The Tijuca Forest covers an area of approximately 3,972 hectares and is located in the West Zone of Rio de Janeiro , encompassing parts of the neighborhoods of Tijuca, Barra da Tijuca, and Jacarepaguá .
The Tijuca Forest was created in the mid-19th century as part of a reforestation project initiated by Emperor Pedro II to combat massive deforestation in the region. Much of the land was transformed into coffee plantations , and the project sought to recover the area with native species of the Atlantic Forest which is now home to an incredible diversity of flora and fauna. It is estimated that there are around 1,600 species of plants, many of which are endemic to the region. In addition, a variety of animals can be found, such as monkeys, sloths, toucans, butterflies, and snakes , among others.
Within the Tijuca Forest , there are several popular attractions for visitors. Among them are the Taunay waterfall , the Parque Lage viewpoint, Pico da Tijuca (the highest mountain in the park with 1,022 meters), the Christ The Redeemer viewpoint , and the famous Pedra Bonita trail, from where you can practice activities like paragliding and hang gliding.
