Things To Know Before Visiting Stalida in Crete

Before jumping straight into what to see and do in Stalis. We’ll answer some of the most frequently asked questions travelers ask when visiting Stalida in Crete.

Where is Stalis in Crete?

Stalis (also known as Stalida) is a small resort town located on the northeast coast of Crete. It’s situated around midway between the capital city, Heraklion, and the gorgeous coastal town of Agios Nikolaos in east Crete.

Stalis is a great place to base yourself if you plan to explore east Crete without a car. The town of Stalida is within walking distance of public transport (ie. buses), so you can easily explore nearby towns like Hersonissos, Malia, and Gouves without renting a car in Crete.

Interesting Fact: The meaning of the name ‘Stalis’ comes from the Greek verb ‘stalizo’ which means ‘a stop for rest’. The town was named ‘Stalis’ because it was a place where shepherds and farmers rested while traveling between villages.

Is Stalida in Crete Nice?

This is a question we get asked very often: ‘Is it worth visiting Stalis in Crete and is it a nice town to stay in?’.

The answer will depend on what type of vacation you’re looking for. We spent a week based in Stalida and thoroughly enjoyed exploring east Crete from Stalis.

But we understand that everyone has different needs and vacation goals. So here are some pros and cons of staying in Stalis so you can decide for yourself.

stalis beach is a nice sandy beach that is known for being good for families with kids

Stalis is a nice town to stay in if you don’t want the hassle of renting and driving a car in Crete. The town is small enough to explore on foot.

Restaurants (and authentic Greek tavernas), bars, cafes, and shops are all within walking distance. So you can easily find other things to do in Stalis if you don’t want to spend every day on the beach.

And if you want to venture beyond Stalida, you can easily take the public bus, or rent a buggy (i.e. quadbike) or scooter to explore its nearby towns. You can find out how to do this in our How To Get Around Crete guide.

Is Stalis lively?

Stalis is lively without being overly crowded and busy. The main road of Stalida is lined with cozy restaurants, traditional Greek tavernas, bustling cafes, and bakeries that will make your mouth water whilst you pick your next culinary delight.

a view of stalis town in crete during the day with restaurants, shops and cafes lining the main road

But if you’re looking to dance the night away, then you may be disappointed by the limited nightlife in Stalis. You’ll find bars and pubs in Stalida, but not nightclubs.

Stalis may also not be the best place to stay if you want to visit the  best known (i.e famous) beaches in west Crete . Like Seitan Limania beach, Balos beach, Gramvousa island, or Elafonissi (pink sand) beach.

Crete is a massive island. It’s better to stay on the west part of the island if those beaches are on your Crete travel itinerary.

collage of best beaches to visit on the west coast of crete

The other downside of Stalis is that it doesn’t have the old town charisma you’ll find in Chania or Rethymno. The upside though, is that Stalida is much quieter and less touristy in comparison.

This makes Stalis a great place to stay if you’re looking for a more budget-friendly vacation. Not only are the prices of hotels and vacation apartments much cheaper in Stalida compared to Rethymno and Chania. But the prices of eating out (i.e. restaurants, cafes), shopping and excursions are also less expensive.

Related Guide:  How much does a trip to Greece cost? Get a detailed cost breakdown for flights, hotels, car rental, eating out, and more, in our  How Expensive Is Crete  guide.

Is Stalis Beach Sandy?

Yes! Stalis is best known for its long, sandy beach. The beach stretches almost 1km long from Slalom Water Sports to  I Resort Beach Hotel & Spa .

Stalis beach may not be the most beautiful beach you’ll see in Crete. But it’s definitely one of the best beach options to visit without renting a car or hiking.

It’s a great all-around beach for couples or a group of friends. But it’s particularly well-known for being one of the best beaches for families in Crete.

what stalis beach is like on crete island

The gentle gradient of Stalis beach makes it particularly family-friendly. There are also lifeguards on duty on  the main beach  of Stalida. So there’s an extra pair of eyes to watch the kids whilst you relax on a sunbed and enjoy a cocktail or two.

And if you’re keen to explore other beaches beyond Stalis. You can easily rent a car and explore the other beautiful beaches on the east coast of Crete. Read our  Best Beaches in East Crete  to get a sneak peek!

How far is Stalis from the Airport?

Stalis is not far from the airport. The closest airport to Stalida is Heraklion Airport, which is a 20 to 30 minute (around 30km) drive to Stalis.

How To Get From Heraklion Airport To Stalis

There are a few ways to get from Heraklion Airport to Stalis. The cheapest option is taking the public bus.

Be prepared for a long airport transfer though. There are many stops along the way so the usual 20 to 30-minute drive becomes a 1.5 to 2-hour trip from the airport to Stalida on the public bus.

For the fastest option, we’d recommend taking a taxi from Heraklion Airport to Stalis instead. We booked our taxi (i.e. airport transfer) with  Crete Cab  and paid €34 for a quick and relaxing trip to our hotel in Stalis.

If you’re traveling as a bigger group (5 people or more), we’d recommend booking a  private transfer from Heraklion airport . This airport transfer can take you to any destination of your choice in Crete, not just Stalida.

What To Do In Stalida (Stalis), Crete

There are plenty of things to see and do in Stalis besides the beach! Here’s a list of what to see and do when visiting Stalida in Crete:

Eating Out At Authentic Greek Restaurants (Tavernas) in Stalis

It would be a sin to visit Greece and not try their world-famous cuisine! That’s especially true when visiting Stalis. The food here is not only mouth-watering but also SO affordable too!

collage of traditional greek food to try when visiting crete greece

You can easily enjoy an incredible meal for 2 including wine for under €30! And chances are high that you’ll probably get dessert and a shot of raki or ouzo on the house. The local restauranteurs are so friendly that they’ll make you feel like lifelong friends from day one.

Here are some of the restaurants we visited and loved in Stalis.

Stalis Restaurants

Four brothers.

We enjoyed our first meal in Crete at the  Four Brothers  Restaurant and it did not disappoint! We both had the fresh fish of the day and highly recommend it! Besides the delicious food, they offer amazing service too. The owner Kostas and his sons are the most friendly hosts we’ve ever met and made our stay in Stalis unforgettable.

They also have a great beach bar area where you can enjoy cocktails and other drinks right on the beach. It’s a great spot to enjoy sundowners before heading up for dinner.

Mastoras  is another traditional Cretan Taverna you should not miss when in Stalis! We enjoyed creamy garlic mussels as an appetizer. Then followed that with a scrumptious moussaka and a traditional beef giouvetsi (rice pilaf).

Maria’s House

If you’re craving a good roast, then head over to  Maria’s House . They roast their own meat fresh every day. We enjoyed a full roast chicken with a side of fries that was more than sufficient to share between us.

Bonus Tip: Hotels, restaurants, shopping, renting sunbeds, and beach umbrellas are generally cheaper on east vs west Crete.

Watersports in Stalida

There are plenty of options to do watersports in Stalis. Just head over to  Zervas Watersports ,  Skyride Watersports , or  Slalom Watersports  and pick your favorite activity.

Bonus Tip: Always wanted to learn how to scuba dive? Give it a go with this Beginner’s Scuba Diving Experience .

Don’t Forget Travel Insurance

Travel insurance will protect you against injury, illness, theft and even trip cancellation. It’s comprehensive cover in case anything goes wrong. We never go on a trip without it as we’ve had to use it many times in the past. Here are our favourite companies that offer the best value and service:

  • SafetyWing  (best for everyone)
  • AXA  (for US residents)
  • Outbacker  (for UK residents)
  • Allianz  (for Germany residents)

Get A Massage in Stalis

If you love Thai massages, then you must go to the  Original Thai Massage ! We loved it so much we went twice! The masseuse is from Thailand herself so this is as authentic as it gets.

Stalis Nightlife

As we mentioned earlier, Stalis is not known for its nightlife. There are bars and pubs, but you’ll have to venture to Malia or Hersonissos for nightclubs (more on that later!).

Rent A Buggy Or Scooter in Stalida, Crete

A great way to explore Stalis and its neighboring towns and villages in east Crete is by quad bike (buggy) or scooter. You can easily rent one on the island.

In Stalis, we recommend renting a buggy or scooter with Alex from the  Crete Machine Club . He is very friendly and can map out a personalized east Crete itinerary for you.

get around stalis by renting a buggy or scooter in crete

The prices to rent buggies and scooters may have changed since we were there last. But just so that you have an idea to plan your travel budget.

The prices are €50 to rent a buggy that fits 2 people for one day. If you rent for 2 days, you get 1 day free. And scooters cost €10 per day.

Rent a Car in Stalis

A buggy and scooter can only take you so far. To travel further than the neighboring towns and villages around Stalida, we’d recommend renting a car. We rented a car in Crete from  EuroMotor Creta  in Stalis.

Car rental prices will vary depending on whether you’re traveling during low or high peak season. But we spent €496 to rent a car in Crete for 12 days. That works out to renting a car for €41 per day.

You can compare prices for renting a car in Crete on  DiscoverCars.com or RentalCars.com and look for a better deal. But we went with EuroMotor Creta because they didn’t require us to book with a credit card.

The price also included full car insurance as well as a one-way fee. This worked out better for us since we wanted to return the car at Chania Airport instead of Stalis.

Day Trip From Stalis to Malia

Take a day trip from Stalis and explore the town of Malia. It’s another popular coastal town to visit on the northeast coast of Crete.

The beach at Malia may not be as long and extensive as Stalis. But Malia has the incredible nightlife scene that you won’t find in Stalida.

a popular nightclub in malia near stalis crete

Malia is so famous for its nightlife, that it has an entire strip dedicated to it – the Malia party strip. It’s basically like a mini Las Vegas for trendy bars and epic nightclubs.

During the day, we’d recommend exploring the beautiful old town of Malia. And if you love archaeological sites, we’d recommend renting a scooter or buggy and visiting the  Minoan town ruins  just 3km outside of Malia.

an old restaurant (san giorgio restaurants) building in old town malia near stalis in crete greece

Bonus Tip: Need a caffeine fix? Enjoy a deliciously brewed cup of coffee at  Coffee Island . And when you’re ready to sit down for lunch or dinner, we’d recommend going to  Stone House . They only cook what they can buy fresh and you can taste the difference in every bite!

How To Get From Stalis (Stalida) To Malia in Crete

Malia is located around 3km east of Stalida. So you can easily walk from Stalis to Malia if you wish.

We did just that. Explored the town of Malia for the day and then took the public bus back from Malia to Stalida when we got tired.

You can find  the local bus stop  on El Venizelou road near Coffee Island and wait for the turquoise bus. They come every 30 minutes and will cost €1.60 per person to go from Malia to Stalis.

a turquiose minoan line bus that is the main form of public transportation on crete island greece

Bonus Tip: There’s a cashier on the bus. Just make sure you have cash to pay because they don’t take card.

They are both great coastal towns to stay in, in north east Crete. But we’d recommend staying in Stalida if you plan to spend most of your time on the beach. There are more beachfront hotels to choose from in Stalis vs Malia. And it’s also quieter and more family-friendly.

But if you’re looking for a more lively, bustling town with plenty of things to do at night, then we’d recommend Malia.

Day Trip From Stalis to Hersonissos

Another great town to explore near Stalis is Hersonissos. It’s a much larger seaside town compared to Stalis and Malia with plenty of things to see and do.

Families with kids will love visiting the  CretAquarium ,  Acqua Plus Water Park , or  Dinosauria Park .

For outdoor lovers, don’t miss these activities:

  • Catamaran cruise from Hersonissos to Dia Island (6.5 hours)
  • Sunset cruise from Hersonissos to Agios Georgios Bay (3.5 hours)
  • Guided quad bike safari tour to explore the mountains of Crete (5 hours)

And if you’re traveling as a couple or a group of friends, there are plenty of restaurants, bars, and nightclubs in Hersonissos to explore.

a view of hersonissos old town village at night with people eating at restaurants

For dinner, we’d recommend heading over to Hersonissos Village and picking a restaurant there. We went to  Myrtios Traditional Taverna  and enjoyed every scrumptious bite!

How To Get From Stalis (Stalida) To Hersonissos in Crete

The best way to get from Stalis to Hersonissos in Crete is to either rent a scooter or buggy to drive there or take the public bus.

Just head over to  bus stop 28  or  29  in Stalis to take the public transport to Hersonissos.

Wrapping Things Up

Stalis may not be as well-known as Chania or Rethymno, but it’s a great town to stay in Crete for many reasons.

It’s small enough to explore on foot so you don’t need to rent a car to get around. The town has lots of restaurants, bars, cafes, and shops so there’s plenty to do besides spending it on the beach.

We also loved the fact that Stalida is lively without being overly crowded and busy. Perfect for families with kids or travelers who prefer to avoid the crowds.

And if you do want to wander and explore, you can easily do so taking the public bus to nearby towns like Malia or Hersonissos.

The only downsides are that Stalis doesn’t have the old town charm that Chania and Rethymno have and that it’s quite a drive to visit the most famous beaches on the island.

But if you don’t mind skipping these popular and often crowded attractions, you’ll save a lot of money staying here. Not only are the prices of hotels and vacation apartments much cheaper in Stalida compared to the towns in the west. But the prices of eating out (i.e. restaurants, cafes), shopping and excursions are also less expensive.

Biden honors US war dead with a cemetery visit ending a French trip that served as a rebuke to Trump

President Biden has closed out his trip to France by paying his respects at an American military cemetery that Donald Trump skipped visiting when he was president. Biden’s stop Sunday at the Aisne-Marne American Cemetery outside Paris was a solemn end to five days in which Trump was an unspoken yet unavoidable presence.

BELLEAU, France (AP) — President Joe Biden closed out his trip to France by paying his respects at an American military cemetery that Donald Trump notably skipped when he was president, hoping his final stop Sunday helped draw the stakes of the November election in stark relief.

Before returning to the United States, Biden honored America’s war dead at the Aisne-Marne American Cemetery about an hour outside Paris. He placed a wreath at the cemetery chapel before an expanse of white headstones marking the final resting place of more than 2,200 U.S. soldiers who fought in World War I.

It was a solemn end to five days in which Trump was an unspoken yet unavoidable presence. On the surface, the trip marked the 80th anniversary of D-Day and celebrated the alliance between the United States and France. But during an election year when Trump has called into question fundamental understandings about America’s global role, Biden has embraced his Republican predecessor — and would-be successor — as a latent foil.

Every ode to the transatlantic partnership was a reminder that Trump could upend those relationships. Each reference to democracy stood a counterpoint to his rival’s efforts to overturn a presidential election. The myriad exhortations to help Ukraine defend itself against Russia created a contrast with Trump’s skepticism about providing U.S. assistance.

Biden’s paeans to the struggle between democracy and autocracy drew plaudits in Europe, where the prospect of a return to Trump’s turbulent reign has sparked no shortage of anxiety. But it remains to be seen how the message will resonate with American voters, as Biden’s campaign struggles to connect the dire warnings the Democratic president so often delivers about his rival with people’s daily concerns.

The visit to the cemetery served as a moment to underscore the contrast once more.

“It’s the same story,” Biden said. “America showed up. America showed up to stop the Germans. America showed up to make sure that they did not prevail. And America shows up when we’re needed just like our allies show for us.”

During a 2018 trip to France, Trump skipped plans to go to the cemetery, a decision that the White House blamed on weather at the time. However, subsequent reports said that Trump told aides he didn’t want to go because he viewed the dead soldiers as “suckers” and “losers.” Trump has denied the comments, although they were later corroborated by his chief of staff at the time, John Kelly.

Trump’s purported insults have become a regular feature of Biden’s campaign speeches, including during an April rally in Scranton, Pennsylvania.

“These soldiers were heroes, just as every American who has served this nation,” Biden said. “Believing otherwise, that alone is disqualifying for someone to seek this office.”

Biden ignored a direct question about Trump at the cemetery but said it was important to visit the hallowed ground. “The idea that I would come to Normandy and not make the short trip here to pay tribute,” he added, his voice trailing off as if to express disbelief.

Trump, at a campaign rally in Las Vegas, said Sunday after Biden had left France that the president’s performance overseas was “terrible” and embarrassing, though Trump did not cite anything in particular. “This is not a representative for what used to be the greatest country,” he told his supporters, adding that under Biden “we are a nation in major decline and we’re going to stop it immediately.”

Maura Sullivan, a former Marine officer who served on the American Battle Monuments Commission under President Barack Obama, said Biden’s visit would “set the example, and do what a president should do.” Now an official with the New Hampshire Democratic Party, Sullivan said that “voters can draw their own conclusions” from that.

Biden’s trip was full of emotional moments, and the president grew heavy-eyed after meeting with World War II veterans. A 21-gun salute cast eerie smoke over 9,388 white marble headstones at the Normandy American Cemetery.

“This has been the most remarkable trip that I’ve ever made,” Biden said on Saturday night, his last in Paris before returning to the U.S.

At Aisne-Marne, Biden said the trip “surprised me how much it awakened my sense of why it’s so valuable to have these alliances. Why it’s so critical. That’s the way you stop wars, not start wars.”

His remarks over the last few days were also freighted with political overtones.

On Thursday at Normandy anniversary ceremonies, Biden said D-Day served a reminder that alliances make the United States stronger, calling it “a lesson that I pray we Americans never forget.” He also highlighted how the war effort drew on immigrants, women and people of color who were too often overlooked by history.

Then on Friday, he went to Pointe du Hoc, a spot on the coast where Army Rangers scaled cliffs to overcome Nazi defenses on D-Day that was also the site in 1984 of one of President Ronald Reagan’s most memorable speeches about the struggles between the West and the Soviet Union during the Cold War.

By following in an iconic Republican’s footsteps, Biden honed his appeal to traditional conservatives who are often frustrated by Trump’s isolationist vision. Biden issued a call for Americans to protect democracy like the Rangers who scaled the cliffs, a message that synced with campaign rhetoric that paints his election opponent as an existential threat to U.S. values.

While Biden was in France, his campaign announced that it had hired the onetime chief of staff to former Republican Rep. Adam Kinzinger to lead outreach to GOP voters. Kinzinger clashed with Trump’s foreign policy and efforts to overturn the last presidential election.

At Pointe du Hoc, Biden said the Army Rangers “fought to vanquish a hateful ideology in the ’30s and ’40s. Does anyone doubt they wouldn’t move heaven and earth to vanquish hateful ideologies of today?”

Trump has argued that the U.S. needs to devote more attention to its own problems and less to foreign alliances and entanglements. He has also routinely played down the importance of American partnerships, suggesting the U.S. could abandon its treaty commitments to defend European allies if they don’t pay enough for their own defenses.

Douglas Brinkley, a presidential historian who wrote a book about Pointe du Hoc and Reagan’s speech, said Biden “had big shoes to step into” by choosing the same location.

Biden’s speech “didn’t equal Reagan’s in grandeur, nor could it,” Brinkley said. Still, he said Biden “said the right words about why democracy matters.”

Paul Begala, a veteran Democratic strategist, said it could help Biden politically “to stand where Reagan stood.”

He noted that Biden is struggling with younger voters but appears to be gaining strength among older ones who may be more receptive to reminders of Reagan’s speech four decades ago.

“He needs a lot of Reagan Republicans to offset his challenges with younger voters,” he said.

Biden’s trip was also punctuated by the pomp of a state visit in Paris.

French President Emmanuel Macron arranged a ceremony at the Arc du Triomphe, where four fighter jets flew overhead, and hosted a banquet at the Elysee presidential palace.

“United we stand, divided we fall,” Macron said in toasting Biden. “Allied we are, and allied we will stay.”

Overall, Biden’s visit had a slower pace than other foreign trips. The 81-year-old president had no public events on his first day in Paris after arriving on an overnight flight, and didn’t hold a press conference with reporters, as is customary. John Kirby, a national security spokesman, said that was necessary to prepare “in advance of the weighty engagements” during subsequent days.

“There’s a lot on the calendar,” he said.

Still, it was a contrast to Macron’s tendency to offer prestigious guests an intense schedule with a mix of official meetings, business talks, cultural events and private dinners at fancy restaurants.

When the 46-year-old French leader hosted Chinese President Xi Jinping last month, the two-day agenda was crammed with activities including a trip to the Pyrenees Mountains near the border with Spain where Macron spent time as a child.

Associated Press writer Jonathan J. Cooper in Las Vegas and Sylvie Corbet contributed to this report.

Donald Trump turns 78 in relative quiet, a day after a noisy trip to Washington, D.C.

stalis day trips

WASHINGTON - Former President Donald Trump marked his 78th birthday on Friday in relative quiet - unlike the volatility of the rest of his birthday week.

"It's just a beautiful night - I hate to conclude," Trump told supporters during an hour-long speech at a birthday event that capped an otherwise uneventful day.

The presumptive 2024 Republican presidential nominee stayed relatively low-key a day after he insulted the city of Milwaukee - which is hosting next month's Republican convention - and further teased his vice presidential selection during his first visit to Capitol Hill for the first time since the pro-Trump insurrection of Jan. 6, 2021 .

"There's tremendous unity in the Republican Party," Trump told reporters after seperate meetings with House and Senate Republicans.

Trump is also busy preparing for his scheduled July 11 sentencing after being found guilty in the New York hush money trial - one of many negative items listed by supporters of President Joe Biden as they wished Trump a different kind of "Happy Birthday."

Prep for the polls: See who is running for president and compare where they stand on key issues in our Voter Guide

After his Washington visit, "Trump came away looking even more unhinged and out of touch with the voters he’ll need to reach 270 electoral votes," said a memo from Michael Tyler, communications director for the Biden campaign.

A birthday celebration

Trump headlined his own birthday event Friday night with an appearance at "Club 47," a local group of supporters who are paying thousands of dollars for a dinner in West Palm Beach, Fla., near Trump's Mar-a-Lago private club and personal residence.

The former president is expected to hit the campaign trail again Saturday with appearances in Detroit, including a "roundtable discussion" at a Detroit church and a speech before the conservative group Turning Point Action.

Michigan supporters plan to maintain birthday celebrations with a boat parade on Lake St. Clair .

Biden's birthday greetings to Trump

President Joe Biden's campaign marked the ocassion by sending Trump a birthday greeting listing 78 less-than-stellar "accomplishments."

The Biden list included bankruptcies, business failures, allegations of racism, allegations of sexual misconduct, threats to political opponents, suggestions of violence, two impeachments, and four sets of criminal indictments.

“Happy birthday, Donald," said a statement from Biden campaign spokesperson James Singer. "You’re a crook, a failure, a fraud, and a threat to our democracy, economy, rights, and future."

Still, Trump may have had a better birthday than first lady Jill Biden, who marked her 73rd birthday on June 3 in court watching the trial of stepson Hunter Biden .

Milwaukee, a 'horrible city'?

Democrats also continued to hammer Trump over his comments about Milwaukee, the biggest city in a battleground state - Wisconsin - that could decide the Biden-Trump race.

In his meeting with House Republicans, Trump reportedly said: "Milwaukee, where we are having our convention, is a horrible city," according to Punchbowl News .

In the Fox News interview, Trump said he was referring to the city's crime rate, and added that "I love Milwaukee."

Democrats plastered Trump's face and the quote on 10 billboards spread around the city. And Milwaukee Mayor Cavalier Johnson said he found it "bizarre" that Trump would insult the biggest city in a pivotal state. He added: "All of us lived through his presidency, so right back at ya, buddy."

Biden, Trump, and the G-7

Trump spent part of Friday afternoon posting items on Truth Social, including positive poll numbers and attacks on Biden. He also advertised a rally Tuesday in Racine, Wisc., not far from Milwaukee.

The Republican's presidential campaign responded to the latest Milwaukee attacks by citing negative media coverage of Biden's attendance at the G-7 summit in Italy .

Trump's team also is trying to make Biden's age of 81 an issue in the campaign, saying theoldest president in U.S. history has exhibited signs of "cognitive decline" while "wandering around" during a photo opportunity.

The Biden campaign said its opponents used a video with "an artificially narrow frame" to distort the president's movements as he went over to congratulate a skydiver who participated in a G-7 event.

Happy birthday from Congress

Trump's comments about Milwaukee and other matters came during a pair of closed-door meetings with lawmakers, the first with House Republicans and the second with Senate Republicans.

Both meetings marked Trump's life milestone; House Republicans serenaded the former president with a rendition of "Happy Birthday," while Senate Republicans presented him with a giant cake.

In his Fox interview following the meetings, Trump dropped another hint about his imminent vice presidential selection: He said he probably been in the same room with his running mate during his session with Senate Republicans.

The Republican senators near the top of his list include Tim Scott of South Carolina, J.D. Vance of Ohio, Tom Cotton of Arkansas, and Marco Rubio of Florida.

When asked "was your pick for V.P. in that room with you?" Trump said: "Probably, yes."

Trump repeated that "we will probably announce it during the convention," which is scheduled for July 15-18 in Milwaukee.

It's hard to tell how seriously to take it all; there are some non-senators on Trump's list, including North Dakota Gov. Doug Burgum. Trump also told Fox that "I have sort of a pretty good idea" about who the selection will be.

"Look, we have some really talented people," Trump said. "I have a pretty good idea."

'Pretend the day doesn't exist'

Friday's relative peace by Trump's standards capped a week-long series of birthday tributes. During a rally Sunday in Las Vegas, the crowd sang "Happy Birthday" to the ex-president.

“There’s a certain point at which you don’t want to hear ‘Happy Birthday,’” Trump told supporters. “You just want to pretend the day doesn’t exist.”

So you’ve caught the bourbon itch, and you’re eager to travel the Kentucky Bourbon Trail .

Cool — but so have hundreds of thousands of other people, too.

The Kentucky Distillers Association reported 2.55 million visits to Kentucky’s distilleries in 2023, and visitors came from 48 states, 20 countries, and six continents. Kentucky bourbon’s popularity has boomed over the past decade, and craft distilling and the tourism industry has blossomed alongside it. The demand means walk-in tours and tastings aren’t always available and reservations for lodging, experiences, and dining are often encouraged.

If you plan to travel the Kentucky Bourbon Trail , come prepared.

Ahead of the summer travel season, The Courier Journal reached out to tourism officials in Louisville, Bardstown and Frankfort to distill down just how far in advance you should hammer down your plans.

Ready to hit the trail? Here's what to know about planning a Kentucky bourbon adventure.

Is there a time of year when Kentucky Bourbon Trail is less busy?

The end of winter, generally, tends to be the least busy time to visit Kentucky, but in recent years, many distilleries have seen an uptick around the winter holiday season and even in January, February and early March.

When should you book a tour at a Kentucky bourbon distillery?

Tourism officials recommend booking tours at least a month in advance, but this largely depends on the distillery you want to go to. Distilleries individually release calendars for booking dates, some distilleries, like the ever-popular Buffalo Trace Distillery (which is not on the official Kentucky Bourbon Trail), opens bookings two months in advance and offer a waitlist. Other distilleries have calendars that extend out three months or more in advance.

Officials suggest researching the distilleries you know you want to visit first, figuring out when those calendars will be released, and booking those must-see experiences as soon as possible. Set calendar reminders in your phone, so that you can circle back when the time comes.

When should I book a hotel or Airbnb for a trip along the Kentucky Bourbon Trail?

If you're planning a trip for a weekend in April, early May, September, or October book ahead as much as possible. In most cases, you can find accommodations in Frankfort with about two weeks' advanced notice. Bardstown officials recommended booking at least 1-2 months in advance. For major events, such as Bardstown's Kentucky Bourbon Festival in September, some people secure rooms a full year ahead of time.

When should I make a reservation at a Kentucky bourbon distillery restaurant?

In general, officials recommend booking a dining reservation at least two weeks ahead of time. Distillery restaurants, typically, operate fewer hours than traditional restaurants, so their reservations will be scarcer. If you’ve already secured a bourbon experience at a distillery, try to book a reservation that coincides with it.

When should I book a tour company to help me travel the Kentucky Bourbon Trail?

Again, officials recommend locking this down as soon as possible. Many tour companies open up their calendars for booking as much as a year in advance.

How many Kentucky bourbon distilleries can you visit in a single day?

Tours typically range from 30 to 90 minutes. As you're planning your calendar, make sure you’re watching how closely you stack them and what your travel time between distilleries may be. Many distilleries have cocktail bars and gift shops, so even if you have some lag time in between, you will almost certainly have somewhere interesting to linger.

The closer the distilleries are to each other, the more you can visit in a day. Louisville, for example, has several distilleries within walking distance of each other, and in Lexington, you can hit three distilleries back-to-back at the Distillery District . Travelers will need a car or tour bus to get around distilleries in Bardstown or Frankfort.

A leisurely traveler can hit about three in a single day, whereas a more thorough planner might go to five.

What are the hidden gems along the Kentucky Bourbon Trail?

Smaller craft distilleries tend to be easier to book a tour with than internationally known brands. Distilleries on the Kentucky Bourbon Trail Craft Tour may have more availability than the traditional Kentucky Bourbon Trail.

For example, Whiskey Thief Distilling Company in Frankfort still offers walk-in tours, but they recommend you call ahead.

Many newer or smaller distilleries are not on the official Kentucky Bourbon Trail such as J. Mattingly 1845 Distillery in Frankfort as well as Louisville's Buzzards Roost and NuLu Whiskey Company .

Bardstown Bourbon Company and Castle & Key also operate tasting rooms in downtown Louisville.
