Fitzroy Island is one of the most unspoilt islands adjacent to the Great Barrier Reef. Fitzroy Island National Park is a mountainous rainforest oasis surrounded by fringing reef formations.

The reef surrounding Fitzroy Island is a “Fringing Reef”. Fitzroy Island is located on the Inner Barrier of the Central Region of the Great Barrier Reef. It is part of the Great Barrier Reef World Heritage Area.

For those who like a sleep-in, our half day Great Barrier Reef tour package provides a more efficient way of exploring Fitzroy Island. With a later departure time of 11.00am our mode of transport will have you disembarking at the shores of Fitzroy Island only 45 minutes after pushing off from the Reef Fleet Terminal.

Check in at 10:30am for an 11.00am departure and prepare yourself for a lovely day on this tropical island!

What Can You Do On Fitzroy Island?

With so much to see and do on Fitzroy Island, make the most of your half day tour by pre-booking your preferred activities.

Activities on Fitzroy Island

Fitzroy Island is a national park, boasting incredible, unspoilt natural beauty. The diverse landscape, of granite outcrops, rainforest, open woodlands, mangroves and coral beaches, means there are a number of unique exploratory walks you can do around the island.  

You might choose to climb the 269m to the summit (2.5 hours), with its breathtaking views of the island and mainland. Or the lighthouse trek (1.5 hours), Secret Garden or Nudey Beach tracks could be a more suitable option – these are graded moderate in their difficulty. 

Alternatively, relax on the beach and swim in the clear, calm waters. If you haven’t pre-ordered a packed picnic lunch, there is the option of Foxy’s Bar on the island for a meal and a cocktail.

Take a Trip to the Turtles

You can’t visit Fitzroy without visiting the Fitzroy Island campus of the Cairns Turtle Rehabilitation Centre. Run completely by volunteers it’s a non-profit organisation dedicated to the rehabilitation of sick and injured sea turtles.

The Great Barrier Reef is home to six of the world’s seven species of marine turtles and several these are seriously threatened.

The educational tours run at 1.00pm and 2.00pm every day. As a Half Day guest, the 1.00pm tour option is for you so book as soon as you arrive at the General Store on the island as spots are limited to 15 people per tour.

Ferry Return to Cairns

Check-in for your return fast boat to Cairns is at 1.45pm sharp so all equipment must be returned by 1.30pm. Departing at 2.00pm, the ferry boat should have you back in Cairns within 45 minutes for you to return to your hotle or get ready to explore some of the city sights.

The Fitzroy day cruise is a 6 hour guided tour of Fitzroy island. It operates from Cairns in North Queensland and the island is a 45 minute ride from there.

8 AM to 3 PM; 8 AM to 5 PM; 10 AM to 5 PM; 10 AM to 7 PM; and 11 AM to 5 PM.

There are mainly 2 types of day cruises- the full day cruise and the half day cruise. The full day cruise is a 6 hour guided tour and the half day tour is a 3.5 hour guided tour.

Fitzroy island is located 29 kilometres south-east of Cairns and is only 45 minutes by ferry. All of our day trips depart from the Reef Fleet Terminal in Cairns City.

Ferry Options from Cairns

Fitzroy Flyer The Flyer is a large & modern catamaran which departs Cairns 3 - 5 times daily. When booking the flyer you can add extras such as snorkeling equipment and glass bottom boat tours.

The Fitzroy Flyer is ideal for resort guests who need to book the ferry one way or return with different departure dates.

Things To Do On Fitzroy Island

Enjoy the abundance of activities available on the Island from the Dive and Adventures Centre including kayaking, snorkelling, glass bottom boat tours and paddle boarding (charges apply).

If you are looking for something more relaxed, simply soak up some sun on the beach and go for a swim in the surf. If you are the adventuring type go for one of the free self-guided walks through the secret garden in the Rainforest or challenge yourself with a walk to the Summit Lighthouse.

The Island also offers fish feeding at 11:30am and 4:00pm daily from the Jetty.

The ferry ride over to Fitzroy Island was good - we enjoyed it, but the island had uneven terrain, including walking on coral and as we both have mobility issues, this tour was inappropriate for us. Also, the beach had coral, not sand, and was on a steep angle. Even the eating area was not open, so we went back early rather than being in pain for a further three and a half hours. For Fitzroy Island hikes, you need to have the warning that a reasonably high level of fitness is required, in your marketing material.

We had a great time at Fitzroy Island. Nudey Beach was spectacular. The food for lunch was nice, a bit expensive but you would expect that on an island. The only thing we would suggest is better signage to direct you to access the different beaches eg Nudey Beach. The signage was rather poor.
