Frequently asked questions, why is jaipur referred to as the ‘pink city’.

During Prince Albert’s 1876 tour of India, Maharaja Sawai Ram Singh II determined that by beautifying his city and painting it terracotta pink (widely known as a hospitable and welcoming colour), the Prince would be enticed to visit Jaipur. This would ultimately give the maharaja the chance to strengthen ties with the British aristocracy and establish a bond with Royal family. After a successful visit, the maharaja then went as far as passing a law to make it illegal to paint any building in Jaipur any other colour than pink.

What our customers say...

Grand tour of india february 2024.

Grand tour of India February 2024, this was my first experience of a tour and my first visit to India. It was exceptional, full of new and exciting experiences. Our Tour guide was fantastic reacting to changes and giving superb history. We were even able to join in an amazing local celebration as we stopped the coach, this couldn’t have been planned for but one of the great memories. Hotels were good and the finish by the sea was a welcome rest after a busy 16 days. The range of food at hotels catered for vegetarians as well as meat eaters, breakfast was great and all meals buffet style. I would recommend travelsphere to anyone.,

Best holiday company ever

Would highly recommend Travelsphere trips. We have been on several now. India, Kenya and Italy. All very different, but each of the trips have been five star. The tour guides are excellent, hotels and lodges were excellent. We will definitely be doing more trips. Hope to do New Zealand. Just as soon as we can travel again

India Touring Holidays Frequently Asked Questions

Where do we start! India is an enchanting country full of diverse cultures, spices, animals and a celebration of colour. It’s also a large country with so much to see, so it’s vital to choose your highlights to suit your length of stay when visiting India. The one thing most travellers want to see is the absolutely stunning Taj Mahal which thankfully all of our tours include!

If you can add on a few more days then it’s worth stepping out beyond the Golden Triangle to enjoy some wildlife sightings on a safari in Ranthambore National Park.

Want the ultimate tour of India, taking you from the Golden Triangle in the north to Kerala's backwaters in the south. With everything above included then you need the Grand Tour of India . The only tour where you'll visit Old Delhi in the company of former street child, who will introduce you to the India that very few travellers get to see.

Everyone knows about the Taj Mahal and it goes without saying that it’s a highlight of India but there are some other hidden gems you should be aware of:

Animal and Nature lovers should be sure to visit Ranthambore National Park. Covering almost 400 square kilometres, it was once the hunting ground of the Maharajas of Jaipur and is now home to an impressive array of wildlife. Its most famous resident is the Bengal tiger, but there are also more than 320 species of birds, more than 40 species of mammals and over 35 species of reptiles! A wildlife lovers dream!

Monarchy, History and architect lovers will revel in the wonders that are Jaipur and the pink palace. The city of Jaipur is one of India's architectural marvels. Its elaborate structures house some of the country's most ornate royal palaces. Built in the 1700s under the order of Rajput ruler Sawai Raja Jai Singh II, it was considered ahead of its time. Jaipur city was painted a romantic dusty pink hue back in 1876 as a welcome to Queen Victoria's husband, Prince Albert and has retained its status as the "Pink City," ever since.

Most tours of India only take you to the tourist areas and you do not get a real insight into some of the hardships of life for the locals. For a fully rounded view of India you need to visit Old Delhi – a maze of chaotic, ancient alleyways and streets, jam packed with shops, people, street vendors, beggars and the homeless. There are approximately 100,000 homeless people living in India’s capital and half of them are children! Our Grand tour of India includes a walk through Delhi with former street children who now work with our partner, the Salaam Baalak Trust. This charity does incredible work with these youngsters, not only teaching them skills to better their lives but also providing them with a warm bed at night, a hot meal each day and the chance of a brighter future.

Flowing, loose fitting, cotton clothing are ideal in India as they are cool, comfortable and shows a cultural respect to the locals. In the main however anything goes, unless you are attending a temple, mosque, place of worship or religious ground and then the following items must not be worn; vest tops, sleeveless dresses/tops, mini-skirts, shorts or jeans. Always err on the side of modesty and make sure any décolletage, shoulders and knees are covered. Some religious buildings may ask you to remove your shoes and wash your feet before entering and women may be asked to wear a hair covering for example a scarf. They will usually be provided by the mosque if required.

Indian cuisine in general terms is similar to the food you will have experienced from your local takeaway. A nice selection of curry’s from mild to hot with all the accompaniments. These you will find with ease from Central to North of Indian However, Indian food is also heavily influenced by region, due to the difference in soil and climate. Cuisines will vary substantially and use locally available spices, herbs, vegetables, and fruits, so an open mind to trying new dishes is wise.

The cuisine on the Southern side of India differs greatly to the Central and North, you won’t find a Butter Chicken, Tikka Masala or Rogan Josh. And nope, not even a naan bread! Instead you’ll find your taste buds tantalised by Dosas, a paper thin pancake filled with delicious treats such as spicy lamb, chickpeas or lentils accompanied with steamed coconut rice and Vadas, a gently spiced, savoury donut.

Religion and cultural choices also play a big part in Indian cuisine and you may find that some restaurants do not offer meat as an option with most Hindu’s and Buddhists following a strict vegetarian diet. Whereas Islamic Indian cuisine will offer Halal only options.

A treat not to be missed is the street food market, where locals cook their dishes in the open air for you to try. It’s cheap, cheerful and extremely tasty! What is better still is that while your taste buds are having an experience of their own you are supporting a local family to survive the poverty that still exists in this country.

TOP TIP – For those of you that like it extra mild or even extra hot – here is a translation in Hindi the most spoken language in India. Food Heat = bhojan kee garmee Very Mild = Bahut Halka Mild = Halka Medium = Mahyam Hot = Garm Very Hot = Bahut Garm

Etiquette - In India, you should finish everything that is on your plate because it is considered a respect for the host, and with food in Indian considered sacred, you don't want to waste a morsel. In South India, where food is usually served on a banana leaf, it is polite to fold your leaf over from the top to bottom ― Do not fold the leaf from the bottom to the top, as this is a sign to the host that you were not satisfied.

Unless you like it Hot, Hot, Hot, the best time to visit India is from December until early March. April onwards sees soaring temperatures which make touring more difficult and June, July, August and September can be monsoon season in most regions.

More information about India

A holiday to India is a journey through a complex history, a colourful culture and a varied landscape which stretches from the snowy caps of the mighty Himalayas to the luscious coast of the abundant Indian Ocean . The 6th largest economy in the world and home to a staggering 3 billion people, India holds within its territory some of the worlds most mythical and iconic sights and cities such as the eternal Taj Mahal , Varanasi, the Ganges River, the lush beaches of Goa and Rishikesh, the world centre of yoga, not to mention the lively capital of Delhi . This vast country shares borders with China, Nepal, Bhutan, Pakistan, Bangladesh and Myanmar and its immense coastline, stretching for more than 7,500 kilometres , sits on the Indian Ocean, the Bay of Bengal and the Arabian Sea. Today, India is divided into 29 states and 7 union territories.

Nature in India

Lovers of nature are spoilt for choice when they take a tour in India . With habitat zones ranging from tropical rainforests to alpine forests and deserts , India is home to a plethora of endemic plant and wildlife species, the former of which contributes to its strong culture of herbal medicine and Ayurvedic practice. India is famed for its varied and exotic wildlife including Bengal tigers, lions, Indian and white giraffe , leopards and snow leopards , the majestic Indian elephant and the mighty Indian rhinoceros.

The country’s fantastically diverse wildlife is preserved in more than 120 national parks, although it is common to see wild animals roaming the city streets. Supporting such a wide array of wildlife, India is home to a range of geographical regions and landscapes, the most iconic being the Thar Desert , the snowy Himalayas , the lush tropical backwaters of Kerala and the unbelievable metropolises of Mumbai, Kolkata and Delhi.

History of India

With a history as vast as its size and stretching back as far as 5 millennia , a package holiday in India will open your eyes to a fascinating mix of traditions, cultures and religions. Often called the ‘oldest religion in the world’, Hinduism is the largest religion in India, and across the centuries it has laid the foundations for the country’s culture and way of life. It’s founding texts, known as the ‘ vedas’ , were composed in India between 2000 and 5000 BC , marking the beginning of Vedic Culture , a key period in the northwest territories of the country.

During these ancient times in the central Ganges Plain , the territory was divided into 16 kingdoms, known as Mahajanapagas. By the 4th and 5th centuries , the Golden Age of the Gupta Empire had unified much of the Indian Subcontinent and encouraged progress through a practice of Hinduism based on devotion rather than ritual which prompted a proliferation of arts, architecture and Sanskrit literature. As the centuries moved forward so Muslim dynasties and the famous Mughal Empire left their mark on the story of India.

During the Mughal era, from the 16th-19th century , popular monuments such as the Taj Mahal , Humayun's Tomb , Fatehpur Sikri , the Red Fort and the Agra Fort , were constructed and reflected the artistic collaboration between both Persian and Indian architectural styles. The East India Company and the establishment of the British Raj also began in this era and its authority would continue until 1947 when Indian independence was declared. In 1950 , a secular and democratic government was established marking the new era of modern India. Today, the colours, rituals, spirituality and vibrant culture of India are known and admired worldwide, so a package holiday to India is the best choice for a full experience of the wonders of the country.

Indian culture

The world’s most populous country, India is known for its rich culture which varies from region to region. The official language is Hindi , although there are lots of regional languages that are widely spoken and English is the main language in which education and business are communicated. Religion is an important part of life in India and although Hinduism is the leading faith, Islam, Buddhism, Jainism, Sikhism, Christianity and ancient Zoroastrianism all contribute to the melting pot of culture and rituals.

With a complex cultural catalogue of beliefs and practices, concepts such as karma, dharma and the widely popular practice of yoga, all originate from India. Ancient languages such as Sanskrit and Sangam , are considered important pillars of culture in the country, although performing arts and music are at the centre of India’s vibrant heart. Dances often act out myths, legends and religious teachings and are an unmissable sight on a holiday to India.

In recent years the Indian film industry, sometimes known as ‘ Bollywood’ , has gained recognition worldwide for its brilliant mix of modern and traditional values, opening up an insight into today’s India to viewers around the globe. Family values are another important pillar in everyday Indian life, with a multi-generational patriarchal structure being the most common structure of family life. It is also common for consensual arranged marriages to be organised for the younger generations. Traditional dress is a highly recognisable part of Indian culture, seen in the colourful fabrics and patterns of the ‘saris’ and ‘cholis ’ often irresistible to visitors on holiday in India, who cannot resist buying the beautiful textiles to take home with them.

From the immortal deserts of Rajasthan to the sleepy backwaters of Kerala and spiritual ghats of Varanasi, India is a must-visit destination for all intrepid travellers. If you dream of having your eyes opened to a different way of life, to unbelievable devotion, to the most vibrant colours of the spring Holi festival and to the smiles and friendliness of the local people, a package tour of India will deliver these dreams to you.

India Tour from United Kingdom

India has long attracted travellers from the UK with an affinity dating back to the pre-independence times of the British Raj. From influencing a generation of British artists in the 60s, most significantly the Beatles, to the adoption of the ubiquitous chicken Tikka Masala as Britain's national dish, our kinship with India is very much alive today.

History lovers should book our India Golden Triangle with Rajasthan Tour, which takes you to the Taj Mahal, Jaipur, forts, palaces and holy places. Or book the Maharaja's Express and see India's most visited destinations, taking in the spectacular landscapes in between.

10 Things about India That Foreigners Know Before Traveling To India

India is massive, fantastic, and also packed with culture. It's filled with colors, architecture as well as history. The country has unique traditions and offers mouth-watering food.

1. Shopping in India is Costlier than in the USA

Well, taking into consideration the value of the Indian Rupee against that of the US Dollar, it would be quite fair to assume that shopping in India is cost-effective. Nevertheless, fairly ironically, shopping in India can become rather a rough deal.

2. The Traffic is Insane

Believe the hype and the movies that show cars not sticking in the same lanes. In Delhi there are a great lot of stop signs and red as well as green lights, however regardless of the rules no one seems to give a damn as well as nobody seems to be doing anything about it. You cannot pay me to drive in India. Driving in Kashmir and various other cities like Lucknow, Aligarh, and Meerut is also worse. I haven’t seen that many traffic lights and people indicate their turns by honking.

3. Do not have the Street food or water

This is a given. Food is amazing however if you're not used to the street food you're most likely going to get sick. The most of the diseases are likewise water-born so as instead to tap water stick to mineral water or sodas, specifically if you're traveling to smaller villages and towns.

4. Indian festivals

With so many religious beliefs and cultures, you will certainly across fairs, events, as well as merriment of all kinds.

Whether it is the shimmering lights of Diwali, the colors of Holi, the extravaganza of Durga Puja, Navaratri, Onam, Dusshera, Id Ul Fitr and Christmas, you’ll encounter indigenous customs, amazing Indian cuisine, and total festive abandonment.

5. Hands and Feet

There's a whole hierarchy of the body parts in Hinduism. The head is superior to the rest of the body, and the feet are lowest on the rung.

Feet are considered dirty in India, so remove your shoes before you step into someone's residence. Do not tip on anything important and also if you do, immediately express your apologies.

6. Become a expert at bargaining

Do not get intimidated by the fact that you're a foreigner. When going to street market or shops, negotiating is natural in India. In my experience, vendors will certainly often give you a high price first reasoning that you're 'foreign' which you're not going to know it's worth. Offer bargaining a shot. Don't afraid to argued.

About the United Kingdom holiday

The island country of the United Kingdom (UK), which we know, is an amalgamation of four historic European nations, namely England, Wales, Scotland and Northern Ireland. It covers an astonishing total area of 94,354 square miles, housing a population of over 67.6 million. The UK is a land of diverse cultures, history and natural geographical features. It is a place where you can find beautiful valleys, towering mountain ranges, pristine beaches, serene lakes and various other things thriving on an equal footing with ever-evolving industries, art, culture and modernisation. If we take a deeper look, we can see how each English city has its own unique identity that it brings to the table when it comes to tourism. From the craze of football and fish and chips, all the way up to their rich history and heritage sites. As for Wales, despite being a small nation, it offers a majestic blend of jaw-dropping natural beauty and age-old history and culture. Scotland accounts for approximately one-third of the UK’s land area, hence it’s no surprise that it has a lot to offer in terms of tourism. Imagine acres of an unprecedented green patch of land taken up by highland cattle and huge castles or massive lakes surrounded by magnificent scenery while being shrouded in mysteries, that’s just a part of what vacations in Scotland are all about. And last but not least, comes Northern Ireland, with its wild and rugged coastline, bustling towns, iconic cafes, adventurous campsites, mile-long beaches and more. So, when it comes to sightseeing and adventure tourism, the United Kingdom stands proud with numerous options on offer.

India holidays

Holidays in India

Palatial architecture and tropical backwaters, india from £965pp.

India is a culture-filled destination where bustling metropolises rub shoulders with ancient history and tropical paradises. For a breathtaking cultural experience, you need to set off on a holiday to India. With bustling cities, beaches and iconic landmarks to immerse yourself in, the energy and spirit of this country is like nothing you’ve experienced before - so it’s no surprise that this was the birthplace of yoga. With so much to see and do, a holiday to India really is the trip of a lifetime.

Hotels in India

Experience colours and spice: highlights of india.

From the private beach resorts of  Goa  to the bustling, culture-rich cities of Rajasthan, spotting magnificent wildlife on safari to exploring the ancient, fairytale-like ruins of Hampi... India is one of those countries that not only lives up to, but far surpasses, every expectation. It’s as intoxicatingly colourful, vibrant and culturally rich as you’ve heard.

This unforgettable country has something to offer every kind of holidayer, so let’s get you started with some of our India holiday highlights:

  • Rajasthan boasts architectural and cultural must-sees. In Jaipur, discover the Amber Fort and the vibrant buildings known as the ‘Pink City’. Wander the busy streets, dip in and out of the various market stalls and shops for some of the best artsy souvenirs the country has to offer, and travel local-style with a trip in a rickshaw. Be sure to haggle for the best price! While in Rajasthan, be sure to travel on the  Deccan Odyssey  to the state’s villages, where you’ll meet the local tribes.
  • Head to the sacred city of Varanasi, on the banks of the mighty Ganges, to experience its spectacular and fascinating culture. Hindu pilgrims come to this holy city, one of the oldest cities in the world, to bathe in the sacred waters and cremate their loved ones. There’s nowhere on Earth quite like Varanasi – India holidays would be incomplete without a stop here.
  • In almost total contrast, the UNESCO World Heritage Site, Hampi, is an otherworldly oasis of green palm trees, paddies and plantations contrasted with rusty hued ruins and boulders. Hampi Bazaar is the perfect chillout spot after you’ve finished exploring the beautiful area, boasting lantern-lit rooftop restaurants aplenty.
  • Not all temples, busy streets and colourful culture, India holidays are great for nature lovers and adventurous types, too. For safari, nothing quite beats spotting the Royal Bengal Tiger and the elusive leopard at the Ranthambore National Park. Truly one of the best places on Earth to see these incredible animals, why not take a  tour  as an extra to our India holiday packages?
  • The ideal way to relax while also taking in some of India’s most famous sights, take a  houseboat tour  of Kerala’s backwaters. It’s hard to beat cruising through the breathtaking palm-studded lagoons. If trains are more your thing, a ride on the Kalka-Shimla toy train, which twists and turns past some of the most beautiful scenery northern India has to offer, is a must.
  • Take a trip to the temples of Galtaji, an ancient hindu pilgrimage site just outside of Jaipur, Rajasthan. One of the temples is known as “Monkey Temple”, and is an animal lover’s dream. Buy some peanuts at the bottom and you’ll be a (monkey) crowd pleaser.

With all the smells, colours and cultural traditions, where better to sample exciting and exotic foods than on holiday in India?

  • Take to the beaches of Goa for spicy seafood dishes that British curries don’t even nearly match up to, as well as Portuguese-influenced cuisine. From laidback restaurants to ocean-side shacks, the Goan dining experience is like no other, no matter your tastes.Aboard the Deccan Odyssey, luxuriate with fine dining and five-star service from waiters dressed in traditional Maharashtrian attire – you’ll feel like you’re in a Wes Anderson movie. The food is truly exquisite, and the views from the train will take your breath away.
  • Mumbai is known for its deliciously distinctive street foods, or  chaat . Head to Juhu beach for the best offerings – look out for  pav bhaji , a tomato and vegetable-based curry dish served with soft, garlic-y bread,  vada pav , a spiced potato burger, and  pani puri , crunchy, crispy spheres filled with chickpeas, tamarind chutney and other tasty things. Better yet, you can feed two people – and we mean  feed  – for a couple of pounds max.
  • For India holidays spent in Kerala, sample the tropical state’s southern delights in the form of thali (small servings) with a side of vegetable stuffed  paratha  (flatbread) for good measure.

Of course, this rich and vibrant country is known for its equally colourful festivals, and it’s certainly worth planning holidays to India around one if you can! Most of note…

  • October/November:  India celebrates Diwali, the Festival of Lights. Provided you stay in an area with a Hindu culture, the festivities, alight with lanterns and candles, will be all around.
  • Spring:  an explosion of colour marks the celebration of Holi, where old age traditions meet modern parties filled with music and food. This is a famous festival for a reason – don’t miss it.

India Tours & Vacations

Travellers looking at a shrine carving with their guide in Delhi, India

There’s probably no other country on the planet that blazes its way into your memory like India.

Years later, you can still hear the morning calls of the chai wallahs; see smoke curling over the Ganges during a golden Varanasi sunrise , and smell the rich aromas of simmering curry. A lot of India tours rush from highlight to highlight, ticking them off in a blur of temples and tikka. But not us. Our India holidays are more about spotting Bengal tigers in Ranthambhore or Panna National Park, hanging with nomads in Jaisalmer, meeting the holy men of Pushkar, or hunting down the best street eats. This isn’t just the India you see on postcards. This is India as it is. Raw, bizarre and totally addictive.

Best time to visit india.

Due to India's size and topography, the climate varies from place to place but the best time to visit, generally speaking, is in the winter from December until early March. During the coolest months (December-January), temperatures can get quite cold in Delhi and in the north, especially at night. The whole country tends to get very hot from April onwards and most regions experience the summer from late May to around October. The summer offers hot and humid conditions, although this is considered one of the best times to visit Ladakh and the hills.

Culture and customs

India is one of the world’s oldest civilizations with a culture steeped in ancient beliefs and traditions. Religion also plays a massive role in everyday life with 80% of the population practicing Hinduism while the remaining 20% is divided into Muslim (India has the world’s second-largest Muslim population), Christian, Sikhism and Buddhist populations.

At its core, India remains a deeply conservative nation; however, it has been touched by rapid modernization and Western influences in recent years. Some families still adhere to a traditional structure (especially in more rural areas) with generations living under the same roof, the eldest male at the head of the family and arranged marriages. But this is becoming less and less popular, particularly in larger cities, where Western ideas and societal shifts heavily influence the culture due to things like Bollywood films.

While some behavioral standards remain the same (public displays of affection are still taboo), it’s important to keep in mind that with more than one billion people speaking over 122 languages across 28 states and seven territories, it’s impossible to describe one unified culture for the entire nations and the character of India’s people can vary greatly from city to city.

Top places to visit in India

Surely there isn't a more iconic image of India than the Taj Mahal. It's spectacular and soul-stirring, but words simply aren't enough to describe the beauty of this immense mausoleum (even when it's packed with tourists). Best known as a monument to love and loss, the 17th-century building was built by Emperor Shah Jahan as a tomb for his second wife – a bold declaration of love, indeed!

2. Udaipur, Rajasthan

Welcome to Udaipur, India's most romantic city that could easily give Venice a run for its money. You'll undoubtedly fall in love as you explore its grand marble palaces, shimmering lakes, and winding alleys filled with cozy chai bars and dizzying bazaars. It's also a popular hub for Indian artists, dancers, and musicians whose talents will pull you deeper under Udaipur's spell.

3. Ranthambhore National Park

Ranthambhore National Park was once a famous hunting ground for the Maharajas of Jaipur, but these days it's a haven for wildlife. Jump into a 4WD and search for Bengal tigers, hyenas, jackals, deer, langurs, marsh crocodiles and more. You can also hike up to the stunning ruins of the 10th-century fort or experience the peace and tranquillity of the ancient Ganesh temple (one of the oldest temples in India).

4. Kerala Backwaters

Surrounded by tea and coffee plantations and connected by a series of blissful, palm-shaded backwaters, Kerala is a peaceful oasis deep within India's colorful chaos. Float along the dreamy waters of rural Kerala on a houseboat, paddle over to an island village on a pole boat for an overnight homestay with a local family, and enjoy traditional Keralan food served on a banana leaf.

5. Varanasi

Varanasi is a place that will be etched in your memory long after your time in India is over. Uncover the stories and secrets of this holy city with your local guide, get lost in the laneways, cruise along the golden Ganges at dawn, or witness ancient religious traditions and groups of pilgrims praying in the river. Even if all you do in Varanasi is sit along the ghats and watch life go by, you'll walk away with countless stories to tell.

This holy, desert city is one of the main pilgrimage destinations for Hindus. Explore the bustling ghats and temples around Pushkar Lake, watch devout rituals and worship at the Brahma Temple, share a meal with a local family while learning about their life and culture, or hike up the hill to the beautiful Savitri Temple for unbeatable sunrise views over the town.

Get ready for delicious bites and lots of Bollywood. Some say Mumbai is the food capital of India, and you'll see, smell and taste huge culinary diversity here that celebrates regional cuisines from across the country. You might also like to watch life go by at Dhobi Ghat (the world’s largest outdoor laundry), check out the Bollywood Walk of Fame, or explore the sprawling Crawford Market selling everything from fruit to jewelry.

8. Dharamsala

The mountainous Himalayan town of Dharamsala, also known as McLeod Ganj, is home to the Dalai Lama and the Tibetan government in exile. Tibetan culture is central to life here and it won't take long for the town's calming, grounding energy to wash over you. Sip chai and watch robed monks strolling between the monasteries, listen to the prayer flags fluttering in the breeze, and visit the Dalai Lama’s temple.

9. Rishikesh

Not only is Rishikesh the yoga capital of the world, but it's also one of the best places to experience the sacred soul of the Ganges. Join a yoga or meditation class along the riverbanks, enjoy delicious vegetarian food in one of the many rooftop cafes, go white-water rafting down the Ganges for a different perspective of this holy river, or experience the nightly fire ritual known as Ganga Aarti at one of the city's dazzling temples.

Tinged with Portuguese influence (and flavors!), the state of Goa boasts lovely beaches, rich traditions, World Heritage-listed buildings, and mouth-watering food. Kick back with a coconut (or cocktail), join a yoga class on the beach, visit a local spice farm to learn about some of the essential ingredients in Indian cuisine, or pick up fresh ingredients at the market and cook up a storm with a local Goan cook.

The gorgeous pink stone buildings in Jaipur’s old town have earned the city its 'Pink City' nickname. Discover buzzing bazaars filled with handcrafted textiles and jewelry, dodge camel carts and rickshaws as you stroll through the streets, explore the oh-so-impressive Amber Fort, or visit the home of a local Brahmin family to learn about their culture and way of life over a delicious homemade meal.

Home to the magnificent Mysore Palace and the birthplace of Ashtanga yoga, there's no denying Mysore is one of South India's most captivating cities. Lose yourself in the grandeur of the palace's ornately decorated rooms, marvel at the intricate Hoysala architecture of Keshava Temple, go on a hunt for the tastiest idli, or share a tasty biryani lunch with a local family.

Delhi is a place where ancient temples stand beside Bollywood billboard ads, people commute to work alongside sacred cows and monkeys, and pockets of peace exist within the chaos. The electric energy of India's capital city is palpable, and while it can take some getting used to, there's no denying the excitement of discovering new sights, sounds, tastes and smells at every turn – especially when you have a local leader by your side.

14. Thar Desert, Rajasthan

Check another item off your bucket list as you travel across the pristine dunes of the Thar Desert on camelback, stopping at a few dhanis (small villages) along the way. When you reach your camp, enjoy dinner in the relaxing desert ambiance before sleeping in a comfy permanent tent under the stars. This desert safari is bound to be one of the main highlights of your adventure.

Food and drink

Intrepid believes that one of the best ways to experience a country is by eating. Whether you're sampling street food, savoring a cheap eat or indulging in a banquet, there are endless options to choose from wherever you are in the world. Indian food is one of the world's most favored cuisines, and travelers will be in for a real treat when visiting India. Relying heavily on spices and vegetables, vegetarians will be delighted with the multitude of meat-free dishes available and visitors will be able to notice marked differences in the cuisines of each region.

A trip through India will reveal a diverse range of landscapes, villages, cities and environments.

History and government

Early history.

Humans have inhabited India for as long as 75,000 years, with early civilizations flourishing as early as 3300 BC. Over the centuries, India both influenced and was influenced by other nations and kingdoms, with far-reaching trade, conquest and migration spreading the subcontinent's culture far and wide. Empires rose and fell over the centuries, with the wealthy Mughal Dynasty ruling most of India by 1600. At the same time, different European nations started showing an interest in India after being brought to the area for trade. The Portuguese, Dutch, British and French all had vested interests in India, with the British East India Company being given the rights to trade in India in 1617. The 1857 rebellion and War of Independence culminated in the decline of Mughal rule and were considered the first movements against the British Raj's heavy-handed rule of the country.

Recent history

By the 1920s, India's independence movement had grown considerably with Mohandas Gandhi leading mass movements based on passive resistance and non-cooperation against the British Raj. Although it took decades, India finally gained independence in 1947. More recently, India has seen dramatic societal changes mainly due to modernization and globalization. A new wave of prosperity has seen the rise of the middle class, with men and women entering into new work roles in telecommunications, manufacturing and business. India's large cities are dealing with the mass migration of rural citizens, who are moving to the city to seek better employment, education and opportunities for their children.

Take a whole lot of colored powder and water, add thousands of happy people not afraid to get a little (or a lot) dirty and you have Holi – a technicolor Hindu celebration that marks the beginning of spring and the triumph of good over evil. Celebrations take place across India in either February or March.

Diwali (Festival of Lights)

India’s biggest festival – meaning ‘rows of lighted lamps’, people decorate their homes with colorful lights, candles are lit and firework displays take place across the country. The celebrations are particularly spectacular in Varanasi, where illuminated candles and earthen lamps are floated down the Ganges River as fireworks light up the sky. This five-day festival takes place every October or November.

Gujarat Kite Festival

Large, colorful and unusual kites flood the skies of Gujarat each January to commemorate the start of summer and the beginning of harvest. Purchase your own at Patang Bazaar, a famous kite market, or just watch the others dance through the sky.

Mumbai Ganesh Festival

The birth of the elephant-headed god, Ganesh, is celebrated for 10-days each August or September in cities across India, but Mumbai takes it to another level. An incredible energy can be felt throughout the city as people pack the streets for a massive party and an elaborate statue of Ganesh is paraded around.

Pushkar Camel Fair

Thousands of camels (and their owners dressed in their finest garb) descend upon Rajasthan's Pushkar for the annual camel fair. Camels are traded and raced, acrobats and performers entertain crowds at a nearby fair, while finely dressed males and bejeweled females take the chance to let their hair down.

Is India safe for LGBTQIA+ travelers?

The majority of Indian society is still conservative, and while most travelers will have a welcoming and hospitable experience, discretion is still advised for LGBTQIA+ travelers, particularly in more remote towns and villages which may be more conservative. The same advice is also given to heterosexual couples (and couples of all other sexual orientations) as public displays of affection other than hugging and holding hands are generally frowned upon.

For more detailed and up-to-date advice, we recommend visiting  Equaldex  or  ILGA  before you travel.

Is India accessible for travelers with disabilities?

Intrepid is committed to making travel widely accessible, regardless of ability or disability. That’s why we do our best to help as many people see the world as possible, regardless of any physical or mental limitations they might have. We’re always happy to talk to travelers with disabilities and see if we can help guide them towards the most suitable itinerary for their needs and, where possible, make reasonable adjustments to our itineraries.

As a general rule, knowing some common words in the local language, carrying a written itinerary with you and taking to the streets in a group, rather than solo, can help make your travel experience the best it can be.

How will I be traveling around India?

Intrepid believes half the fun of experiencing a new country is getting there, and getting around once there! Where possible, Intrepid uses local transport options and traditional modes of transport - which usually carry less of an environmental impact, support small local operators and are heaps more fun.

Depending on which trip you're on while in India, you may find yourself traveling by Jeep.

Safari through jungles and national parks aboard a jeep, which is ideal for conquering the difficult terrain and offers supreme wildlife viewing opportunities.

Cruising the waterways of India is a revealing, inspiring experience. Whether it’s the iconic Ganges or peaceful Kerala backwaters, seeing India from the water is a must.

Traveling by train is one of the great experiences of India. It's a system which looks like chaos, but it works - and well.

Use the efficient metro to get around the sights and suburbs of Delhi.

Zip around the big cities of India by auto rickshaw.

What kind of accommodation will I be staying in?

Traveling with Intrepid is a little bit different. We endeavor to provide travelers with an authentic experience to remember, so we try to keep accommodation as unique and traditional as possible.

When traveling with us in India you may find yourself staying in a homestay.

Make new friends, feast on authentic home cooking and receive kind hospitality while staying with friendly families in India.

With walks, wildlife spotting and adventure sports nearby, staying in a jungle resort is the perfect way to see another side of India.

From ex-royal palaces to historic hill stations and converted forts, India is full of heritage properties that have been turned into comfortable accommodation with an old-world touch.

What is it like traveling on a small group tour?

Whether you’re a seasoned traveler or you’re about to embark on your first trip, traveling can be as intimidating as it is exciting. That's the beauty of a small group tour. From handling the logistics and organizing amazing cultural activities to local leaders who know each destination like the back of their hand (like which street has the best markets and where to get the most authentic food), traveling on a small group tour with Intrepid will give you unforgettable travel experiences without the hassle that comes with exploring a new place. Plus, you'll have ready-made friends to share the journey with. All you have to do is turn up with a healthy sense of adventure and we’ll take care of the rest.

Does my trip to India support The Intrepid Foundation?
