Getting Around Zürich: Guide to Public Transportation

tourist zurich tram map

TripSavvy /  Catherine Song

Zürich, the largest city in Switzerland, has a highly efficient public transportation system to help residents and visitors get around the city and its suburbs. Composed of Zürich's iconic trams—as well as buses, trains, and boats jetting around Lake Zürich—the comprehensive network connects virtually all parts of the city and is particularly handy and easy for visitors to use.

Travelers to Zürich should keep in mind first and foremost that Zürich is a highly walkable city. The city center is flat, and most principal sights are only a 10- to 20-minute walk from one another. However, if you're flying into Zürich Airport, arriving at the main train station with a lot of luggage, visiting attractions on the periphery of the city, or if you have reduced mobility, the system is there to whisk you around with ease.

TripSavvy / Michela Sieman

How to Ride the Tram in Zürich

Run by the Zurich Transport Network (ZVV) , trams are the most prevalent form of public transportation in Zürich. Electric trams have rumbled through the streets of the city since the late 1800s. Today, there are 15 tram routes and more than 300 trams plying 172 kilometers (107 miles) of track, supplemented by a bus system that carries users where trams don't go. In the city center, you'll find tram or bus stops an average of 300 meters (about 980 feet) apart. The system is divided into zones, with the heart of the city—including Zürich Hauptbahnhof (the main train station) and the Altstadt (Old Town)—lying in Zone 110.

To find the tram you need, consult the Zone 110 (central Zürich) tram and bus map . Lines numbered 2 to 17 are trams; those numbered 31 to 916 are buses. If you can manage in German (or use a translate option on your laptop or phone), you can search for routes on the ZVV mobile app .

Tram and bus stops are clearly signposted, with route numbers listed. Trams going in different directions on the same route will stop on opposite sides of the street or tram platform. If you're not sure which direction you need to go, check the list of stops (posted at the tram stop) the tram will make. Some tram stops have digital boards displaying the next arriving trams and their arrival times, while other stops will have printed displays of trams, stops, and frequency.

  • Single-Ride Tickets: Prices depend on how many zones you plan to travel through. Tickets for those traveling within two zones of 110 will cost 4.40 Swiss francs (about $4.50) and are good for one hour, with transfers permitted.
  • Passes: Like single-ride tickets, prices depend on where you're traveling. 24-hour passes within two adjacent zones cost 8.80 Swiss francs ($9.70). These are a good option if you plan to do a lot of sightseeing in a day and don't want to mess with buying a ticket every time you need to hop on a tram. The 9 o'clock day pass is good for all zones from 9 a.m. to 5 a.m. the next day, and costs 26.00 Swiss francs ($28.70).
  • Zürich Card : Passengers with this card benefit from unlimited travel on trams, buses, trains, boats, and cablecars in the city and surrounding areas. The card is currently priced at 27 Swiss francs ($29) for 24 hours or 53 Swiss francs ($55) for 72 hours.
  • Where to Buy Tickets and Passes: Users can purchase their tickets and plan their routes on the ZVV mobile app , though it is only available in German. ZVV Ticket machines are posted at all tram and bus stops and inside train stations, and you can select to use them in German, English, French, or Italian. Machines distribute all ZVV ticket and pass types and accept touch-less chip credit cards, standard debit and credit cards, and cash and coins.
  • Hours of Operation: ZVV Trams and buses run from 5 a.m. to about 12:30 a.m. every day of the week. On Friday and Saturday, a late-night train service runs between 1 a.m. and 5 a.m., but with a reduced schedule. To ride one of the night trains (labeled N on schedules and stops), you'll need a regular ZVV ticket and a supplementary ticket; it costs 5 Swiss francs ($5.53) and can be purchased at the stop or station.
  • How to Board: Single tickets and Day Cards bought at the tram stop do not need to be validated before boarding, as they are already stamped with date and time. Multi-day passes, Zürich Cards, and multi-zone passes all need to be validated (stamped) in a ticket machine before boarding the tram.
  • Accessibility : Persons in wheelchairs or with reduced mobility will find wheelchair-friendly trams or step-less access on all trams, with the exceptions of lines 5 and 15. Wheelchair users should enter/exit through the third door from the front of the tram. ZVV advises slow walkers or those with other mobility impairments to stay near the front of the tram, where the driver can see you and allow more time for you to exit.

Riding the Train

Zürich's trams and buses are augmented by trains run by the SBB , the national railway. Train tickets for S-Bahn, InterCity (IC), and Inter-Regional (IR) trains can be purchased at ZVV tram ticket machines. These trains connect parts of Zürich not served by trams, particularly outlying bedroom communities and recreational areas such as Uetliberg. When you search for a route on the ZVV app or website, the results may include trams, buses, or trains—whichever is the most timely and efficient method to get you where you need to go.

Other Transit Options in Zürich

  • Boat: From April to October, boat rides on Lake Zürich and the Limmat River are offered by ZSG ( Lake Zürich Navigation Company ) in partnership with ZVV. Cruises on the lake start from 8.80 Swiss francs ($9), which amounts to the cost of a 3-zone ZVV ticket. For more information on prices and schedules, see the ZSG timetable .
  • Taxis: Cabs in Zürich are readily available but expensive. Given the city's efficient public transportation system, you might find little need to call a taxi, unless it's late at night and you don't feel like waiting for a night train. If you're heading to the airport with a lot of luggage, then calling a taxi might be your most convenient option.
  • Electric scooters: Scooter-share programs are offered by several different companies, including Circ, Bird, and Lime. Choose the one you like, download the app, and sign up with a credit card. All of the apps show you the location(s) of the nearest available scooter. When you're done using it, park it and go.
  • Car rentals: If you're touring Switzerland in a rental car , we suggest you park it upon arrival in Zürich and don't use it until you're ready to leave the city. Confirm in advance that your hotel has parking—otherwise, parking in the city is both very limited and very expensive.

Getting to the Airport

A ticket from Zürich Hauptbahnhof (Zone 110) to Zürich Airport (Zone 121) costs 6.80 Swiss francs (about $7.50) for either a tram or train ride. Trains are run by the Swiss Federal Railways (SBB) and it takes between 8-12 minutes to get to the airport, while trams take 30-35 minutes.

Tips for Getting Around Zürich

  • When boarding the tram, wait for riders to exit before getting on. When riding, keep an eye on the stops so you'll be ready to exit quickly.
  • This is Switzerland, so if the display says the tram will arrive at 11:05, it will arrive at 11:05.
  • The Zürich Card entitles travelers to free or reduced admission to dozens of area museums, plus a discounted walking tour and a cruise on the Limmat River.
  • Holders of the Swiss Travel Pass , good throughout Switzerland, can ride all of Zürich's public transportation free of charge.

Zurich Public Transportation Guide

Train station with red swiss trains arriving

I can be a little obsessive when it comes to researching local transportation. That’s because seamlessly navigating public transportation in a foreign city makes me feel like a local! When it comes to Zurich public transportation I decided I needed to write up a dedicated guide to cover it all because I’m not gonna lie… it’s a little complicated. But if you review all the details now, then you won’t be confused when you get there!

I also wanted to thank Sarah at How to Switzerland for her awesome video How to Take Public Transportation (Train, Tram & Bus in Zurich) . This video inspired this guide and helped me feel a lot more confident about our future trip to Zurich!

Public Transportation in Zurich

In this post, we’ll be discussing ZVV, which stands for Zürcher Verkehrsverbund, or Zürich Transport Network. ZVV is for local transportation within Zurich. If you’re looking to travel outside of Zurich, or from Zurich to a different city in Switzerland, that would be SBB. I’m not covering SBB in this post, but if you’re interested, let me know and I can go over all the details!

To Keep Things Simple

If all of this overwhelms you, I just want to say up front that there are two things to remember:

  • Use the SBB app to purchase your ZVV tickets. You put in your starting point and your destination, and the app will tell you how much your ticket costs, which zones it’s valid for, and how long it is valid. The ticket is stored on the app, and you’re good to start riding! I have a guide all about using the app here .
  • Zurich is not a big city. If you’re staying downtown, you might just be able to walk somewhere and avoid public transportation altogether. I usually use google maps to determine how far it is to walk somewhere and base the decision on how tired I am at that moment!

Types of Tickets

The ticket system in Zurich is a bit complex if you’re new to the area. That’s because it uses a Zone System. This means that instead of buying a ticket from A to B, you purchase a ticket for X hours, which allows travel across Y zones. If that’s confusing, that’s okay! I’ll get into the details. But let’s start with the basics!

There are three types of basic tickets in Zurich:

If you’re just traveling around the city center of Zurich, you don’t have to worry about zones. You can purchase any of the above tickets and be fine traveling in zone 110. But if you intend to travel outside of zone 110 (maybe a day trip to Uetliberg ?) you will need to purchase an extension.

Extending your Ticket

When you purchase your ticket, if you know that you’ll be traveling outside of your single zone, you can extend your base ticket to allow travel through more zones. For the single ticket, it also extends the time:

For the 24-hour ticket, the valid time doesn’t change – just the zones!

For a deeper understanding of the zones, check out the ZVV’s zone maps which show exactly which stations are in each zone.

1st Class vs 2nd Class

You might have noticed that I provided prices for both 1st and 2nd class tickets. In the ZVV network, 2nd class is your “standard” class and should be perfectly adequate for most travelers.

Trains and some boats do offer a 1st class option that provides a bit more space, larger windows, and usually less people. Considering that 1st class is so much more expensive than the already fairly pricey 2nd class, I wouldn’t recommend it when traveling throughout Zurich.

If you do decide that 1st class is for you, be aware that even if you purchase a 1st class ticket, there may not be a 1st class section available on all forms of transportation. For example, you wouldn’t want to pay for a 1st class ticket when you’re taking the bus or tram; the bus/tram doesn’t have a 1st class section! But since it’s the same ticket to ride a tram or a train, it’s on you the customer to know what you plan to do with your ticket.

Ticket Discounts

As you might have noticed from the tables above, Swiss public transportation is expensive! But they do have some ways to make it more affordable!

9 O’Clock Ticket

If you’re not an early bird, you can be rewarded with a 25% discount! ZVV offers a special 1-day non-commuter ticket that is available for use in all zones. If it’s a weekday, the ticket is valid from 9am to 5am the following day. If you purchase the ticket for a weekend, it’s valid for all hours. It’s 26 CHF for 2nd class and 42.80 CHF for 1st class.

Unlike other standard tickets, you must validate the 9 O’Clock ticket at a ticket machine before each use. For more information about the 9 O’Clock ticket, check out the ZVV page .

Zurich Card

The Zurich card is a tourism card that provides a discount at Zurich museums along with unlimited travel throughout most of Zurich. The card is availble for 1-day or for 3-days:

If you plan to visit any of Zurich’s museums or travel outside of downtown then you should consider the Zurich Card. For more details on which museums are discounted, along with a map of the exact travel zones provided, check out the ZVV Zurich Card page .

Albis 24h Ticket

The Albis Ticket is good option if you’re planning a hike outside of downtown Zurich but aren’t interested in the benefits of the Zurich Card. The validity areas are a bit more restrictive but perfect for a hike to Uetliberg, along with other nearby hikes. It covers 6 zones for the price of 4 and is valid for 24-hours from purchase. For the exact map of which zones are covered, see the ZVV’s Albis Ticket page .

Half-Fare Card

The SBB Half-Fare card provides a deep discount on most transportation throughout Switzerland, including ~50% off on SBB trains throughout Switzerland and a discount on ZVV tickets! The discount is not always 50%, but it is often significant.

The half-fare card is the standard for locals – everyone has one! It’s so normal that when you go to buy tickets the price is often listed as if you are going to use a half-fare card. When you purchase your tickets, you will have the opportunity to indicate if you have the half-fare card or not, which will allow you to keep the discount. If you don’t have a half-fare card, the price will be updated to the full rate. Note: prices listed above DO NOT assume the half-fare rate. Therefore if you buy the half-fare card all those prices would be discounted!

If you’re only traveling within Zurich, this card probably isn’t worth it. But if you’re going to be in Switzerland for an extended period of time, or if you’re going to be doing a lot of travel through Switzerland as a whole, buying a half-fare card might worth the money!

For more information about the Half-fare card, check out the SBB site . Also, be aware that there is a slightly different half-fare card available for locals. You’re getting the monthly half-fare card for international guests.

Purchasing Your Ticket

The easiest way to handle your tickets is probably via the SBB app on your phone, but I’ll also go over how to do it via in-person ticket machines as well! For a full guide on how to use the SBB app to purchase tickets, check out my guide: SBB App: How to purchase train tickets in Switzerland .

Ticket Machines

  • Ticket machines are available at nearly every transportation stop/station/center. There may be some rural destinations where you have to purchase your ticket ahead of time or via the app. Once you’ve found the ticket station, approach the kiosk and tap the screen to start the prompts.
  • Select English at the bottom of the screen (or your language of choice)
  • Select your destination station.
  • Choose via direct . This means that you don’t want to get to your destination via a certain route, you just want to get there in the most direct way.
  • Select 1 hour or 24 hour .
  • Select 1st Class or 2nd Class .
  • Lastly, select the number of people you want to purchase tickets for, both adults and children.
  • Click the Next button. There will be a summary of your purchase. Go ahead and make your payment, and your ticket will be printed!

Using Your Ticket

tourist zurich tram map

Zurich uses the honor system for local transportation, meaning that you don’t actually need to validate your ticket before getting onto public transportation. Just having the ticket is good enough. However, don’t think that this means you can just skip the ticket altogether! There are ticket inspectors who might board your vehicle and ask everyone to show their ticket. If you don’t have a ticket, or if you have the wrong one, you will be fined!

Some other things to keep in mind when using public transportation in Zurich:

  • You always buy your ticket BEFORE getting on your train/tram/bus/boat of choice.
  • ZVV tickets in Zurich are valid on trains, trams, buses, and boats. That means that as long as you’re in a valid zone, you don’t need a new ticket when you change your type of transportation.
  • Switzerland is a rule-following culture, so it’s important to get the correct tickets for your zones. remember, if you’re ever confused, you can just type in your starting and ending points into the SBB app, and it will tell you which ticket you need to purchase!

Using the Train

Trains in Zurich are great because they’re fast, clean, and on time! They come less often than trams, but often enough where you shouldn’t have to wait too long.

If you are not used to navigating train stations, I find that they can be a bit overwhelming. We don’t have trains in Seattle, so it always takes me a bit to get used to them when I visit a city with trains.

When you arrive at a train station you will have to determine which track your train will be arriving at. If you purchased a specific ticket through the app, you should already know which track you need. But if you have a daypass and are just showing up, I recommend pulling your route up on Google Maps to figure out the track. Additionally, there will be a schedule at the train station that indicates which trains are going to which track.

tourist zurich tram map

Once you determine which track you need, follow signs to find your train track. Once you arrive at your track, you’ll see signs indicating which platform to stand at along the track. Find the platform that indicates your train number, and stand at the appropriate section. I always find this part a little confusing, so I recommend you check out How to Switzerland’s YouTube video How To Take Public Transportation for more visuals about this. Once you do it a few times it will all make sense!

When your train arrives press the green button on the door, enter the train and find your seat! Many trains will have a screen indicating the next stop, and there may also be announcements. When you arrive at your stop press the green button on the door again to leave the train.

Using Trams and Buses

Using trams/buses in Zurich is very similar to trains. You find the appropriate stop, and wait for the tram/bus. Press the green button to open the doors and board the tram/bus.

Once you’re on the tram/bus, wait for your stop. There may be electric signs indicating the next stop, and there also may be announcements. When your stop is coming up, press the buttons distributed around the tram/bus. Some models may have a pull cord instead of a button.

When you arrive at your stop, press the green button on the door to exit.

Trains vs Tram

Considering that using a train and tram are pretty similar, you may be asking yourself: what is the difference?

Trams come more often, but they also have more stops and run slower. Alternatively, trains run faster and have less stops, but they also come less often.

While you may use local trains for short distances, they are designed for longer trips. This makes trains a little bit more comfortable: they have bathrooms and eating is totally acceptable. Trams and buses are more crowded and do not have bathrooms. Eating on trams and buses is considered a no-no.

Overall, I wouldn’t overthink this. If there is both a train and a tram that will get you where you need to go you should consider the price and timing. I will usually go with what is most convenient if the price is similar. If they are identical, then just chose whatever is closest and go with that!

Bikes in Zurich

If you’re looking for a free option and are willing to put in a little sweat, Zurich has free bike rental ! To rent a bike for the day (8am-9:30pm) you will have to show a passport and provide a refundable CHF 20 deposit . You can find bikes at Zurich HB all year long, and at the Bahnhofstrasse/Pestalozziwiese and Bellevue/Utoquai from May to October. When you grab your bike, make sure to ask for a helmet!

Airport Transportation

There is a train that goes straight from Zurich Airport to downtown Zurich. For more details check out my comprehensive guide on taking the train from the airport to Zurich HB !

Zurich Public Transport – Tips & Tricks For Visitors

tourist zurich tram map

Ready to jump on some public transport in Zurich? It is not as confusing as it looks!

Zurich’s public transport system is speedy, economical, and straightforward. Once you know a few tips and tricks

This guide will help you make the most of your stay by using this efficient transit system, so you can forget about the transport and get on with your day!

Table of Contents

Types of Tickets

Zurich Public Transport has a range of tickets for commuters and tourists. These include

  • Single ride
  • Monthly & Yearly pass

And many more. But let’s focus on the most used passes, so you can quickly understand how to use the ZVV.

Single Ride

A single ticket is usually valid for 1-2 hours, depending on how many zones it covers. The idea is that it will get you from A-B with just one ticket.

You should use one of these tickets if you are only going one way, or are coming back a completely different way that goes via other zones.

Day Pass (24-hour Ticket)

The ZVV day pass or 24 hour ticket is the ideal ticket if you are returning via the same route or zones, or want to do multiple trips within the same area.

These 24 hour tickets normally cost exactly double the price of a single ticket, so it makes sense to use one even if you are just returning exactly the same way. It saves you remembering to buy another ticket and allows you the freedom of potentially taking other trips throughout the same 24 hour period.

Zurich Card

Zurich Card free transport

If you purchase the Zurich Card for use while you are in Zurich, you get discounted or free access to a huge range of museums.

On top of that, you also get zones 110 and a range of other zones ncluded in your ticket, which means you can travel for free within the majority of Zurich. You can see the zones I got when I used the ticket earlier this year.

Monthly & Yearly Pass

If you are working in Zurich and commuting every day then it makes sense to consider a monthly or yearly ZVV Pass. However, in my experience, if you are not traveling at least 3-4 days a week then it rarely makes sense to use a pass like this.

You have to organize these passes at an SBB ticket counter or purchased online . Just do the numbers before buying one as I know a lot of people who have bought a yearly pass only to decide to work more from home!

Zurich ZVV Zones

Zurich ZVV Zone Map

When you are traveling by public transport in Zurich, everything is controlled by “zones”. Almost everywhere you go downtown in central Zurich is in zone 110. This covers all the main areas such as:

  • Bahnhofstrasse
  • Stedelhofen

So, unless you are heading to the Zurich Airport, Uetliberg or anywhere else further afield, you should be ok with zone 110 in the majority of situations.

What this also means, is that when you by a ticket to a destination with the SBB App or machine, you will get zone 110 on your ticket. Check it and you will see :>

If you are heading elsewhere, it is best to just buy the ticket from/to the places you are going. Rather than trying to figure out the zones. The website/app/ticket machine can do the heavy lifting for you.

Purchasing Your Ticket

ZVV Ticket Machine at a tram stop

Buy your ticket to Zürich’s public transport with ease! There are two options:

  • Use the ticket machines at each station. They accept cash and cards.
  • Choose convenience and buy your tickets through the SBB website/App or ZVV app.

Choose your ticket type wisely – single, day pass, etc. Don’t forget to activate your ticket before boarding. Check official sources for any fare updates.

Pro Tip: Have your ticket on-hand throughout your journey to avoid any trouble. Ready to ride? Sit back, relax, and hope you don’t get a seatmate who doesn’t understand personal space!

How to Ride the Train in Zürich

Trains leaving Zurich HB

The trains in Zurich are ideal for covering larger distances. Within the town center they are all underground, but as they move away from Zurich HB they slowly move above ground.

The local trains are called “S-Bahns” and almost all of them depart underground at Zurich HB. Just keep that in mind if you are catching them. Any platform with a 3 or 4 in the front (32, 43 etc) will be underground.

There are a variety of popular train stations you might wish to use to get around Zurich such as

  • Stadelhofen
  • Tiefenbrunnen

and of course, many more.

One of the more popular destination you can use the train for is the Uetliberg mountain , one of the best places to see the Alps and all of Zurich from.

So, how exactly do you ride a train in Zurich?

  • Buy a valid ticket from your departure point to your destination
  • Get to the station before your departure time.
  • Find the right platform on the information board.
  • Move to the right area of the platform for your class carriage.
  • Get on the train and take any available seat.

Train Tickets

Please make sure you have a ticket before you get on any train in Zurich. You can do this via the machines, the SBB App or at the SBB information center (although that is painfully slow).

You do not need to validate, scan or do anything else with your ticket. But you do need to have one.

The train network in Zurich is so-called “self control”. Which sounds a bit odd in English, but means that there are random checks and fines given if you don’t have a valid ticket (usually CHF 110).

Don’t try to get away without having one. There are lots of checks and it always happens just when you don’t have a ticket. I know from experience :>

Train Schedules

The train schedules are best checked on the SBB.ch website or via the SBB App. There are yellow boards at every train station with timetable information. However, they are confusing if you have never used them before.

Alternatively, you can ask at the SBB travel information kiosks or just ask anyone on the platform and they will help you. Almost everyone speaks English in Zurich!

How to Ride the Tram in Zürich

Zurich Tram

Trams are the ideal way to move around Zurich. You just have to get to know which numbers go where.

Honestly, rather than try to figure it out as a visitor, I would either

  • Use Google Maps by selecting public transport in the options and giving your “from” and “to”
  • Use the SBB App

You can also spend time studying the ZVV tram map and timetables at each stop, but it is far easier to let a computer work it out for you :>

To get on a tram, you need a valid ticket before you enter. There are NO TICKET MACHINES on the trams.

So, how do you ride a tram in Zurich?

  • Find out which tram you need and head to the stop
  • Buy a valid ticket for the zones you will be traveling in
  • Get on at any door in the tram
  • Wait for others to leave, then enter and take any vacant seat (or stand)
  • The tram stops at all stops, so keep an eye on Google Maps or the signs
  • Exit the tram at your desired stop

I use trams about 90% of the time I need to get anywhere in Zurich. There are a few cases where a train gets me a lot closer, and faster to my destination. And sometimes, buses fill the gaps when there are no trams.

Pro Tip: Grab yourself a ZVV map or download one on your phone so you know where you are gong.

How to Ride the Bus in Zürich

I won’t spend much time on the bus system in Zurich, as it is very similar to the trams.

The only difference is that the buses tend to go where the trams don’t. As the trams criss-cross town often centered around Zurich HB. There are cases where you need to get across the tram lines too.

So, you will notice that the buses tend to fill the spaces where the trams don’t go or they link the trams together.

Many of the buses are electric and semi-fixed to their route.

You will have to push the button when arriving at your stop in the bus. Although they tend to stop at almost every stop anywhere.

Again, you need a valid ticket to ride any bus and there are often ticket machines in the bus. However, I recommend getting one before you get on, just in case!

Reading a map of Zurich allows you to wander around this city in your mind. There’s the lake with its promenade, the financial district, and the historic old town.

I find maps to be essential tools in planning any trip. They contain all the necessary information to get around a place. Be it a sightseeing map with illustrations of the main highlights, an area map for Zurich, or a town guide with a directory of cool boutiques - maps take on different shapes and forms.

Seen from another perspective, maps are also design objects. The designer’s task may be to convey information cleanly and easy to read. Or they are given expressive freedom to interpret a place and illustrate it as they please.

Zurich Tourism offers the below map of Zurich City free of charge. It lists all the important tourist attractions and even outlines a walking tour of the old town. You can view it online or pick it up at any tourist information booth.

If you want a paper map of Zurich for travel planning, Sygic Travel offers a beautiful printable tourist map and a companion smartphone app.

My advice: if you get lost in Zurich, simply ask a local to point you toward the lake or the main station. (Or both.) This will allow you to find your way back to a landmark.
