UAE Tour 2022 Route stage 4: Fujairah Fort – Jebel Jais

The riders clip into their pedals near the oldest and largest castle of all seven emirates combined. The route winds its way north before the finish climb kicks in.

The summit of Jebel Jais is the only place in the United Arab Emirates where snow has been reported. Far from frequent though, you can count the occasions on the fingers of one hand, although it did happen last year. The Jebel Jais reaches an altitude of 1,943 metres. As far as the riders are concerned, Jebel Jais doesn’t go higher than 1,491 metres, which is where the finish lies.

With a number of prolonged false flat sections on the run-up to the Jebel Jais ascent, the 5th stage is arguably the hardest stage of the UAE Tour. The last 21.1 kilometres rise 5.4% on a carriageway, while the surrounds are barren and rocky. As if climbing on the moon.

Jebel Jais includes wide hairpins and the gradients hover between 4 to 6% in the first part. The second half is slightly tougher with a steepest ramp of 9% inside the last 2.8 kilometres. This section averages 7.1%.

It will be the third time a pro-peloton visits Jebel Jais. Primoz Roglic outsprinted Tom Dumoulin in 2019, while Jonas Vingegaard won last year’s Jebel Jais stage with a late attack. The margins were small though, on both occassions. The consistent but fairly shallow gradient of the climb made it hard to open up substantial gaps.

The first three riders on the line gain time bonuses of 10, 6 and 4 seconds, while the intermediate sprints come with 3, 2 and 1 seconds.

PREVIEW | UAE Tour 2024 stage 4 - Can Tim Merlier win again? Massive column of sprinters await likely chaotic finale

Preview . After two important GC days, the race returns to the hand of the sprinters. Stage 4 of the UAE Tour should see another mythical battle among the over two dozen strong sprinters present at the race.

A stage in Dubai. The first part is in downtown Dubai, passing around the Burj Khalifa before crossing Deira and skirting the Grand Flag. The race will leave the city heading towards the desert, passing by classic sites of these stages such as Al Qudra Cycletrack and the Jumeirah Islands. It then passes through Palm Jumeirah to finish in Dubai Harbour. The entire route runs on very wide and substantially straight roads, interspersed with very large radius traffic circles and well paved.

PREVIEW | UAE Tour 2024 stage 4 - Can Tim Merlier win again? Massive column of sprinters await likely chaotic finale

The finale will have nothing of technical. By the sea, the riders may be exposed to wind which can make the difference in the sprint. The peloton takes on a 90-degree right turn at the entrance of the final kilometer and then have a clean run-in to the line.

The Weather

PREVIEW | UAE Tour 2024 stage 4 - Can Tim Merlier win again? Massive column of sprinters await likely chaotic finale

Some wind from the west. Most of the stage will be in an urban setting so echelons are unlikely, the riders will not be exposed. The finale could be exposed however with some cross-headwind in the final kilometers, and then as well in the final straight of 700 meters in distance. Can this make a difference for the final sprint?

2024 UAE Tour Race Center - TV, Startlist, Profile, Prize Money, Previews & Results

The Favourites

Tim Merlier - Winner on the opening day. That's where Merlier usually performs, but now the rest of the race follows. The truth is this will be a chaotic sprint likely where whoever finds the best opportunity wins. The Belgian is good at that though, and he has the experience moving around finales like this. A pure powerhouse, he will enjoy this sprint.

Sam Welsford - BORA - hansgrohe arguably have the best leadout in the peloton at the moment. Danny van Poppel did crash though and this could be the make or break for the German team. If he feels it in the legs (or in the head) and is unable to get Welsford in prime position, I doubt the Australian can figure himself out amongst the chaos. However if they do work it out as they did at the Tour Down Under, Welsford has in my opinion the speed to beat all the competition that we've got.

Profiles & Route UAE Tour 2024

My honest opinion is there is little insight to be given ahead of this sprint. We've got little to no technical features and sprinters will know it's all about timing. The "classic" leadout does not work here, because the stage is pan-flat, with no wind, everyone will arrive fresh at the finale and we have around 15 sprinters capable of fighting for victory with their own support riders. There simply is no space for everyone, so many will find themselves isolated in the middle of the pack.

Fernando Gaviria and Juan Sebastián Molano launched early on the opening day. I argue this is not a bad strategy, someone who does this can be rewarded but needs to time it to perfection and have the luck of not having anyone immediately in the wheel. Riders such as Mark Cavendish, Elia Viviani and Simone Consonni have experience on the track and could benefit from it.

"Too many parties and alcohol" as Patrick Lefevere is tough as nails to get Julian Alaphilippe back to his best

Arvid de Kleijn and Jakub Mareczko had brilliant results on the opening day, outsiders like these can absolutely rule among chaos. Don't discount the likes of Arne Marit, Pascal Ackermann and Stanislaw Aniolkowski who can be i a similar situation. We've got Fabio Jakobsen and Sam Bennett with a point to prove with their new teams.

Then we've got other clear victory contenders such as Dylan Groenewegen , Olav Kooij, Phil Bauhaus and Kaden Groves . None enter the stage above the others, but all have a chance of succeeding here.

2024 UAE Tour Prize Money Distribution - €300.000 in total

Prediction UAE Tour 2024 stage 4:

*** Tim Merlier, Sam Welsford ** Dylan Groenewegen, Arvid de Kleijn, Fabio Jakobsen * Olav Kooij, Kaden Groves, Juan Sebastián Molano, Phil Bauhaus, Fernando Gaviria, Mark Cavendish, Jakub Mareczko, Simone Consonni

Pick : Sam Welsford

'Tadej can win a sprint against anyone' - UAE Team Emirates back Pogačar to win world title in Zürich

Team manager Mauro Gianetti torn between Slovenian and Switzerland's Marc Hirschi

Tadej Pogačar of UAE Team Emirates at a training session prior to 2024 Grand Prix Cycliste de Quebec

UAE Team Emirates Manager Mauro Gianetti sat in the back of the conference room as Tadej Pogačar talked about his hopes and ambitions for the Road World Championships in Zürich for Slovenia, quietly convinced his team leader could win the rainbow jersey on Sunday.

Gianetti signed Pogačar when he was still a teenager and has helped him develop into the generational talent that he is today. The veteran Swiss team manager helped plan and prepare Pogačar's incredible 2024 season and his Giro d'Italia-Tour de France double victory .

Now cycling's triple crown is within reach.

"If Tadej wins the triple crown it'd be amazing but the first goal has to be to win the race," Gianni warned to Cyclingnews and Dutch newspaper De Telegraaf , cautious but also confident that Pogačar could soon race in a rainbow-striped UAE Team Emirates jersey.

"He's been thinking about the world title for a long time but this year is perhaps the first time the course really suits him,"  Gianetti pointed out. "Tadej is in very good shape. He worked so hard after the Tour, it was really impressive to see.

"He sacrificed so much in his life this year. He spent time at altitude in the spring, raced the Giro and won it, then went to altitude again. He won the Tour but only had a few days holiday. He then dived back into training with incredible passion and determination to be at his best for the World Championships."

Gianetti went close to a world title victory himself in Lugano in 1996, losing a two-rider sprint to Johan Museeuw of Belgium. Pogačar would perhaps prefer to win alone and avoid the risk of losing a sprint finish in Zürich on Sunday but Gianetti is convinced he can also win from a small group.

"Tadej is fast in a sprint too, it depends who he is with," Gianetti suggested. "Tadej can win a sprint against anyone after a hard 273km race, that's a big advantage he has."

The race and the five laps of the hilly and twisting 27-kilometre circuit in Zürich will ultimately decide if Pogačar becomes world champion.

"A lot of riders can, in theory, be up there, but how they race will decide how many riders fight for victory," Gianetti warned.

"Mathieu van der Poel can be up there if he's in good shape, there's Remco Evenepoel too, maybe a rider like Michael Matthews and others."

UAE Team Emirates will have multiple riders in Sunday's race but they will race for their national teams and so, in theory, against Pogačar, who has Primož Roglič and Jan Tratnik as key teammates in the Slovenian squad.

Marc Hirschi leads the Swiss team. He rides for UAE Team Emirates but will leave for Tudor in 2025. Gianetti is torn between cheering for Pogačar and his fellow countryman Hirschi, but both could give UAE Team Emirates the world title.

"We'd have preferred if Marc had stayed with us [UAE Team Emirates] but I can understand he wanted to team up with his good friend and mentor Fabian Cancellara at Tudor. But I'd honestly be happy if Marc won the world title because he rides for us this year and would win the rainbow jersey for us."
