Google Flights

Google Flights is a search engine that gathers fares from other travel sites. According to CNET, it bests other travel search sites , due to the fact that it's super speedy (plug in your dates, departure, and arrival destinations, and flights pop up almost instantaneously). If you can be flexible, leave your destination blank and then scroll through the list of cities that pop up to find the cheapest flights for your upcoming dates.

Cheapoair.com

Cheapoair.com is all about discounted flights. Click on its "Last Minute Flights" tab to find the absolute cheapest rates (if you're interested, book it as soon as possible before it goes up!). A recent sweet deal was a roundtrip flight from Philadelphia to Orlando starting at $81 (2 weeks out from departure date). There's also a toll-free number to call to hear about unpublished fares.

Vayama.com focuses on international flights, and there are always good last-minute deals to be found right on the homepage, so you don't have to go clicking around. A recent search saw an American Airlines offer from New York to Casablanca, Morocco, starting at $676 (2 weeks out from departure date). Also, check out its "Trending Deals" section for the most up-to-date offerings.

Last-Minute Hotel Deals

HotelTonight

While this app lets you book up to a week in advance (or 100 days in advance for stays up to 14 nights), it's really geared to last-minute bookings, so if there's a hotel you've had your eye on, this is your chance to stay there at a reduced rate. Deals go live each day at noon, and there are thousands of hotels to choose from, including the Mondrian in Miami. Download for iTunes and Google Play .

Another last-minute hotel-booking app is One:Night, which lists its same-day offers starting at 3 p.m. Though operated by Standard International — the parent company behind Standard Hotels, which are listed already — it also has several other stylish hotels, such as New York's Gramercy Park Hotel and LA's Viceroy L’ermitage Beverly Hills. Download for iTunes and Google Play .

While this last-minute hotel-booking app got its start as a website in England in 1999, it now has access to more than 200,000 properties around the world (but it offers more U.K. hotels than anyone else, including places like London's Radisson Blu Edwardian Grafton and the Hilton Edinburgh Carlton in Scotland). Download for iTunes and Google Play .

LastMinuteTravel.com

With a site called LastMinuteTravel , you can expect prime deals for spur-of-the-moment travelers. The site offers deals on everything from flights and hotels to car rentals and packages, so you're sure to find something. A recent search found a four-star Berlin hotel for $96 per night. Other sites to check out include LastMinute.com and GoLastMinute.com .

Priceline.com

Priceline basically offers one-stop shopping: Not only can you book your hotel room, but your flight, rental car, and cruise as well. It still has the "Name Your Own Price" feature for choosing hotels, which offers steep discounts (if you don't mind not knowing where you'll be staying until you book). Its app has app-only hotel deals, including super last-minute deals with its "Tonight Only" feature.

Expedia allows you to save big when you bundle a trip — meaning book your hotel and airfare together — and often has great last-minute prices, but for its most up-to-the-minute offerings, check the Unreal Deals tab. A recent search turned up a 4-night trip to Vegas, with a stay at The Palazzo tower (within the The Venetian), including airfare, from $605 per person (2 weeks out from departure date).

A recent independent vacation to Milan, featuring airfare, 4 nights of accommodations, and daily breakfast was going for $769 a month out. While there are always good deals on the site, you can also check its "Last Minute" section for the latest offerings.

CheapCaribbean.com

Who doesn't want to save money on a tropical getaway to the Caribbean or Mexico, perhaps places like Aruba and Cancun ? Find all the latest affordable last-minute deals under CheapCaribbean's "Nice Packages" tab — a recent offering for an all-inclusive resort on Mexico's Riviera Maya for 3 nights, including airfare, was going for $599 (down from $1,229) 2 weeks out.

Last-Minute Cruise Deals

CruiseCompete.com

If cruises are your thing — or even if you are a first-timer — you can get quotes from multiple travel agencies to get awesome last-minute deals through CruiseCompete.com . Check its Super Cruise Specials, where a recent deal included a 7-night Mediterranean cruise from Miami, starting at $445 (one month out). You can also get special deals, such as two-for-one cruises and select sailings where kids cruise free.

Under Cruise.com's Last Minute Cruises section (in the Cruise Deals section), you'll find lots of discounted sailings, including a 4-day Western Caribbean cruise from $279 per person departing from Miami, less than a week out. There was also a 4-day Bahamas cruise for $378 per person a month out.

Frequently asked questions

What do i need to know before booking a flight.

There are various factors to consider when booking a flight including cost, fare classes, baggage policies, the complications of flying long haul, and complying with airport regulations. To make your booking journey smoother KAYAK has developed a comprehensive flight guide including insights on finding affordable flights, packing efficiently, and utilizing the best travel tools.

What is the cheapest day of the week to book a flight?

The best day to book your flight depends on a number of factors, but there are general trends that you can follow to increase your chances of cheaper plane tickets. Based on an analysis of KAYAK data for all flights departing from inside United States over the last 12 months, the cheapest day to fly for domestic flights is Wednesday. For international flights, Tuesday had the cheapest tickets on average.

Which month of the year are flight prices lowest?

It’s well established that flights in the low season are generally cheaper than ticket prices during the high season. That means that knowing which month to find the lowest priced plane tickets will depend heavily on seasonality and your destination. While avoiding peak travel times can help you keep costs down, our data shows that the month with the lowest priced plane tickets for domestic flights based on all searches made on KAYAK in the last 12 months was January, while the most expensive was October. If you’re booking an international flight, then January is the cheapest month to fly and December the most expensive.

When is the best time to buy plane tickets - Last minute or in advance?

Last minute flight deals are definitely up for grabs but when exactly to purchase your plane tickets will depend on where you’re traveling to and from. Based on all data for flight searches made on KAYAK over the last 12 months, prices for domestic flights remained below the average price up to 1 weeks before departure. For international flights, deals could still be had up to 1 weeks prior to the departure date, with prices remaining below average. If you’re flexible, KAYAK brings you both advance and last minute one-way and round-trip flight deals.

Can flying international flights with a layover save money on airfare?

For many long-haul international flights, flying non-stop is not possible and you will have to fly with a layover. Some routes will offer both and you could consider flying with a layover for a number of reasons. Firstly, breaking up what would otherwise be a long-haul flight, taking a rest and then completing the journey might make the flight more manageable. Secondly, prices can also be lower than non-stop flights, so while it might take longer for you to reach your destination, you could save money. We’ve looked at prices over the last 12 months for the 100 most popular international destinations for KAYAK users and on average, prices for non-stop flights were cheaper than flights with a layover.

How does KAYAK find such low flight prices?

KAYAK processes over 2 billion flight queries annually and displays results from hundreds of airlines and third party sites, allowing it to find a variety of flight prices and options. It also displays results from 2M+ properties along with rental cars, vacation packages, activities and millions of verified reviews so users can see as many available travel options as possible.

How do I find the best flight deals on KAYAK?

A simple flight search at https://www.kayak.com/flights scans for prices on hundreds of travel sites in seconds. We gather flight deals from across the web and put them in one place. Then on the search results page you can use various filters to compare options for the same flight and easily choose the best flight deal from all of the deals coming straight from the travel sites to your screen, with no extra fee from KAYAK.

How can Hacker Fares save me money?

Hacker Fares allow you to combine one-way tickets on different airlines when it can save you money over a traditional round-trip ticket.

Does KAYAK query more flight providers than competitors?

Yes, KAYAK has access to more data and information than online travel agencies and consistently outperforms the competition in accuracy, globally.

How does KAYAK's flight Price Forecast tool help me choose the right time to buy?

KAYAK's flight Price Forecast tool uses historical data to determine whether the price for a given destination and date is likely to change within 7 days, so travelers know whether to wait or book now.

What is KAYAK's "flexible dates" feature and why should I care?

Sometimes travel dates aren't set in stone. If your preferred travel dates have some wiggle room, flexible dates will show you flights up to 3 days before/after your preferred dates. That way, you can see if leaving a day or two earlier will find you a better deal. You can also select the flexible "weekend" or "month" search options to widen your search range and find the cheapest price that works for you.

Search cheap flights with KAYAK. Search for the cheapest airline tickets for all the top airlines around the world, airports around the world and the top international flight routes . KAYAK searches hundreds of travel sites to help you find cheap airfare and book a flight that suits you best. Since KAYAK searches many plane tickets sites at once, you can find cheap tickets from cheap airlines and for trains and buses quickly.

KAYAK also helps you find the right hotels for your needs.

30 essential travel apps every traveler needs before their next trip

Lori Zaino

When it comes to planning and taking a vacation, travelers rely on their phones now more than ever.

Travel apps are a source of inspiration and are extremely useful for booking and managing logistics — even making restaurant reservations or finding a great fitness class wherever in the world you're flying next.

From apps that help with everything from day-of hotel bookings and last-minute flight changes to those that serve as guidebooks and foreign-language dictionaries, travel is infinitely easier thanks to technology.

Apps can help you navigate a new city, make currency conversions, pack a perfect suitcase and even provide on-the-ground local expertise. Whatever you need when you hit the road, there's an app for that.

We've rounded up the most-loved apps here at TPG. Some may be obvious, and others more obscure, but either way, get ready to download.

Best apps for researching and booking trips

In addition to the apps for the airlines you fly most frequently and your favorite hotel brands, these apps can help you save money on flights and accommodations.

travel apps last minute flights

Hopper has changed in recent years from just offering a price prediction tool for flights to being a true online travel agency. The app helps travelers find the cheapest flights, hotels and rental cars.

Of course, Hopper also still offers its signature price prediction technology to help you plan out when to book, as well as travel protection options and a price freeze to help you lock in the lowest possible price on hotels and flights.

travel apps last minute flights

Kiwi is used mainly to book flights, but it also helps you book hotels (using its partnership with Booking.com) and car rentals (using its partnership with RentalCars.com).

Some of the app's most interesting features include the "Deals" section, which pulls in discounted flights, and the "Travel hacks" section, which includes options for hidden city ticketing, throwaway ticketing (making one-way flights more affordable) and free price alerts.

Hotel Tonight

travel apps last minute flights

A dream for last-minute travelers, Hotel Tonight ( now owned by Airbnb ) lets you book stays for the same evening up to a few months in advance in thousands of cities worldwide. Available hotel rooms are categorized into sections like basic, luxe, hip, charming and solid, so you can select what works for your vibe. Take advantage of the daily drop feature, where you swipe to find a personalized deal with a special price only valid for 15 minutes after unlocked.

At TPG, we love a good loyalty program, and HT Perks, the app's nine-level reward program, is extensive. Not unlike a video game, you "level up" by reaching specific spending thresholds on the app, and you'll gain access to perks like discounts, VIP customer support and credits. Also, your levels never expire, so you can only continue to move up.

travel apps last minute flights

To book home rentals instead of hotels, use the Airbnb app. After entering your destination and dates, you can filter results based on the home type, price, requisite amenities and more. If you find something you like, you can book directly through the app.

The app is ideal for managing your trips while on the road — you can access all your bookings under the "Trips" tab, where you can view your reservation (and the address or directions), contact the host or change your reservation. Once you have a booking, you can also explore and book local experiences in your destination, such as wine tastings, kayak tours, hikes, shows and concerts.

travel apps last minute flights

We can't talk about travel apps without mentioning the TPG App. Use it to track your credit card, airline and hotel points balances; earn points and miles efficiently through using the right credit card ; and research how many points or miles you'll need to book your dream getaway. You can even curate your own news feed so you see the news and advice that matters most to you first.

Flying can cause anxiety — or provide a welcome relief from constant contact with our digital devices. Either way, use travel as an opportunity to relax, meditate or listen to soothing sounds that will lull you to sleep or a deep, relaxed state. Or, perhaps, you'll simply find it helps pass the time during a long flight.

Calm offers meditations on topics such as self-awareness, calming anxiety, breathing, lowering stress levels and happiness, among others. The app also has music options for focusing, relaxing and sleeping, as well as stories for adults and content for kids.

A limited selection of meditations and music is available for free (which you can download to use when you're offline or in flight). The premium version of the app costs $14.99 per month or $69.99 annually.

OK, so Netflix isn't really a travel app, but it can be a lifesaver during a long flight on an aircraft without seatback inflight entertainment or at the airport during an unexpected flight delay or boring layover. If you have a Netflix account, the app allows you to download your favorite shows onto your device to watch offline.

Just make sure to download your shows while connected to Wi-Fi before flying and check them again preflight to make sure they haven't expired (you can usually renew any expired downloads, but you must be connected to Wi-Fi or data to do so). Monthly prices vary depending on the plan.

Another app that's not really a travel app, Spotify can still be incredibly useful during tedious travel moments — just pop in those noise-canceling headphones and listen to your favorite music, meditations, podcasts and more.

The app's Premium plans (prices vary) allow you to download all your content offline on your phone, so you'll have it during long flights or when you don't have data or Wi-Fi access. Whether you want to take a morning jog in Bali to your favorite tunes or pass the time with a podcast on the metro in Barcelona, Spotify has it all.

Best apps to use in your destination

Using this app when traveling means you'll never get stuck wandering around in an unfamiliar area late at night or have to deal with unscrupulous taxi drivers trying to scam you. Uber also has in-app safety features such as an emergency assistance button which will allow you to call local emergency services right in the app.

The best flight apps help you score a deal with a few swipes on your smartphone.

With the help of technology, you may be able to save by booking at the right time, snagging a mistake fare or flying into a different airport.

Key Takeaways

  • Airfare can be one of the most expensive parts of traveling.
  • Apps make it easy to track trends in fare prices, look for deals and book flights.
  • Some apps are completely free to use while others may charge a fee.
  • While some apps charge a fee, there may be a free version available with limited features.

There’s good news for travelers: airfares dropped 5.9% during the past year as of May 2024, according to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics. That means taking that dream vacation may be more attainable now than in the past.

You may be able to save even more by booking at the right time, snagging a mistake fare or flying into a different airport. To find the best deals, you can use an app designed to help people find cheap flights.

The best flight apps offer features that will alert you to price drops, let you search for cheaper travel times or help you find special pricing not found elsewhere.

Try one of these nine discount airfare apps and services that frequent flyers say work for them:

A good flight alert program can simplify the process of finding a deal. These services send emails or notifications whenever there is discounted airfare available to selected destinations, and Going is a favorite source for flight alerts. The company notes that most deals are 40% to 90% off normal prices and says most members save an average of $550 on economy flights.

“(It) is one of the best apps to use when searching for cheap flights,” says Alex Miller, CEO of UpgradedPoints.com. “It can narrow down what city you're located in and then alert you when a qualifying airfare, based on criteria that you set, is found.”

Users can choose from three tiers of service:

Free limited accounts receive alerts about deals on continental U.S. flights.

Premium plans cost $49 a year and include international and domestic economy flights as well as mistake fares and points and miles deals.

Frequent globetrotters may want to spring for the elite plan that provides alerts for economy, business and first-class flights as well as mistake fares from all U.S. airports. It costs $199 per year.

2. Skyscanner

Skyscanner has a free flight app that is compatible with both Apple and Android devices and provides pricing alerts when a good deal becomes available. The app is easy to use and allows you to set alerts for specific dates or routes.

Travelers can also use Skyscanner's calendar and charts to compare hundreds of flights for both international and domestic destinations. The app highlights flights that emit less carbon dioxide into the atmosphere, lets users mix and match flights from different carriers and offers a search option that allows travelers to find the best prices for flights originating from their chosen airports.

When you find a flight you like, Skyscanner will direct you to a third-party booking app to make the purchase. In addition to flights, users can search for hotels and car rentals using Skyscanner.

3. Dollar Flight Club

Dollar Flight Club is similar to Going, but it structures its plans differently.

Free accounts get alerted to deals from one departure airport while premium members can choose four departure airports for deal alerts on domestic and international economy flights. Premium membership costs $69 a year. There is also a Premium Plus+ membership that runs $169 per year and includes premium economy and business class deals as well.

The service says booking a single flight using Dollar Flight Club can provide a return of 10 times your investment and that the average savings on a Premium Plus+ flight deal is more than $700.

4. Google Flights

While not currently available as an app, Google Flights offers a simple online interface that allows you to search for flights to specific airports and then see a calendar view that shows when flights will be cheapest. It also has a price graph that allows you to see pricing trends over time.

“You can plug in your start city and then let Google Flights make suggestions on where to fly from there based upon the cost of airfare,” Miller says. That’s a useful tool for travelers with flexibility.

Once you find the right airfare, you'll need to find and book it directly with the carrier or through a third-party booking service.

The Hopper app comes with a variety of tools that can help you find and lock in the best price. It is free to download and use although some features, such as price freezes and the ability to cancel for any reason, come with a fee. However, its core service is to predict future travel prices, something Hopper says it can do with 95% accuracy.

That’s one reason it’s among the best flight apps, according to Kevin Raposo, founder of KnowTechie. He used it to book a vacation to Saint Lucia and says it couldn’t have been easier. “You can do it all at the push of a button,” he says.

For those just browsing on the app – which is available for Apple and Android devices – Hopper will color code flights using green, yellow and red to indicate which flights are most and least expensive.

Compatible with Android and Apple devices, Kiwi promises its app will provide travelers with exclusive offers and prices. It searches for the best rates from all available airlines to piece together the lowest-priced itinerary.

The free app also offers the opportunity to search for all deals from a specific airport, which can be handy for those who are ready to take a vacation but don't have a particular destination in mind. Within the app, users can get price alerts, access mobile boarding passes and view airport maps.

Kiwi also offers travel hacks that can save money, such as bookings with “hidden cities” and a Nomad tool for those who want to visit multiple cities. What's more, the app offers other travel services such as destination guides and the location of Wi-Fi hotspots.

7. ExpertFlyer

The ExpertFlyer website won’t win any design awards. It looks like something from the early days of the internet and even references now-obsolete Blackberry devices. But frequent flyers say that shouldn’t deter you.

“ExpertFlyer is another great tool, though admittedly it's for the more advanced flyer,” Miller says. “Rather than perform ordinary searches to uncover good airfare deals, you can set alerts and search by specific inventory on flights.”

That means that this service is intended for those who know where, when and with which airline they want to fly. If you have a specific route that you travel frequently, ExpertFlyer can help you find discounted fares.

A free version provides seat alerts while a paid pro subscription, which starts at $4.99 per month, comes with additional features such as the ability to search for awards and upgrades.

Airfare apps aren’t only for those booking vacations. Business travelers and their employers are often searching for a good deal as well. That’s the niche Onriva fills.

“We’ve built a platform to bring everything in one place (so) you don’t have to hop from site to site,” says Onriva founder and CEO Vajid Jafri. “This has never existed before.”

While other apps may make it possible to book from multiple companies, they typically serve as a digital travel agency. With Onriva, all bookings are made directly with an airline or other vendor through the app’s platform, which it says can provide savings of 20%. For added convenience, Onriva also provides customer service.

The app brings together travel options from more than three million suppliers and then uses artificial intelligence to learn user preferences and make recommendations.

Anyone with a business email address can sign up for an Onriva account, but you’ll have to request a demo to get pricing information.

9. Your Favorite Airline’s App

In your search for cheap flights, don’t overlook your favorite airline’s app. Booking direct can sometimes be the best option, according to Sandra McLemore, a travel industry expert and TV host.

“While these (third-party) apps may feel convenient and more user-friendly than other online booking options, buyer beware,” McLemore says. If you buy your tickets through that third-party app, you may find it difficult to receive customer service should any issues arise.

“An airline will send you right back to the app or online booking engine to receive service,” McLemore points out.

Also, by focusing your spending with a specific airline you may find it easier to accumulate frequent flyer miles, which you can redeem for free flights and therefore save more money in the long run.

The 7 Best Websites for Flight Deal Alerts [Don’t Miss Out!]

Table of Contents

Key takeaways, 2. skyscanner, 3. airfarewatchdog, 4. google flights, 6. going (formerly scott’s cheap flights), 7. farecompare, final thoughts.

We may be compensated when you click on product links, such as credit cards, from one or more of our advertising partners. Terms apply to the offers below. See our  Advertising Policy for more about our partners, how we make money, and our rating methodology. Opinions and recommendations are ours alone.

  • Websites like Going and Airfarewatchdog offer real-time alerts for discounted flights, helping travelers save money on airfare.
  • Subscribing to multiple alert services increases the chances of finding the best deals, especially for flexible travelers who can act quickly on short-term offers.

Knowing the right time to purchase a flight can cause some travel anxiety. Of course, you want to buy at just the right time so you can get the best deal — but how in the world are you supposed to know when that is?

Luckily there are lots of websites that can help you out. These websites and mobile apps can keep track of your flights and alert you when the price changes so that you have a better chance at making your purchase at just the right time. Some even offer predictions to help you narrow down the perfect time even more.

Here are our recommended websites and apps that offer flight deal alerts — they’re all easy to set up and they’re (mostly) free .

Kayak has been around for a while and it’s a great tool to use to search for flights, hotels, rental cars, and more . It’s also handy when it comes to setting up flight deal alerts.

To set up a flight alert, you will need to first create an account, then you can turn on flight tracking for any flight search in the upper left-hand corner of your search results window. You may also see a pop-up in the lower right-hand corner allowing you to set up a price alert for the flight you’re searching for.

You can manage all of your flight deal alerts on Kayak by going to the Notifications section of your account.

One of the cool things about Skyscanner alerts is that you can set them up going to and from multiple airports. This can be helpful if you are in a place like New York City where you have easy access to more than 1 airport. Just be sure to select Add Nearby Airports right under your departure and arrival cities.

  • To set up a price alert, go to Skyscanner and sign in or create an account if you haven’t already. Then input your departure city and destination, and click on Search Flights . If you want to set up an alert that covers multiple airports, click the box below each city that says Add Nearby Airports .

Search multiple airports on Skyscanner

  • Next, click on Get Price Alerts in the upper left-hand corner. That’s it — your flight alert is set!

  • To edit or delete any alerts you have created, simply click on My Account in the upper right-hand corner. Then click on Price Alerts to edit.

The first thing you’ll notice is that you have to sign up with Facebook or an email address before you can access Airfarewatchdog .

Once you’re in, you’ll see that this site looks like a lot of other sites — you can search for deals on flights, hotels, and more.

When you’re logged in, setting up an alert can be done in 2 ways. First, you can search for a flight and then check the box to add that flight to your alerts.

Track flight prices on Airfare Watchdog

Another option is to click on My Alerts > See My Alerts in the upper right-hand corner of the screen. From there you can set up alerts about flights from your home airport, alerts about specific routes, and even hotel alerts. This is also where you can manage all of your active flight deal alerts.

Manage flight deal alerts on Airfarewatchdog

That’s it! Now, your alert will be saved in your account and you’ll receive an email when there are good deals available. You can also easily unsubscribe from your alerts or put them on hold.

Airfarewatchdog is not a booking site, so when you see a flight you want to book, you’ll be directed to an online travel agency (like Priceline or Expedia ) to finalize your booking.

Hot Tip: Traveling soon? Check out these websites and apps for finding last-minute travel deals .

Google Flights is a popular way to search for the best flight deals. The site is easy to use and offers lots of features that make searching for a flight a breeze.

It’s easy to set up flight deal alerts on Google Flights — all you need to do is enter your search criteria and click on the toggle button that says Track prices above your search results list to get price alerts and travel tips by email. You’ll be able to get alerts for your specific travel dates or for any dates.

Set up a flight deal alert on Google Flights

If you’re logged into Google, your alerts will automatically go to your Gmail address, otherwise, you will need to enter an email address.

To check on all of your tracked flights, click on the 3-line icon in the upper left-hand corner. Then click on Tracked flight prices . Here you’ll be able to see a graph of the flight prices since the day you set your alert.

Hopper is a mobile app that gives predictions to help you find the best time to book your flight. It’s so confident in its app, it claims 95% accuracy up to 1 year in advance!

You can view flights on the Hopper app without signing in, but you must create an account to set up an alert.

To set up an alert you first need to search for the flight you are interested in. Then, you’ll be able to watch when prices drop and you’ll get an alert if Hopper predicts that they are going to rise.

To set up a price alert, open the Hopper app and select Flights. Then input your destination and dates of travel. Then you’ll see Hopper’s prediction along with a button that will turn on flight notifications. You have to enable push notifications on your phone to receive alerts .

Hopper flight alerts

Going uniquely monitors the best flight deals from your home airport. So instead of choosing a specific flight to follow, you’ll select your home airport. The site will also recommend nearby and hub airports to follow for even more deals.

Going screenshot home airports

There are both free and paid memberships. While the free version will send you deals, it doesn’t include serious savings like mistake fares and cheap business class flights. Paid memberships cost either $49 or $199 per year.

Once you have signed up, you’ll see deals from the airports you selected. Click on any deal for more information including how long Going thinks the deal will last.

Hot Tip: Keep in mind that some airlines (mostly “low-cost carriers”) don’t show up on these online travel agencies, metasearch engines, or flight deal sites. If you often fly these airlines (think Southwest or Allegiant ), you’ll want to keep an eye on those flights on their respective websites.

FareCompare is another site that will send you flight deal alerts. Unfortunately, you’ll also get emails with travel tips. If you prefer to keep your inbox clean, this might be a deal-breaker.

To set up a flight deal alert on FareCompare, just enter your travel details, and be sure to click the box right underneath that says Alert me when prices change . When you click Find Flights you’ll be prompted to enter your email address if you aren’t already signed in.

FareCompare flight alerts

FareCompare is a flight search engine, so if you find a flight you like you’ll be transferred to an online travel agency to complete your booking.

No one ever really knows the exact right time to purchase a plane ticket to save the most money. Unfortunately, there’s not a tried and true formula for the best time to buy a flight, but there are lots of sites out there that can help narrow down the window. When you keep track of the flights you are after, you’ll be able to keep tabs on price trends which will help you decide a good time to buy.

You can set up a flight deal alert so you’ll be notified right away if there is a change in price, and some sites even alert you when they are predicting prices will rise or fall.

While setting up a flight deal alert isn’t a guarantee you’ll save money, it sure does help to make an educated guess on when to book your next flight.

You’ve spent all week looking at #vanlife pictures at work and now you simply have to get out of town. The beach would be great, but you’ll take the mountains. Or the city. Really, anywhere but here. It’s time to let that tiny computer in your pocket do the work for you. In recent years, last-minute travel apps have become a thing, with developers aggregating data to offer flash deals on everything from flights to theater tickets. We found seven apps that will help you satisfy your spontaneous wanderlust. Get your “go” bag ready. You’re going places. Tonight.

Best If: You have a specific destination in mind, but are flexible on dates.

This app crunches data to figure out when you should book a flight to score the cheapest ticket. Fill in the destination and Hopper presents you with a calendar that breaks down the various price options over the next six months. I searched for JFK and found a handful of $400 round-trip flights for the following week. The app will tell you if the price is expected to rise or drop so you know if you should buy now or hold out. If you’re flying to a city with multiple airports, Hopper will even tell you if there’s a cheaper ticket at a different airport.

Free; available for iPhone and Android.

Best If: You just need to get out of town, quick.

Fareness works similar to Hopper. Type in your home airport and where you want to go, and then the site presents you with round-trip prices for the next two months. But it works best if you’re open-minded about your destination. Let’s say you have a three-day weekend coming up. You’ll set the dates and Fareness will show you a range of options. I used my home airport as a base, and discovered I could fly to Las Vegas, San Diego, New York, DC, all for less than $500 from a midsize airport on the East Coast.

Free; iPhone only.

GTFO, Get the Flight Out

Best If: You just got paid and you just broke up with your girlfriend.

Developed by the same folks that brought you Hopper, GTFO is truly for the spontaneous. Enter your home airport and GTFO gives you the prices for a range of flights leaving from your airport tonight through tomorrow morning. We found round-trip, non-stop tickets to Miami for $176 (taxes included) that left in six hours.

Free; available for iPhone and Android.

Hotel Tonight

Best If: You’re on a road trip but forgot to plan ahead, or are looking for a spontaneous weekend getaway.

This is the app that started the same day travel revolution. With Hotel Tonight , you can book last-minute, same day hotel rooms all over the world at up to 70 percent off the typical cost of the room. We found deep discounts on a variety of hotels in a number of cities. And you can go down to the wire: you can book your room as late as 2 a.m. on the night of your arrival.

Best If: You’re exploring your own hometown or looking for suggestions in a new destination.

This is a map-based app that shows you the travel deals that are close to you, from hotels to discounted dinner. I found a room at a new hotel I’ve been wanting to check out for $100 off the regular price in my hometown, then scrolled through the map to Atlanta and found discount symphony tickets, 50 percent off museum tickets, and $100 off a boutique hotel. You can search the week’s top deals to find deep discounts on package vacations. It even has deals right now on guided trips in our national parks.

Free; Available for Apple and Android.

Secret Escapes

Best If: You’re just looking to get away to some place sunny.

Use this site  to search discounted rooms at boutique hotels around the world. Most of the deals we found were 30 percent off the regular room rate, with options everywhere from Telluride to Tortuga Bay. You can browse the flash sales, or enter specific dates or a destination to see what’s available. It feels a little bit like Groupon, with a bunch of resort options that can feel overwhelming if you’re not sure what you’re looking for. But if you’re not super spontaneous, you’ll appreciate the “Upcoming Sales” feature, which lets you know about deals that will be available in the near future.

Free; requires registration; web only.

Best If: You want to plan a complete vacation at the last minute on one app.

Hipmunk combines a lot of your travel needs into one seamless package. Enter your home airport and you’ll get a list of flight deals to suggested cities. You can also enter your favorite cities and Hipmunk will alert you when a deal pops up. Hipmunk even lets you compare flights on other sites like Orbitz and Travelocity so you know you’re getting the best deal. It offers the same service with hotels, so you can search for hotel room deals and compare them with AirBnB deals for the same night.

Free; Available for iPhone and Android.

Never use this agency

NEVER EVER use this agency. If I could give them 0 stars I would. I was scheduled to fly out of JFK to CDG on the 31st of august. When I originally bought the ticket the flight was scheduled to depart at 9pm, I live in Philly so I bought my bus ticket believing the flight was still 9pm because that was what was on the agency’s website. However, as I was on the bus on my way to New York I checked in with the airline and they had switched the flight to 5pm instead and I wasn’t scheduled to arrive to New York until 3:30pm. So impossible to make the flight. I called the agency and they told me they never received a notification. I then called the airline and they showed me proof that they sent the notification out on July 14th at 2pm. The agency never updated. I called back the agency and they were unwilling to help me, unwilling to let me speak with a manager, and kept telling me to call the airline instead. In the end I ended up spending an extra $1200 for another flight. Please avoid these guys. They are scammers.

WORST TRAVEL APP/COMPANY EVER!!!

PLEASE DO NOT USE THEIR SERVICES! I bought 3 tickets to Morocco and was over charged, so my bank corrected the amount only to find out that the ticket was canceled with no warning until I was ready to check in for my flight at the airport. I’ve been going back and forth for months on getting a voucher or my money back and they did not take responsibility at all. THIS IS SCAMMING. They stole $3k of my hard earned dollars with no explanation even after I sent proof from my bank to their customer support. If you continue to use their services after numerous of horrible reviews then that’s on you. I’ve learned my lesson and pray no one get their money stolen like this company stole mines!

As of Thursday night, no nonstop flights in and out of Eppley Airfield had been directly impacted by Hurricane Helene, but some travelers said they had to make last-minute adjustments to avoid being caught in the storm.

One couple told KETV they just moved to Florida two weeks ago from the Omaha area, but they had plans to return to the metro this weekend for a family member's birthday.

"With the hurricane, we were supposed to fly out, and with that, we wanted to move our airline fare so that we could fly out earlier," said Renee Woehrer, whose travel impacted. "We could not get a flight out of Orlando, and so we decided to drive."

Woehrer said it took them nearly three hours to reach the interstate on the north side of Orlando due to rush hour traffic and people evacuating Florida. From there, she said they drove for 10 hours into Georgia.

"We got in about three in the morning," Woehrer said. "Then we woke up early. We were on the road by about 7. We drove over to the Birmingham airport, and so then we flew out of Birmingham."

The couple said they had to avoid any flights that routed through Atlanta because flights kept getting cancelled, so they finally found a flight that left Birmingham, flew to Texas and finally to Omaha.

"Really tired," Woehrer said. "And I wouldn't miss my mom's 80th birthday for the world. And she's so happy. We've been texting her along the way, calling her, and she's so excited."

The couple said they did their best to protect and prepare their house before they left and are just hoping for the best possible outcome when they return.

"I'm really glad that, you know, we decided to drive just to make sure that we could make it out of Florida," Woehrer said. "We're just really praying. We've been watching the storm development today. We're just really praying for all that are indirectly in the way."

Eppley officials said they encourage anyone traveling during this time to continue to check in with their airline for their flight status, as flights could be affected in connecting cities due to the hurricane.
