How To : Safari Now Lets You Sync and Manage All Your Web Extensions Across Your iPhone, iPad, and Mac

Safari Now Lets You Sync and Manage All Your Web Extensions Across Your iPhone, iPad, and Mac

We've had access to real Safari extensions on iPhone and iPad for a year, and they've been available on Mac for a lot longer than that. To install the same one on all your devices, you always had to find the app in the App Store, install it, and enable the extension on each device. Now, Apple is streamlining the process, making it easier to install and manage extensions across devices.

Starting with iOS 16 , iPadOS 16 , and macOS 13 Ventura, you can share Safari extensions across your iPhone, iPad, and Mac by enabling a simple setting on each device. After that, any compatible Safari extensions on one device can be installed quickly on your other devices. Then, you can enable, disable, and fine-tune them from one device and sync the settings with the others.

  • Don't Miss: Upgrade Safari on Your iPhone with These Powerful Add-Ons

Enable Extension Syncing on Your iPhone or iPad

Toggle on the "Share Across Devices" switch in your iPhone or iPad's Safari settings to sync your extensions across all your iOS 16, iPadOS 16, and macOS 13 devices.

  • Settings –> Safari –> Extensions –> Share Across Devices

Enable Extension Syncing on Your Mac

Check the "Share Across Devices" box in your Mac's Safari preferences to sync your extensions across all your iOS 16, iPadOS 16, and macOS 13 devices.

  • Safari –> Preferences –> Extensions –> Share across devices

Quickly Install Shared Extensions

For any Safari extensions you already have on one device but not any others, the Extensions settings on those other devices will show a new "On Other Devices" section. In those settings, you'll see each app that's not installed, but an iCloud download button will be there for you to install them quickly.

However, there's a catch: The only apps you'll see under "On Other Devices" are those whose Safari extension is currently enabled on one of your other synced devices. If it's installed but disabled on another device, you won't see it in the list until you activate it there. If you see the extension in the list, it will disappear whenever it's turned off on your other devices.

Once an app is installed from the "On Other Devices" section, it will move up to the "Allow These Content Blockers" or "Allow These Extensions" group.

Tip: Enable automatic downloads for apps on all your devices so whenever you install an app on one device, it will automatically install on your other devices. On iOS 16 and iPadOS 16, go to Settings –> App Store –> App Downloads (under Automatic Downloads) to set the feature.

Sync Your Extension Settings

When syncing Safari extensions, any extension you have enabled on one of your devices will be enabled on your other devices, as long as they have the associated app installed. If you toggle an extension off on one device, it should turn off on all your synced devices.

However, the permissions for each Safari extension will not always sync across your devices. So if you have one extension set to "Allow" on all websites and change it to "Ask," it may not affect that permission on your other devices. Sometimes after installing an extension, the permissions for websites will be the same as on your other devices, but any further changes may not sync.

Limitations

The most significant limitation is that each Safari extension needs to be compatible with each device. Not all iPhone apps are available for iPad and Mac, and some iPad and Mac apps only support those platforms. Some of the Safari extensions on your Mac may not have even come from the App Store, so those won't appear on your other devices.

Depending on the Safari extensions you use, it may severely limit the number of extensions that sync to your other devices. For example, I have seven Safari extensions on my iPhone, and only one of those was shared with my Mac.

Safari Gaining Extension Syncing Across Devices, Web Image Translation Support, and More Later This Fall

Later this fall, Safari will be gaining the ability to translate web images with Live Text, support for push web notifications on iOS , extension syncing across iOS, iPadOS, and macOS, and more.

safari icon blue banner

Last year, Apple introduced Safari extensions on iOS and iPadOS, and this year users can enable extension syncing across their iOS, iPadOS, and macOS devices, ensuring a more seamless browsing experience across each platform.

On iOS and macOS, Safari is also gaining Shared Tab Groups, an easy way to share a group of tabs with friends and family. All members of a group can add tabs to the list and collaborate.

For individual Tab Groups, Apple is adding the ability to create dedicated start pages for groups and to pin tabs within Safari Tab groups. Other small changes include improved password recommendations based on-site-specific requirements, cross-device syncing for website settings, and more.

These changes will come as part of iOS 16, iPadOS 16, and macOS Ventura, all currently being beta tested by developers. A public beta will be available in July, followed by a general release in the fall.

I also noticed (from a photo on the Apple website) that Safari tabs have returned to the classic tab design from pre Monterey. I.e. Rectangular rather than rounded and spaced, with the active tab a lighter colour.

Still a slower browser even w/ powerful hardware behind it. Still many sites have issues w/ Safari. Still no sync across PC/Mac browsers (like w/ Chrome), so there's a need to maintain two sets of saved passwords.
Apple should fix bookmark syncing across devices before attempting to sync more consumer data. The amount of cloud sync issues I experience in iOS 15 is a disappointment and worried if it will carry over into iOS 16.
Still no proper extensions like UBlock Origin or Bypass Paywalls Clean

These 5 Tricks Helped Fix My YouTube Music Recommendations

The internet is not forever, so it's time to preserve what you can, windows 11 really wants you to use onedrive, quick links.

  • Google Chrome

Microsoft Edge and Internet Explorer

Mozilla firefox.

More and more, your interactions with computers are dependent on your browser and the web at large. So it's incredibly handy to have your browser history and settings follow you around to other computers. The various makers of your favorite browsers know this, and all of them (with one predictable exception) have built-in tools to help your web experience stay consistent.

Google's Chrome browser has been all about the syncing action since day one. When you install it on a new machine you're instructed to log in, and that's pretty much all you need to do: it will automatically sync your history, bookmarks, usernames and passwords, custom search engines , and settings across all installations. It will also download your extensions from the Chrome Web Store, but take note that most don't include any web storage for settings, so you'll need to take a peek at the extensions settings page if you've customized them to any extent.

To change which particular portions of Chrome are synced, click the menu button in the upper-right corner (the three vertical dots), then "Settings." Click the "Sync" option right below your Google account name. On this screen, you can choose which portions of your browser's history to sync: Apps (sort of like extensions), autofill data, bookmarks, extensions, browser history, saved passwords, other settings, themes and wallpapers (wallpapers only for Chrome OS), open tabs, and Google Payments data. The "Sync everything" toggle, naturally, turns all the options on or off.

Chrome's syncing capabilities extend to Chromebooks as well, along with Android phones and tablets, though the latter doesn't support extensions or custom search engines.

Microsoft's shiny new first-party browser piggybacks off of the syncing tools built into Windows 10, the only operating system to which it's distributed so far (unless you're one of the few remaining Windows Mobile users, I suppose).

Related: All the Features That Require a Microsoft Account in Windows 10

To sync bookmarks, history, and other settings, first make sure that you're logged into Windows 10 with a Microsoft account , not just a local account. Then click the Windows button, type "sync," and select "Sync your settings." The master switch for "Sync settings" needs to be in the "On" position, but the rest of the options can be turned off. Here's where Internet Explorer settings can be synced as well.

Later versions of Firefox include a Chrome-style browser sync function that will move your settings and extensions across Firefox installations on desktops, laptops, phones, and tablets of any supported platform. From the main browser window, click the Settings button in the upper-right corner (the one with three horizontal bars), then click "Sign in to Sync."

Create a Firefox account if you don't already have one, or sign into an existing account. From this page, you can choose which portions of the browser to sync across machines: open tabs, bookmarks, add-ons (extensions), saved passwords, browsing history, and other preferences. Click "Save Settings" and you're good to go.

Opera has been around longer than every other browser on this list, if you can believe it, and it's kept alive by a zealous core of power users. It's also had a built-in sync feature for the longest time.

To sync the latest versions of the browser, click the "Menu" button in the upper-left corner, then "Synchronize." (If you don't see "Synchronize," then you're already logged in---click your account name and proceed to the next paragraph.) Click "Create my account" if you haven't done so yet, or simply log in if you already have an Opera account.

Click "Choose what to synchronize." From this screen you can choose to enable or disable syncing for bookmarks, history, open tabs, passwords, and other browser settings (but not extensions). You can also choose to sync only password data or all browser data uploaded to Opera's sync servers.

On macOS (and by extension iOS), Safari's settings, bookmarks, and other synced items are handled by Apple's iCloud program . To enable browser syncing, click the System Preferences button (the gear) on the dock, then "Internet Accounts." Click "iCloud" and set it up if you don't see it in the left column already.

Make sure that the "Safari" entry is selected, and your bookmarks, Safari reading list, browsing history, and other browser settings will be available on every Mac and iGadget that you've signed into with your Apple account. Usernames and passwords for the browser are handled by the Keychain option, which you may want to enable or disable separately.

Manage work or personal workflows with this excellent project organizer app, 4 vpns that don't require you to sign up or register.

Although browsers have evolved to become more fast, secure, and effective, they have not adapted well to meet the challenge of managing a large amount of information. The users of web browsers today swim in a sea of mess of unorganized tabs and bookmarks.

Browser extensions or add-ons improve the browsing experience by letting you group related tabs, save reference links with proper metadata, and selectively curate your topics of interest. We’ll explore some Safari extensions to manage bookmarks or if you work with many tabs at once.

Note: Legacy Safari extensions are no longer supported from macOS Catalina. Apple has migrated from the traditional extension mechanism to Web Extension, similar to those you find in Chrome Web Store.

Be the Boss of Your Bookmarks

You save links to articles, items you want to buy, news sources you want to track, and other favorites all the time. But when it comes to accessing the bookmarks, the disorganized folder makes it tough to find the links . These useful extensions can help you get to the sites you want quickly and easily.

1. Raindrop.io

Raindrop.io is a vibrant bookmark manager that stores your bookmarks online. What this means is that your bookmarks sync across the devices without any limitations put by the browser-controlled ecosystem. You can save any webpage, organize them in different collections, and add tags. It’s also possible to mark your favorites, nest folder, sort bookmarks by date, name, or site.

You can search bookmarks by details, URL, tag, type, date, or cached content. When you have many tabs open, click Tabs located in the bottom-left corner of a window. The saved tabs will have a tag with the date. The Pro version of Raindrop.io automatically creates a cached copy of your bookmarks. So even if a link is dead, you can still access them on the site.

Download : Save to Raindrop.io (Free, subscription available)

2. G App Launcher

G App Launcher is the extension to access Google sites and services. At first thought, you might think, why would anyone need this add-on when many Google apps are a click or press away. It gives you access to some rare Google services you might not have heard of, but might come helpful in many situations.

For example, you can create a shortcut of Google Trends, Scholar, Jobs on Google, Opinion Rewards, Play Academy, Flights, Advanced Search, Google Design, Research, and much more. In addition, you can create custom shortcuts for any websites.

Click the Settings button to see the list of available shortcuts on the left, and to the right is the panel for your shortcuts. Now drag-and-drop the bookmarks from left panel to the right. You can even sort your selection via the Sort button.

3. GoodLinks

GoodLinks is a read-it later and bookmarking app. While it offers functionality similar to Raindrop.io, the app uses Cloudkit to sync articles across your Apple devices. It extracts the article text and offers you different customization options to provide a wonderful reading experience.

To get started, click the extension icon, add a tag or summary, then click Add . When you open the app, you’ll see an organized view of your saved pages. You can categorize pages into Unread, Starred, Untagged, and Read. GoodLinks has extensive support of Siri Shortcuts, URL scheme, and beautiful widgets to quickly access your article list.

Tackle Too Many Tabs

While tabs have become an integral part of how people navigate the web, they continue to represent as simple, ordered lists of pages with limited contextual cues and understanding of high-level tasks. If you're looking for a Safari tab manager, these extensions can help you organize tabs, prevent tab clutter, and cut distractions.

1. Safari Tab Groups

Most of us switch between several tabs during an average browsing session, and keeping them organized is not easy. The Safari Tab Groups feature lets you bundle relevant tabs together and switch between them whenever necessary. You can label Tab Groups with custom names to identify them, and use them in various ways.

For example, you can tab group per topic (Finance, Health), project (Clients, Freelancing), or type. To get started, follow our guide on using Safari tabs for Mac . Any tab group you create sync across your Apple devices, allow some degree of organization to prevent clutter, and personalization. Depending upon your use case and goal for browsing, there are differences between bookmarks and tab groups .

2. Tab Space

Imagine you’re doing research for a project. After browsing through a dozen or more links, you got some great information you want to reference later on. Since you haven’t taken any action, you can save these tabs in a separate session. That’s the primary role of the Tab Space extension.

It provides an intuitive workspace to see your saved sessions with the date and time stamps. The colorful buttons at the top-right open your tabs in bulk and automatically remove them from the session list. Or, you can export the tabs as Text, HTML, Markdown, and as a backup file.

While saving tabs, you can set options to ignore pinned, duplicate, or include tabs from all windows. For each session, you can edit tab titles, tag, or merge tabs with the earlier session. The built-in shortcuts and context menu integration further simplify the interaction with browser tabs. For example, press Ctrl +F or Ctrl + C to open your tabs in Firefox or Chrome.

Tabz is a useful utility that aggregate tabs from Safari and Chrome in a simple list that you can filter and navigate quickly. If you use multiple browsers with a specific purpose, say Chrome for work and Safari for personal use, then this add-on can save time and mental energy. The add-on merge tabs from the same domain, even if the web pages are open in different browsers.

The add-on goes one step ahead to help you focus on the work. To do this, add a domain ( More > Allowed During Focus ) to the list and click Start Focus Session . If you try to open a website not included in the list, it will automatically close during the focus period. Go to Preferences to include more browsers like Brave, Microsoft Edge, and Safari Technology Preview.

Troubleshooting, how to sync safari bookmarks with google chrome.

How to Sync Safari Bookmarks with Google Chrome

Many people who own iPhones and iPads also use Windows computers, and if you’re one of them, chances are you use both Safari on iOS/iPadOS and Chrome on Windows. Fortunately, you can easily sync your bookmarks between both these browsers, thanks to a browser extension.

With the help of the iCloud Bookmarks Chrome extension that’s developed by Apple, you can seamlessly switch between Safari and Google Chrome across your devices without having to worry about losing your bookmarks. All your bookmarks are synced using iCloud, and they’re readily available whether you’re on your iPhone, iPad, Mac, or Windows PC.

Interested in setting this feature up on your computer? We’re here to help you get started, and you’ll be syncing Safari Bookmarks with Google Chrome on Windows in no time.

How to Sync Safari Bookmarks with Google Chrome on PC

Keeping your Safari bookmarks in sync with Google Chrome requires you to have iCloud for Windows installed on your PC in addition to the extension. Once you’re done with the installation, just follow the steps below:

How to Sync Safari Bookmarks with Google Chrome

That’s pretty much all you need to do.

From now on, when you switch to Safari on your iPhone after using Chrome on your Windows computer, you’ll find that Safari has already updated all its bookmarks to match what’s on Chrome.

Active bookmarks syncing is currently only available for Chrome, but since Microsoft’s Edge browser is now Chromium-based, you will be able to install this Chrome extension on your Edge browser by allowing extensions from other sources . Thanks to this workaround, you can keep your Edge bookmarks in sync with Safari too.

This is just one of the browser extensions that Apple offers to Chrome users. Apart from iCloud Bookmarks, there’s also an iCloud Passwords extension that allows you to use saved passwords that are stored in iCloud Keychain on your Windows PC. To use this, you need to have version 12 of iCloud for Windows or later installed on your computer.

If you use Chrome on your Mac, it’s worth noting that iCloud does not sync bookmarks between Chrome for macOS and Safari. These steps for actively syncing bookmarks only work on a Windows computer. Therefore, if you use Chrome on Mac, but Safari on your iOS device, you’re out of luck (for now anyway, or if you know a solution to this then let us know in the comments).

Now you know you can sync all your Safari bookmarks with Chrome. What do you think of this feature for Windows users? Let us know your thoughts in the comments.

I wonder how this works with multiple Chrome and Safari user profiles. Can it map Safari personal profile and Chrome persona profile, and also the “work” profiles in each browser?

I might back up my bookmarks and give it a shot afterwards. I’m assuming the worst but hoping for the best.

iCloud Bookmark Sync is NOT the way to go to sync bookmarks between Safari and Chrome (on Windows) IF you use Chrome with multiple profiles(=different email accounts) because Safari does not have the concept of different profiles therefore it combines all bookmarks of all Chrome profiles. After that this joined list of bookmarks are synced down to each Windows PC/laptop so that all Chrome instances running on them (using different profiles) get this full list of bookmarks created by iCloud. As if this was not terrible enough, during the next cycles of sync, all of this Chrome instances (using different profiles) running on these different devices sync their bookmarks with iCloud which then creates duplicates. The longer the sync stays active, the more duplicates are created. In Short, iCloud Windows App can only be used, when Chrome (on Windows) is used with a single profile.

You are right. I encounter this issue when i use iCloud Bookmark Sync.

It there better solution to sync bookmark between Safari and Chrome? I mainly use Chrome on Windows system, and Safari on MacBook and iPhone.

I have tons of bookmarks in Safari and Chrome . How does the resolve conflicts between the 2 browsers? Will Safari’s bookmarks look like Chrome’s ? Or vice versa?

This is a typical big f*ck by Apple. Max users cannot use this. When I have my MBP plugged in I use Brave, better security and performance. Also it works much better with the Google Worksuite im environment because of the extensions. But when I’m on the go I use Safari because of its power efficiency.

Ask a new question

Syncing Microsoft Edge and Safari bookmarks via icloud

With my previous laptop, i could sync my chrome bookmarks on my laptop with the safari bookmarks in my ipad using icloud and choosing 'chrome' in the browser selection in the icloud application in the laptop (there are 3 choices there: internet explorer, Firefox and Chrome). That worked fine.

Now I have a new laptop with Microsoft Edge on it. Suppose I import all the bookmarks from Chrome to Edge, can i now sync the Edge bookmarks with the safari bookmarks on the ipad using icloud in the same way. I am asking because there is no "Edge" entry in the icloud application. What shall i choose (if possible at all..) in this case (IE-?, Firefox-No!, Chrome-No!). Is this doable or shall i stay with chrome on new laptop and safari on ipad ?

Hi sh1406 ,

Thanks for your post in Microsoft Community.

It sounds like that you currently need to sync bookmarks to the Microsoft Edge. As Chrome and iClound are not a product of Microsoft, we cannot provide you with more help, but here are some suggestions:

Since there is no option to sync directly to the Edge, it seems like you have to take two steps.Since IE and Edge are the products of Microsoft, you can try to sync IE first and then sync to Edge. And Since Edge and Chrome are the same core, you can try to sync Chrome first and then sync to Edge.

If direct synchronization does not solve the problem, you can try to export bookmarks from other browsers and then import Edge.

For this,kindly check:

What's imported to the new Microsoft Edge

Thanks for your feedback.

This is easily doable, though not necessarily intuitive. Since Microsoft Edge can install Chrome extensions, you simply need to install the iCloud Chrome extension in Edge ( iCloud Bookmarks - Chrome Web Store (google.com) ) and select Chrome in the iCloud application (you might want to remove the extension from your Chrome application in order to prevent conflicts).

I've just used this setup successfully to sync Edge bookmarks with Safari on iOS (iPhone and iPad); it seems the iCloud application accepts the sync instructions from Edge because it is the same engine (Chromium).

For the time beeing , i decided to stay with chrome/safari combo, since it works fine and sufficiently fast for me and i am familiar with it.

I will keep your post anyway if i need it in the future.

Thanks again.

Troubleshooting Sync Issues

While the synchronization of Safari browsing data between your iPhone and Mac is designed to be seamless, you may encounter occasional sync issues that disrupt the consistency of your browsing experience across devices. Understanding how to troubleshoot these issues can help you resolve any discrepancies and ensure that your Safari data remains up to date and readily accessible. Here are some common troubleshooting steps to address sync issues:

Check iCloud Status : Begin by verifying the status of iCloud services. Sometimes, temporary service disruptions can affect the synchronization of Safari data. You can check the status of iCloud on Apple's system status page to determine if there are any ongoing issues that may be impacting sync functionality.

Ensure Stable Internet Connection : A stable internet connection is essential for the seamless synchronization of Safari data. If you are experiencing sync issues, ensure that both your iPhone and Mac are connected to a reliable Wi-Fi network. Unstable or slow internet connections can impede the syncing process.

Restart Devices : Sometimes, a simple restart can resolve sync issues. Restart your iPhone and Mac to refresh their systems and potentially resolve any underlying synchronization issues.

Update Operating Systems : Ensure that both your iPhone and Mac are running the latest versions of their respective operating systems. Software updates often include bug fixes and improvements that can address sync-related issues.

Check iCloud Storage : Insufficient iCloud storage can hinder the synchronization of Safari data. Verify that you have adequate iCloud storage available for syncing your browsing data. If your iCloud storage is full, consider managing your storage or upgrading to a higher storage tier.

Reset Safari Sync : If you continue to experience sync issues, you can attempt to reset Safari sync settings on both your iPhone and Mac. This involves disabling Safari sync in iCloud settings and then re-enabling it to initiate a fresh synchronization process.

Contact Apple Support : If persistent sync issues remain unresolved, reaching out to Apple Support can provide further assistance. Apple's support team can offer personalized guidance and troubleshooting steps to address specific sync-related challenges.

By following these troubleshooting steps, you can effectively address sync issues that may arise when syncing Safari data between your iPhone and Mac. Resolving these issues ensures that your browsing experience remains consistent and convenient across both devices, allowing you to seamlessly access your bookmarks, reading list, and browsing history.

In conclusion, the seamless synchronization of Safari browsing data between your iPhone and Mac enhances your browsing and reading experience, providing a cohesive and convenient environment across both devices.
