Written by Michael Law Updated May 11, 2023

Author Michael Law lives about two hours from Blue Mountain and enjoys visiting in summer and winter.

Blue Mountain has long been a preferred four-season destination for the inhabitants of Southern Ontario. Only 2.5 hours from Toronto, this small town at the base of Blue Mountain ski hill is an easy weekend getaway from the city with plenty of fun things to see and do for the entire family.

A street at the base of the hill in Blue Mountain

The small pedestrian-only village at the base of Blue Mountain is a delightful place to visit for a good session of retail therapy. Boutiques, sporting goods stores, home décor, and clothing stores all beckon you to wander in and look around. In the winter, you'll find the latest downhill ski equipment and fashions to ensure you look your best on the hill. Come summer, the trendiest clothes fill the racks and make you think of summer days poolside.

In addition to the retail stores, the village has an excellent assortment of dining options . In summer, these establishments boast of inviting patios, some of which overlook the lake. Grab a table at the Firehall Pizza Co. and rest up while enjoying a cold drink and a snack or meal. When the snow flies, the patios go away, but the restaurants hum with a happy crowd enjoying the après ski vibe.

Fortunately, Blue Mountain has a massive parking lot (free) mere steps away from the village area. If you stay right in the village, it's possible to park your car and leave it here until you need to return home.

Blue Mountain ski resort

Blue Mountain Ski Resort is one of the best ski resorts in Ontario and with good reason. Seven chairs and four surface lifts whisk you and your crew to the top in minutes flat and allow you to clock up some serious vertical. The 720 feet (220 meters) of vertical is not huge but decent by Ontario standards. This vertical is frequently inundated with huge dumps of snow directly off Georgian Bay and, what Mother Nature doesn't supply, the resort's 600 snow guns fill in the gaps quite handily.

Runs range from wide, gentle groomers to twisty trails through the trees and mogul-infested black diamond shots down the Niagara Escarpment. In addition to the traditional ski runs, three terrain parks offer all the latest humps, bumps, jumps, and rails that you can handle.

The gondola at Blue Mountain

If hiking up the Niagara Escarpment to the top of Blue Mountain sounds like a bit more effort than you'd like to expend, climb aboard one of the open-air gondolas and let the lift do the heavy lifting.

These gondolas have no seats; you stand up for the entire ride. This is fine because the open-air style affords you 360-degree views out over the resort area and off to Georgian Bay sparkling in the distance. The ride is quick; only six minutes up and six minutes down.

At the top of the gondola, stretch your legs and go for a walk along one of the many paths that lead to additional views.

Ziplining at Blue Mountain, Ontario

If you are looking for a bit of a thrill but nothing too crazy, get up in the air by taking the Wind Rider Zip Line . Once you are safely buckled in, you'll descend the slopes of Blue Mountain, hitting speeds of up to 50 kilometers/hour, 15 meters in the air. The ziplines stretch from tower to tower and cover a distance of 122 meters.

It's more fun to zipline as a group. Each of the zipline courses has three wires that run parallel to one another. Try to get your group to jump off all at the same time and race each other to the next tower.

Right beside the zipline is the Woodlot Low Ropes course . Three elevated courses have over 25 different elements, including bridges, cargo nets, and tire swings. Routes range from just a few feet off the ground right up to 30 feet in elevation. Farther up the hill is the Woodlot high ropes course. Targeted at those with less of a fear of heights, this tourist attraction also has seven routes and 75 course elements high in the trees.

Climbing wall at Blue Mountain

With speed climbing as a new sport in the 2021 Olympic games, the interest in climbing walls as a sport has increased substantially. At Blue Mountain, a tall climbing wall is located near the entrance to the Ridge Runner Mountain Coaster.

The 25-foot-high wall may look imposing, but once you are all set up in the safety gear, you'll feel more confident about making it to the top and zipping back down again. It's open to almost all ages (three and up), and each climb is supported by an on-wall staff member. The wall has four different courses to the top with varying degrees of difficulty.

Ridge Runner Mountain Coaster

One of the top adrenaline-producing activities at Blue Mountain is a ride on the Ridge Runner Mountain Coaster. Depending on how brave you are, you can reach speeds of 42 kilometers per hour as you descend the mountain. You control the speed of your coaster with a set of handbrakes: engage them, or just let the coaster rip, it's your choice.

The track snakes its way down the steep Blue Mountain slope for one kilometer, passing through dense forest and over onlookers below. Be prepared for big drops, corkscrews, and sharp corners as you test your fear limits. Coaster sleds hold two people; you have the choice to ride on your own or with a partner or child.

Hiking through the woods in Blue Mountain

Blue Mountain has 18 hiking trails and five walking paths spread across the resort area. Trails range from leisurely walks in the forest to heart-pumping ascents up to the top of the hill. As an added bonus, the Bruce Trail runs along the top of the mountain, allowing you to experience a stretch of this legendary 890-kilometer-long route.

Most of the trails are in the forest on the way up, but at the top, they open up and provide incredible views out over the resort area and to the shimmering waters of Georgian Bay in the distance.

Autumn mountain biking

With the abrupt and unexpected closure in 2021 of the lift-serviced on-hill mountain bike trails at Blue Mountain Resort, the best place to hit the trails is now in the nearby Kolapore Uplands and Three Stages areas .

At Kolapore Uplands, you'll find over 40 kilometers of flowy trails through a mixed forest. Trails tend to be fairly easy and well within the limits of any competent intermediate rider. The area is relatively lightly used, so trail congestion is rarely a concern or issue. If you see a long descent ahead, let those knobby tires rip!

Trails crisscross wetlands in some areas and can get a bit muddy, but for the most part, they are well-drained and maintained. One watch-out is for leaf debris, especially after a rain event. This debris can be quite thick and slippery and sometimes hides rocks and holes, so be mindful as you blast along.

The trail network is very extensive, and it can be confusing at times. Be sure to either purchase a map in advance or take a photograph of the trails at the entrance in case you get turned around.

More advanced mountain bikers will want to test their mettle at the Three Stage Trail area. This crazy mishmash of trails is located in the Pretty River Provincial Park, a short distance from Blue Mountain.

The 40-plus-kilometer trail network can be hard to follow since the routes are mostly unmarked. As a rule of thumb, the area extends across three levels. If you get confused, just head back uphill; this is where a majority of the trails are found and where your car will be parked. Avoid going to the very bottom level unless you enjoy a long, tough slog-up.

Trails here wind their way through the forest, and some of the downhill routes will either scare or thrill you depending on your risk tolerance. The main entrance is at 2nd Line and Side Road 6.

Entrance to the Scenic Caves

Just a short drive away from the Blue Mountain base area, Scenic Caves is a worthwhile family activity. Wander through a natural area that is estimated to be over 450 million years old. Winding trails and stairs take you through the cave area; additional routes are spread out across the 370-acre property.

One of the main highlights of a visit to Scenic Caves is the largest suspension bridge in Southern Ontario . From this majestic structure, you can see for miles and miles in every direction.

If you have young children with you, they will likely be more interested in the adventure playground, the gemstone mining adventure (additional fee), or the 18-hole mini golf course . If your legs are getting tired, jump on Rocky, the small train making its way around the park, or take a tractor wagon ride. For those with a taste of adventure, take a ride on the Thunderbird Twin Zipline.

One of the top water-based attractions at Blue Mountain is the Plunge Aquatic Center. A major favorite for kids, this wet and wonderful playland of water is sure to elicit squeals of delight from all who visit.

Plunge Aquatic Center has both an indoor and outdoor area chock-full of exciting things to do. Some of the most popular include the numerous waterslides that twist and turn and send you flying out the end. Test your strength with the rope swing as you run, grab, and arc way out over the pool below. Take a jump off the wooden diving platform and try for the biggest spray possible.

A toddler splash pad is a favorite for those who aren't swimmers. In this area, you'll find a giant mushroom-style water feature, jets, and all kinds of ways to soak yourself silly.

After all the action, warm up and relax in one of the hot tubs.

Cross-country skiing

Blue Mountain isn't all about downhill skiing. Some of Ontario's best cross-country skiing is located a short distance away at Highlands. This premier cross-country facility has over 25 kilometers of groomed trails across varying levels of difficulty.

Whether you prefer classic or skate skiing, the trails are 30 feet wide, providing ample room for all participants. No need to worry about getting lost. The trails are exceptionally well-marked at every intersection, and Highlands has an app that will allow you to know your exact location at any point in time.

Late day at Northwinds Beach

Just a short drive from the resort area, Northwinds Beach is one of the best beaches in the area. Break out your favorite water toy and hit the crystal-clear waters. The beach is well protected from strong south winds, and breakwaters keep waves to a minimum.

Select your favorite beach area and set up your gear on the soft golden sand. Just back from the beach are large trees providing some welcome shade on hot summer days. Picnic tables are positioned by the beach and make for a perfect spot for a leisurely lunch. Kids will enjoy the shallow and relatively warm water, and if they lose interest in frolicking in the water, a playground is located near the main parking lot.

View from Craigleith Provincial Park

If you've hiked or taken the gondola to the top of Blue Mountain, or gazed out from the suspension bridge at Scenic Caves, you will have seen off in the distance the immense body of water known as Georgian Bay. For an up close and personal experience, drive five minutes north from the resort area to Craigleith Provincial Park. This small, but fascinating park features flat limestone shelves that extend into the impossibly clear waters of the bay.

Park and walk east to the right to the end of the park to find a small beach area, where you can dip your toes into the especially frigid water or launch your kayak or canoe. Informational plaques in the park detail the numerous shipwrecks that occurred just offshore from the park.

Accommodation can be expensive at Blue Mountain in the summer. If you are watching your budget consider camping here.

Apple pie

Few things can be more enticing than the smell of a fresh-baked apple pie on a warm fall afternoon. The only thing that could make it better is, well, more apple pies. And that's what you'll get when you drive the Apple Pie Trail , a 40-kilometer-long route that passes by some of Ontario's best orchards.

The Apple Pie Trail starts in the town of Blue Mountains and winds its way through the rolling countryside and the small towns of Craigleith, Beaver Valley, Thornbury, and Meaford. The Apple Pie Trail is interactive, with key stops at restaurants, cheese stores, boutiques, and, of course, pie stores.

Wasaga Beach

If your visit to Blue Mountain is in the summer, and you crave a bit of beach time, pack up the car and head to Wasaga Beach. Home to the world's longest freshwater beach, Wasaga Beach has been drawing sun-seekers for decades and is one of the best beaches in Ontario.

Shallow, warm waters are ideal for families with small children or for those interested in a game of water-based touch football. Set up your blanket under your umbrella and dive into your latest paperback thriller or, if you need a bit of eyeball entertainment, stroll along the shoreline and check out the parade of sun-kissed visitors.

1 thought on “Best Things to do in Blue Mountain, Ontario”

Sadly, for many years, several decades, we supported blue mountain, Ontario, biking but blue mountain did not reciprocate! As long term supporters of the bike park we even deferred our 2020 memberships to 2021 as was the ask of the corporation! We were happy to do this only to find that, at the last possible moment, Blue mountain announced that they no longer wanted the downhill crowd. The dirtbags?

No warning, no rationale. Maybe they ceo didn’t have the balls to say it was because they could make more from a gondola of tourists than regulars users? Maybe it was because Altera, the parent company became too risk averse. No reason was ever provided, or, was a response to queries provided.

I only point out the above to provide some balance in your review. Blue used to be a company that was more than a balance sheet.

Happy adventures!

Exciting Things to Do in Blue Mountains, Ontario This Summer

The Blue Mountains, Ontario is one of the most popular places to visit in Ontario. From the golf courses to adventure courses, hiking to swimming, here are the best things to do in Blue Mountains, Ontario this summer.

Blue Mountain Village from above

Situated just north of Collingwood, where the rocky shores of Georgian Bay give way to the rolling hills and karst rock formations of the Niagara Escarpment, is the Blue Mountains.

While the immediate thought that many people have when thinking of things to do in Blue Mountains, Ontario is usually Blue Mountain Village, that is just one small part of what is one of Central Ontario’s most beautiful regions.

The Blue Mountains are exploding with golf courses , wineries, beautiful hikes, and amazing spots for food lovers.

Where Is Blue Mountains, Ontario?

Blue Mountains is a sprawling region of Grey County that stretches down from the base of the Bruce Peninsula and includes the towns of Thornbury, Craigleith, and Clarksburg, as well as a plethora of small villages and hamlets. And, of course, the central focus of Blue Mountains, Blue Mountain Village and Ski Resort.

The region is about a two and a half hours drive north of Toronto, although, during weekend traffic can bump this time up significantly. But once you’re there you’ll be swallowed by the stunning forests, gentle switch-back routes, and welcomed by some of the most amazing hotels and restaurants that call Blue Mountains, Ontario home.

What To Do In Blue Mountains, Ontario This Summer

You don’t have to look far to discover the best things to do in Blue Mountains, Ontario. While this area established its popularity as one of Ontario’s top ski destinations , the past several decades have seen an expansion of tourism and travel experiences that have hardly been matched by even the most popular destinations in Ontario.

Blue Mountain Village

Boy treetop trekking in Blue Mountain Village

Blue Mountain Village and Resort is the centrepiece of action in Blue Mountain, Ontario, so it makes sense to start there before exploring all of the other amazing Blue Mountains attractions.

With loads of amazing restaurants, beautiful lodges, and fun attractions, Blue Mountain Village in the summer is a fun place to be. Whether you’re spending your time roaring down the mountain on the Ridge Runner Mountain Coaster or getting pampered at the luxurious iwa Spa , there is something to entertain everyone at Blue Mountain Village.

Grab a reservation at Copper Blues and enjoy some of their famous steak before relaxing in style in one of their Westin Trillium suites. Your next morning can be spent hiking the gorgeous trails or just strolling through the village and nosing through the quaint shops.

Explore One Of Ontario’s Newest Wine Regions

Just north of Blue Mountains (along the shores of Georgian Bay between Meaford and Owen Sound) is one of Ontario’s up-and-coming wine regions . Make a stop at Coffin Ridge Estate Winery for their gothic twist on Ontario wines that include names such as “Back From The Dead Red.” Or stop by Roost Wine Co. in nearby Clarksburg and pick up a case (trust me, you’ll want more than one) of their elegant, dry L’Acadie white wine. You can find their website here .

Explore The Trails And Viewpoints of Scenic Caves

Scenic caves suspension bridge looking over Georgian Bay

Scenic Caves is just a short distance from Blue Mountain Village and it’s a fun side trip that will take you away from the hustle and bustle of the popular Blue Mountain resort, and drop you into a place with some of the best views of Georgian Bay.

Scenic Caves is an outdoor family-friendly adventure park where you can spend your time crawling through a wild series of caves, hiking gorgeous trails, and taking in the views from one of Ontario’s most beautiful pedestrian suspension bridges.

During the winter this is also one of the most popular snowshoe trails in Ontario . But during the summer things get even more spectacular as the caves and rocky landscapes open up even more of the amazing scenery.

And between hikes and adventures, there’s plenty of places to stop for an ice cream bar as well. You can check out the Scenic Caves website here .

Hike Some Of The Amazing Blue Mountains Trails

One of my favourite things to do in Blue Mountains is hiking. This incredible area has some of the best hiking trails in Ontario . And every time I visit I discover a new trail that quickly becomes a new favourite.

Nearby to Blue Mountain Village you’ll find the scenic Pretty River Loop which takes you on a gorgeous 4 km winding route through the landscape. In nearby Collingwood there are a number of scenic hikes including White’s Bay Park.

But currently sitting on top of my list of the best hikes in Blue Mountains is Metcalfe Rock . This gorgeous area, which is part of the famed Bruce Trail, is listed at 1.9 km, but its easy to make it far longer by including the myriad of side trails that meander through the forest. The park is centred by towering cliffs, caves, and crevasses that make exploring so much fun.

Visit Some Waterfalls

Flowing curtain waterfall is one of the things to do in Blue Mountains, Ontario

While many people consider the waterfall capitals of Ontario to be Hamilton and Algoma, Blue Mountains and the surrounding area definitely takes the runner-up prize. They may not have as many waterfalls as some areas, but the ones that they due are dazzling to behold.

There are two spectacular waterfalls in the Blue Mountains that are worth the drive from wherever you’re staying.

Eugenia Falls Conservation Area is a short 23-minute drive from the Blue Mountain Village and combines gorgeous canyon trails with beautiful viewpoints overlooking Eugenia Falls.

Not far from Eugenia Falls is the towering Walters Falls Conservation Area . It’s an easy 31-minute fall drive from the village and features an old mill and rough trails that will make you forget how close you are to civilization.

Hit The World’s Longest Freshwater Beach

Ok, I might be stretching a bit here as Wasaga Beach isn’t technically in Blue Mountains, Ontario. But, it is just a brief 30-minute jaunt from Blue Mountain Village, so I’m going to say that’s close enough.

Wasaga Beach is known as one of Ontario’s big party spots. But it’s also home to some beautiful long and winding canoe routes and many more fun activities. Take in the views of the remains of the HMS Nancy which was sunk off of the coast and has become a man-made island not far from shore. Or, just lounge on one of eight different beaches and recreation areas spread out along 14km of soft white sand.

Explore The Apple Pie Trail

Row of gin bottles against a black background

While exploring the best things to do in Blue Mountains, it’s hard not to notice all of the sprawling apple orchards that dot the landscape. Apples are big business here, and the Blue Mountains Apple Pie Trail is one to hit during the warmer months. If you can make the visit in the fall, you’ll find the freshest and juiciest products.

Make the run over to Thornbury and taste some of the mouthwatering ciders coming out of Grey & Gold Cidery , a sustainable, farm-based cidery based on a 6-acre orchard. And make a stop at Goldsmith’s Orchard Market or RT 26 for some fresh-baked pies and locally-crafted delicacies.

When I was up in Blue Mountains last fall, I discovered that they had an incredibly unique gin distillery in the region. Spy Cider House and Distillery is another great stop on the Apple Trail. The fun atmosphere and great patio of Spy make this a gorgeous hangout on warm summer nights and the apple gin is something you’re going to want to bring home a bottle or two of.

You can check out the complete list of Apple Trail stops here .

Hit The Links on these Blue Mountains golf courses

Take some time between hiking and relaxing to test your golf skills at one of the nearly 30 golf courses in and around Blue Mountains. This is one of Ontario’s premier golf destinations. And with magical views from the Niagara Escarpment and the fresh air coming off of Georgian Bay, it’s no surprise as to why.

Blue Mountains Golf and Country Club and Monterra Golf are right in the village and popular for those staying in Blue Mountain Resort, while OslerBrook Golf and Country Club sits at the base of the nearby OslerBrook ski resort and sits on 230-acres of rolling hills.

For some truly amazing putting, head to the Golf Club at Lora Bay , which is one of Ontario’s top-rated golf courses. This gently-winding course was designed by PGA professional Tom Lehman and features an amazing variety of landscapes to play through.

Pamper Yourself At One Of These Blue Mountains Spas

iwa-spa-ontario-wellness

If you love to be pampered, there are few better places in Ontario than in Blue Mountains. There are four fabulous spas in Blue Mountain Village and several nearby in Thornbury and Craigleith.

iwa Spa at Blue Mountain Village has been one of our favourites. Our wellness expert, Chris Ryall, wrote about them not long ago. You can check that out here . Close by is the absolutely gorgeous Scandinave Spa. This luxurious adult-only spa offers a circuit of outdoor pools, sauna’s, steam, rooms, and hot tubs. The spa is first come, first serve, so arrive early so you don’t end up on the waitlist.

Now It’s Time to Experience These Things To Do In Blue Mountains For Yourself

There are more things to do in Blue Mountains than meets the eye. From Blue Mountain Village to the apple trail and everything in between, you can find something for everyone in this beautiful region of Ontario. Many of these businesses and restaurants are anxious for visitors after a tough year. So let’s support local and make the most of your Blue Mountains adventure.

Scenic Caves, only a short distance from the foot of Blue Mountain, is a fun family adventure. A natural region that is thought to be more than 450 million years old is accessible to visitors. Visitors may access other pathways on the site via meandering pathways and stairways that lead into the cave section. Southern Ontario's longest suspension bridge is among Scenic Caves' top attractions. Visitors can see vast stretches in all directions from this magnificent structure. If people are traveling with small kids, they might be more fascinated with the 18-hole miniature golf circuit, the gemstones mining experience, or the adventure park.

6 Go Hiking

Five walkable routes and 18 hiking paths are all around Blue Mountain . The various trails include simple strolls through the forest and strenuous climbs to the summit of hills. As an additional perk, visitors can travel a portion of the fabled 890-kilometer Bruce hike as it gets up the mountain's summit. Several routes are in the woods on the ascend but broaden up and offer spectacular scenery of the tourist destination and Georgian Bay's glistening waves in the background at the summit.

5 Try Downhill Skiing

One of the top ski areas in Ontario is Blue Mountain, for a valid reason. Visitors can score some significant vertical with seven seats and four ground lifts that take them to the summit in no time. The steep is often swamped by massive snowfall that comes directly from Georgian Bay, and the venue's 600 snow cannons easily make up the difference. Vast, smooth groomers and winding wooded trails are just a few of the runs available. Three terrain region offers all the current ridges, rollers, leaps, and tracks that visitors can manage along with the conventional ski lines.

4 Cross-Country Skiing Is Another Option

There is more to Blue Mountain than just downhill skiing. Highlands, which is not far away, offers a few of Ontario's top cross-country skiing destinations . There are more than 25 kilometers of groomed routes here, with different difficulty levels. The paths are 30 feet broad, offering enough space for all competitors, whether they enjoy standard or snowboarding. At all crossings, the trails are designated, making it easier for visitors to identify where they are. Visitors can also locate themselves using the Highland app.

3 Have Fun At The Plunge Aquatic Center

The Plunge Aquatic Center is among Blue Mountain's most popular water-based features. The wet and delightful water play area, a perennial kid favorite, is certain to make visitors squeal with glee. The attraction includes both an outdoor and an indoor area packed with fun activities. The various waterslides that bend and curve and hurl people soaring out the top are a few of the most famous. Those who can't swim can enjoy the toddler splashing pad. People can relax and unwind in the hot tubs following all the activities.

2 Mountain Biking

There are many amazing mountain biking trails for true adventurer s , but the Kolapore Uplands and Three Stages regions are the ideal places for mountain biking in the vicinity of Blue Mountain. More than 40 kilometers of wavy pathways wind via mixed woodlands at Kolapore Uplands. The majority of the trails are moderately simple and within the capabilities of any capable intermediate rider. Since there isn't much traffic in the vicinity, track overcrowding isn't usually a problem. Some routes pass wetlands and can become a little murky, but most are well-maintained. Furthermore, a few of the descent paths can either terrify or excite visitors.

1 Explore The Blue Mountain Village

The quaint pedestrian-only hamlet at the foot of Blue Mountain is a fantastic spot to visit for some shopping therapy. Visitors can explore and check out boutiques, home furnishing shops, sporting goods stores, apparel stores, and more. People can also get the hiking essentials that every adventurer should always have if they are interested in going hiking. One can discover the best alpine ski gear and clothing throughout the winter to ensure people look their sharpest on the slopes. The area also offers a fantastic selection of restaurants. These places feature welcoming patios during summer, a few of which have a lake view. Patios are covered when the snow falls, yet restaurants are bustling with people relishing the après ski atmosphere.

Waterfall and rollercoasters at Blue Mountain Resort

The Blue Mountains Ontario is an area of Collingwood, Ontario on the south shores of Georgian Bay. Now, there isn’t any real “Blue Mountain.” In fact, the area is really a series of rolling hills and escarpment where Blue Mountain Ski Resort was established back in 1989. But the success of the resort grew to the point where “The Blue Mountains” was established as a independent village in 2001.

The combination of natural beauty, mountain-style village life, and outdoor adventure activities have made the Blue Mountains one of the most popular places to visit in Ontario .

The Blue Mountains are an easy 2-hour, or 160 km drive north of Toronto and just a short drive south east of the Bruce Peninsula. And for looking to experience fall in The Blue Mountains, be prepared for one of the most spectacular fall colours in the province.

The Blue Mountains, about 160 km (100 miles) north of Toronto, in Southern Georgian Bay is a great weekend getaway from Toronto and one of the most popular getaways in Ontario.

The Blue Mountains are a perfect family destination. The resort offers a spectacular mix of luxury, adventure, cuisine, and excellent accommodations. In the area around the resort you’ll discover incredible hiking trails, beaches, and much more.

The focal point of The Blue Mountains is non other than Blue Mountain Resort. If you make the visit to the resort and feel like you’ve stumbled into the Rockies, that’s because this alpine-style resort is owned by Alterra Mountain Company. Alterra is the same company that owns some of the most popular ski resorts in North America such as Mont Tremblant , Mammoth Mountain, and Crystal Mountain.

Blue Mountain Resort is stocked with restaurants serving everything from poutine to surf and turf. The lodge-style accommodations truly cater to families. Most rooms included kitchenettes, bedrooms, pullout couches, and fire places.

And experiencing fall at Blue Mountain Resort is an amazing way to take in all of the attractions.

How To Spend One Day At Blue Mountain Resort

Maybe you’re crunched for time and you don’t have a full weekend to explore the Blue Mountains. Or, you’re heading up to Blue Mountain Resort for some much-needed time away. Well, you’ll be happy to know that there are a lot of things you can squeeze into one day at Blue Mountain Resort. Check out our video below to see our wild and crazy day at Blue.

Things To Do At Blue Mountain In The Fall

There are some great things to do at Blue Mountain Resort in the all. From adventure to nature and everything in between. To make the most of your Blue Mountains adventure, consider picking up the Play All Day adventure pass . This will give you access to most of the Blue Mountain experiences at one cost.

Feel The Need For Speed On The Ridge Runner Mountain Coaster

Ridge Runner Mountain Coaster at Blue Mountain

Mountain roller coasters, or mountain coasters have been popping up at ski resorts around the world as a thrilling way to add some 4-season excitement. And since it opened in 2011, the Ridge Runner Mountain Coaster has been one of the top Blue Mountain attractions.

This twisty-turny wooden adventure ride starts with a slow pull up to the top of the Blue Mountain Ski Hill before sending you soaring down a series of dips, dives, turns, and twists to the waiting crowds at the bottom. The entire experience sends you down 1,085 metres (3,560 ft) of trail. But if the idea of an uncontrolled descent concerns you, don’t worry. You control the brake the entire way.

Children under 12 must ride with an adult, so for our Ridge Runner ride, C came with me and D went with Christina. At the end of the first ride, D had had enough of a thrill. C, on the other hand, wanted to go down again. This time he asked me to floor it and it was pedal to the metal the whole way down.

The Ridge Runner Mountain Coaster is open all year, so if you want to experience the fall colours of Blue Mountain, this is a super fun way.

Take To The Skies on the Timber Challenge Ropes Course

Timber Challenge Ropes Course at the Blue Mountain

Treetop Trekking is something we have had a blast experiencing. C and I rocked some wild ropes courses in Saguenay, Quebec , and at the beginning of the summer, D got his first taste when we went treetop trekking in Stouffville, Ontario .

This multi-level ropes and adventure course at Blue Mountain has something for all ages and skill levels. The low ropes course has two-tiers, an introductory course and a high course. For those wanting to push their comfort levels, there’s a high ropes course as well that snakes among the trees and include the wildly popular zip lines.

Although the boys were too young to partake in the high ziplines, they loved the thrill of the low ropes course and it was a great way to experience Blue Mountain in the fall.

Ride The Trails Of The Blue Mountain Bike Park

There are few better mountain biking trails in central Ontario than the Blue Mountain Bike Park. Whether you’re looking for leisurely trails or action-packed thrill rides, this park has everything from mountain bikers of all skill levels.

We haven’t tried out the mountain bike trails at Blue Mountain yet, but I’m hoping to bring the boys there very soon.

If fall mountain biking at Blue isn’t your thing, there are also e-bikes available for rent. These pedal-assisted electric bikes can give you a big boost on the hills and make for a much more relaxing cycling experience. Those 16 and older can sign up for both 60 and 90-minute tours.

Take A Ride On The Open-Air Gondola

Views from the Open Air Gondola in the Blue Mountains

Some of the best views of Blue Mountain Village come from above. Sure, life inside the alpine-style town is sweet. But it’s not until you get a birds-eye view that the scope of Blue Mountain in the fall really becomes apparent.

While you can take a drive up the mountain to some of the viewing platforms looking out over the town, you can also hop on the Blue Mountain Gondola for a scenic ride up the ski hill.

Take In 18-Holes Of Cascade Mini-Golf

Cascades Mini Golf at Blue Mountain Resort

To say that my family is bad at mini-golf might be an understatement. But, we still love the quirky and fun mini-golf course at Blue Mountain in the fall. The Cascades course is right at the edge of the village and features a winding 18 holes of some of the twistiest mini-golf holes we’ve ever experienced.

Get Wet at Plunge! Aquatic Park

Plunge! Aquatic Centre at Blue Mountain Resort

The Blue Mountain water park, Plunge! is a great little attraction for families at Blue Mountain. Featuring an indoor/outdoor pool, splashpad, waterslides, and more, Plunge! offers a fun place to soak away the day.

My kids could have spent the entire day shooting hoops and ducking under the dump bucket. But there were just too many things to do at Blue Mountain in the fall to explore.

Wander Through The Blue Mountain Light Trail

Agora Light Trail at Blue Mountain

One of the latest fall and winter trends has been the creation of spectacular light trails that wander through unique locations or spectacular nature. The Blue Mountains has jumped on this as well and laid out the Agora Light Trail at the top of the Blue Mountain trails near Scenic Caves.

Now I’ll admit, the Agora Trail isn’t as spectacular or engaging as the Lumina experiences we’ve had in Sherbrooke, Quebec and Kingston, Ontario. But the Blue Mountain light show is also significantly less expensive. And, when combined with the scenic ride up the Blue Mountain gondola, it makes for a fun night out for families in the Blue Mountains.

Things To Do Near The Blue Mountains In The Fall

Things don’t end at the edge of the Blue Mountain Resort. From Collingwood to the shores of Georgian Bay, and the nearby waterfalls and hiking trails, there are so many things to do near the Blue Mountains that you could literally spend a lifetime taking it all in.

And from Thunder Bay to Windsor, this area of Ontario is one of the most spectacular places to visit in the fall.

Scenic Caves Nature Adventures

Scenic Caves Adventure Park In the Blue Mountains

Just a short drive from Blue Mountain Resort (you can even make the walk from the top of the gondola quite easily), is Scenic Caves Nature Adventures. And this is one of the coolest places to visit in the Blue Mountains in fall.

Scenic Caves is an adventure park that combines gorgeous walking trails, scenic suspension bridges, and playgrounds. The views from the Scenic Caves viewpoints are probably the most spectacular in the region. And this is a perfect destination for families experiencing fall in the Blue Mountains.

Explore The Apple Pie Trail

There are countless culinary adventures in the Blue Mountains, but none of them are timed quite as perfectly for experiencing Blue Mountain in the fall.

The area is surrounded by apple orchards. You can spend an entire weekend touring the surrounding area, picking apples and discovering the Apple Pie Trail. And while apple pie can be bought any time of the year, the freshest season for apples in the Blue Mountains is the fall.

The Apple Pie Trail is a culinary adventure that explores the restaurants, farms, bakeries, cideries, and distilleries that surround the Blue Mountains. Many of these places offer tasting menus and flavour experiences that are fun for the whole family.

Hike The Wild Landscape Of Metcalfe Rock

Metcalfe Rock during fall in the Blue Mountains Ontario

The landscape of the Blue Mountains, Ontario is wild. But few places stand out as dramatically as Metcalfe Rock. This popular spot is a haven for hikers, rock climbers, and nature enthusiasts.

Whether you’re looking for caves, awesome hiking trails, or more edge-of-your-seat adventure, Metcalfe Rock truly delivers. There are two outfitters that cater to those looking to experience the land a little more intimately. Free Spirit Tours and On The Rocks both offer climbing and nature adventures. But, if you’re just looking at hiking or exploring, it’s also possible to spend the day exploring without a guide.

Metcalfe Rock is just a 25-minute drive from the Blue Mountains and makes a great stop for those enjoying the Apple Pie Trail.

Visit The Grey County Waterfalls

Eugenia Waterfall in the Blue Mountains

Most people look at the most dramatic waterfalls in Ontario and lump them into either Hamilton waterfalls, or Northern Ontario waterfalls . But there are three breathtaking waterfalls near the Blue Mountains that are worth a side trip from the resort.

Eugenia Falls Conservation Area is a short 23-minute drive from the Blue Mountains and combines gorgeous canyon trails with stunning waterfall views.

Walters Falls Conservation Area is nearby to Eugenia Falls and just a 31-minute fall drive from the Blue Mountains. The old mill and rough trails make it a fun place to explore.

These Blue Mountains waterfalls tend to be packed in the summer, but during the fall season the crowds taper off and you’ll have much better access.

The Best Hotels In The Blue Mountains

The Blue Mountains hotels are a great place to spend your time while you’re exploring the village. They offer excellent access to the resort amenities, kitchens, bathrooms, and often great views of the hills and Blue Mountain Village. Whether you choose the amazing beds of the Westin Trillium , the family-friendly comfort of the Grand View , or one of the plethora of Blue Mountains home rentals , you’ll find awesome places to stay both on and near the resort.

If you’re looking to stay outside the resort, there are plenty of places to stay in Collingwood and the surrounding area. The Georgian Bay Hotel is a popular spot with a pool and gorgeous scenery.

If you’re planning a visit to the Blue Mountains in fall, I hope this guide helps you along the way. But if you’ve made the trip already, tell us about your experience and let us know if we missed anything. Or,  tag our Instagram account  with your photos. We would love to share in your travels.

The town of Bracebridge is the waterfall capital of Muskoka with three cascading waterfalls just minutes from downtown. Located on the 45th parallel, halfway between the Equator and the North Pole you’ll find Santa’s Village right here in cottage country. The night sky above Muskoka is just as beautiful as the ground and water below thanks to the Torrance Barrens Dark Sky Reserve . Located southeast of Bala, Torrance Barrens consists of 1900 hectares of protected crown land free of urban light pollution.

How to spend a winter weekend in Blue Mountain Ontario

Latest Videos

Blue Mountain is one of Ontario's most popular winter destinations for adrenaline-chasers looking to hit the ski slopes, but if snow sports aren't your thing, there are countless other reasons why it still makes a perfect getaway.

Whether you're looking for a peaceful escape from the city or a thrilling adventure, Blue Mountain has something for everyone.

Here's how to spend a winter weekend at Blue Mountain.

4:00 p.m. - Check into Penny's Motel

Located just a short 15 minute drive from  Blue Mountain Village  in the idyllic small town of  Thornbury ,  Penny's Motel  is a re-imagined roadside boutique accommodation and the perfect home base for your weekend away.

Once you're done admiring the unique touches in your boho-chic room, you can head over to hang out by the outdoor fire pit, or check out the heated Après hut.

View this post on Instagram A post shared by Penny’s Motel (@pennysmotel)

If you prefer staying in Collingwood, check out the recently remodelled  Dorchester Hotel  that has a 125-year old history, or wake up right next to the action at The Westin Trillium House in the village.

5:00 p.m. - Grab a pre-dinner snack or happy hour cocktail

If you're staying at Penny's, don't miss their onsite  Après Snack Bar  open from 4:00 - 8:00 p.m. daily for its curated cocktail selection and small bites. They make a delicious espresso martini with Kahlúa, and have several delicious snacks like charcuterie and oysters.

View this post on Instagram A post shared by Twist Kitchen & Cocktail (@twistkitchenandcocktail)

Try  Twist Kitchen + Cocktail  if you're sticking around in  Blue Mountain Village , which has a rustic-chic lounge with a buzzy vibe.

6:00 p.m. - Lace up for a mountaintop skate

For one of the most unique skating experiences, head to Woodview Mountaintop Skating and glide along the 1.1 km loop on top of the Blue Mountain ski hills.

You'll get epic views of the Niagara Escarpment if it's still light, but after dark the trail is illuminated with thousands of interactive lights for night skating.

8:00 p.m. - Head to dinner at Bruce Wine Bar

After working up an appetite from your skate, head back to Thornbury for a delicious meal at Bruce Wine Bar . This intimate restaurant is a local favourite, offering Neapolitan style wood-fired pizzas and a seasonally changing menu.

I highly recommend their pulled duck pizza, which is the perfect mix of sweet and savoury with a teriyaki base.

View this post on Instagram A post shared by Bruce Wine Bar & Bodega (@brucewinebar)

Collingwood also has an array of fantastic restaurants to choose from for dinner. Bent Taco is a Mexican-inspired spot with unique tacos and burritos, like chicken tinga or 'beet chorizo'.

For a more upscale option, head to  Tremont Cafe  for gourmet European fare set in a historic building.

9:00 a.m.  - Grab a hearty breakfast at Thornbury Bakery Cafe

With an active day ahead, fuel up with some delicious breakfast at  Thornbury Bakery Cafe . Established in 1901, everything is made from scratch daily.

In the village, you can also try  The Pottery Restaurant within Blue Mountain Inn for classic staples like eggs benedict or Western omelettes.

10:00 a.m. - Hit the slopes

Blue Mountain is known for its ski hills, and there's no better way to enjoy the snow. Whether you're a beginner or experienced skiier, there are hills for all levels, and they offer lessons if you're new to the sport.

If you don't own equipment, you can rent it right at the hill. Reserve your board or skiis along with your lift tickets online .

View this post on Instagram A post shared by Blue Mountain Resort (@bluemtnresort)

If skiing or snowboarding doesn't sound too appealing but you still want to embrace the thrill of the outdoors on the mountain, Blue Mountain also has  snow tubing or their one-of-a-kind all season mountain roller coaster for a dose of adrenaline.

1:00 p.m. - Break for lunch

The Village at Blue Mountain has countless restaurants to choose from to grab a bite at between runs. For something quick, try a grilled cheese sandwich with a twist at Cheezed , like their signature Strawberry Bliss that has strawberry jam, brie, and bacon.

View this post on Instagram A post shared by CHEEZED Blue Mountain (@cheezedbluemtn)

For a sit-down lunch break, Firehall Pizza Co. is a popular spot in the village with pizzas, pastas, and burgers.

2:00 p.m. - Wander through the village

Whether you plan to head back to the ski hills for the afternoon or want to do something new, don't miss everything the village has to offer. Check their website for ongoing events , warm up by the outdoor fire pits, or browse their selection of shops.

View this post on Instagram A post shared by ROYAL MAJESTY, Blue Mountain (@royalmajestyespresso)

Don't miss getting one of the most elaborate hot chocolates you'll ever try at Royal Majesty Espresso Bar , like their red velvet or s'mores flavours.

3:00 p.m. - Relax at the Scandinave Spa

Experience true bliss with a relaxing afternoon surrounded by nature, soaking in the thermal baths at the Scandinave Spa .

Take in the picturesque views of tall pine trees dusted in snow, and try their cold plunge pool circuit if you dare. Up the luxurious experience by adding a massage  to melt all your stress away.

View this post on Instagram A post shared by Scandinave Spa Blue Mountain (@scandinaveblue)

7:30 p.m. - Dinner in the village

After a busy day working up an appetite, Blue Mountain Village has all your cravings covered. If you're in the mood for Asian fusion, try Mother Tongue , one of the newer restaurants in the village. Their Juicy Dumplings are a must.

View this post on Instagram A post shared by MOTHER TONGUE (@mothertongue.to)

For Italian fare, grab a table at Magnone's , or head to Tholos for Greek cuisine. Jozo's Bar  is also great for a casual après ski hang out.

9:00 p.m. - Check out some live music or go dancing

Blue Mountain Village is the spot to be on a Saturday night, with several nightlife options to suit your vibe. Rusty's at Blue is a BBQ joint that transforms into a club atmosphere after dark, with a DJ and all.

For a more laid-back atmosphere,  MJ Byrne's Irish Pub usually has live music playing on weekend nights.

9:30 a.m. - Start your day with a restorative yoga flow

Wake up with a relaxing start to your day and stretch out those sore muscles at iwa Spa's award-winning restorative yoga on a heated volcanic rock floor.

Besides a good stretch, the heated rock beds are said to emit negative ions and far infrared rays to deeply heat and detoxify the body. You'll leave feeling renewed and ready for what the day brings.

View this post on Instagram A post shared by iwa Spa Blue Mountain Village (@iwaspa.blue)

The spa also offers a range of massages and body treatments, or you can head around the corner to their new iwa Beauty Bar for a mani / pedi or blowout.

11:00 a.m. - Check out and get caffeinated

Sadly it's time to check out of your weekend home away from home, but the day is just getting started. Head into Thornbury one last time and grab a freshly-baked pastry and coffee from  Ashanti Thornbury , brewed with Arabica coffee beans grown in Zimbabwe.

Good Grief Coffee Roasters  is another local favourite, and has delicious donuts.

12:00 p.m. - Explore the nature of Grey County

Grey County has some of the most stunning scenery to take in, with hilly landscapes and views of the Niagara Escarpment. Visit  Scenic Caves Nature Adventures and trek across the longest suspension bridge in Southern Ontario, stretching 25 meters above the valley floor.

There are also snowshoe and cross country ski trails which wind through a beautiful old growth forest.

2:00 p.m. - Grab a late lunch and start the journey home

On your way out of town, fuel up for the drive home and stop at Poppy's French Bistro in Collingwood. This super instagrammable space is located in a restored historical building, and serves a delightful French menu and pastries.

View this post on Instagram A post shared by Poppy’s Bistro (@poppysfrenchbistro)

Try their gnocchi parisienne with bacon brown butter cream sauce, grilled radicchio, and chives. This dish alone will have you planning your next visit back as soon as you get home.

11 Of The Best Places To Visit In Canada, According To Our Travel Team (PHOTOS)

Canada is full of so many breathtaking destinations that it makes it hard to decide where to actually visit. Some are even little-known places that would stun tourists, if they only knew where to find them.

Luckily, we have the inside information on all of the best vacation spots in the country — tried and tested by our travel team.

Our group of Travel Creators and Editors at Narcity have put their toes in the sand of each coast, hiked up mountains in national parks , walked down the cobblestone streets of adorable small towns, and explored tiny islands scattered around the Great White North. Put simply – we have done the work.

While no one can deny the magic of a vacation abroad , there's so much right here in our home that gets overlooked. So, I decided to poll our team in order to put a spotlight on all of our favourite places, so you can explore the best that Canada has to offer.

South Shore Nova Scotia

www.instagram.com

Top of the list is my personal favourite — Nova Scotia's south shore . Some might call me biased since I grew up there , but others may call me extremely qualified to speak on it for the very same reason.

I've gotten to explore all the nooks and crannies of Nova Scotia, which most people — even my fellow Canadians — overlook.

While everyone was flocking the shores of the well-known beaches of Tofino or the Toronto Islands , I spent my childhood enjoying the unspoiled white shores and blue waters of Queensland Beach.

You can drive along the coastline and stop at the quaint small towns, like Chester or Lunenburg, and rest at any of the stunning beaches along the way.

Sauble Beach, Ontario

Travel Creator Katherine shouted out Sauble Beach as one of her favourite spots in the country.

This underrated spot is ideal for all those looking for a quick and easy getaway this summer. "The sand is white, the shores are clean and the water is sparkling and bright blue in the summer," Katherine said.

For Torontonians, it's extra convenient since it's just a few hours' drive away.

Katherine recommended people do a little vintage shopping at The Patch while there, and grab some good eats at Casero Taco Bus — which she has dubbed "Ontario's version of Tacofino."

For all the West Coasters out there wondering where the love is — don't worry!

While Tofino is the go-to destination for summer travellers in B.C., I personally prefer this small town on Vancouver Island , which is a convenient 30-minute drive from Tofino.

With cheaper prices and equal charm, this stunning small town has rainforest hikes, beautiful coastal views, and amazing local cafes and shops.

Prince Edward Island

P.E.I might be famous for potatoes and Anne Of Green Gables , but this tiny province has much more to it.

If you make the trip here be sure to spend a few days in Charlottetown, enjoying the local food and wandering through the shops. Then head out to one of the beaches, or go for a coastal hike.

With red-sand beaches, picturesque lighthouses, and stunning cliffsides, this spot is a photographer's heaven. Paired with the tasty seafood options and friendly people — it makes for an ideal summer vacation destination.

Our Associate Editor, Madeline, grew up near Elora, and still regularly goes back to this town for visits .

The historic town is small but packed with "old-time buildings, cute shops, and adorable cafes," she said.

If you want to stroll around and pretend like you're somewhere in Europe for the day, this is the spot to do it. If you're feeling more adventurous, Madeline suggested going on one of the many "beautiful hikes in the area as well as the quarry, a popular swimming hole."

After a long day of exercise, you can then get pampered at the Elora Mill spa.

Blast John Denver, because it's time to head out to the Rocky Mountains.

Charlie, our Travel Creator in Alberta, says this place is " the perfect mountain town with stunning views of the Three Sisters mountain range."

There's no better way to embrace the outdoors here than by going on a hike. Charlie suggests Grassi Lakes and Elbow Lake for all the explorers out there.

This stunning small town also has kayaking, mountain biking, and rafting — so it's an adventure-lover's dream come true.

Our Senior Editor Helena provides an outsider's perspective , being from the U.K. but having travelled all over Canada — and Montreal made her feel like she was close to home.

"It transported me to Europe with its charming architecture, cobblestone streets and hearing the French language being spoken all around," she said. Just go for a stroll in Old Montreal, eat some tasty French-inspired cuisine, and you'll see exactly what she means.

It's no secret that Montreal is beautiful, but visiting the city never gets old. There's always a new shop to peak into, or a delicious new restaurant to try.

Wine country is calling!

Trade in the towering snow-peaked mountains in B.C. for rolling hills and stunning vineyards that will make you feel like you're in Lake Como.

Charlie recently visited this idyllic spot and was happy to find it had all the makings of an epic summer vacation: Beaches, wineries, and hikes. Set in the Okanagan Valley, this spot has lush greenery all around, and massive lakes calling for you to take a dip in them.

If you go here, try out Mission Hill Winery in West Kelowna, and you'll feel like you're in a storybook castle.

Montebello, QC

Vacation isn't just for the summertime!

Helena visited this charming area in February, which meant everything was coated in a fresh snowfall. This made for an especially beautiful trip to Omega Park , where there are animals all around.

Then you can cozy up by the fireplace at the iconic Fairmont Le Château Montebello and even pay a visit to their spa. Helena also said to check out Manoir Papineau National Historic Site, which is nearby.

Blue Mountain Village, ON

A go-to spot for Ontarians , this little village is great all year round.

And if you're anything like Madeline, you'll soak up the European vibes this pedestrian village has to offer, especially during the holidays.

"The village transforms into a twinkling Christmas town that is straight out of the North Pole for the Holiday Magic at Blue event. You can sip decadent hot chocolate and explore a glowing trail of lights," Madeline said.

In the summer you can take advantage of all the patios, breathing hikes, and maybe even get a thrill on the zipline.

Quebec City

Katherine channelled her inner history buff when exploring Quebec City, taking in all the culture it has to offer. With cobblestone streets and cute boutiques, this city will satisfy all your aesthetic vacation needs.

"You can also get a great balance of cityscape and nature here," she added.

If you're in the mood to get spooked, Katherine recommended "doing some kind of haunted walk or ghost tour."

Happy travels, Canada!
