Also known as the Carretera Federal 2 or Mexican Federal Highway 2, this scenic road winds through the rugged terrain of the Sierra de Juarez mountains, offering breathtaking views of the desert.

La Rumorosa offers opportunities for hiking and nature walks where you can enjoy the unique flora and fauna of the Baja California desert.

A popular viewpoint called Mirador Cerro del Centinela provides a panoramic vista of the surrounding mountains and desert. It’s a great spot to take stunning photos.

If you plan to drive on La Rumorosa, prepare for a fun ride : the road has plenty of hairpin turns and sharp drop-offs, so you should proceed with caution at all times. Exercise increased caution, especially during bad weather and poor visibility. 

7. Mexicali

Mexicali is often called one of the safest border towns in Mexico. Connected to Tecate via La Rumorosa, Mexicali is one of the hottest cities in Mexico with temperatures often hitting triple digits during summer.

The Chinese immigration to Mexicali dates back to the early 20th century when Chinese workers came to the region to work on the construction of the Colorado River and irrigation system.

Mexicali has a notable Chinese community, and there are areas where you can find Chinese restaurants, stores, and other businesses. 

Mexicali is also one of the starting points for the Baja 1000, a popular off-road motorsport race that takes place on the Baja California Peninsula. The city is a hub for enthusiasts and participants in the event.

8. San Quintin

Although San Quintin might be a bit too long of a drive for a day trip from San Diego, it’s worth a visit if you have a bit of extra time. San Quintin is known as an agricultural hub of Baja California thanks to its oyster farms, tomato and strawberry fields. 

But San Quintin is also an emerging travel destination. One of the top attractions in the area is Punta Mazo Natural Reserve , which is home to pristine beaches, rugged cliffs, and a group of volcanoes. I climbed one of them on my trip, and had a lot of fun! 

Punta Mazo is relatively remote and less developed compared to more touristy areas. Although you won’t find any amenities, you will enjoy the vast and untouched landscapes and lack of crowds. This remoteness adds to the appeal, if you are seeking a quieter and more off-the-beaten-path experience.

Another popular attraction near San Quintin is La Lobera , a natural sea cave located about 1 hour north of San Quintin. La Lobera is a natural formation where seawater is forced through an opening in the rocks, creating a dramatic display of water shooting into the air.

The name “La Lobera” translates to “The Sea Lion’s Den” in English. While the blowhole itself is the main attraction, visitors might also spot sea lions in the vicinity.

The rugged coastline, sandy beaches, and the Pacific Ocean backdrop around San Quintin create picturesque landscapes, making it a serene destination perfect for adventurous travelers. 

9. Bahia De Los Angeles

Also known as the Bay of LA, Bahía de los Ángeles , located on the eastern coast of the Baja California Peninsula is a picturesque and remote town known for its rugged beauty and outdoor activities like hiking, camping, snorkeling, and scuba diving.

It’a also one of the safest places in Baja California that has a slow pace of life and friendly locals.

Originally established as a mining town, Bahia de Los Angeles has developed into one of the most popular destinations for RV camping in Baja California with many visitors coming here to enjoy the tranquil setting along the Sea of Cortez. 

The bay is surrounded by stunning desert landscapes, rocky cliffs, and clear blue waters. Bahía de los Ángeles is part of the Gulf of California, known for its rich marine biodiversity. If you look on a map, you will see there are plenty of places to visit in Mexico that are near San Diego . However are all of them worth visiting? Are all of them safe? Not exactly. The US and Mexico border feature some nice places, but one must be careful. Not all cities and towns here are safe for out-of-towners, so one must be careful when exploring the border regions.

Don’t get me wrong, there are plenty of places to visit in Mexico that are safe and beautiful. There are great places to go to where you will have no worries, and tourists are common in the area. We have five great places listed here, and they are all accustomed to people visiting and you can sit back and relax. Some are even so close to San Diego, California, you can feel free to just pop on down for the day. Chances are though, you will end up wanting to stay longer.

There are some truly incredible beaches to see here, and while California has some great ones too, the activities in the water will surely be cheaper here. Diving with the whales is a sight to behold, and something you get to do if you so feel like. Just a beach bummer? That’s cool too. Are you feening for some wine and excellent Mexican food to pair with it? Just head a few hours south. Don’t mind traveling a bit further to get an excellent fusion of history, activities, and fantastic beaches? Just prepare yourself for a half day’s journey and end up in paradise.

Here are a few places to visit in Mexico that are near San Diego. They all offer some great experiences for their visitors, especially those that are just a mere few hours or so from the border. So come on down, you’re close, and you’ll definitely want to visit after reading about these.

This is an incredible spot to get the most out of your escape from San Diego. A mix of culture, amazing scenery, and outdoor activities will make for an excellent stay here. Let’s start with your water adventures. The spectacular beaches will give you a panoramic view to remember. If you’re a diver, you chances of seeing blue whales and humpbacks are pretty great if you come during February to April.

If you want to stay dry, make your way to the sand dunes and rocks for some cycling tours or repelling. Get your adrenaline going here for the intense sports available and take in the natural beauty of the surroundings.

For your dose of culture, check out the caves. Inside you will see cave painting and murals. The Sierra de San Francisco cave drawings are primitive and are even bigger than the revered European sites, like Altamira. Loreto is located 14 hours away from San Diego, but is well worth the drive. Not to mention you can make some great stops along the way…

4. Baja Wine

California offers up some great wineries, nobody is arguing that, but who can ever have enough wine? Get a taste of what Mexico offers up for its secret grape concoctions. Taste testing, winery exploring, and pairing with Mexico’s delicious flavors are all offered. There are a few wineries available to visit, and they are only a few hours away from San Diego.

3. Ensenada

If you like the wine so much, why not stay in Ensenada. You will be near the winery’s offered without being rushed back to California. Enjoy cantinas and plazas showing the area’s history and taste. This fishing city offers up some fantastic seafood feasts, so we hope you’re hungry. The beaches in the north and the south of the city will give you the getaway and relaxation you need after all that food and wine.

This hop, skip, and a jump away from San Diego is a fantastic day trip to make, if you’re a shopping addict that is. Pasaje Rodriguez is a huge area filled with shipping stalls that seem to go on forever. You can find things from unique boutique shops, to book and music stores. Young artists are always showing their creations here.

If you like to eat like you shop-taking your time and having plenty of options, then a trip to the Food Garden is in store for you. Tons of vendors gather here so you can gobble down a smorgasbord of food before your departure. This spot is less than an hour away from San Diego.

1. Rosarito Beach

It’s not like California doesn’t provide great beaches, but those who are professional beach bums will agree, there’s never a limit on how many beaches you can go to in your life. In comes Rosarito Beach. This is “The Jewel of Baja’s Gold Coast” for good reason, and plenty of people flock here to experience all that it offers.

You could choose just to relax on the stretches of beach here, or get busy with the activities. Horseback riding, all-terrain vehicle exploring, jet skiing, hand gliding, and surfing are all choices that are on the table. So which interests you more?

Only 16 miles stand between you and a two-nation vacation when visiting San Diego. Tijuana, the biggest city in Baja California, Mexico, is so close that more than 100,000 people pop over the border daily to work, attend school, go to a doctor’s appointment, shop, grab a meal, or catch a soccer match, making it one of the busiest land-border crossings in the world. 

In general, U.S. citizens have a relatively easy time getting into Mexico but often experience long wait times at customs on the return trip. Usually, the fastest and easiest ways to enter Tijuana are via automobile or pedestrian bridges. Smart Border Coalition tracks real-time wait times at all ports of entry for both options and provides answers to many frequently asked questions. 

What Is the Cheapest Way to Get From San Diego to Tijuana?

On foot. We’re not kidding. There are three pedestrian points where visitors can cross the border from San Diego County into the main Tijuana metro area: PedEast (closer to the San Ysidro Trolley stop), Otay Mesa, and the Cross Border Express (more on the latter in the flying section). PedWest, another pedestrian crossing point, closed in October of 2021 and will remain closed.

There are lots of ways to arrive at the bridges. Drive and park your car in one of the many commercial lots surrounding the ports of entry on the U.S. side. They can fill up at peak times. Rideshares and taxis can also drop you off near the entrances. (Uber drivers can shuttle passengers across the border into Mexico but cannot bring them back into the U.S.) 

Many people opt for public transit. The San Diego Trolley , a light rail system, follows the Blue Line from downtown through the Southern communities of National City, Chula Vista, Imperial Beach and terminates near the San Ysidro crossing. You can pick it up at several downtown stops, including by Petco Park and in Barrio Logan. There are some free public lots next to trolley stations from 8th Street to Beyer Boulevard. Trains are frequent from early morning to the late evening, seven days a week. One-way fare is $2.50 unless you qualify for the senior/disabled/Medicare rate of $1.25. One-day passes for adults start at $6.

Metropolitan Transit System (MTS) buses ferry people from different parts of the city to the border crossing at Otay Mesa (South Bay Rapid Bus 225 from the Santa Fe Depot in downtown and Bus 950 from the Iris Avenue Blue Line Trolley station). 

What Is the Fastest Way to Get From San Diego to Tijuana?

Depending on the day and time, the answer to this question varies. On some days, taking the trolley might be the most efficient way to cross the border. Or, parking as close as possible to the border and crossing by footbridge might be the fastest. However, if traffic is light on the I5, I805, I905, or SR125 freeways, one can usually zip across the border in a car in a matter of minutes. The return trip where everyone must go through customs/border patrol is the real time suck, especially if you come back on a Sunday or Monday. Being a member of a Trusted Traveler Program like Global Entry or NEXUS can significantly reduce your wait time as it makes you eligible to use the expedited  Ready Lanes . 

The two vehicle-crossing points are El Chaparral (San Ysidro), the main port of entry, and Otay Mesa, which connects Otay Mesa, a San Diego suburb, with the Otay Centenario borough of Tijuana. Companies like  YTS Transport  offer chauffeured car shuttle services between both countries. Ensure any hired driver has the correct permits to take you across the border or to the airport.

Mexican law requires motorists to have "proof of financial responsibility" in an accident, regardless of fault. Either carry sufficient cash to cover accident damages or purchase a temporary auto policy from a Mexican insurance company. U.S. policies do not satisfy the legal requirement. Purchase in advance online or in-person just before crossing the border. Cutting corners here can lead to serious penalties. If you're willing to take this extra step, having your own car comes in handy to get out to the beach or parts of town outside the main tourism sector.

How Long Is the Flight?

Flying to Tijuana from San Diego is an option, but it's not realistic or cost-effective, as there are no direct flights from San Diego International Airport (SAN). Getting to Tijuana International Airport (TIJ) almost always includes flying far out of the way to cities like Las Vegas, Atlanta, and Guadalajara, and at least two connections. This results in a travel day almost three times as long as the time it would take you to walk from downtown to downtown. We're talking 14 or 15 hours on Aeromexico, Volaris, Frontier, Delta, or likely some combination of those airlines.

Cross Border Xpress  (CBX) is a 390-foot pedestrian bridge that connects TIJ with a service terminal on the American side in Otay Mesa. Travelers can rent cars, catch the shuttle, exchange currency, and eat in the food truck area at the service terminal. Only TIJ-ticketed passengers can access CBX to move between countries. Round-trip crossings start at $32.

Is There a Bus That Goes From San Diego to Tijuana?

Greyhound  offers regular bus services from the San Diego Bus Station downtown (1313 National Ave.) to Tijuana Central Bus Station. The route typically takes a little more than an hour, requires a border stop, and usually costs between $13 and $25. The price depends on the day of the week, time of the day, the season, and whether you chose an economy, economy extra, or flexible class ticket.  Tufesa Internacional , which is geared more to Spanish-speaking travelers, has a route from San Ysidro to Tijuana as well, but at that point, you’re basically already there,

When Is the Best Time to Travel to Tijuana?

Tijuana experiences the same mostly mild Mediterranean weather as San Diego, so any time of year is ripe for a visit. It’s warmer from spring through fall, and summer is the best time to take in the beaches between Tijuana, Rosarito Beach, and Ensenada. Spring and summer also hold more cultural and food events, including a jazz and blues festival, Expo Artesanal, Baja Beach Fest , and the Guadalupe Valley Festival . It’s also much less likely to rain.

Do I Need a Visa to Travel to Tijuana?

All U.S. citizens must present a valid passport to go back and forth from Tijuana but do not need to secure a visa. (Permanent residents of Canada, the United Kingdom, Japan, Australia, or any country that is a member of the Schengen Area or the Pacific Alliance also don’t need entry visas unless they plan to stay longer than 180 days.) However, visitors must fill out the free Forma Migratoria Múltiple (FMM) even if it’s only a day trip. Get it at the point of entry from the Mexican border authorities. If you plan to stay in Mexico longer than seven days, you will have to purchase the 180-day FMM permit for approximately $30. If you plan to conduct business while in Tijuana, you will have to apply for a business visitor visa and comply with various other rules set by the Mexican government. 

What Is There to Do in Tijuana?

Tijuana is a large, modern, cosmopolitan city with museums, fine dining, and cultural offerings that has been undergoing quite a renaissance over the last decade. Spend the day wandering down alleys, tasting tacos from street carts, sipping beers from the bustling craft scene, or shopping for piñatas, silver jewelry, brightly colored arts and crafts, or cheap medicine. Avenida Revolución (Revolution Avenue), known to locals as La Revu, is the city’s main drag and is within walking distance of the pedestrian border bridges. You can buy souvenirs and pay to have your picture taken with a Zonkey, a spectacle where they paint a donkey with zebra stripes. The street has also been developed to include art galleries, shops with luxury items (like expensive denim lines and home design goods), boutique hotels, and some hip hangs like Cine Tonalá. Mercado Hidalgo, a traditional open market, is a popular stop to buy Mexican ingredients and handmade tortillas. Stop at Plaza Santa Cecilia, one of the oldest squares in town, to see the iconic arch and possibly hear live music. Explore the Centro Cultural Tijuana, housed in an architecturally-memorable spherical building and the adjacent Museo de las Californias. Sports fans can get tickets to a Xolos soccer game or a lucha libre match. You can also eat a Caesar salad where it was invented (yep, Tijuana in 1924) or sample dishes like ramen and sausages at the trendy Telefónica Gastro Park. The best time to cross the border would be early mornings or late evenings, as the afternoon seems to be peak crossing time. Try to avoid crossing on a Sunday or Monday, as those days tend to be more overcrowded. Visit the U.S. Customs and Border Protection website for real-time wait estimates.

A negative COVID test is not required to cross the border. Upon arrival, you will be asked to complete a health declaration form. All U.S. residents returning to the country must have a negative COVID test, except when traveling on land .

Your Guide to Crossing the San Ysidro Border

San Diego is home to California’s southernmost city, Imperial Beach, and shares a border with the popular Tijuana, Mexico. So, how does one get from one city to the next? They’re right next door… but there is still an international border in the way.

The San Ysidro Land Port of Entry is by far the busiest land crossing point between the United States and Mexico. The most easily accessible border crossing between the hubs of Tijuana, Mexico, and San Diego, California, can be crossed by foot or via the connected El Chaparral vehicle crossing point, providing access for long and short-term travelers.

This border crossing location is easy to navigate, though it can be overwhelming if you’ve never crossed into a different country by land before. This port of entry will offer a different experience than that of an airport or cruise terminal, and we are here to give you some insight.

About the San Ysidro Border

Note: As of May 12, 2023, non-U.S. travelers entering the United States via all routes do not need to be fully vaccinated against COVID-19 nor provide proof of vaccination.

The San Ysidro zone of entry is the Tijuana border crossing location that is most used to get to Baja California.

When it comes down to it, this port of entry, combined with the El Chaparral vehicle lanes, is considered the busiest of the international crossings in the world, based on individual and vehicular crossing from one country to the next. 

The border crossing, which can sustain immigration, quick travel, individual and family trips, and other customs needs, is the busiest international land border inspection station and crossing in the Western Hemisphere. That is no small feat.

The San Ysidro border sees over 106 million individual crossings each year, while a whopping 48 million cars and trucks also annually pass through the El Chaparral section of San Ysidro. 

Established in 1970, the entry zone has grown to see over 90,000 daily commuters crossing between these two nearby cities. In the same way that one might take a day trip to a nearby suburb or work in the next town over, locals of the region use the San Ysidro crossing frequently for various reasons.

San Ysidro Expansion Project Overview

There was a huge expansion project that was meant to maintain the San Ysidro land port as the most accessible, busiest of the three ports. The goal was to do this without too many long lines and wait times holding up the pedestrian bridge or El Chaparral vehicle lanes.

The completion of this expansion project came in 2019, 8 years after its 2011 initiation, and focused on the following:

• Expanding and modernizing the existing land port for the community
• Creating a "Port of the Future" that included sustainable design and technology
• Adding 38 new vehicle inspection booths
• Adjusting and realigning the lanes of Interstate 5 connected to El Chaparral
• Unveiling a new, bidirectional, pedestrian crossing and a multimodal transit center

The history of this Tijuana border crossing, combined with its recent enhancements shows why this is one of the three ports in San Diego that not only has the longest border wait times but also can sustain the most travel. If you're looking to go to Baja for a weekend, or travel throughout Mexico, this is likely the customs point you'll be utilizing.

Required Documentation – U.S. to Mexico

You may be asking, before all else, what documentation you’ll want to have prepared before going across the Tijuana border crossing from the United States to Mexico. Most of these requirements are set, regardless of age, for all members of each community.

Mexican Nationals:

• Valid passport, INE credential, birth certificate, consular card or Mexican nationality certificate

Foreigners:

• Valid passport (book or card)
• FMM Form (Forma Migratoria Múltiple) Complete your FMM form here*
• Payment of migratory rights (only if your stay is longer than 7 days)

Required Documentation - Mexico to U.S.

Now, let’s talk about what you might need on your trip from Mexico to the United States.

U.S. Citizens or Residents:

• Valid passport (book or card) or Permanent Resident Card
• Valid passport
• I-94 permit. All passengers, except for U.S. citizens and residents, traveling more than 25 miles (approx. 40 km) from the border or staying more than 30 days in the United States will be required to prepay and complete their provisional I-94 permit before crossing through points of entry.

Using the San Ysidro Port of Entry

It’s quite easy to cross between Mexico and the United States via the Tijuana border crossing at San Ysidro's land border inspection station.

You'll speak to border protection officials after waiting in line to cross the U.S.-Mexico border, but more often than not conversations are quick.

Anyone coming into Tijuana to visit from California will need to fill out an FMM, or a Visitor’s Permit, which is free if the trip is less than 7 days long.

Much like you get forms to fill out when entering the country on an airplane, this is a quick and simple form declaring your entry. You’ll do this for days trips and longer stays alike, whether you pass through on foot or in a car.

Getting to the San Ysidro Border from San Diego

How does one get to the border’s port of entry, you may ask. If you’re intending to drive down to Tijuana from San Diego, simply take the Interstate 5 highway going south and follow signs for the International Border. Pretty simple stuff, huh?

If you want to walk across the border to avoid parking, driving, or any other part of dealing with your car, utilize San Diego’s trolley system instead. You can take the Blue Line running south until you end at the last stop: San Ysidro, which makes the directions very easy to follow.

Then, wait in line either on the highway or behind other pedestrians on the walkway into Mexico.

The San Ysidro Port of Entry is not the only way to get between Tijuana and San Diego, though. Two other options may offer more ease and/or speed, depending on where you’re coming from, how you are traveling, and other factors.

The 3 San Diego Border Crossing Locations

Let’s go over the 3 different San Diego ports of entry that connect the U.S. to Mexico. Each has benefits and uses that make it unique. The options range across the San Diego region, from east to west, and connect SoCal with Baja California quite nicely.

1.     San Ysidro Land Port of Entry

This is the biggest, most accessible crossing in the region, and is the one that most visitors will use if they opt to visit Tijuana for a day. In fact, if you don’t have a car, the trolley system makes this by far the best option for a quick trip to the border. 

The busiest of entry points, the wait time may be longer, but is more ‘on the way’ as you travel between both cities and their downtown spaces. It is the furthest Tijuana border crossing to the west and tends to be a hub for both pedestrians and drivers in the community.

2.     Otay Mesa Border Crossing

Otay Mesa border crossing, on the other hand, is much faster to cross. It is located east of the San Ysidro ports, which makes it less convenient for anyone looking to pass between central San Diego and Tijuana regions.

Entering Mexico from the United States side of the border is done via the I-5 or I-805, and, though it's faster to cross, it is much more difficult to access from the Tijuana side.

3.     CBX (Tijuana Airport) Border Crossing

The CBX, Cross Border Xpress, is the 3rd crossing point between San Diego and Tijuana, and services only travelers who hold boarding passes through the Tijuana International Airport, along with their identification.

Designed as a pedestrian bridge, most often utilized for southbound pedestrian crossing, the border wait times are lower here as fewer travelers enter Baja California through the airport's 2 connected terminal areas.

This is the fastest of all the options, with exponentially shorter wait times, and is the most convenient by far if you are using the Tijuana airport’s services.

Only 26 miles off the coast and with regular Catalina Express catamaran service departing from Dana Point, this weekend getaway is only two hours from San Diego (a 90-minute boat ride plus 30 minutes to drive to Dana Point).

This mainly summer-only weekend destination is high in the San Jacinto mountains of Riverside County, but only a two-hour drive from downtown San Diego. The mountain resort has a few streets of eclectic shops and art galleries, along with restaurants and cafés.

You can visit during the winter, but there are no ski resorts in the area, and the mountain roads can be difficult to drive on in the snow. Some businesses shut down as well.

Idyllwild is a jumping-off point for hundreds of miles of hiking trails , for all levels of hikers. The alpine landscape, filled with huge pine trees, is beautiful and looks like something out of northern Alaska, rather than Southern California. To extend your getaway, you can drive down Highway 74, known as the Palms to Pines Scenic Byway, which connects Idyllwild with Palm Desert, near Palm Springs. It's less than an hour's drive away.

The family-owned Idyllwild Inn has been giving guests an authentic mountain experience since its opening in 1904. You're nestled in the forest, with vintage (but nicely appointed) cabin accommodations. It's peaceful and isolated yet within walking distance of the town's many galleries and shops.

The majestic, giant redwood trees of Sequoia National Park and Kings Canyon National Park are about a six-hour drive from San Diego. Sequoia National Park is in Central California, in the southern part of the Sierra Nevada mountains. Visitors get two national parks right next to each other, as Kings Canyon National Park is adjacent to Sequoia.

The giant redwood trees are breathtaking, and at around 3,500 years old, some are the oldest living things on Earth. These redwoods, some of which have grown to be 300 feet tall, with a trunk almost 30 feet in diameter, are fascinating to explore and walk beneath. There are a number of campgrounds , as well as four lodges, located inside Sequoia and Kings Canyon National Park.

John Muir Lodge , named for the celebrated naturalist who fought to preserve the High Sierra, is a great place to stay within a few minutes of Grant Grove and its towering sequoias. It's a modern lodge constructed of stone and timber, located in Grant Grove Village. The lodge is open seasonally, from the end of March through the end of October.

How old are your kids? Most kids below age of 15 or so really couldn't give a rats behind about seeing the border. Take them to Seaworld or LegoLand instead.

There's a bridge on Camino De La Plaza over I-5 right before it enters Mexico. That's good for people watching IMO. You'll also get a close up view of the largest land border crossing in the Northern hemisphere.

For something a little different, you could head out to Campo Rail Museum and let the kids ride the train along the border, and stop at the tunnel just before the border. You are closer to Tecate at this point.

Borrego Springs

About 90 miles northeast of San Diego, Borrego Springs lies in the middle of the 600,000-acre Anza-Borrego Desert State Park . As a designated International Dark Sky Community and the only California town surrounded by a state park, it's an ideal weekend getaway for nature lovers.

The town also boasts charming shops, restaurants, galleries, and annual events like the Borrego Springs Film Festival , held each January. The Borrego Art Institute includes a gallery, pottery studio, workshop, and children’s programs, and provides classes, shows, and community events. Dive into the streets of Old Town, brimming with people dressed in vivid colors, and listen to the live music play among local families enjoying the holiday. Here, you can get your face painted to resemble La Caterina, the female skeleton who is one of the most recognizable symbols of Day of the Dead celebrations, before joining a candlelight procession as the sun dips over a glowing Californian sky.

Eat a meal in Barrio Logan

One of the first things you will see as you drive into the neighborhood of Barrio Logan is the line snaked around a hole-in-the-wall joint with a green sign that reads Las Cuatro Milpas – a third-generation Mexican restaurant that serves up some of the best home-made tortillas, carnitas and tacos. Stop here to pick up some food to go (they have limited seating, and only take cash).

Alternatively, try an El Xolito – a salsa verde-laden tribute to the Tijuana-style hot dog – paired with a tangy michelada cocktail at Barrio Dogg . Chef Pablo started selling hot dogs out of the back of an Impala lowrider, and quickly became a local favorite for his playful flavors (think spicy cactus fruit salsa, smoked poblanos and wasabi sesame seeds), and self-described “Chicano comfort food”.

The neighborhood is Mexican in essence – created by the influx of Mexican refugees to the area during the Mexican revolution – and contrasts the hipster feel of Little Italy, for example, where organic produce and natural skincare stalls reign. Spend the afternoon wandering through this emerging art district’s galleries, breweries, boutiques and craft coffee shops.

Hop across the Mexican border for a Tijuana road trip

Las Vegas is now universally known as the place where Americans (and everyone else) go for a weekend of debauchery. However, during Prohibition in the 1920s, Tijuana in Mexico was more Vegas than Vegas is today – a place where Southern Californians could escape for days of low-key boozing and gambling. Today, teenagers in SoCal still steal across the border, unbeknownst to their parents, to experience the freedoms of “TJ”.

To get a feel for Baja California, spend the day with Turista Libre (Free Tourist) – founded by a former journalist who helps people discover the many facets of Tijuana. The USS Midway is the longest-serving American aircraft carrier of the 20th century, having played host to more than 200,000 sailors over the course of its 47 years of service. This historical relic offers patrons the opportunity to explore approximately 60 different exhibits and more than 30 restored aircraft, including some that have flown in World War II, Operation Desert Storm and the Korean War. Just across the bay from San Diego, Coronado Beach is popular with families and couples alike thanks to its long shoreline (affording plenty of room for beachgoers), clean sands, peaceful atmosphere and idyllic location in the "Crown City" (in Spanish, "Coronado" means "crowned one"). In fact, not only is it one of the best beaches in San Diego , it's also considered one of the best California beaches .

While you won't have access to a bustling boardwalk (like that at Mission Beach), you will have plenty of picturesque scenery to admire (besides the surf): magnificent mansions sit behind the beach on Ocean Boulevard. And the Hotel del Coronado – a National Historic Landmark that made its debut in 1888 and appeared in the 1959 Marilyn Monroe film "Some Like It Hot" – is perched just beyond the sand. When you're not boogie boarding or building a sand castle, heed the advice of recent visitors and simply walk the approximately 1.75-mile-long shoreline. Even if you're visiting San Diego during the winter season (December through February) when the water is a little too chilly for swimming, you should still plan to make a stop here for the scenery. And if you enjoy ice skating, the Hotel Del Coronado offers the unique opportunity to ice skate right alongside the beach.

Petco Park Petco Park

Often considered one of the top baseball stadiums in the country, Petco Park is a must-visit for San Diego Padres fans or for anyone who wants to witness a baseball game and take in the striking San Diego skyline. The park, which was built in 2004, sits beside the city's historic Gaslamp Quarter in San Diego's East Village. The stadium reflects its Southern California location through the light sandstone exterior and decorative palm trees and vegetation. San Diego's notoriously sunny and dry weather also makes Petco Park an ideal baseball stadium: The Padres rarely see home games rained out, so it's highly unlikely visitors will need to worry about their plans getting canceled.

The stadium offers tours for anyone who wants to learn more about the ins and outs of the park. The daily tours highlight the press box, the dugout, the Padres Hall of Fame and more. Tours last about 80 minutes and tickets cost $38 for adults. Visitors can purchase tickets online or in person at the Western Metal Supply Building Ticket Windows on Seventh Ave and K Street up to 30 minutes before the tour starts. (The tour schedule differs depending on game days.) On game days, visitors can take a pregame tour. These tours cover most of the same sights as the daily tours, but also let visitors witness the excitement and energy of game preparation; game-day tours may also include the opportunity to watch batting practice. Prices vary depending on the day and time of the tour.

Legoland California Legoland California

Legoland California features much more than the company's ubiquitous plastic building blocks. It boasts an amusement park – one of the top California theme parks – with more than 60 rides and a 10-acre water park with several slides. It also has an interactive aquarium with more than 6,000 animals. Other activities include Lego-related live shows and 4D movies. For a low-key activity, head to MINILAND USA, which features miniature replicas of major cities like San Francisco, Las Vegas, New York City and Washington, D.C., all constructed from millions of Legos. New in 2023, there's also a replica of San Diego that includes Lego reconstructions of all of the city's famous landmarks. 

If this seems like too much to do in a single day, you can reserve one of the resort's hotel rooms , which, of course, are outfitted in decor inspired by Lego product lines. What's more, each room has a separate sleeping area for kids. The park itself houses several restaurants serving kid-approved fare like burgers and pizza, as well as a barbecue eatery that appeals to adults thanks to its craft beer menu.

La Jolla Cove La Jolla Cove free

La Jolla Cove is the jewel of La Jolla. Located across the water from La Jolla Shores , La Jolla Cove may not be much in terms of a beach, but its striking beauty and snorkeling reputation more than make up for it among recent visitors. The site is an ecologically protected area that is home to vibrant wildlife both in and out of the water. In fact, it's not uncommon to spot sea lions hanging close to the cove's bluffs and tide pools. Oftentimes, they even come on the beach. 

This is also an excellent spot for beginner snorkelers. Advanced snorkelers should take advantage of the sea caves located along the bluffs, but only with a guide. If you aren't an advanced snorkeler but still want to see the caves, you can take a kayak tour , or visit the Cave Store, which is home to a human-made tunnel that goes directly inside the Sunny Jim Cave. Travelers say even if you don't plan on swimming or snorkeling, you should still visit the attraction for its picture-perfect setting.

Mission Beach Mission Beach free

Mission Beach – one of the top San Diego beaches – is popular with families thanks to its variety of amenities and laid-back vibe. In addition to its approximately 2-mile-long boardwalk, the beach is also home to Belmont Park , a beachfront amusement park featuring arcades and numerous rides, including the Giant Dipper wooden roller coaster – a nearly 100-year-old National Historic Landmark. Take a trip back in time at Old Town San Diego State Historic Park, an approximately mile-long and half-mile-wide area contained stretch of preserved or reconstructed shops and houses on the grounds of the first European settlement in California. Widely considered the "birthplace of California," Old Town San Diego shows visitors what it was like to live through different eras of California history, from the time of Spanish explorers to the California gold rush. Some important stops include the adobe Casa de Estudillo, a house built in the 1820s that is one of the oldest surviving Mexican-Spanish-style structures of its type in the state. The park also shelters a reconstruction of San Diego's first brick building, a courthouse first built in the mid-19th century. Nearby the park, the Junípero Serra Museum, named for the Spanish missionary who helped colonize San Diego and other areas of California, is also a must-see because its architecture and location have helped make it a famous San Diego landmark. It sits on a hill in Presidio Park near green spaces, picnic areas and memorials, and it provides great views of the city and the Pacific Ocean. The Whaley House, another of the city's early brick buildings (and one some believe to be haunted), also sits near the park.

There are plenty of shops in the Old Town area, many of which sell handcrafted items from Mexico and other Latin American countries. The town's Mexican heritage is also preserved through the various restaurants that dish out authentic Mexican food. Favorite eateries include El Agave, Cafe Coyote and Tahona Bar. Previous visitors enjoyed simply strolling through the streets, relaxing on the green spaces and listening to mariachi bands. Torrey Pines State Natural Reserve Torrey Pines State Natural Reserve

This oceanfront reserve features 1,750 acres of unspoiled land, including the Torrey pine, America's rarest pine tree. There are approximately 3,000 Torrey pines in the reserve alone, and aside from San Diego, the only other place in the country the pines grow are on Santa Rosa Island off the coast of Santa Barbara . The reserve also houses one of Southern California's last salt marshes and waterfowl refuges. What does that mean for you? Plenty of hiking opportunities (8 miles to be exact). Trails offer a chance to get up close and personal with the attraction's famously beautiful sandstone ravines and badlands, as well as breathtaking views of the coastline. And if you come during the spring, you'll see wildflowers on full display.

Popular trails include the short Guy Fleming Trail (0.7 miles round trip), which features two ocean overlooks, and the longer Razor Point Trail (1.4 miles round trip), which tours more of the sandstone geological features of the reserve. There is also the nearly mile-long Beach Trail that leads to Torrey Pines State Beach. Of all San Diego's beaches , a long walk along Torrey Pines State Beach is a must simply for its views of the towering sandstone cliffs that border it.

Spanning 100 acres in Balboa Park , the San Diego Zoo is not only one of the largest zoos in the country, it's also home to one of the largest collections of rare and endangered animals in the world (more than 12,000 animals in total). Amur leopards, jaguars, red pandas, giraffes, elephants and koalas (the largest collection outside of Australia) are just a few of the many animals that call the San Diego Zoo home. The exhibits are linked by an expansive series of trails, such as the Monkey Trail, the Hippo Trail or the Tiger Trail. On these designated pathways, you'll come face to face with numerous exciting creatures, including hippos and bonobos in the Lost Forest, polar bears in the Northern Frontier, rhinos in the Urban Jungle or Chinese alligators in the Discovery Outpost. You'll need plenty of energy – and a map (or smartphone app) – to see everything the zoo has to offer. Should your feet grow weary while exploring, the zoo offers a 35-minute guided bus tour of the park. There's also the Skyfari Aerial Tram that transports visitors from one end of the park to the other, offering a bird's-eye view of the exhibits below. The zoo also hosts animal presentations and animal encounter programs daily, and houses a 4D movie theater that screens educational wildlife films. 

Travelers almost unanimously agree that the San Diego Zoo is the best zoo they have ever visited. Recent visitors were impressed with the vast number of animals on display and the various activities. In fact, many said a daylong visit isn't enough time to see everything. Travelers suggest wearing quality walking shoes, as the distance between some exhibits is considerable. Some recommended hopping on the Kangaroo Bus that stops at four different places in the park, going on the guided bus tour or taking the Skyfari just for the views alone. Though a few reviewers express disappointment with the amount of walking involved and the high prices of admission and concession, visitors say the experience is worth it.

If you're looking for a more affordable alternative to SeaWorld San Diego , consider this small aquarium in La Jolla. Located at the Scripps Institute of Oceanography at the University of California San Diego, the Birch Aquarium overlooks the Pacific Ocean, the source of the fish and invertebrates housed in its more than 60 habitats.

Creatures here include sea turtles, sharks and seahorses (which are a key focus of its conservation efforts). The interactive institution has outdoor pools that allow visitors to have hands-on experiences with young sharks, rays and sea cucumbers. It also offers daily behind-the-scenes tours. Other highlights include a two-story, 70,000-gallon giant kelp forest and a blue penguin exhibit (blue penguins are the world's smallest penguins).

This is where children can have their photos taken with some of their favorite puppet characters (or adults dressed to look like them) or hear them tell stories. Sesame Place also has a variety of themed rides, including Super Grover’s Box Car Derby (a family-friendly roller coaster) and the Sunny Day Carousel, as well as numerous water slides. Sesame Place also stages live parades and shows featuring Bert, Ernie and the rest of the gang. In addition, it has several on-site eateries, such as Oscar's Grouchy Grub and Grover's Grill.

Visitors – adult ones, anyway – point out this is primarily a place for children to romp and may be of limited interest to anyone else. Some say that despite the "Sesame Street" trappings, it’s essentially a water park. (Indeed, it was adapted from the former SeaWorld Aquatica San Diego water park.) And others grumble that it can get rather expensive. Even so, many say that if you enter knowing what to expect, and with companions of the appropriate age in tow, you can have a magical time here.

Pacific Beach – one of the top San Diego beaches – is popular with college students thanks to its lively atmosphere and proximity to bars and restaurants. Families looking for a quieter stretch of sand may want to venture a little farther south to Mission Beach . Pacific Beach is a popular surf spot that's home to Tourmaline Surfing Park, which is known for its slow waves that are ideal for novices. This section of Pacific Beach is not swimmable, but even if you don't want to try your hand at surfing it's still a fun place to watch others ride the waves, according to past travelers.

Visitors can walk out onto the seawall to watch the seals from above, and many agreed Children's Pool was one of the highlights of their San Diego trip. They suggest bringing binoculars to see the seals and jackets as it can get chilly on the seawall. They also warn the abundance of seals can sometimes result in a rather pungent scent, but seeing the animals in their natural habitat is worth it.

The Maritime Museum offers a hands-on look at San Diego's days as a bustling seaport. Belmont Park Belmont Park

A trip to San Diego is not complete without a visit to beachfront amusement park and boardwalk Belmont Park. The park, which has been in operation since 1925, offers something for everyone. Those looking for a thrill can ride the iconic Giant Dipper Roller Coaster and the spinning Beach Blaster, while those who prefer something calmer can enjoy the carousel, go mini golfing or hit the arcade. Additional activities and attractions include rock climbing, bumper cars, zip lining and laser tag. Despite the park's busy location ( Mission Beach ), previous visitors were pleased that the lines were usually short. However, they advise going in the morning or evening to minimize wait times regardless. Belmont Park also features a variety of retails shops and equipment rental vendors. Visitors also enjoy Plunge San Diego, the park's indoor pool that features beach views.

Belmont Park serves typical amusement park fare (like hot dogs, ice cream and burgers). The park is also home to a handful of upscale restaurants, including seafood and sushi spot Cannonball, which offers one of the city's largest rooftops and overlooks Mission Beach.

Torrey Pines Gliderport Torrey Pines Gliderport

Travelers can take in Torrey Pines' unique coastal scenery from a new perspective at Torrey Pines Gliderport. The gliderport is one of the top spots in California for paragliding, hang gliding, remote control models and sailplanes. In operation for almost a century, this unique adventure hub allows visitors to witness the beautifully preserved California coastline from above. Each tandem paragliding and hang gliding flight (in which you fly with an instructor) lasts 20 to 25 minutes and gives visitors the chance to witness the sandstone cliffs, golf courses and vibrant water from the sky before landing back where they started – 350 feet above Black's Beach. (Or, depending on wind conditions, gliders may land on the beach itself and hike back to the top of the cliff.) Anyone of any age can sign up for a tandem gliding ride, but minors must get formal approval from their parents or guardians.

Visitors say the rides are worth the price because it's a once-in-a-lifetime experience for many; they rave about the guides who made them feel safe and also made the ride fun.

SeaWorld San Diego SeaWorld San Diego

Though you may spot wildlife at any one of San Diego's beaches (especially Pacific and Mission beaches) none put on quite as good a show as the performers at SeaWorld. Here, you'll get to see a range of animals, including dolphins, California sea lions, California otters and sea turtles, among others. As for the rides, travelers love the lightning-fast Manta roller coaster, but caution against the Journey to Atlantis or Shipwreck Rapids rides if you don't want to get wet. In 2022, the park added the Emperor, which it bills as California's tallest and fastest roller coaster with a 14-story vertical drop and speeds of up to 60 mph. For something a little more low-key, head to any one of the park's animal exhibits, such as the underwater shark-viewing tunnel or the penguin habitat, which features nearly 400 penguins. There's also the Sesame Street Bay of Play (included in your SeaWorld general admission ticket), which features various wet and dry playgrounds, as well as a bounce house, climbing structure and smaller rides suited for children and toddlers.

Recent visitors had a blast at SeaWorld, especially those with kiddos in tow. Travelers say you can't miss a show, with many being fond of the dolphin show in particular. Make sure to arrive early though, as lines can get long. Travelers also highly recommended wearing quality walking shoes and bringing an extra jacket or change of clothes in case you get wet on the rides or at the shows (there's a splash zone for most). Travelers who didn't bring a change of clothes said they were miserable walking around the park wet and balked at the high price of clothing available at the park.

Cabrillo National Monument Cabrillo National Monument

The southernmost tip of Point Loma is where you'll find the Cabrillo National Monument. The statue depicts Juan Rodriguez Cabrillo who, in 1542, was the first European explorer to navigate the California coast. Situated about 10 miles southwest of downtown San Diego, this monument is much more than just a memorializing effigy. The main reason people make the journey to the monument is for its incredible views. From the monument, you can enjoy sweeping views of the Pacific as well as downtown San Diego, Coronado, and on a clear day, the mountains of Tijuana, Mexico.

Once you've gotten your fill from the top, walk or drive down Cabrillo Road to experience the Point Loma Tide Pools, or take a scenic walk along the coastal trail. There's also the 2.5-mile Bayside Trail that cascades down into the east side of the point and ends right above the bay waters. For those more interested in the historical aspect of the attraction, the National Park Service site features ranger talks further explaining the story behind the Cabrillo Monument as well as the restored Old Point Loma Lighthouse, located a short walk south from the monument on Humphreys Road. 

Mt. Soledad National Veterans Memorial Mt. Soledad National Veterans Memorial free

Situated in La Jolla, less than 3 miles south of La Jolla Shores , the Mt. Soledad National Veterans Memorial was built in 1954 to honor every U.S. veteran, living or deceased, from the Revolutionary War to the present day. Along with a massive cross, there are also a series of 11 walls displaying more than 3,500 granite plaques devoted to individual military persons and their accomplishments. Volunteer docents are on hand to answer questions. The memorial conducts ceremonies honoring veterans each Friday morning as well as special events on holidays like Memorial Day and Veterans Day.

In addition to its solemn purposes, the site atop its namesake mountain boasts exceptional views of the Pacific Ocean, downtown San Diego and, to the east, the mountains. Visitors frequently remark on the beautifully realized tribute to servicemen and women, as well as the unrivaled views of the surrounding area.

Silver Strand State Beach Silver Strand State Beach

Situated on a sand-spit between Coronado and Imperial Beach, Silver Strand State Beach stretches for 2 ½ miles on the Pacific Ocean and another half-mile on San Diego Bay and offers exceptional views of both bodies of water. A few miles from Cabrillo National Monument , Sunset Cliffs Natural Park is another excellent place for ocean views in Point Loma. Situated about 9 miles due west of downtown San Diego, Sunset Cliffs stretches across 68 acres and runs 1.5 miles along Point Loma peninsula's western shoreline. The dramatic sandstone cliffs and untouched vegetation along with its stunning ocean vistas make for an unforgettable stroll. The area is also home to a few secluded beaches as well, though getting to them can be tricky. There is a beach popular with locals at the beginning of Cordova Street off of Sunset Cliffs Boulevard, but you have to traverse down the steep cliffs to get there. For an easier descent, head to the end of Sunset Cliffs Boulevard at Ladera Street and take a walk down the available stairway. It won't lead you to the beach, but it will get you just above the crashing waves. You can reach the sand by wading through water on the rocky shore. Nicknamed Garbage Beach for the kelp covering the rocks, the area is pretty popular with surfers, so expect to see lots of locals catching waves. If you venture farther up into Sunset Cliffs Natural Park, you'll find plenty of walking trails right along the ocean and through the coastal scrub that dot the area. 

As its name implies, sunset is a popular time to visit the park and recent visitors say arguably the best. If you want to avoid the crowds at dusk, try to plan a mid-week trip rather than a weekend visit. Travelers recommend bringing along a sweatshirt in case the ocean breeze gets a little too chilly. Past visitors also suggest using the restroom before stopping here as there are no facilities on-site. You can get to Sunset Cliffs via public transportation. If you're staying downtown, take the trolley to Old Town Transit Center then catch the No. 35 bus and it will take you to the beginning of the cliffs. Sunset Cliffs has no opening or closing hours, though it's best to go when there's light for maximum visibility. Learn about Mexico’s cultural history

With 23 exhibition halls and the world’s largest collection of ancient Mexican art, you could spend a few days at the National Museum of Anthropology in Mexico City. Laid out in chronological order, it culminates in the Aztec Hall, where you’ll find the famous Aztec Calendar or Stone Sun (pictured). Other highlights include the statue of Aztec god Xochipilli and a peacock feather and gold thread headdress made for the Aztec ruler Moctezuma II. Don’t miss the El Paraguas stone sculpture in the courtyard.

Looking for something a bit more unusual? Take a two-hour canal ride from Mexico City and head to the Island of the Dolls. This accidental tourist attraction was created by reclusive local man Julian Santana Barrera, who died in 2001. He collected and hung the dolls to appease the spirit of a young girl he believed to be haunting the woods. The area was declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1987.

Travel back in time and discover how Mexico’s most famous tipple was originally made during a tour on the Tequila Express . Explore the ancient Chichen Itza

One of Mexico’s most famous Maya sites, the magnificent Chichen Itza in the Yucatan dates back to around AD 800. The focal point is the 78-foot-high (24m) Temple of Kukulkan, also known as El Castillo (pictured). Created as a physical calendar, it aligns with the sun so perfectly that on the spring and summer equinox, it creates a shadow of a serpent slithering down the steps.

Try authentic Mexican street food

Eat like the locals in Mexico City and tuck into the array of world-class street foods on offer. Start your day with tamales – Mexico’s favorite breakfast. These consist of dough wrapped around meat, vegetables and fruit, served in a banana leaf. Just make sure you order by 10am as they often sell out early. You’ll also find tortillas, tacos, burritos and enchilada stalls (and holes in the wall) throughout the city.

One of Mexico’s greatest natural wonders, the Copper Canyon is an immense series of valleys and ridges covering 25,000 square miles (64,000sq km). That’s four times larger than the Grand Canyon. Take a scenic tour through this spectacular landscape aboard the Copper Canyon Train . The four-hour journey between Los Mochis and Chihuahua operates one train daily in each direction. You must buy tickets in advance.

The largest known vertical shaft in the world, the 1,200-feet-deep (366m) Cave of Swallows is so big you could fit the Eiffel Tower inside – or the Statue of Liberty twice. Located in San Luis Potosi, in central Mexico, it’s home to thousands of birds and in recent years has become popular with base jumpers. Local guides offer tours but you may not be allowed to enter in wet weather, so it's best visited during the dry season.

'Planet parade' 2024: How to view the astronomical event

Get ready skywatchers, another astronomical event will take place on June 3.

A planetary alignment, or a "planet parade" according to the internet, where we'll see six planets – Jupiter, Mercury, Uranus, Mars, Neptune and Saturn – grace our sky in the predawn hours, according to StarWalk.space , a stargazing and astronomical website.

How does the alignment happen?

The planets orbit the sun continuously in the solar system . The planets will slowly catch up to one another over time. Because they are all traveling along the same path, the ecliptic , as they pass Earth, it appears as though they are aligned, according to NASA . However, the alignment formation will be short-lived since each planet moves at different speeds, depending on its distance from the sun.

Where to look for the planet alignment

Looking in the eastern sky the planetary alignment will be visible almost everywhere in the Northern Hemisphere, weather permitting.

You'll need high-powered binoculars to view the majority of the planets – Mercury and Jupiter will be extremely low in the sky. Uranus will be fairly dim and Neptune will appear star-like with binoculars due to its distance from Earth. But Mars and Saturn should be visible with the naked eye.

Planet alignments aren't extremely rare, especially with two to four planets. They do occur several times each year. With five or more planets aligning, it is less common.

The last planetary alignment seen in the Northern Hemisphere was on April 8.

When will the planets align again?

Here's when StarWalk.space predicts the next six- and 7-planetary alignments will happen:

◾ June 3: Six planets – Mercury, Mars, Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus and Neptune.

◾ Aug. 28: Six planets – Mercury, Mars, Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus and Neptune.

◾ Jan. 18: Six planets – Mercury, Mars, Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus and Neptune

◾ Feb. 28: Seven planets – Mercury, Venus, Mars, Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus and Neptune. (The last time all seven planets aligned was on April 8 during the total solar eclipse).

◾ Aug. 29, 2025: Six planets – Mercury, Venus, Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus and Neptune.
