Sharing is caring!

Many families combine a visit to Walt Disney World or Universal Studios with a cruise departing out of Port Canaveral, just an hour away. But it can be tough to decide on the best way to get from MCO to Port Canaveral’s cruise terminal. Today Aimee of Babies & Beaches is sharing the pros and cons of different options for transportation from MCO to Port Canaveral. After reading this article, you should have a great sense for the right option for your cruise from Orlando! Our family recently took a cruise from Port Canaveral shortly and we went for #4 with an overnight stay the night before at this hotel that offers a discounted rate for cruisers!

You’ve booked a cruise out of Port Canaveral and you’re super excited about your upcoming family travel adventure! If you’re flying into Orlando, Florida, you’re going to need to know how to get from the Orlando airport to Port Canaveral.

The cruise terminals are about an hour east of Orlando International Airport. There are a few different ways that you can make the journey from the airport to the port. We’ve got all the details on each of these transportation options below to help you plan your trip.

It’s important to remember that for all of these options (with one exception I’ll note below) your child will need to ride in a car seat. Safety first! Fortunately there are plenty of great lightweight travel car seats for every age .

While you’re in the planning stages, be sure to read these cruise cabin hacks to make your statement more livable!

MCO to Port Canaveral Transportation Option #1: Rent a Car

port canaveral cruise terminal to mco

This is the most popular option for getting to Port Canaveral from MCO. You can fly into Orlando International Airport (MCO), rent a car, and drive from the airport to Port Canaveral. Renting a car has its perks because you can make your own schedule.

Be sure to check price at RentalCars.com , as they buy days in bulk and then offer them at a discount to travelers. I also find great deals often through Expedia car rentals !

If you have several hours between your cruise departure and your flight, you have time to explore these beaches near Orlando while you’re in town.

Another reason to rent a car is to be able to make a grocery stop. Cruises generally allow you to bring bottles of wine or soda that you can’t pack in your airport luggage. Grab these with your rental car on your way to Port Canaveral.

Renting a car in Orlando can also be the easiest option if you’ll be spending a few days visiting Disney World or Universal Studios .

Cutting Costs with Car Rentals

Although renting a car and paying for it to sit for the length of your cruise might get expensive, there are ways to cut the cost.

Parking at Port Canaveral cruise ship port is $17 per day. That can add up on a seven-day cruise. This makes the cost per day a lot higher than some of the other options.

Two ways to cut your cost with a rental car are using an off-site parking lot or getting a one-way rental.

Many parking lots within a few miles of the cruise ship port offer cheaper parking and will shuttle you to your ship. Be sure to check the times of the available shuttles and how often they run. Again, you will be at the mercy of their schedule.

If you decide to do a one-way car rental, you can drop your car off in Port Canaveral and the car rental facility will shuttle you to the cruise ship terminal. While this is a great option for longer cruises, just watch for one-way fees which can add up fast. And remember that you’ll need to arrange a one-way car rental for your return Port Canaveral transportation to MCO as well!

For our shorter four-day cruise, it was cheaper to do a round trip rental and pay for parking than to do two one-way rentals. If you just plan to pick up your rental car at the airport and use it exclusively to get to and from Port Canaveral, be sure to check the rates at RentalCars.com – they buy days in bulk from suppliers and pass the savings on to customers.

If you plan to combine a cruise with theme parks, check out the combined pricing for tickets and rental car at Undercover Tourist . You can save hundreds of dollars on the rental car by bundling them, even if the dates don’t match up with your theme park days!

MCO to Port Canaveral Transportation Option #2: Park and Cruise in Port Canaveral

port canaveral cruise terminal to mco

If you’re looking for a hassle-free way to get to the port, you may want to consider staying at a “park and cruise” hotel.

These hotels offer complimentary or discounted parking while you’re on your cruise. They also provide transportation to and from the airport as well as the cruise terminal.

This gives you extra time to explore the area.  Stay in Orlando for the day – maybe you are considering a visit to Disney World – before checking into your hotel the night before departure. Or go straight to Port Canaveral and spend the day at the nearby Kennedy Space Center on Cape Canaveral!

The first day is the most fun day of a cruise as everyone is excited and ready to start their vacation. It pays to be rested and not dragging around from traveling all morning.

Yes, you will pay for another night in a hotel, but generally the flights and transportation are cheaper when you book a “park and cruise” package.

Some of the most popular park and cruise hotels near Port Canaveral include the brand new Springhill Suites by Marriott , Radisson Resort at the Port , the Country Inn & Suites by Radisson , and the Residence Inn by Marriott Cape Canaveral Cocoa Beach .

MCO to Port Canaveral Transportation Option #3: Port Canaveral Shuttle Service or Coach Bus

port canaveral cruise terminal to mco

If you don’t want to rent a car or stay at a park and cruise hotel, you can book a shuttle to take you from Orlando International Airport (MCO) to Port Canaveral. This is a great option for small groups as tickets are charged per person.

Several shuttle services are running from Orlando-area airports to the Port Canaveral cruise ship terminal. The best part of these is that they usually offer affordable prices – with some trade offs.

The best shuttle from MCO to Port Canaveral is the one provided by your cruise line, if they offer that service. The nice thing about going Orlando cruise line transportation is that since they know you are coming, they won’t leave cruise passengers behind.

Disney Cruise Line runs a large coach bus (seen above) between the airport and cruise port. This is the only option that doesn’t require a car seat. From a safety perspective it probably should since the bus is traveling on highways, but Disney says that their buses don’t support car seat installation and that car seats will be stowed with your luggage.

The downside to an MCO to Port Canaveral shuttle is that they have their own schedules. If your flight comes in much earlier than the scheduled shuttle, you will be waiting around for some time.  This could be an issue if you have small children and minimal patience!

On the other hand, if your flight is delayed you could miss your shuttle altogether. Likewise if your cruise returns to port late, a shared shuttle may not wait for you and you may wind up in a pickle trying to get back to Orlando International Airport irport for your flight. Be sure to check their policies on this and have a backup plan.

Shuttles might also make other stops at airports or area hotels to pick up more guests or wait until they have a full bus to leave. Again, you are on their schedule, so be prepared for anything. An MCO shuttle to Port Canaveral might not be the best option if you have very young children.

MCO to Port Canaveral Transportation Option #4: Taxi or Uber/Lyft

port canaveral cruise terminal to mco

Another option for getting from Orlando International Airport (MCO) to Port Canaveral is to take a taxi or rideshare service like Uber or Lyft directly to the cruise terminal.

The best part of these services is they are already there and great for the last minute. They don’t need to be planned in advance, so if you didn’t know you needed to make a 45-minute drive to Port Canaveral you aren’t completely out of options.

Also, if your “Plan A” failed due to a late flight or other issues, taxis are always there to get you to Port Canaveral!

The downside is that they get expensive – fast!  Due to the distance and time it takes to get to the cruise ship port, the bill adds up. Taxis are going to be the most expensive option for getting from MCO to Port Canaveral.  A one-way Port Canaveral taxi rate is about $120-$130. Uber and Lyft are a little cheaper, with an UberX ride costing around $75+ and a Lyft ride costing around $65+ depending on whether or not “surge pricing” is in place.

If you’re traveling with kids, you’ll want to make sure that you have a car seat plan for your Uber from MCO to Port Canaveral. Find out more about Uber and car seats , including what to expect in Orlando.

MCO to Port Canaveral Transportation Option #5: Orlando Airport Limo Services and Private Cars

port canaveral cruise terminal to mco

If you want to feel like a celebrity for the day, then book a limousine from Orlando to Port Canaveral ! This is a great option for larger groups, as most limos can accommodate up to eight people. If your group is smaller, consider a private sedan.

A limo service may seem like an expensive option, but there are several perks. Most of the time, these drivers will meet you inside the airport and offer luggage assistance. Even if you’re starting off with a few days at a theme park, it’s easy to use this type of private transportation from Orlando to Port Canaveral because they’ll pick you up wherever you are.

It feels first class if that’s the vibe you’re going for on this vacation! Drivers are usually more than happy to make a quick grocery store stop for you as well.

The price may be slightly higher, but definitely reasonable – for larger families, it can be about the same price as a shared shuttle from the Orlando airport but with far more flexibility. Call around to several companies, ask questions and read reviews.

It’s nice to have a personal driver that you will be able to call on your return trip as well.  Just be sure to book your limo in advance, as they can fill up quickly during peak travel times.

This private transportation from MCO to Port Canaveral starts at $166 for up to 6 people in a luxury SUV. Another great option is Welcome Pickups , which is a well-regarded international company offering cars for up to 4 passengers.

MCO to Port Canaveral Transportation Options

port canaveral cruise terminal to mco

There are so many ways to get to Port Canaveral to get on your cruise ship!  It really depends on your family and what your travel plans are. Think carefully about your needs as you consider the options:

  • Are you traveling with kids or a large group?
  • Do you need to make stops after leaving the Orlando airport?
  • How close is your flight time to cruise ship departure time?

No matter what, cruising is a great way to travel, vacation, and enjoy time with family.  Which way do you prefer to get to the Port Canaveral cruise terminals?

Thanks for sharing your research and all the info. I could not find any shuttle service that would service our flight time (arrival at 11 pm), either to a hotel at the airport or a hotel in Port Canaveral. We ended up renting one way rental at the airport, staying in Port Canaveral 2 nights and turning it in to rental car company at Port Canaveral. On our 1st leg, we rented with Enterprise at MCO, and turn in was so easy with a 5-10 minute ride to the ship. While our return was a slog…..No signage at MSC terminal for rental car company pick ups, only a message on AVIS phone so could not get specifics and almost an hour wait for a van with space enough for us. We had to stand in line and wait for 3 vans to fill up and go before our turn. Off the ship early(8;20 am), it was around 10:30 before we were “in” the rental car leaving the rental center. Meanwhile, I saw the Enterprise vehicle about every 10 minutes loading up and leaving. (Enterprise, National shared a building/van system). Now I know for “next time”. We turned our rental in the night before our flight out of MCO, as we had an early flight, and La Quinta at the airport was great about picking us up and returning to the hotel, and getting us to the airport bright and early. I saw you had Radisson at the Port listed. That is where we stayed, and it was highly disappointing. There was construction all around the property. The lobby areas in the furthest buildings (we were in bldg 600) was absolutely FILTHY. The room was clean, but was not the king room I reserved. Lots of lovely NEW hotels all around. This certainly didn’t live up to Raddison standards.

Thanks for your valuable feedback on getting from the Orlando airport to Port Canaveral and renting a car in Port Canaveral!

Safe travels,

One of the main challenges of Miami parking is the scarcity of available spaces, particularly in popular areas like South Beach, Downtown Miami, Wynwood, and Coconut Grove. During peak tourist seasons or special events, finding a parking spot can become a daunting task, often leading to frustration and wasted time for both residents and visitors

Cruise parking is often overlooked but crucial. Thanks for simplifying the process and highlighting cost-effective options for a stress-free experience!”

Very good information, Thanks!

Transportation to the Terminal: If Pack On Cruise Parking provides shuttle services to the cruise terminal, provide details on the frequency, reliability, and convenience of these transportation options.

“Make sure to keep your parking ticket in a safe place, as you’ll need it for the exit process. Taking a quick photo of it with your phone is a simple way to avoid any mishaps.”

That’s a great tip!

Ultimate List of Shuttles From Orlando Airport (MCO) to Port Canaveral (2024)

Ben Souza

Port Canaveral is the world’s busiest cruise port but unfortunately, there aren’t any major airports within a half hour drive. MCO, Orlando International Airport, is 45 miles away and close to an hour drive. Because of this, taking a taxi can be expensive.

Thankfully, there are a number of shuttle and car service companies that you can take and it will be a lot cheaper than taxis. These range from shuttle busses to luxury town cars. There’s everything for budget conscious travelers to those who to want a luxury, white glove experience.

In this article, I will go over the number of options for transportation between MCO and Port Canaveral, including my personal experience when flying into Orlando and cruising from Port Canaveral.

I will also go over options for couples and groups so you can decide which one is best for you.

If you and your family are going on a Disney cruise, Disney Cruise Line offers a transport bus from the airport directly to the Disney terminal at Port Canaveral. On the way to the port, the bus will play a informational video getting you pumped up for your cruise.

Reservations must be booked online at least 3 days before your cruise via your Disney Cruise check-in.

You can choose one-way travel, but they recommend that you opt for round trip as it’ll save you money. Also keep in mind that a shared ride, though cheaper, is only going to be available if other people have booked transportation for the same route for around the same timeframe.

One of the things we like most about SuperShuttle is the mobile app, which makes it super easy to manage your account and any trips you have booked.

You can also get airline rewards every time you book shuttle service through them. You just choose your preferred program: American Airlines AAdvantage, Delta SkyMiles, Frontier EarlyReturns, Southwest Airlines Rapid Rewards, or United MileagePlus. It’s as easy as connecting your SuperShuttle account with your airline rewards number.

  • Price: Approximately $118.85 round trip (Premium Sedan)

How much does Uber/Lyft cost from MCO to Port Canaveral?

Even though this is more expensive than taking a shuttle, it’s my personal preferred method of going to the cruise port. I’ve done it several times and will probably do it again on my next cruise.

There are two benefits to using Uber or Lyft. The first is that you get a private car all to yourself. The second is that you can request a ride whenever you’re ready and not have to worry about the scheduling times of shuttles.

In the past, I have paid anywhere from $60-$80 for a basic car, but a lot can depend on time of day, surge pricing, etc.

If you want or need a larger vehicle, it will likely cost over $100 each way.

Does Amtrak go to Port Canaveral from Orlando airport?

In short, no they don’t. However, there is an option you can take that requires multiple transfers from busses, to a train, and then a shuttle bus to the port. Because of this, I personally don’t see anyone choosing this option because of the time it takes and the pain of carrying luggage with multiple types of transfers.

Also, Brightline does not have a station near Port Canaveral at this time.

port canaveral shuttle service

Deciding which mode of transportation you’re going to take for your cruise out of Port Canaveral all depends on you. What’s best for one person is not best for everyone.

Personally, I just take a Lyft or Uber because I like the convenience of it. I have taken shuttles in the past but waiting in line to check-in, then waiting again for the bus just wasn’t for me.

Whichever you decide, we hope you have a great cruise.

9 Best Ways to Travel from Orlando to Port Canaveral

The two closest airports to Port Canaveral are the Orlando International Airport (MCO) and the smaller Orlando Sanford International Airport (SFB), which are located 45 miles and 66 miles from the cruise terminals respectively.

This guide covers transportation options from both airports to Port Canaveral, including detailed information on:

Shuttles from Orlando to Port Canaveral

  • Private transport from Orlando to Port Canaveral
  • Unique transportation options from Orlando to Port Canaveral
  • Large group transport from Orlando to Port Canaveral
  • And much more!

Whether you’re looking for the quickest trip between the two destinations, the most budget-friendly option, or anything in between, keep reading to discover the nine best ways to travel from Orlando to Port Canaveral.

There are three ways to travel by shuttle from the ‘Magic City’ to the cruise terminals on the cape. The first is with independent shuttle services, the second is with official shuttle services from the cruise lines, and the third is with hotel shuttle services. We’ll break down the pro and cons of each!

1. Independent shuttles from Orlando to Port Canaveral

Port Canaveral is the second busiest cruise terminal in the world after the Port of Miami, so a seemingly endless amount of shuttle companies have popped up to satisfy the demand for transport between Orlando and the port.

The shuttle services are shared and typically cost around $30 and up for the round trip per person, but the price can go down when you have a larger group with more passengers. Start your search with this list shuttle companies:

Go Port Canaveral – Website

Star Trans VIP – Website

Ace Luxury Transport – Website

Cortrans Shuttle – Website

Cocoa Beach Shuttle – Website

Tropicana Transport – Website

Smart-Two.com Shuttles – Website

Spaceport Transport – Website

Mears Transportation – Website

Of course, there are plenty of shuttle services to choose from and plenty of online threads and reviews that can suck of hours of your time while you browse. If it all seems a bit overwhelming, consider an official cruise shuttle service or hotel shuttle services instead.

2. Official cruise shuttles from Orlando to Port Canaveral

Many cruise lines like Disney and Carnival offer their own shuttle services for their passengers from Orlando to Port Canaveral and back again. Each package is different, so speak to your cruise when booking to iron out the transport details and prices as well. Often, these shuttle services are more expensive than third-party options like those listed above, but they’re also more reliable and, if they’re running late, your cruise won’t leave without you.

3. Hotel shuttles

Some hotels in Cape Canaveral offer full packages for cruise passengers that include transport from Orlando to the hotel and the hotel to the cruise terminals before your cruise, and then from Port Canaveral back to Orlando when you return to Cape Canaveral after your trip.

If you’re planning to spend the night in Cape Canaveral before you set sail, these Fly, Cruise, and Snooze packages – from hotels like Comfort Inn and Suites Cocoa Beach and Courtyard by Marriott Cocoa Beach-Port Canaveral in this roundup by USA Today – can save you a significant amount of money on your trip.

Private Transport from Orlando to Port Canaveral

Skip the shuttles all together and choose private transportation between the airport and the cruise terminals with taxis, ridesharing apps like Uber and Lyft, or with a car rental.

As you might expect, taxis are one of the most expensive options to travel from the MCO and SFB airports to Port Canaveral. TaxiFareFinder estimates the rates from the Orlando International Airport to the terminal are about $126 without the tip per car (but remember, this price does cover up to four people). From the Sanford International Airport, the trip is a bit longer so the fare is also higher at $151 per car each way. Luckily, ridesharing services like Uber and Lyft have much more affordable prices.

5. Uber and Lyft

Unsurprisingly, Uber is less than half the price of a taxi.

From the Orlando International Airport to Port Canaveral the trip will only run about $59 per car. For a group of four, that makes the ride $30 per person round trip, which is the same as the cheapest shuttle services but much more convenient because it doesn’t require booking ahead or worries about late shuttles or no-shows.

The only downside to using Uber instead of a shuttle service is that the price can vary based on traffic and surging, but usually, the app can predict that before you call the ride. From the Sanford Airport, an Uber to Port Canaveral will cost about $78 each way.

6. Car Rental

Car rental services can be a good choice for the trip between Orlando and Port Canaveral, but only under certain circumstances.

There are many companies to choose from at the airports that also have offices near Cape Canaveral, so a one-way rental is usually possible, but does often come with an extra fee. If you decide to keep your car for the duration of your cruise, you’ll need to factor in the parking fees as well. Even with this in mind, car rentals can be a budget-friendly way to travel around Florida, especially if you plan to explore more of the state before or after your cruise.

One extra tip for the trip: there are toll roads on the route from both the Orlando International Airport and the Sanford International Airport, but they can be avoided by simply checking the ‘Avoid Tolls’ option in Google Maps when you calculate the route.

From the Orlando International Airport avoiding tolls does add significant travel time and distance to the trip, taking it from about 45 miles to 60 miles and adding 30 minutes of travel time. From the Sanford Airport, the drive without tolls is about the same length as the one with them and will take you via FL-46 E and I-95 S. This route takes an hour and seven minutes to drive the 60-mile route.

But of course you can schedule you limo service to Port Canaveral cruise terminal any time you like and your chauffer will be at your desired resort, hotel or your residence at your requested time.

Do my children require car seats, and what is the Florida law regarding children car seats and do your provide them and is there any charge?

Under the Florida Child Car Seat Laws, it is the responsibility of the supervising adult to ensure that any child under 5 years old is seated in a federally-approved child car seat. Failure to do so could result in a $60 fine and 3 points against your driver's license.

Florida law states:

  • Children 3 years old and younger must use a separate car-seat or the vehicle's built-in child seat.
  • Children 4 through 5 years must sit in either a separate car seat, a built in child seat or a seat belt, depending on the child's height and weight.
  • Children 6 through 17 years old must be in a seatbelt.

Yes, here is a $5 charge for each car seat, booster seat or infant seat for each way. You can always book and reserve yours when you book your transportation with us. But you can always call at least 24 hours. prior to your service date and time and request it then.

Where do we find our driver at the Orlando Airport and at the Port Canaveral cruise terminal.

Once you book with Orlando Airport Transportation service your chauffer will meet & greet you in the baggage claim area of your airline on level 2 and he/she will be standing by the bottom of the escalator with your requested name sign.

If you do not find your driver once you get to your baggage claim area please call us right away and we will locate them for you

  • At the Disney cruise terminal your driver will meet & greet you at the same spot where they dropped you off at the time your arrival at the cruise terminal. Disney cruise terminal use same pickup/drop off location for their guest who are using the private limo transportation service.
  • At Royal Caribbean cruise terminal your chauffer will meet & greet you under the parking garage area as soon as you walk out from the exit door of Royal Caribbean cruise terminal you will see them. It is the same parking garage where they will drop you when you arrive to Royal Caribbean cruise.
  • At the Carnival cruise terminal your chauffer will meet & greet you right outside of the cruise terminal. As soon as you exit out of the carnival cruise terminal take a left and you will see a designated area for all the private limo transportation companies.

Please make sure to turn on your cell phones as your plane lands at the Orlando International Airport and when your cruise line arrives at Cape Canaveral.

If we returning a car at the Orlando international or outside the airport can you pick us up from our car rental company?

Yes, simply let us know at the time of your reservation that you would need to picked up at your rental car company in or out of the Orlando International Airport and we will pick you up right there.

We are arriving into Sanford international airport, do you pick up from there?

Yes, we do pick up from Orlando Sanford International Airport and drive your family to Port Canaveral cruise terminals or coco beach area hotels.

Which is the closest airport to Port Canaveral?

The closest airport to Port Canaveral is Melbourne International Airport. But not all of the major airlines fly into Melbourne International Airport. So that leave Orlando International Airport "MCO" the closes major airport to Port Canaveral and coco beach area.

We highly recommend you to fly into Orlando International Airport if you are taking a cruise out of Port Canaveral.

When we return from the cruise terminal our flight is not departing until later that evening, what we can do around Cape Canaveral or around the airport, what do you recommend?

The best option is to of course hire our chauffer for 2/3 hours and go to you can go to Florida mall, Premium International Outlet mall, Universal Studios city walk or Disney springs. Your driver will wait with your luggage and once you are done they will drive you back to the Orlando Airport.

Why not Kennedy space center?

We believe you cannot do justice to Kennedy space center if you only went for 2/3 hours. There is so much to do and a lot to explore, so unless you have 5/6 hours to spend then it is worth going there and you will have the best experience of your life.

We are arriving at Orlando Airport with different airline on different times?

Very simply, we always request the latest flight information from you in that scenario, the other passengers who would arrive early at Orlando International Airport after they pick up their bags they need to head to the latest flight/airline baggage claim and your chauffer will pick up everyone there at one location and drive you to your final destination.

We are staying in two or three different resorts on Disney property, how we schedule our pick up?

Yes, we can certainly pick up on multiple location in Disney World. Simply let us know at the time of the pick that who you would like to pick us up first and later and we will schedule you accordingly.

NOTE: there is a $15 extra charge for each additional pick up.

Half of our party needs to go to airport and half needs to go to Disney World or universal area hotels?

Sure, no problem your driver can of course drop off the party at the Orlando Airport first and then the rest of the party to their final destination weather it is around or in Disney World or by Universal Studios or around International Drive area hotels.

NOTE: There is a $25 charge for the addition drop off to those above areas.

NOTE: But not to the hotels by the airport within 2/3 miles radios from Orlando International Airport.

What time and how early you can pick up from the Port Canaveral cruise terminal?

We can pick you up as early as any time you want. But realistically if you are coming off the Port Canaveral cruise terminal you will not be off the ship as early as

  • Royal Caribbean cruise 7:00 AM
  • Disney cruise line 7:00 AM
  • Carnival Cruise line 8:00 AM
  • Norwegian cruise 7:00 AM

But we highly recommend you to keep all of your luggage with you in the room, do not check in your luggage a night before if you trying to get off the boat as soon as possible in the morning. This can speed up the process and as soon as you clear customs and immigration you can be off the boat right away since you already have your luggage with you.

If you do not see your desired question & answer above please feel free to contact us by calling or email us or request a call back and one of our reservation specialist will call you on your requested time.

About port canaveral, florida.

Port Canaveral welcome sign

Port Canaveral is in Central Florida, roughly 20 miles north of Palm Beach and 40 miles east of Orlando. The port is a departure point for cruise ships traveling to the Caribbean and the Gulf of Mexico. Carnival, Disney, Royal Caribbean and Norwegian all operate ships from the port. Additionally, its proximity to major cities makes it a pivotal link for travelers, particularly offering convenient transportation options from port canaveral to orlando airport, enhancing the travel experience for those arriving or departing from the area.

MS MSC Divina at Poer Canaveral in 2016

Port Canaveral is a cruise, cargo and naval port in Brevard County, Florida, United States. It is one of the busiest cruise ports in the world with 3.9 million cruise passengers passing through during 2014. As a deep water cargo port, it has a high volume of traffic. Ten ships, on average, enter the port each day.

The Exploration Tower at 670 Dave Nesbit Drive in Port Canaveral, Florida

A recent addition to the port is the seven-story Exploration Tower, which offer tourists almost 550,000 square feet (51,000 m2) of exhibit space, interactive displays, two observation decks – one inside and one outside – a 72-seat auditorium, and event rooms, as well as a café and a gift shop. Carnival, Disney, Norwegian and Royal Caribbean International are some of the cruise lines which dock at one of the five cruise terminals. In December 2014, Port Canaveral and Royal Caribbean International opened Terminal 1, a new terminal building built to handle the Oasis class ships. It was further announced in March 2015 that Port Canaveral would become the new home port of the world's largest cruise ship, the Oasis of the Seas, highlighting the port's significance as a global cruise destination and its strategic importance for easy access from port canaveral to orlando airport for international and domestic travelers.

Client Testimonials

Got there early for our flight to Manchester but beware queues through passport checks always seem lengthy. Food options are a better range before going through passport control. We were significantly delayed getting through due to searches required after my medical device registered an alert. If wearing an insulin pump you may wish to consider applying for TSA at around $55 up front!? Also be aware that you need to catch a short journey train from the transportation centre to the gates to board your plane, so advise is to give yourselves plenty of time! Happy travelling!!

15+ Hotels With Cruise Shuttles Between Orlando and Port Canaveral

If you are flying into Orlando for a cruise from Port Canaveral, then you are going to need to figure out how to get to your ship. The port is about 45 minutes away from the Orlando International Airport (MCO), which is the closest major airport to the cruise terminals.

Cruise ship docked at Port Canaveral

The good news is that as one of the busiest ports in America, there are a number of options to get to the cruise terminal. From Uber to shuttles, you can easily make your way to the Port Canaveral/Cocoa Beach area .

But perhaps no way of getting to the port is as convenient as an Orlando hotel near the airport with a cruise shuttle. As a way of winning your business, many spots near the airport offer a free shuttle to their hotel after you arrive from your flight. And then after your stay, they can help you with a shuttle ride to Port Canaveral (for a fee).

This way you don’t have to worry how you are going to get to the hotel from the airport or to the cruise ship on the day you sail. (A number of hotels in Port Canaveral also offer cruise shuttles if you prefer to stay closer to your ship.)

How Airport and Cruise Shuttles Work for Orlando Hotels

Airport Shuttles : Most of the hotels below work in a similar way. They offer free shuttles between the airport and the hotel that run either 24 hours per day, or at all times except for a few hours in the middle of the night.

You’ll want to get all your luggage and only then call the hotel. They will direct you on where to go to catch your ride. Since all the hotels below are right near the Orlando airport, the ride should only take 5-10 minutes.

Port Canaveral Shuttles : Given the distance, the vast majority of hotels don’t have their own shuttle to the port. Instead, cruise passengers can arrange a ride with a third-party shuttle provider if staying at a hotel near the airport. So you book the hotel and then contact the shuttle company to book your ride . The shuttle will pick you up right at the hotel to take you to the port. They will also give you a ride back for your flight when you return.

Expect the shuttle to run roughly $50-70 per person, round trip. The following companies offer pickup at the hotels near the airport.

  • Cortrans Shuttle
  • Port Canaveral Quick Shuttle
  • Danica Transportation

For hotels that offer shuttles through a package, you may have to book through the hotel website. Review ratings come from Google and are rounded to the nearest half point.

Best Way To Get From Orlando Airport to Port Canaveral

Best Way To Get From Orlando Airport To Port Canaveral

With Port Canaveral being the busiest cruise port in the world, you may be surprised to find the most convenient airport to fly into, Orlando International Airport (MCO), is 45 miles away. This extra 45-60 minute drive to the port after arriving at the airport can make it a challenge for cruisers flying in on embarkation day. Due to the distance, it’s essential for travelers to ensure they choose a reliable ride that will get them to their ship on time to board. It can be pretty costly if you miss your cruise — but don’t worry, Go Port has got you covered! We’ll compare the most popular transportation options to help you choose the best way to get from Orlando Airport to Port Canaveral for your upcoming vacation.

Port Canaveral Rental Car

port canaveral cruise terminal to mco

If you’re arriving in Orlando a few days before your cruise and plan on visiting the theme parks or other attractions in the area, having a rental car may make sense for your situation. However, for those flying in the day of their cruise, renting a car to make the 45-mile trip to the port isn’t as simple as you may think. While there are many rental car agencies conveniently located right in the Orlando Airport, that’s where the convenience ends. After filling out all the necessary paperwork at the check-in counter, you’ll need to pick up your vehicle in the airport garage. Then, before you get to your cruise, you’ll need to return your vehicle to the Port Canaveral drop-off location which is in Cruise Terminal 1. Unless you’re specifically sailing out of this terminal, you’ll need to take a shuttle or catch an Uber to get to your ship since the area isn’t walkable. Many cruisers get caught up in long lines when picking up or returning their vehicle. This can be especially stressful when trying to make it to your cruise on time or catch your flight home.

On top of the hassle of picking up and dropping off your vehicle, this transportation option can often be more expensive than others. The cost of renting a car from the Orlando Airport with a drop-off in Port Canaveral will vary based on the vehicle you choose. Prices for a standard car start at $147 while SUVs and vans start at $162 and $275 respectively. Keep in mind you’ll also have to pay for gas and tolls and may even need to rent a bigger vehicle to accommodate luggage.

Shuttle from Orlando Airport to Port Canaveral

port canaveral cruise terminal to mco

Pre-arranged shared shuttles are one of the most reliable transportation options to get to your cruise. Transfers from the Orlando Airport to Port Canaveral can be purchased directly from your cruise line, however, these shuttles tend to be pretty pricey. Port Canaveral cruise lines charge between $35.99 – $39 per person, each way. Go Port offers the same quality shuttles as your cruise line for just $29.99. You won’t have to worry about luggage either as opposed to other transportation options mentioned; our shuttles have plenty of storage with greeters available to assist in loading and unloading your bags.

Go Port makes it easy and convenient for cruisers to get from the Orlando Airport to Port Canaveral. When you arrive at the airport, you’ll simply collect your luggage from baggage claim and check-in at our counter located in Terminal A. One of our greeters will then seat you on the next available shuttle. Our transfers to the port run on a regular basis and will drop you off right at your ship’s terminal with plenty of time to board. Booking a pre-arranged shuttle with Go Port provides peace of mind that you’ll make it to your cruise on time and is often the best value compared to other transportation options.

If you’re flying into the Orlando Airport the day before your cruise, Go Port also offers Fly Snooze Cruise packages that include hotel accommodations, round-trip airport transportation, and cruise transfers — all for one low price. There are more than 30 Orlando and Port Canaveral area hotels to choose from, so you’ll be sure to find one that meets your travel needs.

Uber from Orlando Airport to Port Canaveral

port canaveral cruise terminal to mco

Rideshare services such as Uber have become one of the most popular forms of transportation in recent years. Booking a ride is easy with just a few taps on your phone, but waiting around for a driver in heavily trafficked areas (like the airport) can be frustrating when you’re in a time crunch to get to your cruise.

Uber also charges surge pricing, which multiplies their standard fee during high-demand times such as rush hour. This can also happen on busy cruise days as thousands of passengers are traveling from the airport to the port.

An UberX from the Orlando Airport to Port Canaveral will run you about $68.34 without factoring in surge pricing. While the app indicates this type of vehicle can accommodate up to three people, you’ll want to consider how much baggage you’re traveling with as well. Typically an UberX will only accommodate two travelers plus luggage comfortably— remember, it’s a 45-mile ride to the port. If you’re a party of three or four, you’ll most likely need to request an UberXL which increases the cost to around $84.30. It’s also important to note when returning from your cruise, there’s a very high chance you’ll be met with a hefty surge price or get stuck waiting around for an Uber to become available. Cape Canaveral is not a big city and there aren’t very many drivers in the area compared to the wave of people requesting a ride when you get off the ship.

What’s the best way to get from Orlando Airport to Port Canaveral?

Go Port’s shared shuttles are the best way to get from Orlando Airport to Port Canaveral. Our check-in counter is conveniently located at Terminal A in the Orlando Airport and we’ll drop you off right at your ship’s terminal. We’re also often the most economical choice when comparing pricing. Even if you find a great deal on a rental car, the hassle of picking up and returning the vehicle is not worth the small savings unless you’re exploring the city. Requesting a ride on-demand with Uber may seem easy, but they’re not always the most reliable option. Using a rideshare service may leave you susceptible to surge pricing or stuck waiting around for a driver to become available. Overall, Go Port shuttles are the most affordable, convenient, and reliable transportation option to get you to your Port Canaveral cruise.

E xperience the explosive growth of the cruise industry firsthand as we explore the major departure ports in the United States. Don’t be left behind; join the millions of satisfied cruisers who have discovered the ultimate vacation experience. But we know that hopping on board can be intimidating, especially when choosing the right port, ship, and cruise line. That’s why I’m here to guide you through it all.

Starting in the North Atlantic and working our way down to the South Atlantic, including the bustling ports of Florida, we’ll cover everything you need to know. We’ll then move on to the Gulf of Mexico and, finally, the beautiful Pacific. Learn about several American ports, from suggestions on getting to the port to a detailed list of all the cruise lines that sail from each location.

But that’s not all — I’ll also highlight each port’s unique features and attractions so you can make the most of your vacation before and after embarking on your cruise. Get ready for a vacation that gives you the most bang for your buck — starting with the perfect departure port.

Buckle in and get your popcorn; this will be a long one.

North Atlantic

The North Atlantic region has quite a few ports. It primarily sails to Bermuda, New England, and Canada. However, they also do trans-Atlantic and other specialty cruises from a few ports.

Pro Tip : Always label and prepare your luggage for easy transport . When driving, simply drive to the cruise terminal and hand over your bags. No need to fret if you need tape or a stapler — the friendly baggage handlers will assist you. Remember to show appreciation by tipping them before parking or returning your car.

Boston Cruise Port – Raymond L. Flynn Black Falcon Terminal (Massachusetts)

Simplify your cruise parking experience at the Flynn Cruiseport in the Seaport District near Boston Harbor. Park easily at Congress Street parking or take a free shuttle from your hotel. Boston Logan International Airport is just a quick 10-minute drive away. The MBTA Silver Line bus stops within one block of the terminal for even more convenience.

Parking will cost you $27 per night.

Sailing From Here: Celebrity, Holland America , Norwegian, Royal Caribbean, Seabourn

Points Of Interest: Boston Fish Pier, Fenway Park, Paul Revere House, Old North Church, Boston Children’s Museum, Boston Tea Party Ships & Museum.

Brooklyn Cruise Terminal (Red Hook Section, New York)

Discover the best cruise ports in New York. Brooklyn and Cape Liberty (in Bayonne, New Jersey) take center stage, with Manhattan playing a supporting role. As a premier cruise destination, New York offers voyages to Canada, the Caribbean, Europe, and beyond.

Parking at Brooklyn Cruise Port may seem challenging, but a constant flow of arrivals and departures keeps things moving. While the $45 daily fee offers stunning views of the Statue of Liberty, other convenient options are available, such as private taxis, Uber, shuttles, or the subway. For a unique experience, consider taking the train from Penn Station or Grand Central Station.

Sailing From Here: Cunard , MSC Cruises, Princess

Points Of Interest: Brooklyn Bridge, Brooklyn Botanic Garden, Prospect Park

Fun Fact: Per CLIA (Cruise Lines International Association), most cruise passengers arrive in a port city a day in advance and spend nearly $400 per person on food, hotel, and transportation.

Cape Liberty Cruise Port (New Jersey)

Parking is slightly cheaper here than at Brooklyn’s cruise port and there are overflow lots during the busy season with free shuttles available. Cars run $30 per day and RVs $60.

Sailing From Here: Celebrity , Royal Caribbean

Points Of Interest: Teardrop Memorial, Hudson River Waterfront, The Mills at Jersey Gardens (outlet mall)

Port Of Baltimore (Maryland)

I find the Baltimore cruise port one of the most accessible places to embark in the country. Parking is $15 daily (cashless) and you can walk to the terminal after parking. There is also RV parking for $30–$40 daily, depending on the size of your rig. Royal Caribbean and Carnival both offer shuttles to and from BWI airport.

Sailing From Here: Carnival, Disney, Norwegian, Princess , Royal Caribbean

Points Of Interest: National Aquarium, Inner Harbor, Maryland Zoo, Fort McHenry National Monument & Historic Shrine

South Atlantic/Florida

Welcome to the sunniest region in the world, where cruise passengers flock in droves! With state-of-the-art terminals and buzzing activity, this destination offers an incredible array of choices. However, be prepared to master the art of patience, as navigating through crowds can be challenging. As someone who has been on 54 cruises, I can attest that more than half of my voyages have departed from these ports.

Port Canaveral (Orlando, Florida)

Prepare to be amazed! Contrary to popular belief, getting to Port Orlando (also known as Port Canaveral) requires a 48-minute drive, as Orlando is not on the coast. Despite the distance and expense of transportation (an Uber is $98), Port Orlando remains the country’s busiest and most powerful cruise port. Your best option is to take the cruise shuttle from Orlando (airport or hotel) to save the hassle of getting there, traffic, and parking fees. If you decide to drive, however, keep in mind that parking costs $17 per day, including RVs.

Sailing From Here: Carnival, Disney , MSC Cruises, Norwegian, Royal Caribbean

Points Of Interest: Kennedy Space Center , Exploration Tower, Valiant Air Command Warbird Museum (in Orlando), Disney, Universal, Lake Eola Park, Harry P. Leu Gardens

Port Of Miami (Florida)

Discover the colossal cruise port just minutes away from Fort Lauderdale. PortMiami is a bustling hub, welcoming an impressive average of 12 cruise ships daily and 4.1 million passengers annually. Boasting 11 cruise terminals, it is the second busiest cruise port in the country.

While you can park at the port for $22 a day, I highly recommend avoiding the chaos by opting for Uber or a hotel shuttle. With my 10 years of experience living in Florida, I found navigating the port’s parking confusing and lacking proper signage. Thankfully, there are much simpler alternatives to reaching your cruise ship.

But fear not! Despite the initial challenges, PortMiami (known as the Cruise Capital of the World ) is renowned for its efficiency and seamless operation. Like a finely tuned machine, they ensure a hassle-free experience from start to finish. Indulge in the modern marvel that is PortMiami and embark on your dream cruise effortlessly.

Pro Tip: It is important to park in the garage that coincides with your terminal letter (example: Cruise Terminal B — Multi-Level Garage B); though terminals F, G, and V all use Garage G.

Sailing From Here: Azamara Club, Carnival, Celebrity, Disney, MSC Cruises , Norwegian, Oceania, Regent Seven Seas , Royal Caribbean, Seabourn, Virgin Voyages

Points Of Interest: Vizcaya Museum & Gardens, Bayside Marketplace, Wynwood Walls, Little Havana, Jungle Island

Port Everglades (Fort Lauderdale, Florida)

This one may throw you for a loop since Port Everglades is the cruise port you’ll want for departing out of Fort Lauderdale. It is only 3 miles from FLL/Hollywood Airport and 25 miles north of Miami International Airport. Uber or Lyft is your best bet and is relatively inexpensive. Secure parking at Port Everglades (4,000 spaces) runs $15 per day or $19 for oversized vehicles.

Sailing From Here: Carnival, Celebrity, Crystal Cruises , Cunard, Disney, Holland America, Princess, Royal Caribbean, Seabourn, Silversea, Viking Ocean

Points Of Interest: Las Olas Boulevard and Riverwalk, Bonnet House Museum & Gardens, Hugh Taylor Birch State Park, Everglades Holiday Park

Port Tampa Bay (Florida)

Tampa is a treat to sail out of, as the cruise terminal and port are well-marked and laid out. It is secure and monitored 24/7. Parking is $16 per day, or you can use Uber or Lyft for getting dropped off or picked up. Tampa International Airport is 21 minutes from the Port Tampa Bay Cruise Terminal or 90 minutes from Orlando (MCO).

Port Of San Juan (Puerto Rico)

Discover why San Juan, Puerto Rico, is the ultimate destination for incredible cruise lines. From its advantageous Atlantic Ocean location to potential cost savings, this place is a true gem. If you’re planning a trip, I recommend arriving early and staying overnight to avoid airline hiccups.

While some hotels provide free shuttle services, taxis are readily available for a quick 8-mile journey to the cruise port. Don’t miss out on the opportunity to set sail from Old San Juan, which is a vacation before the cruise vacation begins.

Gulf Of Mexico

Discover hidden gems and unbeatable prices on Gulf of Mexico cruises! Escape the crowds and embark on an adventure from Galveston, New Orleans, and Mobile. Immerse yourself in vibrant cities and soak up the magic of the gulf. Don’t miss your chance to experience the best-kept secrets of these charming destinations! I plan to include these three embarkation ports in my cruising future over the next few months.

Mobile Alabama Cruise Terminal (Alabama)

While Carnival is the only cruise line that sails from Mobile, it is an excellent option for those seeking a quick vacation option between Texas and Florida. Parking will run you $18 daily, though the closest airport is Pensacola, Florida, an hour away. This is definitely a drive to the cruise port destination. Check out the Mobile Carnival Museum or the USS Alabama in your free time.

Port Of New Orleans (NOLA, Louisiana)

A boatload of ships departs the Port of NOLA, making it the 6th busiest cruise port in the country. It is in the heart of the city with a plethora of amazing things to see and do. It is also a port for the three major river cruises (my bucket list!), which adds a feature most cruise ports don’t offer. Parking runs $25 daily at the Erato and Julia Street terminals.

Sailing From Here: American Cruise Lines , American Queen Steamboat Co., Carnival, Disney, Norwegian, Royal Caribbean, Viking River Cruises

Points Of Interest: New Orleans City Park, Jackson Square, Mardi Gras World, French Quarter, St. Louis Cathedral, National WWII Museum

Port Of Galveston (Texas)

Discover Galveston — the vibrant heart of Texas and the state’s sole major port. With its convenient location, you’ll have easy access to all the city offers. Enjoy hassle-free parking for just $18 per day (discounts available for prepaying) and take advantage of the close proximity to the cruise terminal from the lots.

Port of Galveston’s only downside? The nearest major airport is 40 minutes away in Houston. However, worry not! Numerous shuttle services are available to whisk you directly to the cruise terminal.

Fun Fact: It is hard to believe that 2.2 million cruise passengers use this terminal annually.

Sailing From Here: Carnival, Disney, Royal Caribbean

Points Of Interest: Moody Gardens , Pleasure Pier, Seawall, The Strand

The cruise ports on the West Coast of the United States offer a wide range of fabulous cities, diverse weather, and opportunities for sailing around the area, trans-Pacific crossings, and specialty cruises.

Port Of San Diego (California)

Experience the beauty and convenience of the exceptional Port of San Diego . Getting to the port is a breeze, with various parking options and a convenient cruise ship shuttle from the airport. And that’s only some of it — many cruise lines even offer a complimentary pre-night hotel room.

I personally loved taking advantage of this option before setting sail from the Port of San Diego. Book your cruise now and let the cruise line shuttle take care of the rest. San Diego’s weather is exceptional year-round and the flights are relatively quicker and smoother than in other parts of California. I call this a stress-free cruise port.

Sailing From Here: Celebrity, Disney, Holland America, Norwegian , Princess

Points Of Interest: San Diego Zoo , Gaslamp Quarter, Balboa Park, USS Midway Museum.

Port Of Los Angeles (California)

Discover the luxury and cruise lines variety at World Cruise Center at Port of Los Angeles (actually in San Pedro, California). Arriving at this massive port is a breeze, whether driving a car or using transportation options like shuttles, taxis, or Uber. Parking is $20 per day.

Avoid the high cost of taxis and enjoy a ride from LAX for just $40 with a rideshare service. From John Wayne Airport, expect to pay around $60, though nearly $100 for a taxi. Embark on your dream cruise effortlessly and at a great price from the World Cruise Center.

Sailing From Here: Azamara , Celebrity, Crystal Cruises, Cunard, Norwegian, Oceania, Princess, Seabourn, Silversea , Viking Ocean

Points Of Interest: Santa Monica Pier, Griffith Observatory, Universal Studios

Port Of Long Beach (California)

Discover the convenient and stress-free Port of Long Beach , just a stone’s throw away from the Los Angeles cruise port. As a cruise port owned by Carnival Corporation , it offers an easier and more accessible experience than LA. Set against the backdrop of the majestic Queen Mary , this gem provides an alternative West Coast sailing experience away from the bustling cities. Located just 23 miles from LAX, you can park your car for only $23 per day. Plus, ample parking options exist for oversized vehicles adjacent to the covered garage.

Points Of Interest: Knott’s Berry Farm , Long Beach Museum of Art, Aquarium of the Pacific

Port Of San Francisco (California)

For a city this big, I was surprised that the Port of San Francisco was not busier and bigger, but honestly, it is not one bit intimidating. Parking runs around $18 per day and there are many options for getting there, including bus, Uber, Lyft, and shuttles.

Sailing From Here: Crystal Cruises, Disney, Princess, Royal Caribbean

Points Of Interest: Alcatraz Island, Pier 39, Fisherman’s Wharf, Golden Gate Park

Port Of Seattle (Washington)

The cruise port of Seattle is your gateway to Alaska , so hopefully in your lifetime, you’ll explore this one for yourself. There are two terminals (Piers 91 and 66), with parking running $22–$27 per day, though shuttles and Lyft are the most popular ways to get there. The airport is 40 minutes away.
