While teeth whitening services are available at many dentist offices, they can be expensive and time-consuming. Professional treatments typically cost over $200 and appointments can last 90 minutes or longer. Thankfully, many oral care brands offer more cost-effective, over-the-counter teeth whitening treatments you can use at home. Experts say they aren’t as strong as in-office treatments, but they can tackle minor discoloration if used correctly and consistently.

Below, I talked to two dentists about what you can expect from at-home teeth whitening treatments and how to shop for them. I also rounded up our favorite options from brands like Crest, Colgate and Burt's Bees.

I notice a difference in the shade of my teeth when I use these whitening strips as directed for 30 minutes a day and I frequently repurchase them.

How we picked the best at-home teeth whitening treatments

Everyone’s teeth are different, so finding a whitening treatment that works for you will likely involve some trial and error, says Dr. Ilona Casellini, the founder of and a dentist at Swiss Quality Smile in Los Angeles, California. Pay attention to how your teeth react to different products, specifically noting which ones lighten tooth color the best with the least amount of sensitivity. 

While shopping for at-home teeth whitening treatments, experts recommend considering the following factors.

• Active ingredients : Hydrogen peroxide and carbamide peroxide are the most common whitening agents products rely on to get rid of tooth stains, according to the ADA . These active ingredients penetrate tooth enamel and break down discoloration without softening or thinning teeth, experts say.
• Strength : Every teeth whitening product is made with a certain percentage of active ingredients, and the higher that percentage is, the stronger its whitening capabilities are. But the most powerful whitener may not be the best option for you, says Dr. Matt Messina , an assistant professor at The Ohio State University College of Dentistry and the clinic director at Ohio State’s Upper Arlington Dentistry. If you’ve never whitened your teeth before or have a history of tooth sensitivity, he recommends starting with products that contain lower concentrations of active whitening ingredients and gradually increasing if you can tolerate it.
• Product type : At-home teeth whitening products are available as toothpastes, whitening pens, whitening trays, mouthwashes and more. Think about which you prefer and which best fits into your lifestyle. How effective at-home teeth whitening products are greatly depends on using them consistently, so choose a product you can see yourself sticking with, says Casellini.
• ADA Seal of Acceptance : The ADA Seal of Acceptance is the “gold standard” for oral care products, experts told us. When you see that seal, it means the brand submitted data and other materials to the ADA and the organization determined that the product meets specified safety and efficacy requirements. This does not mean that whitening products without the ADA Seal are ineffective — it just means brands have not submitted their products for the ADA to review.

What are the different types of teeth whitening treatments?

The teeth whitening treatment you choose is dependent on your preferences and your dentist's recommendations. Below, we outline different options:

• Teeth whitening pens: If you’re looking for a portable teeth whitening option that you can travel with, many brands offer pens filled with a gel formula of whitening ingredients like hydrogen peroxide or carbamide peroxide. To use a whitening pen, you brush the gel on your teeth, leave it on for the specified amount of time and repeat as directed.
• LED teeth whitening treatments: Some teeth whitening kits come with devices (kind of like mouth guards) that have built-in LED lights, which help activate the included whitening gel, experts told us. You add the whitening gel to the device or directly to your teeth, and wear it for a set amount of time. Once you own the LED light device, you can buy refills of the brand’s gel to continuously reuse it.
• Mouthwash: Like whitening toothpaste, whitening mouthwash typically has a lower concentration of whitening agents, so its impact is minimal, experts told us. With that being said, whitening mouthwash can be a good option to use after a professional whitening treatment or if you’ve never whitened your teeth at home before.
• Whitening toothpaste: Whitening toothpaste primarily relies on abrasives to help remove surface stains on teeth, according to the ADA. All toothpaste is mildly abrasive to scrub teeth clean, but whitening toothpaste typically contains ingredients that specifically target surface stains, like sodium bicarbonate, also known as baking soda. Whitening toothpaste is a great option to start with if you’ve never used other teeth whitening products since it typically has a lower concentration of active ingredients, experts told us. It tends to work best for surface stains and maintenance after you’ve used another form of whitening, says Messina.
• Whitening strips: Whitening strips are typically coated with a thin layer of hydrogen peroxide or another bleaching agent, and they come in kits with multiple strips for the upper and lower teeth. As directed by the brand, you use the strips for a few days in a row for a set amount of time to gradually whiten your teeth.
• Teeth whitening trays: Teeth whitening trays are similar to whitening strips — they adhere to teeth and whiten using active ingredients while you wear them. Some trays come prefilled, and others need to be filled with a whitening agent before you use them. Dental offices also sometimes make custom trays that fit the exact shape of your mouth to use with whitening gel.

To find the best whitening toothpastes, we personally tested 15 different toothpastes that advertised teeth whitening benefits and evaluated them based on effectiveness, comfort, convenience, and taste . We also interviewed experts to determine what ingredients to look for in a whitening toothpaste. In addition, an orthodontist on our  Medical Expert Board  also reviewed this article for medical and scientific accuracy. At the end of our research and testing period, we scored each toothpaste and compared results to see which ones came out on top.

If you are concerned about ingredients in your toothpaste or wondering about the quality of your toothpaste, looking for the ADA Seal of Acceptance is a great place to start. This seal means that the American Dental Association has extensively researched, tested, and approved the product and that its ingredients are safe to use.

Ingredients to Look for 

Dr. Yost recommends looking for ingredients like hydrogen peroxide, sodium fluoride, and carbamide peroxide , which are known for their ability to remove surface stains. Baking soda and activated charcoal can also help, but they may not be a good match for people with sensitive teeth.

Ingredients to Avoid 

Some ingredients can be harsh or abrasive and might even damage tooth enamel when overused warns Dr. Yost. Sodium lauryl sulfate (SLS) is known to cause irritation for those with sensitive teeth, and ingredients like baking soda, silica, and calcium carbonate should be used sparingly as they can be abrasive. If you try out a new teeth whitening toothpaste and experience tooth and gum pain or sensitivity, it’s worth switching to another product with less aggressive whitening ingredients. 

Results Timeframe

It’s important to remember that whitening toothpastes can take some time to work. In our two-week testing period, we only saw improvements by a shade or two. It can take up to six weeks of regular, daily use to see more dramatic results . Even then, you probably won’t see the kind of change that would result from professional teeth whitening or teeth whitening strips. Dr. Yost also notes that whitening toothpastes won’t be able to whiten intrinsic stains, which affect the inner layer of your teeth.

The flavor is the best we tried among the other teeth-whitening toothpaste on this list. We noticed that it also gave off a slight tingling feeling that left our teeth feeling sparkling clean almost an hour after brushing.

It uses sodium monofluorophosphate , a fluoride compound, as its active ingredient to help whiten teeth. During our testing, we found that this toothpaste effectively removed surface stains and prevented new ones from forming. The texture of the toothpaste was unique compared to other brands we tested; it reminded us of frosting. It also has a fresh peppermint flavor derived from farm-grown peppermint, keeping breath smelling fresh all day.

There are no artificial sweeteners added, so the taste is a bit bitter.

To select the best whitening toothpastes, we knew we had to test them out firsthand.  We tested 15 different toothpastes for two weeks , using each twice per day. Before testing began, we noted the color shade of our teeth on a dental color shade chart. At the end of the testing period, we returned to the testing lab for a final evaluation and a before-and-after color comparison. Our final ratings looked at four unique attributes:

• Effectiveness: We accessed how our teeth felt immediately after the first use and how they looked and felt by the end of the testing period. We noted if there were any noticeable differences in tooth color, sensitivity, or breath freshness.
• Feel: We noted whether applying the toothpaste was straightforward and easy to spread around and the consistency of the lather. We also paid attention to whether the toothpaste caused any increased sensitivity, uncomfortable burning, or tingling.
• Taste: We described the taste and if it was fresh and pleasant or overwhelming, and if it lingered after brushing.

We also spoke to experts to learn how different ingredients affect sensitive teeth and gums. Experts we interviewed include:

• Edmond R. Hewlett , DDS in Los Angeles, California, and professor at UCLA School of Dentistry
• Quinn Yost, DDS, MSD, of Milk Tooth Pediatric Dentistry & Wellness Shoppe in Hermosa Beach, California
• Brittany Ang , DMD, MDS, MBS, of Curve Orthodontics in New Jersey

We tested several different teeth whitening toothpastes to build this list. While the following products didn’t make our list of top picks, we thought they were worth a mention: 

• Moon Anticavity Whitening Toothpaste with Fluoride: This toothpaste almost made the list because of how gentle it was on sensitive teeth and its light, pleasing flavor. It lost a few points because we didn’t notice the same level of color improvement that we saw in our top picks. 
• Opalescence Toothpaste: We enjoyed how well the toothpaste foamed up and left us with a great fresh and clean feeling. We were impressed to see whitening effects after just a few uses, but unfortunately we didn’t see any more improvements during the remaining testing weeks. 
• Sensodyne Pronamel Gentle Whitening Toothpaste: We loved how well this toothpaste improved our breath and left us feeling refreshed. The toothpaste is designed for sensitive teeth, and we can confirm that we didn’t experience any issues with teeth sensitivity. We didn’t care for the flavor, though, and found the gritty texture unpleasant.

Indications and Usage

A dental caries preventive; for twice daily self-applied topical use. PreviDent ® 5000 Ortho Defense ™ 1.1% sodium fluoride toothpaste in a squeeze bottle is easily applied onto a toothbrush. This prescription toothpaste should be used twice daily in place of your regular toothpaste unless otherwise instructed by your dental professional. May be used in areas where drinking water is fluoridated since topical fluoride cannot produce fluorosis. (See WARNINGS for exception.)

Contraindications

Do not use in pediatric patients under age 6 years unless recommended by a dentist or physician.

Prolonged daily ingestion may result in various degrees of dental fluorosis in pediatric patients under age 6 years, especially if the water fluoridation exceeds 0.6 ppm, since younger pediatric patients frequently cannot perform the brushing process without significant swallowing. Use in pediatric patients under age 6 years requires special supervision to prevent repeated swallowing of toothpaste which could cause dental fluorosis. Pediatric patients under age 12 should be supervised in the use of this product. Read directions carefully before using. Keep out of reach of infants and children.

Precautions

General: Not for systemic treatment. DO NOT SWALLOW. Carcinogenesis, Mutagenesis,

Impairment of Fertility: In a study conducted in rodents, no carcinogenesis was found in male and female mice and female rats treated with fluoride at dose levels ranging from 4.1 to 9.1 mg/kg of body weight. Equivocal evidence of carcinogenesis was reported in male rats treated with 2.5 and 4.1 mg/kg of body weight. In a second study, no carcinogenesis was observed in rats, males or females, treated with fluoride up to 11.3 mg/kg of body weight. Epidemiological data provide no credible evidence for an association between fluoride, either naturally occurring or added to drinking water, and risk of human cancer. Fluoride ion is not mutagenic in standard bacterial systems. It has been shown that fluoride ion has potential to induce chromosome aberrations in cultured human and rodent cells at doses much higher than those to which humans are exposed. In vivo data are conflicting. Some studies report chromosome damage in rodents, while other studies using similar protocols report negative results. Potential adverse reproductive effects of fluoride exposure in humans have not been adequately evaluated. Adverse effects on reproduction were reported for rats, mice, fox, and cattle exposed to 100 ppm or greater concentrations of fluoride in their diet or drinking water. Other studies conducted in rats demonstrated that lower concentrations of fluoride (5 mg/kg of body weight) did not result in impaired fertility and reproductive capabilities.

Pregnancy: Teratogenic Effects: Pregnancy Category B. It has been shown that fluoride crosses the placenta of rats, but only 0.01% of the amount administered is incorporated in fetal tissue. Animal studies (rats, mice, rabbits) have shown that fluoride is not a teratogen. Maternal exposure to 12.2 mg fluoride/kg of body weight (rats) or 13.1 mg/kg of body weight (rabbits) did not affect the litter size or fetal weight and did not increase the frequency of skeletal or visceral malformations. There are no adequate and well-controlled studies in pregnant women. However, epidemiological studies conducted in areas with high levels of naturally fluoridated water showed no increase in birth defects. Heavy exposure to fluoride during in utero development may result in skeletal fluorosis which becomes evident in childhood.

Nursing Mothers: It is not known if fluoride is excreted in human milk. However, many drugs are excreted in milk, and caution should be exercised when products containing fluoride are administered to a nursing woman. Reduced milk production was reported in farm-raised fox when the animals were fed a diet containing a high concentration of fluoride (98-137 mg/kg of body weight). No adverse effects on parturition, lactation, or offspring were seen in rats administered fluoride up to 5 mg/kg of body weight.

Pediatric Use: The use of PreviDent ® 5000 Ortho Defense ™ in pediatric age groups 6 to 16 years as a caries preventive is supported by pioneering clinical studies with 1.1% sodium fluoride gels in mouth trays in students age 11 to 14 years conducted by Englander et al.2-4 Safety and effectiveness in pediatric patients below the age of 6 years have not been established. Please refer to the CONTRAINDICATIONS and WARNINGS sections.

Geriatric Use: Of the total number of subjects in clinical studies of 1.1 % (w/v) sodium fluoride, 15 percent were 65 and over, while 1 percent were 75 and over. No overall differences in safety or effectiveness were observed between these subjects and younger subjects, and other reported clinical experience has not identified differences in responses between the elderly and younger patients, but greater sensitivity of some older individuals cannot be ruled out. This drug is known to be substantially excreted by the kidney, and the risk of toxic reactions to this drug may be greater in patients with impaired renal function. Because elderly patients are more likely to have decreased renal function, care should be taken in dose selection, and it may be useful to monitor renal function.5

Adverse Reactions

Allergic reactions and other idiosyncrasies have been rarely reported.

Accidental ingestion of large amounts of fluoride may result in acute burning in the mouth and sore tongue. Nausea, vomiting, and diarrhea may occur soon after ingestion (within 30 minutes) and are accompanied by salivation, hematemesis, and epigastric cramping abdominal pain. These symptoms may persist for 24 hours. If less than 5 mg fluoride/kg body weight (i.e., less than 2.3 mg fluoride/lb body weight) has been ingested, give calcium (e.g., milk) orally to relieve gastrointestinal symptoms and observe for a few hours. If more than 5 mg fluoride/kg body weight (i.e., more than 2.3 mg fluoride/lb body weight) has been ingested, induce vomiting, give orally soluble calcium (e.g., milk, 5% calcium gluconate or calcium lactate solution) and immediately seek medical assistance. For accidental ingestion of more than 15 mg fluoride/kg of body weight (i.e., more than 6.9 mg fluoride/lb body weight), induce vomiting and admit immediately to a hospital facility. A treatment dose (a thin ribbon) of PreviDent ® 5000 Ortho Defense ™ contains approximately 2.5 mg fluoride. A 3.4 FL OZ (100 mL) bottle contains approximately 605 mg fluoride.

Dosage and Administration

Follow these instructions unless otherwise instructed by your dental professional:

• Adults and pediatric patients 6 years of age or older, apply a thin ribbon of PreviDent ® 5000 Ortho Defense ™ to a toothbrush. Brush teeth thoroughly twice daily for two minutes in place of your regular toothpaste.
• After use, adults expectorate. For best results, do not eat, drink, or rinse for 30 minutes. Pediatric patients, age 6-16, expectorate after use and rinse mouth thoroughly.
