CONCERT REVIEW: QUEENS OF THE STONE AGE Deliver Thunderous And Cathartic Musical Celebration At The Amp in Bridgeport, CT (August 7th, 2023)

queens of the stone age tour reddit

Coming off a string of European and UK festival dates that ran from mid-June through early-July, Queens of the Stone Age ( QOTSA ) are touring North America in support of their new album (and 8th overall), “ In Times New Roman…” their first new material in more than five years! Dubbed The End Is Nero Tour, the Seattle, WA quintet formed in 1996, led by front-man/guitarist and founding member Josh Homme (a.k.a. Baby Duck ), visited the Hartford HealthCare Amphitheater (better known as the Amp) in Bridgeport, CT this past Monday evening on the fourth date on their 28-city trek.

At 5:30 PM sharp, gates to the former home of the Bridgeport Bluefish minor league baseball franchise – The Ballpark at Harbor Yard – opened to a line of diehard QOTSA fans that had been waiting for hours already. Nestled along the Long Island Sound waterfront, the boutique amphitheater that seats nearly 6,000 souls opened on July 28, 2021, with inaugural performances by REO Speedwagon and Styx .

The first of two bands performing this night in support of QOTSA were The Armed , a musical collective of at least seven members, with noise rock and post punk leanings. Created in Detroit, Michigan in 2009, the project has featured several guest collaborators on their releases, including QOTSA ’s very own Troy Van Leeuwen who produced The Armed ’s newest album ( “Perfect Saviors” ), and fifth overall, which is set for release on August 25. As membership in The Armed is anonymous, I did my very best to dig up these band-mate names – Cara Drolshagen , Patrick Shiroishi , Randall Lee and Urian Hackney . However, The Armed have gone to great lengths to deceive and misdirect their fans when it comes to who actually is in the band, even hiring actors to pretend to be members, using fake names and several other ruses. So, you can basically take these four names with a grain of salt.

Taking to the stage at approximately 7:00 pm, the outfit’s tornado of bodies twisted and swirled in all directions for the entire duration of their dizzying set, spilling into the audience on more than one occasion. The Armed offered up nine songs best described as experimental pop, including a few which were pulled from their fourth, highly acclaimed full-length album ( “Ultrapop “) released in 2021, including “All Futures,” “An Iteration” and “Big Shell.” As The Armed ’s 35-minute set turned for home, an awkward exchange occurred between one of the outfit’s male vocalists and someone in the audience. Nonetheless, the incident was short-lived and despite the slightly bad vibes, the apocalyptic delivery of fast, hard songs with tonsil-shredding vocals was still a welcome sight to behold.

Next to grace the stage was Phantogram , the electronic, dream pop musical duo of multi-instrumentalists and vocalists Sarah Barthel and Josh Carter . Formed in 2007 and hailing from Saratoga Springs, NY, the two friends who met in preschool were joined by a touring drummer and keyboardist as they mesmerized the steadily growing audience with their swirling guitars, spacey keyboards and airy vocals.

Like The Armed before them, Phantogram also tendered a nine song set which they spread across their four album discography. The heaviest dose of their set-list was gifted from 2014’s “Voices “, including “Black Out Days,” “Bad Dreams,” “Fall in Love,” and one of their biggest hits, “Howling at the Moon.”

The soft spoken Barthel – rocking a Pixies tee, black patent leather boots, shiny silver shorts and fishnets – and her hypnotic, engaging lyrics were on point all evening. As is accustomed when the duo performs live, her vocals were perfectly complimented by Carter ’s atmospheric guitar work (sporting his signature baseball hat) and the rest of the band’s trip-hop instrumentation for a captivating, dreamy set.

Shortly after 9:00 pm, as Peggy Lee’s “Smile” faded out from the house PA, Baby Duck (the only constant member throughout multiple lineup changes), the aforementioned Van Leeuwen (a multi-instrumentalist, including guitar and keyboard), Michael Shuman (bass), Jon Theodore (drums) and Dean Fertita (keyboards, guitar) entered at stage left to a deafening ovation. After assuming their rightful positions and taking up their respective instruments, the show was officially underway with “No One Knows,” from their third studio album and arguably one of their most beloved tracks. Up next was “The Lost Art of Keeping a Secret” , another one of QOTSA ’s finest songs (about f*cking, of course).

Spreading the wealth around their career-spanning discography (with the only absence being from their 1998 self-titled debut album), Homme and his supremely cool mates bestowed upon their fans 17 songs which more than adequately displayed their prowess as alternative rock gods. At the pinnacle of their careers, each member commanded total mastery of his craft, all set to a blues-infused backdrop established by Homme ’s distinctive guitar playing style and falsetto vocals.

The first of four offerings from 2023’s “In Times New Roman…” , “Emotion Sickness,” was soon to follow. QOTSA also presented “Carnavoyeur,” “Negative Space” and “Paper Machete” a bit later. Noteworthy, the final entry to their latest studio offering, “Straight Jacket Fitting,” was on the printed set-list between fan favorites “Make It Wit Chu” and “Little Sister,” taken from “Era Vulgaris” (2007) and “Lullabies to Paralyze” (2005), respectively, but did not make the cut. No worries though, as “God Is in the Radio” took its place as the penultimate song to the encore.

As the end of the epic night of stoner rock approached, Homme dedicated “In the Fade” to the late Mark Lanegan – prominent singer for the early grunge band Screaming Trees (1984-2000) and former QOTSA member (2000-2014) – who co-wrote the song with him.

Circling back to the encore, there really wasn’t one, as it was more of an acknowledgment by Homme as to where it should be had QOTSA physically walked off, and back onto the stage. So, for the sake of saving precious time in their 105-minute set, and in lieu of a traditional encore, Homme simply turned his back to the sold-out venue and then spun back around toward us, exclaiming “here we are again!” physically walked off, and back onto the stage. So, for the sake of saving precious time in their 105-minute set, and in lieu of a traditional encore, Homme simply turned his back to the sold-out venue and then spun back around toward us, exclaiming “here we are again!”

With the band’s outlaw swagger meter still registering 100 percent, the final coupling of songs (“Go with the Flow” and “A Song for the Dead” ) was upon us. But before the final number commenced, Homme addressed his loyal, rapturous fans one last time. “It was a pleasure to get to know you, thank you so much. I hope you had a wonderful night. C’est la vie motherf*ckers.”

The first leg of ‘The End Is Nero Tour ’ runs through August 19, with a stop at the Ascend Amphitheater in Nashville, TN. After a festival date in Sao Paulo, Brazil (September 9), the second leg of U.S. dates resumes on September 16 at Riot Fest in Chicago, IL, ultimately wrapping at the Aftershock Festival in Sacramento, CA on October 8. Less than a week after their North American tour culminates, QOTSA are off to Guadalajara, Mexico (October 14), followed by gigs in the Netherlands, Luxembourg, France, Germany, the UK, and finally, Dublin, Ireland on November 22.

"The End Is Nero" tour is in support of QUEENS OF THE STONE AGE 's eighth studio album, "In Times New Roman…" , hailed by Variety as "self-produced by band founder [ Josh ] Homme and one of his strongest QOTSA lineups ever, is one of the rawest and heaviest albums the band has delivered."

QUEENS OF THE STONE AGE performed live for the first time in more than three years on May 26, 2023 at the Sonic Temple festival in Columbus, Ohio. Prior to the Columbus gig, Josh Homme and his bandmates played one gig in early 2020, their first since 2018.

"In Times New Roman…" was made available digitally and physically on June 16, 2023 via Matador Records . The LP was recorded and mixed at Homme 's own Pink Duck (RIP),with additional recording at Shangri-La . The album was produced by QUEENS OF THE STONE AGE and mixed by Mark Rankin . Artwork and double LP gatefold packaging was designed by longtime collaborator Boneface . LP vinyl was made available globally in black, green, red, silver and blue.

QUEENS OF THE STONE AGE said in its album announcement that the record reflects the heartache its members have experienced in the past few years.

"In Times New Roman..." is "raw, at times brutal and not recommended for the faint of heart," a press release states. "And yet, it's perhaps the most beautiful and definitely the most rewarding album in their epic discography. Homme 's most acerbic lyrics to date are buoyed by the instantly identifiable QOTSA sonic signature, expanded and embellished with new and unprecedented twists in virtually every song. With 'In Times New Roman…' we see that sometimes one needs to look beneath scars and scabs to see beauty, and sometimes the scabs and scars are the beauty."

In December, Queens of the Stone Age sat down with NME to talk friendship and connection, a “romance” with  Dave Grohl , a backstage run-in with  Elton John and more.

On the topic of their future, their frontman Josh Homme said: “I think we should be making something. The mantra of the last five years was, ‘It won’t be long now!’ That needs to pertain to making things too. I certainly think we should make more, faster-er, better-er.”

Queens of the Stone Age are set to headline Download Festival for the first time next week. When asked by NME about how they are coping with any pressure of headlining the iconic UK rock festival, the two revealed that the band are feeling confident with their upcoming set, as one of their strengths is their ability to mix up their performances, night after night.

“Is it just going to be same-old-same-old?’ began Homme. “You always have to give it your all and changing it every night is what we’re about, so it’s always going to be something different. I don’t think there’s any reason to trip out.”

Fertita agreed, adding: “I think the reason that the shows have been so good is because there’s a relaxation to the approach. We’ll decide five minutes before going on to play something that we haven’t played in 20 years.”

“And if you see someone with a sign that says, ‘Do this god damn tune’ then it feels nice to just be able to react in the moment,” Homme chimed in. “We come bearing gifts, and we want to give everything away. It’s nice to play Donington, but it’s just as nice to play Bournemouth too. That’s not to cheapen either – they’re both as good as it can get. These aren’t real problems.”

Queens of the Stone Age

29th february 2024 spark arena, auckland, new zealand.

Review by Sarah Kidd  with photography by Doug Peters .

When it comes to a Queens of the Stone Age show it is quite apt to describe the crowd as ‘bristling’. Witnessing a beloved band live is always an exciting experience, but a Queens show is something else altogether; almost three decades on since their formation, they still write the books on rock n roll attitude.

But to get the crowd in the mood for an evening of divinity from Homme and the boys, not one but two support acts would first grace the stage. While the Australian leg of the tour featured Gut Health, New Zealand were treated to an opening set by none other than our very own Earth Tongue.

The Wellington duo comprising of Gussie Larkin (also of Mermaidens fame) and Ezra Simons have long been bringing their own form of psychedelic noise that resonates with a primal longing in the soul. Their use of polyrhythms, and distortion in all the right places, along with the vocals of Larkin creates a concoction that one can lose themselves to with ease.

Hailing from Perth, Pond certainly found many a fan amongst their Auckland audience and it was easy to see why. Incorporating psychedelic rock, pop as well as just general noisy goodness into their set they opened with a catchy little tune entitled ‘Daisy’, that was reminiscent of something you would hear from fellow Australian artist Alex Cameron. The five piece also ooze presence, lead vocalist Nick Allbrook hurling himself around the stage when not on guitar. ‘America’s Cup’ saw many ‘ponderers’ in the audience sing along while punchy guitar solos impressed those seeing them for the first time. Fans of Tame Impala would do well to check Pond out if they haven’t already done so (with many of the members having been involved with Impala at some point or another). After a killer set last night, a headline show here is most certainly required.

Having released their eighth studio album – ‘In Times New Roman’ – last year it was no wonder that Spark Arena was heaving with bodies, those down front securing their spots, eyes locked in anticipation of what was about to befall them. Darkness fell and the audience erupted as Queens took their place, the lights turning blood red as the unmistakable opening bars of ‘No One Knows’ struck like bolts of lightning. For many this was the song that introduced them to the band, so it was no surprise that the crowd went wild. While many long-standing bands begin to shy away from playing the radio hits, Queens instead embrace it, there was no ‘let’s get this out of the way’, if anything it was even more vivacious than when last played as part of their set back in 2018 .

Taking a moment to breathe it all in, Homme gazed over the crowd with a slightly crooked smile dancing across his lips, looking every inch a fox, his beard giving him a devilishly distinguished look. But the pause was fleeting, for Queens of the Stone Age were here to dance, ‘The Lost Art of Keeping a Secret’ followed by the hedonistic ‘Smooth Sailing’ delivering a one two punch to the endorphins.

Spotting a sign amongst the sea of arms that read “ I have waited ten years to hear ‘I Appear Missing’ ” soon caught Hommes attention, asking for it to be brought to him, he immediately invited the couple holding it to join the band side of stage, a once in a lifetime experience that they are certain to never forget, their smiles as they took their place to the left of the band more luminescent than the incredible lighting itself.

Homme it seems has a new lease of life; while always an absolute tour de force live, his recent battles with the loss of loved ones, a messy divorce and cancer has seen him declare that he feels “closer to the things that he loves”, obviously music being one of them.

While the swaggering front man is often hard to tear one’s eyes away from, Queens are a band that is brimming with talent. Dressed in his trademark tailored suit, and white shoes, Troy Van Leeuwen reached god like status on guitar, to his left Michael Shuman on bass furnished each song with relish, Dean Fertita atop a riser behind Leeuwen holding down both keys and guitar with ease. But the tip of the hat must of course go to drummer Jon Theodore who despite having food poisoning the night before played as if his life depended on it.

‘My God is the Sun’ was gargantuan, vocals and instruments melding as one as they grew in intensity, ‘I Sat by The Ocean’ seeing fans lose themselves in the groove before Homme discussed with the audience (who he often referred to as “ cunts who were amazing ” with a wry smile) that he had heard that the Jonas brothers had played earlier in the week and that he wouldn’t mind two of them “ any two will do ”. Homme following it up by saying that the point of the whole thing, of life, was to love what you like and to live in the moment. Enjoy it for all that it is worth.

And enjoy he did, his ferocity, that switchblade smile only growing in magnitude as the show moved through what had to be one of their best set lists to date. There was something for everyone, from the instantly recognisable bass stomps of ‘Burn the Witch’ (dedicated to the one and only Jack Black who happened to be backstage) through to the delicious ‘3’s & 7’s’ with its rockabilly fuzzy overtones. Tracks from their latest album such as ‘Straight Jacket Fitting’ strutting around the room, Homme himself deciding to go for a wander amongst the audience for more than a hot minute, ensconcing himself deep in the front section as he got philosophical with a fan, before leading a sing-along with the entire crowd.

Old school fans of Queens were left aghast but enraptured, Homme always commanding the stage, but this, this was a whole new and invigorated man, one who was tossing caution to the wind and living in the moment, letting it take him where it would.

‘Make it Wit Chu’ prowled the room, unadulterated sexual tension dripping from its fangs as Homme smoked and swayed his hips while blowing a kiss to someone that had caught his eye in the seated section, Queens themselves knowing just how to ease back and infuse the song with a sultriness that stirred in the depths of ones loins; Stones fans recognising the nod as ‘Miss You’ was nestled away inside the breakdown. Homme introducing ‘Little Sister’ with “ No one plays cow bell like we do ”, the song closing the set with straight out rock that saw the mosh pit bounce.

A three part encore, all from the album Songs for the Deaf, was begun with ‘God is in the Radio’, the six minute track giving those down the front the chance to limber up before being hit full force with both ‘Go With the Flow’ and ‘Song for the Dead’, an epic drum solo from Theodore taking the encore to the next level as the mosh pit heaved under the weight of its own unbridled ecstasy. Homme farewelling the audience before tearing the gold chain from his neck and tossing it to a young woman in the front row by the name of Grace.

Queens of the Stone Age have always ruled the stage, Josh Homme the ultimate devil may care master of ceremonies. But this tour is a new beast altogether; Homme has been reborn. This is a man who has stared into the abyss and embraced the darkness before dousing it in gasoline and dancing in its naked flames.
