Still, the average salary for travel social workers is significantly greater than it is for traditional employees.

While the majority of travel social work jobs prefer candidates to have their Master of Social Work, there are still opportunities for Licensed Bachelor Social Workers.

Additionally, while you should earn a higher pay compared to full-time LBSWs, you won’t earn nearly as much as those with more advanced education.

Travel MSW Jobs

If you want to make more money and have more flexibility, then you should earn your Master’s degree and check out travel MSW jobs.

Most travel social work opportunities require at least an MSW. So, if you want access to more locations, more specialized work, and higher pay, we recommend you go for your MSW as soon as possible.

By advancing your education and skills, you’ll be eligible for travel MSW jobs as diverse as medical social work and school social work.

Travel LCSW Jobs

The best way to maximize your earning potential and job opportunities is to become a Licensed Clinical Social Worker. While becoming a LCSW requires an MSW in addition to thousands of hours of clinical supervision, it’s typically a worthwhile investment.

Travel LCSW jobs are the highest-paying social work opportunities, and you’ll have access to a large pool of job openings.

So, while it may take some time to become an LCSW, the sooner you can earn your credentials, the sooner you can apply to the jobs you want most.

International Social Work Jobs

1. Earn Your Bachelor of Social Work Degree

The first step toward becoming any type of social worker is to earn your Bachelor of Social Work degree. 

While there are Associate of Social Work degree programs, the BSW will prepare you for entry-level social work jobs, as well as future studies in a master’s program. If you hope to become a travel social worker, you’ll need at least your bachelor’s degree.

Your coursework will likely center around three main pillars:

• Theoretical Knowledge: Social work theory, human behavior, social welfare policy, and ethics in social work
• Practical Skills: Case management skills, intervention strategies, community engagement, and advocacy
• Field Education: Hands-on experience in real-world social work settings under supervision

It typically takes about four years of full-time study to earn your BSW. However, you may also opt to take courses part-time, which could add to the time it takes to finish the program.

2. Earn Your Master of Social Work Degree

Once you earn your BSW, we recommend you go straight into a Master or Social Work (MSW) degree program. This is because the quicker you can earn more advanced credentials, the faster you can jump into travel social work.

While some people decide to gain some experience after graduating or become an LBSW, this isn’t typically a requirement to enter an MSW program. The field work you complete in your bachelor’s program should display your readiness to enroll.

Better yet, most BSW graduates have Advanced Standing because of their foundational education and training in their undergraduate program. This means you can typically complete the MSW program in just one-year of full-time study, unlike other students who may take two or more years.

In addition to an internship or field placement, you’ll also take advanced courses focused on specialized areas of social work, like:

• Clinical practice
• Community and social justice work
• Policy practice
• Child and family welfare
• School social work
• Healthcare social work

The specialty you choose can have a big impact on the trajectory of career and available travel social work opportunities. So, be sure to carefully consider which one may suit you best.

3. Pass The ASWB Master’s Exam and Gain Licensure

After completing your MSW program, you must take the ASWB master’s exam . Administered by the Association of Social Work Boards, this test ensures you have the necessary knowledge and skills to practice.

The multiple-choice test covers a broad range of topics, including:

• Assessment and intervention planning
• Human development and behavior

Once you pass the Master’s ASWB, you can apply to become a Licensed Master Social Worker (LMSW). Each state has different guidelines for licensure, so be sure to check your state’s social worker board website.

4. Gain Supervised Clinical Social Work Experience

Now that you’re officially an LMSW, you need to find a job and gain some experience. Once you have a year or two under your belt, you’ll likely qualify for some travel social work jobs.

However, to really open yourself up to a lot of travel social work opportunities, you’ll want to pursue becoming a LCSW.

To do so, you need to complete clinical hours under the supervision of an existing LCSW or similarly qualified mental health professional. The number of required hours varies by state though.

For example, Pennsylvania requires 3,000 clinical hours, while New York requires 2,000 clinical hours. Gaining these hours could take anywhere from one to three years.

5. Pass The ASWB Clinical Exam and Obtain LCSW Licensure

Before you can become an LCSW, you need to pass the ASWB Clinical Exam . 

Like the master’s exam, the clinical exam is a multiple-choice test. It consists of 170 questions, of which 150 are scored and 20 are used to develop future exams. The exam primarily focuses on the areas of clinical:

• Treatment planning
• Intervention

You answer questions covering a wide array of topics, from human development and psychotherapy to case management and ethics.

After passing the exam, you can finally apply for your LCSW license. The specific application requirements vary by state, but generally involve passing the clinical ASWB, background checks, degree verification, and more.

6. Get Additional Certification (Optional)

While not mandatory, social workers can also choose to gain certification in their area of specialty. There are specialization opportunities for both BSWs and MSWs, but some common master’s social work specialties include:

• Certified Clinical Alcohol, Tobacco & Other Drugs Social Worker (C-CATODSW)
• Clinical Social Worker in Gerontology (CSW-G)
• Certified Social Worker in Health Care (C-SWHC)
• Advanced Certified Hospice and Palliative Social Worker (ACHP-SW)
• Certified Advanced Children, Youth, and Family Social Worker (C-ACYFSW)

There are no exams required to become certified, but you will need to complete continuing education credits and thousands of supervised clinical hours in your population focus. You’ll also need an MSW-level license and/or passing score on the master’s ASWB exam.

Overall, getting certified can make you a more desirable candidate when looking for jobs. When it comes to travel social work placements, this could make it easier to find contacts in your most desired locations.

Can You Travel As A Social Worker?

Privacy Overview

What’s it like being a Travel Social Worker?

We talk a lot about our travel nurses but did you know AB Staffing also places travel social workers? We sat down with Jennifer to discuss what her experience has been like working with Indian Health Services as a Clinical Social Worker in Northern Arizona, Montana, and Minnesota. She admits there are pros and cons, but that overall it has been a good experience. She has been able to utilize her education, expand her skills, impact community, and experience new cultures.

Like so many of our medical professionals, the timing was right for Jennifer to take a contract as a travel social worker.

“My husband had lost his job and the position I had at the time was not going to cover all of our expenses. Just after I had gotten my license in the state of Arizona, a recruiter reached out and the opportunity presented was a great fit for our family. I never thought about traveling but now realize I travel to learn things I didn’t know I needed to know.”

Since that time, Jennifer has begun working with AB Staffing recruiter, Norma, who placed her in a contract with Indian Health Services in Northern Arizona.

Not only has Jennifer been able to provide for her family and travel to new places, she was able to put her social work skills and experience into action.

“I have worked in social services for 10 years with experience in schools, mental health, medical, long-term care, home health, crisis, and as a first responder in a fire department. I have a Master’s Degree in Social Work and am currently a Doctor of Social Work candidate. My dissertation focuses on non-tribal clinician’s ethical decision making processes and clinical practices when working with Indigenous populations. I also create 5-minute podcasts about traveling, have hosted a twitter chat for #MacroSW, and am currently writing a feature for the New Social Worker Magazine.”

Jennifer is working at an IHS facility in Montana. While the area is somewhat rural, she says it isn’t as remote as her contract in Northern Arizona.

“We are currently doing summer programming that has a lot of flexibility. We are provided tools and serve the community all summer so that when school is in session, we have already built a rapport with the people.”

The flexibility of working in behavioral settings is what she likes most because there is always an opportunity to learn, grow, and observe. What she likes least is that the weather is heating up and her current home doesn’t have air conditioning.

We asked what advice she would give to social workers considering travel contracts and she said,

“Be flexible. Never assume you know everything. Be open to learning. Travel social workers who are successful are able to work independently, and are highly motivated, and charismatic to a degree.”

If you’re considering working with Indian Health Services, Jennifer offers this advice,

“Similar to accepting a general travel social worker contract, working with IHS is hard work. I recommend not taking work home. It is better to give yourself breaks. Go on adventures. Pick up a new hobby. Stay active. Don’t rely on a standard routine.”

Like so many of our travel medical professionals, Jennifer loves to enjoy the outdoors.

“As a graduate student, I need to find a balance between travel social work jobs , school work, and self-care. I have started hiking in national, state, and provincial parks. Over the Fourth of July weekend, I drove to Calgary and then spent a day in Canmore and Banff. Alberta, Canada is a beautiful place. I highly recommend taking adventures and seeing new places while on assignment.”

The employer has their own curriculum that each teacher will receive upon teaching the corresponding course. All training is provided, and teachers have a lot of freedom to customize the curriculum to suit their teaching styles and their students' learning goals. 

What is the typical class size and age of the students I‘ll be teaching? 

The majority of the classes are one-on-one. The employer also offers small group classes of up to four students. Full-time while working for this employer is 18-27 in-class hours. The classes are generally 3 hours per week, divided into 2 or 3 sessions, so 6-9 courses would be a normal workload. 

Is there any support provided for new teachers? 

Yes! The employer is always available to help teachers with their teaching. During their biannual evaluations, they always give suggestions so that teachers can be the best that they can be. In addition, they offer weekly Spanish classes, and several workshops throughout the year. 

Do I need to learn how to speak Spanish to be successful at this job? 

While speaking Spanish isn’t a requirement, the employer has found that those who either speak Spanish at a decent level or who are dedicated to learning Spanish while in Chile tend to have deeper and more meaningful experiences as they’re able to connect with the Chileans and participate more actively in the local culture. Many of their A1 and A2 students also request teachers who have at least an intermediate level of Spanish, so these teachers may have more opportunities to teach.

Will I have any paid time off built into my contract? 

The employer observes all  Chilean national holidays , so even the office staff gets out on those days. With full-time being 18-27 class hours, teachers have plenty of time to get out, explore the city, and travel. The employer also has a flexible vacation policy so that teachers can get out and enjoy the country while they’re here.

• Both parents or guardians must approve that we can issue a passport to a child, and go with the child to apply in person.
• If one or both parents or guardians cannot apply with their child, you will need to show us more documents.
• You cannot renew your child's passport using Form DS-82.
• Passports for children under age 16 are only valid for 5 years. 

Steps to Apply

1. fill out form ds-11 and print it.

Use our Form Filler tool  to fill out your child's form on a desktop or laptop computer and then print it. If you are experiencing technical issues with the Form Filler, download a PDF . 

Tips to complete your child's form :

• Do not sign your child's form until asked to do so by a passport acceptance agent or employee. 
• You can apply for a passport book , a passport card , or both documents.
• You may ask for a larger passport book with more visa pages, at no extra cost, by checking the 'large book' box at the top of the DS-11.

2. Get Evidence of U.S. Citizenship (and a photocopy)

Your evidence must be an original or replacement copy. The document must have the official seal or stamp of the office which issued it. You must submit one of the following documents for your child:

• Issued by the city, county, or state of birth
• Lists applicant's full name, date of birth, and place of birth
• Lists the parent(s)' full names
• Has the date filed with registrar's office (must be within one year of birth)
• Has the registrar's signature
• Has the seal or stamp of the city, county, or state which issued it
• Consular Report of Birth Abroad or Certification of Birth
• Certificate of Citizenship
• Please note you must also provide a document, such as a birth certificate, that lists the parent(s) or legal guardian(s) of the child. Full validity means the document is or was valid for 10 years for adults and 5 years for children under 16.

Paper only : You cannot submit digital evidence of U.S. citizenship such as a mobile or electronic birth certificate. You must submit physical evidence of U.S. citizenship and a photocopy of the document. 

Returning your child's document : We will return your child's document in a separate mailing up to 8 weeks after you receive the new passport.

Tips for making a photocopy :

• Black and white (no color)
• Use 8.5 inch by 11 inch paper
• Use a single side of the paper

If you do not submit a photocopy, you must submit a second copy of your citizenship evidence. We will keep this copy for our records.

3. Show Your Relationship to Your Child

You must submit a document that lists the parent(s) or legal guardian(s) of the child. Examples include:

• U.S. birth certificate (also evidence of U.S. citizenship)
• Foreign birth certificate
• Adoption decree
• Divorce or custody decree
• A court order

Some documents, like a U.S. birth certificate, show  both  U.S. citizenship and parental relationship. These documents must be originals or certified copies (not photocopies).

You and your child may have different last names, as long as the document showing your relationship to your child lists your full name.

If your name is different than the one on the document showing your relationship to your child, submit proof of your legal name change.

4. Get a Photo ID (and a photocopy)

Both parents or guardians must bring a physical, photo ID and a photocopy of it. If your photo ID is from a different state than the state in which you are applying, bring a second photo ID. 

You must show at least  one  of these photo IDs:

• Valid or expired, undamaged U.S. passport book or passport card 
• In-state, fully valid driver's license or enhanced driver's license with photo
• Certificate of Naturalization 
• Certificate of Citizenship 
• Government employee ID (city, county, state, or federal)
• U.S. military or military dependent ID
• Current (valid) foreign passport
• Matricula Consular (Mexican Consular ID) used by a parent of a U.S. citizen child applicant
• U.S. Permanent Resident Card (Green Card) used by a parent of a U.S. citizen child applicant
• Trusted Traveler IDs (including valid Global Entry, FAST, SENTRI, and NEXUS cards)
• Enhanced Tribal Cards and Native American tribal photo IDs
• In-state, fully-valid learner's permit with photo
• In-state, fully-valid non-driver ID with photo
• Temporary driver's license with photo

5. Show More Documents (if both parents or guardians cannot apply)

• Both parents or guardians must approve that we can issue a passport to a child, and go with the child to apply in person.
• If one or both parents or guardians cannot apply in person with their child, you will need to show more documents.

Important : Submit  Form DS-3053  and other notarized statements within three months of signing them.

6. Provide a Photo

You must provide one photo with your child's application. Go to our  Passport Photo page  for photo requirements and to see examples of photos. 

• Do not attach or staple your child's photo to the form. The acceptance agent or passport employee will review the photo and staple it to your form.
• Some  passport acceptance facilities
• A company which offers photo services
• Home. Ask your friend or family member to take your child's photo. Print it on glossy or matte photo quality paper. 

7. Calculate Fees

When applying using Form DS-11, you will pay two separate fees - an application fee and an execution (acceptance) fee. You will pay the application fee to the U.S. Department of State, and the execution (acceptance) fee to the facility which takes your application. 

• Add $60 to your application fee if you want  expedited service .
• Add $19.53 to your application fee if you want us to ship your completed passport in 1-2 days after we issue it.  

Child Applicants :

*How to fill out your check and pay the application fee to the U.S. Department of State. Please note you must pay a separate execution (acceptance) fee. 

Families may write one check or money order to the U.S. Department of State if they are applying at the same time. The check or money order must include the name and date of birth of each applicant.

8. Find Location to Apply

In the United States:

• Traveling in more than 3 weeks?  Go to a  passport acceptance facility  such as a post office, library, or local government office. Check with the facility to see if you need to make an appointment. 
• Traveling in less than 3 weeks?   Make an appointment  to apply at a passport agency or center.

In another country:

• Contact your  U.S. embassy or consulate .

9. Track Your Application Status

You can  subscribe to email updates  about your application status, and  learn more about each status update .

It may take 2 weeks from the day you apply until your child's application status is “In Process.” 

Frequently Asked Questions

How will you send my child's passport and supporting documents.

You will get multiple mailings. The number of mailings depends on what document(s) you asked for.

Passport Book : You may get your new passport and citizenship documents in two mailings. You may wait 8 weeks after getting your passport before you get a second mailing with your citizenship documents. We will return the passport book using a trackable delivery service.

Passport Card : You may get your new passport card and your citizenship documents in two mailings. You may wait 8 weeks after getting your passport before you get a second mailing with your citizenship documents. We only send the passport card via First Class Mail. We do not send cards using 1-2 day delivery services.

Both a Passport Book and Card : You may get three separate mailings:

• New passport book
• New passport card
• Citizenship documents

Contacting Us : If you have been waiting more than 8 weeks for your documents, call us at  1-877-487-2778  to report that you have not received your documents. 

If you want us to reimburse you for a lost supporting document, you must contact us within 90 days of the date which we mailed your passport. You will also need to provide a receipt to show the cost of replacing the document. 

Can I pay for faster delivery and return shipping?

Yes. You may choose one or both of the following shipment options:

• Delivering application to us : Pay for Priority Mail Express for faster shipping. The price for this service varies depending on the area of the country.
• Returning the passport to you : Pay $19.53 for 1-2 day delivery. This means you will receive your passport   1-2 days after we send it. Include this fee with your check or money order payable to the U.S. Department of State. Do not submit a return envelope to us with postage pre-paid. 

You may receive your passport and supporting documents in separate mailings. If you are renewing a passport card, we will send it to you via First Class Mail. We do not use 1-2 day delivery services if you only applied for a passport card.

What countries require Form DS-3053 "Statement of Consent" to be notarized at an embassy or consulate?

In certain countries, a DS-3053 must be notarized at a  U.S. embassy or consulate  and cannot be notarized by a local notary public. Currently, these countries include:
