFA) began an armed struggle for independence in 1985. In the early 1990s Assamese nationalism sparked opposition from Bodos, Cachars and other ethnic minorities. Bangladeshi migration into Assam has been a bone of contention for indigenous Assamese, resulting in the deadly clashes of 2012 between migrant Bangladeshis and Bodos that left several dead in the western districts of the state.

Despite the seemingly insurmountable ethnic tensions, occasional violence reported in the press, bandhs and political in-fighting, the situation has vastly improved, as has the infrastructure. Thus more and more visitors are enjoying the delights of the local wildlife and tea plantations, as tourists are rarely embroiled in the strife that underlies the social fabric of Assam.

From exploring the state capital, Guwahati, to trying to spot one-horned rhinos at Kaziranga National Park, here are the best things to do in Assam.

#1 Head to the Kamakhya, Navagraha and Umananda temples of Guwahati

The state capital, Guwahati (or Gauhati), lies on the banks of the mighty Brahmaputra. Although some of the old town still retains its character, Guwahati is a rapidly expanding city of shopping malls. As the main gateway to the region you may well need to stay here briefly.

Guwahati’s main attractions are the Kamakhya, Navagraha and Umananda temples. Northwest of the city are the silk village of Sualkuchi, the pilgrimage site of Hajo and Manas National Park. As the primary hub for the region’s lucrative tea industry, Guwahati’s Assam Tea Auction Centre at Dispur is the largest trade centre in the world for the CTC (crush, tear and curl) tea so characteristic of Assam.

Elsewhere, the bustling markets of Paltan Bazaar, Pan Bazaar and Fancy Bazaar, Guwahati’s main shopping areas, are bunched in the centre on either side of the railway, with the older residential areas north of the tracks spread along the riverside. Assamese silk, wooden rhinos and other crafts are sold at several shops on GNB Road.

#2 Try to spot one-horned rhinos at Kaziranga National Park

Kaziranga National Park is a World Heritage Site covering 430 square kilometres on the southern bank of the Brahmaputra, 217km east of Guwahati. It occupies a vast valley floor against a backdrop of the Karbi Anglong Hills.

The Park's rivulets, shallow lakes and semi-evergreen forested highlands blend into marshes and flood plains covered with tall elephant grass teeming with deer and wild buffalo. However, the big draw, is the park’s famous yet highly endangered one-horned rhinos, best observed from the back of an elephant first thing on a winter’s morning. Jeeps take you deeper into the forest than elephants, but cannot get nearly as close to the rhinos and buffalo

Tiger sightings are relatively rare, despite the park’s official claim to have the highest density of tigers of any park in the world. The abundant birdlife includes also egrets, herons, storks, fish eagles, kingfishers and a grey pelican colony.

#3 Hit up Majuli, one of the largest inhabited river islands in the world

Within striking distance of Jorhat, Majuli is often described as one of the largest inhabited river islands in the world, but erosion in recent years is threatening its claim and, indeed in the long run, its future.

Regardless of its precise status, Majuli is a fascinating place and a true gem of the Northeast, largely because of its unique Vaishnavite satras (Hindu monasteries), though it is also a haven for birdwatchers. There are 22 satras – institutions that contain elements of a temple, monastery, school and centre for the arts – on Majuli: each consists of a prayer hall (namghar), surrounded by living quarters for devotees, and ghats for bathing.

Music, song and dance are essential elements of the devotional life of the satras, and you may be lucky enough to catch one of the performances which are sometimes arranged for large parties of visitors.

#4 Find more rhinos at Pobitora Wildlife Sanctuary

Though much smaller than Kaziranga, at just 39 square kilometres, Pobitora Wildlife Sanctuary on the flood plains of the Brahmaputra has a high density of rhinos and possibilities of multiple sightings. The best time to visit is between November to February, and a visit can be done as a day-trip from Guwahati.

#5 Seek out the varied natural beauty of Manas National Park

Manas National Park, 80km west of Guwahati on the border with Bhutan, has been on UNESCO’s list of endangered World Heritage Sites since 1992. Consisting of two ranges, Bansbari and Koklabari, Manas is well worth visiting for its varied natural beauty, with buffalo and rhino grazing on expansive stretches of sand and grass, and sal forests flanking the Manas River.

Troubled by insurgency and poachers and plagued by development, the park’s population of large mammals had sadly declined – sightings of tigers and elephants are now relatively rare. However, several rhinos have been relocated successfully from Kaziranga and a recent photographic audit between India and Bhutan counted fourteen tigers.

#6 Have your fortune told at Navagraha

On a wooded hill popular with monkeys, the single-domed Navagraha temple – the “temple of the nine planets”, an ancient seat of astrology and astronomy – has wonderful acoustics, especially in the mornings when priests chant prayers for clients in search of solace. Housed in a single red dome, the central lingam is encircled by a further eight representing the planets.

Outside the temple, fortune-tellers (jyotish) will read your future.

#7 Spot the rare golden langur monkeys at Umananda

The Shiva temple of Umananda stands on Peacock Island in the middle of the Brahmaputra. Its location atop a steep flight of steps is more dramatic than the temple itself, but you may get to see some rare golden langur monkeys.

#8 Check out the Assamese-style Kamakhya temple

On the commanding Nilachal Hill, overlooking the river, the important Kali temple of Kamakhya, with its beehive-shaped shikhara, is a good example of the distinctive Assamese style of architecture. As one of the shakti pithas, it marks the place where Sati’s yoni (vulva) landed when her body fell to earth in 51 pieces. Kamakhya maintains a strong tradition of bali (animal sacrifice) which usually takes place around noon.

Sporadic violence does plague Assam. In 2014, a curfew was imposed after violent clashes between a Bodo faction and adivasi tribes around the Kokrajar, Sontipur and Chirang districts.

The region is prone to strikes known as bandhs (lockouts) when shops, restaurants and public transport shut down – check the news and ask travel agencies in the Northeast for advice before and while travelling.

Rough Guides tip: Avoid driving any distance at night, even through Assam, due to the threat of banditry often in the guise of insurgency.

Most visitors to Assam will bed down for at least a night in Guwahati, but there are plenty of high-quality budget hotels and eco-camps within the national parks here too. Here’s where to stay.

From luxurious riverside guesthouses with roof terraces to opulent hotel stays, there are loads of accommodation available in Guwahati. The further from the river, the cheaper it gets.

Manas National Park

Manas has a handful of lodges including at Mathanguri – the area of the park on the banks of the Manas River and the last point up to which you can take personal vehicles – and some in Barpeta Road.

Kaziranga National Park

Kaziranga has a large selection of places to stay with numerous “resorts” cropping up south of the main highway. Accommodation is now reaching saturation point; an alternative is to seek out one of several homestays around Bogorijuri. There is a selection of restaurants along the highway but most of the lodges and resorts have their own catering.

Some 174km northeast of Guwahati, Tezpuris a busy administrative and commercial hub on the north bank of the Brahmaputra. It is a convenient and sometimes essential stop en route to Arunachal Pradesh and provides good road links to Kaziranga National Park (83km) on the south bank across the 3km long Kolia Bhomora Bridge. Eco-camp Ugroshore, set on an empty river island facing Ganesh Ghat, is a new reason to linger longer.

Roads in the Assam valley are well-maintained along the Brahmaputra up to Pasighat and Roing, and there is a good stretch from Tezpur to Tawang. Elsewhere, especially in the hills of Nagaland and the interior of Arunachal Pradesh, roads are generally in a terrible state and journeys can prove tedious and painfully slow. If arranging car rental, ensure you rent a large vehicle such as a Sumo or Bolero for the mountains of Arunachal Pradesh.

Shared taxis and Sumos will get you between destinations in the state. Sumos will only tend to depart when full.

There are good rail links fanning out from Guwahati with many of the major destinations connected.

State and private buses whizz between destinations in Assam, but sometimes travellers will have to take once or more to reach their destination or hire an auto-rickshaw for the last push.

You will need around 5 to 7 days to explore the main highlights of Assam. This is enough time to see Guwahati, Kaziranga National Park, Majuli Island, and the tea gardens of Jorhat. It would also provide enough time to try some traditional Assamese cuisine, and participate in activities like river cruises on the Brahmaputra River.

However, if you wish to delve deeper into Assam's attractions and venture off the beaten path, you may consider extending your stay for 10 to 12 days. As Assam offers opportunities for wildlife enthusiasts, adventure seekers, and those interested in exploring offbeat destinations like Tawang and Haflong, there can be a lot of uncover.

Weather conditions are best from November to April, although the high-altitude areas of Arunachal, Meghalaya and Nagaland are extremely cold by December, and winter fog can disrupt road journeys.

It rains heavily from May to the end of September, particularly in Meghalaya, but travel during this period has its own charm. In major cities such as Guwahati, Tezpur and Shillong, accommodation rates are not affected by the low season, but the remote parts of Assam do offer off-season discounts.

Flights are the most convenient mode of travel, with major airports at Guwahati, Agartala (Mizoram), Dibrugarh, Silchar, Dimapur and Imphal. Here’s how to get to Assam.

Guwahati’s Lok-Priya Gopinath Bordoloi Airport is 20 km southwest of the city centre.

The main station is in Guwahati city centre; trains travelling west also stop at Kamakhya Junction, 8 km west. Along the valley from Guwahati to Upper Assam and Dimapur are reasonable, and there is a rail-link to Naharlagun in central Arunachal.

The Interstate Bus Terminus (ISBT) is inconveniently located on NH-37, 9 km east of Guwahati. Private and public buses leave from here to destinations throughout the Northeast. A handful of private bus companies are based in hectic and chaotic Paltan Bazaar to the south of the station.

Some of the ferries along the Brahmaputra are useful, especially those connecting Majuli Island with the north and south shores of the Brahmaputra. Upmarket cruises also provide a languid and leisurely way of discovering the river and surrounding areas.

Will you see the northern lights Friday? Here's what to know

Almost a third of the states in the u.s. have a chance at seeing the northern lights on friday night and early saturday morning. among them are new york, michigan, montana and idaho..

upper assam places to visit

Editor's note: Read our Saturday coverage about the northern lights forecast for early June .

Another solar storm is in the forecast for Earth, meaning residents of some U.S. states may get another chance to view the aurora borealis on Friday night.

The Space Weather Prediction Center has forecast a possible geomagnetic storm arriving on Friday, May 31, and lasting into the wee hours of Saturday morning. According to the organization, a handful of northern states may end up with conditions suitable for viewing.

Northern lights on May 31 and June 1: Northern lights in US were dim compared to 'last time mother nature showed off'

The phenomena would be the result of the same cluster of sunspots responsible for the  nationwide May 10 aurora display , as they have rotated back in view of the Earth.

The possibility of the lights appearing once more is highly dependent on conditions and location. Here's what to know about your chances of a Friday night light show.

Northern lights forecast

The prediction center forecasts a geomagnetic storm arriving on the evening of May 31 and lasting through the morning of June 1. The storm is predicted to reach an intensity level of 2 out of 5 , a much lower rating than the May 10 storm that was rated a G5 and viewable from all 50 states.

The moderate storm is the result of a coronal mass ejection , or, "huge bubbles of coronal plasma threaded by intense magnetic field lines that are ejected from the sun over the course of several hours," according to NASA. The ejection is the result of a solar flare on May 29.

However, conditions are still up in the air.

"Our confidence in the G2 event is low, mainly because we expect most of the solar material from the coronal mass ejection to pass behind Earth's orbit," said Shawn Dahl, a senior forecaster for the prediction center. "However, there were indications in our analyses that Earth could receive flanking or near proximity influence and based on that chance, our forecasters saw the potential for G2 levels should that happen."

With days getting longer, it is harder to see the aurora, he added, as windows of dark sky are shorter. On top of this, there needs to be a favorable connection between the coronal mass ejection and Earth's magnetic fields during viewing times.

He recommended that those wishing to see the northern lights monitor the prediction center's website for updates and conditions.

What states will have a chance to see the northern lights?

"The aurora may become visible over some northern and upper Midwest states from New York to Idaho," the Space Weather Prediction Center posted on X .

Some states most likely to catch a glimpse include:

  • New Hampshire
  • Massachusetts
  • Rhode Island
  • North Dakota
  • South Dakota

When is the best time to catch a glimpse of the northern lights?

Generally speaking, northern lights viewing is best during the darkest hours of the night and early morning.

Friday's lights should be observable between 11 p.m. Friday and 1 a.m. Saturday, though they can be seen up until about 3 a.m., according to theNational Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration.

"If G1-G2 conditions do indeed materialize ... tonight would most likely be the time to be on the lookout − far less likely Saturday night," Dahl said.

What are the northern lights?

The northern lights are a luminous glow seen around the magnetic poles of the northern and southern hemispheres, according to the University of Alaska Fairbanks Geophysical Institute. Known for creating ribbons of colorful light in the night sky, the aurora borealis are polar lights, or aurora polaris, that appear in the northern hemisphere.

The southern hemisphere  has its own polar lights  known as the southern lights, or aurora australis, which create their own dazzling display.

What causes the northern lights?

Put simply, auroras are a result of the sun interacting with the Earth’s atmosphere. A collision between electrically charged particles from the sun and gases in Earth’s atmosphere produces a series of minuscule flashes that appear like moving lights in the sky. The charged particles are pulled toward the North and South poles due to Earth’s magnetic field.

While that magnetic field usually protects the earth from solar winds, the winds can occasionally get strong enough to bypass the field, allowing particles and gases in the magnetosphere to interact and generate the colorful displays, according to the Geophysical Institute and the  Canadian Space Agency.

Hosts Joanna Hosts Joanna Gaines and Chip Gaines on Demo Day at lake house, as seen on Fixer Upper: The Lake House.

Chip and Joanna Gaines ‘ beloved home renovation series “ Fixer Upper ” is turning 10 and the couple is celebrating with the launch of a new special edition season, “ Fixer Upper: The Lakehouse .”

Premiering Sunday on the Gaines’  Magnolia Network  (part owned by Warner Bros. Discovery) and HGTV, the original home of the “Fixer Upper” franchise, and streaming same day on Max and Discovery+, the six-episode “Lakehouse” follows Chip and Jo as they take on a unique mid-century modern lakehouse flip near Lake Waco, a new neighborhood for the home reno couple based in Waco, Texas.

How content spending will grow in the post-peak tv era, daytime emmy hosts will once again be 'entertainment tonight' anchors kevin frazier and nischelle turner (exclusive), popular on variety.

The Gaineses have now produced many varieties of unscripted shows alongside Magnolia Network president Allison Page for their linear channel and for streaming via Max, while also building out their Magnolia home goods and kitchenware brand, a magazine, plus their shopping and dining attraction The Silos in Waco.

“When you think about the original ‘Fixer’ and the template of around 17 episodes a season and they were hourlong episodes and you’d get this reno within that hour, that’s TV gold,” Joanna Gaines says. “And we did that for five seasons and we worked our butts off for it and when we look back, we don’t know how we did it. It was so much going on, because not only were we doing the show and these renovations, we were doing other renovations, and doing Magnolia, which is the retail side and growing that business as well.”

Chip Gaines adds: “There are easy things to put together, like when Jo goes and does a cooking show, it’s been beautiful to watch. That’s a compatible source; you can take this thought and you can take this industry, which is the TV side of the business, and you can put those together fairly seamlessly. With construction and real customers and real timelines, these are complicated oil-and-water realities to mix together. We were the tail and there was a dog wagging us, years and years ago, and it was fine. And it worked out and by the grace of God, we learned a lot and we all made it out alive.”

As their five children grow up, with three now ages 16 and up, Joanna Gaines says the couple is thinking about “what we really focus on in this season of our life.”

“The reason why ‘Fixer’ looks different now and how these seasons have evolved is these seasons truly are this one house where we take it a little slower,” Joanna Gaines says. “I’ve found that when you do these episodes where it’s one show, I can actually think as the designer and the contractor and the production side, take it in and enjoy the process. Before, you didn’t get to stop and enjoy anything, you just kept moving. It’s ‘Fixer,’ it’s just ‘Fixer’ evolved. And who knows, maybe one day we’ll be back doing it that way.”

After all these years of fixer-uppering, the Gaineses have encountered some strange situations in the homes they renovate — and what they see in “The Lakehouse” is no different. As a teaser, in one episode, Chip comes across a large column standing squarely in the middle of the master bedroom, with a kind of marble patterned material wrapped around it, and no indication why it was placed there because it is not a load-bearing column.

But that’s far from the weirdest thing they’ve ever seen during a flip, according to Joanna Gaines.
