Do Indians Need a Visa for Switzerland?

swiss visit visa requirements from india

Yes, nationals of India need to apply for a Schengen visa in order to visit Switzerland. They can do so at the visa application center in the Swiss embassy in New Delhi, or through VFS if they are nationals of Bhutan.

It’s possible to apply for a short-term stay Schengen visa that allows entry into Schengen countries for up to 90 days, but it’s necessary to apply for a national visa for stays longer than 90 days. You must apply for a visa for tourist visits, work visits, and if you want to study in Switzerland.

Types of Swiss Visa Available for Indians

Tourist visa.

A tourist visa is what you want to apply for if you’re visiting Switzerland for sightseeing, vacations, and other tourist things. You need to apply for a Schengen visa that allows entrance to Switzerland and other members of the European Union that are part of the Schengen agreement.

You can apply for a tourist visa at the Embassy of Switzerland in New Delhi, and best-case scenario you would do this a few months before your trip, but not earlier than six months prior. The fees associated with a Schengen visa for stays up to 90 days are:

  • INR 6,900 for adults (80 Euros)
  • INR 3,450 for children aged 6-12 (40 Euros)
  • Free for children younger than 6
  • Free for spouses, children, and other family members of EU/EFTA nationals
  • INR 17,200 for submitting a written objection (195 Euros)

At most, it can take up to 15 days for the embassy the process your visa application, and this is during periods when there is an exceptionally high volume of applications (popular travel seasons). The documents you will need to submit are:

  • Visa application form
  • Biometric data (fingerprint and facial photo, collected at the embassy)
  • A valid national passport
  • 2 passport-size photographs
  • Personal letter explaining reasons for travel and travel plan
  • Introduction letter
  • Proof of travel insurance
  • Proof of flight reservation
  • Proof of accommodation in Switzerland
  • Proof of financial status

Business Visa

If you’re traveling to Switzerland from India for business purposes, you will need to apply for a business Schengen visa. The process and the fees are very similar to the requirements for a tourist visa, and you just need a few extra documents:

For a business visa you will need to submit the following documents:

  • A visa application
  • A valid (national) passport
  • An introduction letter from the employer
  • Letter of invitation from Swiss business partner
  • Photocopies of valid visas from USA/UK/Canada if applicable

The visa fee for a business visa in Switzerland is 80 Euros. An important thing to note is that these are the requirements for a business visa for Switzerland, not for work permits for foreign nationals. If you need information on how to apply for a Switzerland work visa/permit, refer to this guide .

The processing time for a business visa is up to 15 days, but the period can be extended in some individual cases.

Student Visa

Indian nationals can apply for a student visa to Switzerland, and anyone who is considering doing exactly this will be glad to know that this visa is entirely free of charge. This is also a short-stay Schengen Visa that is valid for a maximum of 90 days, and here’s what documentation you need to submit for this visa:

Want To Save This For Later?

I will email this post to you, so you read it for later (or keep for reference).

  • Valid national passport
  • Two passport-sized photographs
  • Personal cover letter (including the reason for studying in Switzerland)
  • Confirmation of acceptance into a school/university etc.
  • Proof of academic degree
  • Curriculum Vitae
  • Photocopies of valid UK, USA, or Canadian visas if applicable

If you want to study in Switzerland for longer than 90 days, you will need to apply for a national visa for students. The requirements are a bit different and you actually need fewer documents, but more copies of certain documents:

  • Four passport-size photographs
  • Three visa application forms
  • A personal cover letter
  • Two copies of the Curriculum Vitae
  • Acceptance letter from university or school

The national visa is also free of charge, with the exception of Ph.D. applications which are charged the standard visa fee of 80 Euros. The processing time for a national visa for a long-term stay in Switzerland is from 8 to 12 weeks. That’s only an estimation, and the actual processing time may vary depending on many factors.

Airport Transit Visa

The good news is that Indian nationals who have a layover or a stopover in Switzerland do not need an airport transit visa. However, if you don’t have a visa you will have to wait for your connecting flight at the airport’s international transit area, so you might want to consider applying for one if you want to be able to walk around the airport at the very least. If you have a very long layover, it’s a good idea to apply for a transit visa.

You will have to contact the embassy of Switzerland in New Delhi for information on what documents are necessary for an airport transit visa because they do not offer that information online. The fees and processing time are identical to those of a short-term stay Schengen visa, so expect to pay around 80 Euros and your visa application should be processed within 15 days.

Switzerland Visa Application Fees

graphic visa

The standard fee for a Switzerland visa application is 80 Euros. The fee is 40 Euros for children between the ages of 6 and 12, and it’s possible to submit visa applications for younger children for free. If you are denied a visa and you want to submit an appeal, the fee is 195 Euros and it must be submitted in advance to the relevant Swiss authorities.

Students who apply for a student visa in Switzerland can also submit the application for free, whether they’re applying for a short-stay visa or a national visa. There are some exceptions to this rule, namely those who are applying for a student visa in order to pursue a Ph.D., and they must pay the standard 80 Euro fee.

Family members of EU/EFTA nationals are exempt from paying these fees. Also, the fees are the same whether you’re applying for a national visa or a short-term stay visa.

Where Can Indians Apply for a Switzerland Visa?

Indian nationals can apply for a short-stay Switzerland visa at the embassy of Switzerland in New Delhi. All applications must be submitted in person and you must make a Switzerland visa appointment first. It’s best to call the Swiss embassy and inquire how and where you can make the appointment.

Nationals of Bhutan can apply for a national visa at the Swiss embassy in New Delhi, but they cannot apply for short-term stay Schengen visas there. Instead, they need to go through VFS and apply for a visa to Austria.

What is the Switzerland Schengen Visa?

The Switzerland Schengen Visa is a highly sought-after business or tourist visa by Indian travelers who wish to explore Switzerland and the rest of the Schengen Area.

Schengen visas allow you to visit all 27 Schengen states, including popular destinations such as Austria, Belgium, the Czech Republic, France, Germany, Italy, Spain, and many more. With a single visa, you can travel freely within these countries without needing individual visas for each destination .

Whether you plan to embark on a leisurely holiday or conduct business meetings , having a Schengen Visa is essential to ensure a seamless entry into Switzerland and the rest of the Schengen Area.

It's important to note that while you can visit multiple Schengen states, Switzerland must be where you will spend the most time during your visit to the Schengen Zone.

Do Indian citizens need a Switzerland Schengen Visa?

Yes, as an Indian citizen, you must apply for a Schengen Visa before your trip , regardless of the purpose of your visit, whether for tourism, business, or other reasons. This also applies to children from India.

The Schengen Visa allows you to enter Switzerland and other Schengen Area countries for a specified duration, typically up to 90 days within 180 days. It grants you access to all 27 Schengen member states, including popular destinations such as France, Germany, Italy, Spain, and more, allowing you to travel freely within these countries.

To obtain a Switzerland Schengen Visa, you must go through the application process, which involves fulfilling specific requirements, completing the application form, providing necessary supporting documents, and attending an interview at the visa application center or embassy/consulate.

Please note you cannot work or live in Switzerland with this Schengen Visa. For details about work visas or residency permits, check the Swiss government website .

How long is the Switzerland Schengen Visa valid for Indian citizens?

As an Indian citizen, you can stay in Switzerland and the Schengen Area for a maximum of 90 days Per Entry within 180 days . This means that you have the flexibility to enter and travel between any Schengen country as often as you like, as long as your total stay does not exceed 90 days.

It's important to note that while we offer the application for a Multiple Entry visa, the final decision regarding the type of visa (multiple-entry, double-entry, or single-entry) lies with the Swiss authorities. The type of visa granted depends on various factors, including your supporting documents, travel history, and other relevant considerations.

Typically, a Multiple Entry visa allows you to enter the Schengen Area multiple times during a validity period ranging from 180 days to 5 years after issued . However, regardless of the visa type, the maximum stay duration per entry remains 90 days.

Can I extend the Swiss Schengen Visa?

No, it is generally not possible to extend a Schengen Visa . However, in exceptional circumstances, such as emergencies, an extension may be granted on a case-by-case basis.

If you need more time in Switzerland or the Schengen Area than your visa allows, you cannot extend the visa while in the Schengen Zone. Instead, you must return to your home country and reapply for a new Schengen Visa if you wish to continue your stay in Switzerland or any other Schengen country.

Finding the Right Submission Location

The representation will promptly provide information on the visa application procedures to be followed.

Prepare the Required Documents for a Swiss Schengen Visa

When you attend the appointment, you must submit the required documents for a Swiss Schengen visa.

To meet the short-term stay visa requirements for Switzerland, applicants must submit the following documents to the Swiss embassy or consulate:

  • Swiss Schengen visa application form .
  • Documents generally required for any Schengen visa application .

Swiss visa applicants can obtain visa insurance from either Europ Assistance or vti.travel , a European insurance comparison website, comparing insurance policies of AXA, Allianz, Europ Assistance and Mutuaide. These insurance providers are acknowledged and accepted by Swiss Embassies and Consulates worldwide. Moreover, you can cancel the insurance at no cost by submitting proof of a visa rejection.

  • If your visit is sponsored by a friend or family member in Switzerland, you may be required to submit an official declaration of guarantee signed by your host and certified by the immigration officials in Switzerland if you cannot prove you have sufficient financial means.

Each visa application undergoes a personalized review, so the required documents may differ. The Swiss authorities may also ask for additional documentation in some cases. Upon applying for the visa, you will receive the required form along with detailed instructions.

Please ensure that you have all the documents with you since you may risk getting your visa denied if something is missing from your application.

How Much Money Do I Need to Apply for a Visa to Switzerland?

To obtain a Swiss visa, you must have at least €105 per day to cover your expenses in Switzerland for the duration of your stay.

Attend Your Visa Appointment

On the day of your appointment at the Swiss embassy or visa center, you have to submit your document file and filled-in and signed application form. During the appointment, you may be required to enter a short interview and (if you haven’t paid already) pay the visa application fee.

Paying the Application Fee

If you did not pay the required fee during the online application, you have to pay an €90 visa for the visa fee. If you are applying through a visa application center, you may also need to pay an additional service fee, €10 to €40. In most cases, you must pay the fee according to the currency of the country where the application is being submitted.

Biometric Data

At the appointment, you have to submit your visa photo and fingerprint scans. If you have provided these during the last five years, you may be exempt. The purpose of collecting and storing biometric data is to verify identities and prevent document fraud.

Your biometric information will be stored in the Visa Information System (VIS) .

Visa Interview Questions

When attending your appointment, the consular or visa officer might ask you questions relating to your trip to Switzerland , such as the purpose of your trip, travel itinerary, accommodation, as well as personal information about yourself such as your work, studies, family background, etc.

Make sure you answer all questions truthfully and without hesitation. These questions are to determine the genuineness of your visit to Switzerland.

Can Someone Else Apply For a Schengen Visa on My Behalf?

Yes, someone else can apply for a Schengen visa on your behalf, but only if you’ve granted them authorization to do so and you’re not required to submit your biometric data.

Top Mistakes to Avoid During a Visa Interview

Wait for the visa to process.

Your Swiss visa will be processed in 15 working days. However, depending on the specific circumstances of your application, the processing time can be prolonged up to 30 days or more.

Track Your Application

If the Swiss embassy or consulate has outsourced visa applications to agencies such as TLS or VFS Global, they may offer visa tracking services. You will be provided with a reference number to check the relevant tracking system.

If Your Visa Is Granted

If your visa is granted, you can enter Switzerland within the dates specified in the visa sticker. Your visa will be issued for single, double, or multiple entries.

If Your Visa Is Refused

If your Swiss visa is refused, you have two options:

  • You can re-apply for a new visa. If you believe the reasons for refusal are justified, then you can fix the mistakes and apply for a new visa.
  • You can appeal the decision. If you believe your application was unjustly rejected, you can appeal the decision. Your right to appeal the decision is valid for 30 days since you receive the refusal. You will have to write a visa appeal letter in German, French, or Italian (not English!). The appeal will have to be addressed and sent to the Federal Administrative Court (P.O. Box, CH-3000 Bern 14) within 30 days of receiving the rejection.

The reason why your visa was rejected will be stated in the rejection letter.

Can I Get a Refund of the Visa Fee in Case of Visa Denial?

No, you will not. Swiss visa fees are non-refundable even if the outcome is negative.

Collect Your Passport

After a decision is made, you have to collect your passport from the Swiss embassy, or the third-party agency (TLScontact, VFS Global, etc). At the time of application, the visa officer in charge will let you know how you can get your passport back: either pick it up in-person or you can pay for a courier service to deliver it to you.

How to Enter Switzerland?

You can enter Switzerland within the validity period of your visa. You must have the following documents when you enter the border control authorities:

  • Valid passport with the Swiss visa affixed. Your passport should be valid for at least three months beyond your planned date of departure from the Schengen area and be issued within the last ten years.
  • Proof of accommodation in Switzerland. This could be a hotel booking, a rental agreement, or a letter of invitation from a host living in Switzerland.
  • Travel itinerary. Evidence of your travel plans within and after your stay in Switzerland, such as train tickets, flight bookings, etc.
  • Proof of financial means. You may need to show that you have enough money to support yourself during your stay (at least €105 per day). This can be in the form of bank statements, cash, credit cards, or letters of support from a host.
  • Travel Insurance . Proof of a travel health insurance policy that covers emergency medical expenses and repatriation for medical reasons, death, and urgent health attention, with a minimum coverage of 30,000 Euros (or equivalent) valid for the entire Schengen area.
  • Additional supporting documents. If you’re visiting for work or study, you might need an invitation letter from the employer or educational institution, or other relevant documents. Depending on your specific situation or the purpose of your visit, you might be asked for additional documents. For example, if you’re visiting family or friends, an invitation letter might be required.

What is Reciprocity?

Nonimmigrant visa applicants from certain countries*/areas of authority may be required to pay a visa issuance fee after their application is approved. These fees are based on the principle of  reciprocity:  when a foreign government imposes fees on U.S. citizens for certain types of visas, the United States will impose a reciprocal fee on citizens of that country*/area of authority for similar types of visas.

How Do I Find Out if I Have to Pay a Reciprocity Fee?

To view the Reciprocity Page for your country* of nationality, select your country*/area of authority from the list of countries on the left side menu. On the Reciprocity Page, select the Visa Classifications tab from the column on the left

Select the type of visa you have applied for, such as a B-1/B-2 (temporary visa for business or pleasure), F-1 (student visa), etc. from the drop down menu:

The reciprocity information for that country*/area of authority will display:

What does this table tell me?

Visa Classification:  The type of nonimmigrant visa you are applying for.

Fee:  The reciprocity fee, also known as the visa issuance fee, you must pay. This fee is in addition to the nonimmigrant visa application fee (MRV fee).

Number of Entries:  The number of times you may seek entry into the United States with that visa. “M” means multiple times. If there is a number, such as “One”, you may apply for entry one time with that visa.

Validity Period:  This generally means the visa is valid, or can be used, from the date it is issued until the date it expires, for travel with that visa. If your Validity Period is 60 months, your visa will be valid for 60 months from the date it is issued.

What is the Difference between the Reciprocity Fee and the Nonimmigrant Visa Application Fee?

The nonimmigrant visa application fee, also known as the MRV fee, is a nonrefundable fee paid by most applicants for U.S. visas, whether the application is approved or refused. It covers the costs associated with processing a U.S. visa application. Current nonimmigrant visa application fees can be found on our  Fees – Visa Services  webpage. (This webpage also lists the few visa categories for which application fees are not required.)

While most visa applicants are required to pay the visa application fee, the Reciprocity Fee is only charged to an approved nonimmigrant visa applicant after the visa interview.

Immigrant Visa Interviews

For Immigrant Visa interviews each U.S. Embassy or Consulate has specific instructions for their applicants. Please click here to select your designated interview location.

Civil Documents and How to Use Them

Immigrant visa applicants are required to submit certain civil documents as part of their visa application, such as birth certificates and police records. (Nonimmigrant visa applicants do not routinely need to submit civil documents as part of their visa application.) Each Reciprocity Page will provide detailed information about how to obtain these civil documents from the country* you have selected, as well as the location of the U.S. Embassy or Consulate where you can apply for your visa. For more information about civil document requirements for immigrant visa cases, see  civil documents .

To view the Civil Documents for your country* of nationality, select your country*/area of authority from the drop-down menu below. On the Reciprocity Page, click on the tabs on the left to see the categories of Civil Documents and how to obtain them.

* With respect to all references to “country” or “countries” on this page, it should be noted that the Taiwan Relations Act of 1979, Pub. L. No. 96-8, Section 4(b)(1), provides that “[w]whenever the laws of the United States refer or relate to foreign countries, nations, states, governments, or similar entities, such terms shall include and such laws shall apply with respect to Taiwan.” 22 U.S.C. § 3303(b) (1). Accordingly, all references to “country” or “countries” in the Visa Waiver Program authorizing legislation, Section 217 of the Immigration and Nationality Act, 8 U.S.C. 1187, are read to include Taiwan. This is consistent with the United States’ one-China policy, under which the United States has maintained unofficial relations with Taiwan since 1979.
