World Wide Travel Vaccines

Wirral Based Vaccine and Immunisation Clinic

What Travel Vaccines Do I Need?

The UK national vaccination programme keeps you and your family protected against UK infections, but when travelling abroad you may need extra protection from infections which affect other parts of the world. Where you are travelling to, and at what time of the year will determine which vaccines you need. The NHS estimates that almost 1 in 4 British Holidaymakers will travel without receiving adequate vaccinations. This means they are at risk of contracting potentially life threatening infectious illnesses. They are also putting others at risk and create the potential to bring back un-native infectious diseases to the UK. Most travel vaccines are suitable for both adults and children. However, there may be some age restrictions to consider. If you are travelling with a baby or toddler, please allow plenty of time ahead of your departure to consult with a Travel Nurse. Here is a list of common vaccines required for travel that we currently offer: * These vaccines may be available via the NHS. Please consult with your own GP for more information.

  • Hepatitis B (unless combined with hepatitis A
  • Japanese encephalitis
  • Tick-borne encephalitis
  • Meningitis vaccines
  • Tuberculosis (TB)
  • Yellow fever
  • Diphtheria, polio and tetanus boosters*
  • Cholera vaccine*
  • Typhoid vaccine*
  • Hepatitis A + B (combined) vaccine*

Travel Vaccinations

If you require any vaccinations relating to foreign travel you will need to complete a Travel Vaccination Form as soon as possible. These are available from Reception. Your completed form will be passed to the Practice Nurse for her to determine what vaccinations are required and this will depend upon which countries and areas within countries you are visiting.

There is further information about countries and vaccinations required on the links below

You can then make an appointment with the Practice Nurse and this needs to be least 6 weeks before you travel for the vaccinations to be effective.  She will advise you what vaccinations are required and will administer them.

Some travel vaccines are ordered on a private prescription and these incur a charge over and above the normal prescription charge. This is because not all travel vaccinations are included in the services provided by the NHS such as Malaria tablets and Yellow Fever vaccinations.

Travel Advice

Travel advice – holiday vaccinations.

If you require any vaccinations relating to foreign travel you need to make an appointment with the practice nurse to discuss your travel arrangements. This will include which countries and areas within countries that you are visiting to determine what vaccinations are required.  It is important to make this appointment as early as possible preferably 6 weeks before but at least 4 weeks before you travel to allow the vaccines to work. Most vaccines are kept in stock. Our practice nurse can also provide travel/health advice.

Please ask at reception for an appointment with the practice nurse.

To be able to have your travel vaccine at the surgery or travel advice please complete the travel assessment form and bring into the surgery. •  Download a PDF  and print out and bring to the surgery •  Download a Word document , complete and bring it with you or email the form to us:  cwp. ohsreception @nhs.net

Payment for vaccinations

We reviewed our policy on providing holiday vaccines free of charge on 1st January 2018.

Vaccinations for the following conditions are usually available free on the NHS:

• Diphtheria, Polio and Tetanus booster  • Hepatitis A • Meningitis C • Typhoid

You will usually have to pay for the following vaccinations for overseas travel:

• Hepatitis B (see next section)

Hepatitis B

The Hepatitis B vaccine is usually given free of charge to people in high-risk groups for hepatitis B. However, your GP is not obliged to give the hepatitis B jab free if:

  • They think you’re not at risk
  • You need the jab because of your job

Some employers may have arrangements with a GP or other healthcare service to provide the vaccine free for their employees.

This should be checked with employers before booking an appointment.

If you need the Hepatitis B jab because you’re travelling abroad, you will have to pay for it.

If you require a prescription for Malaria medication then it is a private prescription which there will be a charge for or you can get medication over the counter at the pharmacy.

Private Prescription £15.00

Hepatitis B  course of 3 – £111.00

Hepatitis B dose 4 (accelerated dose) £37.00

If you are going on a multi destination holiday or going to a more exotic area that has higher risk then you would need to attend the travel clinic. The closest travel clinics are Chester and Liverpool.

You can find out more background from  www.netdoctor.co.uk/travel  but please note we are not responsible for information on this site and you should speak to our nurse before travelling.

Travel vaccinations

How to find out what vaccinations you’ll need when travelling abroad.

  • Vaccination (Sub-topic)

In the UK, the  NHS routine vaccination schedule   protects you against a number of diseases. However, this does not cover all infectious diseases found overseas.

If you are planning to travel outside the UK, you should consider whether you need additional vaccinations. These will depend on the areas you will be visiting. You can find out which vaccinations are necessary or recommended on these websites:

  • Travel Health Pro
  • NHS Fit for Travel

From the 1 st October 2023, you can get the following travel vaccinations for free with the NHS. Ask your GP practice for details:

  • hepatitis A

Some travel vaccinations are only available privately. Your healthcare professional will be able to advise you on the cost for these. If your GP practice does not provide the travel vaccinations you need, contact a:

  • private travel vaccination clinic
  • pharmacy offering travel healthcare services

You can find further information on  NHS 111 Wales .

Being a very diversely-populated multi-cultural country, Canadians and many Wirral travelers are likely to travel to diverse travel destinations not only for business or pleasure, but also to visit family and friends. As you'll read on the travel diseases pages on this site, you are at a higher risk of contracting some travel-related diseases when you are visiting family and friends, because living quarters are shared, kitchen utensils are shared, and you are more likely to be in close proximity with the family or friends that you are visiting. So it is important to learn about these travel health risks and be protected against the travel diseases by taking the necessary health precautions before you travel.

The best way to do this is to find a travel clinic in Wirral and book a pre-travel consultation appointment with a travel medicine specialist there, who can advise you on all the travel risks from infectious diseases, the travel vaccinations available to protect you against these diseases, and the primary and secondary travel health precautions and travel health measures you can take to further prevent you from contracting any diseases.

These Wirral travel medicine professionals will also be able to provide health information and travel advice about travel vaccination requirements, global health issues, and travel advisories and warnings issued about travel to your destination from Wirral.

In addition to finding your nearest travel vaccination clinic, don't forget to check the Travel Alerts and Travel Advisories page on this site to learn about any recent disease outbreaks or special travel health precautions which may need to be taken when traveling to your destination.
