Rayburn Tours launches new Geography trips to Iceland

2017-06-08T16:36:28+01:00

Iceland

Tour operator, Rayburn Tours, is introducing new school trips to Iceland in order to give more pupils the chance of exploring the world outside the classroom.

Schools can pick from three Icelandic tour packages that cater for different needs, learning objectives and subjects.

What packages can schools book?

The first of the packages is the Essential Iceland trip which is a four day excursion combining visits to the country’s most spectacular geographical sites. This will include the Golden Circle tour’s spurting geysers, the Sólheimajökull glacier and the black sand and basalt column cliffs at Reynisfjara.

The itinerary for this trip encompasses thundering waterfalls, ancient volcanoes and geo-thermal lagoons, allowing Iceland’s marvels to be admired from every angle.

The next trip school groups can book is the Set Departure Iceland package which is better suited for smaller groups of pupils. This is also a four day trip and will investigate the power of water along the South Coast and will visit the Eyjafjallajöll Visitor Centre and the less known Secret Lagoon, one of Iceland’s hot springs.

The third package is the tailor-made Iceland trip which involves the itinerary and tour experience being crafted around each individual school group’s learning requirements and needs.

Each Iceland tour has been designed to tie in with the National Curriculum.

Geography topics that the trips to Iceland can incorporate include Changing Places, Climate Change, Ecosystems and Biodiversity and Natural Hazards, among many others.

More information about Rayburn Tours

Rayburn Tours is an independent, family-run business that has been creating tailor-made international experiences for groups since 1965.

It also runs educational trips to other countries such as Morocco and Sicily. The operator can accommodate for school groups studying other subjects such as History and Business Studies.

Thingvellir National P...

Thingvellir National Park & Mid-Atlantic Ridge

One of the few places on earth where the Mid Atlantic Ridge is visible above sea level, explore the theory of plate tectonics in Thingvellir National Park as you venture between the rifts in the earth’s crust at the boundary of the Eurasian and North American tectonic plates.

Thingvellir National Park

Journey to the incredible Geysir Geothermal Area, part of the Golden Circle, where the main attraction is the spectacular Strokkur Geysir which erupts every 8-10 minutes. Home to various other hot springs, bubbling mud pools and lively eruptions, you’ll also find the Great Geysir which can eject steam up to 80 metres in the air.

Geysir Geothermal Area

With various viewing platforms around the two-tiered waterfall, as well as wooden boardwalks and information boards, you’ll see Gullfoss’ powerful water plummeting 32 metres down into its gorge, with walls that reach up to 70 metres high. When the sun is shining, you can see a shimmering rainbow curving over the falls.

Reynisfjara Black Sand...

Reynisfjara Black Sand Beach

Near the village of Vík lies Reynisfjara black basalt beach. Take a relaxing stroll along the pebbly beach and see the impressive basalt columns in all their glory. Created by the cooling of lava, these pipe-like columns are incredible to witness. Encourage your students to feel the polished pebbles in their fingers to really understand attrition.

Reynisfjara Black Sand Beach

Blue Lagoon

The Blue Lagoon is an extensive lagoon of mineral-rich, geothermally-heated sea water. White silica in suspension in the water gives the lagoon an opaque appearance, whilst the blue-green algae provide the aquamarine colouration. Relax in the well maintained 37°C water and enjoy its saunas, steam baths, silica mud pots and a tumbling massage waterfall.

Ice Cream Farm

Visit Efstidalur II, a family-run working farm and home to some of the tastiest ice cream in Iceland. Vik Village

The charming village of Vík is the southernmost village in Iceland and whilst it’s small in size, it’s big in natural beauties! As you explore, you’ll find truly unique landscapes, picturesque scenery and brilliant black basalt beaches. Stop at the cafe or visit the woollen shop and pick up an authentic Icelandic souvenir.

Dyrholaey Peninsula

Iceland’s Atlantic coastline experiences powerful winter storms which dramatically attack the coastal edge. At Dyrhólaey, cliff development and retreat can be witnessed, with arch and stack development on headlands. Be sure to keep your eyes open as puffins are summer visitors, nesting in burrows on top of the cliffs.

Find the answers to some of our most frequently asked questions.

Yes, a 24-hour emergency phone number will be provided in your final documents pack and one of our experienced members of staff will be happy to help with any problems you have whilst out on tour.

We have numerous, well researched alternative excursions which can be implemented if needed whilst in Iceland. Additionally, we have produced a new study unit relating to the volcanic eruption in 2010. Experience has shown us that with some minor changes we are able to carry out the majority of our itineraries.

In Iceland every community, by law, has a set of very rigid logistical procedures in place to deal with natural disasters and these have proven to be effective. The whole of Iceland is hazard aware. There are systems in place and sequences of events all worked out. Systems are robust and vigorous. Safety procedures are only stepped down after a full assessment is carried out by the experts.

In addition, we have local knowledge and direct communication to the safety authorities to ensure a calm, efficient evacuation to safety, if required. We also have access to accommodation in different locations. We have 24-hour contact available to both Icelandic airlines and we have experienced the high level of support they offer during the repatriation process.

Our main accommodation centres are contracted solely to us and are able to offer substantial support in terms of advice, accommodation extension and local safety issues. One of the centres is earmarked as a rescue centre for the community should there be an eruption event. Alternatively, we work with hotels in other locations, such as Reykjavik, which we could utilise. Our Icelandic coach operator has robust transport resources to quickly implement changes.

What will students see and do.

With Rayburn Tours, schools can choose from numerous options to help their children see the world, whether as athletes, singers or students.

Within the educational realm, Rayburn specialises in geography, history and language trips, but its team can also create bespoke options that fit with your teaching objectives. Cultural tours and maths programmes are among those that have been created before.

Its geography trips take students to see the world’s natural wonders and learn about geographical challenges in places like Iceland or Naples.

Those planning history trips choose destinations linked to famous battles, social movements and significant events – nothing brings classroom lessons to life like standing in the Colosseum or walking down the Mall in Washington DC.

On language trips, Rayburn connects your classes with local tutoring and opportunities to practise their French, Spanish and German in real-life settings.

The company has also expanded its offering to include more UK tours, which offer excellent value for the money and create less travel stress. These cover almost the entirety of the UK and focus on geography, history, business studies and economics, as well as cultural sites.

Rayburn offers two types of sports tours for students, the first being the traditional ski trip to destinations all over Europe, the United States and Canada. The second type allows school teams to travel to play competitively against local and international teams while getting a taste of the country they visit.

Sports trips can focus on a single sport, for example, football, featuring training at world-renowned clubs, or cricket competitions in India or Dubai.

Travelling with your school choir, band or orchestra offers students a unique opportunity to perform in spectacular venues such as prestigious churches, jazz clubs or market squares.

Rayburn handles everything from instrument transport to marketing, so your students can enjoy their destination and stage time in at least three concerts.

How does the trip link to the curriculum?

Tours booked through Rayburn fit into the national curriculum in numerous ways, covering virtually every subject. Rayburn can also tailor-make trips to cover subjects such as classics, religious studies, textiles and performing arts.

Cross-curricular trips allow for a variety of subjects to be covered in one country, increasing the visit’s appeal to bring in more students. Examples include trips to the Netherlands that cover art, business studies, history and science, or to Venice to cover art and textiles.

A trip to Florence can combine maths, science and art as students learn about Leonardo da Vinci and Galileo.

Geography tours cover topics as diverse as coastal systems, plate tectonics and ecosystems. More unusual subject areas might cover globalisation, tourism and urban environments.

A history trip to NYC can be linked to various wars, the economic crash and the Depression and the Civil Rights era. Meanwhile, a language trip to Berlin introduces students to local cinema, political life and the city’s cultural heritage.

Beyond specific subjects, students can build a host of personal skills through international travel with a group. Children must exert more independence than they might at home or school. They have to manage money, keep track of luggage and equipment, and learn to handle new places on their own.

Subjects covered

Teaching resources provided.

Resources offered to teachers and group leaders vary based on the type of trip planned.

Geography trips offer the most-specific study resources to help you on tour and in the classroom. They are developed by Rayburn tour specialists specifically to tie in to the curriculum and are mostly suitable for older students.

Rayburn offers geography study handbooks and destination guides based on where you are going. The handbooks are bespoke to your tour and are offered in versions for teachers or students. They include destination-specific study units, including geographical concepts and on-site activities.

For example, the unit for the Blue Lagoon in Iceland covers geothermal energy, while the unit for Mount Etna in Sicily covers seismic monitoring.

History trips, on the other hand, are designed as independent tours, so the resource Rayburn offers is a tour guide.

Minimum and maximum group size

Rayburn Tours doesn’t list minimum or maximum group sizes for its tours. It does however offer small-group options for ski trips of between eight and 25 participants.

Details of risk assessment

Rayburn Tours provides safety management handbooks that cover general risks and crisis management as well as one specific to snow-sport trips. The company has options for teachers planning ski trips to conduct an inspection visit as well as for conducting their own risk assessment.

The general risk handbook covers the unique risks of travel abroad, such as public transport, high altitudes and concert venues. Teachers can access 24-hour emergency contacts on all student trips.

Facilities on-site

Facilities vary, depending on which tour you choose. However, there is a range of accommodation options to suit your group size and budget, from hostels and hotels to lodges and guesthouses. All accommodation is chosen due to its suitability for school groups.

Opening times

The tour office is open from 8am to 5.30pm on weekdays to answer any questions you may have.

Pricing is based on the length of your trip, its location, the type of trip and the total number of students in your group. Most educational trips run for three to five days. School trips to the US, UAE and other far destinations include air travel, while trips to mainland Europe typically go by coach.

Prices listed on the site reflect a full group size of at least 30–45 students, with one free staff place per ten students.

Educational trips start at £99 per person, but the average cost is in the £350–£500 range for most trips.

Travel arrangements

Travel arrangements for your tour depend on where you’re going and whether you’ve chosen a flight tour or a coach tour. Flights depart from London, while coach trips depart from your school.

It's a month or so since I returned from a visit to Iceland guiding for Rayburn Tours.

Rayburn is one of the companies that offers school visits to Iceland (and a number of other locations).  They offer the option of having a Field Studies tutor / Tour manager to help liaise with coach drivers, accommodation, venues etc. as well as providing details on the landscape, features, processes, history, culture and so much more.

Rayburn have provided the option of downloadable booklets with information on all the key locations that schools visit on their tours. They provide maps, images and other information.

I'm looking forward to heading back out to Iceland later this year, and also visiting with students from our own school.
