Elevate + TravelConnect 2024 recap: Where collaboration and innovation inspired the whole story

The whole story unfolded in the bustling halls of the historic Washington Hilton in Washington, D.C. From April 9 to 11, 2024, two of the travel industry’s biggest events, ATPCO ’s Elevate and Airlines Reporting Corporation (ARC) ’s TravelConnect, came together to drive positive change in the industry.

Elevate + TravelConnect 2024 was more than just a conference. It was an industry-defining convergence of innovation, expertise, and transformation. With a shared goal of redefining the future of travel, more than 700 attendees immersed themselves in insightful discussions and meaningful networking.

An unforgettable lineup of speakers and panelists

What set Elevate + TravelConnect 2024 apart was its impressive lineup of over 90 speakers and an audience primed to explore the travel ecosystem. With each keynote address, panel discussion, and breakout session, we leaned into narratives, trends and strategies shaping the airline industry.

Main stage programming kicked off with Blue Origin’s Kiah Erlich talking about the future of launching commercial space missions and trips to the moon. Also, with a focus on the future, JetBlue Ventures' Amy Burr and later a panel of experts covered AI-driven innovators in airline distribution, revenue, and operations.

Wayne Best, Visa’s chief economist, shared his outlook on the global economy and its impact on the travel industry. We also heard from Vasu Raja, American Airlines’ chief commercial officer, who shared his perspectives on the challenges and opportunities facing the industry.

travel connect address

Attendees learned about real-world new distribution capability (NDC) opportunities from Delta Air Lines’ Sara Reid and AmTrav’s Jeff Klee in a session moderated by Jay Boehmer, editor-in-chief at The Beat. We explored the industry’s evolution from dynamically created offers to future innovations, moderated by Richard Clarke, T2RL’s CEO and founder. We covered ways in which hotels, casinos, and airlines can learn from each other's strategies to create holistic offers, as well as ways different types of travel agencies and travel sellers can prepare for the future.

If you didn’t get change to catch these sessions, select video recordings are available .

Herstory Specialty Lunch

On April 10, the Herstory: Women in Aviation+ specialty lunch brought together women and allies to address the need to support, advocate, and empower women in the aviation industry. The audience had the opportunity to hear from a panel of accomplished leaders from ATPCO, Third Segment, United Airlines, and Venari Partners. Through this conversation, attendees gained valuable perspectives and were encouraged to pursue their aspirations and allyship in the aviation field.

Meaningful breakout sessions

April 11 kicked off with presentations from ZS Associates’ Kunal Shah on how NDC is laying the foundation for a future with personalized offers and ATPCO’s Alex Zoghlin and Tom Gregorson giving an update on the state of dynamic offers.

The conference then offered over 25 breakout sessions divided into five tracks covering distribution and data, creating and distributing offers, presenting offers, payments, and adapting for the future.

The tracks examined how offers are evolving, from traditional methods to innovative new approaches, and they discussed the role of data and AI in airline strategies and fraud prevention. Small groups discussed how to help empower TMCs to embrace NDC and drive industry-wide advancement. Sessions explored the evolving landscape of corporate travel programs and the crucial role of data management in ensuring their success.

ARC shared how its data platform can be used to leverage airline insights, driving more informed commercial outcomes. Panelists from ATPCO presented insights on the latest offer transparency and the industry’s best-kept merchandising tactics.

And the conversations didn't stop there.

Sustainability in travel was a hot topic, with a discussion on how industry members can communicate aviation sustainability options to customers.

Traverse Technologies and their partners provided valuable guidance on enhancing content and transitioning towards direct relationships. The session on 3Victors highlighted the industry's cutting-edge approach to real-time decision-making.

The Payments Forum explored ways to collaborate to improve payment processes and enhance the customer experience while minimizing risks.

Elevate + TravelConnect offered insights into the unfolding industry story as we plot a course presently and into the future. None of this would be possible without the event’s generous sponsors — a sincere thank you to each of them for their contributions to make the conference a success.

Support Our Troops Dashboard

The U.S. Department of Transportation has created a dashboard to ensure that service members and their families have easy access to key enforceable commitments that the largest U.S. carriers provide to current service members and their accompanying spouse and children during personal travel.  A green check mark on the dashboard means an airline has committed to providing that service or amenity to current service members. A red “x” means the airline has not made that commitment.  Airlines may offer benefits to service members that are not reflected on this dashboard, such as complimentary boarding priority.

Commitments for Current Service Members and Families

Please click this link for an alternative text version of the dashboard .  The dashboard is an easy way for consumers to learn about and compare the amenities that U.S. airlines have promised to provide to current service members and their families on personal travel.

Airlines are required to adhere to the promises that they make in their customer service plan, including commitments to care for service members and their families. The Department will hold airlines accountable if they fail to do so.

Frequently Asked Questions

How is “service member” defined for the purposes of the Support Our Troops Dashboard?

  • The U.S. Army, U.S. Navy, U.S. Air Force, U.S. Marines, U.S. Space Force, U.S. Coast Guard, National Guard, and U.S. Military Reserves with a current valid military ID;
  • Cadets of the Air Force Academy, West Point, Naval Academy, Coast Guard Academy, and Merchant Marine Academy with a current valid military ID; and
  • Commissioned Corps and Ready Reserve Corps of the U.S. Public Health Service and Commissioned Officers Corps of the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration’s Officer Corps with current valid military ID.
  • Carriers may add additional categories at their discretion.  Consult the carriers’ customer service plans for more information.

How is "immediate family member" defined for the purposes of the Support Our Troops Dashboard?

  • Airlines may define the term "immediate family member" differently.  For more information on what carriers consider to be immediate family members, consult the carriers’ customer service plans.

Do airlines provide other benefits to service members and their families beyond those mentioned in the Support Our Troops Dashboard?

  • Airlines may offer benefits to service members that are not reflected on this dashboard, such as complimentary boarding priority. To the extent that an airline has not made a clear and enforceable commitment in its customer service plan, the Department may not be able to hold the airline accountable should it fail to adhere to its commitment. Please contact the airline directly for additional information on any other benefits that it may offer.

There are specific things you put into a hotel safe upon arrival, such as passports, wallets, jewelry and other valuables.

But there’s one thing that everyone should store there that wouldn’t naturally cross your mind: a shoe.

A flight attendant named Esther shares travel hacks on her TikTok account, which is where she revealed this “game-changing” insight .

“Worried about forgetting something from your locker?” she wrote. “Put your heel/shoe in it and you won’t forget it!”

The thought process is that you can’t leave the room without wearing shoes since it’s part of your day-to-day wear, so if you leave one shoe in the lockbox, you’ll have to go into the safe and you won’t leave anything else behind that’s in there.

"Worried about forgetting something from your locker?" she wrote. "Put your heel / shoe in it and you won't forget it!""Worried about forgetting something from your locker?" she wrote. "Put your heel / shoe in it and you won't forget it!"

This also works with any vital article of clothing such as a coat.

Esther shared other tips in the same video as well.

For example, if curtains aren’t closing properly, use a clothes hanger with clips to keep the two sides together.

If your world travel plug isn’t working, use a USB cord and charge your device in the TV.

Shower caps also have multiple purposes, such as using them as a cover for your shoes or as a protector for the remote to avoid germs.

Hotel rooms that require using a room key for electricity don’t actually need your key — any card will suffice to keep the power on.

Certain things have become standard for a hotel room - a hair dryer, a coffee maker and in many rooms, there's also a safe. The amenity helps guests keep their passports, cash and other valuables secure, but according to one flight attendant, there is something else you should put in there - a shoe.

Biden-Harris Administration Announces $7.8 Million in Grants to Help Connect People to Health Care and Other Critical Services

The President's Bipartisan Infrastructure Law adds significant funding to transit pilot program

WASHINGTON – The U.S. Department of Transportation's Federal Transit Administration (FTA) today announced $7.8 million for 17 projects that will improve public transportation for people with disabilities, older adults, and low-income individuals. The grants support organizations that coordinate public transportation for underserved groups, allowing them to access healthcare, community services, education, and jobs by building partnerships among health, transportation, and human services providers.

FTA's Innovative Coordinated Access & Mobility (ICAM) Pilot Program – supported by more than $24 million in funding over five years from the President's Bipartisan Infrastructure Law – increases access for Americans all over the country, with a focus on health and wellness. Today's announcement supports transportation improvements, from designing new trip scheduling technology to buying transit vans, in 15 states.

"Transportation is a lifeline that connects Americans to essential services, like health care, and today we're supporting innovative projects to help more people connect to the help they need" said U.S. Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg . "These transportation projects, made possible by President Biden's Bipartisan Infrastructure Law, will help people with disabilities, older adults, and low-income individuals access the health services they need."     By improving the coordination of transportation to critical services for people who have been underserved in the past, the ICAM program supports the Biden-Harris Administration's commitment to improving public health, including mental health. The program provides an opportunity for older adults and people with disabilities and in low-income communities.    "This program supports statewide and regional strategies to help ensure people who are especially challenged in accessing healthcare can reach those critical  services,” said FTA Acting Administrator Veronica Vanterpool . "We are pleased to provide resources that help reach into the sometimes-overlooked areas of our nation to ensure no one is left behind."

Some of the selected projects include:

  • The Illinois Department of Transportation will receive $1.8 million to design and implement an integrated technology system for trip scheduling and fare collection that will facilitate non-emergency medical transportation trips and interagency passenger transfers. The program will integrate technology enhancements to improve mobility for people in 20 rural counties in southern Illinois through Shawnee Mass Transit, Rides Mass Transit, South Central Mass Transit, and Monroe Randolph Mass Transit.
  • The Central Oklahoma Transportation and Parking Authority (EMBARK) will receive $415,900 to support the expansion of the existing coordinated transportation services through the purchase of two vehicles and associated vehicle technology systems. This project will meet the growing transportation demand for older adults, people with disabilities, low-income individuals, and transit-dependent populations with improved access to social services, education programs, workforce development programs, non-emergency medical treatment, and wellness and nutrition services throughout Oklahoma City.
  • The West River Transit Authority (Prairie Hills Transit) in South Dakota will receive $269,280 to buy a contactless payment technology system that will enhance safety, improve reliability and the rider experience, and make transit more accessible to residents in the Black Hills region. A trip planning mobile app and website will help facilitate intercounty connections and regional service by linking riders with providers for trips across multiple service areas. The platform will improve coordination of services for veteran service organizations, education institutions, healthcare facilities, women’s and homeless shelters, home healthcare organizations, and workforce centers.

In response to the Notice of Funding Opportunity (NOFO), FTA received 24 eligible proposals. Projects were selected based on criteria described in the NOFO .

Increased rates coming for travel fees

June 4, 2024

USI has had a long relationship with Enterprise Rent-a-Car and Egencia online booking system (for airfares, etc.). Our pricing with Enterprise has remained the same for over a decade and our booking fees with Egencia have only increased by $1 in the same period. However, these travel partners have experienced cost increases that will result in the following price changes for USI.

Effective June 19, 2024, Egencia’s air transaction fee will increase from $8 to $10 a booking. Additionally, Egencia will introduce a $2 transaction fee on all hotel and car bookings.

Egencia continues to be a preferred travel partner because of its:

  • Access to the most comprehensive and competitive travel options, based on USI’s best practices.
  • Preferred rates at more than 34,000 hotels across 170 countries.
  • Up to 20% savings on top air routes negotiated with Egencia’s airline partners.

Effective July 1, 2024, Enterprise’s daily pricing will increase by $5 to $7 for intermediate and full-size vehicles and $20 for minivans.

Enterprise contracted rates for business rentals means:

  • Rates apply to all U.S. locations and not just local branches.
  • Full insurance coverage and unlimited miles are included.
  • Young renter fee is waived for drivers* between the ages of 21 and 25.
  • Customized web portal for business and leisure reservations.

Some perks for leisure rentals are available as well.

*All drivers for approved business travel, regardless of age, need to become an Authorized Driver with Risk Management.

Highway 93 Henderson construction update

MANKATO, Minn. – Construction on Highway 93 between Henderson and Highway 169 is progressing, according to the Minnesota Department of Transportation.

Weather permitting, pile driving operations are expected to begin sometime next week, for approximately two weeks. Pile driving can create significant noise; therefore, operations will be conducted during daytime hours to minimize disruptions for residents who live near the highway. The work is necessary to install piles that will support a concrete box culvert just south of the levee in Henderson.

Construction on the Highway 93 project has been limited due to the wet spring. However, crews have been able to work on pavement removal, topsoil stripping, initial grading, and rip rap (rock) installation near the Henderson levee. Additionally, progress has been made on tree clearing operations, erosion control, and temporary drainage installation along the highway.

Highway 93 has been closed since April 15 with traffic detoured to Highways 169 and 19. Construction for the project is anticipated to continue through 2026. Schedules are subject to change depending upon weather and other unforeseeable circumstances.  The project includes:

  • Raising Highway 93 approximately eight feet, putting it one foot above historic high-water events
  • Reconstructing 3.6 miles of Highway 93 from Highway 169 to Elm St. in Henderson
  • Replacing the Rush River Bridge
  • Constructing an additional overflow bridge to allow for Rush River flood relief

MnDOT reminds motorists to avoid going around barricades or entering the construction area due to safety.

S.M. Hentges & Sons was awarded the project with a bid of $30,606,833.65.

Alternate travel options to consider if TTC strikes

Strike planned for friday could bring buses, streetcars and subways to a halt.

Social Sharing

Commuters who rely on public transit to get to work, school or elsewhere in Toronto will have to find other ways to get around the city if a public transit strike goes ahead as planned later this week.

  • Head to this story for the latest news about the potential strike by TTC workers

Nearly 12,000 TTC workers could walk off the job  Friday at 12:01 a.m. if negotiations between the transit agency and the Amalgamated Transit Union (ATU) 113 don't produce a new contract — which could disrupt travel plans for tens of thousands of commuters.

ATU Local 113 president Marvin Alfred said there hasn't been enough progress on the union's wage, benefit and job security demands, while TTC spokesperson Stuart Green said a deal is possible as long as the parties remain at the bargaining table.

A strike would mean subways, buses and streetcars won't run, but the Wheel-Trans service for people with disabilities would continue to operate.

If you're one of the people who normally takes public transit in Toronto, here is some information to help you plan ahead.

TTC users talk about their options to get to work if the transit service goes on strike

Other transit systems.

Metrolinx, the provincial transit agency that operates the GO Transit bus and train networks, said in an email it "always has contingency plans in place" in the event of service disruptions.

The agency added that GO trains and the UP Express will continue to operate as normal, and its stations will remain open, but it wouldn't say whether those plans include increasing the frequency of trains and buses.

Durham Region Transit (DRT) said in a news release Tuesday that it "does not anticipate significant impacts to our local transit services," although it is planning to make alternative stop arrangements for its PULSE 900 (Highway 2) and Route 920 services near the Scarborough Town Centre and Centennial College, if required.

"If a disruption occurs, customers who usually transfer to/from TTC services may wish to consider GO Transit options to reach their destinations. DRT does offer connection opportunities to GO Transit train stations and bus stops within Durham Region," the statement said.

  • TTC workers could strike. Here's what they want

Mississauga's MiWay said by email it's also preparing contingency plans for stops it serves that could be affected by a TTC strike, including the Kipling Bus Terminal and Long Branch Bus Loop.

"As part of these plans, we are reviewing possible detour options for routes servicing Kipling Bus Terminal (i.e. Routes 1/1C, 3, 11, 20, 26, 35, 70, 71, 76, 101/101A, 108, & 109) and Long Branch Bus Loop (i.e. Routes 5 & 23)," said Eve Wiggins, director of MiWay Transit, in an email statement.

Kristine Hubbard, operations manager at Beck Taxi, said she expects the company's entire fleet of around 1,300 vehicles to be on the roads. However, she said with demand expected to surge, the company won't be able to guarantee arrival times.

"We'll try to do our best to help, but we are no replacement for TTC," she said.

Beck Taxi has stopped booking scheduled trips for Friday, but customers can still request taxis on-demand by hailing them down on the street, via phone or by using the Beck Taxi app or website .

"We won't forget about you. We won't overcharge you, but pack your patience and if you don't have to go, you know, don't," she said.

A congested city street full of taxis and other vehicles.

Uber Canada said in a statement that if the strike goes ahead it will use surge pricing, which means prices will increase in response to higher demand, although it will put a cap on prices.

The exact price of each fare will be based on factors such as the length of the trip, the amount of traffic in the area and how many riders are requesting rides versus the number of Uber drivers on the road, the company said.

Uber said it will also offer incentives to its drivers to entice them to increase the number of trips available.

It recommends riders also use its "group ride" feature to carpool and split fares with friends, or use UberX Share, which pairs different riders together.

Cycling, walking or driving

Commuters who normally leave their cars at home will likely choose to get behind the wheel and drive to their destinations, which could lead to more congestion than normal .

The Toronto Parking Authority (TPA) said it encourages anyone driving downtown to visit the Green P website for a list of municipally-run parking locations, including those with electric vehicle charging spots.

Where negotiations stand as potential TTC strike looms

Others may choose to ride their own bikes or to rent one.

Bike Share Toronto has more than 9,000 bikes available at 700-plus stations across the city that are available to rent for short trips. Riders can access these bikes by creating an account through the Bike Share website , mobile app  or at a station kiosk. Pricing options include pay-as-you-go, day passes or annual memberships.

Michael Longfield, executive director of advocacy group Cycle Toronto, said the city's network of bike lanes have expanded rapidly over the past few years, particularly since the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic.

"A lot of folks did start dusting their bikes off in the early weeks and months of the pandemic. I'm sure some folks will be tempted to take them out again," Longfield said.

Longfield said it's important to make sure your bike is in working order, so make sure to check the air in your tires, that your brakes work and that your chain is functional and not too rusty.

David Simor, director of the Centre for Active Transportation, said for those whose bikes have been sitting in a garage for the winter or longer, there are lots of bike repair shops to get it fixed up. He also pointed to community bike hubs where cyclists can learn do-it-yourself repairs. The city maintains a list of both here .

A cyclist rides in a bike lane.

Simor pointed to the city's "amazing and under-advertised" multi-use trail and ravine systems .

"It might not be quite as direct as on streets, but certainly very comfortable and really, you know, beautiful and gorgeous to boot at this time of the year," he said.

Finally, Simor said, those who are fortunate to live close to work, grocery stores and other amenities can go for an old-fashioned walk.

"It's actually a really helpful thing for those who need to drive by keeping your car off the road. And also it's great for your mental and physical health," he said.

The airport

Toronto Pearson Airport issued a statement Thursday saying its aware a strike would be a problem for air travellers.

It said some 4,700 people per day use the TTC to get to and from the airport via the 900 Airport Express route that runs from Kipling Station.

It urged those travellers to instead consider the UP Express, taxis or other ride-hailing services or a GO bus (routes 40 and 94 service the airport).

Elementary school students at Toronto's public and Catholic school boards won't attend class Friday due to a scheduled PA Day, but high schools will be open for a regular school day.

The Toronto District School Board told parents and caregivers Wednesday that school buses will operate normally for secondary school students, but warned of possible delays due to increased traffic.

"All other students should explore alternate methods of transportation including carpooling or biking and/or walking in order to get to school," the note said.

"Thank you for your understanding as we all prepare for what could be a challenging time to get around in our city."
