Can Kids take a Giant’s Causeway tour from Dublin?

While young kids (under 2) can join some of the tours to the Giant’s Causeway there are some caveats. The journey times are long on the tour and as some tours last so long it’s not recommended or allowed to take kids under age 2 on the day trips. This obviously doesn’t apply if you are renting a car to visit the Giant’s Causeway, however, visitors will need to be happy with the journey time with young kids. If your kids (over aged 2) are ok with the journey times, they’ll love the Giant’s Causeway itself.

We leave Dublin and travel towards Northern Ireland, taking in the breathtaking views of rural Ireland along the way, including a picturesque drive through the Glens of Antrim and along the coast. On clear days enjoy views of Rathlin Island and perhaps the coastline of Scotland across the water. There will of course also be pauses for light refreshments along the way.

(UNESCO) Giant's Causeway

Travel in the footsteps of the Irish legend Finn McCool, who defeated the Scottish giant Benandonner all in the name of love as you cross his walkway at the Giant's Causeway, one of the greatest wonders of the natural world. The Causeway is formed from over 40,000 hexagonal basalt columns produced from volcanic activity over 60 million years ago. Here we will provide you with some time of your own (at least two hours) to explore the area and perhaps take in lunch to taste the local cuisine.

NB: Your driver will advise as regards lunch options, taking weather and local operational considerations into account on the day of your tour.

Giant's Causeweay Visitor Centre fee (GBP 15.00 / EUR 17.00) is included in the price of this tour

Belfast City

The afternoon we arrive in Northern Ireland’s capital, Belfast. Here, you will have the difficult choice between visiting Titanic Belfast, an award- winning exhibition in what was once the world’s leading shipyard OR a Black Taxi Tour around the city’s historic and political neighbourhoods.

A) TITANIC BELFAST This exhibition opened exactly 100 years after the tragic sinking of RMS Titanic in the very docklands where the ship was built. Through both original artifact and virtual reality exhibits, you’ll experience the epic efforts of some 40,000 people who worked on the ship’s creation and the tragedy that was her destruction.

B) BLACK TAXI TOUR Take a driven tour around the historically charged neighbourhoods of Belfast with their renowned political murals and visit the peace wall (a security fence dividing the housing estates of the British Unionists and Irish Nationalists). Quench your curiosity about the period of conflict in Irish history (1969-1998) known as the Troubles with your expert local taxi guide.

Our stop in Belfast will last approximately 2 hours and the entrance fee for either Titanic Belfast or the Black Taxi is included in the price of your ticket. NB: Unfortunately due to the distance and hours involved there is no time to enjoy both options.

Ireland in a Week (Summer 2024, 8 Days) Tour

Ireland in a Week (Summer 2024, 8 Days)

What people love about giants causeway tours.

Mike was an excellent guide, informative, very knowledgeable and flexible with the itinerary when necessary
This was a great tour and I'm so happy we did this. It gave us all of the highlights of Ireland so we wouldn't feel bad if we were never able to go back but left enough that if we did come back, we would know right where to go and what to do. I do have a few minor complaints but overall I do recommend the tour. First, the company is NOT good with communication. We emailed multiple times trying to get details about things like hotels or where we would be going on certain days or how to get signed up for optional excursions. Sometimes they would respond, sometimes not. And never with an actual answer. Don't expect to get any actual info until 5 days before the trip when you're assigned a tour guide (which to me, a planner, is INSANE). We couldn't even find out the starting hotel to stay near it. Which was another issue, the hotel in Dublin is so far away from everything, all the way on the south side of the city. Luckily it's on the train line but from that hotel to our additional hotel for our last night, it was an hour and a half of riding trains and buses. My second complaint is that we were not given enough time at many of the stops and not given the information we needed about the stops. For example, we stopped one day in Sligo and given an hour and a half for lunch. We just found out we were stopping in Sligo that day so we knew nothing about the town or what to do. We wandered around and all of the shops and restaurants weren't even open yet for lunch. I ended up having to get take away at the one bar we could find that was open and it was awful. Had we known where we were going ahead of time, we could have done some research and found what was open. Bunratty castle we were given an hour and a half to see things and eat. But then they tried to lead us on a tour that took almost an hour. We ended up walking out of the tour because Bunratty is a whole folk park village and it was amazing. Ultimately most people didn't even have time to eat. The same was true at Blarney. We were the first ones off the bus and power walked straight to the castle to get in line to kiss the stone. We were 5 minutes late getting back onto the bus and we did not a singular other thing on the Blarney Castle grounds. The tour guide told us there was a 4 story gift shop, we didn't even get to step foot in it. Most of the people didn't even get to go kiss the Blarney stone. Can you imagine, a whole trip to Ireland and having to make the choice not to see one of the most iconic things because we weren't given enough time? My last complaint is that there is no bathroom on the bus. Give or take if that was a good thing with some of the people on our trip, but I'm like a small child in that regard and some of the times we were driving were way too long. There was one place where we stopped for a photo op and I had to find some bushes, as did many of the men on the tour. Not a great experience having to do that but I simply could not wait another half hour to the next destination. Again, I do still recommend this tour but people deserve to know what they're getting themselves into. The tour guide was friendly and we all liked her. The driver was even better, Dermot - You're the BEST! And overall, a great introduction to Ireland.
Our guide Michelle was excellent. The city sightseeing tours on the bus were a waste of time. Our local tour guide in Edinburgh was awful. Why the laughing through most of her talking? Very irritating. The Fish & Chips dinner in the local dumpy restaurant was the worst meal of the trip. Otherwise just what we expected.

Dunluce Castle was built by the McQuillan family around 1500. It is located on the top of sheer-sided cliffs 100 feet above the ocean – the perfect location for one of the Great Houses of Westeros. • Katie Howard ★★★★★ 2 weeks ago Neil and Sarah were fantastic! If you are in Dublin and debating whether this tour is worth it I promise it is. Absolutely amazing. They give you nice long stops so you feel you can take in the area. Great history lessons while driving but also quiet time with music. The sheepdog demonstration was the icing on the cake. I want to come back again now to those areas as they were stunning!
  • Alexandra McDonald ★★★★★ a month ago What a fantastic and professional tour company! This Wild Rover tour from Dublin to the Cliffs was the perfect choice for my 7 year old and me. We were visiting Dublin for a long weekend and the Cliffs had been a bucket list item, and not stressing about driving was my main reason for booking. I reserved on their website directly (a fair price!) and went to the meeting point that day at 7am. They have … More large, comfortable coaches with their logo. The Cliffs are magnificent and a must-see! The driver Garry and our guide Rory were so professional and entertaining. Rory pointed out landmarks as we drove, gave us a comprehensive history of Ireland, and had such a lovely personality all day! We made a rest stop on the route there and back (no WC on the bus). We returned back at 7:30pm and it was such a great (albeit long) day. Furthermore, Rory came through the cabin as we were arriving back in Dublin to answer any personal questions we had about the area, and took a few minutes to recommend local restaurants, pubs, and experiences that we would find useful. Absolutely recommend!!
  • Theresa Langston ★★★★★ 3 weeks ago Our tour to Northern Ireland and the Giant Cliffs were amazing! Our tour guides Krishna and Barbara were so informative and friendly people. Barbara gave us a lot of Irish history and folklore. The Titanic museum in Belfast was so well done and sad too. The Giant Cliffs are amazing! The views are so beautiful. The countryside throughout Ireland is so green. I would recommend this tour to anyone visiting … More Ireland they were amazing tour guides. Thank you so much!
  • Ed Torres ★★★★★ a week ago This is the easiest and most stress free way to see some amazing sights in Ireland. We got to relax and let Wild Rover worry about the driving and details. Krishna and Brendan were absolute professionals and a joy to spend the day with. The bus was spotless and had USB charging ports at every seat. If I were to do this tour again, I'd pack a lunch to maximize my time at Giant's Causeway … More as the two food options there can get very busy.
  • Alana Steer ★★★★★ a week ago Our first tour with Wild Rover tours was a great success! We loved the scenic drive through the winding roads of the Wild Altantic Way along with the breathtaking views of the Cliffs of Moher and the liveliness of Galway City! Our driver, Lisa, did an amazing job travelling the tight narrow roads and our guide, Ciara, was very engaging, timely, friendly and funny. Would definitely book with Wild … More Rover again!
  • Bob Carey ★★★★ ☆ a month ago Our tour guide Barbara was great. She was very entertaining and informative. The Giants Causeway was beautiful and breathtaking. My only disappointment was the Black Cab tour. Our driver was not aware of our passengers, at one point we had to get back in the cab to go no more than 150 feet…. He presented the time of the Troubles from his perspective as a youth growing up. Otherwise, I highly recommend … More Wild River.
  • laura taylor ★★★★★ 4 weeks ago Truly the best and most enjoyable experience on our trip to Dublin. Liam and JP were exceptional in their knowledge of the regions visited and making everyone feel comfortable and welcomed. I wouldn't hesitate in booking another Wild Rover tour in Ireland again! Stop scrolling and simply book it!
  • Marine MALINGUE ★★★★★ 4 weeks ago Really nice experience I truly recommend it! Peter, our driver offered us a safe trip and Ian our guide was very nice and friendly, I particularly appreciated Glendalough and the sheperd demonstration which was a very good surprise! You can buy something to eat during your stop at Kilkenny and there are many opportunities to go to wasrooms during the excursion, everything is perfectly organise and … More you really have enough time at each place you visit! It definitely worth the price!
  • Rosemary ★★★★★ a month ago During our stay in Dublin we took two of Wild Rover's Tours. They were both extremely organized and the guides and drivers were all amazing. I can't say enough good things about these tours. They maximize the trip so you get the most out of your time. The guides were knowledgeable and entertaining. Both of our bus drivers were extremely safe drivers. The buses were clean, comfortable and … More had USB plugs easily accessible. Before we booked the tours we sent a few inquiry emails which were answered very promptly. Everything was amazing from start to finish. A bit about our Tours - The Cliffs of Moher, Atlantic Edge Ocean Walk & Galway (Rory was our tour guide & Brian was our Bus Driver) - This was SOOOOOOOO well worth it. The Cliffs were superb and you have 2 hours to explore them. The Atlantic Edge Ocean had amazing views and the countryside we drove through was picturesque. In Galway we walked to Merchant Row and had a lovely lunch at the Kings Head (this was one of the recommendations Rory gave us and it did not disappoint.) Rory was funny, charming and balanced our tour time with history, funny antidotes and was so helpful at every opportunity. Brian was a great driver and I felt completely safe in his care. Our second tour was - Giants Causeway & Belfast City Day (Barbara was our guide & John was our bus driver) - What a lovely day. If your a GoT fan, you will get to see several locations used in the show. You will have a choice to go to the Titanic Museum or the Black Cab Tours (I highly recommend the Taxi tours). The locations were amazing, the scenery was lovely and we had more than enough time at each of the locations. Barbara was fun and played a lot of music which certainly got us into the mood at each place we went to. She answered a lot of questions and John even spoke Gaelic for us! He was a great and safe driver.

Your journey at a glance

Departs belfast cruise ship terminal.

08:00 (or 30 minutes after docking for later arrivals). Your tour starts in style as you climb aboard a luxury small group van. Meet & greet with your driver and fellow passengers. Together we'll make our way inland through the beautiful Glens of Antrim.

Northern Ireland coastal drive

Our journey to Giant's Causeway takes us along the Causeway Coast, an area of outstanding beauty and characterized by cliffs overlooking white sandy beaches, world famous golf courses and on clear days – views of Scotland across the water.

Giant's Causeway

The highlight of the day is undoubtedly Giant's Causeway. 40,000 columns of hexagonal rock cascade spectacularly from the cliffs to the sea where they disappear before resurfacing on a Scottish island. In recent decades scientists have found that the structures were formed by volcanos some 60 million years ago. Although, we prefer the story of how the causeway was built in ancient times by the mythological giant Finn McCool. Join us on tour to learn the full story from locals in the know! You'll have ample time to explore this World Heritage Site with shuttle buses available for those who prefer not to walk up the steep slope to the Causeway (small charge payable locally). NB: Your (small group) ticket includes the £8 entrance fee for the Giants Causeway Visitor Centre (lunch may be had at the Visitor Centre or in a number of different towns depending on our departure time from the boat).

Dunluce Castle (photo stop)

Before we turn for Belfast, we'll stop at the nearby Dunluce Castle. Due to time constraints there is only time for photos at the spectacular ruins but you'll have time to ramble around and get some great shots of the fortress crumbling from the cliffs into the Atlantic below. Ask your driver about the tragedy that befell the castle in the 1600s when the cliffside collapsed during a banquet and took many of the kitchen staff with it.

Belfast City

This afternoon we'll return to Belfast well before the boat departs. Enjoy a sightseeing tour of Northern Ireland's premier city with highlights including Queen's University, Victorian City Hall, Prince Albert Memorial Clock, St. Anne's Cathedral and river Lagan. If your departure time allows you'll have time for extended sightseeing and shopping. NB: If your ship is leaving relatively early we will have to alter the itinerary to get everyone back on time.

Return to cruise ship

Normally cruise ships depart Belfast late- evening. If this is the case, you can expect to return to the boat after approximately 7 hours on tour. If the boat is leaving earlier we will amend the itinerary as necessary.
