Tholpetty wildlife jeep safari

Since it was Sunday morning there was a long queue at the starting point of Tholpetty safari. The Jeep and tickets for the safari came up to 1300 or so for 5 of us. Reached at the counter at 6:45 and got out only by 8 pm or so. The staff and systems at the counter are very basic and really struggle to manager the crowd. Our jeep left into the forest trail only by 9:15 . Since 10 jeeps had already run thru the trail all the animals had scattered deeper and we could only see a giant squirrel, and an elephant from far. In fact on the way to wayanad in our car we found bison, herds of deer and a wonderful elephant . So if you are not in the first jeep into the forest , you might as well skip the Safari itself. We also learnt from the jeep driver and Nov-Dec is a better time as you may even spot a Tiger as it is their mating season.

This sanctuary is bordered with Nagarhole & Bandipur in Karnataka and Mudumalai in Tamilnadu and spread around of 350 sq km.The sanctuary is divided into two ranges Tholpetty and Muthanga. To visit sanctuary you can go to either Tholpetty or Muthanga. The forest department has arranged one hour jeep safari into the sanctuary from the entrance at both Tholpetty and Muthanga. The tickets for Safari are issued at Forest office and there is no advance and tickets are issued on first come first serve basis. Ensure you reach booking counter at least 1 hour in advance in weekdays and 2 hr for weekend and holidays. The safaris are arranged in the morning 7am (40 jeeps ) and evening 3 pm (20 jeeps). After taking the entry fee for the sanctuary (110 of adults and 40 of kids), guide will take you jeep (cost for jeep 600 is separate). The jeeps run through a fixed trail in the forest. Elephants, Spotted Deers, Sambar, Mangoose, Gaurs & Peacocks are common wildlife spotted in the sanctuary. Need luck to see rare animals like Tiger are frequently sighted in the early morning safari. 1.Stay near Sanctuary eg. Mananthavady for Tholpetty and Sulthan Bathery for Muthanga so you can reach early. 2.There is no guarantee to get tickets. I went to Tholpetty Sunday afternoon around 12pm. There are 20 jeeps allowed. I was third in the queue and first two persons came by bus and tempo travelers and book 10 and 5 jeeps. I took a jeep. Effectively 4 jeeps are left for entire queue. 3.Once you reach there, count the queue with jeeps they require. If it is not feasible go for some other place and comeback later. 4.First three jeeps can see some rare animals and after noise of these jeeps all move out. Its bumpy and shaky ride. We saw elephant, barking deer, sambar deer, monkeys & lot spotted deer and quite few birds. Guide and Driver helpful. They showed as pug marks of Tiger and pack of dhole. Don’t expect Tigers and leopards, my safari was better the Mudumalai WLS which we gone earlier.

We had planned two drives here but were told to only other with one y our homestay owners as its better to go out first thing in the morning. We arrived before 7 am to get in the queue for the first jeep out so as to maximise the chance of seeing the elephants and large cats. We were just the two of us in the first jeep and the driver and guide were very helpful trying to spot the animals as they were experienced at knowing where to look. However there are constant jeeps doing the same route and quite close together so its important to be first out before the animals are disturbed. We saw bison, monkeys, eagles, lots of deer, and finally elephants in the distance but sadly no cats. It is very reasonable even though foreigners are charged more than indians, we paid 700 rupees for the two adults.Would recommend.

It is a nice place full of greenery.. lots and lots of butterflies are flying.. You must go in early morning.. to get full worth of this place.. We had seen deer , elephants..

Superb ride Sunday funday wid friends 👬👬 elephant 🐘 spotted nd cluster of deer 🦌🦌🦌 Nature love ❤️ nd scenic..!!😉👌👌

We expected to see a few animals, as per that suggested by the guide, however all we saw were dears and monkeys. The path that led us in was beautiful and green.

Exploring a destination...

The joy of travel comes in exploring new things. Planting your feet somewhere you’ve never been before brings with it the rush of discovery and the joy of pushing back on the boundaries of your world.

But when one does arrive at that fresh frontier, there are ways better than others to begin your journey of discovery. Follow these steps and see the world with a new light.

• Discover a new city through a food tour. Food tour’s are the easiest way to take a tour, learn about the local delicacies, and the best of all, get great tips that aren’t just “local” tips for tourists, but sometimes, lessons for a lifetime too

• Use Public Transportation. When you are in a new city, you can possibly see places and people that you wouldn’t normally see when simply walking to the places that checks your list. Some buses or rails take you to parts of the city you wouldn’t get to see otherwise. Whilst using public transportation, just ensure that you are following the local norms and do remember to watch the locals!

• Find a local festival. Go beyond what other tourists might do while visiting a place. Look for the unique things you would want to do. Use social media or the local tourism website to find out what’s going on locally. You may have to move out of the center of the city to do some of the less popular but more unique things, so just keep that in mind!
