At first, our passengers had many doubts, since it was the first time, they had visited this marvelous citadel; Incertitude such as the entrance ticket to Machu Picchu, the Ollantaytambo train schedule and many other details that, like every traveler at some point in their journey, they need to know. Doubts were resolved quickly and the trip was a dream for them.
  • A beautiful family, made up of dad, mom and 03 kids of 10 -13 -15 years came to know Machu Picchu a family dream, which we knew to complement in previous days with other activities such as horseback riding in Cusco, a bicycle trip through Ausangate and Rainbow Mountain in addition to other activities that made all family members completely happy.
  • We received recently a very famous speaker who arrived on the first flight to Cusco and had to return on the last flight. The experience was fantastic for Him and for us an important challenge. We had to accommodate the schedules in the safest way so that it arrives on time on their return flight.

EVERYTHING YOU SHOULD KNOW BEFORE TRAVELING TO MACHU PICCHU

We know you have many questions, traveling to Machu Picchu is easy, but you should consider certain important points to make your experience in Machu Picchu the best.

What is the difference between the 3 circuits of Machu Picchu?

Machu Picchu has 3 new circuits, each divided into routes to make your experience worthwhile, thus offering 10 different entry tickets, preventing crowding at certain points of the archaeological site. If you are interested in tours to Machu Picchu from Cusco, we recommend considering the different circuits to make the most of your visit.

The circuit 1 offers a panoramic view of Machu Picchu, from where you can get the classic postcard photo of Machu Picchu. From this spot, you can observe various important points of the Inca citadel. However, it is important to mention that you will not have the opportunity to visit the interior of the Inca citadel.

This circuit is subdivided into 4 different routes, each allowing you to visit an additional place besides Machu Picchu:

  • Route 1-A: Machu Picchu Mountain: This ticket includes the tour with circuit 1, plus the hike to the top of Machu Picchu Mountain. The hike takes approximately 3 hours, with the ascent and descent of the mountain, and the stay in Machu Picchu is 40 minutes.
  • Route 1-B: Upper Terrace: This ticket only includes the tour with circuit 1, that is, the visit to the Guardian House sector and the classic postcard photo of Machu Picchu. The guided tour lasts approximately 40 minutes.
  • Route 1-C: Intipunku Gate: With this ticket, in addition to doing the tour with circuit 1, you can climb to the historic Sun Gate, from where you have a privileged view of Machu Picchu and the surrounding mountains.
  • Route 1-D: Inca Bridge: This ticket allows you to tour the upper terrace with circuit 1, plus visit the Inca Bridge, a construction on the edge of the mountain that connects the high jungle with Machu Picchu.

The circuit 2 is the most complete and recommended, as it covers most of the interior of Machu Picchu, besides allowing you to take the iconic photo that will immortalize your trip and gives you the opportunity to enjoy many more archaeological sites such as the Temple Plaza, the Intiwatana, and the Sacred Rock.

It is important to note that being the most recommended, the demand is higher, so reservations must be made at least 6 months in advance .

This circuit is subdivided into 2 different routes that allow you to visit the interior of Machu Picchu:

  • Route 2-A: Classic Designed: With this ticket, you can visit most of Machu Picchu, plus get the classic photo of Machu Picchu from the Guardian House. You will visit places like the Sun Temple Lookout, the Sacred Rock, and the Condor Temple.
  • Route 2-B: Lower Terrace: This ticket also allows you to visit most of Machu Picchu, but you will not be able to access the Guardian House for the classic photo of Machu Picchu. However, from a lower terrace to the Guardian House, you can get a similar photo to the postcard photo.

The circuit 3 goes through the lower part of Machu Picchu and also allows you to enjoy the Inca citadel from another view. Additionally, it allows you to reach exclusive places of Machu Picchu royalty.

  • Route 3-A: Huayna Picchu Mountain: This ticket allows you to tour Machu Picchu with circuit 3 and reach the top of Huayna Picchu Mountain. With 2 hours of ascent, you can enjoy archaeological remains at the top.
  • Route 3-B: Designed Royalty: With this ticket, you will visit enclosures built only for the Inca royalty, but it does not include the classic photo of Machu Picchu. The hike lasts approximately 2 hours where you will immerse yourself in all the Inca history.
  • Route 3-C: Great Cave: This ticket allows you to visit exclusive places in Machu Picchu, such as the Condor Temple, the Water Mirrors, the Twelve Niches, the Sacred Rock, and more, as well as visit the mysterious Moon Temple, a construction inside a natural cave in the middle of Huayna Picchu Mountain.
  • Route 3-D: Huchuy Picchu Mountain: With this ticket, in addition to the tour of the Inca royalty sector, you can hike to the top of Huchuy Picchu Mountain, the small mountain next to Huayna Picchu Mountain.

The Machu Picchu Full Day tour includes circuit 2 (subject to availability), which is the most recommended as it is the most complete and allows you to enjoy the most prominent archaeological sites.

Is it better to enter Machu Picchu in the afternoon or in the morning?

There are 9 entry times to Machu Picchu, which you can choose depending on the time you arrive in Aguas Calientes. Below are the details of the schedules:

Entry times at 6, 7, 8, and 9 in the morning to Machu Picchu For these schedules, it's necessary to depart very early from the city of Cusco, considering that the vehicle journey takes 1 hour and 30 minutes to the train station in Ollantaytambo. From there, we will take the train that will take us to the town of Aguas Calientes in a 1 hour and 50 minutes train ride. If you don't like waking up very early, you can travel a day before and stay in Aguas Calientes to avoid getting up too early.

During these times, there are not many people, and the visit is calm and pleasant, offering a different perspective compared to other schedules. You will also be able to appreciate the Intiwatana at this time.

The schedules at 10, 11, 12, and 1: It is likely that the influx of people will be more abundant. If you were planning to take the classic photo without people around, it might be a bit more challenging. The sun will be at its highest point, shining directly on the sanctuary with great intensity. However, it also has its charm, as the sky will be clear, and you will have a better view of Machu Picchu.

In the afternoon, at 1 and 2 in the afternoon: Some consider this the best time to visit Machu Picchu due to the sunset between the mountains, covering the citadel of Machu Picchu with its last rays. It's a perfect panorama for photography, and the weather is cooler. You can travel on the same day; there's no need to be in Aguas Calientes the day before, but keep in mind that you will also arrive in Cusco a bit late, around 10 to 11 at night.

Can I bring luggage into Machu Picchu?

You are not allowed to carry luggage; you can only enter with a small backpack measuring 40x35x20 cm (16x14x8 inches) to carry small personal items.

What can I take to Machu Picchu?

  • Identification document used to register for entry to Machu Picchu.
  • Windbreaker jacket.
  • Rain poncho (according to the season).
  • Trekking shoes.
  • Insect repellent.
  • Lightweight clothing.
  • Sunglasses.

What can´t I take to Machu Picchu and what are the prohibitions?

  • Carrying backpacks, bags, or purses larger than 40x35x20 cm (16x14x8 inches).
  • Entering with food.
  • Entering with any type of alcoholic beverage or while intoxicated.

What is the best season to visit Machu Picchu?

The visit to Machu Picchu is available all year round, but many consider the months of May, June, July, August, September, and October as the perfect season to travel to Machu Picchu. During these months, the sun shines brightly in the mornings and evenings, with a refreshing breeze.

In November and December , the rainy season begins again, and the landscapes gradually turn lush green while the evenings become colder. Although some days may surprise you with rain, the tours continue as usual. Machu Picchu takes on a different appearance, with mist covering the sanctuary, adding a touch of mystery as it dissipates in the air. While exploring Machu Picchu, it might get very cloudy or even rain at some point, but you can still enjoy your tour with a poncho or waterproof jacket. Many visitors actually enjoy visiting Machu Picchu in the rain more than on a sunny day because it offers a unique perspective of this wonder of the modern world. If you are not a fan of rain, it is more likely to clear up after 11 am, increasing your chances of finding Machu Picchu with clearer skies.

In January, February, and March, the rains are more frequent. During this period, it is considered the low tourist season, which has a significant advantage if you plan to travel during these months, as there will be fewer crowds. On the other hand, the advantage is that the landscapes are lush and the weather is cooler compared to other seasons. If you have already decided to travel during this season, we advise you to buy your tickets to Machu Picchu for the time slots starting from 11 am, as this increases the probability of finding Machu Picchu with clearer skies. The average number of rainy days per week varies from 3 to 4 days, and some days the rain may be light but last the entire day, while other days it might only rain for a few hours but with greater intensity. In the early morning hours, Machu Picchu is usually cloudy during these months.

Keep in mind that we are in the Andes, and the weather here is very unpredictable. Nevertheless, the information provided aims to give you a close approximation of the climate during each season. We look forward to your visit, CuscoPeru.com will have everything organized for you, and we have many satisfied passengers who have enjoyed the experiences and services we provide all year round.

How far in advance should I book my ticket to Machu Picchu?

Although you can reserve your ticket to Machu Picchu one day in advance, it is highly recommended that you make your reservation at least five or six months before your visit . Entries are limited and it is advisable to book in advance. If you wish to visit Huayna Picchu ( WAYNAPICCHU ), consider booking it 3 months before your visit.

These recommendations are important to ensure your experience in Machu Picchu is the best, as popular tickets like circuit 2 sell out very quickly. The solution for travelers who couldn't book in advance is to purchase tickets with alternative entries, circuit 1 (upper part) or circuit 3 (lower part).

There are certain times of the year when you won't be able to get a last-minute ticket due to demand. It can be cumbersome for you to reserve your ticket, so our recommendation is to book well in advance and contact our agency to secure your visit to Machu Picchu. Contact CuscoPeru.com who will be happy to assist you.

What recommendations should I take to prevent altitude sickness?

The most recommended way to prevent altitude sickness is gradual acclimatization, which means ascending moderately to adapt to the decreasing oxygen levels as you gain altitude. We advise spending at least one day in Cusco without engaging in extreme physical exertion to acclimate to the high altitude.

Taking care of your diet is also important. Eating light, easily digestible foods will aid in the acclimatization process.

Staying hydrated is crucial; make sure to drink at least 2 to 3 liters of water while you're in Cusco. Get a minimum of 8 hours of sleep daily before your tours to keep your body rested and avoid excessive physical exertion. As a natural remedy, you can drink mate or herbal infusions that aid digestion during your stay.

Are there tour options to Machu Picchu from other cities?

Yes, there are options available for tours to Machu Picchu from Lima and other major cities in Peru. These tours usually include flights from Lima to Cusco, transfers from the airport, and transportation to Aguas Calientes. Additionally, some packages may offer accommodation and guided tours in Cusco before heading to Machu Picchu. The Machu Picchu packages from Lima are ideal for those seeking a hassle-free travel experience, allowing you to enjoy the majesty of Machu Picchu with all the logistical details covered.

How can I ensure I get tickets to Machu Picchu?

To ensure your tickets to Machu Picchu , it is recommended to make a reservation at least two months in advance, especially during the high season (May to October). Tickets for the most popular circuits and for Huayna Picchu sell out quickly due to high demand. If you are planning an all-inclusive Machu Picchu tour or an affordable full-day Machu Picchu tour, don't hesitate to make your reservation with us.

Thank you Marko Andinauta for taking us on this amazing journey to Machu Picchu and for sharing your expert knowledge and passion about Inca/Peruvian history and culture.

The journey from Cusco to Machu Picchu was fascinating. We passed through remote villages by bus then took an enchanting train ride through the mountainous of “Valle Sagrado” to Aguas Calientes. In Aguas Calientes we visited a nice restaurant overlooking the Vilcanota River to enjoy some Pisco sour’s – Peru’s national drink. Finally, we boarded a large van on the way to our final destination.

Once in Machu Picchu the experience really starts to hit you. WOW. This place is an archeological marvel and one of the 7 wonders of the world. As we toured the site, we took lots of great pics and our tour guide stopped along the route to share information and perspective on key details.

Marko is a multilingual tour guide who speaks Quechua, Spanish, English and some Italian. We had both English and Spanish speakers on the tour and Marko switched between languages without missing a beat.

I highly recommend Marko Andinauta and Happy Gringo Tours!

We traveled in February 2020, and took the Machu Picchu single day tour with Marco and Happy Gringo Tours. The entire experience was excellent, and very well managed. We had was excellent communication in the lead up (including a message at 3:50am to let us know they were close to picking us up). The first part of the tour was with Peru Rail, which was very well organised. We meet Marko at the Aguas Calientes station, and he took us up to the Machu Picchu. Marko was an excellent guide, and provided so much information and detail about the history of the site. We probably could have organised the logistics of getting to and from ourselves, but the immense value added with having Marko explain the important details made the experience unforgettable. We also ended up being the only two people on the tour, which made it more special. This tour is excellent, and I can’t recommend it more highly

My mom (62 years old) and I booked this trip to see Machu Picchu and were not let down! We were a bit concerned about all the different methods and modes of transport but Gringo Tours did an excellent job coordinating the tour and making sure everyone knew where they were going. Our own private guide at Machu Picchu awaited us there and gave fantastic tidbits and information about the ruins and the surrounding areas. Could not recommend this company more!

  • Machu Picchu Classic Photo Ticket – This ticket is a great option if you are looking to get the best photographs of your visit to Machu Picchu. As its name indicates, it allows you to visit the Guardian House sector, where the famous panoramic photos of Machu Picchu are obtained (shared on social networks). The ticket allows a 2 hour 30 minute visit to the Inca citadel. It is recommended for the whole family.
  • Machu Picchu Classic Ticket – This ticket is the one that most tourists use to visit Machupicchu as it allows you to do circuit 2 that includes the classic postcard photo in Machu Picchu as well as the option to see the main Inca constructions, such as: the Main Temple, the Temple of the Sun, the Temple of the 3 Windows, the Sacred Rock, the Temple of the Condor, the Water Mirrors and more.
  • Machu Picchu Classic Ticket (lower terrace) – This ticket is very similar to the ‘Machu Picchu Classic’ ticket with the only difference that it goes through a lower terrace to get the classic photo. In addition, it allows you to do circuit 2 with a visit to the main Inca constructions, such as: the Main Temple, the Temple of the Sun, the Temple of the 3 Windows, the Sacred Rock, the Temple of the Condor, the Water Mirrors and more.
  • Machu Picchu Lower Temples Ticket – This ticket, as its name suggests, allows you to visit the Inca constructions in the lower part of Machu Picchu, also known as the royal sector. Includes a visit to Inca buildings, such as the Temple of the Sun, the House of the Inca, the Sacred Rock, the Temple of the Condor, the Water Mirrors, the Royal Fountains and the agricultural sector. In this last place you can get a beautiful photo of Machu Picchu similar to the classic photo but from a point of view from the lower part of the archaeological site.
  • Machu Picchu Ticket with Huayna Picchu – This ticket is the one that sells out the fastest in Machu Picchu. The reason? It allows you to take the popular hike to the top of the Huayna Picchu mountain. There, you can get incredible photos. • Machu Picchu Ticket with Huchuy Picchu – This ticket offers a new hiking route to one of the slopes of Huayna Picchu, the so-called Huchuypicchu mountain, which in Spanish means ‘small mountain’. There you can get spectacular views of the entire set of mountains that surround the Inca citadel.

The route is arduous along paths full of vegetation for a little more than 2 kilometers. This route is open from June 1 to October 15. This service is tourist, that is, it offers comfortable seats, large windows, tables, and service on board with the sale of snacks and drinks. Optionally, the tour recommends adding the return train in Vistadome service. This service, one level higher than Expedition, offers complimentary snacks and drinks, a dance show, and a parade of clothing made of alpaca. All in a single service and within a super comfortable train. Recommended!

Most travelers arrive in Cusco by plane. You must fly from your country to Jorge Chavez International Airport in Lima – Peru and then have to take a local flight from Lima to Cusco. There are four airlines that operate round-trip flights between Lima and Cusco: LATAM Airlines, AVIANCA Airlines, Star Peru, and Peruvian Airlines. They all offer similar schedules and in-flight service, but we generally recommend LATAM or AVIANCA Airlines, as they tend to be more accommodating when unexpected cancellations or delays occur.

In Peru, 220 volts, 60 Hz frequency, and A/B /C type plugs are used.

It is recommended to bring an adapter or converter according to the voltage, frequency, and plugs used in your country. Although most hotels and even homes in Peru now have the standard U.S. plug.

Next, we’ll visit Qenqo temple, carved from a single stone block. This temple has manmade tunnels, one of which forms an amphitheater. Travel Guide

New machu picchu regulations.

In 1983 Machu Picchu was recognized as a World Heritage site by  UNESCO , the international organization that preserves and protects natural and cultural heritages around the world.  UNESCO  has been concerned with the increase of visitors to  Machu Picchu  in the last few years and worries that these crowds are damaging the ruins. They recommended new regulations to decrease the foot traffic in the ruins, which  Peru’s Ministry of Tourism and External Commerce  ( Mincetur ) has agreed to. These new regulations will take effect on  January 1, 2019 . All visitors will now be limited to 4-hour stays.

Tickets to  Machu Picchu  will now be separated into three daily shifts: early morning  (6 AM – 9 AM) , late morning (9 AM – 12 PM) and early afternoon ( 12 PM – 3 PM) . Within these shifts, visitors must designate a specific hour to visit. This is to regulate foot traffic into the ruins – each hour will be limited to 600 visitors so no more than 2400 visitors will be in the citadel at any time.

The new regulations will have a direct impact on hiking the two mountains next to  Machu Picchu :  Huaynapicchu  and  Machu Picchu Mountain .

In order to enjoy your tour of the ruins and hike Huaynapicchu without rushing, you will need an extra entrance ticket to the ruins extending your time allowed inside.  This means that Huaynapicchu tickets will go from $ 35 per person to $ 75 per person.

All tours include  entrance to Machu Picchu , but in order to hike  Huaynapicchu  safely, we will need to purchase a second  Machu Picchu  entrance ticket with the Huaynapicchu permit which will cost a total of $ 75 pp. These new rules will start on  January 1, 2019 , and will apply to all tours.

If you have booked Huaynapicchu with  Peru Spirit Adventure  and do not want to pay this higher fee, please write us to  [email protected]

TRAVEL IN PERU:   Peru Spirit Adventure  operates in regions, where standards of accommodation can vary. Transportation and other services might not be like those you would normally have back home. However, we strive with all due care and skill, to provide the best service for our clients. Traveling in Peru requires flexibility, patience, broad-mindedness, good humor and an understanding that changes may be made without notice due to circumstances or occurrences beyond our control. For example: a strike, protest, landslide, bad weather, etc. ( Force Majeure ). By booking any of our tours & treks, you agree to allow  Peru Spirit Adventure  to make necessary changes without liability.

FORCE MAJEURE

Force Majeure is any event that PERU SPIRIT ADVENTURE cannot with all due care foresee, control or avoid. This covers events such as war or threat of war, riot, civil strike, terrorist activity, industrial dispute, disease, natural disasters, adverse weather conditions, fire or all similar events beyond our control. In this case, PERU SPIRIT ADVENTURE will not accept liability and reserves the right to change, postpone or even cancel trips. (This is a last option, of course!)

By booking any of our adventure trips (Inca Trail to Machu Picchu, Lares, Salkantay, Ausangate, Choquequirao, Rainbow Mountain trek and more) you assume the risks associated with personal accidents, medical emergencies, air travel problems etc. For these treks, PERU SPIRIT ADVENTURE Agency accepts no responsibility.

FULL TERMS & CONDITIONS FOR ADVENTURE TOURS & TREKS

You need to be in good physical health, and if your health is questionable, then you should consult a doctor. If you are over the age of 70 years old, then you will need to present us with a current good health medical certificate.
  • You must advise your guide if you wish to leave the group or the camping area for independent walks or sightseeing. If you are experiencing any problems with the services of the guide or tour, please advise the guide in that moment, so that he can resolve any problems.
  • All balances need to be paid in either cash or PayPal (see “ FINAL PAYMENTS ” section above).
  • In order to receive a student discount, you must send your valid University ID to Peru Spirit Adventure at the time of booking. ID must have your name, photo and valid expiration date. Any card without an expiration date will not be accepted. You will then be required to bring your student card with you on the trek – they will not allow you to pass through the checkpoint without this original card.
  • You will be required to show the original passport (not a copy) that you booked with, at the checkpoint to enter the Inca Trail. If you originally booked with an old passport and then renewed your passport, you must also bring your expired passport along with your new, valid passport to permit entry or they will refuse your entrance to the trail.
  • Cancellations: Your deposit is 100% non-refundable. If you need to cancel for any reason, as you approach your tour start date, there may be additional cost due. There are absolutely no exceptions (we do not accept medical notes of any kind) as our out of pocket expenses are non-refundable to us (see  “CANCELLATION FEES”  section above).
  • PERMITS: Permits for the Inca Trail are in your name and can not be transferred to anyone else under any circumstances. Change of dates is also not possible once a permit has been purchased. Permits are non-refundable and non-transferable. The deposit will be forfeited. Please note that this is a regulation of the Peruvian government and not PERU SPIRIT ADVENTURE (or any agency).

Helicopter airlifts and medical assistance are at the expense of the trekker. If you are unable to complete the tour due to illness, we will assist you in meeting your group at Machu Picchu to recommence your tour at that point. There will be no refund of the original payment.
  • PERU SPIRIT ADVENTURE will take all reasonable care in providing to our clients avoidance of accident, illness, and loss of personal property, and will only employ suitably qualified staff. We accept responsibility for the actions of our own employees. Peru Spirit Adventure cannot, however, be responsible for any action of third parties. You are totally responsible for your own personal property and rented equipment.
  • PERU SPIRIT ADVENTURE does not take responsibility for unfavorable weather conditions, natural catastrophe, strikes, accidents, illness, injury, loss of personal ítems, etc. It is the client’s responsibility to carry insurance to cover these types of events. We reserve the right to modify or cancel the program due to any of the unforeseen conditions listed above.

VERY IMPORTANT:

  • We strongly suggest spending time at high altitude (above 3000 meters / 9842 feet)- in Cusco or another high altitude area for a minimum of 2- 4 days before undertaking your trip. This is in order to minimize the possible effects of altitude sickness. By drinking plenty of fluids, adding sugar to your drinks, eating food high in carbohydrates, avoiding cigarettes, alcohol, and drinking coca tea (ancient traditional leaf) will help your body acclimatize.
  • We recommend you arrive in Cusco 48 hours or more before trek departure because occasionally we need to leave earlier than scheduled in case of strikes or other events out of our control (see ‘Force Majeure’ section below)

RIGHT TO USE PICTURES

You accept and grant to Peru Spirit Adventure – Tour Operator the right to use your images, photos, and videos that show or describe during your participation in any tour, trekking or adventure, in any advertising of any type, without payment of any additional consideration.

How to Visit Machu Picchu Solo & Last Minute Without A Tour Group

Uproxx authors

Flipping through my history book in elementary school, I’d stop on the page with photos of Machu Picchu thinking, “I HAVE to see this with my own eyes one day,” without even knowing exactly where “this” was. Peru’s Machu Picchu stands as one of the most renowned New Wonders of the World—an architectural marvel and cultural enigma. A true bucket-list destination (though I cringe at that term… it’s also pretty darn fitting).

Embodying my preferred travel style, I opted to get to Machu Picchu sans tour group. It’s not that I can’t appreciate the guidance of a tour operator — like I did on this homestay in Peru — I just love the accomplished feeling of DIY travel experiences. And I mean… the Incas literally sought refuge from Spanish invaders at Machu Picchu because they knew they wouldn’t be found. Meaning it’s not an easy destination to get to. But for solo travelers like myself, empowering ourselves through self-planning is half the joy of travel.

Below is your guide for organizing an independent expedition to Machu Picchu — from securing your park, train, and bus tickets (trust me, it’s not as simple as it seems) to our top accommodation suggestion, all tailored with Uproxx flair. My advice? Ditch the rushed day trip from Cusco and spend a night in charming Machu Picchu Pueblo — it’s totally worth it!

Machu Picchu Admission Ticket

Machu Picchu

I snagged my Machu Picchu ticket online just 48 hours before my visit – risky business during peak season (June, July, and August), but this was in January, so tickets were plentiful both online and in person. Even on the day before!

Since earlier this year, tensions over Machu Picchu ticketing prompted the government to cancel their outsourcing agreement (a win for the people), you can still purchase tickets online through the official website or trusted resale websites. You can also purchase Machu Picchu tickets in person at the Ministry of Culture office in Cusco or Aguas Calientes. There, tickets are $41 – about $25 cheaper than online.

Train to Machu Picchu Pueblo (Aguas Calientes)

Machu Picchu Train

Once you have your entrance ticket, you’ll need to get your train ticket. (The only other way to reach the site is by trekking, which is not covered in this guide.) If you buy your train ticket online, get yourself to the in-person ticket office 30 minutes before train departure time. Validating your digital ticket in person is a mandatory step to board the train!

Have your passport and receipt in hand and get ready to weave through some major crowds of people. I encountered some unexpected delays after leaving a rural homestay three hours away and managed to make with just minutes to spare. It was sort of a miracle I arrived on time to validate my ticket… Picture me sprinting down a dirt hill with a giant tote bag to catch a tuk-tuk to the main road.

My train ride to Machu Picchu Pueblo (Aguas Calientes) from Ollantaytambo was about $52 on the PeruRail Expedition line, but prices vary depending on train type, time, and date. If you want a luxury train, check out Inca Rail and A Belmont Train .

Remember that while trains depart from Cusco directly to Aguas Calientes in the high season, you’ll need to purchase a “bimodal” ticket the rest of the year. The bimodal ticket includes both train and bus transportation to and from Cusco. Interestingly, this ticket results in less time on the train and more on a bus.

Machu Picchu Bus

Machu Picchu Bus

The final step to reach Machu Picchu is the bus from Machu Picchu Pueblo (formerly Aguas Calientes), to the citadel. You can grab your bus ticket online or at the Consettur ticketing office in Cusco or Aguas Calientes. The ride takes just 15-20 minutes and costs $24 round trip.

Aside from its charm and history, I loved staying the night in Aguas Calientes because it allowed me ample time to get my ducks in a row. As a destination that sees over one million tourists a year, the bus can get booked up with rides for the following day pretty quickly!

Extra Machu Picchu Tips

Consider visiting Machu Picchu during the shoulder or off-season for a more relaxed experience. Not only does it help support local economies, but you’ll be able to score last-minute tickets, encounter fewer crowds, and feel good about easing over-tourism at this UNESCO site. Just don’t forget to brush up on some history before you go! If you want a guided tour, certified guides are readily available at the gates just before you enter the Machu Picchu citadel.

Optimal route advice from the ticket booth staff led me to “Walking Circuit 2.” I suggest buying tickets for all circuits and following the numbered signage for route two. As for the best time of day to visit Machu Picchu — the morning clouds usually clear up around 10-11 am.

Lastly, I discovered that there’s definitely a preferred side of the train with better views. Fortunately, I lucked out with that side both times! While specific seats can’t be requested online, you can inquire in person for seats on the river side, identified by the second set of four numbers (e.g., seats 5-8, 13-16). I didn’t try this, but it’s worth a shot!

Where to Stay: Machu Picchu Pueblo (Aguas Calientes)

Machu Picchu Pueblo

Inkaterra Machu Picchu Pueblo Hotel

Machu Picchu Inkaterra Hotel

Machu Picchu isn’t a spot we stumble upon every day. It’s one of those once-in-a-lifetime destinations. Given the effort and epicness of getting there, why not immerse yourself in style? That’s what went through my head during my stay at Inkaterra Machu Picchu Pueblo Hotel’s Suites Inkaterra. Relaxing in my secluded jacuzzi below the misty peaks of the Andes, I couldn’t help but melt into the grandeur of this solo adventure.

A tear may or may not have been shed.

Farm to table meals at Inkaterra are served in the elegant dining room overlooking the Vilcanota River – with a hearty breakfast buffet and served dinner included in your stay. If you have time, take one of the included excursions like the nighttime Incan constellation walk. And don’t miss a deep tissue massage at Onno Spa after a day of hiking around Machu Picchu.

Machu Picchu and beyond: what to see and do in Peru’s Inca heartland

Mountain highs.

Peter Moore

Perched high in the Andes in the south of the country, Peru’s Inca heartland – taking in  Cusco, the Sacred Valley and Machu Picchu – is the stuff that every traveller’s dreams are made of. Here lost cities sit cradled in jagged mountains, villagers in brightly coloured ponchos till the fields and imposing colonial cathedrals sit cheek-to-jowl with pre-Columbian temples.

Read on to discover the best things to do in the area the Incans regarded as the ‘Navel of the World’…

Acclimatise in Cusco

Sorin Colac/Alamy Stock Photo

Your journey starts in Cusco, a charming town sitting at an altitude of 11,150 feet (3,400m) that is one of the oldest continuously inhabited cities in the world. It was the Incan capital for close to 400 years and makes the perfect base for acclimatising to the heady heights of this part of Peru. Here you’ll find grand colonial buildings, intriguing Incan ruins, sophisticated cafes and world-class restaurants. Start your visit with a coca tea. Locals insist it’s the best way of avoiding altitude sickness and it is offered on arrival at most of the city’s hotels.

Soak up the vibes of Plaza de Armas

This grand square is surrounded by the Baroque churches and palaces built over the ruins of the Inca city when the Spanish conquered it in the 16th century. It’s busy but rarely crowded and the benches around the statue of Pachacuti (pictured), the ruler during the city’s Incan heyday, are just as likely to be occupied by locals gossiping as weary tourists resting their tired feet. There are plenty of cafes and bars overlooking the plaza, or wander through the square at night, surrounded by illuminated buildings and the muted chatter of late-night revellers heading home.

Check out the quirky colonial art in Cusco Cathedral

Tuul and Bruno Morandi/Alamy Stock Photo

Cusco Cathedral was built between 1560 and 1664 using stone pilfered from Incan fortress Sacsayhuaman. It sits on the foundations of the Koricancha, a temple dedicated to Inti, the sun god, and is an imposing jumble of Gothic, Baroque and Renaissance styles. The 16th century religious art inside is equally idiosyncratic, mixing Catholic themes and Incan symbolism, and best enjoyed in a version of The Last Supper by Marcos Zapata (pictured), where Jesus and his disciples feast on cuy (guinea pig), a local delicacy.

Catch a Saturday morning civic parade

Can’t make it to Cusco for Inti Raymi, the annual festival honouring the Sun God in June? Fear not. Cusco holds impressive civic parades in and around Plaza de Armas most weekends. Sometimes they celebrate the local emergency services. Other times it might be the home guards or local associations that are celebrated. The day I visited, local council workers were enjoying their day in the spotlight. Each parade is colourful and lively and begins when a group of elders, resplendent in brightly coloured ponchos, blow on conch shells, just as they did in Incan times.

Dine responsibly at Nuna Raymi

Ryan Bolton for Intrepid Travel

Tucked up on Triunfo Street, just around the corner from the cathedral, Nuna Raymi is a restaurant whose philosophy is to support and work with local producers, with each community involved proudly displayed on a map on their placemats. The restaurant's suppliers include Jose Cruz, a farmer from Cachin, who says Nuna Raymi has provided both a living and a future for his village, with young people deciding to stay on farms. The food here is as special as the restaurant's intentions too.

Find the creatures hidden in the Incan stone walls

Many of the grand colonial buildings in Cusco are built on the foundations of equally grand Incan buildings. Some, like the Palace of the Archbishop, even incorporate the astonishingly intricate stone walls built by the ancient stonemasons into their design. Stones were cut to shape and assembled like a giant game of 3D Tetris without using mortar. Take a moment to check out the northeast wall and see if you can pick out the shapes of various animals formed by the stones. It’s a bit like spotting constellations, and posters hanging by nearby souvenir stalls (pictured) provide a handy reference.

Lose yourself in San Pedro Market

Don’t be put off by the touristy stalls around the entrances to this vast covered market on Calle Tupac Amaru. Inside you’ll find a cacophonous maze of stalls selling all kinds of local produce, traditional medicines, flowers and the freshest smoothies in town. It’s a reminder that Cusco is, and always has been, an important market town for the small farming communities that surround the city. Feeling peckish? Head to the food stalls at the back to sample authentic local favourites like Caldo de Pollo (chicken soup), salchipapas (fried sausages and potato) and even ceviche.

Soak up the bohemian vibes in San Blas

San Blas is a charming area of steep cobbled streets and whitewashed buildings in the hilly area of Cusco north of Plaza de Armas. Here you’ll find boutique hotels, quirky cafes and stylish stores selling garments made from the finest alpaca wool. The Mirador here offers panoramic views across the city and demarcates the point most tourists don’t venture beyond. Push on a little further and you’ll be rewarded with charming laneways lined with pots bursting with colourful geraniums and hidden corners where little old ladies sit on stools selling local sweet treats for tiny prices.

Try not to be cuy

Ian Wood/Alamy Stock Photo

Cuy (guinea pigs) have been a staple of the Andean diet since the time of the Incas. And even today there are plenty of restaurants in Cusco offering you the chance to try this most Peruvian of dishes. Some use tomatoes and coca leaves to dress them up as Incan warriors, but simply roasted and served with chips is probably best. Consider heading to the food markets held in front of Convento de San Francisco de Asis where they also sell suckling pig and roast chicken, should you baulk at the prospect of eating a distant relative of your childhood pet.

Visit the spiritual home of potatoes

Peru famously grows over 4,000 varieties of potatoes and once you leave Cusco and head into the Sacred Valley, you’re in the heart of their spiritual home. It is the unique composition of the high Andean soil here that gives Peruvian potatoes their vibrant red, yellow, black and purple colouring and the antioxidants that make them the healthiest potatoes you’ll ever eat. Find out everything you ever wanted to know about the world’s favourite carbohydrate at Parque del Papa (The Potato Park) in Pisac, a living museum dedicated to Indigenous knowledge and traditions related to the humble vegetable.

Discover who ruled before the Incas

Courtesy of the Inkariy Museum

A little further into the Sacred Valley you’ll find the brilliant Inkariy Museum , dedicated to the pre-Hispanic Peruvian cultures that preceded the Incas. You’ll spot it halfway along the road between Pisac and Urubamba, marked by an arresting statue of Viracocha, the great creator deity of pre-Incan civilisations in Peru. There are eight different pavilions all told, each containing important artefacts as well as life-sized figures of each civilisation ‘in action’.

Give Urubamba a chance

Robert Wyatt/Alamy Stock Photo

Sitting on the Urubamba River and surrounded by high rugged mountains, Urubamba was once a favourite resort of the Inca. Now a dusty regional centre, it is often overlooked as visitors rush onward towards Ollantaytambo and Machu Picchu. That’s not to say Urubamba doesn’t have its own charms. The shaded Plaza de Armas (pictured) offers a cool respite from the intense Andean sun. And there’s a bustling traditional market, a line of artisan shops on Avenida Berriozabal and a charming cemetery where families decorate headstones with fresh flowers sold by a flower stall just outside the walls.

Feast on Incan soul food at the AMA

Set in a shady trestled garden out on Avenue Mariscal Castilla in Urubamba, the AMA restaurant  not only serves up some of the tastiest food in the Sacred Valley, it gives back to the community as well. The locally sourced, nourishing, delicious food served here is prepared by four single mothers, trained by AMA and gives local traditional recipes an exciting contemporary edge. Healthy homemade cooking that feeds the heart and soul, they say. Try the seared trout, straight from the Urubamba River to your plate.

Wander through the terraced salt ponds in Maras

mauritius images GmbH/Alamy Stock Photo

Salineras de Maras is an amazing patchwork of salt ponds that cascade down a steep mountain just 15 minutes from Urubamba. They date back to pre-Inca times and remain the largest pre-Hispanic salt mines in Peru. There are close to 4,500 ponds all told, fed by salt water from an underground spring, channelled to the ponds by rudimentary trenches. The Spanish conquerors never took over the local salt production, leaving it to the locals who continue to produce salt here to this day.

Raise a glass in a local chicheria

Chicherias are local pubs where you can sample chicha de jora, the local fermented corn beer. Chicha has been around since Incan times and the methods of making and serving it have changed very little over the centuries. It is served directly from the big ceramic pots it is fermented in and you are expected to tip a little on the floor before you take your first sip as an offering to Pachamama (Mother Earth). Most chicherias are little more than a room in a mud brick building with the entrance marked by a stick with a red plastic bag on top.

And play a game of sapo while you’re there

While you’re visiting a chicheria, one of the locals may challenge you to a game of sapo. It dates from Incan times too and is a kind of Peruvian version of darts, except that the object is to toss coins into the mouth of a golden toad sitting on a stand with holes around it. Each hole is worth a certain amount of points and getting your golden coin into the frog’s mouth is the equivalent of a bullseye. While drinking chicha does not help with your accuracy, it does make it even more fun.

Sleep in a luxury pod hanging off an Andean cliff

Skylodge Adventure Suites/Airbnb

The Skylodge Adventure Suites on the outskirts of Ollantaytambo take the concept of ‘room with a view’ to dizzying new heights. Each transparent luxury capsule hangs off the side of a cliff and can only be reached by manoeuvring along a 1,312-foot (400m) mountain route in full climbing gear. The views up the valley are truly breathtaking, but if you don’t fancy staying the night, you can also climb up, have lunch, then zipwire back down.

Step back in time in Ollantaytambo

People have walked the narrow, cobbled lanes of Ollantaytambo since the 13th century, but it was during the reign of Pachacutec in the 15th century that the town really boomed. The impressive Incan ruins on the edge of the town date from this time and mark one of the few places where the Spanish conquistadors lost a major battle. Today it is a lively trekking town, bustling with restaurants, cafes, hotels and travellers in hiking boots setting off for Machu Picchu. Surrounded by jagged peaks, it’s the perfect place to spend a few days before or after your trek.

Learn to weave with the mammas of Huilloc Alto

Thanks to social projects like Awamaki and tour companies like Intrepid Travel, visitors can get a real insight into rural Andean life by visiting communities like Huilloc Alto, a tiny village an hour’s drive up into the mountains from Ollantaytambo. Here you’ll spend the day with the brightly-clad mammas as they weave gorgeous textiles on traditional backstrap looms using tools made from the bones of condors. Take the chance to admire the mammas’ incredibly beautiful shawls and their ‘Montera’ basket hats, perfect for holding flowers as well as modern day essentials like keys and mobile phones.

Enjoy a traditional pachamanca

Chances are the mammas will also insist you join them for a traditional pachamanca. Pachamanca means ‘earth pot’ in the native Quechua language and is used on special occasions to prepare an Andean feast of meat and vegetables slow-cooked in a hand-dug underground oven covered with hot rocks. The Incans believed that cooking the food underground returned it to the earth and acted as an offering to Pachamama (Mother Earth). It still holds that meaning in small communities today. But increasingly it is simply an excuse to celebrate with family, friends and special guests.

Then bag yourself a truly unique souvenir

Each item created by the mammas in Hullioc Alto and other small Andean communities is handmade and truly unique. They spin the yarn themselves, dye it using only natural ingredients and spend days weaving each blanket, throw or poncho. More importantly, each piece has its own individual story, incorporating motifs handed down from the Incans or created especially to tell their unique tale. You can buy directly from the mammas, or visit the Awamaki shop in Ollantaytambo where their textiles are incorporated into a variety of amazing leather goods fashioned by local leathersmiths.

Get yourself to Machu Picchu

There are many ways to get to the famous Incan citadel of Machu Picchu, including a breathtaking four-day hike following the ancient Inca Trail. The most relaxing way is by train. Services leave Ollantaytambo throughout the day and follow the Urubamba River as it races towards Aguas Calientes through verdant valleys and increasingly lush vegetation. Panoramic windows offer immersive views of the spectacular scenery and a recorded guide points out the important sites along the way, including age-old Incan terraces as old as Machu Picchu itself.

Prepare to be humbled

At Aguas Caliente a fleet of buses awaits to ferry you up a twisting mountain road to the spectacular Incan citadel of Machu Picchu – the reason so many visitors come to this part of Peru. A short, steep path takes you up a series of terraces and then onto the viewing platform overlooking the main complex. Whatever the weather, it's more dramatic and awe-inspiring than you imagined, and since the introduction of timed tickets, it's less crowded too. Take time to soak up the view before exploring the citadel itself, now populated by a flock of alpacas.

Climb the Huayna Picchu’s ‘Stairs of Death’

lu_sea/Shutterstock

For a totally different perspective on this most famous of views, consider climbing Huayna Picchu, the 8,835-foot-high (2,693m) mountain directly behind the citadel. The walk along its paths is recognised as one of the most incredible short walks on the planet, but it is not for the faint-hearted. The ruins here once housed a crotchety priest and the stairs are so steep that they are known as the ‘Stairs of Death.’ Only 400 permits to climb Huayna Picchu are issued each day, so make sure to book in advance.

Unwind in Aguas Calientes

Nathaniel Noir/Alamy Stock Photo

Whichever route you choose to take to Machu Picchu, a dip in the thermal baths back down at Aguas Calientes is the perfect way to unwind and soothe aching muscles. These tiny natural thermal springs gave the town its name and are located beside a rushing river on a terrace above the town, about a 10-minute walk from the train station. There’s a bar there too, so you can sip on a Pisco Sour while you relax and contemplate all the wonders that you have seen on your journey through this part of Peru.

Getting there

Cusco and the Sacred Valley are served by Cusco’s Alejandro Velasco Astete International Airport, although long-haul travellers will have to transfer through Lima’s Jorge Chavez International Airport first.

Peter Moore visited in April 2024 and was a guest of Intrepid Travel as part of the operator's  Classic Peru itinerary. His visit with the Huilloc mammas was hosted by the Awamaki local business initiative and the village of Huilloc Alto.

Incredible Ways Travelers Can Experience Machu Picchu

P eru is a wilderness enthusiast's dream. From the arid deserts of the Nazca lines to the lush and diverse Amazon rainforest, this enormous country truly offers everything under the rainbow when it comes to outdoor adventure and exploration. Among its cultural and geographic attractions, Peru is also home to one of the famous New Seven Wonders of the World — Machu Picchu. A UNESCO World Heritage site, this 15th-century Incan citadel is located in the Eastern Cordillera of the Andes Mountains, high above the Urubamba River valley.

This mystical site draws over a million visitors each year (via Inca Trail Machu ). While the ancient ruins themselves are awe-inspiring, and there are certainly merits to visiting the citadel alone for a day, outdoor thrill-seekers will revel in knowing there are several trekking routes that each offer a unique experience, breathtaking landscapes, diverse ecosystems, and cultural encounters. How do you know which one to pick? Here's a guide to help you decide.

The Standard Inca Trail

The Standard Inca Trail is the classic and most popular route to Machu Picchu. This four-day hike covers approximately 26 miles (43 kilometers) and passes through a variety of landscapes, including cloud forests and alpine tundra, retracing the paths once used by Incan runners on their pilgrimages.

The trail begins at what is known at KM 82, one of multiple markers along the route from Cusco city to Machu Picchu. This marker is near the town of Ollantaytambo. The trail passes iconic sites such as Dead Woman's Pass, which is the highest point of the trek at 13,828 feet, and the Sun Gate (Inti Punku), which offers a first glimpse of Machu Picchu from an aerial perspective. The Standard Inca Trail offers the opportunity to view numerous Incan ruins along the way as well, making it an ideal route for those interested in Incan history and culture.

A downside to the Standard Inca Trail is that hiking permits are required . The Peruvian government caps how many people can traverse trails each day to 500 (via Intrepid Travel ). This includes guides and porters, so during the busy season from May to September when the weather is cool and dry, it can be difficult to secure a permit unless you book months in advance. On top of that, because of its popularity, tour operators can cost anywhere from $500 to $1500 per person, depending on the level of service, according to Machu Picchu Trek .

Salkantay Trek

For adventurers seeking a more challenging and less crowded route, the Salkantay Trek is an excellent alternative to the Inca Trail. It offers more solitude and a wider range of landscapes. Typically a five-day trek covering approximately 46 miles (74 kilometers), the Salkantay Trek starts near Mollepata, a small Andean town. It traverses the Salkantay Pass at 15,090 feet before descending into a lush cloud forest that provides some of the most ethereal views among the world's hikes . After dropping in elevation, travelers eventually reach Aguas Calientes, a city known as the gateway to Machu Picchu.

The trek features snow-capped mountains, such as Mount Salkantay, glacial lakes, and tropical jungles. The dramatic shift in ecosystems is a highlight of this route.

This trail tends to attract fewer crowds than the Standard Inca Trail, likely because it is longer and more physically demanding. On the plus side, no permits are required, making it more accessible in terms of booking tour guides and services — which come in handy when planning for tents, accommodations, and food along the hike. The Salkantay Trek can be a little cheaper than the Standard Inca as well since trekkers don't need to pay for a hiking permit.

The Lares Trek is known for its cultural immersion and scenic beauty, making it an excellent choice for those interested in experiencing local Andean life. The trek usually lasts three to four days, covering about 20 miles (33 kilometers) but is less strenuous than the Standard Inca Trail. It starts in the town of Lares and passes through picturesque Andean villages, high-altitude lakes, terraced fields, and stunning vistas of snow-capped peaks. Trekkers also have the opportunity to participate in homestays, allowing them to interact with local communities and witness and participate in traditional farming methods.

After trekkers make their way toward the end of their hike near Ollantaytambo, travelers actually take a train to Aguas Calientes, from which point they can explore Machu Picchu.

Just like the Salkantay Trek, the Lares Trek sees fewer travelers and does not require permits, though it would be handy to book homestays and guides with a local tour service in order to learn the lay of the land and immerse oneself fully in the local culture.

The Vilcabamba Trek

An off-the-beaten-path adventure, the Vilcabamba Trek is a long five-to-seven day trek, covering 37 miles (60 kilometers) of terrain. It begins in the town of Huancacalle and takes travelers through remote areas of the Vilcabamba mountain range. Trekkers encounter high Andean passes, river valleys and lush forests. However, the highlights of this trail are the archaeological sites of Vitcos-Rosaspata and the Nustahispana. Vitcos-Rosaspata was a significant religious center of the Incan Empire, and it is still well-reserved to this day. Visitors can see temples, plazas, and the ceremonial platforms where the Incas performed sacrifices. The Nustahispana, also known as the White Rock, is a massive stone nearby, believed to have served as an astronomical observatory or ceremonial site.

The Vilcabamba Trek is the most remote of the ways travelers can get to Machu Picchu, and it sees the fewest number of trekkers out of all of the options. Because of its remote location and the complex nature of the route, tour guide services can be costly, sometimes exceeding a grand per person. However, unlike some other treks, hiking permits are not required, offering more flexibility for travelers who are prepared for the challenge.

Variants Of The Inca Trail

For those with limited time or less trekking experience, there are shorter variants of the Inca Trail which offer a taste of the classic route without the extended commitment. This opens up the opportunity for people to engage in easy to moderate hikes up to Machu Picchu — which is important given that altitude sickness is a real threat in this part of Peru.

The first option is a day-long excursion to Machu Picchu. It is just under 8 miles (13 kilometers) long and starts at KM 104. It includes a visit to the ruins of Winay Wayna as well as Machu Picchu itself. It's a moderate hike that is suitable for many fitness levels. The other option is a two-day-long excursion which involves splitting up the visits to Winay Wayna and Machu Picchu over two days with an overnight stay in the town of Aguas Calientes in between.

Both variants offer stunning views, the chance to explore Incan ruins, and the opportunity to walk through diverse ecosystems. They also provide a glimpse of the famous Inca Trail. Still, because these treks go along the Standard Inca Trail, permits are required, and for the 1-day option in particular, they can be difficult to obtain due to high demand.
