The Grand Canyon is truly massive (277 river miles long and up to 18 miles wide!), which helps explain why so many people feel the urge to see it in person.

In 2022, 4.7 million people visited, making the Grand Canyon the second-most popular national park in the country (behind Great Smoky Mountain Nationals Park). Established in 1919, the park offers activities for all ability levels, whether you want to do an intense hike down into the canyon and sleep under the stars (with a backcountry permit, of course) or simply want to saunter along the South Rim Trail, an easy walking path with views that wow.

14. New York, New York

New York City Manhattan

As the saying goes, New York City is “the city that never sleeps” — and you won’t want to either when you visit, lest you run out of time to take it all in.

Be sure to check out newer attractions, like the High Line (an elevated park) and Hudson Yards (a mega-mall along the Hudson River), but also make time for some New York City classics, like catching a Broadway show or standing under the lights of Times Square.

Though it’s somewhat difficult to get to this small island nation southwest of Sri Lanka, that also means it’s incredibly private and secluded, which makes it the perfect spot for a honeymoon or romantic beach getaway.

And don’t worry about getting bored, either — explore the water by snorkeling or scuba diving, relax in the spa or wander around the bustling Male’ Fish Market.

Soccer, architecture, shopping, nightlife, world-class food and wine, arts and culture — is there anything Barcelona doesn’t have? If there is, we honestly can't think what it would be.

This cosmopolitan Spanish city is home to some awe-inspiring architecture, including several buildings designed by Antoni Gaudi, so be sure to book tours of his whimsical creations like Park Guell and the yet-to-be-finished Church of the Sacred Family (La Sagrada Familia).

For nightlife and shopping, Las Ramblas is always bustling; for an enriching arts experience, follow the progression of famed artist Pablo Picasso at Museo Picasso.

9. Tokyo, Japan

Akihabara Tokyo

The Japanese capital is one of the most exciting cities on the entire planet. It is notoriously fast-paced, with neon lights illuminating the multitudes that are constantly rushing to their next destination.

This island in southern Thailand, which is just an hour flight from Bangkok, is surrounded by the Andaman Sea, so white sandy beaches abound. If a stunning sunset is what you’re after, head to Promthep Cape, the southernmost point on the island and a popular spot for photo-ops. For views of the island and beyond, climb to the top of the massive alabaster statue called Big Buddha.

You can even learn something during your vacation by visiting the Soi Dog Foundation, an innovative animal shelter that’s fighting the meat trade and taking care of the thousands of stray cats and dogs in the area.

Rome, Colosseum

Though Rome’s historic significance cannot be overstated, don’t assume that this Italian city is stuck in the past. On the contrary, you’ll find posh storefronts and luxurious hotels not far from iconic structures like the Pantheon (built in 120 AD) and the Colosseum (built in 80 AD).

And then, of course, there’s the city’s art. Stroll through Rome, and you’ll stumble upon some of the greatest treasures the world has ever seen — an astonishing collection of frescoes, paintings, ceilings and fountains created by icons like Michelangelo, Caravaggio, Raphael and Bernini.

After all that exploration, take advantage of ample opportunities to eat and drink, including at several Michelin-starred restaurants. City staples include suppli (deep-fried balls of risotto, mozzarella and ragu meat sauce) and cacio e pepe (a deceptively simple mix of al-dente pasta, pecorino romano and fresh black pepper).

What to Know Before You Go to Rome

6. London, England

Modern bridge London

English writer Samual Johnson once said, “When a man is tired of London, he is tired of life.”

From live performances of Shakespeare to truly world-class (and free!) museums like the National Gallery, London will enrich your mind and enliven your senses. Of course, no visit would be complete without a stop at Buckingham Palace to see the famous stone-faced guards outside and the 19 lavish State Rooms inside (though, unfortunately, you can’t see the queen’s private quarters). Another must-see landmark is the Tower of London, the historic castle on the north side of the River Thames.

5. Tahiti, French Polynesia

Tahiti, French Polynesia

Flavorful French cuisine, top-notch resorts, warm waters — need we say more? Though Tahiti can be pricey, travelers say it’s so worth it.

The largest of the 118 French Polynesian islands, Tahiti is split into two main regions (connected by a land bridge). Tahiti Nui, the larger region, is home to the island’s capital Papeete and surfing hotspot Papenoo Beach, while Tahiti Iti, the smaller region, offers more seclusion and the bright white sands of La Plage de Maui.

4. Maui, Hawaii

Rocky beach in Maui

If you’re short on time or you just can’t decide which Hawaiian island to visit, Maui is right in the sweet spot: not too big, not too small, but just right.

There are five regions to explore on Maui, including the popular West Maui and South Maui, home to some of the island’s best-known attractions and beaches (Wailea Beach is in South Maui, for example). But don’t overlook East Maui, where you can travel along the Road to Hana, or the Upcountry, where you can explore the world’s largest dormant volcano, Haleakala.

Fun fact: How’s this for a selling point? Maui has more beach than any other Hawaiian island — 60 miles of it, with red, white and black sand.

3. Bora Bora, French Polynesia

Bora Bora overwater bungalows

Don’t write off the French Polynesian island of Bora Bora just because of its size. Though it’s a little more than 2 miles wide and just 6 miles long, Bora Bora packs in an abundance of natural beauty. To start, you won’t be able to take your eyes off the island’s turquoise lagoon surrounded by lush jungle.

If you’re looking for more than relaxation on your trip, consider hiking or booking a 4X4 tour of Mount Otemanu, part of an extinct volcano that rises 2,400 feet above the lagoon. You can also snorkel among the coral reef of Coral Gardens, where you might catch a glimpse of reef sharks, eels and stingrays.

Because of its remoteness, flying into Bora Bora Airport will be quite a journey, no matter where you're departing from. But you'll forget everything as soon as you see this Polynesian paradise that is beautiful beyond words.

What to Know Before You Go to Bora Bora

Bora Bora Island

Paris has it all — incredible cuisine, legendary landmarks and centuries of history. Those are just some of the reasons it’s the second-best place to visit in the world.

Though you’ll want to spend your time hitting up popular tourist spots like the Eiffel Tower and the Musee d’Orsay, you should also carve out time to explore other parts of Paris — the city’s 20 diverse neighborhoods, called arrondissements, for instance. Standouts include the 2nd arrondissement, which touts covered passages and some of the city’s hippest restaurants, and the romantic 18th arrondissement, with charming squares, cafes and bars, set apart from the city’s more tourist-packed areas.

1. South Island, New Zealand

Milford Sound

South Island, the larger but less populated of the two islands that make up New Zealand, earn this top-spot honor for its gorgeous scenery, adrenelin-pumping experiences and affordability.

The 33.5-mile hike on Milford Sound, which is limited to 90 people at a time, is considered one of the world’s best treks, with stops at Lake Te Anau, suspension bridges, a mountain pass and the tallest waterfall in the country, Sutherland Falls.

For a heart-pumping experience, you can jump out of a helicopter while flying over the Harris Mountains with skis on your feet. Still not satisfied? Roam Fiordland National Park, a UNESCO World Heritage area, and explore the Fox and Franz Josef Glaciers, two of the most accessible glaciers in the world.

What to Know Before You Go to New Zealand

The world’s most popular tourist attractions have a gravity all their own, pulling millions into their orbits each year. There’s no one formula that drives the demand either; some spots rely on natural beauty to inspire awe—and visits—and others feel like the center of the universe, drawing curious eyes from around the globe.

Forbes , Travel + Leisure , and U.K.-based TravelSupermarket have all done the numbers and come up with definitive lists of the most popular tourist attractions. Using these tallies as a springboard, we’re excited to bring you a snapshot of some of the standouts, from the world’s most popular public park (any guesses?) to the theme park that beats all others (are you surprised?) and the globe’s most visited palace (hint: if you see William and Kate there, it’s only because they’re on vacation).

The numbers don’t lie—these spots are among the most popular in the world—but they also don’t tell the whole story. So along the way, be sure to jump in with your own favorites in the comments section.

Times Square, New York City, New York

Times Square, New York City, New York

Most Popular: Public space

What it's Got: Flashing signs, crowds, stores, restaurants, theaters, and hot-dog carts—everything that makes New York New York.

Why You Should Go: As the single most popular tourist attraction on the planet, Times Square lives up to its claim as the "Crossroads of the World." That alone makes it worth checking out.

Why You Shouldn't Go: New York City has so much more to offer.

Central Park, New York City, New York

Central Park, New York City, New York

Most Popular: Public park

What it's Got: Central Park offers ponds, woodlands, gardens, playgrounds, statues, and restaurants, as well as a carousel, a castle, and a zoo, on 843 acres of Manhattan.

Why You Should Go: You can choose from hundreds of activities set against an unexpectedly convincing pastoral backdrop. And your lungs enjoy the break from all the traffic fumes of the surrounding city.

Why You Shouldn't Go: Honestly, there are very few reasons not to go, though you may prefer to stick to daytime strolls. (However, the park has become much safer at night in recent years.)

Forbidden City, Beijing, China

Forbidden City, Beijing, China

Most Popular: Palace

What it's Got: As the world's largest palace complex, the Forbidden City has nearly 10,000 rooms full of the furniture and art of the Ming and Qing dynasties.

Why You Should Go: The scale and grandeur of the Forbidden City can't really be described; it's one to be experienced first-hand.

Why You Shouldn't Go: The Forbidden City can get extremely crowded, especially during Golden Week holidays in fall and winter. Expect the sort of congestion where you'll be lucky to see much except the back of other people's heads.

Walt Disney World, Florida

Walt Disney World, Florida

Most Popular: Theme park

What it's Got: Six individual theme parks in one super park. Disney World's Magic Kingdom alone beats out all other theme parks in the world to be the most visited on earth.

Why You Should Go: Walt Disney World makes its name as the "most magical place on earth," with options for all ages and interests, as long as those interests include theme parks. For many families, it's a rite of passage, and it's one of the only places where having breakfast with a mouse is a good thing.

Why You Shouldn't Go: Long lines, high humidity, and the inevitability of witnessing dozens of public sugar-crash tantrums—from both adults and children.

Notre Dame Cathedral, Paris, France

Notre Dame Cathedral, Paris, France

Most Popular: Religious building

What it's Got: Nearly 850 years of history, some of the world's most impressive stained-glass windows, flying buttresses, and views of Paris from the South Tower.

Why You Should Go: Cathedrale Notre Dame de Paris is a magnificent feat of architecture and construction set in one of the world's most beautiful cities.

Why You Shouldn't Go: The long lines and conveyor-belt river of tourists pouring through the cathedral offers few chances to pause and really admire the beauty of the place.

Faneuil Hall Marketplace, Boston, Massachusetts

Faneuil Hall Marketplace, Boston, Massachusetts

Most Popular: Market

What it's Got: Faneuil Hall has nearly 50 shops, dozens of food stalls, and 14 full-service restaurants housed in three restored 19th-century buildings in downtown Boston.

Why You Should Go: Beating out Istanbul's Grand Bazaar and Seattle's Pike Place as the most popular market on the planet, the 250-year-old gathering place offers a mix of free entertainment, window-shopping opportunities, and food that's easy on all budgets.

Why You Shouldn't Go: The carnival atmosphere and increasing number of chain stores masks some of the market's historical charm.

Las Vegas Strip, Las Vegas, Nevada

Las Vegas Strip, Las Vegas, Nevada

Most Popular: Gaming hot spot

What it's Got: The Vegas Strip delivers 24-hour action, high stakes, all-night buffets and celebrity-chef restaurants, shows, and (in the warmer months) a serious pool scene.

Why You Should Go: While it borrows inspiration from around the world (you'll find the canals of Venice, the Eiffel Tower, and the Empire State Building), the Strip is an utterly unique phenomenon everyone should experience at least once. Whether you're a gambler or not, there are always dozens of activities to sweep you up.

Why You Shouldn't Go: Las Vegas can be a strange and exhausting place, especially if you have a low tolerance for flash.

Niagara Falls, U.S. And Canada

Niagara Falls, U.S. And Canada

Most Popular: Natural wonder

What it's Got: Water, and a lot of it. Over 700,000 gallons of water plunge over the falls each second. Visitors can see the different individual falls from lookouts on the Canadian and U.S. sides, or get a different view with helicopter or boat tours.

Why You Should Go: The thunderous falls are impressive in a way that can't be captured on film. And a concerted effort on both sides of the border to class things up a bit has yielded options for visitors looking for more than a motel and a burger.

Why You Shouldn't Go: There's no disputing the majesty of the falls, but unless your kitsch tolerance is high, the tacky souvenir shops and tourist attractions close to the action can get old fast.

Great Smoky Mountains National Park, North Carolina And Tennessee

Great Smoky Mountains National Park, North Carolina And Tennessee

Most Popular: National park

What it's Got: Mountains and forests spanning two states, 800 miles of maintained trails, 1,500 bears, and a rich diversity of plant and animal life.

Why You Should Go: It's free! Great Smoky Mountains National Park is one of the few major national parks that doesn't charge an entry fee. With scenic drives, backcountry camping, and everything in between, the park is suitable for a wide range of abilities.

Why You Shouldn't Go: At its best, a national park offers beauty and a bit of solitude, but Great Smoky Mountains' popularity can mean crowds and traffic, particularly on summer and fall weekends.

Victoria Peak, Hong Kong

Victoria Peak, Hong Kong

Most Popular: Scenic outlook

What it's Got: One of the world's most scenic funicular railways, which leads to a panoramic lookout of Hong Kong at 1,300 feet above sea level.

Why You Should Go: A thrillingly steep ride up the mountain yields temperatures on the Peak that are cooler than you'll find down in the city. And on clear days and evenings, visitors are rewarded with amazing views of Hong Kong, water, and outlying islands.

Why You Shouldn't Go: Long tram lines getting to and from the Peak can be a drag. Air pollution or fog often obscures the amazing views. And a fear of heights can turn getting to and being at the Peak into an exercise in panic.

Day Trip Tips

10 Most Visited Tourist Attractions in the World

By: Author Kristi

When planning a trip to a new destination, you might find it helpful to know the most visited tourist attractions in the world. These are the places that should be on everyone’s bucket list.

Most Visited Tourist Attractions in the World

According to Trip Advisor, Italy tops out as one of the most visited tourist attractions in the world, with three of the top 10 sites that people travel to! It is easy to see why with its rich history, architecture, museums, and of course, food!

France comes in second place with popular tourist attractions that are on everyone’s bucket list!

What surprised me most with this list is that there are absolutely no Asian destinations anywhere on the list!

Nor will you find Iceland listed in the top 10, which has become a really HOT tourist spot in the last few years.

Top Tourist Attractions for 2024

If you are hoping to plan a trip this year and wondering what places are the most popular, check out these 10 most visited tourist attractions in the world:

Colloseum in Rome

1. The Colosseum in Rome, Italy

Topping off the list of most popular tourist attractions is the Colosseum which is no big surprise for those with it on their bucket list.

While a significant landmark in Rome, for those that have been & seen it in person, I must say that while impressive, it is not near as excellent a site as The Roman Forum (which didn’t even make the top 10!).

Wondering what else you should see in Rome? Check out our list of favorite Rome sites .

Louvre Museum in Paris France

2. The Louvre Museum in Paris, France

While known as one of the most impressive museums in the world, the Louvre was originally built as a fortress and later reconstructed to serve as a royal palace.

The massive complex that sits on the banks of the Seine is something to behold inside & out.

No trip to Paris is complete without a visit to the Louvre to see such popular pieces as the Mona Lisa, Venus de Milo, & Hammurabi’s Code.

What You'll find in St. Peter's Square

3. The Vatican Museums in Rome, Italy

I can totally see why the Vatican Museums made this list!

Filled with some of the most amazing art in the world, this is definitely a destination that everyone should make especially if they are already planning a trip to Rome.

Those looking to plan a trip to Vatican City from Rome will find it an incredible day trip!

Statue of Liberty in New York

4. The Statue of Liberty in New York City

Those visiting New York City will want to make sure to take the time to see the Statue of Liberty .

This famous Landmark for the United States was designed by French sculptor Frédéric Bartholdi and was a gift from France to the United States.

While you can take the FREE Staten Island Ferry to get a great view of the Statue of Liberty, those who want to visit Ellis Island must book a ticket in advance that includes transportation.

During a trip to Ellis Island, you will see the original torch Bartholdi constructed (it had to be replaced due to damage) along with other artifacts in the museum.

Eiffel Tower France

5. The Eiffel Tower in Paris, France

Quite possibly the most recognizable landmark in the world, the Eiffel Tower is a site to behold.

Visible from many points in Paris, there is nothing quite like seeing it up close in person.

You can sit in the park and gaze at the structure from below or take in the sites of Paris from one of three platforms on the Eiffel Tower itself for a fee.

You can also climb the Eiffel Tower and see Paris from various platforms. The views are amazing.

6. Basilica de la Sagrada Familia in Barcelona, Spain

If there is one cathedral in the world to see, it is the Sagrada Familia in Barcelona. Built by renowned architect Antoni Gaudí, this Basilica is a work of art inside and out.

Gaudí wanted to construct a church that would make an impact on the skyline, and the Sagrada Familia certainly does so as it is one of the tallest religious buildings in the world.

While still under construction (due to be completed in 2026), it has been a work in progress for over 130 years and is something you should experience in your life no matter if it is completed or not.

Check out these other Gaudi Landmarks in Barcelona .

Jackson Square New Orleans

7. French Quarter, New Orleans, Louisiana

The heart of New Orleans is the French Quarter and it is easy to see why this would be one of the top 10 destinations in the world!

There is no other place in the United States quite like it. The home of street jazz, creole cuisine, and Mardi Gras, this place has it all!

But it isn’t all parties, booze, and music, it has history, art & architecture as well.

And when it comes to couples getaways, there are so many romantic things to do in New Orleans.

Venture off Bourbon Street and you will find artists painting portraits and landscapes in Jackson Square.

Then head to The Garden District to see examples of New Orleans’ antebellum past.

Anne Frank House in Amsterdam

8. Anne Frank House, Amsterdam, Netherlands

Even if you have never read The Diary of Anne Frank, you probably know that she and her family once live in the attic of a home in Amsterdam.

You can visit The Anne Frank House and see the attic in which she lived along with the bookcase, family photographs, and Anne’s original diary.

the world's top 10 tourist attractions

9. Skydeck- Willis Tower, Chicago, Illinois

The Skydeck is on the 103rd floor of the Willis Tower in Chicago.

While it seems easy enough to take the elevator up to the floor and look out, what makes this famous landmark a place thrill seekers go is The Ledge.

The Ledge is a glass balcony that extends out of the building.

While it may seem harmless enough, this platform has already cracked from the weight of so many people. It has been repaired, but who knows if it might happen again!

The Grand Canal in Venice, Italy.

10. The Grand Canal in Venice, Italy.

The third Italian site on the list of Popular Tourist Attractions in the World is a favorite among honeymooners and couples looking for a romantic getaway.

The Grand Canal serves as the main street (albeit water) in Venice and connects most of Venice’s top tourist attractions as it winds through the city.

While most think of Gondola rides (and you certainly should take one), the easiest way to get from one place to another is on a Vaporetto water bus,

Venice’s floating public transport system. It gives you a great view of all the most popular sites along the Grand Canal.

Take a look at what you can see in Venice in a day !

Most Visited Places in the World

We’ve been to many of the places on this list of most popular tourist attractions in the World and I have to say that they are certainly great sites to experience! If you are looking for more information about day trips to take, please feel free to browse our list of destinations .

The 10 best places to visit in Vietnam in 2024

the world's top 10 tourist attractions

With its rolling emerald landscapes, perfect beaches and energetic cities, Vietnam is unsurprisingly a magnet for visitors in search of an incredible travel experience.

This country is teeming with attractions, so it pays to plan your trip around the places you absolutely can't miss. Where you want to go will influence whether you fly into cultured Hanoi in the north or energetic Ho Chi Minh City (HCMC) in the south, or whether you bypass these two megacities for the laid-back beaches of tropical Phu Quoc.

Start your travel to-do list now with our ten favorite places to visit in Vietnam.

People splash around in the turquoise water of a beautiful island

1. Phu Quoc

Best for beach lovers

About as far south as you can get from Hanoi without splashing into the Gulf of Thailand, the island of Phu Quoc is where beach worshippers come to pray. Lapped by jewel-blue waters and edged by fine sandy beaches, this is a place to slip into low gear, reaching for a cocktail as the ember-colored sun dips into the bay.

But it's far from undiscovered – local tourists come in droves for theme park thrills at VinWonders and giddying views over the sea from the world's longest over-sea cable car. Phu Quoc is a popular stop for families, and if you fancy a change from the tourist scene, there are dense jungles to explore inland from the sand.

Planning tip: If you're bound for Phu Quoc, there's no need to go via Hanoi and HCMC; numerous Asian airlines offer flights from hubs such as Bangkok, Kuala Lumpur and Seoul, connecting with long-haul flights further afield.

Best for city slickers

Every trip has to start somewhere, and the ideal point of arrival for first-timers is Vietnam's historic capital. As well as easy infrastructure, inexpensive accommodation, world-class dining and more history than you'll ever have time to take in, Hanoi is the leaping-off point for the islands and outcrops around Halong Bay and the forest-draped trails of the mountainous northwest. Give yourself time to graze through Vietnam's catalog of street food treats  and pause to soak up the atmosphere in cozy cafes in the Old Quarter as well as rush around the sights.

Planning tip: To enjoy Hanoi nightlife on a budget, swing by the streetside bia hoi (draft beer) stalls at busy Bia Hoi Junction on the drinking strip of P Ta Hein.

A woman in a kayak holds her oar above her head as she floats along in a peaceful bay

3. Lan Ha Bay and Bai Tu Long Bay

Best for iconic photos

The crowds mob Halong Bay , but for our money, the shimmering bays to the north and south have a slight edge over Vietnam's most famous collection of outcrops and islands. While trips to Halong Bay are highly commercialized, with motorized luxury junks blowing diesel fumes around the eroded karst islands, Lan Ha Bay  and Bai Tu Long Bay  are a bit more laid-back, and you won't have quite so many cruise ships in your photos. Try kayaking between the outcrops, explore the tropical trails on Cat Ba Island – gateway to Lan Ha Bay – or kick back on the sand on Bai Tu Long's idyllic Co To Island.

Planning tip: If you visit Cat Ba Island, take time to explore the trails around Cat Ba National Park – if you trek with your own guide, it's easy to leave the crowds behind.

4. Ho Chi Minh City

Best for a sense of the past

Cosmopolitan Ho Chi Minh City (HCMC) is the southern counterweight to Hanoi in the north, taking its cultural cues from the Mekong Delta and neighboring Cambodia . It's fast-paced, frenetic and fun, particularly after dark, when the pavements transform into a mobile buffet of street food stalls and roadside bars.

A little of the frontier feel of the war years lives on in HCMC, and you can learn more about this violent period at sites such as the War Remnants Museum . The ghosts of French Indochina linger too – set aside some time to wander past the city's colonial-era landmarks, then settle into a coffee shop with a drip-brewed ca phi .

Planning tip: For a break from the city crush, swing out to nearby Tay Ninh, where the Cao Dai Holy See offers a fascinating introduction to the all-embracing Cao Dai religion.

A handful of yellow and red tents can be seen erected on a sand bar near the entrance to a cave

5. Phong Nha-Ke Bang National Park

Best for unique experiences

Vietnam's biggest natural attraction – literally – is Hang Son Doong Cave, the largest cavern in the world by volume and a true wonder. An entire New York City block could fit inside its vast main passage, but this monster cavern is only accessible on expensive guided treks.

The good news is that  Phong Nha-Ke Bang National Park  is pockmarked with caverns that you can clamber, crawl, boat or zipline through for a fraction of the cost. Trips to the Tu Lan, Phong Nha and Paradise caves are possible on a shoestring budget; more cash will buy access to Hang En, where trekkers set up tents on an underground beach, illuminated by shafts of natural light.

Best for history

A stay in harmonious Hoi An is a journey into Vietnam's lavish, layered past. This was once one of the most important ports in Asia, and traders from as far afield as Japan, Spain and North America filled the pockets of its merchants with gold. Locals used their money wisely, packing the Old Town with teetering shophouses, tea warehouses, fanciful covered bridges, elaborate Chinese guildhalls, and colorful Confucian and Buddhist pagodas. History is only the beginning – many travelers stay for days, learning to make white rose dumplings and summer rolls on chef-led cooking courses, and ordering made-to-measure suits and gowns from the city's modestly priced tailors' shops.

Planning tip: For a change of pace, head inland from Hoi An and spend a night in a friendly community homestay in the Co Tu minority village of Bho Hoong.

An aerial view of the beach of Nha Trang. The beach runs right alongside the city, with a number of skyscrapers and modern buildings visible just behind the golden sands.

7. The Central Beaches

Best for sun-seekers

Sandy bays stud Vietnam's central coastline, but the mood varies widely from beach to beach. Package tourists flock to high-rise Danang  and Nha Trang – famed as military R&R stops during the American War – but we rate the calmer beaches along the coast, where a little of Vietnam's old seaside charm still endures. To the south of Nha Trang, Mui Ne is a lively kitesurfing hub following a string of sandy coves, while Doc Let Beach to the north serves up 18km (11 miles) of sand, surf and seafood. For a quieter experience, hit the coast between Hue and Danang – Thuan An is the gateway to a string of serene and sandy beaches flanking a lagoon-backed barrier island.

Best for imperial history

The former capital of the Nguyen dynasty – which ruled over large parts of Vietnam, Laos and Cambodia in the 19th and 20th centuries – drips with imperial history, despite the ravages of US bombers during the American War. Much was lost in Hue , but the grandeur of dynastic Vietnam lives on in the Citadel and Imperial Enclosure , housing the emperor's residence, temples, palaces and court. At one time, entering without permission would bring instant death. Just outside town are the tombs of Vietnam's greatest emperors, resting serenely in green compounds beside the Perfume River. Another relic of royal rule is Hue's imperial cuisine – arguably the finest in the country – try a spicy bowl of bun bo Hue (vermicelli noodle soup) or a crispy banh khoai pancake, and you'll see what we mean.

Planning tip: To stay one step ahead of the crowds at Hue's imperial tombs and rent a motorcycle or scooter to explore; don't miss the Thien Mu Pagoda on your way out of the city.

An empty boat floats along in Ba Be National Park. Beyond the boat the shimmering still waters of the lake is visible, which is backed by numerous mountains, most of which are covered in forest.

9. Ba Be National Park

Best for lake and forest scenery

Vietnam has more than 30 national parks , taking in everything from coastal swamps to mountain jungles, but some are firmly on the tourist trail, and the crowds can be an impediment to spotting wildlife. That's less of a problem in lovely Ba Be National Park , where trails weave between the limestone peaks to Hmong, Tay and Dzao villages, and boat and kayak trips cross serene lakes hemmed in by forested ridges, creating scenes worthy of a medieval woodcut. The park is a haven for everything from macaques and langur monkeys to rare black bears, scaly pangolins and the spectacular crested serpent eagle.

Planning tip: Comfy accommodation in village homes completes the sense of stepping off the mainstream tourist circuit. For an intimate homestay experience, check out the family-run guesthouses in Pac Ngoi village, accessible by bus from Hanoi, via the village of Cho Don.

10. Ha Giang

Best for mountain views

Trekking to the minority villages in the hills around Sapa  is one of Vietnam's top draws, but the country's trekking capital feels rather commercialized these days. Hikers have to walk further every year to find the rural idyll that first drew people to the northwest.

For scenic countryside without the company, remote Ha Giang  province is Vietnam's new frontier. Staying in simple village homestays, you can hike out to minority villages and rice terraces tucked between the soaring limestone peaks, and motor (or pedal) over some of Vietnam's most spectacular passes. You'll want to take plenty of photos on the winding mountain road between Ha Giang town, Dong Van and Meo Vac.

Planning tip: If you're confident in the saddle, motorcycles can easily be rented in Ha Giang town – just ride slowly and be ready for rainy conditions!

Ranked: The 20 best attractions in the U.S.

A new study ranks the U.S. attractions that are definitely worth visiting

Aerial view of the Central park in New York with golf fields and tall skyscrapers surrounding the park.

Wherever you’re traveling in the U.S., you’ll want to know which attractions are worth your time and which are OK to skip. A new study by BookRetreats ranks the best U.S. attractions for tourists, offering insight you can use when planning your next trip.

To determine this all-important ranking, the global retreat platform examined 77 of the nation's most popular attractions, analyzing factors like popularity, overall experience, affordability, and safety. The verdict? New York—not surprisingly—reigns supreme as the ultimate tourist destination, boasting seven of the top 20 spots, including the coveted number one.

Topping the list of the best tourist attractions in the U.S. is Central Park, which scored a stellar 4.075 out of 5 for tourist appeal. This sprawling urban oasis is a crowd favorite, racking up a 4.8 rating on Google and over 270,000 reviews—the highest in the study. Visitors rave about its beauty and wealth of free activities, with 91 percent of recent guests singing its praises.

Coming in second with a score of 3.994 out of 5 is the National Mall in Washington D.C. This historic hub draws visitors to landmarks like the Washington Monument, Lincoln Memorial and the National Museum of African American History and Culture. Budget travelers rave about the free entry, and nearby three-star hotels average just $129.80 per night for two.

Surprisingly, some lesser-known New York spots outshone the city’s more iconic landmarks. The High Line and Brooklyn Bridge Park left the Empire State Building and the Statue of Liberty in the dust, earning top marks for visitor experience out of all 77 attractions.

On the other hand, the ranking calls out the attractions most likely to leave tourists underwhelmed. The shocking news is that 70 percent of the bottom picks are theme parks. SeaWorld, Disneyland, and Six Flags all tanked in the rankings, but it’s the Hollywood Walk of Fame that takes the crown for being the worst U.S. attraction. Scoring rock-bottom for experience (0.68/2) and popularity (0.42/1), 20 percent of visitors summed it up as "dirty" and "run down."

17 Top-Rated Tourist Attractions in Sweden

Written by Andrew Birbeck and Lura Seavey Updated Apr 13, 2023

With its rich history and varied landscapes, Sweden is a traveler's paradise and a photographer's dream. If you love outdoor attractions, it's certainly hard to beat. The air and water are crystal clean, and there are thousands of acres of unspoiled forests and majestic lakes to explore, not to mention vast archipelagos along its coasts.

The roads and public transport are excellent; the citizens are invariably friendly and helpful; and in recent years, Swedish cuisine has undergone what can only be described as a revolution. Throw in a mind-boggling history, from notorious Viking invaders to royal dynasties and imperial intrigue, and one thing is certain: you'll never be bored.

Sweden's tourist attractions range from opulent palaces and ancient towns to vast Arctic landscapes and the famed Ice Hotel. There are so many things to do that you'll want to allow plenty of time to enjoy all its outdoor adventures and historic treasures.

To help you pinpoint the best places to visit in this much-loved Scandinavian country, we've pulled together our list of the top attractions in Sweden.

Gamla Stan, Stockholm

Vasa museum, stockholm, drottningholm palace, lovö, the göta canal, gothenburg to stockholm, kiruna and the ice hotel, lapland, skansen and djurgården, stockholm, visby, gotland, stockholm city hall, liseberg theme park, gothenburg, kärnan & the fredriksdal open-air museum, helsingborg, oresund bridge, malmö, domkyrka (uppsala cathedral), uppsala, stockholm archipelago, stromma boat tours, abisko national park, lapland, lund cathedral, abba the museum, map of tourist attractions in sweden.

Gamla Stan

Stockholm's Old Town, known as Gamla Stan, is a small concentrated area where the city began in the middle of the 13th century.

Much of the medieval enclave remains, although in typical Scandinavian style, it is freshly brushed and painted regularly. Its charm is in the architecture along its narrow stone-paved lanes and cobbled streets around its squares, especially the main one, Stortorget , surrounded by old merchants' houses.

In this neighborhood, along with plenty of shops, restaurants, and cafés, you'll find the Nobel Museum , the Post Museum , the Royal Coin Cabinet , and several churches. It's also a good area to stay if you can find suitable accommodations, with options including luxury boutique hotels, guesthouses, and even affordable inns and hostels.

Vasa warship

The Vasa Museum (Vasamuseet) in Stockholm is Sweden's most popular museum, attracting around a million visitors annually. The museum caters to tourists of all nationalities, and English-language guided tours and audio guides are available.

A visit to the Vasa , which houses 10 separate exhibitions and a further four museum ships, is a day out in itself. In 1628, the pride of the Swedish Imperial fleet, the 64-gun warship Vasa , sank on its maiden voyage. The ship lay below the icy waters for more than three centuries until, in 1961, an incredibly ambitious salvage operation took place. Now, visitors from across the world come to see this fascinating time capsule.

A shop and a restaurant are located on-site for those wanting to make a full day of it.

Another Stockholm museum worth visiting is Fotografiska , an innovative gallery of changing exhibits celebrating the art of photography. It is also known for its entertainment venue and restaurant, which features sustainably grown organic produce. The museum has been so successful that there is also a newer branch of this museum in New York City .

Address: Galärvarvsvägen 14, 115 21, Stockholm

Drottningholm

Fairy-tale Drottningholm Palace (Drottningholms slott) , on the island of Lovö, is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. It lies about 11 kilometers west of Stockholm city center (45 minutes by ferry), making this an excellent day trip from Stockholm . Dating from the 17th century, the palace is now the official residence of the Swedish Royal Family.

In the picturesque terraced park are bronze sculptures from Bohemia and Denmark, brought back as trophies of war. Be sure to take in the Chinese Pavilion, which dates from the late 1700s. The 18th-century Palace Theatre (Drottningholms Slottsteater ) is still used for performances during the summer months. In the Theatre Museum, you can see period stage costumes and stage scenery.

Guided tours are available (in English), and a variety of fun programs and workshops are available for kids and adults alike.

Address: 178 93 Drottningholm

The Göta Canal

Often described as Sweden's greatest feat of engineering, the Göta Canal (Göta kanal) dates from the early 19th century and is 190 kilometers in length. It's now one of the country's premier tourist attractions and offers a unique perspective on Sweden's heartland.

In addition, by connecting with lakes Vänern and Vättern and the Trollhätte Canal , it forms part of a water link all the way from Stockholm, in the northeast, to Gothenburg, in the southwest.

Featuring 47 bridges and 58 locks the canal stretches from Sjötorp at Lake Vänern to Söderköping on the Baltic Sea. There's a choice of passenger cruise vessels or you can hire a boat and experience the canal in your own way.

Kiruna Church

Sharing the same latitude as central Greenland, Kiruna in Lapland is Sweden's northernmost town. It's also the chief town of the largest commune in the country, which borders both Norway and Finland. The midnight sun is visible here from mid-May to mid-July.

Originally a Lapp settlement, the town began to develop when the mining of iron ore started around 1900. Incredibly, due to subsidence caused by mining, the entire city is being slowly moved northwest to the foot of the Luossavaara Mountain.

The world's first-ever Ice Hotel at Jukkasjärvi is about 17 kilometers outside the city. The ICEHOTEL , with its stunning rooms and furnishings, is re-created each year in a new design, built from ice in the river Torne.

In the summer, this is a center for river rafting, stand up paddleboarding, fishing, and canoeing. Sweden's highest mountain, Kebnekaise , is 90 kilometers west of Kiruna. Abisko National Park is located 95 kilometers northwest, where the Lapland Railroad runs west to Narvik on the Norwegian coast.

Address: Marknadsvägen 63, 981 91 Jukkasjärvi

Kiruna Map - Tourist Attractions

Skansen , the world's oldest open-air museum (and one of the world's largest), is a historic village made up of houses and farmsteads from all over Sweden. Together, these impressively preserved buildings represent both rural and urban culture at various periods from 1720 to the 1960s.

Gathered here are churches, schoolhouses, manor houses, shops, mills, workers' homes, artisan's shops (including a book bindery, print shop, shoemaker, tinsmith, comb maker, and glassworks), a bakery, a funicular railroad, a Sami camp with reindeer, and a number of complete farmsteads.

These homes, farms, and workshops are inhabited by costumed interpreters who carry on the everyday work, demonstrating the crafts and skills as well as doing household and farm tasks. A zoo includes animals native to Sweden, as well as sections for exotic animals and a children's zoo.

Skansen is located in the huge urban Djurgården Park, a favorite place for locals, especially in the summer. Throughout are traditional cafés, restaurants, snack bars, and even hotels. Canoe and bicycle hire are also available if you're feeling energetic. You will also find Abba the Museum here, along with the Gröna Lund amusement park.

To get here, you can catch a ferry from Gamla Stan or Slussen or take a tram or bus from Norrmalmstorg. Alternatively, the park is a pleasant 15-minute walk from the city center. Stop by the Djurgården Visitors' Center for more information.

Address: Djurgårdsslätten 49-51, 115 21 Stockholm

Visby, Gotland

Steeped in medieval history and brimming with ruined churches, the rose-entwined, walled town of Visby, on the island of Gotland , is a huge draw for visitors from around the world.

Quaint cobblestone streets snake about the town, and when exploring, it's all too easy to lose your sense of being in the modern world. Adorned with stepped gables, many medieval trading houses remain, as well as some timber buildings from the 17th and 18th centuries.

Clearly, Visby's reputation as 'the pearl of the Baltic' and UNESCO World Heritage Site status are both well deserved. A self-guided or guided sightseeing tour of the magnificent walls, which date back some 700 years, is a must. Built into the structure are some 44 defensive towers, and the walls still bear the scars of attack in the form of two breaches.

Direct flights are available from Stockholm and several other Swedish cities, as well as excellent ferry links.

Stockholm City Hall

One of Sweden's most famous buildings, Stockholm City Hall (Stockholms stadshus) was built between 1911 and 1923, using an astonishing eight million bricks. It is considered one of the finest examples of National Romanticism, designed by the architect Ragnar Östberg. The 106-meter-tall tower is topped by three crowns.

A very informative tour recounts some of its history, as well as information about the Nobel Prize, which is presented here each year. On the tour, you'll see the Blå Hallen, the Blue Hall, where the Nobel dinner is held, and the Gyllene Salen, the Golden Hall, lined by 18 million gold mosaic tiles.

Those who want to travel even farther back in history can visit the Royal Palace ( Sveriges Kungahus ), located on Queen's Island ( Drottningholm ).
