Pros and Cons of Slide out

Having a slide out in your RV makes it completely different game. Here are the pros of having a slide in your camper.

1. Provides extra space

A slide out in a camper is great innovation that provides you extra space that can be collapsed while travelling. You can have long lengthy RV but having a wide RV is not possible. A bigger width makes a great home like living space using a slide.

2. More sleeping capacity

Enjoy more sleeping capacity when you have that slide out on your camper. Most slide have dinette that are convertible into beds. Some also include bunk bed inside the slide out.

Though it may seem that having a slide out is a must and very advantageous it does have some disadvantage as well. Before you close your eyes and make a purchase read below points about cons of slide out in campers.

1. Overall weight increases

A slide out does give you that extra space but it dramatically increases the weight of the RV. Though it may seem like a compact package, the weight is equivalent to a longer RV. Hauling a heavy travel trailer as you know is difficult and puts extra stress on you as a driver and on the car or truck as well.

2. Reduces mileage of the car

Towing a heavier travel trailer means less miles per gallon for your car or truck. This can add up when you travel a lot. The weight added by slide out can really make the difference especially if you want to travel on budget this will not make sense.

3. Mechanical Issues

Any moving parts in your RV will face issue over time. Stuck slide is a common issue if it is not maintained properly. Though such problems will be rare, but having such a issue will cost you much on repairs.

4. Leaks in and around slides

If you ask a RVers who faced leaks n the RV , where the leaks were. Many would answer it was near their slide. A moving slide with gaps has greater tendency of leaks specially if it is not maintained properly.

Now you know the top 10 best small travel trailers with slide-outs!

They rank high because of their unique towability, quality, construction, floor plan layouts, space, and other bonus features. All these units are tested and trusted for comfort, functionality, versatility, flexibility, and convenience.

Do not wait any longer! Buy one today and enjoy a game-changing camping experience!

  • Sleeps 2 to 3 people

The Lance 1475 is a compact travel trailer with a small slide-out section that houses a small seating area.

This departs from many of the competitors who install a large, static dinette section.

This serves to give you more floor space to move around in what might otherwise be a tightly spaced travel trailer.

The slide-out section also opens up enough floor space to accommodate a true dry bath, where as a lot of similar small travel trailers this size only have a wet bath.

It’s supported by 26 gallon fresh water and a pair of 26 gallon wastewater tanks.

This gives you just enough water capacity to camp off the grid for a day or two, without driving the weight up.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does a slide-out section add a lot of weight to a travel trailer.

The additional material and the power-retractable components of a slide-out section do technically increase the dry weight of a travel trailer.

Though this was more of an issue in the past, where a slide-out section usually made a travel trailer so heavy that you needed a full-size pickup truck to tow it confidently.

Recent improvements in RV materials and manufacturing technology have helped reduce the overall weight of a slide-out section to help keep many models within range of what a robust mid-size or full-size SUV can tow.

Are Slide-Out Sections Difficult To Maintain On A Travel Trailer?

By their nature, power-retractable slide-out sections on a small travel trailer do need more maintenance than a camper that doesn’t have them.

All the moving parts need periodic lubrication, and the seals or gaskets can start to develop leaks over the years if the travel trailer isn’t properly stored during the winter.

There are a lot of great small travel trailers with slide-out sections on the market today.

Modern materials and engineering have even helped keep some light enough to be towed by a robust mid-size SUV with a towing package installed.

The one that’s best for you might depend on the size of your family and how you like to camp.

If it’s just you and your significant other or you have an only child, then the Dutchmen – Coleman Rubicon 1608RB might be the best small travel trailer with a slide-out to meet your needs.

The dinette section can be used as a daybed for a toddler and will still be large enough to grow with your child over the years.

If you have a larger family and you need to sleep multiple children or teenagers at the same time then the Forest River – Rockwood Mini Lite 2109S might be the best small travel trailer with a slide-out for your family.

The kids will love the bunk beds, not to mention the fact that everyone gets to have their own sleeping and storage space.

8 Great Small Travel Trailers With Slide Outs

A slide-out is a great feature for any travel trailer, but it comes in especially handy when the model is a small one to begin with. If you’re looking for a camper that’s relatively easy to tow while providing a generous amount of living space, take a look at this list of great small travel trailers with slide out.

2021 Forest River R-Pod 190

What Are Slide Outs?

Invented in the 1990s, slide outs became popular when RV manufacturers realized that there was a way to add more living space to a travel trailer without increasing its length. Essentially, a slide out is an additional room in the RV, albeit one that doesn’t have a door.

There are two different types of slide out available: Hydraulic and electric. The hydraulic version is more complex and uses a supplementary pump or motor to extend the slide out, while electric ones run on the RV’s own power system. Whichever version your trailer has, it should extend and retract easily, with no sticking.

The average slide out will extend 2-3 feet along the outside of your travel trailer, but some are larger. Obviously, the larger the slide out is, the more extra space you’ll be getting when it’s fully extended.

Important Considerations

Before investing in a travel trailer with a slide out, remember that your campsite or parking spot will have to be large enough to accommodate the extra bulk. This isn’t a deal breaker for most people, but it’s still something to be aware of, particularly if you’re looking for a small camper to begin with.

While both hydraulic and electric systems are fairly easy to operate, they do represent yet another aspect of the trailer that will require regular maintenance. Some buyers decide that the hassle of a slide out isn’t worth the additional space.

Additionally, you’ll need to make sure that you’re not taking advantage of the slide out to overload the trailer. Manufacturers don’t typically provide information about how much weight the slide out can hold, so take care to ensure that you remain within the rig’s ovarall weight capacity.

Best Small Travel Trailers With Slide Out: Product Review Guide

The sweet little R-Pod 190 is one of the most compact units available, with a dry weight of 2979 pounds. Because it measures just over 20 feet in length, it’s remarkably easy to tow, and finding a campsite should be a cinch.

The U-shaped dinette is located in the rear and forms the focal point of the living space, with the entertainment center on the facing wall. A sleeping area with a queen-sized bed and wardrobe takes up residence on the other end. The kitchen area is small yet functional, with a sink, refrigerator, and two-burner range. If you enjoy cooking alfresco, there’s an outdoor kitchen option as well. The bathroom layout separates the stall shower and the toilet, so two people can use the facilities at once.

Even lighter than the R-Pod 190 is the Lance 1575, with a dry weight of 2775 pounds. This unit also has a more minimalist feel, with an interior that’s functional rather than frilly. If you’re a former tent enthusiast who just wants a place to sleep off the ground, this could be the model for you.

A queen-sized bed dominates the sleeping area, which is located just to the right of the entrance. The slide out accommodates a U-shaped dinette, which provides sleeping space for two more people if necessary. In our opinion, the convertible dinette is better suited for small children than adults.

The kitchen includes a refrigerator and stove with three-burner range. There is a shower available in the tiny bathroom, separated from the commode by a simple curtain. This unit doesn’t provide a glamping experience, but it’s a great fit for adventurous couples or small families.

The ingenious design of the Sportsmen Classic 181BH includes a set of rear bunk beds that bumps the maximum sleep count up to 6. The dinette, which is located in the single slide out, can be converted into a bed as well.

Pass-through storage is located above the queen-sized bed, which makes up the main sleeping area. Across from the dinette is the kitchen, with a sink, refrigerator, microwave, and two-burner range. The bathroom is adjacent to the bunk area and includes a stall shower and toilet.

In addition to the slide out, the Sportsmen Classic 181BH is equipped with a 9-foot awning to help maximize the living space. We wouldn’t recommend this model for couples, as the bathroom is so far away from the master bedroom, but it’s ideal for families with older children.

Take a look at the Hummingbird 17RK if roomy kitchen facilities rank high on your hit parade. The rear-facing kitchen, which is one of the most attractive we’ve seen in small travel trailers , is distinguished by an exceptional amount of storage and counter space. In addition to the sink, two-burner range, refrigerator, and microwave, the space includes a generously-sized pantry for dry goods. Because the U-shaped dinette is located in the slide out, you’ll have more space to move around as well.

Rounding out the facilities are a bathroom with a stall shower and toilet, as well as a sleeping area with a wardrobe and television set. We don’t love the fact that you can only watch TV from the bed, but depending on how often you like to tune in, this might not be an issue.

The Palomini 182SK is surprisingly roomy as small travel trailers go, offering rear entry that allows for easy access to the bathroom. While we appreciate this thoughtful touch, it’s just one of the reasons to consider this unit.

The slide out houses the kitchen facilities, which consist of a refrigerator, sink, two-burner range, and overhead storage. A cozy dinette, which can be converted to a second sleeping area, features an overhead storage unit as well. The master bedroom includes two wardrobes in addition to a queen-sized bed. As for the rear-facing bathroom, it’s outfitted with a toilet, sink, linen cabinet, and convenient corner-stall shower.

Although the unit offers a decent amount of elbow room, we still think it’s better suited to couples than families. The dinette is fine when it’s being used as a table, but when it’s converted to a bed, it’s too small to be comfortable for anyone but a very young child.

Like the Palomini 182SK, the Geo Pro G19FBS offers a rear bathroom that’s located directly across from the entrance. This configuration improves the overall flow of the living space, and the convenience is hard to beat. The fridge and microwave are positioned just inside the door as well, so you can grab a cold one or a quick snack before dashing back outside to join the rest of the group. There’s also an outdoor gas griddle to allow for easy outdoor dining.

Inside, you’ll find a convertible sofa, entertainment center, and sleeping area with queen-sized bed. The interior kitchen includes a sink and a stove with a two-burner range, along with the microwave and refrigerator. Still, the Geo Pro 19FBS is geared toward all the fun you can have outside the trailer. We’re especially fond of the outdoor speaker, which makes it possible to jam out to tunes while you’re chilling in the great outdoors.

Duck beneath the generous 11-foot awning and through the rear entry of the Rockwood Mini Lite 1909S, a gorgeous diminutive offering from Forest River. Once through the door, you’ll have quick access to the bathroom facilities, which include a corner stall shower in addition to the toilet and sink. You can also install an entertainment center just inside the door, making it easy to watch the news from anywhere inside the trailer.

As slides go, this one is especially well-equipped, holding overhead storage as well as a convertible sofa and table. The kitchen includes a refrigerator, sink, and three-burner range, so you can prepare all your favorite meals in style. While the master bedroom is slightly cramped, it does make room for a small nightstand and an overhead storage unit.

Unlike the other models listed here, which use the slides to hold convertible dining or seating areas, this one features a rear slide out with a king-sized bed. While it’s unusual to have the master bedroom located in the slide out, it’s a cool feature that opens up the rest of the living space.

To the right of the main entrance are a set of bunk beds, large enough for teenagers or young adults to sleep in comfort. The bathroom is located adjacent to this sleeping area and includes a full tub, toilet, sink, and linen closet. The kitchen is outfitted with a refrigerator, pantry, three-burner range, and large sink. There’s also a second outdoor kitchen with an additional sink and two-burner range.

Relax on the sofa or convertible dinette and enjoy the wall-mounted LCD television, which can also be viewed from the slide-out master bedroom. The Outback 210URS offers plenty of exterior storage, including room for bicycles beneath the bunk area.

The Bottom Line

When you buy a travel trailer with a slide out, you’ll have the opportunity to improve your living conditions during your travel adventures. This is especially important if space constraints require you to buy a camper that measures under 24 feet in length. While these units require a bit of extra work, we think they’re well worth the effort.

Best of luck, and happy camping!

Best Small Travel Trailers with Slide Outs

small travel trailers with 2 slides

Small travel trailers with slide outs are a wonderful option for RV owners that want something lightweight and compact while also providing the convenience of additional space. Below is our list of some of the smallest travel trailers with slide outs.

Best Small Travel Trailers With Slide Outs

1. 2019 Winnebago Minnie Drop 170K 2. 2018 Winnebago Minnie 2401RG 3. 2020 Rockwood Mini Lite 2509S 4. 2019 StarCraft Satellite 17RB 5. 2019 Lance 1575 6. Keystone 22RBPR Bullet Premier

2019 Winnebago Minnie Drop 170K

A consistent winner

In an industry defined by its lack of quality control, Winnebago stands out for its excellence. Their Trailers and RVs are some of the highest-rated campers on the market. So what makes the 170k stand out above the rest? It’s the attention to the details that the average customer might miss at a glance. They care more about the life of the product than the quick sale. The 170K is proof of this in lots of little ways, and a few big ones. Winnebago’s standards are just a step higher than the rest, and that shows in the lifespan of their products.

T60 Fiberglass

Let’s start with the Fiberglass. Many times these fiberglass units, though good quality, are created with vulnerabilities. The sections of fiberglass are pieced together. The seems in these pieces, after some wear, become openings for moisture. The sides of Winnebago RVs and trailers use the T60 Fiberglass/Gel Coat. These sections of the Fiberglass sidewall cover the entire sides of the trailer which leaves few potential entry points for the moisture to penetrate.

In case you don’t know, this is the type of fiberglass construction that is typically used on the high-end $70k to $90k units. You get this by default on this $27,000 unit.

Plywood Instead of Particle Board

Winnebago utilizes plywood in their construction which goes a long way in preventing water damage. If you have spent any time with RVs, you will know that this is the number one killer of RVs and trailers.

First, particle boards are more prone to being stripped by the screws. This weakens the hold that binds trailers together which adds to the squeaks and vulnerability to moisture. Plywood is a standard for Winnebago. It is less prone to this stripping. It will still happen eventually. Bouncing down the road will do that. The benefit is that plywood holds together, so you will have more time before any repairs are needed.

Second, particle boards soak up moisture easily. Both of them can soak in water. However, plywood is less susceptible to this type of damage. Particleboard is more likely to swell and expand with water, and that warping can cause permanent damage to the trailer. Having a bit more protection can go a long way on that rainy day.

For such a small unit, there is a decent amount of storage space. Nothing massive, but space is utilized very well, and it should easily hold the necessities.

Outdoor Kitchen

This is nice for an outdoor kitchen in a small unit. The pop-out kitchen contains a two-burner stove and sink and a TV wall mount with appropriate hookups: antenna and wall sockets. There is a mini-fridge for your drinks and a quick-connect barbecue connector.

Large U-shaped Dinette

While the 170k only sleeps 4 people, the dinette sits 6 adults. You can have some friends over without retreating to the outdoors. That’s a nice feature for all of you more sociable characters.

2018 Winnebago Minnie 2401RG

At nearly 28′, I struggled to decide if this trailer is too big to belong on the list. However, the Winnebago Minnies offer too much to pass on this one. It is small enough to be manageable and inexpensive enough to stay in many beginner budgets.

Indoor Kitchen

Being 28 feet long, Winnebago was able to fit a bit more inside than the previous 17 feet long unit. The previous trailer had an outdoor kitchen; this one is large enough to have one indoors. It contains a vertically stacked microwave, 3-range stovetop, and oven. The countertop stop is spacious that can be expanded further with the use of cutting board quality sink covers. The deep stainless steel sinks and high-rise faucet are nice touches that should not be forgotten. There is also a fridge/freezer combo that can seamlessly switch between both gas and electric.

Plenty of Storage

Thanks to a clever utilization of space, there is plenty of interior storage space. Near the door, a large compartment can hold whatever might normally clutter up a home’s entrance: shoes, bags, etc. A massive closet is set in the center of the trailer, and it is accessible to everyone. There is a smaller closet located inside the master bedroom. You will also find storage underneath and behind the jackknife couch . Finally, cabinets abound and should be enough for whatever storage needs that you have.

Externally, you have the large storage space that comes with most units. For your convenience, the magnetic luggage locks come on every unit. It’ll keep those vertically flipped doors from swinging down on their hinges and smacking you on the head.

Quality Construction Touches

Did I mention that I love Winnebago? They are a standout company for so many reasons. These are a few of the quality construction reasons that I recommend this unit:

  • T60 Fiberglass / Gel Coat (Look at the previous unit for more details)
  • Plywood instead of particle board – Higher quality and less susceptible to damage
  • Huck Bolt Frame – Easier to replace and it doesn’t rust as easily
  • Fresh: 43 Gallons
  • Grey: 41 Gallons
  • Exterior Height: 10 Feet, 6 Inches
  • Exterior Length: 27 Feet, 11 Inches
  • Dry Weight: 5,300 Pounds
  • Gross Vehicle Weight: 6,869 Pounds
  • 2 Entrance Bathroom with Porcelain Toilet and Roomy Shower
  • Black Tank Flush – For Easy Cleaning
  • 13,500 BTU Air-conditioner
  • Related Floor Plans: 12
  • Average Price: $17,150

2020 Rockwood Mini Lite 2509S

I am trying not to say the same benefits to each of these units, but the truth is, good RVs and trailers contain a lot of the same basic features: Reliable construction, lots of storage, and room to live. At least, these are some of the features that I look for in mobile homes.

Slide Out Space

There are plenty of reasons to love the Mini Lite 2509S travel trailer , but there are downsides to everything. Thankfully, this particular downside is just an occasional irritation. When traveling, the space where the slide-out retracts can be annoying and a bit difficult to maneuver.

The dinette seating is nearly wedged against the kitchen counter. You can make it through the space, but you are forced to make a tall step over it. If you have advanced mobility issues, this could be occasionally problematic.

When extended, this intrusive seating is not a problem. You actually have a ton of room at that point. It has been commented that you have space reminiscent of a super slider rather than what you might expect from a name that includes “Mini Lite.”

Well utilized space; that about sums it up. You’ll find storage in every nook and cranny on this thing. Tiny spaces get tiny cabinets. The larger ones often have outside access ports. One of the hanging closets can be converted into a pantry if desired. You probably won’t be lacking space.

The beds/couches are fantastic

The industry standard for mattresses has degraded. Now, the too-thin mattresses require a costly upgrade to be comfortable. Rockwood is one of the few remaining companies that give thick, quality mattresses by default; twice the thickness of most mattresses on the market.

Their murphy bed is also very comfortable, and they offer a couple more features than your typical trailer. First, the pop-out footrests. The seating is very similar to the kind that you expect from modern theaters. On each side of the murphy bed, there are tray tables that can swivel from the armrest to the people sitting on each side of the bed/couch.

If you do not personally appreciate this convenience, it can easily be removed. They are not attached by bolts or screws, so you can simply pull up to pop them off of the armrests.

The one downside to the murphy bed is the lack of separation from the rest of the room. You do have a privacy curtain, though standard, I’ve never fully been able to appreciate. I like having my own room. It does give you an illusion of privacy which will probably work well enough for the average consumer.

The Lighting

All of the lights can be controlled in a typical fashion. Throw the switch, and the connected lights turn off. In addition to this, each of the lights can be pressed like a button to turn them off and on individually.

The Suspension

Better than most, some say that it is the “best in class,” and I wouldn’t disagree. The four-wheel independent torsion axle suspension system is fantastic and will put most comparable units to shame. When you find yourself on uneven terrain, you will appreciate having wheels with independent suspension. It gives you more control over the trailer when wheels keep bumping off of the ground. Also, it improves your cornering since it has an improved capability to keep contact with the ground.

Plywood Flooring

As I mentioned before, plywood flooring is great. It holds up better than particle board when it comes up against the elements. I don’t want to rehash, so look under the Minnie Drop 170K for more details.

The Grill Master’s Choice

If you love to grill, you will be happy to hear that the 2509S has a built-in pop-out Capital grill. That sounds good on its own, but that isn’t what makes this unit special. It also has a hookup for an additional grill right beside it.

If you need some counter space, you can use the Captain grill as a surface. It gains you a little bit of additional space, but not much. The cover for the grill does provide a flat surface, but that surface isn’t level with the rest of the counter. It is useful though, so it isn’t a wash.

2019 StarCraft Satellite 17RB

Why you will like it

The 17RB wasn’t built to be a fully-featured trailer with all the trimmings. It’s a compact unit; built to be towed by most SUVs. It’s short and narrow structure means that you will make sacrifices that most couples will not want to make. It is a situational recommendation.

As a long term unit, this will not be ideal. It does make a fantastic short-term weekend-camper for a couple with a child. If you happen to be single, then the full-time camping could work out. However, I would still recommend another unit for you.

Kitchen Slide

The kitchen is set on a slide which gives you a bit of extra room. It goes a long way in making the space more livable.

Sloped Fiberglass Roof

The roof of the 17RB is a long single piece of fiberglass that stretches from one end to the other. It eliminates many of the seams that would normally find on the roof of a trailer. This limits the vulnerability to moisture in a big way. The slope of the roof improves protection against the rain by running the water straight off of the camper instead of overflowing off of the sides.

Same Features at a Sample Size

When I mentioned sacrifices, I didn’t necessarily mean that you would go without features. It would best be described as sample-sized features. It is a free-trial trailer meant to entice you into committing to the subscription of a full-time camping RV.

Yikes, yeah, I know that’s a big one. The trailer is a hair under 20 feet long and 1 ½ feet narrower than the average trailer width , so there wasn’t much that could be done about it. That’s one reason why this will be perfect for a short-term camper, but not great for a long-term situation. I will say that they placed cabinets wherever they could.

The Bathroom Is a Little Bit Claustrophobic

The bathroom is located at the end of the 17RB, and the roof has a slope to it. You can probably guess the situation from that. The toilet and sink is located under the slope which means that if you are a man with an average height will need to lower your head just a tiny bit in that area.

It actually isn’t as bad as it sounds. When you are sitting on the toilet, you have plenty of space. The area to the front and sides doesn’t squeeze you, so you can probably sit like you normally do.

The shower is probably the worst part of the trailer. A six-foot-tall person will feel their hair brushing against the roof. And the narrow confines of the shower will mean that your arms will have a difficult time staying within the bounds of the shower curtain.

Bedding for three, but a table for two

The dinette does transform into a bed, so this camper works for those couples with a small child. The bed is a bit too small for most adults, so I wouldn’t recommend it for anyone fully grown. The one problem I have with this dinette/bed is the incongruence of having bedding for three people and a table that only has enough room for two.

2019 Lance 1575

Need something really small and lightweight? Of course, sacrifices must be made.

You won’t want to live in this camper, but this will be perfect for anyone that is constantly a weekend away from a camping trip. It doesn’t have all the features, but it is a great little trailer.

Under 3,000 dry weight

As I said, lightweight; weighing in at 2,775 pounds (Dry Weight), this trailer won’t even tax your average minivan. This makes the Lance 1575 an accessible starting trailer

Truma Hot Water System

The Truma Hot Water System is actually pretty cool. Not only does it quickly heat your water supply for your shower and tap, but it doubles as a heating system for your trailer. If you are paying good money to heat up the water, it just makes sense to use any escaping heat to keep yourself warm. I’ve read that it can make as much as a 7-degree difference.

Natural Lighting

One comment that seems to be said again and again regards all of the natural light that the skylights and windows open to the inside of the trailer.

More than just being powered, the 1575’s tongue jack will recall its last used height. This will make it easier to raise and lower the trailer off and onto your hitch.

The Large Front Window Opens

If you start to feel a bit too warm in the summer, you can simply pop open the sizeable window that is located at the front of the trailer. It will go a long way in cooling you off during those hot and dry summer days

The Dinette

Taking full advantage of the slide-out, the dinette is much larger than you would expect. It’s u-shaped, and as is traditional, transforms into a bed. What isn’t traditional is the length. It is wide, but it isn’t quite as wide as the spacious 22RB dinette/bed. It is, however, very long. Individuals a bit over 6 feet will stretch out comfortably without raising their feet over the cushions.

The Bathroom

I don’t know how, but Lance somehow managed to fit a bathtub into this tiny trailer. The toilet is a bit closer to the tub than I would like, but it’s a worthwhile concession to be able to have a nightly soak. There is a medicine cabinet, but there wasn’t room for any other storage.

Huge Outdoor Storage, Little Indoor Storage

Inside the trailer, there isn’t much storage. It will likely be problematic at times. This is partially countered by having an abundance of outdoor storage. Two massive compartments will hold pretty much anything that you might want to store.

Counter Space

The counter space can be both good and bad. If the sink and stove are left open, there is honestly not a lot of counter space. However, if you use the provided covers for both the sink and three-burner stove, you will find the counter space to actually be quite comfortable. The stove is flush with the counter, and I love that. I also love the stove’s cover which is glass and folds to the back. It looks clean.

Slide Out Slides Way Out

The slide-out extends out very far which could raise stability and durability concerns. However, the double rack and pinion setup is a very stable system and handles the weight with ease. There is also a slide topper above that helps to prevent dirt and rust from damaging the seals.

Solid Construction

A lot of times, the light-weight units sacrifice the quality of their construction to save on weight. The metal is a bit thinner, there is a bit less wood, and ideal parts are traded for lightweight counterparts. That isn’t the case here. You can really feel the difference in the solid plywood construction.

The quality of their work is well-known. They also have a reputation for backing their warranties . You are unlikely to be left in a bad situation.

Keystone 22RBPR Bullet Premier

Two Kitchens

This trailer is perfect for those that love to cook. You get two kitchens, and both of them are well-designed.

Inside Kitchen

In the indoor kitchen, you have a sink that is stainless steel, rectangular, under-mounted, and huge. The high rise faucet only makes your time the kitchen easier. There are a sufficient amount of kitchen cabinets. The trailer has an oven with a three burner stove .

The counter space can either be decent or great depending on what is covered. The sink comes with a cutting board quality cover and the stove has a super convenient attached glass cover that cleanly folds to the back; making it a simple switch between counter space and cooking top.

Outdoor kitchen

The hatch to the outdoor kitchen is located near the back of the camper. When open, it covers the kitchen. That covering will not protect the kitchen from rain coming from the side, but it will provide some shade on a sunny day. Inside, you will find a mini-fridge, a two-burner cooktop, plenty of countertop space, a bit of storage, and an admittedly cheap but useful sink. There is also a single outlet for small kitchen appliances.

Around the corner and connected to the bumper is a swing arm attachment for a mountable grill. When connected, you can pivot the grill around that corner and to the outdoor kitchen space. It sounds bulky, but it’s a smooth operation when it’s all in place.

Back inside and opposed to the indoor kitchen is the U-shaped dinette. It is above average in size, and it doesn’t just barely seat four people; it seats those four people pretty comfortably. The only complaint that I have is common to almost all trailers. It’s that the table supports hinder your legroom. When the dinette is transformed into a bed, that bed is sizable enough to sleep, two people.

A Private Bedroom

If you’ve lived in a small trailer before, you probably know that privacy is very hard to find. The cramped quarters rarely leave room for solitude, and a nice walk is usually the only way to get it. That’s not the case here. You can have your very own room with the 22RB. Contained inside is a residential queen bed, plenty of storage that includes two hanging closets, and a couple of nightstands. The room, cabinets, and finishings are all beautifully themed.

On the downside, you don’t have a lot of room, so you’ll probably find yourself crawling over the bed to access some of the storage.

Considering the size of the trailer, the bathroom is surprisingly comfortable. From a visual standpoint, the porcelain toilet can look a bit cramped. However, when you are sitting on it, you’ll be surprised by how much room you actually have.

The shower is roomy. You get quite a bit of headroom, and the space around your body is ample. The shower is contained in glass which is a nice upgrade from a flimsy curtain. It keeps the water contained and won’t look as ratty over time.

There is a noteworthy amount of storage in the bathroom. The area above the toilet is so large that you could probably climb into it. You’ve also got the typical storage from cabinets and drawers, but those spaces are topped off with an oversized linen closet. The trailer sleeps 3 to 4 people, and they designed the linen closet to hold a generous amount of space for each of them.

This particular trailer separates the front and back tires a bit farther than most. This increased separation improves the stability of the overall unit. This is due to the wider stance lowering the overall center of gravity.

The 8 Best Small Travel Trailers With Twin Beds (Under 24 FT)

Forest River Rockwood Geo Pro G15TB

One of the most popular types of RVs on the road today is the small travel trailer.

Thanks to their ease of use, affordability, and lightweight design.

However, one of their biggest drawbacks is their limited sleeping capacity, which can be both challenging to use and uncomfortable.

The good news though is that RV manufacturers are beginning to address this shortcoming with creative sleeping options, like pop-out sleeping berths, twin beds, and bunks .

Among these, twin-bed floor plans stand out though, as they provide better accessibility, improved walkability, and more flexible sleeping accommodations .

Which comes in handy on smaller travel trailers.

So for those looking for all the benefits of a small travel trailer but don’t want to compromise on comfortable sleeping accommodations, you’re in the right place.

In this blog post, we highlight the best small travel trailers with twin beds .

Top Compact Campers With Twin Beds (Smallest to Largest)

1. forest river rockwood geo pro g15tb, quick specs.

  • Average Cost : $24,000
  • Length : 15 Feet 8 Inches
  • Dry Weight : 2,667 Pounds
  • Sleeping Capacity : 2

  • Slide-Outs : None

The Forest River Rockwood Geo Pro G15TB , the sister RV to the Flagstaff E-Pro E15TB , is the smallest travel trailer available with twin beds , measuring just under 16 feet in length.

This distinction makes it not only the tiniest camper with twin beds but also one of the most compact fully-contained travel trailers on the market.

Forest River Rockwood Geo Pro G15TB Floorplan

Forest River Rockwood Geo Pro G15TB Floorplan

As the Geo Pro G15TB also offers a two-piece wet bath and a small kitchenette in addition to its twin beds.

Which when combined with its 200-watt solar panel, 1800-watt inverter, dual propane tanks, and shower-miser, allows the camper to boondock for extended periods of time.

The utility doesn’t stop there though, as even the twin bed setup in this Rockwood Geo Pro offers lots of flexibility.

Forest River Rockwood Geo Pro G15TB Bed

As the twin bed can be configured into three different arrangements, including standard twin beds, a dinette booth, or a king-size bed.

Allowing you to customize the twin bed setup to your particular needs.

2. Casita Independence

  • Starting At : $32,694
  • Length : 17 Feet
  • Dry Weight : 2,480 Pounds
  • Bathroom : 3-Piece Wet Bath

The Casita Independence is the second smallest travel trailer with twin beds, measuring a compact 17 feet.

However, this is no ordinary twin-bed travel trailer, as it’s also a fiberglass camper.

Making it one of only two fiberglass trailers currently on the market with twin beds .

If you’re new to RVing though, you might be wondering what a fiberglass camper is.

A fiberglass camper is a type of travel trailer made from molded fiberglass, as opposed to stick frame construction.

Casita Independence Floorplan

Casita Independence Deluxe Model Floor Plan

This construction technique gives the Independence as well as all other Casita models , a sleek rounded look as well as several benefits.

Including improved durability, reduced maintenance, and greater ability to resist water damage.

Making the Casita Independence a great option for those looking for a durable camper that requires minimal upkeep.

Plus, as an added bonus, the lightweight nature of fiberglass means that the Independence is easier to tow than other similar-sized trailers.

What truly sets the Casita Independence apart from other travel trailers though, is its twin-bed configuration.

As the Indepence offers rear twin beds that double as seating during the day .

3. Winnebago Micro Minnie 2108TB

  • Length : 22 Feet 5 Inches
  • Dry Weight : 4,040 Pounds
  • Sleeping Capacity : 4
  • Bathroom : 3-Piece Dry Bath
  • Slide-Outs : 1

The Winnebago Micro Minnie 2108TB is the first travel trailer on this list to offer a slide-out , which really opens up the interior of this small camper.

Because despite its small size it still offers a surprising amount of interior space.

A spacious interior isn’t the only thing this Micro Minnie has going for it though, as it also offers lots of comfort and convenience features as well.

Winnebago Micro Minnie 2108TB Floorplan

Winnebago Micro Minnie 2108TB Floorplan

Including features like a convertible dinette booth or an optional sleeper sofa, a fully equipped kitchen, and plenty of storage.

Plus, the 2108TB also has one of the largest dry baths you’ll find in a 22-foot travel trailer.

The real show stopper on this feature-packed camper though is its front twin beds, as it’s one of only two twin bed floorplans that Winnebago offers .

(The other one is the Winnebago Minnie 2327TB .)

Speaking specifically about the twin beds on this trailer though, the Micro Minnie 2108TB offers a large center nightstand between the two beds as well as storage underneath.

Plus, like most RV twin bed setups, the beds in the 2108TB can be converted into a single king bed as well.

To learn more about the Winnebago Micro Minnie 2108TB, check out Winnebago’s website by clicking here .

4. Gulf Stream Envision 21TBD

  • Average Cost : $24,500
  • Length : 22 Feet 6 Inches
  • Dry Weight : 3,655 Pounds

Just an inch longer than the Winnebago Micro Minnie 2108TB, the Gulf Stream Envision 21TBD shares many similarities with the above camper.

In fact, these two travel trailers share the exact same floorplan, offering front twin beds, a campside kitchen, and a full-width rear bath.

However, one major difference between these two campers is their cost.

Gulf Stream Envision 21TBD Floorplan

Gulf Stream Envision 21TBD Floor Plan

As the Envision 21TBD is considerably more affordable than the Micro Minnie 2108TB, with an average price tag of only $24,500.

Making the 21TBD a great option for those shopping for a twin-bed travel trailer on a budget .

Beyond its affordable price though, there are many reasons to choose the Gulf Stream Envision 21TBD.

Starting with its twin-bed layout, as it’s one of the few travel trailers to offer front twin beds .

Which makes it a great option for those seeking more accessible and flexible sleeping accommodations.

Gulf Stream Envision 21TBD Twin Beds

As the Envision 21TBD offers front twin beds with a center nightstand that can be converted into a single king bed.

Plus, if you need even more sleeping capacity, the camper’s dinette booth can be converted into an additional sleeping space.

Bringing the total sleeping capacity of the trailer up to four.

5. Oliver Legacy Elite II Twin Bed

  • Starting At : $74,000
  • Length : 23 Feet 6 Inches
  • Dry Weight : 4,900 Pounds
  • Sleeping Capacity : 3

Like the Casita Independence ( which is #2 on this list ), the Oliver Legacy Elite II Twin Bed is a fiberglass travel trailer.

This means the camper is primarily constructed using molded fiberglass, often in a two-shell configuration with an upper and lower section.

The advantages of this style camper are numerous but the main ones are that it makes the trailer lighter, more durable, and more weather-resistant.

However, there is one major difference between the Oliver and the Casita, and that’s their starting price, as the Legacy Elite II is $40,000 more compared to the Independence.

Why such a huge difference in price?

Oliver Legacy Elite II Twin Bed Floorplan

Oliver Legacy Elite II Twin Bed Floor Plan

To begin with, the Oliver is over 6 feet longer than the Casita, allowing the Legacy Elite II to offer considerably more interior space and amenities.

But the primary reason lies in the fact that the Legacy Elite II is often dubbed the “ yacht of fiberglass travel trailers “.

This premium fiberglass camper is unmatched in terms of build quality and high-end features.

Built to last a lifetime, it offers a one-of-kind double fiberglass hull that significantly enhances the trailer’s R-factor and four-season capability.

Available in two distinct floorplans, including the standard and the twin bed layout.

The twin bed layout remains a popular choice among RV enthusiasts due to its improved walkability and easier access to the beds.

Plus, as an added bonus it also provides three separate sleeping areas inside the camper, a feature that can prove useful depending on who’s going camping.

To learn more about the Oliver Legacy Elite II Twin Bed, you can visit Oliver’s website .

6. KZ RV Escape E201TB

  • Average Cost : $28,500
  • Length : 23 Feet 9 Inches
  • Dry Weight : 3,700 Pounds

Similar in many respects to the Winnebago Micro Minnie and Gulf Stream Envision, the KZ RV Escape E201TB features a front twin bed layout .

This design offers twin beds at the front of the trailer, separated by a central nightstand, which can also be converted into a single king bed.

The similarities don’t stop there though, as the Escape E201TB also offers a well-equipped campside kitchen and a convertible dinette booth on a slide-out.

However, differences emerge as you move to the back of the camper.

As the Escape features a rear corner bath, unlike the Micro Minnie and Envision, which have rear baths spanning the entire back wall of the camper.

KZ RV Escape E201TB Floorplan

KZ RV Escape E201TB Floor Plan

This layout difference comes with its own set of advantages and disadvantages.

On the upside, the corner bath in the E201TB frees up space, allowing the refrigerator to be positioned on the back wall.

This shift provides the kitchen with additional counter and cabinet space.

The downside, however, is a considerably smaller bathroom in the E201TB.

So, if all other factors are equal and you prioritize kitchen space in a small twin-bed travel trailer, the Escape E201TB is your ideal choice.

On the other hand, if a spacious bathroom is your priority, you might prefer the Micro Minnie 2108TB or the Envision 21TBD.

For a comprehensive look at the KZ RV Escape E201TB, including a 360-degree virtual tour, check out KZ RV’s website .

7. Airstream Flying Cloud 23FB

  • Average Cost : $100,000
  • Dry Weight : 5,000 Pounds

Airstream produces more travel trailers with twin beds than any other RV manufacturer.

However, one of their more compact models is the Airstream Flying Cloud 23FB , which can be customized with either a queen bed or twin beds.

Opting for twin beds though greatly improves the walkability in the bedroom, thanks to the center aisle it creates.

Plus, for taller campers, the twin bed configuration also provides a longer mattress compared to the queen bed configuration.

Airstream Flying Cloud 23FB Floorplan

Airstream Flying Cloud 23FB Twin Bed Floorplan

Regardless of your layout preference though, both versions offer class-leading comfort and luxury .

Thanks to the Flying Cloud 23FB’s seamless blend of timeless design and modern amenities.

This includes Airstream’s iconic rounded all-aluminum body, high-end finishes, custom cabinetry, and premium materials.

This 24-foot travel trailer truly has it all.

Airstream Flying Cloud 23FB Twin Beds

However, all this high-end design and iconic styling doesn’t come cheap though, as the Flying Cloud 23FB has an average price tag of $100K.

Making it the most expensive small twin-bed travel trailer you can buy .

Yet, for those who can afford it, it’s hard to go wrong with this stylish well-equipped 24-foot camper from Airstream.

For a deeper dive into the trailer, check out our review of the Airstream Flying Cloud 23FB by clicking here .

8. KZ RV Escape E20 Hatch

  • Average Cost : $25,000
  • Length : 23 Feet 10 Inches
  • Dry Weight : 3,560 Pounds
  • Bathroom : 2-Piece Dry Bath

The KZ RV Escape E20 Hatch is not only the largest twin-bed travel trailer on this list at just under 24 feet, but it’s also the most unique.

As the Escape E20 Hatch blends the comfort of a traditional travel trailer with the enhanced practicality of a toy hauler .

This trailer features a pop-up hatch and a rear cargo area, enabling users to load larger items like bikes and kayaks into the back of the camper.

KZ RV Escape E20 Hatch Floorplan

KZ RV Escape E20 Hatch Floorplan

Making it the ideal choice for adventurers who want to bring all their outdoor gear with them while camping and traveling .

However, just because the trailer offers the practicality of a toy hauler , doesn’t mean it skimps on creature comforts.

As the E20 Hatch offers a four-person sleeping capacity, a fully equipped kitchen, and a two-piece dry bath.

KZ RV Escape E20 Hatch Twin Beds

Plus, like all other travel trailers on this list, it offers twin beds that can be converted into one large king bed .

Which gives the trailer a lot of flexibility when it comes to sleeping accommodations.

The 14 Best Small Travel Trailers

small travel trailers with 2 slides

Even though more people than ever before are hitting the open road and experiencing the exhilaration of overlanding, not everyone has the financial means to purchase a recreational vehicle, an Airstream Classic, or a rig that was built specifically for them. A solo weekend excursion may be enough to satiate the need for adventure in some people (even if it results in new levels of wanderlust).

Small travel trailers are an excellent choice for individuals who yearn for the thrill of exploration but do not have the resources or the space necessary to maintain the typical large vehicle associated with a bigger travel trailer.

If you’ve always had the urge to hit the open road and see the world, purchasing a small travel trailer might be the best option for you. You can attach one of these compact trailers to the back of your car and travel with all of the comforts of home.

But how do you determine which of the numerous available choices is most suitable for you? This article will examine the best compact travel trailers that are currently available on the market and provide helpful guidance for selecting the travel trailer that is best suited to meet your requirements. When you look at these mobile homes, you won’t be able to help but daydream about hitting the open road for a cross-country adventure or a quick weekend getaway.

The class of vehicles known as small travel trailers has its own distinct personality. Large corporations compete alongside newer, more nimble businesses. We will use the following definition of compact travel trailers for the purposes of this discussion:

Mini-campers are available at a reasonable price, with many models retailing for less than $10,000. On the other hand, the price will be significantly higher if there are any conveniences (like a bathroom) present. On the other hand, given their diminutive size and low weight, they are remarkably simple to manipulate. In addition, the overwhelming majority can be transported using a standard automobile.

In this article, we will be focusing on lightweight camping trailers that have a GVWR of less than 3,550 pounds and a length of less than 23 feet. These are the types of trailers that can be easily towed by a midsize truck or SUV (and in some cases, even a regular sedan) to fit in an average-sized garage.

Although the Basecamp does not look like other Airstream travel trailers, it is built to meet the high-quality standards of the company. In fact, its low profile and aerodynamic shape naturally lower wind resistance.

In a time when sleek forms, industrial materials, and vintage aesthetics are all the rage, it’s no surprise that Airstream trailers are selling like hotcakes. This is all expertly blended in the Airstream.

Their signature curved metal architecture is not only striking in appearance but also expertly crafted. It’s no different for the Airstream Basecamp. Both of these floor plans make the most of their 16 square feet by providing spacious interiors and well-considered layouts.

There is also a wet bathroom and bench seating that converts into a full-size bed inside the Basecamp. The front kitchen has a two-burner gas stove, a sink, a microwave, and a small refrigerator.

The Airstream Basecamp lives up to its reputation for style and functionality. The solar front window protection and the three-inch lift kit are two of our favorite eye-catching features, as they keep the interior cooler on hot, sunny days and increase off-grid driving clearance.

  • weighing 1,200 to 2,000 pounds dry
  • 7 distinct floor plans
  • Up to four people can be accommodated
  • $15,000 to $20,000

Since 1972, Minnesota has produced the iconic Scamp Travel Trailer. Instead of mass production, each coach is built to the customer’s specifications. They can select the size, layout, and interior features that they want.

According to some owners, the construction took only a few weeks. The interactive aspect of the experience was what they enjoyed the most. Throughout the process, the manufacturer sent pictures and responded to questions.

Customers can pick up their finished unit at Scamp’s headquarters in Backus, Minnesota. If a customer is unable to arrive, Scamp will go above and beyond to assist them. The RV can be delivered to the customer anywhere in the continental United States.

Scamp comes in three different sizes. The 13- and 16-foot models are small travel trailers, while the 19 is a fifth wheel. Each size has a standard version and a deluxe version. The 13-footer has two layouts, while the 16-footer has five. Some models have combined toilet and shower wet baths, while others do not.

Each trailer has its own set of costs. Scamp does not publish its starting prices. Some owners have discussed their pricing on internet forums. These prices have generally ranged from $15,000 to $20,000, depending on the model, package, and additional features selected.

The 13-foot standard layouts include either a sofa or a dinette up front. The first layout includes a sofa that can be converted into a bunk bed. The second layout swaps out the sofa for a wet bath and a second closet. In the deluxe version, you can choose between a dinette and a wet bath.

The rear dinettes that fold out to form the master bedroom remain constant. They also have full kitchens with sinks and small refrigerators.

Standard models provide a more basic approach to camping. Additional packages include a 1.9 cubic foot refrigerator in kitchens. Many electronic features, such as TV hookups, are optional. Customers who want to customize their amenities can choose from these models.

Deluxe models have a more comprehensive package offering than standard models. Larger features and amenities are available. Many electronics, such as TV hookups, air conditioners, vinyl flooring, and other high-end features, can be added.

KZ RV Escape

KZ created this series with everyone in mind. One of their models is aimed at off-road enthusiasts. The E191BH is taller and has 15-inch mud tires. It also has heated holding tanks that are electronically controlled, which is useful for off-season camping.

The E171MB has a one-of-a-kind storage feature. A storage space with both inside and outside access is located on the slide-out that houses the refrigerator. There is also a queen-size Murphy bed that shares space with a sofa. A full kitchen and bathroom complete the interior of the coach.

The teardrop trailer was given new life by Little Guy Trailer Company, which brought it into the modern era. This RV manufacturer has introduced a fully functional teardrop with all the latest amenities. They honor the teardrop’s heritage by adhering to the maximum weight that a car can tow.

The Little Guy Mini Max is a lightweight RV that still has all the amenities of a larger model. A complete kitchen is hidden within the light maple hardwood cabinetry. A top-of-the-line four-cubic-foot refrigerator is included. A refrigerator of this size is unusual in RVs of this size.

Max the Small Guy is only four feet in length and weighs around 1,900 kilograms. Many 21-foot trailers exceed this weight. The ability to use a compact SUV as a tow vehicle is a great feature of this coach.

The dinette’s adaptability is one of its best features. Usually, they can be transformed into a double bed. This one can be set up with either two twin beds or one queen bed, depending on your preference. Hydraulics support the dinette as it slides along the bed’s slats to create a flat surface in the middle.

These coaches’ soaking showers were designed with care. Toilet paper wrappers are impervious to water. The water-saving shower uses only 2.20 gallons per minute. This roomy bathroom ensures that no one will accidentally brush up against the toilet while getting cleaned up.

The Little Guy Max was named Best in Show at the RVIA National RV Trade Show by RV Pro Magazine in 2018. The winning RV manufacturer had a throwback look but also included cutting-edge amenities and plenty of space.

Permanent queen-size beds are standard in most room layouts. Dinettes that fold out into beds, bunk beds, and murphy beds are some of the additional sleeping options. The R-coach Pod’s is renowned for its innovative use of space. That’s why it’s lasted so long at the top of the charts.

A solar panel system consisting of a 110-watt panel and a 1,000-watt inverter is a popular upgrade. A fully functional outdoor kitchen can be added to some models right from the factory. If you want to make the most of your outdoor space, the R-Pod comes with a screen room that can be attached to your awning.

Why Choose a Small Travel Trailer?

When it comes to travel trailers, there are endless sizes and models available on the market. However, small travel trailers have become increasingly popular in recent years for a variety of reasons.

Small travel trailers offer flexibility and freedom while traveling. Most vehicles can tow them without the need for a large truck or SUV. This means you can explore more remote areas that may not be accessible with larger RVs.

Small travel trailers tend to be more affordable than their larger counterparts. Not only is the initial purchase price lower but so are the ongoing costs, such as maintenance and fuel expenses.

Another advantage of choosing a small travel trailer is its compact size, which makes storage much easier when not in use. You won’t need an extra-large garage or storage unit to keep your trailer safe from damage during off-season months.

These smaller units often come with creative floor plans that maximize space efficiency, making them perfect for couples or families with one child seeking adventure on the road without sacrificing comfort and convenience.

There are many advantages to owning a small travel trailer for those who value flexibility, affordability, and unique design features while exploring different destinations across North America!

What to Look for When Buying a Small Travel Trailer

  • They are considered “self-contained” because everything you need is present in the trailer itself. There’s also a subset of trailers that are equipped only with outdoor kitchens.
  • There’s a cap of 23 feet on the enclosed trailer’s length. Even if it’s part of a line that also includes larger trailers, a travel trailer is still considered “small” if it’s shorter than 23 feet in length.
  • The maximum allowable dry weight is 3,500 pounds. The lightest trailers will be given priority. Due to their construction, some small campers can reach altitudes of 4,000 meters. Some of the trailers are too large or cumbersome to be considered “small travel trailers,” so keep that in mind. Below, we’ve highlighted the models that are too big to fit in our trailer.

How to Choose the Right Small Travel Trailer for You

When it comes to choosing the right small travel trailer, there are a few key factors to consider. First and foremost, think about your specific needs and preferences. Are you a solo traveler or do you have a family? How much storage space do you require? Do you prefer a compact design or something more spacious?

Next, consider the towing capacity of your vehicle. You’ll want to make sure that the small travel trailer you choose is compatible with your car or truck. Check the weight limits and ensure that your vehicle can handle it safely.

Another important aspect to think about is the layout and features of the trailer. Consider how many sleeping areas you need, as well as amenities such as kitchen facilities, bathroom options, and entertainment systems.

In addition to functionality, aesthetics also play a role in choosing the right small travel trailer for you. Look for designs and color schemes that resonate with your personal style and taste.

Don’t forget about budget considerations. Small travel trailers come in various price ranges, so determine how much you’re willing to invest in this adventure on wheels.

By taking all of these factors into account – your needs, towing capacity, layout preferences, aesthetics, and budget – you’ll be able to narrow down your options and find the perfect small travel trailer for an unforgettable journey ahead!

The Benefits of Small Camping Trailers

Small camping trailers offer a multitude of benefits that make them an attractive option for travelers. One of their main advantages is their compact size, which allows for easy maneuverability and flexibility on the road. With a small travel trailer, you can navigate narrow roads, fit into tight campsites, and even park in residential areas without much hassle. Another benefit of these trailers is their affordability. Small travel trailers are generally more budget-friendly compared to larger RVs or motorhomes. They require less fuel to tow and have lower maintenance costs. This makes them an ideal choice for those who want to explore the world on a limited budget. Additionally, small camping trailers offer convenience and comfort. Despite their size, they are equipped with essential amenities such as sleeping quarters, a kitchenette, storage space, and bathroom facilities (in some cases). These features ensure that you have everything you need while traveling without sacrificing comfort. Furthermore, small travel trailers encourage a minimalist lifestyle. Their limited space forces travelers to prioritize what they truly need for their journey and eliminate unnecessary clutter from their lives. This can lead to a more simplified way of living and promote mindfulness about consumption habits. Lastly but importantly, small camping trailers allow travelers to immerse themselves in nature. They provide opportunities for off-the-grid adventures where breathtaking landscapes become your backyard every day. Whether it’s exploring national parks or campgrounds off the beaten path, these compact trailers allow you to get closer to nature and experience its wonders firsthand. In conclusion: Small camping trailers offer numerous benefits, including maneuverability on the road; affordability; convenience; encouraging minimalism; and immersing travelers in nature’s beauty

The Drawbacks of Small Travel Trailers

When it comes to small travel trailers, there are certainly many advantages. However, it’s important to consider the drawbacks as well before making a decision. One of the main drawbacks of small travel trailers is their limited space. While they are perfect for solo travelers or couples, families may find them too cramped. This means less storage space for belongings and limited living space inside the trailer. Another drawback is that smaller trailers often have fewer amenities compared to larger ones. This could mean sacrificing certain luxuries, such as a full-size kitchen or bathroom facilities. It’s important to prioritize what features are essential for your travel experience. Small travel trailers also tend to have less stability on the road compared to larger ones. They can be more prone to swaying in windy conditions or when passing large vehicles. This may require careful driving and adjustments while on the road. Additionally, if you enjoy entertaining guests or having extra sleeping accommodations, a small trailer may not be suitable. These trailers typically have limited seating areas and only enough sleeping space for a couple or small family. Resale value can be another drawback of small travel trailers. As they are initially more affordable than larger models, their value tends to depreciate faster over time.

While these drawbacks should be considered when choosing a small travel trailer, they may not outweigh the benefits depending on your specific needs and preferences.

Small travel trailers offer numerous benefits for travelers who prefer a compact and efficient camping experience. They are easy to tow and maneuver, making them ideal for both novice and experienced campers. These trailers also provide a cozy and comfortable living space while allowing you to connect with nature.

In this article, we have explored the world of small travel trailers and highlighted some of the best options available. When it comes to choosing the right small travel trailer for your adventures, it’s important to consider factors such as size, amenities, weight capacity, and budget.

However, it’s essential to acknowledge that there are also drawbacks associated with small travel trailers. Limited space can be challenging if you’re traveling with a large group or carrying bulky equipment. Additionally, some smaller models may lack certain amenities or features found in larger RVs.

The decision on whether to choose a small travel trailer depends on your personal preferences and needs. Consider how much space you require, what amenities are essential for your travels, and what type of towing vehicle you have at your disposal.

To make an informed choice about which small travel trailer is best suited for you, take the time to research different brands and models. Read reviews from fellow travelers who have firsthand experience with these trailers.

Remember that finding the perfect small travel trailer is all about striking a balance between comfort and functionality during your outdoor excursions without compromising or breaking the bank.

13 of the Best Small Travel Trailers on the Market

Published on November 23rd, 2019 by Brian Newman

Life is full of limits, which is why the RV lifestyle is so appealing. It allows people from all walks of life to travel and explore. Just take a look at the parking lot of the Grand Canyon. You’ll see RVs of every type, length, weight, and manufacturer from every corner of the country. Many RV consumers have a desire to keep their more fuel-efficient vehicles, yet they still want a travel trailer that has all the amenities needed to take week-long trips. New construction materials are making RVs lighter, stronger, and more versatile. Features that exist in 30 plus foot coaches are now seen in trailers as small as 15 feet or less – small travel trailers.

The small RV category is unique unto itself. Big-name manufacturers compete with independent small companies. Many of the small companies create new technologies the big names haven’t even thought of yet. For our discussion, we will define small travel trailers by the following criteria:

  • They are self-contained- this means that all features are within the coach itself. Trailers that only have outdoor kitchens fall within another category.
  • The coach does not have an interior length of more than 23 feet in length. They may be a part of a series that have floorplans that exceed this length, but we will define this.
  • Dry weights will not exceed 3,500 pounds. We will focus our attention on those that are the lightest in weight. Some do go as high as 4,000, but this is an effect of materials used. Some of the trailers are a part of a series that extend out of the small travel trailer parameters. We will feature those models that fall within our small trailer limits.

Here are the 13 Best Small Travel Trailers on the Market

The 17MBS is 19.9 feet in length and has a 3,095-pound dry weight. The front has a murphy bed that shares space with a sofa. This is a feature that many manufacturers use as a space saver. As a trade-off, Jayco gives you a separate toilet and shower instead of a combined wet bath for an amenity balance.

This particular coach is an off-road model with 15 inch Goodyear mud tires and a raised chassis. They seal the underbelly with a layer of Astro-Foil to protect it and as an insulator. Despite its size, there is still plenty of space for linens, wardrobe, and pantry items within.

The 17RK is the exact length and dry weight of the 17MBS but is very different. The front of the coach has a permanent queen-size bed. It has a driver-side slide out that with a U-shaped dinette and refrigerator/microwave. The kitchen counter takes up the entire width of the rear. The tradeoff is a combination wet bath.

As you can see, Jayco does a lot with the space. Even their compact trailer has its advantages. If you are looking to get into the small travel trailer RV lifestyle, Jayco is a great place to start.

2. Casita Travel Trailers

  • 16-17 feet in length
  • 1,970- 2,480 pounds dry weight
  • 5 different floorplans/models
  • Sleep up to 6 people
  • $17,225- $20,289

Casita is a family-owned business that started in 1983. Their coaches have many configurations you can choose from. Their products can travel off-road and off-season with enough room to fit everyone.

Casita designs their trailers based on two sizes. Their two-piece fiberglass shells come in either 16 feet or 17 feet. Each size then has a standard or deluxe package. The deluxe models offer an all-in-one toilet/shower wet bath and black water holding tank.

Standard packages use the wet bath area for added storage or sitting/sleeping space. This allows for more people to be comfortable. It also means you would have to rely on campground facilities for restrooms and showers. If your camping style is more off-grid, the deluxe package may fit your needs better.

Casita matches a floorplan with a model. This means that if you want the two- twin bed floorplan, you would choose the Independence model. Whichever model you choose, weight and pricing are the same. The manufacturer sets the price of their products.

  • The 16-foot standard dry weight is 1,970 pounds and is $17,225.
  • The 16-foot deluxe dry weight is 2,185 pounds and is $19,279.
  • The 17-foot standard dry weight is 2,210 pounds and is $18,320.
  • The 17-foot deluxe dry weight is 2,480 pounds and is $20,289.

3. Scamp Trailers

  • 13 to 16 feet in length
  • 1,200- 2,000 pounds dry weight
  • 7 different floorplans
  • Between $15,000- $20,000

The Scamp Travel Trailer – the iconic small travel trailers – has been a Minnesota manufacturer since 1972. Instead of mass production, each coach is built to the customer’s specifications. They can choose the size, layout, and interior features they want.

According to some owners, the building time took a matter of a few weeks. What they enjoyed the most out of the experience was the interactive experience. The manufacturer sent pictures and answered questions during the whole process.

Once completed, customers pick up their unit at Scamp’s headquarters in Backus, Minnesota. If the customer can’t get there, Scamp will go the extra mile to help their customers out. The company can deliver the RV to the customer anywhere in the continental United States.

Scamp has three sizes. The 13 and 16-foot models are small travel trailers, and the 19 is a fifth wheel . Each size has a standard and deluxe version. The 13 foot has two layouts, while the 16 foot has five. Some models have a combination toilet/shower wet baths, others do not.

Costs are unique to each trailer. Scamp does not publish their starting prices. Some owners have discussed their pricing on forums across the internet. Generally, these price points have come in between $15,000 to $20,000 depending on the model, package, and additional features they have chosen.

The 13-foot standard layouts give you either a sofa or a dinette upfront. The first layout gives you a sofa that can convert into a bunk bed. The second layout replaces the sofa for a wet bath and a second closet. In the deluxe version, the choice is between a dinette or a wet bath.

The features that stay constant are the rear dinettes that fold out to make the master bedroom. They also come with full kitchens that include sinks and small refrigerators.

Standard models offer a more basic approach to camping. Kitchens have a 1.9 cubic foot refrigerator as a part of additional packages. Many electronic features like TV hookups are optional. Customers that want to choose individual amenities may decide on these models.

Deluxe models have more of a complete package offering than the standard models. Bigger features and amenities are available. Many electronics like TV hookups, air conditioners, vinyl flooring, and other high-end features can be added.

4. Airstream Bambi

  • 16 to 22 feet in length
  • 3,000- 4,000 pounds dry weight
  • 4 different floorplans
  • Sleeps up to 4 people
  • $49,000 to $58,000

With the retirement of the Sport, Airstream further developed their Bambi series. This small coach gave the company the ability to join in on the small travel trailers market. It also stays within the weight capacities small coach campers are looking for.

It comes in a 16, 19, 20, and 22-foot floor plan. Each one has a fixed double bed, dinette, full kitchen, and bathroom. The 16-foot model has a combined wet bath, but the others have full bathrooms. Each dinette folds down to allow an additional two sleepers.

The Bambi is spacious for its size. Airstream uses light colors in the coach to keep the interior bright and enhance the open feel. They also keep to their European styling to give the unit a sophisticated look.

As expected, Airstream uses only the best when it comes to its amenities. The bed has a memory foam mattress. The entertainment system uses JBL sound equipment and an LED TV. There are also USB ports and LED lights throughout the RV itself.

Each coach has an optional solar panel system that can be factory installed. Otherwise, each one comes prewired for external solar panel setups.

5. KZ RV Escape

  • 18.10- 27.3 feet in length

KZ designs this series with everybody in mind. Their one of the models caters to the off-road enthusiast. The E191BH sits higher and comes with 15-inch mud tires. It also has electronic-controlled heated holding tanks that help with off-season camping.

The E171MB has a unique storage feature. On the slide-out that holds the refrigerator is a storage space that has both an inside and outside access. It also has a queen-size murphy bed that shares its space with a sofa. The coach has a full bathroom and kitchen that completes the interior space.

The E171 MB is 19.8 feet in length and has a dry weight of 3,170 pounds. Your midsize-SUV won’t have any problems towing this coach.

6. Little Guy Travel Trailers

  • 17.2- 21.0 feet in length
  • 1,993- 3,140 pounds dry weight
  • 17 different floorplans
  • Sleep up to 3 people
  • $20,000- $30,000

Little Guy Trailer Company has reinvigorated the teardrop trailer for the 21st century. This RV maker has created a self-contained teardrop with modern conveniences. They keep with the tradition of the teardrop by keeping tow weights at car towing capacities.

Little Guy Mini Max is light enough to use your car/SUV crossover, yet gives you features of a full-size RV. The bright maple hardwood cabinetry contains a full kitchen. This also includes a category-leading four cubic foot fridge. Many RVs of this size don’t have refrigerators this large.

The Little Guy Max is four feet long and weighs in a little under 2,000 pounds. Many 21-foot trailers weigh more than this. One of the great features of this coach is the ability to hook up your small SUV as your tow vehicle.

The versatility of the dinette is quite special. Most fold down to a double bed. This one gives you the option of either two twin beds or a queen-size configuration. This works by having the dinette on a hydraulic and sliding bed slats that support the middle of the bed.

A lot of thought went into the wet bath of these coaches. Toilet paper covers are waterproof. The shower uses 2.2 gallons a minute to conserve water. The space allows a person to move around without knocking into the toilet while cleaning off.

RV Pro Magazine rated the Little Guy Max Best in Show for 2018 at the RVIA National RV Trade Show. The RV maker won for its nostalgic styling, modern features, and amount of storage for its size.

7. Forest River R-Pod

  • 2,497- 3,600 pounds dry weight
  • 15 different floorplans
  • $14,500- $30,000

The Forest River R-Pod is celebrating its 10th year in production. Many of the features and amenities on this RV borrow from its big brothers and sisters. With 15 different floorplans to choose from, there is an R-Pod for everyone in this small category.

The 10th-anniversary package comes with many upgraded standard features. Furrion sound systems, solar charging ports, and seamless kitchen countertops are some. Other popular features include a pet-friendly frame-mounted utility hook for your dog.

Most of the floorplans have permanent queen-size beds. Other sleeping spaces include fold-down dinettes, bunk beds, and murphy beds. The R-Pod is a master of the ability to make the most of the space in its coach. This is why it has been so popular for so long.

Popular add-ons include a solar panel system with a 110-watt panel and a 1,000-watt inverter. Some models can have a factory built-in outdoor kitchen added as well. The R-Pod has a screen room that attaches to your awning to complete your outdoor space.

8. Homegrown Trailers- Timberline

  • 18.10 feet in length
  • 4,150- 4,350 pounds dry weight
  • Sleep up to 5 people
  • $50,000- $57,500

When tent camping does not work out for the whole family, most get into the RV lifestyle. The founder of Homegrown Trailers took that a step further. He and his team built a trailer out of sustainable materials in Kirkland, Washington.

The Timberline is an 18.10-foot travel trailer that uses green materials in its construction. Both the interior and exterior are made from wood paneling. Wool insulation creates a strong barrier against the outdoor temperatures.

The off-grid package has a 600-800 solar panel wattage to power all the electronic needs of the coach. The wet bath area gives you the option of a clean or composting toilet. For easy access, the grey water tank is external and simple to drain.

Everything about this coach is green and sustainable. They did not forget about styling and comfort. The aerodynamic shape is teardrop inspired to cut down on wind resistance. There is plenty of headroom and floorspace to allow up to five people to move around.

The coach has plenty of modern conveniences too. A full kitchen with a refrigerator allows meal preparation. Heat and air conditioning units are optional add-ons as well.

9. Oliver Travel Trailers

  • 18.5- 23.6 feet in length
  • 3,400- 4,600 pounds dry weight
  • 6 different floorplans
  • $48,900- $55,900

When you buy an Oliver Travel Trailer (a.k.a. “Ollie”), you become a member of the club. Oliver sells its trailers factory direct. They only build them per customer order. Once built, buyers pick up their trailers at the factory in Hohenwald, Tennessee.

Currently, Ollie makes the Elite I and II. The Elite I has two floorplans, and Elite II has four. The main bed is either permanent or a fold-down dinette. The third sleeping space is either a twin bed or two-seater dinette that folds down.

Ollies come with many standard features that compete with many big names in the RV world. What makes Ollie so unique are the many add-ons that others don’t offer. One surprising option is dual awnings. One for the door side, and another for the opposite side of the coach.

They also offer thought-provoking ideas. Specialized materials that clear away moisture from condensation areas. External storage baskets and receivers for bike racks. Propane water heaters and various electronic signal boosters. There are many other optional add-ons worth exploring.

Once a customer has worked with their sales representative, the order goes to the factory. Production time can take 8 to 10 weeks to build your RV. Once it’s ready, the customer comes to the factory and spends their first night in their new coach.

The buying process is as unique as the trailer itself.

10. Lance Trailer

  • 14- 25 feet in length
  • 2,600-5,875 pounds dry weight
  • 12 different floorplans
  • Sleep up to 7 people
  • $27,500- $66,400

Of the many big names that need mention, Lance is the unexpected winner. Their lineup offers nine models that are 22 feet or less in length. Only three of them have a dry weight under 4,000 pounds. They may be heavy, but their design is extraordinary.

In fact, one of their models, the Lance 2075 is the Best in Show award winner with RV Pro Magazine for 2020 . This model won due to its best technique of separating the bedroom area from the living room space. It has a queen-size bed in front and a U-shaped dinette in the rear that is on a slide-out.

The lightest model makes the best use of its 14 feet of interior space. It has a front sofa that folds out to a double bed. The rear has a full bathroom instead of a wet bath. It also includes a full kitchen.

Instead of trying to squeeze in a dinette, the designers placed two padded chairs with a small table. This allows the RVers to sit and relax in front of a big picture window. No matter how it’s used, there is still a feeling of spaciousness and relaxation.

If you look at Lance’s line up, all the models they have a focus on one point. Their small travel trailers give their users the most use of open space. The company wants its customers to have a relaxing experience, no matter the length of the RV.

11. Happier Camper

  • 10 feet in length
  • 1,100 pounds dry weight
  • Numerous different floorplans
  • $24,950 starting price

Have you ever looked around your RV and said to yourself, “I wish I had…?” If you owned an HC1 from Happier Camper, your response might be, “I have a box for that.”

This Los Angeles, California company has taken modular camping to the next level. The basis of the coach’s interior starts with 20-inch x 20-inch plastic boxes. Some are for storage. Others are more complicated. One can be the deluxe kitchen with pull out fridge, stove, and sink. Another could hold the wooden countertops for tables.

To configure the things you need, you place and stack the boxes according to what you need at the time. If you need to use the kitchen and dinette, you place the kitchen setup on top of storage boxes. The tabletop fits into the position between the seating.

At night, you place all the boxes on the same level and the sleeping pad over them. This gives you enough sleeping space for up to five people at night. With the large windows on three of the walls, there is plenty of cross breeze at night to keep things cool.

To add to the appeal, the designers gave their trailer a classic 1950’s nostalgic appeal. It comes in seven different colors you can choose from.

Additional options include a loading ramp to help you load your dirt bikes and other toys. A 100-watt solar panel and inverter. An elevated frame with off-road tires. To add space, they have a screen room that connects to the tailgate. You can also get a dry flush toilet.

With this weight and design, almost any vehicle can tow it. The honeycomb base and dual fiberglass shell are strong enough to hold anything. The Adaptiv components come in packages that add weight. With the components, you should assume around 2,000 pounds fully loaded.

12. inTech RV Sol

  • 16- 19 feet in length
  • 2,590- 3,375 pounds dry weight
  • 3 different floorplans
  • $24,890- $35,000

When most people think of small travel trailers, luxury isn’t the first thing that comes to mind. The designers at inTech have changed that type of thinking. Their line of Sol trailers has combined luxury, unique style, and small size in new ways.

The first thing you notice is the shape of their trailers. The tilt-front shape adds space without sacrificing aerodynamics. In the Dawn model, the front panoramic windshield allows those at the dinette to enjoy the view. The Eclipse places the kitchen upfront. This gives plenty of natural light while preparing meals.

The luxury-style amenities, regardless of model, give a high-class feel to the RV. The kitchen area has stainless steel amenities that include a 3.7 cubic foot refrigerator. The flooring is a woven vinyl that is a perfect combination of style and resilience to dirt and stains.

The dinettes in both models fold out into the bed in these coaches. In the Dawn, the measurements are 48 x 80. The Eclipse is 55 x 80. When you compare these to residential beds, you get the length of a queen.

The wet baths are very large in both models. Whichever model you choose, you will receive a real porcelain toilet. inTech made sure to give you plenty of room to take a standing shower and not feel claustrophobic. Their wet baths are the largest in their class.

13. Hymer Touring GT

  • 18.11 feet in length
  • 2,500 pounds dry weight
  • 1 American floorplan, 11 German floorplans
  • Sleeps up to 3 people
  • $18,995- $20,995

The appeal of European design has become a new trend in the United State in recent years. This has given consumers new form and function options. In the Class B motorhome category, European-based chassis have benefits never seen before.

Eriba RV decided to take this a step further. This past year, they decided to open a North American Division here in the United States. This German company introduced its Hymer Touring GT to America. While it may be new to the U.S., this coach dates back to the late 1950s.

The first unique feature of this coach is its expandable roof. Once opened, it gives almost a 6.4 feet height within the coach.

The current layout available in the United States has a king-size bed in the rear of the coach. This is unique since it’s truly rare for small travel trailers to have a permanent bed of this size. The front of the coach has a fold-down dinette that can accommodate an additional sleeper.

The cabinetry follows European style with its rounded fronts. This gives additional inches to each storage space. The faucet folds down into the sink and has a cover that folds on top of it. The two-burner gas stove also has a cover. This allows the added counter space for meal prep.

The bathroom is full-featured. It comes with a cassette toilet that has it’s own external bay for easy draining. The shower is big enough to clean up without banging your arms against the walls.

Another unique feature is their window and door screens. For the door, there is a hidden screen that pulls out from the side. Pull-down sunscreens and privacy shades act as screens as well. When you open the windows, the hatches act as hard-shell awnings to prevent rain and other weather from coming into the coach.

Final Thoughts

Having more slides on the travel trailer is a great thing as they provide extra space. But having RVs with opposing slides is far better because they significantly expand the space. This is especially important when it comes to kitchens and living areas, the rooms where people gather the most. So it makes sense that campers want their spaciousness.

Although the opposite slides come with risks such as poor performance, leakage and stuck slides, campers agree that the spaciousness they get with opposing slides is worth the risk. Keep in mind that there are a number of travel trailers with opposing slides, the ones we talked about in this text are just a small fraction of the offer on the market.

Considerations of Travel Trailers With Opposing Slides

Fifth wheels and travel trailers with dual slide outs are great because they easily add additional interior space. However, having a travel trailer with opposing slides is even better since it really opens up the space. This is especially significant if the two slides are in the kitchen and living area. After all, it’s usually the area where most people congregate, so it makes sense to make it as large as possible.

All RV slideouts have built in risks, such as water leaks, poor construction, stuck slides and other problems. But in most cases, the additional interior square footage is a no-brainer for many RV owners. There are many trailers with opposing slides to choose from. Our list is just the tip of the iceberg.

Are All Small Travel Trailers The Same

Some people look for practicality in a small camper trailer, while others need some home comforts while traveling. To meet all demands, manufacturers have created a wide range of travel trailers while addressing the diverse demands of travelers and campers.

So, to answer the question in a single word, no, each travel trailer is equipped with its perks and flexes. Some of the travel trailers are decent sized, they contain enough space to fix a TV , and you can even fix a couch in there as well.

If you want to travel light, then a small travel trailer that weighs around 3000 pounds would be perfect for you. But if you want a small camper trailer which has almost everything that is necessary to you to go through the day, then a travel trailer of a size slightly larger than this would be a better option for you.

The smaller the travel trailer generally means the easier to tow, hence giving more control to its consumers. If you want to take your truck on different routes, then a smaller truck will play in your favor as it is easier to tow. Going for a little time out in the hills? You can easily take your small travel trailer with you.

Restrictions While Traveling

The major disadvantage of having a small travel trailer is that there are limited amenities. You can’t take everything you want as there is less space inside the trailer. Similarly, you can’t have many guests coming along with you.

Aspects to Consider Before Buying a Small Travel Trailer

If you are seriously considering to buy a small travel trailer, it is important to keep several points in your mind.

It is important that whichever trailer you buy satisfies your needs. So have a clear idea regarding your needs and then narrow down your list of trailers depending on your requirement. The more you spend, the more luxuries and better construction you'll get. But for your first trailer, it's ok to go with something cheaper, after all, you may not take to the great outdoors.

Reliability

It's better if you invest in a trailer that is made up of a structure that is reliable and durable. You don’t want to buy a trailer that needs repairing all too often. Sure, price comes into this, but you can get good quality trailers at reasonable prices.

If you are a family of five, then a small trailer for two won’t help you out. Choosing a trailer while keeping your storage and space demands in check is always something you should consider.

Cautious Considerations to Keep in Mind

A couple of points will help you land on a straight and profitable deal when it comes to travel trailer shopping. These include:

Heater and Generator

Be mindful that you will be spending the nights in a small camper trailer when the temperature drops, so heating plugs and electricity are important. Always keep in mind that you will need a generator setup and heating systems as well.

Ceiling Height

This is one of the most important features to consider, but usually, it gets ignored by most travel trailer enthusiasts. If you're treating yourself with an RV or a travel trailer that comes with luxurious features such as a bathroom, then make sure your trailer is heightened enough that you can easily stand and move around in there. The aim is not to feel claustrophobic in your ride.

People Also Ask

A small travel trailer is meant to provide a comfortable and enjoyable trip with all the amenities. Whether you travel around the desert, mountains, and valleys, these trailers feel safe and protected from extreme weather conditions. Moving forward, we have answers to some of the frequently asked questions by people to ensure them a better experience.

Does a Bunkhouse Count as a Second Bedroom in a Travel Trailer?

Fortunately, the answer is “Yes it counts!” If you’re living in an RV full-time, you understand that every space counts in a big way!

And if you are a parent looking for ways to make the most of your kids’ bunkhouse room or if you use it as a spare room (or perhaps an office!) then you know how important a second bedroom is to your tiny living quarters.

Travel trailers with two bedrooms can also offer premium features such as a washer and dryer as well as two bathrooms, which we will discuss later.

Optional second-bedroom RVs offer so much versatility.  Whether you are an empty nester, need a spare bed for when company comes for a visit or you are a family with kids, a second bedroom in your camper trailer, which is oftentimes called a bunkhouse, may be the perfect option for you.

Let’s face it:  Many RVs can measure less than 300 square feet – so a second bedroom can really prove itself to be a valuable asset especially if you are living in it full-time or for an extended period.

Two-bedroom campers are the perfect solution when you need separate sleeping areas.  The two distinct spaces offer not only sleeping privacy but an alternate room for when you need a little “me” time.

With that said, two-bedroom RVs or bunkhouses are becoming increasingly popular.  If there is a particular feature you are looking for such as rear living or rear kitchen, your options may be limited or the availability at the RV dealership may be small.

If you are considering buying a Travel Trailer with 2 Bedrooms we highly recommend that you rent one first. You can rent a Travel Trailer for a week and learn everything you like and don’t like about it so when you are ready to buy you will know exactly what you want! We highly recommend checking out Outdoorsy to Find Two Bedroom Travel Trailer Rentals Near You!

10 Best Travel Trailers With Two Bedrooms For 2024

Welcome to our list of best travel trailers with two bedrooms! With that being said, these aren’t the only travel trailers out there with two bedrooms. This is simply a list of the ones we think are the cream of the crop.

The Grand Design Transcend 321BH is not just a quad-bunk set-up. Alone, that’s a great feature. However, there are also two bathrooms in this rig, and the advantages of that are many. This is especially true since the main bathroom is a walkthrough, and if the kids are using that bathroom, you might find yourself trapped on one end or the other.

As far as mobility, the dual-entry aluminum steps are a welcome feature. It helps to move about the travel trailer, even when both bathrooms are occupied. Don’t let the two-bedroom design fool you into thinking this rig lacks space either. It’s surprisingly spacious within, even more so than it looks from the exterior.

Our Pros and Cons

✅ Modular bunk room allows for a larger degree of arrangement creativity

⛔ Carpet in the slide and floor vents throughout

  • UVW:  6,884 lbs
  • Tongue Weight:  744 lbs
  • Length:  34.1′
  • GVWR:  9,500 lbs
  • CCC:  2,616 lbs

Two feet shorter than the number one spot, the Coachmen Cat alina sleeps three additional people! Now that’s a primary example of excellent space utilization. Some travel trailers with two bedrooms underwhelm when it comes to remaining, available space.

However, this rig embraces the ideal living conditions of a large family, in a smaller rig than some of the others on this list, without any notable sacrifices. There’s only one bathroom, but that’s not a bad deal either, especially since its large, spacious, and includes a bathtub.

3. Gulfstream Conquest 33DBDB

Gulfstream Conquest 33DBDB Exterior

✅ Tons of storage space in every room, from cabinets and wardrobes to hidden access

⛔ Vents in the floor throughout

  • UVW:  9,680 lbs
  • Tongue Weight:  1,160 lbs
  • Length:  40.6′
  • GVWR:  11,747 lbs
  • CCC:  2,067 lbs

The Gulfstream Conquest 33DBDB comes closer to the mobile home look than any of the other travel trailers out there that come with two bedrooms. Though the squared-off front cap may not be to everyone’s liking, the massive windows more than make up for it, with the perfect, panoramic view.

As big as it is, storage capacity is expected, and the Conquest doesn’t disappoint. It’s loaded with storage options throughout, a boon for large families, with a shade over a ton of cargo carrying capacity available. If you prefer size in your travel trailers, this one is right up your alley.

4. Cherokee Black Label 304BHBL

Cherokee Black Label 304BHBL Exterior Travel Trailers Two Bedrooms

✅ Full access to the entire rig, even with the sides in

⛔ Vents in the floor

  • UVW:  8,433 lbs
  • Tongue Weight:  943 lbs
  • Length:  37′ 3″
  • GVWR:  9,985 lbs
  • CCC:  1,152 lbs

The striking contrasts of the black, gray, and white interior aesthetics in the Cherokee Black Label 304BHBL , are just one part of a much greater whole.

Everything in the Black Label is designed with both space and size in mind. These include the dual-sink island in the galley, the double bunks opposite the single couch, and the large sofa perfectly positioned across from the TV.

If you have kids, one of the features you’ll appreciate is bathroom access while the slides are still in. Those tiny bladders often mean frequent stops on a long haul. There’s only a single entrance, but the exterior TV setup, outside cooking station, awning, and slide make up for the loss.

5. Cruiser Embrace EL32BH

Cruiser Embrace EL32BH Exterior

✅ Massive kitchen and bathroom space

⛔ TV is a “neck-wrecker” setup

  • UVW:  7,134 lbs
  • Tongue Weight:  1,016 lbs
  • Length:  36′ 6″
  • GVWR:  9,816 lbs
  • CCC:  2,682 lbs

What’s not to embrace about the Cruiser Embrace EL32BH ? Travel trailers with two bedrooms sometimes skimp on space to accommodate the design. However, the Embrace comes with a very large second bedroom, mostly thanks to the slide.

It allows for a large entertainment space with bunks on two sides and a convertible couch. It also includes an entertainment center so the kids can watch TV while you catch up on your shows out in the primary living area.

6. Winnebago Voyage 3538BR

Winnebago Voyage 3538BR Exterior

✅ The large shower and high ceiling are a plus for taller people

⛔ Outside of the island, counter space is a little limited

  • UVW:  9,582
  • Tongue Weight:  1,018 lbs
  • Length:  38′ 11″
  • GVWR:  11,000 lbs
  • CCC:  1,418 lbs

Just looking at the floorplan, a lot is going on with the Winnebago Voyage 3538BR . It’s not that complicated, however, as most of it is just optional design features. Regardless of what you choose to go with, the Voyage is an immensely spacious rig, with a high-ceiling shower that will make tall people so grateful.

It’s a single-bathroom setup, though the bathroom is private and not a part of the master bedroom. There are also storage options galore, and we always appreciate the entertainment center when it’s set up directly across from the sofa.

7. Open Range Light 321BHS

Open Range Light 321BHS Exterior Travel Trailers Two Bedrooms

✅ Bunks are incredibly spacious and no vents in the floor throughout this RV!

⛔ Toilet is kind of in a tight position, especially if you have long legs or knobby knees

  • UVW:  8,760 lbs
  • Tongue Weight:  1,000 lbs
  • Length:  37.7′
  • GVWR:  9,995 lbs
  • CCC:  1,325 lbs

From entry-level campers to travel trailers with two bedrooms, Open Range (or Highland Ridge under Jayco) is known for designing accessible RVs that are wide open for DIY projects or future repairs. The Open Range Light 321 BHS is no exception. Its simplicity is layered with robust features throughout.

From the fantastic entertainment center (directly across from the theater seating) to the spacious, dual-opposing bunk room, the 321BHS is clearly made for larger families on the move. Space isn’t just a luxury in the second bedroom either. It also applies to the master, with plenty of walk-around space and storage options.

8. East To West Della Terra 291BH

East To West Della Terra 291BH Exterior

✅ Multiple arrangement options in the bunk room

⛔Exterior kitchen is a little underwhelming

  • UVW:  8,328 lbs
  • Tongue Weight:  1,190 lbs
  • GVWR:
  • CCC:  1,662 lbs

One of the best travel trailers with two bedrooms on our list is the East To West Della Terra 291BH . If you’re traveling as a family, the heated and enclosed underbelly increases the time of the year you can travel and expands your journeys northward.

The king bed in the master bedroom is always a nice option, especially since there is still a little room to move about in there. Counter space is robust as well, with the L-shaped counters expanding your kitchen utilities a bit. There’s only one bathroom, but it’s spacious as well, including a large shower.

9. Palomino Puma 28BHSS2

Palomino Puma 28BHSS2 Exterior

✅ Large and spacious RV with accessible bathroom even with the slides in

⛔ Fuse panel is in the guest room; which potentially problematic with curious children

  • UVW:  7,574 lbs
  • Tongue Weight:  843 lbs
  • Length:  36′ 11″
  • GVWR:  9,063 lbs
  • CCC:  1,489 lbs

The Palomino Puma 38BHSS2 is one of the more straightforward options on our list of travel trailers with two bedrooms. There’s a queen in the back and a queen in the front. The sofa converts into another bed, in case you are entertaining guests and the kids are also along for the ride.

Sometimes, the best choice is often the most simple and this particular Palomino offers perfection in simplicity. Even the angled entertainment center is simple and highly effective, especially if you hate breaking your neck at an odd angle from the couch.

10. Jayco Jay Feather 29QBH

Jayco Jay Feather 29QBH Exterior

✅ Lightweight travel trailer that still maintains a ton of space, along with the two bedrooms

⛔ Plastic toilet (understandable given Jayco’s attempt to keep the weight down

  • UVW:  6,970 lbs
  • Tongue Weight:  785 lbs
  • Length:  36′ 1″
  • GVWR:  8,500 lbs
  • CCC:  1,530 lbs

As the name implies, the Jayco Jay Feather 29QB H is one of the lightest travel trailers with two bedrooms on our list. The entire point of the design is to keep things lightweight. While that means a plastic toilet instead of porcelain, it’s also the difference between a truck upgrade and sticking with what you have.

The interior is beautifully designed, with sharp contrasts that compliment, rather than jar against each other. The living space throughout is exceptional as well. As light as it is, it still supports double bunk beds and additional, flip-up bunks in the same room. Not bad for a Feather!

Are there Camper Trailers with Two Bedrooms and Two Bathrooms?

So if you are already thinking you need a two-bedroom camper trailer, this question may have crossed your mind too. Fortunately, the answer to this question is also yes, but they are a bit more tricky to find because of demand.

If you are on the hunt for a 2 Bedroom 2 Bath Travel Trailer, here are some models you might want to consider:

  • Coachmen RV Freedom Express Liberty Edition 326 BH DSLE
  • Keystone RV Outback Ultra Lite 301 UBH
  • Jayco White Hawk 32 BH
  • Highland Ridge RV Open Range OT338 BHS
  • Crossroads Sunset Trail SS331BH

Advantages of Travel Trailers with 2 Bedrooms

small travel trailers with 2 slides

What are some advantages in particular that make a two-bedroom travel trailer the best option?  Most of the two-bedroom RV floorplans have opposing slide-outs and bedrooms on opposite ends of the camper trailer.

Not only does this increase your living square footage, but it also gives you and the others in your camper trailer some additional privacy.

On top of that, many bunkhouse RVs come with extras like a built-in desk, additional storage, a second couch, fold-out tables, and enormous floor space in the spare bedroom for the children to play.

A two-bedroom travel trailer RV can be welcoming and comfortable for a family with two or more children. The floor plans and details in the RVs make this camper trailer option unmistakably great, and it is neat to see how they incorporate the extra space, privacy, and features into a two-bedroom.

Entertainment centers, bars, fireplaces, and even cozy outdoor kitchens can be viewed as big advantages when you have extra guests traveling with you. Some RVs come with a U-shaped dinette which offers additional seating and storage underneath usually.

Also, some may offer a double entry and access to the second bath from the outdoors.  This is particularly great if you have kids and do not want them to go in and out of the main camper area for the bathroom.

If you love cooking, then looking for a 2-bedroom travel trailer with an outdoor kitchen may be an important advantage. With the extra guests traveling with you, an extra cooking space may be the answer.

With an outdoor kitchen, you may get an additional refrigerator, pull-out cooktop, cabinets, ice maker, and even a sink!

The last advantage to a two-bedroom RV is a front master bedroom with a rear bunkhouse.  This is quite sought after in the RV world. Usually, the bunk room has its own entertainment center and storage up under a top bunk on the opposite side.  An extra bath near the bunk room area is just icing on the cake!

Many models will easily sleep four adults and four kids. With a queen master bed, converted dinette bed, and bunkhouse, these models can offer a diverse range of amenities and spaces such as these to meet your specific camping needs.

Disadvantages of Travel Trailers with 2 Bedrooms

When you first step into a two-bedroom travel trailer, the first thing you will notice is the smaller living and kitchen area. This is completely due to the fact the RV manufacturer had to steal some space from there to make the second bedroom.

Most RVers would say they do not like the decreased kitchen and living room areas at all, and it is the biggest disadvantage to a two-bedroom travel trailer.

Tight spaces mean little to no privacy.  If you are the type of person who likes quiet, being cooped up with other people in a small confined space may not be your best option. Of course, many believe confined spaces bring people together!

Usually, these floor plans come with a dinette booth which is dual purpose – can be used for eating as well as folding into another bed option. Of course, if you are the person having to sleep on a dinette fold-out bed, you will have zero privacy.

If you are a young child, however, which in most cases this would be who slept here, it may not be a big deal.

It’s not all bad, though!  Travel trailers offer so many affordable options for those wanting more than one bedroom. RVs with slide-outs greatly improve some of the cons. This can be a lifesaver when more than two people are living in a small space on those rainy

Are There Camper Trailers with Two Bedrooms and Two Bathrooms?

Final words about travel trailers with 2 bedrooms.

Travel trailers with two bedrooms are not as uncommon as you might think. In fact, with the improvements in technology (improving strength and lightening the weight loads), more and more of them are cropping up, here and there.

One thing is for sure, you won’t lack options when you start hunting down the best one for you and your family. This list is a fantastic starting point and includes some of the best the industry has to offer.

If you’re ready to take your family on the road, your adventure starts here!

Please help. We can’t seem to find the Travel Trailer floorplan we want. Any suggestions? *Two fixed adult beds, not fold outs, pull down, etc. Two twin beds are fine *Theater seats directly across from the Large Screen TV – not off to the side *No carpet *Full bathroom and the toilet isn’t sitting in front of the shower or sink *37 ft long or slightly shorter, not longer *Well built – excellent quality *Air Flow system – heating and cooling NOT directly above the beds *Model 2018 or newer Thanks, Denise

Nice assortment of different Travel Trailers, my favourite is not on your list, it is the 2020 Coachman Catalina LE 343 BHTS Travel Trailer

Thanks for sharing! Mike

The 15 Best Travel Trailers for 2024

Traveling doesn’t mean having to step foot in a frenzied airport. In fact, there’s never been a better time to go camping. With the right travel trailer, you can easily leave the city behind without having to deal with anyone other than your nearest and dearest. Today’s featured-packed luxury caravans are nothing like those you were ferried around in as a kid, either. Not only do they look good, but they’re packed with enough premium features that you’ll feel right at home, no matter where you are.

We’re also at the point where there’s a trailer for practically every kind of camper, regardless of what vehicle they drive (including the most notorious EV out there, the Tesla Cybertruck ). If you’re the kind of person who likes the classics, there are multiple aluminum-sided Airstream and Bowlus models to choose from. Want to bring as much of your home on the road with you? How about Living Vehicle or Land Ark’s mammoth condos on wheels? There are also caravans you can take off-road with your 4×4 and ultra-light and compact models you can tow with even a crossover SUV. Some can even be turned into a mobile office if you want to mix work and play. Below are 16 travel trailers that will allow you to take to the road in just about any way you can imagine.

A rear 3/4 view of the Living Vehicle HD24

If you want a better understanding of how far travel trailers have come over the decades, just look at the Living Vehicle lineup. The Santa Barbara-based company’s boxy trailers are basically mini apartments you can take with you on the road. Our favorite might be the new HD24, which is far from the company’s biggest offering, but comes with all the amenities you could need at the campground—and then some.

The all-electric model, which starts at $299,995, may measure only 24 feet, but its minimalist interior still has more than enough for a bedroom, kitchen, entertainment area, and a bathroom with a dedicated shower. One particularly clutch feature is a five-by-eight-foot multi-purpose space that can be used as an office, guest room, or laundry room. If that wasn’t enough, the top-of-the-line Pro variant has a solar-assisted power system that can keep the trailer running for up to a month off the grid.

The Living Vehicle HD24 entertainment area

Special Features:   —Trailer can be configured to include a laundry room, office, or guest room. —Interior has a clean minimalist look and comes packed with premium amenities. —Range-topping Pro version’s power system produces enough energy for 30 days of off-the-grid living,

The Bowlus Endless Highways Performance Edition from the side

It may not be the most famous shiny caravan maker—that would be Airstream—but Bowlus is the company that gave us the first riveted travel trailer. The company, which was revived in 2014, knows not to mess with a good thing, so its well-regarded trailers—like our favorite, the  Endless Highways Performance Edition —look just like those it produced in the 1930s, only bigger and with better materials (think: alclad aluminum for the exterior and birchwood for the interior).

Despite its classic look, the $225,000 trailer has all the conveniences you expect in 2022, including heat and air-conditioning systems, a WiFi modem and plenty of outlets for charging all your smart devices. Best of all, though, might be a lithium iron phosphate that gives you the ability to live off the grid for two peaceful weeks. If you’re an animal lover, there’s also the  Terra Firma , which features a bunch of Fido-friendly features like a built-in food bowl, pet bed and remote temperature control system.

Inside the Bowlus Volterra

Special Features:  —Thee’s a double-sided indoor galley and an outdoor cooking area with electric and propane outlets. —The hotel-style shower has teak flooring and seating. —Lithium iron phosphate power system can keep the entire trailer running for up to two weeks.

A front 3/4 view of the Mammoth Overland Extinction Level Event

Mammoth Overland’s latest model is a burly off-road trailer designed to withstand anything it encounters in nature. The appropriately named Extinction Level Event (ELE) rides on a set of chunky all-terrain tires and has an angular aluminum body reinforced with steel armor and skid plates. If that doesn’t sound like enough, you can upgrade to Level 3 bullet-proof armor. There’s also a built-in bear spray system too, for added security. The ELE, which starts at $67,000, is pretty compact since it’s a tear-drop trailer, but it can comfortably sleep two and has an integrated workstation inside its cabin. There’s also a swing-out kitchenette in the back for cooking.

The Mammoth Overland Extinction Level Event's swing-out kitchenette

Special Features:   —Comes with a built-in bear spray system and is available with bullet-proof armor. —Despite its compact size, the interior cabin still has room for a built-in workstation. —The swing-out kitchenette isn’t big, but has everything you need to cook a delicious meal.

Airstream Globetrotter

One brand leaps to mind when most of us think about travel trailers—Airstream. Its iconic aluminum-sided caravans have been instrumental in popularizing road trips and  camping  in the US for decades. One need only look at the company’s  Globetrotter  model to see why: In addition to looking beautiful, the silver-covered caravan is packed with creature comforts to keep you traveling comfortably. It’s not the brand’s largest model—that would be the flagship  Classic —but it’s available with one of six different floor plans, each of which has room for a spacious entertainment area (that can sleep up to four adults).

Inside you’ll find a full-featured kitchen, half-bathroom, shower and sizable bedroom with either a queen-sized bed or two twins. As you would expect from Airstream, the amenities are top-rate, too, like Franke faucets in the kitchen and bathroom, stainless steel appliances, Quietstream climate control system and multiple LG LED TVs. The Globetrotter starts at $120,000. If it doesn’t fit the bill, the brand has plenty of other models to choose from, including collaboration editions like the  extra-homey Pottery Barn Edition  or their  ultra-rare Supreme edition .

Airstream Globetrotter

Special Features: —There are different floor plans to choose from, each of which features a full kitchen, half bathroom and dedicated shower. —The Quietstream climate control system barely makes a peep, even when the heater or A/C is running. —A built-in canopy provides shade when you want to spend time outside.

The W2 Romotow T8

Good things come to those who wait. More than a decade after it was first announced, the Romotow T8 is finally available to order. The 30.5-foot caravan, which was designed by New Zealand-based architecture and design firm W2, has two main components—a fixed chassis and a smaller living space that fits just inside of it. When the $268,500 trailer is parked, the cabin slides out at the touch of a button and can be rotated 90 degrees like a swiveling USB stick. When rotated like this, the hydraulic-powered chassis can then be used as a patio. While this unique design may be the vehicle’s main selling point, its interior cabin comes with all the features you need and has enough room for six adults.

Inside the W2 Romotow T8

Special Features:   —Unique rotating design is unlike anything else currently on the trailer market. —The living area is large enough to sleep up to six adults. — Hydraulic patio comes with an integrated deck set.

Escapod Topo2

The  Escapod Topo2  is a trailer for anyone looking to take their camping trip off road with minimal fuss. The brand’s update of the classic teardrop trailer is an off-road-friendly model without any of the bulk. Unlike most of the trailers on this list, Escapod’s bedroom and kitchen area are separated from one another. The dedicated sleeping area has room for a queen-size mattress and is equipped with a stargazer window so you can really take in the peace and quiet of the great outdoors. The galley, meanwhile, is only accessible from outside the $39,500 trailer, but has ample counter space for meal prep and cooking. Both sections get their power from a VPR 4EVER lithium ion battery with some solar panels to help keep things running smoothly and efficiently.

Escapod Topo2

Special Features: —Exterior is made from a single-piece of composite fiberglass that is rugged and weather-resistant. —Laser-cut tube steel frame should last for years. —Bedroom’s stargazer window offers up a beautiful view of your surroundings.

The Retreat Caravan and OzXcorp's ERV Electric Camper

It was only a matter of time until the  electric revolution  made its way to the world of trailers and campers.  Retreat Caravan and OzXcorp’s ERV  is a rugged trailer that also happens to run entirely on battery power. Roof-mounted solar panels provide juice for a 14.3-kWh lithium battery that keeps the trailer’s many appliances running. And while the trailer is perfectly equipped for some off-road fun, thanks to a specially tuned suspension and all-terrain tires, it also packs all of the comforts of a luxe hotel room inside, including a bathroom, spacious seating area and master bedroom suite with a king-sized bed and closets. But the true highlight may be the $75,000 caravan’s full-size kitchen, which features an induction cooktop, fridge and washing machine. There’s also a Weber electric barbecue and slow cooker for making your meals outdoors.

The interior of the ERV electric cabin

Special Features: —Solar panels and 14.3-kWh battery power the trailer and let you go off grid. —A specially tuned suspension and large all-terrain tires let you go off-road. —The primary bedroom has enough room for a king-size bed and its own closets.

Eriba Touring 820

Are you looking for an aluminum-sided trailer that looks like more than just another Airstream or Bowlus’s rip-off? If so, the  Eriba Touring 820  might fit the bill. The company’s top-of-the-line caravan updates the classic silver bullet look with a retro-futuristic shape and details. Even more impressive, though, is the 27-foot-trailer’s interior. The company has packed it full of luxury amenities like a sizable, leather-covered lounge area (that can be converted into a bed), customizable mood lighting and a surprisingly fashionable bathroom. The true highlight, though, is a bedroom with a large panoramic window that offers up a gorgeous views of your surroundings. That’s good, too, since you might not actually want to leave the $88,500 trailer.

Eriba Touring 820

Special Features: —The kitchen has a mini wine cellar for keeping your best bottles at the ready. —The leather-upholstered entertainment area can be converted into an additional sleeping area at night. —Adjustable mood lighting will help you feel at home no matter where you are.

The Land Ark Drake

Almost more of a portable house than a trailer, the  Land Ark Drake  basically lets you take all the comforts of home on the road. The gigantic, yet stylish, two-level, 357-square-feet trailer can comfortably sleep seven adults. Stark and modern on the outside, the trailer features an equally clean white-washed pine and black metal decorated interior. Across its two floors, it has room for a full-sized kitchen, living room and bathroom (which includes a bathtub), along with two loft bedrooms and an office which can also be converted to a sleeping area. Its $139,000 starting price may sound a lot for a trailer, but for a two-story house on wheels it’s not that bad.

Inside the The Land Ark Drake

Special Features: —The two-level design means you have 357-square-feet of space. —Downstairs bathroom includes a tub for when you need to take a relaxing soak. —It has a primary bedroom and two loft-style sleeping areas.

A front 3/4 view of the Pebble Flow

There are plenty of EV-friendly travel trailers on the market at this point, but none are nicer to an electric powertrain than the Pebble Flow, which starts at $109,000. The futuristic vehicle is available with an optional propulsion that includes two electric motors—one situated on each wheel—to help make sure its 6,200-pound weight isn’t eating up all your battery-powered vehicle’s range. That’s far from the Flow’s only forward-thinking feature though. The trailer also comes with an “Instacamp” system that can be used to park the vehicle and set up camp (which includes leveling out the vehicle, deploying its staircase, and turning on the lights). The unique feature can also be triggered remotely via Pebble’s smartphone app.

Inside the Pebble Flow

Special Features:   —An optional propulsion system means it can even be towed by EVs. —Unique “Instacamp” system allows you to park the vehicle remotely via the company’s smartphone app. — Solar-assisted battery pack produces enough power for a week of off-the-grid living.

A rear 3/4 view of the Living Vehicle CyberTrailer being towed by a Tesla Cybertruck

Elon Musk has been promising camping accessories for the Tesla Cybertruck since the get-go, but any official camper shell or trailer is likely years away at this point. Fortunately, Living Vehicle, the maker of our current favorite caravan, has stepped in to fill the void. The company has just unveiled the CyberTrailer, a new model with a design inspired by the battery-powered pickup. The caravan is almost certainly the most striking entry on this list, for better or for worse, but it also has a solar-assisted power system that produces more than enough juice to keep the entire vehicle running off the grid. More importantly, for Cybertruck (and other EV) owners, it also allows the trailer to be used as a mobile charging station for any battery-powered vehicle or plug-in hybrid.

The Living Vehicle CyberTrailer from the front

Special Features: —A bold design inspired by Tesla’s pickup that also offers excellent aerodynamic performance. —A solar-assisted system that will keep the trailer and all its features running off-the-grid. —Can be towed by pickups and SUVs other than the Cybertruck, including other EVs.

Colorado Teardrops Boulder travel trailer

There are EV-friendly trailers and then there’s  Colorado Teardrops’s Boulder . Not only is the company’s latest designed to be towed by a battery-powered SUV or truck, it can also charge your EV’s battery. That ability comes courtesy a 75-kWh lithium-ion battery pack with a built-in DC fast charger that will give you some much needed peace of mind out on the open road. At the very least, it gives you the freedom to come up with a route centered around sights instead of charging stations. Aside from this very vital feature, the compact caravan has everything two adults and two children need to live off the grid for a for a few days, including a comfortable queen-sized mattress, two bunk beds (for the kids), an enclosed kitchenette and an optional climate control system. The $55,000 trailer also comes in a variety of two-tone color schemes that all look pretty sharp.

Colorado Teardrops Boulder travel trailer

A big trailer can be a godsend on the campground, especially if you’re traveling with family or friends. The problem, of course, is getting the hulking vehicle there. No matter how experienced the driver, maneuvering a large caravan can be very tricky. Luckily there are trailers like  Hunter Nature’s Raptor XC . The brand’s angular model looks compact but features a pull-out section that just about doubles the size of its interior. When it’s fully extended you’ll have more than enough room for a dedicated living area, kitchen and bedroom. This will come in handy if there’s more than two in your traveling party, too. That’s because the $44,000 trailer’s entertainment area can easily be converted into an additional sleeping area at night.

The Hunter Nature Raptor XC's main living area and slide-out bedroom

Special Features: —An expanding segment turns this trailer into a multi-room cabin. —The bedroom has a large skylight so you can see the stars at night. —A spacious lounge can be converted into an additional sleeping area if you need more room.

Best for Design Obsessives: X-Cabin300

The X-Cabin300 travel trailer

Silver trailers don’t all need to be bullet-shaped as nice as the classic Airstream may look. Just take a gander at the X-Cabin300. The all-aluminum vehicle has a boxy shape that looks both classic and modern. The Japanese-made caravan is compact, but comes with four different interior layouts designed to meet your varied needs (it can even be used as a food truck). The $50,000 trailer is smaller than most—it measures just seven feet tall, seven feet wide, and 15 feet long—and only tips the scales at 1,650 pounds, which means a compact SUV can even tow it.

X-Cabin300 travel trailer with a canopy attached

Special Features:   —A refreshing spin on the classic all-aluminum travel trailer. —Available with four different interior layouts. —Small and light enough to be towed by a compact SUV.

The exterior of the Taxa Mantis

It can be hard to find a trailer that fits everyone’s needs, but the  Taxa Mantis  comes close. Its no-nonsense design means it fits with nearly anyone’s style. Thanks to a pop-up roof section, ingenious use of space and plenty of storage compartments, the Mantis has all the room you and your friends and family need to camp in comfort, which can be crucial on longer trips. It’s also got all the necessary features, including a bathroom with a built-in shower, water heater, kitchenette and 8,000 BTU air conditioner. The trailer, which starts at $46,000, is ideal for off-roading, but there’s a  special Overland edition  if you want something even more rugged.

Inside the Taxa Outdoor Mantis 5.1 Overland

Special Features: —A pop-up roof means you don’t have to sleep in the kitchen if you don’t want to. —There’s a built-in water heater and climate control system with a 8,000 BTU air conditioner. —It comes with a built-in canopy for outdoor hangouts.

The exterior of the Happier Camper HC1

Imagine if you didn’t need a truck or SUV to tow your trailer. You don’t if the caravan in question is Happier Camper’s compact  HC1 . The Los Angeles-based outfit’s smallest model is as light as they come, with a dry weight of just 1,100 pounds, meaning it can be towed by practically any car, even a modern-day Mini Cooper. It features a semi-modular interior designed by Adaptiv that can be customized to fit your camping style—components snap in like Legos—with either a full kitchen or enough sleeping room for up to five people. You can even add solar panels if you want to go off the grid. The $34,450 trailer’s old-school design is also sure to stand out on practically any campground. Even better, no pickups needed.

Inside the Happier Camper HC1

Special Features: —At only 1,100 pounds, it can be towed by just about any car. —The semi-modular floor plan allows you to arrange the interior to accommodate your camping style. —The larger rear hatch opens up space when you are entertaining.

There was a time when you had to choose between comfort and off-roading chops when it came to pulling your adventure home along with you. You could spend a week in a luxury trailer as far as the pavement would take you, or sleep off-kilter in a Jeep pop-up camper deep in the wild. Now, whether you chase your motor-powered thrills at a gravel campground or 500 miles from the nearest interstate, your options are better than ever.

Our favorite slide-in, pop-up, and tow-behind equipment of the year keeps your storage space usable, maximizes sprawl—yes, there’s a short-bed camper that fits a king-sized mattress—and promises as much off-road prowess as you can dream of.

Tune Outdoor Tune M1

Best Minimalist Camper

Tune outdoor tune m1.

From $12,999 at Tune Outdoor

Type: Canopy-style popup truck camper Weight: From 387 lbs (short-bed Tacoma) Material: Aluminum/Composite

Pros and Cons ⊕ Incredible space-to-weight ratio ⊕ Sleek ⊕ Retains bed utility ⊗ Heavier than some wedge campers ⊗ Expensive

True innovation has been tough to come by in the lightweight, shell-style truck camper market lately, but that changed when Denver-based Tune Outdoors launched its Tune M1 in 2023.

Instead of releasing just another wedge camper or traditional slide-in, Tune combined some of the best existing features on the market, like building with aluminum extrusions and honeycomb composite panels, and added its own twist: The Tune M1 rests on a truck’s bed rails, but the side walls flare out at the bottom to provide far more interior living space than anything else out there. That extra width also provides more standard sleeping space—in fact, an optional bed extension platform accommodates a nearly king-sized mattress on a short-bed Tacoma.

The Tune M1’s starting price includes features that cost extra at many other brands, like built-in lighting, a 4-inch memory foam mattress, and 440-plus feet of T-Track. All that T-Track means you can bolt nearly anything to the camper, and easily build out the interior if you wish.

Bonus: Side awning panels fully open for gear access. Our favorite option is the tempered glass side panels, which not only look fantastic, but also let more light inside and allow for panoramic views. “The packed-down silhouette is so tight that we never held back on even the burliest roads,” says Aaron Gulley, a longtime Outside contributor and gear tester. “But it has so much popup space that the truck bed felt roomy for two people even with coolers, a generator, and requisite camping gear.”

The perfect cross between a fully featured slide-in and a wedge camper, the Tune M1 is ideal for families who need more space, or anyone who wants a truck camper but also wants to continue using their truck bed for truck things.

Adventure Wagon Modular Interior System

Most Versatile

Adventure wagon modular interior system.

From $16,000 at Adventure Wagon

Type: Van conversion kit

Pros and Cons ⊕ Modularity offers versatility ⊕ Great value ⊗ Fewer amenities than with permanent builds ⊗ Dim ceiling lights

Let’s get this out of the way upfront: camper vans are expensive. Fancy, extensive build-outs also render them fairly useless anytime they aren’t being camped in, which, for most folks, is the majority of the time. Enter Adventure Wagon and its modular interior system.

The company offers van conversions for Mercedes Sprinters and Ford Transits that start at just $16,000 and are completely modular, allowing you to switch your camper back to a cargo van in just a few minutes. You can convert the van yourself with the brand’s kit in 4-6 days, or have one of the company’s many installers do it for you.

The modular system also allowed our testers to easily add and take out rear seats, depending on who was using the van. “We love the Adventure Wagon setup so much because of how easy it is to reconfigure to suit the needs of a particular day, trip or activity,” said Corey Leavitt, a Santa Fe-based filmmaker and adventure rig enthusiast who’s rehabbed his truck camper. “I love that I can pull out the seats and bed platform, but leave in the battery and fridge for when I need to haul gear to a shoot, but also want to keep food and drinks on-hand for the crew.”

Boreas Campers EOS-12

Best Off-Road Trailer

Boreas campers eos-12.

From $84,000 at Boreas Campers

Type: 4-Season off-road travel trailer Material: Composite and metal construction Weight: 3,750 lbs (dry weight)

Pros and Cons ⊕ Incredibly capable off road ⊕ No-wood construction (no mold, rot, etc.) ⊕ 50-gallon fresh water capacity ⊗ Expensive ⊗ No indoor sink/cooking option

We’ve followed Pueblo, Colorado-based Boreas Campers closely since it debuted its AT and XT models, both class-leading off-road teardrops, a few years ago. The EOS-12 builds on the solid foundation of those campers and takes everything to a new level—literally.

The EOS-12 is a 20-foot, overland-style pop-up travel trailer built to go anywhere and keep you comfortable off-grid for extended periods of time in any weather conditions. Composite panel construction keeps the rig well insulated and light on its feet with a dry weight of 3,750 pounds.

The trailer features a slim canvas pop top that keeps it aerodynamic, a well-appointed outdoor kitchen, and a full indoor wet bath. With one queen-sized main bed and a dinette that folds out to about a twin sized bed, we found it could sleep three adults comfortably, and appreciated the copious amounts of storage inside.

The EOS-12 really shines when it comes to its mechanical and electrical features. It rides on a Cruisemaster XT—an independent trailing arm suspension with airbags and auto-level, capable of handling much rougher terrain than you’re likely to experience—540 amp hours of Battleborn lithium batteries, Victron electrical components, and 400 watts of solar panels.

Everything on this camper, from the exterior rock lights to the air compressor and the furnace, are operated by a portable Garmin O.N.E. tablet, which, despite our initial hesitation, performed flawlessly.

“We loved using the EOS-12 on a 5-day mule deer hunt,” says Eric Ladd, a mountain biker, hunter, skier, and all-around adventure seeking ER doc based in Santa Fe, NM. “We never worried about where we were towing it, it didn’t come close to running out of power or water, and we ate like kings thanks to the amazing outdoor kitchen—despite being off grid the entire time.”

Airstream Trade Wind

Best Luxury Rig

Airstream trade wind.

From $129,400 at Airstream

Type: Travel Trailer Material: Aluminum Weight: 6200 lbs (dry weight) Length: 25’ 2”

Pros and Cons ⊕ Fully off-grid power system ⊕ Gorgeous interior design ⊕ Roomy floor plan ⊗ Expensive ⊗ Not as off-road-capable as others

The reintroduction of the Trade Wind model shows that Airstream is listening to consumers. While the Basecamp models have been marketed towards younger generations looking to get a little further off the beaten path, the Trade Wind is the first of the company’s iconic, silver bullet-shaped travel trailers to come off the factory floor with everything a boondocker needs—and, as it turns out, everything our testers have added to their personal Airstreams.

It comes with a robust solar system, Battleborn lithium batteries, a 3-inch lift kit and all-terrain Goodyear Wrangler Workforce Tires. When you combine the system upgrades with a stellar floor plan that sleeps up to five, gorgeous interior design, and other smart features like a recirculating water heater, optional composting toilet, and an optional rear hatch that lets you easily load bulky gear, it all adds up to an incredible, luxurious, off-grid basecamp.

“We have owned an Airstream for nearly a decade and modified it for heavy, backcountry, boondocking use. The new Trade Wind is everything we always wanted ours to be—and much more,” said Gulley. “This is a rig built to go anywhere and do everything, and to do it in classic Airstream style. We definitely see an upgrade in our near future.”

How to Choose a Camper or Trailer

Buying a camper of any kind is a big investment, so it’s best if you can try one out or at least see one in-person before pulling the trigger. Visiting a dealer is great, but a lot of today’s best rigs are sold direct-to-consumer, which means that events like Overland Expo are a great way to see a camper up close.

Even better, try renting the type of rig that interests you on Outdoorsy to get a real feel for it. Even if they don’t have the specific model you’re looking for, you’ll get an idea of whether you’re a van, trailer, or truck camper person.

What Kind of Camper Should I Buy?

The short answer is, it depends. In general, we think most folks are better served by buying a tow-behind they can pull with their current vehicle. Trailers have more space than a van or truck camper could ever provide, and they don’t have engines, transmissions, and other expensive parts to maintain.

How Much Should I Expect to Spend?

For a new rig, you should budget anywhere from $100-250K for a van, $10-30K for a truck camper (sans truck), and $30-130K for a trailer, depending on your tastes and needs.

How Much Solar Do I Need?

It all depends on how much luxury you want off grid. For most weekenders, around 200-300 watts of solar and 100-200 amp hours of lithium batteries will be more than enough.

  • Number of testers: 6
  • Nights Spent Camping: Over 20
  • Number of campers/trailers tested: 6
  • Longest Stint Spent Off-Grid: 7 days
  • Most Challenging Test Drive: 23 miles of rugged, New Mexico washboard

Between attending overland expo shows to tour the latest rigs and testing demo trailers on extended trips, category manager Bryan Rogala spends over 30 nights camping in everything from rooftop tents to Airstreams every year.

Because evaluating adventure rigs isn’t as simple as testing a pair of running shoes, our testing criteria looks a bit different. We look at build quality, standard features and components, pricing, and availability, as well as details like trailer suspension and camper wall construction methods, in an effort to find a broad array of what we think are the most well-made and value-driven rigs on the market.

Bryan Rogala is a longtime contributor to Outside and has been reviewing trailers and campers since 2018. He covers overlanding gear and rigs in his regular column, and his 101 video series for Outside Online . As a hunter, mountain biker and skier, he’s in a constant search for the perfect adventure rig.

Aaron Gulley and Jen Judge, both former Outside contributors and gear testers, spent 3.5 years living full-time in their 2014 Airstream Flying Cloud 23FB. Their travels as cyclists, hikers and hunters have taken them and their Airstream all around the U.S., and provided serious insight into the world of travel trailers.

Corey Leavitt is a filmmaker, truck nerd, and adventure rig enthusiast. He’s filmed and helped produce all of Rogala’s 101 videos, rehabbed a truck camper, and spends more time on Craigslist seeking the next rig than anyone should.

Eric Ladd is a mountain biker, hunter, skier, and all-around adventure seeking ER Doc. He’s modified his own travel trailer for off road and off grid use, and takes his young family of four camping all over the Western U.S.
