Best Safari Parks and Game Reserves Near Durban

Best Safari Parks and Game Reserves Near Durban

Ariadne is an Africa expert. She and her husband form a team who author the Rough Guide to Game Parks of South Africa.

You don’t need to travel far from Durban, KwaZulu-Natal’s largest city and the country’s busiest port, to get to the bush. The city, with its urban sprawl and idyllic coastline, is a good springboard to visit some of the province’s many safari parks and game reserves. Maybe you would like to self-drive to Hluhluwe-Imfolozi, the country’s oldest game reserve, or indulge in the 5-star treatment offered in Phinda or marvel at Tembe’s giant elephants. Below are some of our favorite safari parks and game reserves near Durban.

18 Safaris Near Durban

1. Hluhluwe-Imfolozi Game Reserve

Rhino and baby at Hluhluwe Park

Hluhluwe-Imfolozi , one of South Africa’s most popular game reserves, is less than a 3-hour drive from the hustle and bustle of the Durban metropolis. It was established in the 1890s as a sanctuary for what was then the country’s last remaining population of southern white rhino. The reserve has been overwhelmingly successful and this is now one of the top places in Africa to see this threatened member of the Big 5. Other animals you might spot here include elephant, buffalo, giraffe and a variety of antelope including the gracious nyala.

  • Distance from Durban: 2½ hours
  • Accommodation options: Inside the reserve, Hilltop and Mpila Camps offer a variety of options including self-catering chalets, family cottages, safari tents and budget rondavels with communal ablutions. There are several private lodges and hotels outside the reserve as well.
  • Activities: Game drives, game walks, overnight wilderness trails

2. Phinda Private Game Reserve

Lioness at Phinda Game Reserve

Phinda is the most well-known and prestigious private game reserve near Durban. Staying in one of the six luxury lodges is an experience in itself – understated elegance and fine dining is the game. Phinda prides itself on the quality of the guiding and a safari here is not only exciting but also hugely educational. Expect close-up encounters of many creatures, big and small, and quite likely some action too. Phinda’s flagship animal is the cheetah and this is one of the best places to observe this gracious big cat’s behaviour; whether it is grooming, nursing cubs or running at lightning speed to hunt.

  • Distance from Durban: 3 hours
  • Accommodation options: Phinda is home to six luxury lodges, each with its own individual charm and character: Mountain Lodge, Rock Lodge, Forest Lodge, Vlei Lodge, Zuka Lodge and Phinda Homestead
  • Activities: Game drives; game walks; bird watching; community experience; rhino, elephant or pangolin research experience; optional beach excursion

3. uMkhuze Game Reserve

Plains Zebra drinking at uMkhuze Game Reserve

uMkhuze Game Reserve is part of a mosaic of protected areas that comprise iSimangaliso Wetland Park, South Africa’s first UNESCO World Heritage Site. There is a network of roads to explore, but the thick coastal vegetation doesn’t make for easy wildlife viewing. Spending time in the reserve’s photographic hides, on the other hand, is hugely rewarding. You’re literally in the middle of a waterhole when sitting in the stilted kuMasinga hide. You don’t need patience to spend a couple of hours here. You can expect a constant stream of animals coming to drink including zebras, wildebeest, warthogs, elephants and rhinos. With some luck you’ll even witness a pack of wild dogs or a pride of lions disturbing the peace.

  • Distance from Durban: 3½ hours
  • Accommodation options: Mantuma Rest Camp has a variety of accommodation options, including safari tents and self-catering chalets. Ghost Mountain Inn, located about 30 minutes away, offers more luxurious hotel accommodation.
  • Activities: Game drives, game walks, photography from wildlife hides, fig forest walk, bird watching

4. Ithala Game Reserve

Giraffe with calf at Ithala game Reserve

Little-known Ithala is perhaps the most scenic of all the game reserves near Durban. Although not a Big 5 destination (lions are absent), there is a fair amount of wildlife around, including both black and white rhino. The mountainous terrain with associated cliff faces and rocky river beds is prime territory for leopards. Other predators to look out for are cheetah and brown hyena. There is a big variety of antelope including some unusual species such as eland, red hartebeest and tsessebe, the fastest antelope in Africa.

  • Distance from Durban: 4½ hours
  • Accommodation options: Inside the reserve, Ntshondwe Camp offers self-catering and non-self-catering chalets. There is no private lodging in or nearby the reserve.
  • Activities: Game drives, game walks, bird watching

5. Tembe Elephant Park

Tembe Elephants under a tree

Tembe Elephant Park is a Big 5 reserve, but it’s really the elephants that steal the show here. Tembe was established in 1983 to protect what was then the last free-ranging population of elephants in South Africa. The remaining herd consisted of 150 individuals, many of which carried huge tusks. The gene has obviously survived, as Tembe is still known for its massive tuskers. Seeing one of these giants at close quarters is an unforgettable experience. The variety of habitats including the special sand forest is home to many Zululand specials such as the shy suni antelope and the cheeky samango monkey.

  • Distance from Durban: 5 hours
  • Accommodation options: The only accommodation in the park is the community-run Tembe Tented Camp which offers all-inclusive packages with meals and game drives
  • Activities: Game drives, game walks, photography from an elevated wildlife hide, cultural experiences

Tembe Safaris

6. Zulu Nyala Private Game Reserve

Zulu Nyala Safari

Bordering the upmarket Phinda Game Reserve, Zulu Nyala is an altogether more affordable option. It mainly supports the same animals, although there are no lions in Zulu Nyala. Your guide will take you out twice daily on exciting game drives in an open safari vehicle. This is the best way to get close to animals, but mix it up with a walking safari for a different but equally thrilling experience. Zulu Nyala is also a good base to explore other natural and cultural attractions of the area. Several optional day trips including the popular St Lucia estuary boat tour are available.

  • Accommodation options: Zulu Nyala Game Lodge is the only lodge in the reserve offering well-appointed air-conditioned rooms and safari tents
  • Activities: Game drives; game walks; Zulu cultural experience, optional day trips to iSimangaliso Wetland Park and other nearby reserves and attractions

7. Nambiti Private Game Reserve

Lion at Nambiti Game Reserve

Nambiti GR is a popular breakaway from Durban because of its relatively reasonable lodge prices. It is also perfectly located as a halfway stop between Durban and Johannesburg, and only a stone’s throw away from the majestic Drakensberg Mountains. With its grassland habitat, typical of its highveld location, Nambiti has quite a different feel compared to the other KwaZulu Natal reserves with their lush coastal vegetation. There is a good selection of private lodges within the reserve all offering game drives in open safari vehicles and informative bush walks. Aside from the Big 5, more than 40 other mammal species are present. One of the more interesting inhabitants is the serval, a medium-sized cat rarely seen in other South African reserves.

  • Accommodation options: There are nine independent lodges inside Nambiti GR, including six 5-star game lodges and two tented camps. Facilities range from luxury to self-catering.
  • Activities: Game drives and game walks

Entendre les animaux la nuit et se réveiller le matin avec des antilopes près des ouvertures est quelque chose de passionnant. The Big Five, as well as wild dog, giraffe, cheetah, and nyala, may be found in this KwaZulu-Natal Game Reserve, which covers over 96 000 hectares of rugged terrain. Take a game drive and guided walk, or go for a self-guided stroll along the auto trails.

Game Reserves In Durban

Phinda Private Game Reserve

Near Durban, Phinda is the most well-known and prestigious private wildlife reserve. Staying in one of the six luxury lodges is an experience in and of itself, with the emphasis on subtle elegance and great food. The guiding at Phinda is of the highest calibre, and a safari here is not only fun but also educational. Expect close-up interactions with a variety of species, both large and small, as well as some action. The cheetah is Phinda’s most famous species, and this is one of the greatest sites to see this elegant big cat in action, whether grooming, nursing young, or hunting at breakneck speed.

uMkhuze Game Reserve

The uMkhuze Game Reserve is part of the iSimangaliso Wetland Park, South Africa’s first UNESCO World Heritage Site, which is made up of a mosaic of protected areas. There is a network of roads to explore, although animal viewing is difficult due to the dense coastal vegetation. On the other side, spending time in the reserve’s photographic hides is extremely rewarding. When you sit in the stilted kuMasinga hide, you’re practically sitting in the centre of a waterhole. Spending a couple of hours here does not require patience. Zebras, wildebeest, warthogs, elephants, and rhinos are among the creatures that frequent the watering hole. With any luck, you’ll even see a pack of wild dogs or a pride of lions causing havoc.

This game reserve is one of the top game reserves in Durban.

Beachwood Mangrove Nature Reserve

The Beachwood Mangrove Nature Reserve is found near Durban North, at the mouth of the Umgeni River. In 1977, the reserve was established to safeguard 76 hectares of natural estuarine systems, including mangrove swamp forest and estuarine habitat. An activity centre and a thatched gazebo are located in the reserve’s southern section, near the Umgeni estuary, and are available to educational and other organisations.

There is a boardwalk that meanders through the mangrove forest, providing the ideal opportunity to see animals and explore the adjacent estuary; you might even see some of the numerous crabs that are supposed to live in the region.

Durban places

Paradise Valley Nature Reserve

The observation platform for the waterfall is just beyond the Duiker trail turnoff. It’s worth climbing the stone steps to the bottom of the falls, where there’s a wide pool, but don’t swim there; the water quality of the Umbilo River isn’t great. Return to the same track and follow the yellow markings to where the Duiker trail enters. A small pond and the old waterworks slipway are located along the trail. The trail curves right when it reaches the massive yellowwood tree, returning you to the wooden bridge where you began.

The Paradise Valley Nature Reserve, 100 hectares of coastal and remnant grassland, boasts one of the two national monuments to be found in Pinetown – The Umbilo Waterworks, which were built in 1887. All four of the trails in the reserve start at the Interpretive Centre and head down through the picnic area.

Durban Botanical Gardens

Durban Botanical Gardens

The Durban Botanic Gardens (founded in 1849) is Africa’s oldest surviving botanic garden, and it continues to be a national and local city asset dedicated to plant conservation and education. In 1993, the Durban Botanic Gardens Trust was founded to assist the Gardens’ major strategic areas of biodiversity, culture, education, heritage, horticulture, people and plants, and research. The Durban Botanic Gardens is situated in the heart of the Berea, on the east coast of KwaZulu-Natal and it’s 15 hectare botanic garden

The Durban Botanical Gardens work alongside the  University of Technology’s Horticulture  department to provide a solid curriculum-based, hands-on educational experience. It is a sub-tropical paradise.

Umhlanga Nature Reserve

The trail starts in the parking lot and leads you on an interesting journey through varied terrain. The wooden boardwalk brings you across the Ohlange River, through a dense forest, and out onto the sand, with the gorgeous lagoon on one side and the ocean on the other.

A clandestine naked splash can be had on a quiet, less-frequented beach. Umhlanga will not let you down, whether you’re going to the beach or just for a wonderful walk.

The reserve also includes the Drakensberg Mountains (commonly known as the “Dragon Mountains”), Limpopo’s tallest mountain range. If you want to tackle one of the more challenging mountain hiking trails, make sure you hire a guide.

Best Game Reserves in KZN: The Most Romantic Getaways in South Africa

Plotting a romantic getaway in South Africa’s KwaZulu Natal? If a romantic bush break is on the bucket list, these are just a few of my favorite game reserves in KZN to check out!

KwaZulu Natal is easily one of the most alluring regions of South Africa. With mountainscapes that last for days, dry savannah, untouched beaches, and unparalleled cultural heritage, it’s hard to beat the beauty this area of the country has to offer already, but when you throw in the wildlife, the hiking opportunities, and the nearby coastal resorts, it’s easy to forget there are other destinations in the country at all.

With that said, I rounded up a list of the best safari lodges and game reserves in KZN that need to be on your bucket list for a romantic getaway. From Big Five reserves to underwater worlds, these are just a few of the luxury natural wonders in KwaZulu Natal that need to be on your bucket list!

The best game reserves in KZN for a romantic getaway:

Thanda game reserve.

Thanda means love in isiZulu language, and this game reserve is one of the best places for a romantic getaway in KZN, if not entire South Africa.

With a deep commitment to wildlife conservation and Zulu culture, this 14000-hectare private reserve is one of the best game reserves near Durban to visit if you’re looking for a big 5 safari experience in KwaZulu Natal that combines unequaled luxury, cultural immersion, and unparalleled cuisine.

Where? Situated some 260 kilometers north of Durban and a stone’s throw away from Saint Lucia Wetlands, this luxury game lodge is accessible by car from Durban, or you can fly directly to the reserve or to Phina Airstrip.

Where to stay? Thanda is privately owned by Thanda, so there are only three different accommodation options: Thanda’s private villa for families or large groups, Thanda Lodge, and Thanda Tented Camp. You can read all about my stay in Thanda Safari here or book your stay + safari here .

Manyoni Game Reserve

Being one of the largest privately-owned game reserves in KZN, Manyoni’s wildlife sightings are unparalleled. This game reserve is renowned for its incredible game viewing, culturally rich traditions, and astounding conservation history.

Manyoni Game Reserve is also a prime spot to see rhinos in their natural habitat, as the reserve was confirmed as a release site for the WWF Black Rhino Expansion Project. In 2005, tons of black rhinos were brought into their new homes, so if seeing real-life unicorns during your safari getaway in South Africa is on the list, Manyoni Game Reserve is probably the best place to do that!

Where? Manyoni is in the heart of Zululand only 3 hours from Durban and 6 hours from Johannesburg.

Where to stay? Manyoni is home to a range of luxury safari lodges. I recommend staying at Rhino River Lodge , a cozy game lodge set right in the heart of the reserve.

Phinda Private Game Reserve

Encompassing almost 29 thousand hectares of protected wildlife land in KwaZulu-Natal, &Beyond Phinda is another amazing Big Five Game reserve in KZN that you must visit! Thanks to its close proximity to the unspoiled coast of Zululand, a getaway to Phinda means you’ll get to combine the best of both worlds in one trip.

Phinda is home to all the big five, but its especially loved by visitors for its iconic close encounters with cheetahs and black rhinos. While here, you’ll get to experience game drives in open 4×4 safari vehicles as well as choose from a wide range of optional excursions in the bush and on the beach.

Where? This private game reserve is located in KwaZulu Natal between the Mkuze Game Reserve and the Greater St. Lucia Wetlands.

Where to stay? Phinda boasts six game lodges – Mountain Lodge, Rock Lodge, Forest Lodge, Vlei Lodge, Zuka Lodge and Phinda Homestead.

Nambiti Private Game Reserve

Set just a short drive away from the majestic Drakensberg Mountains, Nambiti is the only game reserve in the area the elusive Big Five call their home. Offering a thrilling diversity of wildlife encounters and unparalleled landscapes, Nambiti is one of the best game reserves in KZN to visit for those who live closer to Johannesburg or Pretoria.

Aside from the Big 5, Nambiti is also home to over 40 other species of game including cheetah, hippo, giraffe, hyena, zebra and offers some of the most beautiful and romantic game lodges in KZN.

Where? Nambiti Private Game Reserve is located in a malaria-free area near the town of Ladysmith, a three and a half-hour drive from Johannesburg or a two and a half-hour drive from Durban.

Where to stay? Nambiti is home to nine luxurious game lodges, including six 5-star lodges and two tented camps to suit any budget and travel style. Our favorite for a romantic getaway from Johannesburg is the Nambiti Plains Game Lodge, and you can book your stay here.

Thula Thula Private Game Reserve

Thula Thula means “peace and tranquility” in Zulu, and that’s exactly what you can expect when planning a getaway to this game reserve.

Where? Set in the heart of Zululand, Thula Thula Game Reserve is set just a two and a half-hour drive from Durban.

Where to stay? Thula Thula private game reserve offers two accommodation options: Elephant Safari Lodge (known for its amazing food choices) and Luxury Tented Camp for an authentic bush experience. Book your stay here .

Amakhosi Private Game Reserve

Amakhosi is probably one of the lesser-known game reserves in KZN. A visit to his little gem of a place welcomes you with some of the most spectacular landscapes KwaZulu Natal has to offer. Think of a day spent chasing game with grasslands stretching to the south and mountains peeking from the horizon to complete the view.

While Amakhosi is known for its big game, there are many smaller creatures to be found here that are just as fascinating – over four hundred species of birds call this game reserve their home, making it one of the best destinations in KZN for birth watchers.

Where? The Amakhosi Private Game Reserve + game lodge is located 2.5 hours away from St. Lucia Wetlands and Sodwana Bay.

Where to stay? The Amakhosi Safari Lodge is situated inside the reserve and provides for a perfect romantic getaway in the bush. Book your stay here.

Pakamisa Private Game Reserve

Pakamisa means “to lift up” in Zulu and this game reserve known for being the home to smaller animals in a tranquil setting. Another quirk that makes Pakamisa special is their unique collection of Arabian Horses, all trained to take guests on a thrilling horseback safari.

Pakamisa is predator and malaria-free, which makes it one of the best game reserves in KZN to visit for those traveling with children.

Where? Pakamisa Game Reserve is located in northern KwaZulu Natal, just on the border of Swaziland .

Where to stay?   Book your stay here.

Tembe Elephant Park

It’s said that the largest elephants in the world can be found at Tembe National Elephant Park, so if an intimate encounter with nature’s giants is what you’re after, you’re bound to find it at this game reserve. Tembe is also the third biggest game reserve in KZN, so you’ll be game driving your way through diverse landscapes: from sand forest to swamp, and savannah.

Aside from its incredible elephant population (some of which are indeed the biggest living tuskers), this game reserve in KZN is also home to the Big Five as well as other animals and plants.

Where to stay? Tempe offers overnight guests safari-style luxury tents with private outdoor showers. You can book your stay here.

Don’t forget to get travel insurance for your trip! As always, I recommend Safety Wing for great prices and coverage abroad. It starts at only $45 USD per month and will have you covered with everything you may need during your trip! Check them out here .

Saint Lucia Wetlands and Marine Reserve

If a relaxing weekend spent on a boat is more your type of getaway, then St Lucia Wetlands is one of the best nature reserves to visit for you. Not only is St Lucia a World Heritage site, but it’s also home to a complex network of natural habitats and boasts some of the most incredible coral reefs, coastal forests, and open estuaries South Africa has to offer.

Of course, this post is all about wildlife encounters in KwaZulu Natal, and St Lucia has got a lot of those, too! From hippos to hungry crocodiles, a ton of animals call this marine reserve their home, so you’re guaranteed a few sightings while cruising around the area.

https://goo.gl/maps/QNcrV647h3f7naas7

Ithala Game Reserve

Ithala is one of the newest game reserves in KZN and its fastly gaining popularity thanks to its unbeatable wildlife sightings backdropped by the beauty of the Ngotshe Mountains, which create some of the most beautiful landscapes in the region.

Home to four of the Big Five (except for lions), Ithala offers visitors a wonderful geological and historical experience as a bonus. The area where the reserve now sits has been occupied by humans for thousands of years, and tools like stone-age spears have been found here. Moreover, Ithala is home to rock formations that date back three thousand millions years ago (!).

Where to stay? Ithala offers five different accommodation options for all budgets. To read more about each, head over here.

What a shame that you have not included any public game reserves within KwaZulu Natal. Hluhluwe-Imfolozi Game Reserve being the oldest proclaimed park in Africa and what with its incredible history of saving the Rhino from near extinction. Then South Africa’s very first world heritage site, iSimangaliso Wetland Park, Mkuze Game Reserve, and the list goes on and on.

Might it be due to not being high priced high commissioned sites?

I haven’t been 🙂 Feel free to email me more info on them and I’ll gladly add them to make this post better! [email protected]

I agree with you Quentin. Some of the BEST wildlife experiences are when you travel on your own in a smaller type reserve (not private). Like Weenen Game reserve for example. Daniela, I would definitely recommend you include all the smaller non-private reserves. Well said Quentin

Do you have any more recs for places to go? Would love to include a section here on smaller reserves for independent travel 🙂

thanks for sharing such a great post https://www.trueugandasafaris.com/

We went on an evening drive in October 2014. It was just such an unforgettable experience. The professionalism of the guide that took us, Theo, his expertise and amazing ability to spot even the smallest animal and regale us with interesting and witty facts about the most seemingly insignificant animals was charming and impressive! He pointed out snakes, spiders, chameleons, and the smallest of duikers, but the absolute highlight of the drive was the leopard! We were so lucky to encounter a feeding leopard, and we spent about 15 minutes just gazing in awe from about 3-5 meters away as the magnificent animal seemed quite unconcerned by our intrusive curiosity and he took his own leisurely time to finish his meal. Awesome stuff!! Thank you Theo, thank you Heritage Tours and Safaris! [/one_half] [one_half_last]

What a fantastic organised trip.

The guides were first class (knowlegeable, friendly and wicked sense of humour) , the meals delicious and the wildlife outstanding.

We stayed at Umlilo Lodge for 2 nights which was brilliant. Comfortable with delicious breakfast and extremely friendly staff.

The entire Heritage experience was outstanding from the ladies in the office going through our itinerary, being picked up at the hotel to all all the excursions.

I cannot recommend it enough – brilliant holiday. [/one_half_last]

3 Day Durban Safari what to bring along:

Light clothing for any safari is essential, a wind breaker that is also water proof, always ensure that you have a dust proof back pack for those camera lenses, batteries and memory cards. A zip lock bag remains as essential for all of those valuables. Africa always looks as if it wont rain however more often than most it will rain make sure that you are prepared. Please do not wear brightly coloured clothing on your Safari its almost the same as having crosshairs on your back. When coming across any sighting please do remain calm, sit quietly and listen to your ranger. He has years of experience and will at all times ensure your safety comes first. A hat and sunblock is truly needed during the Summer months, each game drive truck has extra bottled water please keep your self hydrated at all times.

Wildlife Wonderland: Best Game Reserves in South Africa

Looking for the Top South Africa Game Reserves? You have come to the right place. Read on.

Traveling to Africa to see the epic wildlife is a bucket-list item for a lot of people. South Africa is the perfect destination.

The continent’s southernmost country can show you the best of Africa. From the cosmopolitan city of Cape Town to the wilds of the far northern region of Kruger National Park, it doesn’t get any better.

You’ll find a wide variety of spectacular South Africa game reserves. Each one offers you a unique and amazing wildlife experience. It can be tough to choose just one of them!

Here you’ll get an overview of South Africa’s best game reserves. Find out what animals you might catch a glimpse of and what each park offers.

Hopefully, you have time to take in more than one. Read on, and see what you think!

Top South Africa Game Reserves

South Africa is home to some of the most spectacular game reserves. They offer incredible wildlife experiences and a variety of accommodations. All are Big 5 reserves.

In this section, we’ll explore a few of the best game reserves that you should consider visiting.

Kruger National Park

Kruger National Park is one of Africa’s largest and most famous game reserves. It’s located in northeastern South Africa, and spans an area of about 19,485 km² (7,523 miles²).

The size of the park allows for a variety of landscapes and experiences. The topography, as well as the available amenities, varies quite a lot as you travel from south to north.

You’ll find the south to be more diverse and hilly. Open savannah grasslands cover the central region, with rugged mopane woodlands in the north.

Wildlife concentration varies accordingly. The entire park offers opportunities for unbelievable sightings. However, the southern areas of the park tend to have higher concentrations of animals.

But the number of people is more concentrated here too. The number of shops, accommodations, and amenities follows suit. People and conveniences become fewer the farther north you travel.

Kruger Park has a perfect spot for you, whatever sort of experience you’re looking for. You’ll find camps and rest camps that offer a range of accommodations, including campsites, chalets, and luxury lodges .

The southern camps generally have the more developed infrastructure. More restaurants, shops, and facilities for visitors. If you spend your time in the northern reaches, you’ll see more of wild Africa, and less of the people who come to see them. This is where I like to hang out.

If you’ll be in the northeast part of South Africa, Kruger is definitely a game reserve to consider. This is especially true if it’s your first time to Africa, and dream of self-drive safaris.

YOU MIGHT ALSO LIKE THIS: The Perfect Itinerary for 5 days in Cape Town

Sabi Sands Game Reserve

Adjacent to Kruger National Park, Sabi Sands Game Reserve is thought by some to be the best game reserve in South Africa.

Sabi Sands is known for its exclusivity and incredible wildlife sightings. This reserve stands out as one of the most famous private game reserves in the country.

It’s also known as one of the best areas to spot the elusive African leopard.

Sabi Sands shares an unfenced border with Kruger, allowing animals to roam freely between the two areas. It offers a more exclusive experience than Kruger, with limited visitors and no self-drive safaris.

The northern area of Sabi Sands is where you’ll find the more budget friendly accommodations. The southern section leans more towards luxury, perfect if you’re after a more pampered getaway.

Some lodges even offer spa services, and may have curio shops as well. A few even sell local crafts – lovely for gifts and souvenirs of your trip.

Wherever you stay in this South Africa game reserve, you’ll be in for great wildlife sightings.

Madikwe Game Reserve

Another remarkable reserve worth exploring is Madikwe Game Reserve. It’s the fifth largest in South Africa at 750 km² (290 m²) and offers exceptional wildlife and breathtaking scenery.

Located near the border of Botswana, Madikwe is also known for its efforts in wildlife conservation and rehabilitation. Madikwe is a Big 5 game reserve, but is especially famous for its population of critically endangered wild dogs.

This makes it an excellent choice for those wanting a unique wildlife experience. No self-drive safaris, though.

Madikwe has a varied selection of accommodations. You have your choice from luxury lodges to comfortable bush camps, and lots in between. You can find spa and wellness treatments here too.

A variety of game drives and wildlife viewing options are available through your accommodations, as well.

An added bonus of Madikwe is that it’s considered completely malaria-free.

Hluhluwe-Imfolozi Game Reserve

Hluhluwe-Imfolozi Game Reserve is located on the eastern side of South Africa. It’s less than 2 hours drive north of the town of Durban, and covers about 960 km² ( 370 miles²).

HiP, as it’s known, is the oldest official nature reserve in Africa. Aside from its Big 5 population and rich wildlife sightings, people love it for its conservation efforts.

It’s thanks to these efforts that HiP has one of the largest white rhino populations on the planet. Endangered black rhinos also roam the park, and are always a thrill to see on a self-drive safari.

Accommodations in Hluhluwe-Imfolozi range from luxury lodges to camping. You can choose from self-catering chalets and campsites, catering to different preferences and budgets.

Many of these accommodations offer amenities like restaurants and swimming pools. You can join guided game drives, or wander out on the walking trails. You’ll get to immerse yourself in the natural beauty of the reserve. I can never get enough of these walking trails.

Hluhluwe-Imfolozi is less than an hour from the fun coastal town of St. Lucia . It makes a great day trip if you’d prefer to stay in town.

TOUR SUGGESTION: Spend a full day on a safari in the magical Hluhluwe-Umfolozi Park on this spectacular tour from Durban.

Shamwari Game Reserve

Shamwari is an award-winning private reserve that focuses on conservation and responsible tourism. It’s a smaller park at 250 km² (97 miles²), and an easy hour’s drive northeast of Port Elizabeth,

As well as the Big 5, Shamwari is home to rare species like the black rhino and the elusive cape leopard. This is another great chance for you to have an unforgettable wildlife experience.

If your African safari dreams include world-class luxury accommodations, then Shamwari should be on your shortlist. Several options are available, and you can’t go wrong with any of them.

You can even get a sneak preview of what natural wonders Shamwari has to offer. It has been the subject of a few film series.

Additional Game Reserve Destinations

In addition to the well-known South Africa game reserves, there are several other exciting destinations worth exploring while you’re here. These are lesser known options, and tend to be smaller in area as well.

Manyeleti Game Reserve

At the Manyeleti Game Reserve, you’ll find a more exclusive and personal safari experience. Like Sabi Sands Game Reserve, Manyeleti borders Kruger National Park, sitting on 200 km² (77 miles²).

It offers exceptional wildlife sightings, including the Big 5. This small reserve, with only 3 lodges on site, is something of a hidden gem. One that will soon feel like your dream home.

Away from the crowds of larger parks and reserves, you can enjoy peaceful game drives. You’ll have the chance to spot leopards, cheetahs, and other animals, and have them all to yourselves.

With no fence between Manyeleti and Kruger, you’ll have access to the same wildlife, in a more private setting.

Kariega Game Reserve

A private, family owned Big-5 reserve, Kariega is found along South Africa’s famous Garden Route. It sits amid a landscape of rolling hills, dense bushes, and river valleys.

Here you have the choice of 5 luxury lodges, including the Homestead, a private 7-bedroom chalet. The Homestead is ideal if you’re traveling with a group.

The beaches of Kenton-on-Sea are just 15 minutes away from the 100 km² (37 mile²) reserve. Kariega lets you enjoy the best of both worlds – ideal if you’re having trouble deciding between a safari and a beach vacation.

You can even make it a part of a Garden Route excursion. And the reserve is considered malaria-free!

Aquila Game Reserve

The Aquila Reserve is just 2 hours from Cape Town, the Mother City. Aquila is about the same size as Kariega, and makes a great addition to a visit to the wine region of Franschhoek.

If you’re staying in Cape Town, you can still see Africa’s epic wildlife while you’re in the area. Aquila is perfect for a day trip.

But if you prefer a more immersive experience, Aquila is still a great choice. Stay at the premier lodge, or at one of the luxury cottages built around the resort.

The Tranquila Spa on the property is almost as big a draw as the game drives. But the wildlife will be the most memorable part of your visit.

Choose between half-day or full-day safaris .

~ This is a really great round-trip tour with a Game Drive from Capetown to Aquila.

Exploring South Africa’s Wildlife

South Africa is home to an abundance of iconic wildlife. It’s a popular destination for wildlife enthusiasts from all over the world.

The many game reserves scattered across the country offer plenty of opportunities to discover the animals. Here’s a brief glimpse of what’s in store for you in the incredible African wilderness.

The Big Five

One of the main attractions of a South African safari is the chance to spot the famous “Big 5”. These are lions, leopards, rhinos, buffalos, and elephants.

These spectacular animals are among the most sought-after species in African wildlife.

Lions are often found in prides and are known for their powerful presence and deafening roars. As the king of the animal kingdom, they inspire both respect and awe.

Leopards are elusive and stealthy predators, and they’re a challenge to spot. Catching a glimpse of one is a breathtaking experience.

If you’re really lucky, you’ll get to see a display of their stunning strength as they pull a prey animal into a tree.

Rhinos can be found in two varieties in South Africa – the white rhino and the critically endangered black rhino. These massive herbivores have an incredible prehistoric appearance. It’s fascinating to watch them graze and interact with each other.

Buffalo herds are commonly found roaming the grasslands and forests. These huge, strong, and highly sociable animals are an important part of the African ecosystem.

Last but not least, the gentle giants of the land, elephants are highly intelligent and incredibly social creatures. They’ll provide you with unforgettable moments if you’re lucky enough to observe them up close.

South Africa’s wildlife doesn’t end there. You might also come across cheetahs , rare African wild dogs , and even the elusive white lions on your journey. Even the birdlife in South Africa is legendary.

Safari Experiences and Activities

There are a few different ways to experience the wonders of South Africa game reserves. Try to participate in as many of these as you can!

Game Drives

Guided game drives through South Africa’s beautiful landscapes let you cover the most ground. Your guides are expert game spotters with a wealth of knowledge about the animals.

Don’t forget to bring your camera. These game drives provide plenty of opportunities to capture stunning photos of your adventures.

Walking Safaris

Get closer to your surroundings by participating in walking safaris. Here, expert guides will lead you through the African wilderness, teaching you about local plants, animals, and ecosystems.

With your feet on the ground, you’ll have a better chance of spotting smaller creatures. It’s a great chance to feel truly connected to the environment.

River Cruises and Canoeing

For a serene and relaxing experience, consider taking a river cruise along South Africa’s waterways. You’ll witness incredible birdlife, crocodiles, and hippos while soaking in the natural beauty of your surroundings.

If you prefer a more active approach, some reserves also offer canoeing and kayaking options. These allow you to gently paddle yourself through the water. With or without a guide depends on where you are. Kariega is a great spot to go canoeing.

Of course, remember to always follow the safety guidelines provided by your guides while enjoying these activities. This will not only ensure your safety, but also protect the wildlife and their habitats.

Embrace as many of these wonderful safari experiences in South Africa as you have time for.

In Conclusion: South Africa Game Reserves

South Africa is a treasure trove of beautiful game reserves. They lure and captivate the hearts of wildlife enthusiasts and nature lovers from around the world.

Each reserve offers a unique and unforgettable experience, from the iconic Kruger National Park to the remarkable Hluhluwe-Imfolozi Game Reserve.
