The complete guide to Skandagiri Trek

Of the “Panchagiris” (Nandi Giri, Channagiri , Skandagiri, Brahmagiri and Hema Giri), or five hills of Chikballapur district, trek to Skandagiri is one of the prominent ones.

Skandagiri is located in a village called Kalavara Halli, and hence it is also known as Kalavara Durga. At the foothills of Skandagiri lies one of Karnataka’s ancient and oldest mutts, the Papagni Mutt.

The trail starts from Papagni Mutt and follows its way to the top, where lie the ruins of a fort which dates back to the 18th Century. Tipu Sultan conquered the fort which belonged to a local ruler and later he used it as a stronghold to fight against the British, but was eventually surrendered in 1791 when Tipu Sultan was defeated.

The top offers a panoramic view of the four neighbouring ‘Giris’ or hills and it is a sight to behold.

Skandagiri is located less than 60 km from Bengaluru and just 3 km from Chikballapur and is well connected by road and railways. Therefore, it is an ideal year-round trek for first-time trekkers as well as the seasoned ones and can be completed in 5 hours comfortably (2 hours to ascend and 2 hours to descend, with an hour’s break at the summit).

The trail originates from Papagni Mutt, in the Kalavara village. The village is 3 km from Chikballapur.

The trek itself can be divided into three sections - the first stretch is a flat trail walk from Papagni Mutt till the Forest Checkpost where one needs to report before starting the trek. The second stretch climbs up gently and sometimes steeply through dirt trails and rocky sections to the first rest point. The final stretch is a steep ascent to the summit on slippery muddy and rocky terrain.

The final section of the trek starts to get tricky with steeper ascents than the previous sections. If there are chances of injuring yourself on Skandagiri trek, it is on this section.

Make sure to wear sports or running shoes on this trek which have a good grip on slippery mud surfaces. Trekking shoes with hard soles do not provide good grip on slippery sections.

Our Trek Leader, Tanmay Bain says:

"I do not wear proper trekking shoes for any of my treks in and around Bangalore as they are not suitable for this kind of terrain. So, I only wear sports shoes which are much comfortable and provide excellent traction. "

After about 20 minutes of ascent, you will come across ruins of the fort for the first time. There are fort walls, abandoned pillars of what seems to be like a hut, some rock slabs with writings on them… These ruins make us wonder how life would have been sustained here in the 18th century!

Traverse your way up by crossing a few narrow sections. Be very careful here, as a slight misstep to your left will lead to a straight 100-foot drop down below.

Make sure to spend at least 30 mins on the top, exploring the ancient temples, taking in 360° view of the surrounding hills and reflecting on your journey till the top and do not forget to have your packed lunch or snack!

Try to be quiet and close your eyes for five minutes. Observe the sounds of nature and feel your body getting comfortable and relaxed, preparing itself to descend down the same way you came up. It is a beautiful way to spend time at the summit.

The descent is down the same path. However, you may face new challenges here as it requires a lot of caution to be applied while descending, as you will slip and slide easily on the steep sections if you do not take it slow and place your feet firmly on the ground with proper grip. The mud is loose and slides as soon as you place your foot on it.

Another challenge is, the chances of missing the right path are more while descending. The way markers are not easily visible and you may end up losing your way.

But, do not worry. If you follow the prominent trail you will reach the base without getting lost.

Skandagiri is one of those treks that can be done all year round .

However, due to very little tree cover on the trail, we recommend you wear a cap during summers to avoid exposure to the sun. No wearing a cap or a hat will tire you quickly due to dehydration caused by extreme heat.

During monsoons, carry a poncho or a raincoat along with a rain cover for your backpack to keep yourselves dry on your hike to Skandagiri.

But, we advice not to trek during heavy rain as the trail becomes slippery due to loose rocks and mud. This will hamper your experience of the trek.

Skandagiri is an easy trek. There are no sections on the Skandagiri trek that can be classified as difficult as such. However, a trekker must always anticipate and prepare for every eventuality.

Here are a few things you should keep an eye out for while ascending and descending:

• Slippery trail (Monsoon specific):

The trail becomes more tricky during monsoons as the mud and rocks become very slippery and great caution must be taken while traversing. If  trekking in the monsoons, trekkers should be very careful with their choice of footwear and should check weather charts so as to avoid days with anticipated heavy rains.

• Rocks and Stones:

There are multiple parts of the trek where trekkers will be required to scale small rocks or walk on large stone slabs. While this is an extremely enjoyable part of the trek, one needs to be careful. Slipping or falling from a rock can lead to serious injury and trekkers must exercise caution while navigating these sections.

• Muddy sections:

Since this trail is a mix of rocks and mud, there are some sections of predominantly mud trail which is very slippery even if it has not rained. Chances of slipping and sliding down for a few metres are high in these sections. Hence, firm footing is advised in these sections.

The Skandagiri trek is classified as an Easy grade trek. From Papagni Mutt, you will gain approximately 1,200 feet in altitude. Though the altitude gain is not much, the continuous ascent can be quite demanding for people who lead a sedentary lifestyle.

Training yourself for a low altitude easy grade trek

Here’s a guide to help you get fit for the trek in 4 weeks:

Cardiovascular Endurance

In case you’re just starting with a fitness routine, start slow and increase your pace everyday in the following manner –

  • Target completing a jog of 5 km in 45 minutes when you begin.
  • Gradually increase your pace by running 5 km, 4 times a week.
  • As you become more comfortable, introduce another day of running in your routine.
  • Progressively increase the distance you run in a workout until you can complete 5 km in 40 mins.

If you prefer cycling over running, target covering 15 km in 60 minutes when you begin.

  • Progressively increase your pace to cover 18 km in one hour.

Strength Training

This is an important area you need to work on.

Strength training is equally important to trek comfortably. Work on your glutes, calves and knees. Additionally, work on strengthening your core.

You must strengthen your core muscles. For strengthening your core muscles, holding a plank and it’s variations (elbow, side planks) are the best exercises to go about doing it.

Also, try these exercises for strength:

Target 4 sets of squats with 20 in each set.

– Squats (Mix it up with sumo squats)

– Lunges (Forward, backward and lateral lunges)

Flexibility

Flexibility determines the amount of movement your bones can make in any direction around joints such as shoulders, elbows, hips and knees.

It is an aspect that will help you trek comfortably. Carrying a backpack, however light, can become a strain. Stretching your hamstrings, quadriceps, hip flexors and lower back muscles regularly, promotes relaxation in the tissues reducing the strain on your back.

If you can’t go out and jog because of time and space constraints, here’s a video you can use to work out indoors.

Best places to visit near skandagiri trek.

There’s a majestic rock formation overlooking Nandi Giri which has been admired by renowned personalities like Jawaharlal Nehru and Sir M. Visveswaraya during British Rule. As a traveler, I loved the unique trail that offered a delightful mix of rocks, boulders, and mud, surrounded by thick vegetation. It’s amazing to find such a trek so close to the city!

As you get closer to the summit, you’ll be captivated by the dilapidated fort walls, carved pillars, and stones that transport you back to the 18th century when Skandagiri Fort was alive with grandeur. Reaching the summit, you’ll be pleasantly surprised by the intact Shiva Temple, still worshipped by devotees who climb all the way up. It’s a rare sight for a fort with surrounding ruins.

The summit rewards you with breathtaking views of the surrounding hills, forests, villages, and even Chikballapur town. After completing the Skandagiri Trek, you can explore nearby attractions like Nandi Hill, Muddenahalli (birthplace of Sir M. Visvesvaraya), and Bhoga Nandeeshwara Temple, an ancient Hindu temple complex with intricately carved pillars and a reflecting pool. Trust me, this adventure is one you won’t want to miss!

What is the best time to visit Skandagiri Trek

The best time to hike Skandagiri is from September to February, when the weather is more pleasant and the views are at their peak.

Skandagiri is a fantastic trek that can be enjoyed throughout most of the year. If you’re hiking during the summer, don’t forget to wear a cap to avoid dehydration from the sun’s heat.

For monsoon treks, bring a poncho, raincoat, and backpack rain cover to stay dry, but be cautious during heavy rain, as the trail can become slippery and challenging due to loose rocks and mud.

Although trekking between February and May is possible, the scenery may not be as breathtaking as in winter. Monsoon season is generally not recommended, as South India’s long rainy periods make the trail slippery and increase the risk of injury.

Trust me, trekking Skandagiri during the right season is an experience you won’t want to miss!

How to reach the starting point of the trek?

Reaching the Skandagiri Trek base location is a breeze, even if you haven’t selected transfers.

By Air: From Kempegowda International Airport Bengaluru, it’s just a 50-minute drive (43.7 km)

By Train: From Nandi Halt railway station, it’s a mere 25-minute drive (16.9 km).

By Bus: You can hop on a bus from Majestic Bus Station, Bengaluru, as there are buses running every 10 minutes to Chikballapur and vice versa.

By Own Vehicle: The Mylappanahalli Bus Stop is only 14 minutes away (7.8 km) by car or cab. If you’re coming from Bangalore City Center, it’s approximately 67.2 km away, and you can get there in around 1 hour 22 minutes via car or cab.

Availability of accommodations and food near the trek

When it comes to food during your Skandagiri adventure, Nandi grama, at the base of Nandi Hills, offers a few small eateries for a quick bite. For more dining options, head to Chikballapur, where you’ll find a variety of decent restaurants. Staying hydrated is essential, and you can find water at the trek’s base, Papagni Mutt, where a small groundwater tank provides a reliable source.

Accommodation:

As it is a one-day trek, there is no need to stay near the base. As per your convenience, ou can book good hotels in Chikballapur as well as Bangalore (because it isn’t that far) and travel from there.

The Difficulty level of the Skandagiri Trek

Skandagiri is an accessible trek for most adventurers, with no sections that are particularly difficult. However, it’s essential to be prepared for various trail conditions and exercise caution throughout the trek. During the monsoons, the trail can become slippery, making proper footwear crucial and checking weather forecasts to avoid heavy rain days advisable.

While scaling small rocks or walking on large stone slabs can be an enjoyable part of the trek, be careful not to slip or fall, as it could result in injuries. Additionally, some sections of the trail consist predominantly of muddy terrain, which can be slippery even without rain. Ensure you maintain firm footing in these areas to avoid slipping and sliding down the trail. With the right preparation and caution, you’ll have an incredible and safe time exploring the Skandagiri trek!

  • Post-monsoon (September to November): This is regarded as one of the best seasons in Skandagiri for trekking. The terrain is usually verdant after the monsoon rains have subsided. Because of the comparatively cool weather, the walk is enjoyable without being uncomfortable from the intense heat.
  • Winter (December to February): Trekking the Skandagiri is also advantageous during the winter months. The daytime temperatures are comfortable, and the weather is cool. It can get chilly in the mornings and evenings, so hikers should pack layers. Wintertime clear skies offer superb visibility and make for some of the most beautiful sunrise views from the summit.
  • Pre-Monsoon (March to May): Trekking is still possible during these months, but be prepared for rising temperatures and possibly dry weather. It's best to begin the walk early in the morning to beat the heat of the day.

You will be able to witness the sky changing colors during the sunrise and it is a wonderful sight to behold. It gets quite sunny after the sunrise, and the view from the hilltop is mesmerizing.

Skandagiri Hill Sunrise

Skandagiri Temple

Once the sunrise, you can explore the hilltop. There are ruins of the Skandagiri temple dedicated to Lord Siva here and it is a regular photo spot for trekkers. Even though at a crumbled state, it a treat to behold after the rigorous climb.

Tipu Sultan Fort

Built by Tippu Sultan, the ruins of this fort clearly indicate that the fort was once an elaborate structure. Though only a few walls remain standing, it adds to the mysterious aura of the place. Exploring these ruins deeper reveals the presence of two caves and 6 samadhis inside the structure.

Back to base camp

The trek back down is the same way, even though it may feel like an entirely new place in the sunlight. The drop is quite steep and it might feel more difficult to descent than it was to climb. Take care on each step as you may easily slip down the rocks. The endpoint will be where you began the trek, the Papagni Temple. Note that the guides may not accompany you on the way back. Most travel agents provide pick up and drop, so you will be given time to meet up at the starting point.

Skandagiri : A Hike To The Other Side Of The Fear #BestOfTravel

Sunset at Skandagiri

Photo of Skandagiri : A Hike To The Other Side Of The Fear #BestOfTravel by Trablogger

Hiking up a small mountain all alone and camping at the top of it, at night all by oneself might not be a big deal for many, but it was a big deal, at least for me.

It was on dull Thursday evening, I'd decided to go to Skandagiri , all alone.

I was looking for a better ending for my first book. I wanted to feel the inner conflicts, my hero would have felt while attempting to jump-start the bigger vision in his life. So I decided to do this trip.

Central Railway Station

It was a journey to tackle one of my primal fears, head on. On that particular Friday, from the seclusion of my temporary abode in Bangalore, I'd decided to take a train to Chikballapur, to the nearest train station to Skandagiri.

I was so excited and pumped up during the night before. But as the day came, I was full of anxieties, thinking of the big task at hand. Internet was full of warnings against trekking at Skandagiri. The day and night trek were banned and breaking the law could mean three months in prison!

Photo of Central Railway Station, Railway Station Road, Platinum City, Kempegowda, Majestic, Bangalore, Karnataka, India by Trablogger

My mind was pushing me to stay in the comforts of my bed and not to venture out in the dangerous world outside! The usual comfort zone dilemma just before any major travel plans, probably!

Finally I pushed myself out of the bed and decided to take that tough first step. After all what I wanted was to understand the inner conflicts of my hero.

Somehow I made it till the busy Bangalore traffic to get to my train. A part of my mind was happy that Bangalore traffic was always stagnant. There was always a chance that I might miss the train and I could cancel my plan. But the other part of the mind was anxious about missing the train.

The snail that Bangalore traffic was finally helped me to reach the train station and I hadn't missed the train yet. So the plan was still on!

Photo of Skandagiri : A Hike To The Other Side Of The Fear #BestOfTravel by Trablogger

A bit more than a couple of hours of slow train journey took me to this modest looking Chik Ballapur railway station which sort of reminded me of Malgudi days.

Chik Ballapur

I was expecting a Malgudy days sort of small village from the descriptions that I'd read from the internet. But it was a busy small town contrary to my imagination. People also looked quite harmless. I was expecting thugs who would stop me and harass me for doing the trek. I was also expecting some police men who would question me for doing this banned trek!

I didn't want to take a chance. So I relied only on my google maps to find my way around to the base of the mountain. Usually I ask around to find my way, but what if someone told me that this trek was banned?! At least all the internet information said so. I was anxious but I kept walking.

It was around 4 to 5km walk from the railway station. I ate some pre-trek meals from a local shop on the way, bought some supplies for the night stay and started to walk towards my point of interest.

Photo of Chik Ballapur, Chikkaballapura, Karnataka, India by Trablogger

Papagni Mutt

Sun was going to be at it's top performance soon. Under that heat, I was timidly walking and hoping that no one would see me going towards the mountain. After walking past a herd of goats, small houses and dry fields, I found the temple which was mentioned in one of the posts as the starting point of Skandagiri trek. The temple was called Papagni Mutt.

Photo of Papagni Mutt, Karnataka, India by Trablogger

I felt, it was my lucky day as no one had stopped me or questioned me till then. Then started the task of finding the starting point of the trekking trail. Google wasn't very helpful at this point. So I had to play a little bit of Sherlock Holmes, to find that first feebly visible arrow mark which was scribed on a boulder with a granite piece along with some other Kannada scripts.

Following someone else's path is the easiest thing to do when it comes to decision making rather than making your own path! So I just followed that arrow. Stepping on the the loosely bound granite rocks of various sizes on the solid red soil, I started my Skandagiri trekking.

Photo of Skandagiri : A Hike To The Other Side Of The Fear #BestOfTravel by Trablogger

Skandagiri Hills

The low dry green bushes didn't help me from the harsh sunlight of the midday sun. But I was happy, no one had stopped me and no one was going to stop me thereafter as I couldn't find anyone anywhere.

Almost half an hour into the hike, I saw the outline of a fortress! I was happy again and felt quite proud about myself! I thought I kind of did it way too fast. I couldn't understand why people said it took them hours to reach the top; until I reached that point.

When I reached the outline of the fortress, I could see another fortress above at a higher level. It reminded me of what I had previously read about the trek. There are a series of fort walls that leads to a very old temple at the top. Actually I hadn't reached the top. In fact I hadn't even reached half of the whole way!

Photo of Skandagiri Hills, Karnataka by Trablogger

I decided to leave the regular trail and take a shortcut keeping the next fort wall in sight. I evaded the thick bushes and big boulders on the way to reach the bottom of one of the next nearest fort walls. If I had walked on the regular trail, it would have taken much lesser energy. More than that, there was no way to reach the top other than climbing the granite wall which turned out to be quite risky.

Since I was all alone and didn't want to get injured, I walked all the way back and got back to the regular trail. It is good to make your own way, but it is not very advisable to think that you're smarter than the hundreds of people who had already made the path! I understood that there are no shortcuts in life to get to the top and the same is true in hiking too.

Without much commendable events, by following the easily visible trail, I reached the top after around three hours. There it was, a dilapidated temple made with erecting and stacking granite slabs and plastered on the top with mud and red soil. There were grass growing on the top of the temple on the hard soil. The look of the temple had the authenticity of more than a hundred years!

Photo of Skandagiri : A Hike To The Other Side Of The Fear #BestOfTravel by Trablogger

There I was sitting at the top of the mountain looking at the villages and towns down below on one side and Nandhi hills on another side, conversing with the nature and to myself. Then I heard a real conversation and it was approaching towards me.

I turned around and looked. I saw two guys coming towards the top from the other side of the mountain. Within no time they saw me as well. I was anxious again. Those were the local people. But I decided to sit confidently.

With a bit of surprise on their face, they asked, " What are you doing here? Are you alone?"

"Yes, I am alone. I came here to camp at night" I answered.

"But you don't have any camping equipment"

"I'll sleep inside this temple" I said pointing to the temple.

"Isn't it safe?" I asked after a bit of pause.

"Well, yea its safe. Just be careful about the wild animals at night". They carelessly tossed the idea of wild animals into my mind.

I couldn't hide my fear at that moment, as a reflex I dropped my guard and asked "Wild animals?! What kind of animals?!"

Again, carelessly they said, "Maybe foxes. But don't you worry. Just make some fire and they won't disturb you".

"Are you guys gonna stay here for the night as well", with a bit of hope I asked.

Pointing to the village down below they said,"No, We are going back there now. Good luck with your stay"

And they left, just like that!

Photo of Skandagiri : A Hike To The Other Side Of The Fear #BestOfTravel by Trablogger

Maybe they said that just to make me nervous. Or maybe there can be foxes. Maybe they lied, I didn't remember reading anything about any animals. Maybe they are right, they are the local people!

My thoughts started to mess me up. Just like my mind, the sky also started to become cloudy! When I was about to think whether it was some sort of Bollywood movie to see the clouds all of a sudden to match your emotions, I realized that I didn't have much time to gather dry wood and leaves to make fire at night. I ran around to collect whatever was dry before the rain and I was feeling the fear and pressure of staying in a remote place all alone.

Photo of Skandagiri : A Hike To The Other Side Of The Fear #BestOfTravel by Trablogger

Fortunately it didn't rain. By then I had collected the resources I needed to stay there for the night. I knew it was my thoughts messing me up. The fear wasn't real. The solitude at the mountain gave me time to rewind the whole event of that day.

It was my thoughts that created all these anxiety so far. I was anxious all the way thinking if someone would stop me or harass me. That anxiety was a result of my thoughts generated from baseless information on the internet. Nothing happened as I had feared. So I finally understood that the fear is fake but threat can be real. I had a choice to be fearful over my thoughts or to brush it off till something really happened. I could have prepared for a threat, but I shouldn't have feared because of my own thoughts.

While I was enjoying my newly found realization, the Sun came out from behind one of those clouds and showered a beautiful golden orange light on me. That was a beauty to witness. I felt that I had earned that spectacular view on that day! I sat there soaking in the beautiful light and on my better thoughts.

Photo of Skandagiri : A Hike To The Other Side Of The Fear #BestOfTravel by Trablogger

Time went by and the Sun had signed off from its day job. Slowly it was getting darker. The darkness had started putting everything I was seeing into the realm of unknown. After some time, each and every movement of the plants and trees around me felt like strange animals moving around. Each time a heavy wind blew shaking the branches hard, I felt there was some wild animals ready to jump on me.

My own thoughts had started creating the fear of the unknown again. I knew that it was nothing, but there were moments I didn't want to believe that. I was about to forget the presence of wild animals those people had mentioned earlier. Maybe monks would have been able to control their thought, but I wasn't able to do that.

To give a bit of relief, the half moon had come out from behind the clouds and lit up the place. At that point I was able to look at the valley and appreciate the beautiful view it had offered. The light-bulbs were switched on all across the valley. It looked like the reflection of the star studded sky on the valley, just the difference being they were bigger and closer than the stars.

Photo of Skandagiri : A Hike To The Other Side Of The Fear #BestOfTravel by Trablogger

With those views calming me down, I took out the biscuits and bananas I bought for my mountain dinner. I ate them sitting under the stars. But the surroundings were getting cold. The frequent winds made it colder. Interestingly I hadn't brought any warm clothing. All I had was a couple of T shirts, a news paper, a matchbox, water and the dinner items.

Photo of Skandagiri : A Hike To The Other Side Of The Fear #BestOfTravel by Trablogger

As the cold wind was accompanied by a drizzle, I had to get inside my only shelter, the temple. As I went inside the temple, the drizzle became a rain. I thought of making some fire inside the temple to keep me warm. But when the smoke filled up the entire room making it difficult for me to stay inside, that plan was failed miserably. I put out the fire.

I'd noticed that the hour hand of the watch was very reluctant to move after it became dark. I was beginning to think that it was some sort of strange phenomenon.

I decided to try and sleep. I took a few sheets of news paper that was left after trying to make the fire. I laid it down to make my bed. The solid red soiled ground was cold. The news paper didn't make much difference, but at least my clothes wouldn't get dirty. I put on all the T shirts I had brought. Then I put my legs inside my small backpack. And I tried hard to sleep.

I don't think if anyone had ever succeeded to sleep after deliberately forcing themselves to sleep. In short, I couldn't sleep. My newspaper bed saw me turning from one side to the other all the time.

I fell asleep when exhaustion took over everything. But that didn't last more than a minute. Those strange noises made by the wind by passing through the trees kept me awake. On and off I was falling asleep and waking up suddenly.

Finally at some point I really fell asleep. Sensing some movement at the door step of the temple, I woke up. I was sure I saw something at the entrance which was in fact a couple of meters away from me. I reached out to the long stick I had kept for any emergency. I knew it wouldn't be of much of a help during emergency, but I still kept it. Just like I had the LED torch light which I had bought on the roadside for 20 rupees.

When I looked at the time, it was already 5 in the morning. I was surprised and relieved at the same time. I had spend most of the night already! After seeing the sunrise, I could leave the mountain in one piece and alive! But before that I needed to check what I had just saw at the door step. Could it be a fox?

I went out with the torch light that could show hardly two meters and my personal weapon, the long stick. I saw something jumping out from the bush and running away after seeing me. I followed it and it was a dog. The dog was running towards a group of people who were climbing up the hill. Probably some Bangalore Techies coming for a weekend Sunrise trek!

Soon I could hear them well. One of those guys had actually spotted me as well. In a few seconds, they were all waving at me. When you are in a group, you won't really think of a dangerous mountain man that can actually attack them. So when they finally reached the top, we all greeted each other peacefully.

They had a bunch of questions and they started to fire them away.

"Hey bro when did you come? Where are others? Do you know what time is the sunrise?" It came from different sources.

I replied calmly, "I came yesterday evening, I am alone, I dont know the exact time of sunrise, it can be any time soon"

When they heard I was there from the other day itself all alone, they appeared to be surprised, which was the exact emotion I was also expecting from them.

"You must be really brave bro, to camp here all night, all alone", they started commenting and I was feeling quite proud about myself. But at the same time, I was laughing on the inside thinking about my own inner conflicts which I was having during the night. I was glad that they were unaware how afraid I was, the whole night.

I took full advantage of the opportunity and started giving them the speech on living outside of comfort zone, following one's passion, the importance of adventure in life and what not!

"Everyone feels fear. But you have to do things that you are afraid of. Then only you will grow. Then only you will conquer your fear and achieve success..", My speech went on like that.

Their amazement turned into respect and they were all wanted group selfies and pictures with me. I enjoyed my hard earned small time celebrity status.

Afterwards we all took the sunrise pictures.

Photo of Skandagiri : A Hike To The Other Side Of The Fear #BestOfTravel by Trablogger

After that I went and packed my bag, rolled down my 'comfy bed',cleared the place and started to climb down the mountain.

Photo of Skandagiri : A Hike To The Other Side Of The Fear #BestOfTravel by Trablogger

While climbing down the hill in that golden hour, I was contemplating the whole series of events. I was happy. I had achieved the purpose of my journey. I had felt the fear, I had lived and undergone the inner conflicts and I had the experiential knowledge. It would allow me to tell my story better.

Photo of Skandagiri : A Hike To The Other Side Of The Fear #BestOfTravel by Trablogger

I was happy because I was hiking down after conquering the mountain of my own fears. The golden light of the sun made those moments more memorable.

Now I could finish my story in a better way!

Skandagiri Hills

Skandagiri hills has another name which is Kalavara Durga or Kalawara Betta. Skandagiri hills is situated in the small town of Chikballapur in Kalwara village which is just about 60 kms from the heart of Bangalore, which is about an hour and a half minutes drive from the city to the foothills. There’s an old temple at the foothills called Papagani Mutt . Many vehicles are parked near Papagani Mutt which marks the start of the Skandagiri trekking trail.

Skandagiri used to be a hill fort garrison for the rulers in the 18th century. Skandgiri’s hilltop fort is in a dilapidated condition and ruins of the fort remind you of an erstwhile era of rulers such as the Palegars or Tipu Sultan of Mysore who ruled these hills till 1791 after which it was surrendered to the British who held it till the peace treaty of 1792.

Adventuresome offers many hill treks around the city. For Skandagiri trek, you can choose between a day or a night trek. Skandagiri hills is a 1400 metres high peak. The Skandagiri Trek is fairly easy but are recommended to be taken under the guidance of an expert. Early morning or the wee hour treks are the most famous at Skandagiri.

Skandagiri hills Trek Permissions

Skandagiri hills has been a very famous trekking spot amongst Bangaloreans and groups of trekkers have been swarming the place from many years (Mostly on Weekends). Many people visiting Skandagiri would throw waste and destroy the pristine hillside area. Some responsible trekking groups like NTC (Night Trekkers Club) and Adventuresome also organised drives to pick up as much waste as they could with the help of many volunteer trekkers.  Many cases of techies falling and other trekkers getting injured due to unguided adventures have been reported in the past years.

Now-a-days any trekker or a trekking group who want to trek Skandagiri must take prior permissions by applying online. The entry fee for Skandagiri hills is 250 rupees. The parking charges are extra.

Sometimes the online booking waiting period increases due to many trekkers applying at the same time.

Hello everyone, I am more than happy to share my experience with my first-night trek. This trek gave me a lot of new friends, a walk-in nature in the night with so many people around me having a good experience together. This being my first trek I am happy to tell these experiences & moments were possible because of all the coordinators who helped us. I am going to get more of my friends in the future events. Thank you Adventuresome.

Trek was nice but so much of tiring 🙂 whoever is planning for this trek I would like to suggest them to do few stretching exercises at-least for 3-4 days before this trek. Relaxing on the peak of Skandagiri under sky roof along with Stars and campfire was superb 🙂 Adventuresome is all safe and reliable and organized 🙂 Even I went alone in a group, got good accompany. You will find a decent crowd. Sahil our trek leader was nicely coordinating with everyone. Some Tips:- 1. Do stretching exercises before 2-3 days of the actual trek 2. Wear Trekking Shoes only 3. Do not wear Jeans as there are so many Rocky patches to climb up. 4. Carry Winter Jacket and cap as the early morning you will find its tough time to survive from cold 🙂 5. Torch by default for Night Trek 6. Try to keep your bag light weighted as much as possible. The overall experience was nice…

This place is amazing and so beautiful as it gave you the vibe of the morning. The trek is not so tough and the guide dives you the company so you don’t feel boring. In short, a nice trek can go with you people.

Not many tour operators offer the mystical Skandagiri night trek option, but Adventuresome does on demand! This was the ultimate adventure for us, we were a group of 8 people. I did not know such a short trek could be so thrilling! And the whole thing was so immaculately arranged that the Skandagiri trek had to go well. Kudos to Adventuresome for the brilliant planning!

' src=

Though it was a short trip, the good planning and hospitality of Adventuresome will always stay with us. I was apprehensive about the service I was about to receive, but I was pleasantly surprised. The car ride was smooth, the breakfast was good, and our guide was patient and helpful. Overall, my Skandagiri night trekking experience was great! A brilliant job by Adventuresome.

Awesome experience. Travel:- If you are opting for a bike it will cost you around 500rs. But you need to travel for 140km up n down. Else opt for the Traveller 1350rs. Level of trekking:- Depends on person to person. For me it was moderate. But if you are a newbie in trekking I will say it’s difficult. You will get tired for sure. It is worth going place. Far far better than Nandi hills. This is overlooked. Required things:- Carry a torch or mobile torch is more than enough. Carry something to eat. Raincoat, water bottle. Zenith:- This is a beautiful experience you will have once you reach. Can’t explain in words. You need to go there to experience it 🙂

' src=

Your guidance is very good and knowledgeable, you described very nicely and during the trek we follow your suggestions, we went to some hidden places too. The breakfast place was fine and we enjoyed it. Good to go.

' src=

A very beautiful place is full of adventure and a prime location. We did this trek twice and both time we enjoyed very much. The perfect break from the hustle-bustle of the city and super relaxing. Must book from Adventuresome as they provide you the best guide of this place and pick up service too. Full-on adventure. HIGHLY RECOMMENDED.

' src=

We trekked to Skandagiri from the foothill in hot summer. This will be a superb trek after the rainy season. Please note that it is not a well-marked route and without mobile connectivity, so keep a track of your bearing. I will call it a mild trek, but a very long one(3-4km one-sided). Nature is amazing and one needs to figure out a route based on a general direction. Keep a compass or GPS, or you are sure to get lost. Also, there is nothing to eat or drink so carry enough food/water. The only place you can eat is on the way back at the temple.

' src=

Thanks a lot for the article post. Many thanks again.

' src=

The Trek was well planned and executed by you people. I had a very good Experience, Nice conversations & a lot of fun after a long time. I have done many good treks in the past and this was my first with this group. So, thinking that this review is sheer out of my first trek experience would not be true. Prashant, Abhishek & Shifali managed it very well. All people in the group for this trek were cool in their own way. Improvements are always there to adopt. I would recommend people travelling with Adventuresome.

Oh! I have been doing so many mistakes. I always thought my travel blog has to be only about me or experience-based. 🙁 I am beginning to see a different perspective to travel blogging. Lots to correct now. Thank you very much for these pointers.

' src=

I’m impressed, I have to admit. Seldom do I encounter a blog that’s equally educative and amusing, and without a doubt, you have hit the nail on the head. I am very happy that I stumbled across this during my search for Skandagiri hills.

Always great advice. It’s more than just writing – you need to be an experience as well!

If anyone plans on trekking to Machu Picchu during the winter, see my post on why you should NOT GO during this time 😉

' src=

Love your advice! Thanks for some down to earth realism as well! I’m a traveler just starting out and love to hear this itinerary as I will navigate myself for trekking. I also love your blogs list! Some I have read and some I don’t but you have enough great ones I do have trust you enough to get the ones I don’t and read ASAP! This was very helpful and valuable! Thank you for sharing your insight and for bringing some balance to the field.

Will AI Become Friend or Foe to Animators?

As the animation community deals with industry contraction, one force inspires more fear and uncertainty than any other: Artificial intelligence. The Annecy Festival will screen four works using AI after receiving dozens of submissions that used the technology.

Why long-form tiktok videos make perfect sense, artists debate the ethics of artificial intelligence in emotionally-charged annecy roundtable: 'don't you think humans want human art', popular on variety.

In March, at Ireland’s cartoon festival, Animation Dingle, Gaffney participated in a panel dubbed the “Ascendance of AI in the Creative Realm.” It was presented in the hopes of giving students who aspire to work in animation an opportunity to ask questions from industry leaders about how AI will affect their prospects.

“Everything is programmed for students at the festival,” says Maurice Galway, Animation Dingle’s director and co-founder. “There are a lot of young people I’ve heard from, and they don’t like the idea of [AI], but it’s not that it’s going to change. We’re not going back, so people will likely have to learn to use it as part of their work.”

“AI uses data to pop things out,” says Doreau. “There is no futuristic vision. There’s nothing investigative, prospective or creative. So, it’s limited. Artists won’t be replaced because it’s not possible as long as we want to do innovative things, which is less evident in today’s market. So, the risks are either a stagnation like in medieval times when innovation was dangerous, or we will use AI as a tool so we can work a little bit faster.”

AI also brings up thorny issues surrounding copyright of intellectual property. Often story, characters and overall animation spend years in development between preproduction and the iterative production process when scenes are repeatedly screened, workshopped and rewritten.

If the original creators feed their materials into AI to teach it to make things like backgrounds so animators can eliminate having to repeat certain tasks during production, that’s no different than the makers of something like the old Tom and Jerry cartoons repeating a background as the mouse tries to escape the cat. However, when a company or individual outside of those creators aim to use materials they don’t own in conjunction with AI, that becomes something very different.

Drew Mullin, executive in charge of production for CBC Kids in Canada, believes broadcasters are concerned about AI scraping data from non-licensed sources since it can bring up copyright issues. It’s an opportunity for producers and artists to use the tools to cut down on production time, but carefully controlling what materials will be used to train AI for certain tasks will continue to be challenging. For now, they’re working out how they will respond.

“These types of machine learning tools, you know, have been around for a while, and [much] of the software that the teams we work with have had these things incorporated into them,” says Mullin. “It’s something that I marvel at, but first and foremost, I think we have to protect artists and protect the filmmakers and producers that we work with. Being part of CBC Kids, we’re a public broadcaster. We’re just approaching the whole thing very cautiously, and we’re looking at everything on a case-by-case basis because this technology is not going anywhere. How [AI] is incorporated and how it’s used is very important. I think every broadcaster in the world right now is looking at this and looking at implementing policies.”

Gaffney believes production companies have an obligation to discuss how they will and will not use AI in their work. He plans to post his company’s policy on its website in the coming weeks. This will affect the kinds of AI skills he wants animators at Brown Bag to have and how they will work with the technology. The policy will change over time, depending on how the tools evolve and what uses artists find for them in their work.

Gaffney notes that something like Midjourney is “generative AI that has been trained on everybody else’s copyright,” from Pixar to Disney to Brown Bag Films.

“So, anybody around the world can say, ‘Give me a character design in the style of Doc McStuffins or any Pixar character.’ It’s been trained on a lot of people’s copyrights. So, you’re getting a computer to, basically, mimic other people’s copyright now.”

That’s an ethical issue. “If you’re in the business of creating copyright, you also have to be in the business of respecting other people’s copyright,” says Gaffney. “And I think a lot of the generative AI that’s trained on older [artists’ and studios’] copyright is no different than a studio using pirated software. Automation isn’t going away anytime soon. How we use it is going to change, but we shouldn’t cannibalize ourselves and disrespect other people’s copyright.

“There’s certain kind of boundaries that you just don’t touch.”
