Volcan Baru in Panama (A 2024 Visitor’s Guide)

by Taylor On A Trip | Aug 25, 2024 | North America , Panama , Uncategorized | 0 comments

Taylor and her tour guide on top of Volcan Baru in Panama

Summiting Volcan Baru was the best thing I did in Panama. Volcan Baru is an active stratovolcano and Panama’s highest mountain. On a clear day, you can see both the Caribbean Sea and the Pacific Ocean from the top.

Safe to say, my experience getting there for sunrise and watching the sun come up was a top life experience. However, there are some things I wish I would have known before I went.

In this article, I list out all the things you’ll want to know before you go to Volcan Baru – including your options for getting to the top. If it’s your first time in Panama, check out my list of travel tips for Panama as well – you’re going to want to read it before you go!

Essential Info For Volcan Baru

How to get to volcan baru & boquete.

Garrett at the top of Volcan Baru just as the sun was rising

Volcan Baru is located in Volcan Baru National Park in Chiriqui Province, Panama. The closest major town with hotels is Boquete, which is about 10km (20 minute drive) from the entrance of the park.

To get to Boquete from elsewhere in Panama, you have a few options:

🚗 Car: If you want to have complete freedom while traveling Panama, I recommend renting a car. Check out Discover Cars to compare rental options and find the best for you.

Just keep in mind that, while Panama’s major highways are in pretty good shape, many of the more rural roads are very much not. Watch out for twisty roads, potholes, and washboard gravel (trust me, I almost threw up going to San Blas from all of this).

🚌 Public Bus: Taking the public bus is pretty easy, but it can also be a bit of an adventure. From Panama City, you can take the bus from Albrook Station to the David Bus Terminal, and then another bus to Boquete.

🚍 Shuttle: To get to Boquete, my brother and I personally took the Hello Travel Panama shuttle from Santa Catalina. In my opinion, this is the easiest option for getting around Panama if you don’t have a car. The shuttles are spacious and the company is used to dealing with tourists.

The shuttle goes to Boquete from quite a few other desinations in Panama and Costa Rica.

However, to actually summit Volcan Baru, you only have two real options. Read them in the summiting Baru Volcano section of this article.

Volcan Baru Entrance Fees

Garrett looking out over the clouds below while on top of Volcano Baru in Panama

So, the question of an entrance fee to Volcan Baru is a bit of a weird thing.

According to our guide, Volcan Baru National Park is no longer an “operational” or mainted park. There’s no official entity that oversees it, and as such it’s free to enter.

This is also why the roadways are filled with boulders and very treacherous to climb. No one is there to remove them.

However, when getting to the entrance to the park from Boquete, you’ll see a sign that it’s $5 to enter. However, if you arrive at night there’s nobody to give this $5 to.

If you book a tour, don’t worry about it and let your guides tell you what you need.

Best Time to Visit Volcan Baru

Me, all smiles, hugging the giant white cross at the top of Baru Volcano in Panama

When to visit Volcan Baru coincides with the best time to visit Panama. The best time to visit Panama is between December and April when the country is in its dry season.

If you visit Panama outside of this season, then be prepared for daily rains and a way more humid experience.

However, the summit of Volcan Baru is 3,474 metres (11,398 ft) high. Like I said earlier, it’s the tallest mountain in Panama. The climate at the top is very different from that at the base.

The top of the volcano is pretty chilly and above the clouds. It’s much drier than on land any time of year.

How to Summit Volcan Baru

Volcan baru overnight hike.

Me raising my arms on Volcan Baru

The most *romantic* way to get to the top of Volcan Baru is to hike. This is a 27km round trip hike – 13km each way. Most hikers start this hike in the middle of the night to make it to the top for sunrise.

While it’s possible to hike this solo, it’s certainly not recommended. I can tell you from experience that hiking this in the dead of night alone would be very creepy. It’s very dark, it’s all misty, and there could be animals lurking in the shadows (it is a jungle after all).

I recommend hiking with friends or booking a Volcan Baru hiking tour. While I did not personally do this hike (I took a 4×4 to the top), I can wholeheartedly recommend Boquete Outdoor Adventures for your trip.

I booked my 4×4 with them and they were a great tour company. Just look at the reviews!

Volcan Baru Jeep 4×4 Tour

Our 4x4 jeeps on top of Volcan Baru

To summit Volcan Baru, Garrett and I booked an excursion with Boquete Outdoor Adventures . They picked us up from our hotel at 3:30am, loaded us up in a very sturdy 4×4 jeep, and then blasted AC/DC music to the top. It was a VERY bumpy ride for almost 2 hours.

Then, when they were there, they took us around to the facilities, helped us get great photos, led us to different peaks, and fed us coffee. Afterwards, they took us to a gorgeous jungle resort where we had a beautiful breakfast and lots and lots of espresso.

We even saw a Quetzal bird at the resort!

Our guides were so nice and helpful. This was an incredible tour and I can’t recommend it enough.

👉 Note: Only certified 4×4 Jeeps and drivers can attempt to climb Volcan Baru. No private vehicles are allowed to enter.

Tips for Visiting Volcan Baru

Wear warm clothing.

Garrett smiling at the camera as the sun came up on Volcan Baru in Panama

Like I said earlier, Volcan Baru is almost 12,000 feet up in the sky. That, coupled with the fact that getting there for sunrise is the best time to experience the volcano, means that it’s super cold.

I recommend wearing layers that you can put on and take off as the temperature changes. I personally wore a zip-up hoodie over a tshirt and these hiking pants . I was still a little chilly. Bring light mittens too if you can.

Know There Will be Reduced Levels of Oxygen

Me and my guide climbing Volcan Baru in Panama

Oxygen levels at the top of Baru are much lower than you’ll be used to. Again, this is because the top of the volcano is just so high up.

I absolutely felt the air thin as climbed higher. Then, at the top, I felt extra woozy as I tried to walk around. Ultimately, I was perfectly okay, but take it easy if you’re feeling faint or short of breath.

Drinking a lot of water also helps, as you get dehydrated faster the higher you go.

Bring Everything You Need for the Day

Once you leave your hotel for your trip, there’s really nowhere to get supplies. There are no shops at Volcan Baru and nowhere to buy snacks or water.

Of course, if you book with a tour (as I did) they’ll have water and food on hand for you. Still, make sure you read the packing list below and bring everything on it.

Prepare for Limited Facilities

View of the mountains and cloudtops on Volcan Baru

Maybe you’re wondering (or maybe you’re not lol), “Where do I go to the bathroom on Volcan Baru?”

Well, there are toilets, so never fear. But they’re super basic and as part of a hiking lodge at the top of the volcano. I had to walk through a room full of bunk beds and a kitchen to use the loo.

There are no bathrooms on the trail up and no port-a-potties or anything similar at the top.

Get There for Sunrise

A view of the volcano peak with the sun coming up and Boquete below on Volcan Baru

By far, the best time to get to the top of Baru is sunrise. If you take a tour, they’ll pick you up around 3:30am to account for this. But, if you hike, you’re going to want to time your hike accordingly.

I saw many people hiking up and down at all hours. But to see the sun rise over the horizon from atop a volcano is such a special experience.

What to Pack for Volcan Baru

👕 Clothing: To stay comfortable, I recommend packing layers. I wore a zip up sweater, a moisture-wicking t-shirt , and these exact hiking pants . Additionally, if you can, I recommend bringing light mittens and a toque (beanie).

🥾 For Hikers: If you’re hiking up Volcan Baru, I recommend wearing really sturdy hiking boots . Additionally, you’ll want packable hiking poles.

✈️ Travel Essentials: When I travel, I never leave my Grayl Water Purifier at home. It’s a must for countries where the water might be iffy. But I recommend bringing another empty water bottle to keep you hydrated. You’ll also want sunglasses, a hat, and snacks.

Sunrise at Volcan Baru: Jeep Tour

Watching the sunrise at Volcan Baru is one of the most adventurous things to do in Panama and will be a highlight of your Panama itinerary . The bumpy ride to the top will result in the most epic view in the country, standing at the volcanic peak, watching the sunrise over the Pacific and Caribbean. This guide includes helpful tips for the sunrise jeep tour of Volcan Baru.

Are you considering taking the Volcan Baru jeep tour? Here is my honest review of the 4×4 sunrise jeep tour with Beyond Adventure Tours.

About Volcan Baru

Standing 3474 m high, Volcan Baru is the highest point in Panama. The only Panamian volcano, Baru, has the 12th highest peak in Central America. With seven volcanic craters, there are several hiking trails to see each, varying in difficulty level.

Found inside Volcan Baru National Park, the park is home to over 240 species of birds, 86 types of mammals, 25 bat species, and 7 types of jungle cats. The view from the top of Baru Volcano is lush and unforgettable; it is the only place in the world where you can see both the Caribbean Sea and the Pacific Ocean on a clear day.

Can You Drive Up Volcan Baru?

There are two ways to travel up the volcano: jeep tour or hiking. You cannot drive your own vehicle up the volcano as the road is extremely rough, and even a regular 4×4 is not enough to conquer it. It takes really good tires and skilled driving to reach the top.

volcan baru jeep tour

Volcan Baru: Jeep Tour vs Hiking

If you want to experience the sunrise at Volcan Baru, but don’t want to do the long hike, the 4×4 jeep tour is for you. It takes about an hour of driving up the steep and winding 14km road and then another hour back down the volcano by jeep. If you have back problems, it may not be best to take the jeep tour due to all of the bumping around in the jeep while it climbs over boulders and potholes. Be prepared for how bumpy it is, and choose to go up Volcan Baru at your own discretion.

volcan baru overnight hike

Prefer to hike? Hiking to the top will take 5-8 hours in each direction, depending on your fitness level. Do not hike Volcan Baru if you are not physically fit. It is a challenging hike, especially the last portion up to the summit, where you will rock climb. The air is thinner at the summit, so prepare for heavier breathing the higher altitude you reach to get to the top. During my jeep tour, we saw people who had hiked to the top, and they told us how they started their hike around 11 pm to midnight to reach the top before sunrise.

Sunrise Jeep Tour with Beyond Adventure Tours

Here is what it’s like going on the sunrise jeep tour with Beyond Adventure Tours:

Our morning began with an early start as we were to be ready for pickup outside our hotel at 3:45 am. Hopping in the jeep, we headed off to pick up the rest of the group for today’s tour. There were six of us, including the driver, and we called each other by the countries we called home: Switzerland, Poland, USA, and us two Canadians. We were on our way to Volcan Baru National Park.

volcan baru national park

Once checked in with the park ranger, you will begin the super bumpy ride up the volcano. And I’m not exaggerating about how rough it is. It may be only a 14 km ride, but your guide drives the steep incline, curving around and conquering large boulders and potholes along the road. It makes for quite the adventure! Luckily we had the slow driver, as he called himself. We were all thankful, as we couldn’t imagine driving up the volcano faster.

volcan baru summit in panama

After an hour or so of driving slowly up the volcano, we stopped. We had reached a smooth platform where the jeeps would park, and we would continue by foot to hike to the summit. At this point, my stomach was all out of wack from the bumpy ride, so I took a motion sickness pill to help me be able to climb. It was still dark out at this point. We slowly headed to the top, feeling the air a little thinner at this elevation.

volcan baru sunrise

We made it to the top! The view from the summit was incredible and breathtaking. Shortly after, the sun peeked above the clouds. Seeing the sunrise over Volcan Baru was all I had hoped for, an unforgettable experience.

Caribbean sea from volcan baru

We could see the Caribbean Sea in the distance, but the Pacific Ocean hadn’t shown itself yet. After waiting awhile and soaking in the views, the cloud forest started to roll in. In the distance, the Pacific Ocean made its appearance. Lucky us! Watching the sunrise over two major bodies of water from the summit of a volcano, we felt like we were on top of the world!

volcan baru jeep tour breakfast

After hiking back down to where the jeeps are waiting, it is time for breakfast. Breakfast included warm ham sandwiches and hot chocolate or coffee. It was the perfect way to warm up after the hike. While eating breakfast, we had a surprise appearance from the local wildlife. The little animal was very friendly and would ask for scraps. Once finished breakfast, it is time to head back down the volcano, this time by daylight.

volcan baru road conditions

It’s the same bumpy path back to the bottom, but in the daylight, you can see all the boulders and potholes. Safely at the volcano base, the tour concluded and we were each dropped back off at our hotels. What a great morning, and it was only 9:30 am at the finish!

Prices for the sunrise 4×4 jeep tour with Beyond Adventure Tours start at 125 USD per adult. They also offer hiking with a guide starting at 90 USD and overnight camping starting at 160 USD. The jeep tour includes breakfast and hot drinks at the top of Volcan Baru after you watch the sunrise.

Tips for the Volcan Baru Jeep Tour

  • Dress warmly and in layers , as it’s cold at the volcanic peak, especially before sunrise. I wore a tank top, t-shirt, athletic sweater, and a light jacket, and I was still cold. Others wore jackets and hats, and some people even brought blankets. Plan to wear an extra layer than you think you need, as you can always take it off if you get too warm.
  • If motion sickness affects you, take medication before boarding the jeep or once you get out of the jeep at the top to climb to the peak. The ride was incredibly bumpy, and while I didn’t think I would be affected, I felt sick at the top and took a motion sickness pill before climbing, which helped.
  • Get plenty of sleep before your sunrise jeep tour, and plan the rest of your day lightly after, as you will most likely want to nap when you return. When my tour finished around 9:30 am, I was exhausted and napped for 2-3 hours.

Volcan Baru Sunrise Tour with Beyond Adventure Tours: Final Thoughts

Watching the sunrise at Volcan Baru was one of the best things I’ve done in Panama. I love volcanoes and this was my third volcano experience, after volcano boarding Cerro Negro in Nicaragua and horseback riding Taal Volcano in the Philippines . It was the bumpiest ride of my life, but oh, it was so much fun!  I had a positive experience and would recommend the sunrise jeep tour of Volcan Baru with Beyond Adventure Tours.

While yes, it’s cheaper to hike, after watching what the hike up would be like, I was very happy I chose to drive up. Our tour group was a fun bunch, and we made unforgettable memories while being bumped around in the jeep from the rough path, laughing along the way. Whether you choose to hike or take the 4×4 jeep tour, if you are considering Volcan Baru, I highly recommend you go.

27km Volcan Baru Overnight Hike: Sunrise Volcano Trek In Panama

Trekking to the top of Volcan Baru is easily the most adventurous expedition in the Boquete region. Most trekkers walk through the night to reach the summit at sunrise. If the weather is good you will be above the clouds with incredible views.

VOLCAN BARU TOUR

It is possible to hike Volcan Baru independently but it is a bit tricky to organize transport and I would advise a guide for inexperienced hikers. You can book this tour online before arriving in Boquete to arrange your trek. If you are keen to have a guided hiking tour just check this one out: Volcan Baru Hiking Tour

MY EXPERIENCE HIKING VOLCAN BARU

At 11:45 pm we set off in darkness, climbing a steep path into the mist of the night. Our mission was to reach the highest point in Panama in time to watch the sunrise from our viewpoint above the clouds. We were attempting the strenuous, overnight hike up Volcan Baru near Boquete, Panama.

To reach the entrance, we booked a taxi for 11:30 pm from Mamallena Hostel in Boquete town. I found two other hikers at the hostel to join me for the journey! A girl from England and a young guy from Germany. Our backpacks were stocked with snacks, water, and warm clothes and of course, mine was mostly camera gear.

The Volcan Baru National Park Station was unmanned and we stepped around the fence and ticked off the first official meter. We had been told the trail was actually closed but with no real report on that, we decided to go for it anyway. The station is only staffed till late afternoon so we knew we could head on in any way. The weather looked clear so it didn’t seem that it would be too dangerous. This was echoed by a local guide I had asked and the front-desk staff at Mamallena.

Incline. That is the only real way, to sum up, this trail. It begins with an incline and ends with more incline. Throughout the Volcan Baru trail, you will ascend more than 1300m in total by the time you hit the summit. The good thing to know is that for the most part, the trail has a gradual incline rather than incredibly steep sections. It was also handy that after each section of incline, the trail seemed to flatten out so you could recover before the next incline stung you.

Muddy. Several sections of the Volcan Baru trail were in fact quite muddy and we did our best to keep our feet as dry as possible. Somehow cars manage to get to the top of this road, which when you see it the next morning as you walk down will surprise you immensely. It is often rocks and mud in piles, hardly a road you want to be driving up or walking along in the dark. That’s why it is important to have a headlight or a torch for the journey. Other than some mud and rocks, the trail is straightforward and easy to follow.

With the steady incline, we were making time very well. Too well. We calculated that we would reach the summit far too early and be waiting in the freezing cold at the top of Volcan Baru for the sun to rise. We started to take longer breaks while it wasn’t too cold yet.

There isn’t too much to see during the night except for a few nice vistas of the city lights. Other than that, the sound of birds and animals kept us on edge as did the ever-rolling fog.

There were signs along the way, which were a good motivator. At every 1-2 kilometers, a green and yellow metal sign would tell you how far you had trekked, how far you had to go, and how high you were. We looked forward to these signs and looked out for them around each corner as we edged closer to the Volcan Baru summit.

As we trudged on into the night, sharing stories and travel tales, we were starting to tire. In fact, it was the first time in my life I have started to fall asleep while walking. It’s a thing.

We made it to the 11.5 km mark of the Volcan Baru trail and realized we were way too early. It was 4 am and the sunrise was at 630 am. It would only take us 30-40 minutes maximum to reach the summit from this point. We decided to find an area as hidden from the wind as possible and wait it out until 530 am and then begin the trek to the summit. It was freezing cold waiting and I found myself pacing and doing jumping jacks to keep warm. I also found myself falling asleep while standing up. *TIP: Leave at 1230am from Boquete town and you will have timed the run much better than us.

By the time 530am rolled around we were all frozen but the sky was now a soft blue. We were so stoked to get moving and that we might actually get a decent sunrise. Boquete had been raining for two weeks straight so we assumed we wouldn’t get much of a show but now all of a sudden we had hope. The sky was blue and quite clear.

Energized by the hope of a sunrise at the summit of Volcan Baru, we set off with renewed vigor, eager to reach the summit. As we edged closer and closer the sky became clearer and clearer. We reached the camping area, which is at the foot of the trail to the summit. We could now see the radio towers and had already noticed that the clouds were in fact, below us.

tour a volcan baru

The sky was now starting to turn pink and I had turned it up a gear as I wanted to be at the summit right now! The final trail to the summit is quite steep but we were motoring. Everyone could tell it was going to be an epic sunrise. We were getting so lucky!

We made it to the summit! 13km of effort in the cold and the dark and now we were here. We looked out over to the horizon and all we could see was a blanket of clouds below us, the sun was trying to break through, and then, it did just that.

volcanoes in panama, volcano panama, volcano in panama, volcano baru, baru volcano, volcan baru hike, voclan baru panama, volcan baru national park, parque nacional volcan baru

Now we had the perfect sunrise as the clouds lit up and began flowing up toward us. It was a crazy moment as the three of us stood on the edge of the summit and watched clouds surge towards us with incredible speed. The stoke couldn’t have been any higher.

We hung out watched the clouds and shot for about an hour at the summit. Our fingers were frozen and we decided we had hit the limit and needed to trek back down to warmer temperatures. We were really lucky that the sun was out, which softened the blow of the cold summit. I can’t imagine it on a cold, rainy morning!

The trek back down was quite slow but it was great to see all of the scenery we missed in the darkness the night before. We kept our eyes peeled for the elusive Quetzal but didn’t spot any. Some of the jungle scenes on the way down are beautiful and almost worth the hike in themselves.

It took us about 3 hours to make the trek back down with a few lengthy breaks. You can likely make it down much quicker if you need to. We even spotted a very calm little lizard on the trail during our trek down.

volcanoes in panama, volcano panama, volcano in panama, volcano baru, baru volcano, volcan baru hike, voclan baru panama, volcan baru national park, parque nacional volcan baru

We reached the sign-in station and the man asked us to sign our names but didn’t ask us to pay. Our luck just seemed to continue.

We then caught the colectivo bus back to Boquete for $4 per person and headed straight to Sobroson’s Cafe for a feed and a recovery coffee. That afternoon I slept for five hours til 7. I then woke up, edited all the photos, and went back to sleep from 11 to 8 the next morning and I was good to go from that point onwards!

Hiking Volcan Baru was my favorite moment from my Panama trip so far and I highly suggest it. I hope you get as lucky as us with the weather and the sunrise!

WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW BEFORE HIKING VOLCAN BARU

Weather: The weather is freezing from mid-way through the hike and only gets colder as you get higher and higher. Depending on the season, it can be sub-zero at the summit and incredibly windy.

It is important to check the forecast because it will be a miserable hike if you are dripping wet. I understand you might need to take a risk on the weather if you only have a couple of nights in Boquete and want to hike Volcan Baru. However, make sure you check the weather and pick the best possible night as 27km in the freezing old as you are wet is going to be one hell of a journey!

It wouldn’t necessarily be dangerous in the rain as the trail is on a road the whole way. You may slip a lot but you aren’t going to fall down a mountain on the trail. However, at the summit on the rocks, it can get dangerous with big drop-offs. I would be very, very cautious in wet weather at this summit. The photos I took on the rocks were on a completely dry day as you can see from the sun! Always play to the weather. Be smart and don’t try and take on mother nature. She never loses.

Distance: 13km to the summit and 13km return the same way out. 27km total.

Clothes: You might be a backpacker like me and don’t travel with a ski jacket or hiking gear. What I suggest is to borrow one from someone in town or at the hostel. I would also buy a pair of $2 gloves from Boquete town. I wore shorts to begin the hike, running shoes, a t-shirt, a rain jacket, and a beanie. Throughout the hike, it got colder and colder. After 10km of hiking, I was no longer hot and changed into my second dry t-shirt, put my pants on and put my hoodie on underneath my rain jacket. I was bloody freezing at this point! I really wished I had a down jacket.

Entrance Fee: We were told there is a $5 entrance fee. However, there is no one at the station when you arrive at night. Therefore, we were expecting to pay it on the way down. There is even a sign at the bottom that says the fees. However, we arrived the next morning, the man at the station made us sign our names but never asked for a fee. Assume there is a $5 fee but it isn’t always collected apparently.

Solo or in a group?: I am a solo traveler and do a lot of hikes and dangerous activities by myself. However, I am very glad I did this with two people I met at the hostel. Walking in the night into the misty darkness was very creepy. We were joking that it was a bit of a horror movie scene. It is possible of course to do it alone but it’s a bit spooky and unless you are looking for some kind of challenge against your fears, I suggest grabbing a mate from the hostel. It’s also great to have a hiking mate for safety.

Is Volcan Baru active: The volcano is not currently active and is safe to hike into as of 2018.

Volcan Baru height: The Volcano is 3475m above sea level making it the highest point in Panama. We were well above the clouds at the summit, which is one of my favorite things ever!

HOW TO GET TO VOLCAN BARU ENTRANCE

There are several options for how to get to Volcan Baru. There are actually two routes to the top. One is from the Cerro Punta side and one is from the Boquete side. I can tell you about the Cerro Punta side but I trekked in from the Boquete side, as do most people because it is much easier (still quite hard) than the Cerro Punta side.

The most common option is to organize a taxi for you and your friends. From Mamallena hostel, they have a standard rate of $7 per person or a minimum of $20 for their regular taxi man. It isn’t a cheap ride considering the distance but it is quite late at night. The distance from Boquete town to the Volcan Baru hike entrance is 11 kilometers. We hiked up in a group of three so we paid $7 each. The staff at Mamallena booked the taxi for us and made sure it was on time. If you are not organizing it through Mamallena Hostel, you will need to meet and greet a taxi driver during the day and agree on a meeting place and a cost. It won’t be hard to organize.

The other option is to walk to the start of the trail, which I highly discourage as it is 11km to the trail entrance and then you will have a 27km round-trip.

VOLCAN BARU MAP LOCATION

HOW TO GET BACK TO BOQUETE FROM VOLCAN BARU

To get back to Boquete from Volcan Baru you have cheaper options available than when you arrived. This is because after watching the sunrise and trekking down it is likely around midday. Therefore, the bus service is running. Once you hike down back past the sign-in station, walk to the bottom of the hill. The bus service will pick you up from here and the fee for us was $4 per person. It will be hard to get a taxi from this point so the bus really is your only option. The bus will drop you right back into Boquete town.

Hi, thank you for great post about this hike. Just a question. When have you done this hike? There is a date on the top saying June 2023, but below are comments from 2018? Just asking to know about prices, if this is a recent article or it will be different when I visit this place. Thank you man

Is it possible to drive to the start of the trail yourself? Is there a place to park?

@Veerle, Yes, you can park at the entrance.

Wednesday 16th of March 2022

We wanted to climb the vulcano during the day and we got very disappointed at the start of the climb. We weren't allowed to enter because we didn't make a reservation (which is so weird, it's just a national park). So if you're planning on doing this hike during the day, please make sure you ask your hotel/hostel to make the reservation for you.

In Panama, near the border with Costa Rica, the Volcán Barú National Park rises, a dream destination for nature and adventure enthusiasts. Its unique geography, fascinating biodiversity, and unparalleled panoramic views from its highest point invite you to discover a world of unforgettable experiences.

National Park Data

Volcán Barú National Park

Located in the Chiriquí Province of Panama, the Volcán Barú National Park is a natural gem that extends across 14,000 hectares of lush mountainous landscape. Its geolocation can be determined using the coordinates: 8°48′28″N 82°32′34″W / 8.80777778, -82.54277778

History and Recognition as a National Park

Declared under the Spanish name " Parque Nacional Volcán Barú ", on June 24, 1976, through Decree No. 40, the Barú Volcano stands as a monument to Panama’s natural diversity and a testament to the country’s rich geological history. This protected area takes its name from the highest natural elevation in the Republic of Panama, the Barú Volcano , which reaches a maximum height of 3,475 meters above sea level. The park covers an area of 143.25 km².

The climate within the Volcán Barú National Park exhibits significant variability based on altitude and geographical location . In the lower zones, rainfall is less intense, averaging around 4,000 mm per year. However, in higher areas, precipitation exceeds 6,000 mm annually. This difference in rainfall amounts contributes to the diversity of landscapes and ecosystems within the park.

Regarding temperatures, they also vary significantly with altitude. At the summit of the volcano, average annual temperatures are quite cool, hovering around 10ºC. This area experiences colder weather due to its high elevation. On the other hand, in lower altitude zones, average annual temperatures are warmer, around 20ºC. These milder temperatures are due to the influence of proximity to sea level.

Biodiversity of the Park

The park is home to a wide variety of endemic plant species , creating a mosaic of lush landscapes and vibrant flowers that bring its exceptional natural beauty to life. Various types of forests and habitats are unique to Panama. These include Very Humid Montane Forests, Low Montane Humid Forests, Low Montane Rainforests, Montane Rainforests, Very Humid Low Montane Forests, and Premontane Rainforests. Each of these ecosystems harbors a diversity of flora and fauna, forming a mosaic of landscapes and biodiversity.

In some areas of the park, areas of lava flow with scant vegetation can be found, creating a unique environment. Additionally, there are areas with natural woody vegetation and forests with different characteristics, such as the Cloud-Shrouded Lower Montane Evergreen Broadleaf Forest, the Cloud-Shrouded Lower Montane Evergreen Broadleaf Forest, and the Cloud-Shrouded Upper Montane Evergreen Broadleaf Forest. Each of these forests has distinctive characteristics in terms of plant species and microclimates.

Places like Paso del Respingo are especially noteworthy for birdwatching, hosting species like the Quetzal and Toucan. They are also ideal for discovering a variety of plants such as orchids, ferns, and mosses that thrive in these wet mountainous environments.

Diverse Fauna

The park harbors an incredibly diverse fauna , including a variety of birds, mammals, and reptiles, some of which are endangered species. There are at least 250 different species identified so far. Among the iconic species are the toucan ( Ramphastidae) , the quetzal ( Pharomachrus mocinno ), the black-and-white hawk-eagle ( Spizaetus melanoleucus ), and the hummingbird ( Trochilidae ). These birds are recognized for their beauty and uniqueness in the animal kingdom.

It is also home to endemic birds, meaning they are only found in that specific region. Some examples of these endemic species include the black guan, the slate-throated redstart, the zeledonia, and the yellow-crowned euphonia. These birds are of great importance for biodiversity conservation, as their presence and survival are limited to a specific geographic area.

Endangered Species

Endangered species such as the jaguar and the resplendent quetzal call this park home, making it a critically important site for biodiversity conservation.

Volcan Baru National Park

Visit the highest point in the country, which also happens to be a volcano! At 3,474 meters high, the towering Baru Volcano is the 12th highest peak in Central America and the only place in the world where, on the clearest of days, you can see the Atlantic and Pacific Oceans at the same time. The Volcano and its surrounding land feature five different ecosystems thanks to a combination of rainforest highlands, as well as the byproducts of volcanic eruptions that occurred millions of years ago.

Volcan Baru National Park is located in the province of Chiriqui , which is an internationally recognized producer of geisha coffee, thanks to the area’s volcanic soil. This high-quality coffee is grown at extremely high altitudes and is one of the most expensive coffee varieties in the world. Make sure to pick some up when you visit!

Baru Volcano has seven craters, and several hiking trails you can take to see them. Some trails are quite challenging, while others are shorter and more accessible. If you’re a very experienced hiker, you can make the epic journey to the top of the volcano via the town of Volcan. This demanding hike can take up to eight hours there and back. For a more accessible journey to the top, you can enter the park in the town of Boquete, where you can access the peak by 4x4 in about 90 minutes, or by hiking on a long, but easier trail. When you get to the top, you’ll be standing at the highest point in Panamá. If the timing’s right, stay for an incredible sunset above the clouds, or consider camping there to experience a night close to the stars.

Getting There

The Baru Volcano is located in the Chiriqui Highlands, surrounded by the towns of Boquete, Volcan and Cerro Punta. The entrance of the Park is in Boquete, where hikes and most tours start from.

Baru Volcano National Park

Panama Image

Set just outside the town of Boquete in Panama’s western highlands, the Barú Volcano National Park (Parque Nacional Volcán Barú) is large and impressive. The park contains Panama’s only volcano, highest peak, and several scenic (albeit rugged) hiking trails. Birders are especially fond of the park, as it offers the chance to spot one of Central America’s most elusive birds, the resplendent quetzal.

The Barú Volcano National Park extends across 14,300 hectares (35,336 acres). The volcano rises to a height 3,478 meters (11,411 ft.), the highest point in Panama. On a clear day, you can see both the Pacific Ocean and Caribbean Sea from the peak. The volcano, which has seven craters, is no longer active but has had four eruptive episodes over the past 1,600 years, the most recent of which was 400-500 years ago. Seismic events during the 20th century and a recent 2006 earthquake serve as reminders of the tectonic terrain that still exists beneath the volcano.

The Barú Volcano National Park includes a variety of climates and terrain. There are humid montane forests, low humid montane forests, and montane rain forests. Some 250 species of birds have been spotted within the park, including the resplendent quetzal, the black-bellied hummingbird, black-cheeked warbler, yellow-thighed finch, and the hairy woodpecker. All five of the big cat species live within the park, including pumas and leopards, as well as porcupines and other mammals. Average temperatures vary between 20°C (68°F) to 10°C (50°F).

One of the park’s most popular trails is the Sendero Los Quetzales (Quetzals Trail), which runs between Cerro Punta and Boquete. The trail is 8 kilometers (5 mi) long and takes around five or six hours to hike. The surroundings are beautiful—the trail runs through forests and meadows, and is crisscrossed by the Río Caldera. Along the way, you get wonderful views of the Boquete valley.

Cerro Punta is about a kilometer higher in elevation than Boquete, so the hike from Boquete to Cerro Punta is uphill. Some people prefer to go from Cerro Punta to Boquete and take advantage of the downhill walk, while others favor hiking uphill to save their knees from the steep descent. In either case, it’s advised to hike the trail with a guide. Doing so will help you avoid making a wrong turn, as well as greatly improve your chance of spotting wildlife.

Hiking to the summit of the Barú Volcano is also popular, although it should be noted that this is a serious, all-day trek. The hike runs steadily uphill for 13.5 kilometers (8.5 mi), which usually takes 4-5 hours. Along the way, you pass through shady forests and sheep-filled meadows, and get wonderful views of the valley below. At the top you can see far into the distance; if the weather is clear, you can even see both the Pacific and Caribbean. The hike down typically takes 3-4 hours. Bring meals and snacks and lots of water—you don’t want to get hungry or dehydrated up here. Guides are also recommended for this hike.

A less strenuous walk that travelers can do is the Bajo Mono Loop. This 20-kilometer (12.5-mi) paved loop begins and ends north of Boquete. Rising above the town, the road passes through dense forests and gives panoramic views of the Boquete valley. Be careful, though, as cars share the road.

Hiking The Volcan Baru in Panama

At 3,474 meters (11,398 feet) Volcan Barú is the highest mountain in Panama . This active volcano is one of the few places in the world that you have the chance to see both the Pacific Ocean and Caribbean Sea at the same time.

It was the holiday season and we were fortunate to have three guests come to visit us, Pablo and Irene, two friends of Antonio’s from university and Amanda’s sister, Danielle.

After our original travel plan had failed we decided to head to the mountains to a small town called Boquete. One of the main attractions in Boquete is to hike to the summit of Barú. As the trip was a last minute change of plans and we hadn’t packed many warm clothes but we would have to make due.

[thrive_leads id=’51961′]

There are a few different ways to summit the volcano. Baru doesn’t require any multi-day climbing expedition like the giant Chimborazo or Cotopaxi in Ecuador. Simple hiking is the most popular and rewarding way. You can walk independently, with an organized hostel group or with a local guide. The trail is very easy to follow and it is almost impossible for you to get lost. A good GPS for hiking is always handy, but it’s not a must for Baru. However if you are not an experienced hiker or don’t travel with a tent of your own, hiring a guide is a good option.

Many people choose to start climbing around midnight and reach the summit for the sunrise. Another option is you can wake up early and start climbing by 6, summit at noon and have time to come back to Boquete before dark. Some hikers choose to climb in the afternoon, enjoy the sunset, camp at the top then descend in the morning.

For those not feeling up to the challenge there are 4×4 tours to the summit. Its a bumpy ride up the boulder laden trail but is a good alternative to hiking if you are physically unable.

EQUIPMENT CHECK LIST

We have previously climbed during the night other volcanoes like Acatenango in Guatemala and Telica in Nicaragua . As we hadn’t prepared for cold weather hiking during the day was our best option this time. From the plaza in Boquete all five of us crammed into a taxi and headed for the entrance of Volcan Barú National Park. We were fortunate to have perfect weather conditions, sun and no wind.

From the park entrance we followed the wide, dirt and rock path with lush green forest on both sides. The trail is a series of gradual inclines that offers some great views along the way.

We maintained a relaxed pace and reached the summit in 6 hours. At the top there are network towers that broadcast the Panamanian President’s T.V channel among other programs. You can follow a path past a shrine of the Virgin of Guadalupe to a series of rocks which you have to climb over to reach the very top. Here above the clouds you come to a large, white, graffitied cross and a stunning 360 view.

  • Duration of the Trip

Bring warm clothes, good walking shoes, and a waterproof jacket. You should carry at least 2 liters of water with you and some snacks for the trail. If you plan to stay the night you’ll need to arrange a tent, sleeping bag and food. You can also hire a local guide who will arrange all of this for you.

It is about 14.5 km from the rangers station to the summit It takes between 5-6 hours (at a relaxed pace) to reach the summit. Descending takes about 3 hours depending on your walking speed.

Dry season (between December – May) is a great time to go as you will have less chance of rain also the skies are generally clearer, making the view from the top even more impressive.

From Boquete you take a taxi to the Volcan Baru National Park. They charge around 12USD for a one way trip.

WHAT WE LIKED THE MOST

  • The cool weather was a great break from the heat of the Panamanian coast.
  • The trail was easy to follow and is well maintained.
  • The view from the top was impressive.

WHAT WE DIDN’T LIKE THAT MUCH

  • There wasn’t anything we didn’t like!

FINAL THOUGHTS

Hiking Volcan Barú was a great day trip to do while visiting Boquete. The trail is wide and well maintained making it an easy climb. The view from the top above the clouds is impressive and while we weren’t able to see the Caribbean we could see the Pacific.

Location:  Volcán Barú, Chiriqui, Panama

Price:  5 USD entry fee.

Useful Notes:  The weather on the volcano can be very unpredictable so plan for the worst. The temperature at summit during the night can drop below freezing, there have been reports of snow and ice during the dry season. Warm clothes, water, food and good walking shoes are essential items for this trip.

That looks like an amazing day trip! If you could have done it all over again, would you recommend the Midnight hike to catch the Sunrise, stay with the day hike like you did or camp overnight at the Summit to catch the Sunset?

Hi Ray! I’d hike during the day then catch the sunset. From other peoples photos of the sunrise it doesn’t seem that great because the sun comes right behind the cable tower. Are you planning a trip to Baru?

Hi! me and some friends are on our exchange year here in Panama and we want to hike up volcan baru but we’re not sure about which path we should take… Did you do the Volcan route (more dangerous one) or the bouquete route? We know that 2 persons went missing on the Volcan route and that there are a couple of forks on the road and that it’s not very clearly which one you should take…

Hey Shalina! We took the Boquete route, it’s super easy to follow, it would be difficult to get lost. Enjoy your trip!

Thank you!! And we will!

Feel free to take the Volcan Route as long as you go with a guide. Dangerous is a pretty heavy word, the trail does require caution but with a guide there shouldn’t be any issues. Most people that get lost do so because they went on their own and the trail can sometimes be difficult to observe in certain sections. I did go there on new year and it was awesome. I’ve done the Boquete trail once and it is cool too, but you will get less views during the trail.

Nice! Will try it out next time.

Do you recommend any other cool hikes around the area?

Motorcycle Travel Guide: Panama

Welcome to Panama! Panama marks the end of the road in North America for motorcycle travellers. It’s a hub for storage and shipping onto South America for overlanders, and this guide explains everything you need to know about getting in, out and travelling through the country on two wheels…

Motorcycle Travel Panama

This guide is based on our motorcycle ride through Panama during our round the world trip. All guides on Mad or Nomad are constantly updated by us and with info from contributors to keep them as up-to-date as possible.

Motorcycle Travel Guide Panama

The main reason motorcycle travellers and overlanders enter Panama is to ship their motorcycles from the last country in North America, over the Darien Gap and into Colombia to start their South America adventure.

The two countries (and continents) are separated by the infamous Darien Gap. It’s a dense and dangerous jungle spanning Panama and Colombia that’s impassable for overlanders. It’s also a hotspot for criminals and drug and human traffickers. So, travellers ship their bikes from Panama City to Colombia and vice versa.

It marks a natural break in an Americas trip for those riding down from Alaska or up from Ushuaia, so riders also store their bikes in Panama because it’s so easy to do and fly home or simply take a break from their ride and then ship their bikes once they’re ready to continue.

But, it’s not all about logistics, Panama does have a lot to offer from beautiful islands, fascinating culture, wildlife and indigenous people that make it a worthy place to explore. Whatever your reason for riding there, this guide explains how to get in and out and everything you need to know about motorcycle travel in Panama.

Our motorcycle ride through Panama

We (Andy and Alissa from Mad or Nomad) are on a round the world motorcycle trip and entered Panama in 2024. This guide is based on our experiences and what we learnt. However, as with all our guides, readers and fellow travellers kindly contribute additional info and experiences so we can keep our articles current and up to date. For more info on our ride there and what we got up to, have a read of our Panama Blog.

Quick info on Panama

Panama is an interesting little country tucked away at the bottom of Central America. It was originally inhabited by indigenous people and colonised by the Spanish in 1500s. It gained independence from Spain in 1821 and joined the Gran Colombia Federation. Independence came again in 1903 with the help from the US so the country could build the Panama Canal to connect the Atlantic and Pacific Oceans. The US ran the canal until 1999 when Panama took full control. Today, Panama City is a modern and safe city in Central America (and one of the priciest too).

For motorcycle travellers entering Panama, you will need your passport, motorcycle registration document and driver’s licence. The paperwork required to ride in Panama is as follows:

First you will need to obtain your insurance, then complete immigration, then obtain your temporary import permit followed by fumigation.

Motorcycle insurance for foreign registered motorcycles is a big deal in Panama. You can purchase insurance at the border in Panama so there’s nothing you need to do in advance. Simply find the insurance office and give them your passport and vehicle registration document. They’ll make all necessary copies and give you an insurance document which costs $25 USD. It tends to be valid for 90 days, but it may be less, so do check and ask in advance. You can simply park at the border post and walk to the insurance office.

Motorcycle Travel Guide Panama

Immigration

Then visit the immigration office. You can do immigration before insurance. We chose to do insurance first because the immigration queue was so long. Immigration is a simple and quick process. You may be asked for a hotel, so just have the name and address of one ready. An important point here is to make sure your passport gets an entry stamp because if you try and leave the country without one you’ll have to pay a fine.

British citizens get 90 days visa free in Panama and US and Canadians get 180 days. Check the Panama government website for info on other countries.  and have a look at this page for quick info.

Temporary Import

Armed with a stamp in your passport and an insurance certificate, it’s time to visit the Aduana and get your Temporary Import Permit (TIP). The officer will ask you for copies of your insurance (the insurance office will give you an original and a copy), passport and registration document. They will then produce a TIP for you valid for 30 days. It’s possible to extend your TIP twice while in the country.

Once you have your TIP, an officer will come and inspect your bike and make sure all the details match up. Your TIP has a QR code on it which they will scan. There are no fees for your TIP.

Important – before you leave the Aduana with your TIP, check all the details they have printed. Check and recheck your VIN, chassis, engine numbers, registration number, passport – make sure there are no mistakes anywhere on the document. If there are, you will have problems shipping your vehicle out. If you spot a mistake, kindly ask the officer to correct it.

Motorcycle Travel Panama

The last step is fumigation. With your TIP and paperwork, visit the fumigation booth towards the exit and give them your paperwork. They’ll then spray your tyres and give you a slip of paper and ask for 3USD. You will have one more check further up the road and you’re free!

Important note on passports

You must carry your passport with you at all times in Panama. Even if you’re just walking to the shops. They’re strict on it in an attempt to crack down on people overstaying their visas. And a copy won’t do, it has to be your original passport.

Important note on vaccines

If you are coming from a region deemed as at risk of yellow fever, you must show proof that you have been vaccinated. More info can be found here.

More on paperwork

If you’re planning a motorcycle trip and aren’t used to the different types of paperwork requirements, or are just trying to get your head around motorcycle paperwork in general, have a read of our packed paperwork for bikers guide too.

Crossing a land border into Panama

Panama shares borders with Costa Rica and Colombia. You can’t enter via Colombia due to the incredibly dangerous Darien Gap jungle so to get in or out via a land border, your only border crossing is with Costa Rica.

There are three main border crossings between Panama and Costa Rica.

  • Sixaola in the north
  • Rio Sereno in the centre
  • Paso Canoas further south

You’re fine to cross at any of the borders, but just note the first two are more remote and you may find difficulties on weekends for example. The third is the main border crossing, and even though it’s the main, it’s still easy and straightforward.

Check the iOverlander app for up-to-date reports for each crossing.

Flying your motorcycle in and out of Panama

To get from Panama to Colombia (or vice versa), you will need to fly your motorcycle across the Darien Gap. Before, you were able to use boats, but these services have been shut down by both governments and the only legal way now is to fly your bike.

Luckily, it’s straightforward and easy to do and there are some excellent companies in Panama that are highly experienced in shipping bikes in and out. Your bike can be flown between countries within a couple of days.

As there’s a lot to cover, we’ve published a dedicated guide specifically explaining everything you need to know about shipping a motorcycle from Panama. Check it out for more info.

How to Ship and Store a Motorcycle in Panama

Entering Panama on a flight

If you have stored your bike in Panama and want to return to continue a ride there, or even if you’re just flying in for whatever reason, you will need to show proof of onward travel.

Motorcycle storage in Panama

If you’re planning on shipping your motorcycle out of Panama (or even to Panama) and want to pause your trip for a while, it’s straightforward to store your motorcycle in the country.

If you’re heading to South America, you can drop your bike off in Panama with a storage company and have them send it to Colombia whenever you’re ready.

The big plus for overland travellers is that you do not need to return to Panama to ship your bike. You can just store your bike, fly home, contact the storage company in Panama whenever you’re ready to have it shipped and give them the go ahead and then fly to Colombia to collect it.

Also, there aren’t any problems leaving Panama with your bike still in the country provided you have properly cancelled your TIP and your bike is in a bonded warehouse with an official storage company that has sorted your paperwork for you.

The storage company will take charge of your bike and take you to the Aduana to cancel your TIP. The Aduana will then stamp your passport to show your bike has been taken care of. That way you can freely leave the country without your motorcycle.

We have a dedicated guide explaining everything you need to know on storing a motorcycle in Panama.

When to ride in Panama

Panama has a tropical climate with two seasons: dry and wet.

Dry season is from December to April. You’ll find less rain, more sun and consistently warm temps. Wet season with frequent rain and high humidity runs from May to November. However, you’ll often find the worst downpours are in the afternoon and so long as you get your rides completed early in the day you might escape most of the wet weather.

Money and costs

Panama isn’t the cheapest country in Central America, but at the same time it’s not as expensive as its neighbour – Costa Rica.

Money can easily be withdrawn at ATMs in large towns, you’ll find them using Google Maps. You can use USD throughout the country.

Petrol prices in Panama are moderate compared to other countries in Central America, but they can always fluctuate. We found Belize to be the most expensive for fuel.

Food and water

Food and drink is expensive in Panama, especially once you’re in Panama City. If you search out local restaurants and street food stalls you can get away with spending much less. But, the nice parts of the city are filled with expensive restaurants. Most hotels and guest houses in Panama provide filtered water.

Accommodation

Panama City is pricey for decent accommodation. It’s worth checking AirBnB and Booking.com and also looking at the reviews on iOverlander. You can find cheap dormitories, but for a decent room with air-con and a private bathroom you’re looking at 40USD and upwards.

For Panama City, we recommend staying at El Machico Hostel . We had a room there with a private bathroom and air con and most importantly, it has secure gated parking for motorcycles and is in a safe area of the city.

tour a volcan baru

Road conditions

The main roads in Panama are well maintained and the road linking Costa Rica to Panama City is straight and fast flowing. You will find damaged sections with large potholes so keep your concentration up at all times.

You can also find plenty of off-road routes and trails, but it’s not like you’ll accidentally end up on them. You will specifically need to be heading off onto backroads and towards the jungles to find them.

There are toll roads in Panama and you do need a PanamaPass to use them. The booths are not manned and are all automatic, so it’s best not to take toll roads. They’re mainly around the City and are easy to avoid.

Places to visit in Panama

Here’s a selection of cool things to see and do while you’re in Panama. The country isn’t exactly a destination for adventure biking, but it’s still well worth checking out some of Panama’s best attractions.

The Panama Canal

While you’re in Panama City shipping your motorcycle, it’s worth taking time out to explore the historic Casco Viejo and the famous Panama Canal. You can ride across the famous Bridge of the Americas and visit the Panama Canal Visitor Centre to see how the canal works. But the centre is expensive and often crowded, so an alternative is to just ride along the canal to find a viewpoint and watch the boats go past like we did.

Panama Canal

Visit an indigenous tribe

We visited the Embera tribe on a day tour from Panama City and highly recommend it. There’s a lot of info on this one so we wrote a dedicated guide for it.

Nestled in the highlands, Boquete is a beautiful little place with stunning mountain scenery, coffee plantations, and trails like the Quetzal Trail and Volcán Barú.

Bocas del Toro

If you’ve got the time, check out Bocas! It’s an archipelago with beautiful beaches, clear waters, and Caribbean culture. Explore Isla Colón, Isla Bastimentos, and nearby beaches.

San Blas Islands

No doubt you’ve heard of the San Blas Islands. It’s a group of over 300 islands with gorgeous beaches and crystal-clear waters. You can also experience indigenous Kuna culture and pristine natural beauty.

A small, charming town known for more coffee plantations and natural beauty. It’s worth visiting if you want an authentic Panamanian experience.

El Valle de Antón

A picturesque valley in an extinct volcanic caldera. The best places to see here are the El Macho Waterfall and hot springs.

Azuero Peninsula

Experience traditional Panamanian culture, beaches, and festivals in towns like Pedasí and Las Tablas.

Riding gear

We always recommend choosing an ultra-lightweight, breathable and well-vented adventure riding suit – and one that is not waterproof. Pack a cheap and light set of throwover waterproofs in case it rains. The aim of the game here is a layering system. It can get exceptionally hot and exceptionally wet in Panama so you want to be in well vented kit with easy access waterproof.

SIM card –  The easiest way to access data while in Panama is to use the Airalo app and simply download an eSIM onto your phone. That way you’ll have data and can set it up ready before you’ve even entered the country.

Police –  As mentioned, police armed with speed camera guns line the highways waiting for speeding vehicles. Obey the laws here or expect to be pulled over.

Passport –  Your original passport (not a copy) must be carried with you at all times, even if popping to the shops on foot.

Time –  Don’t rush in and out of Panama, it has a lot to offer and is worth spending a little longer in.
