Good value hotel in the heart of atoll.”

In overall we enjoyed staying in a hotel. It was our first water bungalo experience and was fantastic. We were pleased to find how good the local buffet restaraunt is. Among things we didn't really like: - Safari island is located on a beatuful atolll however it's sad to say this - corals are like 90% dead. Marine life is still there, but I only can predict that it will get worse every year - Yes, global warming is happening and it's a general issue not only to Maldives but I think the hotel impacted negatively a lot too. When I was snorkeling I have found that sewage pipe was leaking and dirty water was just released on a surface poisoning corals and fish. You could see how big is the difference in water up and down the current in that place from transparent blue to almost like a milk water.. This pipe is full of patches so I assume this was a regular problem happening from time to time - To my opinion the hotel is too much focused on earning and this impacts tourists comfort. Like for example you get for free 0.5L of water, the rest you have to buy yourselfes from a bar for 5USD per bottle. But it's not only about the price - you have to always watch for your water stock in the room because if you run out of water - you need to walk all the way to the bar to get some. I would prefer that water is just supplied in the room in the amount I would wish to use. Same for the dinner, in another hotels on Madlives you get water for free served by a waiter which is inluded in the buffet price but here you have to buy a plastic bottle ( and serve it yourselfes! ) - Shower was always cold for like first 5 minutes, so we had to waste a lot of water till the moment it gets at least warm.. - only a small shower gel bottle ( 10 ml probably ). For a family of 3 people when we do snorkeling few times a day this amount is not enough - we regret that we didn't take own shower gel.. So in conclusion - this is still a very great place to spend your vacation, but do not expect much from point of a service if visiting this place. You may not be treated as a special guest. Meanwhile we liked the presonnel - everyone was very friendly and hospitale.

We stayed for a week. You have many activities to do. The resort has many different beaches. Buffet menu is great, they have many options that are also changed daily.

Totally recommended ”

The hotel was great. Beach was stunning. Great for swimming; we were afraid of the sharks, luckily we didn’t encounter any while swimming. The over water villas are worth every penny. We took the semi water villa, it was better because it was closer to the restaurant and reception. However, little privacy since at lunch time people at the restaurant could see you swimming. Especially if you’re in semi water room number 131-134 However, still better than the beach villa. Beach villa looks nice and over look the sandy side of the beach which is perfect for swimming without any sharks. Semi water villas overlook a lot of reefs so you will see sharks and it is the best spot for snorkeling. I loved that they cleaned the room twice daily. Buffet was nice had a wide variety of food selection, not fancy tho but it’s what you paid for. We stayed 4 days and each day there were something new to the buffet not the same thing every day. If you’re honeymooners they will give you a complimentary candle light dinner. Which is so cute. I think the hotel needs to renovate their furniture and mattress as well

On arrival do not expect drums and fireworks, as the smiles, the refreshing towels and the drinks at the reception are more than enough. Anchored in the North Ari atoll and shaped like a curved Dhoni (Maldivian traditional boat), Safari Island is a magical place where water and sand lie in contrast to the exuberant green foliage. Even in the Maldives, an island so perfectly formed as Safari is rare. The resort is lush, with wide sandy beaches surrounding the emerald green and is home to one of the most colourful and lively house reef in the Maldives. The island is tiny and cozy, but beautiful, and you can easily walk around in a few minutes. You understand you are in Maldeves in every moment with beautiful sea and sand.

A thread of 15 Semi-Water Bungalows run on one tip of the island. The opposite end is a jetty leading to 39 Water Bungalows. The 30 Beach Bungalows are on the island part in exotic green vegetation including palm trees. All the 84 rooms come with sea view.

Safari Island, overwater restaurant

One side of the island is a clear lagoon and a corals on the other. Greenery has more of some bushes than palms and mangroves. Lagoon part faces the west and has more privacy but is full of dhonies and boats coming and going. Eastern part has more 'Maldivian look' with better beach but is crowded and bungalows have less privacy. There is a small swimming pool close to the restaurant. Also a small library at the reception.  DOWNLOAD RESORT MAP

There are two sides of the island with beach villas - the one where the jetty is and the east side. Its more quiet with sun in the morning up to around 3.30 pm. The jetty side is quite loud as all the small sea planes lands there, but you get sun most of a day and even beautifull sun set. The east side is very quite and I personally think, much much nicer. Every day at 5.30 on the jetty side you can see sharks feeding if you are bored.

As for the clientele, when we were staying there were people from China, Europeans, Americans, Russians, Thais and other Asians. All kind of tourists, families, friends, young and elder couples.

Safari Island, main swimming pool

Ari Atoll is 89km in length and 30km in width and has 105 islands and is administratively divided into two parts: North Atoll Ari and South Ari Atoll. South Ari Atoll, a Protected Marine Area, remains one of the best places in the world to see whale sharks, which are spotted year-round on the outer reef, while North Ari Atoll is famous for its hammerhead sharks, although these are far more elusive and require deep diving to see. Most of the islands are home for the  luxury resorts while others are uninhabited, the rest are inhabited by local residents. The main occupations of Ari Atoll are fishing, sailing, harvesting and processing of corals.  READ MORE

The resort is situated on the beach of Mushimasgali Island in the Maldives. At Velana International Airport (Malé) you'll be met by hotel staff and helpe aboard seaplane. Air Taxi Maldivian will take you from Malé directly to the Safari Island in approximately 20 minutes. The scenic seaplane transfer offers an unforgettable bird’s eye view en route to this Island resort in Maldives.

Dream hideaway, intimate and magical setting; choose from one of the 30 Maldivian types of thatched, detached Beach Bungalows, 15 Semi-Water Bungalows and 39 Water Bungalows. All types of accommodation have direct sea view so that‘s super nice. Best rooms are the Semi-Water Bungalows as these have full privacy, are all South/Southwest (enjoy the sun all day) and are in front of the main entries/exits for the house reef snorkeling.

Room Facilities:

Beach Bungalows (45 sqm) Hot & cold fresh water, Bathtub with separate shower, Air condition, mini fridge, Satellite TV with flat Screen, Hair Dryer, Telephone, Tea/ Coffee making facilities, Wc, Luxury bamboo furniture, Sun Chair, Bathroom amenities ( Bathrobe, Shampoo, Conditioner and Shower gel) Wi-Fi available at cost.

Semi Water Bungalows and Water Bungalows (45sqm): In Addition to the Beach bungalow facilities, Glass bottom table, Backdoor to the private sundeck, direct access to lagoon and land.

Safari Island

Beach Bungalows on the Reef Side are our first recommendation: because you can easy get to house reef, on this side is also the restaurant and the bar, it is not so windy and the beach is also very-very nice. The other side, Lagoon Side, it is windy, good for sports for example, but there are also the Dhoni Boats to see and much more "action and sea waves". There are some Beach Bungalows on this lagoon side, with a thin strip of sand (rooms 110-112).  SEE ROOM № MAP

On the reef side, starting from the restaurant, Beach Bungalows 129 and 130 are very close to the reception, the next ones (120-128) have more beach in front of the villas. There is also the chance bigger that chinese people will "camp" for some hours in front of you, because they mostly book Water Villas. The others 120-113 have more vegetation - that means more privacy.

The Rooms inside are nice, wood mostly, sure they have "some years" but when you find something "damaged" remember, we go wet inside and bring a lot of sand and that is sure not good. Twice per day will be cleaned, so they are really clean, most of the time. The guests like the large window, or rather the entire frontal wall of glass and the sea can be seen directly from the bed. TV, tea, safe, canopy bed. The bathroom has two sinks, separate shower and bath. A covered veranda with two massive deck chairs and your own sun beds on the beach. Bungalows have direct access to the beach, sand is fine as powder, the entrance to the water is very safe.

Safari Island

Semi-Water Bungalows get the best of both beach and over water. Bungalow has an entrance from the shore, and the sun terrace is located above the water with direct access to the blue lagoon. Right opposite the bungalows a few meters away is the house reef teeming with a fish life. Living spaces bathed in warm natural light, perched atop the turquoise lagoon. A full sea-facing wall opens out to the spacious over-water terrace and the expansive lagoon beyond. Some people recommend numbers from 140 to 147 but they are far away from restaurant. If you are too lazy when you are hungry the closest ones like 133 are just perfect. Two great different feelings.

The Overwater Bungalows are smaller than most in the Maldives, but still larger than typical hotel rooms elsewhere. Each stylish residence features a glass-bottom coffee table with direct views down into the lagoon below, plus steps down into the lagoon from the private sun deck. With custom-made rattan furniture, wood floors, these rooms have a real 'wow' factor. Here you’ll also be able to choose between sunset or sunrise views. The furniture, the bathroom is renewed and all is clean. Water Bungalows have the privacy and the view is exactly the same as the photos. Cleaning is good. No complaints.

The Island is surrounded by white powdery, sandy beaches and crystal clear water lagoon and house reef which is attractive for snorkeling and diving with attractive diving spots.

Although you will find beautiful beaches all over the island - yes you can spot also a sandbags on Safari like everywhere else. You must have in mind, the resort try the best to save their island and the beaches for their guests. It is nature, not man's fault. Mostly sandbags protect the island on the northern tip close to Beach Villa 113 and 110-112.

The house reef is just minutes from the shore. Safari Island Resort is one of the few islands having house reef so close to the island. Despite the closeness to the reef, the opposite side of the island have no reef and just clear blue waters if anyone is interested. The lagoon is ideal for watersports.

Safari Island

Dining and Wining

The resort has one restaurant and three bars. Shaded with a magnificent white marquee, the Lagoon restaurant open for breakfast, lunch and dinner and serves food with buffet style, including lively Theme Nights. The restaurant and bars are also set over-water so you‘ll always have spectacular ocean views.

Table and a waiter for each room is reserved. Always ready and clean. Most of the time good meat and chicken are serve by generous portions. Food quality is overall very good, in terms of variety, quantity and most importantly quality. There is almost every evening something new to eat and tasty. Buffets are very rich with 6-7 different stations (Curries, Meat, Vegetables, Very Nice Salads, Pasta Experience Cook, Special Meet Cook, Top Deserts). The prices for Beers (4.50$) and Drinks (8$+) are fair. The special food also can prepare on request. The staff is very gentleman and helpfull. Snacks in the afternoon are limited to couple of types of sandwiches, there should be more alternatives, like salad. At for wine, is dissapointment as only one red, one white and one rose by glass. You should not miss the scheduled meals as there is no other alternatives. No room service. Room refrigerator needs to be filled by your selves.

Sunday night dinner is Maldivian/Asian night with a themed menu and Soups, breads and desserts are homemade and the fresh, tropical fruits are delicious. The buffet lines also include live action, cooking station which the chefs prepare your food as your preference. A Selected A La Carte Menu is available in the Restaurant which is chargeable. Restaurant opening hours: Breakfast: 07.30 - 10:00; Lunch: 12:30 - 14:00 (every Friday lunch at 13:15 - 14:30) Dinner: 19:30 - 21:00

Twice daily the restaurant throws fish scraps into the ocean, which lured in fantastic sea life: massive rays, eels, larger sharks than the usual swimming around everywhere, and more.

Safari Island, main buffwt restaurant

Palm is overwater bar set next to the main restaurant. Floating in the turquoise lagoon is the island bar where guests may enjoy drinks and spend leisure time. Open from morning until the last guest leaves, the bar also has a happy hours. The coffee shop at the main bar also serves a range of coffee, light snacks or special meals which can be enjoyed in the spacious environment, serenaded by the sound of the waves and the ocean breeze. Palm Bar will have a large bar counter, area with seating inside and outside deck, over the lagoon, facing Seaview. The bar has live musik once every 2 weeks on Monday and saturday diving movie by diving center team.

The sundown bar set on a wooden deck with a view of the stunning lagoon turns into a splendid a fair at sundown when nature paints a different scene every dusk. The golden sun sinks beneath the horizon casting a multitude of orange, red and pink hues across the sky and there is no place better to enjoy the show that at sundown bar, accompanied with a drink or two

Pool Bar serves drinks and snacks. All Inclusive guests can enjoy their entitled drinks here. The bar also hosts crab race on every Tuesday night. Guests can choose their own crab from the bucket of crabs and place them in the racing track where you win FREE Beers if your crab crosses the line first.

Fulfill your dream and take many selfies for Instagram.

House Reef Snorkeling

Snorkeling in the Maldives is a must and Safari's house reef offers one of the best snorkeling experience in this part of the country. The waters surrounding the island teem with brightly coloured fish and other marine life. The snorkeling is exciting and provide lots to explore and interact with. An easily accessible, the house reef is 7-8 meters distance from the beach and ideal for snorkeling and diving with live corals and many different kinds of sea creatures.

We have done snork every day for hours. No need to take additional tour, island is surrounded by corals. We have seen sea turtle, swam with sharks. If you stay at the resort at least 5 nights, you also receive a free(!), private(!) boat trip out to sea for even more amazing snorkeling.

Superb snorkelling can be done straight from the shore – from the jetty or via the cut-through by the overwater restaurant – and it’s worth booking one of the snorkelling trips to nearby thilas for the chance to spot manta rays or whale sharks. It takes a little longer to reach the best dive sites, but it’s recommended if you don’t mind the journey.

Scuba diving in Ari Atoll is relaxing, adventurous, sometimes challenging, and always stunning. After North Male, Ari (also known as Alifu) is considered the most visited atoll in Maldives, and this contributes to a high degree to the quality of diving. With white sandy beaches and crystal clear waters, many divers rate Ari Atoll's sites to be the best in the country, and they also feature prominently on many Maldivian dive safari routes. Diving in Ari Atoll is not known for the brilliance of its corals. Rather, divers choose these waters for regular discovering pelagic species. Hammerhead sharks, mantas and other pelagics are more common around Ari Atoll, and even the mighty whale shark appears regularly, especially in marine reserves located in the southern part of the atoll.  READ MORE

When it comes to a beautiful setting, very few other honeymoon resorts in Maldives can come close to Safari Island. The resort offers their guests a bespoke Island Vows services set on a secluded stretch of the beach of your choice. All you will have to do is decide on the date that you want your Maldives wedding, and the islanders will do the rest to ensure that your special day is tailored to your liking to make it the perfect day that you always dreamt about.

Safari Island, spa service

This resort hosts a whole range of reviews, some good and some less than ideal. Positive reviews detail a great staff that are consistently friendly, views that impress and great food. Negative reviews touch on difficult Wi-Fi, semi clean rooms and lack of a manager on-site to help answer questions and take care of concerns. It is important to keep in mind though that this resort is relatively new and complaints may be from kinks that will work themselves out over time.

Safari Island Resort and Spa – Maldives

safari island hotel

The Safari Island Resort and Spa features a private beach, sand banks, and a small accessible reef. Guests here will also find 39 overwater bungalows along with 15 more Semi-Overwater Bungalows that are perched just on the edge of the island. The resort also has 30 beach bungalows, but it is still on the smaller side and only houses one restaurant, a coffee shop, and a bar.

The overwater bungalows here are smaller than most rooms in the Maldives, but they are still larger than typical hotel rooms elsewhere. Each room features a glass-bottom coffee table with direct views down into the lagoon below, plus steps down into the lagoon from the private sun deck. At launch the off season rates are among the most appealing in the Maldives, while the high season rates aren't quite as low.

WHAT THE REVIEWS SAY

This resort hosts a whole range of reviews, some good and some less than ideal. Positive reviews detail a great staff that are consistently friendly, views that impress and great food. Negative reviews touch on difficult Wi-Fi, semi clean rooms and lack of a manager on-site to help answer questions and take care of concerns. It is important to keep in mind though that this resort is newer and complaints may be from kinks that will work themselves out over time.

Viral video of visitor accosting drag queens in Waikiki hotel sparks outrage

HONOLULU (HawaiiNewsNow) - A visitor from California was recently captured in a viral video yelling at three drag queens in the lobby of a Waikiki hotel and telling the hotel they should not be exposing kids to “cross-dressers.” The exchange has sparked outrage and condemnation, including from Hawaii’s governor.

And on Tuesday, the woman’s employer — the University of California, Davis — also came out against the attack, calling the statements offensive, “deeply hurtful” and not in line with the campus community .

Meanwhile, the Alohilani Resort said it has a zero-tolerance policy for discrimination.

The incident happened Sunday morning when resort guest Beth Bourne said she noticed three drag performers inside the lobby doing a video shoot. With cell phones drawn, the exchange went viral.

Mark Imaizumi was one of the drag queens — in character as Marina Del Rey.

“She was hell-bent on making sure that was heard loud and clear and on tape,” said Imaizumi.

“You felt sadness for her because you know there was no talking around this. I am not surprised with things the way the world is now.”

Police were eventually called, and Bourne said she was escorted to her room.

“At the hotel’s request, the female was issued a trespass warning and removed from the property without further incident,” the Honolulu Police Department said, in a statement.

The Alohilani refunded her hotel charges.

Bourne is back home in California and makes no apologies for her actions. “My feeling about the drag performers were not that the hotel was hosting them or filming them, but they were choosing to do it in a space that was being used by families, children, in a space that you wouldn’t be able to avoid,” said Bourne.

Bourne said she intervene because of her own experience with her teenage daughter, who she says was taught about gender-fluidity in school, which she says led to confusion and angst.

The incident sparked debate on social media.

Among Waikiki hotel guests, some say they understand the concerns but not the approach.

The governor called the video “upsetting” and said it wasn’t in fitting with Hawaii’s inclusive culture.

“I am proud of the performers from Hawai’i’s LGBTQIA community who maintained their dignity and integrity in the face of such a hostile attack,” he said, in the statement.

“This type of behavior is unacceptable. It is not aloha, and we will not tolerate it from anyone.”

As for Imaizumi, one of the drag performers involved, he said he harbors no hate for Bourne and will continue showing aloha as Marina Del Rey.

safari island hotel

In three words:  Serene, tropical oasis.

The best room : Mango House’s best room is actually not a room at all. The Bay House is a three-bedroom villa that you’ll have all yourself, whether you chose to bring the family along (it can sleep up to eight) or just want the upmost privacy during your stay. The four-poster beds with breezy linens are a welcome sight at the end of every day, and the rooms are filled with woven tapestries, blue accents popping in the rugs and pillows, and a soft muted neutral palette that oozes relaxation. The main perk of the villa is the sizable outdoor space, complete with a private plunge pool. Or you can retire to the upstairs balcony in the evenings and enjoy some vibrant sunsets. The bathroom, meanwhile, is done up in a cool stone; it’s home to a separate soaking tub and shower, as well as a dual sink. Also, honorable mention here for the two-bed Cliff House, which comes with panoramic vistas of the bay below and the greenery beyond.

The Rundown

Welcome drink ready and waiting when you arrived? (Bonus point if it wasn’t just fruit juice)  A mango passionfruit drink immediately found its way into my hand as I took in the property, as well as a cool towel that was very much needed after a long travel day. The team also offered up tea or coffee, too, if you need a caffeine boost to fend off that pesky jet lag. Private butler for every room?  Not every room has its own Jeeves, but the hotel’s service is superb enough you won’t be missing him in the slightest. The staff does an impeccable job of always being there when you need them without feeling intrusive. It’s just the right amount of attention; call it the Goldilocks method. If you are looking for a private butler, though, the luxe three-bed Bay House is where you should rest your head.

Is the sheet thread count higher than 300? The thread count is right at 300—and made of 100 percent Egyptian cotton to boot.

Are the toiletries full-sized? Yes, and they give off a deliciously fruit scent. Better still, they’re sourced from a local, eco-friendly beauty brand called Belliche and housed in reusable stone canisters. Mango House is big on sustainability, as you might expect from an island property: You’ll only find cloth hand towels, not paper, in the bathrooms, for instance, and the hotel has a zero-waste initiative with its cocktails and cuisine.

Is there a private pool for the room’s exclusive use? The property’s one-bedroom Bay House, one-bedroom Ocean House, and the aforementioned three-bed Bay House all have their own pool, meaning you can lounge in complete privacy for hours on end. You won’t find one with every room, though, but the hotel’s three pools should more than satisfy your craving for a mid-day dip. Plus, there’s two (small) spots to hop in the Anse Aux Poules Bleues—the bright-blue bay responsible for the hotel’s spectacular water views—if you so desire.

Is there caviar on the room-service menu?  What’s lovely about a hotel like Mango House is that you can have whatever dish you’d like sent up to your room—and that includes some delicacies from Rova Caviar, which comes from a lake perched at an altitude of almost 4,600 feet near Madagascar’s capital city of Antananarivo.

Are the restaurants worth their salt?  There are four different restaurants to check out during your stay at Mango House: Italian spot Muse (where you’ll also grab breakfast each morning); Japanese-focused Azido; Creole locale Moutya; and the poolside Soley. All are lovely, but Moutya is the star. Not only are you sat right beside the ocean on plush chairs, but the eatery allows you to fully experience Seychelles’s local cuisine, one that’s packed with plenty of spice and seafood. I was a fan of the Seafood Platter myself, full of sensationally seasoned lobster, crab legs, and shrimp to boot.

Do you want to spend Friday night in the lobby bar? Oh, definitely. The second floor of the Main House is home to Kokoye, the property’s cocktail lounge. Here, tropical green motifs, wooden accents, and stunning views of the sunset are your company as you indulge in an array of delicious aperitifs. The space is moody, with dim lighting and small lamps adorning each table. Much like the rest of the hotel, it’s not a place to get particularly rowdy; it’s somewhere to sit back and sip without a care in the world. You can also learn a few tricks of the trade from the bar staff thanks to an intimate cocktail-making class. Speaking of spirits, Seychelles is known for its beloved Takamaka Rum, so that’s a must-try. The Blanc is particularly outstanding, as were any cocktails the bartenders created with it. But if gin is more your speed, check out the Flutter-By, a butterfly pea–infused cocktail that’s as sweet as can be.

The Verdict

Forget the journey (which is a bit of a schlep from the good old US of A). For me, it’s always about the destination, and Mango House is certainly worth any pains it takes to get there. The attentive white-glove service, the food, and the views are all spectacular, of course, but what really makes the property special is the aura of relaxation, the ability to truly unwind, that it imbues upon its guests. That is something that can’t be easily replicated, no matter how much a locale may try. As one local puts it: “This is paradise on Earth. Why would you ever want to leave?” And, as we all know, paradise is not so easily found.

Rates:  From $650 (600 euros).

Often equipped with the best amenities and features, like freestanding bathtubs, fireplaces or woodburning stoves, expansive terraces with hot tubs or soaking tubs, and butler or concierge service, treehouse hotel rooms take your comfort seriously. Prairie Island dispensary will offer early test for recreational cannabis sales closer to the Twin Cities

Island Peži, the latest cannabis store to open on tribal land in Minnesota, is already open but will be officially launched Saturday.

MinnPost’s Daily Newsletter

The latest on the politics and policy shaping Minnesota.

Delivered straight to your inbox.

It’s not quite in the metro, but a new dispensary next to the Treasure Island Casino is close enough to be the first test of demand for recreational cannabis, coming at least nine months before other stores will open.

Island Peži , the latest cannabis store to open on tribal land in Minnesota, is already open but will be officially launched Saturday. The dispensary is located between Hastings and Red Wing on Prairie Island Indian Community land, about 40 minutes from St. Paul. That makes it much closer than previously opened tribal stores by the White Earth Nation , the Red Lake Nation and the Leech Lake Band of Ojibwe.

Island Peži (pronounced pay-ZHEE) comes from the Dakota word for “grass.” The logo is based on historic beadwork produced by a tribal member, said Blake Johnson, president of the tribal company that operates the dispensary.

Johnson grew up within sight of the dispensary and is the twin brother of tribal council president Grant Johnson. He also is the tribe’s lobbyist in St. Paul and watched the evolution and eventual passage of the state’s recreational cannabis law last May. He said he has been working with the council to decide if and how the tribe would get involved in the new industry.

“I wanted to diversify our economy as a tribe. We want to be able to see opportunity. This type of income provides benefits for our community,” he said.

Like other tribal business enterprises, including the hotel and casino across a large parking lot from the dispensary, Island Peži has economic development at its core. Johnson said he expects it to employ about 35 people. Profits go to the tribal government for education, health care and other services.

Once it was clear the state law would pass, the tribe began talking to its members about it.

“There was a lot of involvement from our community members who wanted to be a part of this and see how a business comes together,” Johnson said. Not all wanted the tribe to enter the cannabis business.

Blake Johnson

“There are tribal members that still think it is  a bad thing,” he said. “But the general sense among the Dakota people is that cannabis comes from  ‘Ina Maka,’ which is Mother Earth. It’s a medicine, and we see it as that and we see it as an opportunity to provide this medicine.”

The tribal council then developed and passed a cannabis ordinance to lay out how businesses would be created and operated and what rules would govern cultivation, use and possession of cannabis by tribal members for personal use.

While tribes within the state are subject to federal laws and regulations, they are equal sovereigns in relation to the state. So tribal ordinances and tribal regulations are created by tribal councils. Prairie Island, for example, has an ordinance passed by its tribal council. That policy created a tribal cannabis regulatory commission with membership separate from the tribal council that will license and regulate the new dispensary as well as any other cannabis businesses created.

There is another board that oversees the company that operates the dispensary and any future cultivation and manufacturing businesses.

The tribe sponsored “hard-hat parties” for officials from the Office of Cannabis Management and political leaders of the cities and towns around the dispensary to explain the project and show them the building as it was being remodeled.

Early look at retail

The dispensary provides an early look at how stores will operate once non-tribal retail sales begin in 2025. Customers are allowed into the store in small numbers, first showing proof that they are at least 21. They are registered for the store’s loyalty program and can order products on a kiosk or wait until called by one of four budtenders behind the counter. Glass display cases show the cannabis and hemp products available.

Cannabis products are stored in a separate room and handed to budtenders as they are ordered. Each customer is limited to 2 ounces of flower, which is the state possession limit for public possession. A tribal nation sales tax of 6.875% is charged on all purchases.

The store is cash only, and an ATM machine is available. Johnson said he is working on making debit card transactions available. Restrictions on banking due to federal prohibition of cannabis that affect non-tribal cannabis businesses impact tribes as well. As customers leave the store, others are allowed to enter. Consumption is not allowed in or around the store but the tribe’s ordinance does provide for special licenses for on-site consumption at cannabis events.

Charles Goodwin from Red Lake, right, making the first legal recreational marijuana purchase at NativeCare on the Red Lake Reservation.

“Our goal is to make it bright and welcoming so that anyone who walks in the store feels welcome and safe,” Johnson said.

As of now, the Prairie Island tribe does not grow cannabis and instead buys its supply of raw cannabis flower from the White Earth Nation.

“We think that’s a great opportunity to have tribal trade,” Johnson said. “A long time ago tribes had tribal sovereignty trade and we’re very excited to be working with other tribes.” He said he is confident that White Earth will be able to provide enough flower to meet the needs of the Prairie Island dispensary. The arrangement gives the White Earth Nation, located four hours from the Twin Cities, access to the state’s biggest population center as well as southeastern Minnesota.

The store also carries hemp-derived edibles and beverages from existing non-tribal suppliers. Should White Earth or another tribe start manufacturing marijuana-based edibles, Prairie Island would consider adding them to its menu.

A sign at Treasure Island Resort & Casino prohibiting the selling or use of cannabis on the premises.

Johnson said the tribal government is considering building its own supply through both outdoor farms and indoor grow operations. The outdoor cultivation would be on 2.5 acres of tribal land. The indoor grow is planned for five different buildings of 12,000 square feet each that could also house processing and manufacturing of cannabis products.

Go-ahead decisions for  indoor grow have not been made but the intent is to use tribal-grown cannabis both for sale at tribal dispensaries and to sell into the state’s recreational market.

Johnson will fill both roles for now — president of the company that runs the new dispensary and the government relations specialist. That puts him in a rare spot of being both an operator and a lobbyist. And in his St. Paul role, Johnson is involved in negotiations with Gov. Tim Walz’s office regarding a state-tribal compact on cannabis .

While the Prairie Island dispensary is the closest supply to the Twin Cities now, that advantage goes away once retail stores, microbusinesses and mezzobusinesses begin opening. The tribe could continue to sell cannabis at the wholesale level to non-tribal businesses but it might also be able to open its own stores off reservation lands. That is among the issues being discussed in talks between the governor’s office and 10 of the state’s 11 tribal nations.

“I think there’s a great opportunity to look at business on state lands,” he said. “We’re in discussions with the governor’s office and OCM on what a compact would look like and we look forward to the opportunity to be able to help the market out.”

Johnson said there is draft language for a compact but said there still needs to be “deeper conversations on what a compact would look like and to have those tough discussions with the state.”
