Left Coast Baseball Academy

Travel Teams

Left Coast Baseball Academy’s travel baseball program was created to provide a higher level of competition for talented and motivated Ventura/Los Angeles county baseball players with a commitment to the improvement of their skills in a team focused environment. Teams will work hard to win games, but winning will never become more important than teamwork and good sportsmanship. Left Coast Baseball Academy will ask players to work toward excellence, not perfection. Baseball is a fun and challenging game that requires players to develop the ability to overcome mistakes and to look forward to their next opportunity. Ultimately, the development of skills and team focused play will be the guideline for our program, which we believe will create better baseball players and better people.

Private and Public tryouts are available for ages 8u-14u. Contact Kevin McGuigan at 805-432-6012, RJ Feigenbaum at 805-428-2586, or email us at [email protected] for more information.

At Strike One we realize that every student that walks through our doors is built a little differently (physically, mentally and emotionally), therefore it’s extremely important to be able to tailor our instruction to the student’s make-up to get the best out of that athlete. We teach to the individual and set a baseline for each student based on their first lesson which in turn allows the instructor to plan the course of instruction. It’s extremely important for the student to understand their own strengths and weaknesses, along with understanding their own style. Therefore, in order to teach to the individual we do not teach a specific “style”, but we teach the “absolutes” and base instruction off them.

We feel strongly in our teaching philosophy and believe that providing a positive and fun atmosphere aides in the learning process, while also building self-esteem and a strong positive attitude. Teaching the game is our business and it’s a business we take very seriously. We understand and accept the responsibility of teaching the game the right way and helping the advanced, elite player fulfill their dreams; while taking the youth player and teaching them the basics to build confidence while passing on the passion for the game we love!!!

What our Parent & Players say

Since starting with The Hitters Lab I have seen a tremendous improvement in Kobe’s approach towards the game.  He is much more focused on the fundamentals such as stance, balance, and proper path to the ball.  Kobe was unsure when he started and has clearly grown a passion for the game after working with the coaches.  He now gets excited to better himself and grow as a ballplayer. I would recommend the coaches at Strike One Academy and The Hitters Lab to anyone looking for their kid to play at the next level. .

Braeden’s hitting has greatly improved since beginning his lessons with Coach Kenny.  His confidence at the plate has increased, and he even hit his first HomeRun this past weekend!! His swing and stance is getting better every week we work at The Hitters Lab.

Jason has made baseball so much more enjoyable for my two oldest boys.

New leader at Naval Base Ventura County takes reins during Reagan Library ceremony

U.S. Navy Capt. Robert “Barr" Kimnach III broke with tradition during his final act Friday as commanding officer of Naval Base Ventura County.

Usually, change-of-command ceremonies are held at the base, but Kimnach decided to hold the event at the Ronald Reagan Presidential Library & Museum as his way of thanking the community, said Drew Verbis, public affairs officer for the base.

During Friday's gathering in Simi Valley, Kimnach handed reins to the base's new leader, Capt. Daniel “DB” Brown. The Ventura County base typically gets a new commanding officer every three years or so.

The audience of several hundred in the Presidential Learning Center Auditorium featured a sea of white uniforms worn by sailors and officers. There were also civilians, including local elected officials.

The ceremony featured the five-piece Navy Band Southwest and Naval Base Ventura County color guard.

After the program, some civilian audience members said the Reagan Library auditorium was nicer than the hangar at Point Mugu used for previous ceremonies.

Kimnach, a New England native and naval aviator, said the base takes great pride in its relationship with the community.

“Naval Base Ventura County is the largest employer in Ventura County, with over $5 billion in economic impact,” Kimnach said during his farewell speech.

The outgoing commander's next job will be with the chief of staff for Navy Region Southwest in San Diego.

Other speakers included Rear Adm. Brad Rosen, commander of Navy Region Southwest. Guests of honor included Rear Adm. Keith A. Hash, commander of Naval Air Warfare Center, and U.S. Rep. Julia Brownley, D-Westlake Village, whom Kimnach thanked during his speech for her advocacy for the base.

Brown, a Wisconsin native, most recently served as assistant chief of staff for the U.S. Third Fleet based out of San Diego, said Verbis, the base spokesman.

Brown will now oversee a base staffed by 24,000 civilians and 4,000 active-duty military, which likely will rise to 5,000 active-duty military during the next three years, Verbis said.

The base has 110 tenant commands that don't report to the commanding officer, he added. Naval Base Ventura County includes the Point Mugu and Port Hueneme locations as well as San Nicolas Island.

Brown’s focus will be on improvements to the base’s aging infrastructure, water sustainability, an increase to port usage and base growth, which includes new technologies, Verbis said.

Describing himself as “a man of few words,” Brown made a speech lasting just a few minutes at the Reagan Library. He thanked his parents for supporting his decision to quit a boring office job for the Navy.

“So far, the Navy seems to be working out,” he said.

2 killed in wrong-way crash on Highway 101 in Ventura

Two people were killed on Highway 101 in Ventura early Saturday in a wrong-way crash that closed the northbound freeway for hours.

The wrong-way driver, later identified as a 21-year-old Oxnard man, survived and was believed to be under the influence of alcohol, officials said.

The two men who died were both residents of Santa Barbara in their 50s, according to the California Highway Patrol.

The collision was reported shortly before 2:30 a.m. north of Seaward Avenue.

Multiple callers had reported the wrong-way driver, who was traveling southbound in the northbound lanes near the junction with Highway 33, CHP officials said in a news release.

The wrong-way driver was reportedly speeding in the left "fast" lane at around 80 mph in a 2006 Volkswagen Jetta, callers said.

The final 911 call came when the Jetta was just north of Seaward, where it hit an oncoming 2011 Nissan Versa head-on in the fast lane.

Both men in the Nissan died at the scene. The driver was 55, the CHP reported, and the passenger was 52. Their names were not immediately released pending notification of next of kin.

The Jetta driver complained of knee pain and was treated at Ventura County Medical Center for minor injuries before being booked into county jail. He was arrested on suspicion of gross vehicular manslaughter and felony DUI violations.

Both vehicles had major front-end damage and were towed for evidence.

Northbound freeway lanes were closed at Seaward Avenue until about 7:30 a.m. for the investigation. Ventura Police Department officers assisted with traffic control.

The Jetta driver remained in custody at the county's main jail as of late Saturday afternoon with bail set at $60,000, jail records showed. An initial court hearing has been scheduled for Tuesday afternoon. He had not yet been formally charged by prosecutors.

In December 2021, an Ojai teen was killed along the same stretch of northbound Highway 101 in Ventura by a wrong-way DUI driver around 3 a.m. while the teen was returning home after watching a movie.

CHP officials urged motorists driving in the middle of the night to stick to the two right freeway lanes, saying wrong-way drivers are often in the left lane because they think it's the slow lane.

Separately on Saturday, a minor-injury crash involving a semitrailer and a Ford pickup truck closed eastbound lanes of Highway 126 in Santa Paula for a time. The collision was reported shortly after 2:30 a.m. near the juncture with 10th Street. The big rig's cab apparently rolled over onto its side on a frontage road.

Saturday's crash on Highway 101 remains under investigation. Witnesses or anyone with information are asked to call the CHP's Ventura-area office at 805-662-2640.

This story may be updated.
