Where to Sit When Flying United's 777-300ER: Economy and Economy Plus

Zach Honig

Last Monday, we had our very first opportunity to experience United's new 777-300ER (77W), complete with a tour from the airline's CEO, Oscar Munoz . And while business class is a massive improvement over the 2-4-2 seats United flies on many of its other international aircraft, economy is a different story altogether.

united 777 virtual tour

On this particular 777 model, economy seats measure just 17 inches wide, compared to the up to 17.3 inches on the 787 and the up to 18 inches on United's 767s and almost all 777-200s. That extra inch makes a huge difference, especially if you're unfortunate enough to have especially broad shoulders.

Economy Cabin

Before you get too excited by the pictures below — oooooh new airplane smell! — make no mistake about it; 3-4-3 economy on a 777 is tight . To put 17 inches into perspective, United's newest 737s (the backbone of the domestic fleet) offer up to 17.3 inches of space, so you'll have more room for your shoulders on a 45-minute hop from Newark to Boston than you will on a 14-hour trek from San Francisco to Hong Kong.

united 777 virtual tour

With that out of the way, let's try to make this experience as comfortable for you as possible.

United has 102 Economy Plus and 204 regular coach seats spread between three cabins — all in a 3-4-3 configuration. The first four rows are in a mini-cabin of sorts, and you'll probably find these to be the most quiet. But the best seats in the house ( outside of the Polaris cabins, of course ) are located in the third economy cabin, in row 39 (more on that shortly).

united 777 virtual tour

TPG had a blast in the empty economy section during our preview flight earlier this week , but your experience will likely be entirely different.

united 777 virtual tour

First, some good news — this is a brand-new plane, so everything is shiny and fresh.

united 777 virtual tour

Also, each seat has its own touchscreen in-flight entertainment system (the same model found on some of UA's other wide-body aircraft) and a decent-sized tray table.

united 777 virtual tour

You'll also get a USB charging port and a shared power outlet (located between the seats).

united 777 virtual tour

The bad news is that the seats are narrow and especially close together — in other words, if you book the 777-300ER hoping for an upgrade to United's flashy new Polaris cabin and you end up getting stuck in coach, it's going to be a very long flight across the Pacific.

united 777 virtual tour

Which Seats to Pick (Economy Plus)

As my buddy Jason Rabinowitz points out, there's not a lot to like about the economy seating arrangement on United's 777-300ER:

That said, I did find several (a very limited number) of decent options — and, not surprisingly, most are designated as Economy Plus.

My first pick would be the aisle and window seats in row 39 — we're talking 39A, 39C, 39J and 39L. These seats are located at the front of the third economy cabin, and, since they're Economy Plus, non-elites will need to pay extra ($186 when flying from SFO to HKG).

united 777 virtual tour

The seats in row 24 also provide a tremendous amount of legroom, but note that the exit door limits your space a bit at the window seats (24A and 24L). These seats are also a $186 up-sell ($179 for the middle seats). Note that rows 19, 24, 39 and the four center seats in row 40 do not offer under-seat storage.

united 777 virtual tour

Beyond that, I like most of the window-side seats in the Economy Plus section, given that you'll have 34 inches of pitch instead of 31. A window seat in the mini-cabin, 21L, is pictured below. Note that economy passengers do not receive Saks Fifth Avenue pillows and blankets — they were only available on this special preview flight.

united 777 virtual tour

Which Seats to Pick (Economy)

Let's be real — there's not much to like about any 17-inch-wide seat with just 31 inches of pitch. That said, there were a couple of seats I didn't hate . If you're traveling with just one other person and don't have access to free Economy Plus, I'd select either 50A and 50B, or 50K and 50L — the only decent paired seats on the plane.

united 777 virtual tour

After that, most of the seats are more or less identical (with a few exceptions below), though seats in the middle of each cabin will probably have less traffic than those in the far front or rear.

Which Seats to Avoid

First, I'd avoid any seats up against a bulkhead wall (typically in the last row of a cabin), since recline will be limited. That includes seats 51A and B (pictured above), along with 51K and L. In this category, you'll also want to skip 22DEFG, 37ABC, 37DEFG, 37JKL and the four seats in row 52.

After that, any of the middle seats should absolutely be avoided (where TPG's hiding below) — that means you shouldn't select B, E, F or K seats.

united 777 virtual tour

Middle seats in regular economy are an even tighter squeeze than those in Economy Plus (TPG found this "F" seat to be an especially snug fit, but then again, he's 6' 7").

united 777 virtual tour

Additionally, blogger Seth Miller (of Wandering Aramean ) joined us on the preview flight and brought along a ruler to measure the seats, discovering that aisle seats are actually a hair narrower, at 16.75 inches.

united 777 virtual tour

Bottom Line

You'll probably dislike economy on the 777-300ER just as much as you'll love the seats up at the "pointy end" — that is, those in the Polaris business-class cabins . If you're flying in coach, your best-case scenario would be to score an entire center row, giving you space to stretch out, and perhaps even create your own "sky-couch" situation.

united 777 virtual tour

Otherwise, this is a plane you'll want to avoid. While it may seem exciting to fly on a brand-new aircraft, United will be using the 777-300ERs on some of its longest flights, and that's a lot of time to be squished into a tight economy seat. If you see the seat map below (with 3-4-3 in economy) when searching for a flight on United.com, it wouldn't be a bad idea to consider other options as well.

Live and Let's Fly

Review: United Airlines 777-200 Economy Class HD (High Density)

United airlines 777-200 hd review.

As I mentioned in my introductory post , we booked this trip for 15,000 Turkish Airlines miles round-trip plus $11.20 in taxes….a great price considering round-trip pricing was $500.

February seems like so long ago. Keep in mind this trip came a month before COVID-19 exploded, but the seats onboard this aircraft have not changed.

We could have used my 1K status to preboard, but had breakfast in the Alaska Airlines Lounge prior to the flight and thus were quite late to the boarding process. Thankfully, we did not have any issues finding overhead bin space even though half the flight had already boarded.

United 1158 Los Angeles (LAX) – Honolulu (HNL) Monday, February 17 Depart: 08:00AM Arrive: 12:33PM Duration: 06hr, 33min Aircraft: 777-200 HD Seat: 25A,B (EconomyPlus)

I love this morning 777 to Hawaii, a flight I have taken for years on United. The friendly crews, often with Hawaiian-themed aprons or flowers in their hair set the mood for the trip to Honolulu.

I had assigned seats 25A and 25C in the rear of the EconomyPlus cabin, hoping the middle seat would remain open. Just a few days before the flights there were many, many unsold seats. But Honolulu is one of the most popular standby destinations in the United network and about 60 employee standbys cleared onto the flight. I ended up giving up my aisle seat and sitting in the middle while Augustine took the window.

The HD configuration has only 28 seats in business class and 336 seats in economy class (78 EconomyPlus and 258 United Economy).

a child sitting in a plane

Another note on the cabin. There are 10 seats across–3-4-3 configuration–and legroom ranges from 31″ in United economy to 35″ in EconomyPlus. Personal TVs have been pulled out and instead there is a clamp holder behind each seat for a mobile phone or tablet so you can stream IFE from UA’s intranet library. Power ports have been added, with plugs spaced between each seats (a row of three has two plugs). I include more unobstructed cabin pictures in the return journey below.

a close up of a machine

We enjoyed a number of aircraft as we departed, including two classic liveries, one for Continental and one for Allegheny (American Airlines). It was a beautiful morning.

an airplane on a runway

Once we leveled off, flight attendants began service, offering a beverage of choice, stroopwafels or pretzels, and a menu of buy-on-board items. By virtue of my 1K status (which I had added to the Turkish reservation), I was entitled to one free drink and one free food item. I chose the Italian sausage frittata, which was smaller than the pictures make it look but quite tasty. Augustine and I split it. He also had a banana.

a group of snacks on a table

A second beverage service was offered prior to landing. I had my customary Mai Tai and Augustine had another apple juice.

a bottle of liquid and a cup of ice

What do you do on a six hour flight with a restless three-year-old? Honestly, Augustine was very well-behaved on this flight. He sat still for the most part. He colored a bit, we practiced distinguishing aircraft from one another, watched some German cartoons I had downloaded on my phone, and even took a little nap. It was a very smooth flight in that respect.

a child reading a magazine on an airplane

Truly, this flight was a precious memory.

We landed a couple minutes late in Honolulu and began the plane spotting game once again.

an airplane wing and blue sky

After a great day and half in Honolulu, we took a redeye back to Los Angeles.

Rather than allot time for the United Club (review here ), we just waited and left the hotel late. We still managed to arrive early enough to have a snack in the Plumeria Lounge  and do a bit of planespotting.

a group of people with luggage on an escalator

United 534 Honolulu (HNL) – Los Angeles (LAX) Tuesday, February 18 Depart: 10:50PM Arrive: 06:02AM+1 Duration: 05hr, 12min Aircraft: 777-200 HD Seat: 27A,B (Economy Class)

Not much to say about the flight itself, which is why I am lumping it into a single review. We were among the first to board, so I was able to capture some cabin pictures before it filled up:

a row of seats in an airplane

Augustine got comfortable, then promptly fell asleep before boarding was even complete. He did not wake up again until we landed in Los Angeles. I quickly fell asleep too after takeoff, so no commentary on inflight service during the redeye flight.

How was legroom in a “regular” economy class middle seat? It certainly wasn’t comfortable, but I managed to drift in and out of sleep for the five-hour journey.

a child using a paper dispenser

We landed early in Los Angeles and that’s when the trouble started.

a plane at an airport

Try waking up a three-year-old who has only had five hours of sleep. Augustine did not want to leave the plane and had a TOTAL MELTDOWN. Kicking, screaming, going limp when I tried to pick him up or carry him…

That left me to carry him and two rollerboards. A kind good Samaritan (an understanding mother of course) stopped to help me with one of the bags. What a blessing she was.

So, great flight…not so great disembarkation.

United’s 777-200HD is not horrible. While I far prefer most other planes in the United fleet, the daytime flight in EconomyPlus was totally manageable. I’d love to see PTVs at each seat, but that certainly won’t happen, especially in this pandemic era. Just remember to bring your own IFE or download the United app prior to your flight and you’ll also have hours of entertainment to help pass the time.

Adorable and a great bonding experience. Dumb question here but if it was just the two of you how did you get so many pictures of the two of you together in a bunch of places?

' src=

We flew to Hawaii with my parents…my mother took the pictures.

More info here:

I am surprised you did not comment on the narrow width nor thin seats on the 777-HD. With only 17” of seat width and 10 seats across, this plane is incredibly uncomfortable. When flying next to an adult, the narrow width requires constant leaning forward and back, switching off between your neighbor Also, the economy seats are new, but the business class seats are were left as-is for the retrofit-leaving the seats worn and half broken on every 777-HD I’ve flown. I highly suggest to avoid the 777-HD configuration for anything over 2.5 hrs. And bring a seat cushion if you do fly on it.

I guess I didn’t notice.

' src=

So you were in Hawaii for one night?

Yes. Two days, one night, and it was totally worthwhile.

' src=

Great pictures. I am up for adoption if you want to drag me around on some of your adventures! But I am not as cute as Augustine.

But … how dare UA have a 777 with no seatback monitors? What were they thinking – or not thinking? I just don’t understand that move.

' src=

At least pre-COVID, United was in the process of installing seatback monitors on these aircraft. The first tail in domestic configuration is N220UA, which is currently stored in Roswell, NM. As far as I know, that project is on hold now.

I should say the first tail in the NEW domestic configuration (with seatback entertainment) is N220UA.

United actually has 74 777-200s, made up of 22 777-224ERs, 33 777-222ERs, and 19 777-222s. Combined with the 22 777-300ERs, United has the second-largest fleet of 777s in the world, at 96, only surpassed by Emirates.

Thanks. You should update the Wikipedia article! 😉

' src=

It looks like your frittata was sitting directly on your tray table sans any protective cup. Knowing what lurks on tray tables is enough to make any stomach churn.

It was on a protective plastic and later (not pictured fully) a plate I brought along. I bring along a plate, real cup, glass, and silverware when I fly in economy. Weird…I know. That probably warrants a separate post.

' src=

I’d say it does!

' src=

Isn’t UA 1158 from LAX to HNL ? Also I am of the impression that one way LAX – HNL is for 7500 Turkish miles. How did you snag them for 6000 ?

Typos. Thanks.

you are welcome. This 15k round-trip can come down to 13.5k if you have Citi Rewards card (10% off, limit 10,000 miles per year)

MIDDLETOWN, Pa. - Three alumni and one former administrator will comprise the inaugural class of the Penn State Harrisburg Athletics Hall of Fame. The college's first induction ceremony will take place Friday, Oct. 25 as part of Penn State Harrisburg's annual "We Are Weekend."

The group of former Penn State Harrisburg standout student-athletes represent three sports: Kenton Alston '12 (men's basketball), Kara (Boyd) Schanz '12 (softball), and Danny Francis '11 (men's soccer). Former longtime director of athletics Reuben "Bud" Smitley will be inducted alongside the trio of alumni this fall.

The purpose of the Penn State Harrisburg Athletics Hall of Fame is to commemorate the achievements of those student-athletes, coaches, administrators, and staff who have distinguished themselves through excellence in athletic performance and service.

One of the most decorated players in program history, Kenton Alston's collegiate career began after five years of military service with the United States Marine Corps and two deployments to Iraq. A force on both ends of the court, the Harrisburg, Pa. native earned four all-conference honors over the course of his career, including three first-team accolades. The power forward scored 1,713 points and pulled down 807 rebounds during his career; both numbers that rank second in program history. Penn State Harrisburg's all-time leader in field goals (713) and blocked shots (290), Alston was highlighted in Sports Illustrated's "Faces In the Crowd" while leading his team to four straight postseason berths, including back-to-back North Eastern Athletic Conference (NEAC) Championship Game appearances in 2011 and 2012.

After ranking second in the nation with a .570 batting average that spring, Schanz was named the NEAC Player of the Year. A four-time first-team all-conference honoree, the switch hitter slashed .434/.472/.619 with a 1.091 career OPS, while also excelling as a pitcher, evidenced by her 319 strikeouts that stand as the all-time program record. The program's career leader in shutouts (8) and stolen bases (29), she also ranks top-five all-time in nearly every offensive statistical category, including batting average, on-base percentage, slugging percentage, hits (172), runs (108), runs batted in (68), triples (19), and doubles (26).

The Pottstown, Pa. native was a four-time NEAC All-Conference selection, earning first-team honors in 2010 after picking up three consecutive second-team nods from 2007-09. Thanks to his efforts, the Lions secured three NEAC Tournament berths during his career, including a run to the conference championship game during his senior campaign. Francis holds single-game program records for total points (8) and goals scored (4), as well as single-season benchmarks for points (46 - 2009) and markers (21 - 2009). 14. Where to Sit When Flying United's New 777-200: Polaris Business Class

United's committed to adding a Polaris-equipped plane every 10 days through 2020, so it shouldn't be long before the old three-cabin configuration disappears entirely. Until it does, I'd avoid those 2-4-2 business-class seats at (almost) any cost — if you can't get the "real" Polaris seat just yet, choose a 777 with the old 2-2-2 Continental ...

Economy Cabin. United's retrofitted 777-200s sport a total of 242 economy seats, compared with 221 prior to their update. Most of those additional seats come from a jump from a 3-3-3 arrangement, with up to 18.1-inch seat width, to 3-4-3 with a width of 17.25 inches. That's a noticeable decline, especially when it comes to shoulder space.
