New Zealand/Australia OAC Trip

This past May, I went on an OAC adventure/leadership trip for 24 days through-out the South Island of New Zealand, and the east coast of Australia. During this trip, we did everything from white water rafting, to jetboating, to skydiving and much much more. At the same time, we were also developing our skills as leaders, as well as creating tight bonds between us that will likely last a lifetime.

The biggest thing that I gained from this trip, is definitely a deeper capacity for compassion. I have always considered myself a very compassionate person to begin with, but these trips in particular have a way of really pushing that further than ever before. Being forced to spend every waking minute with the 23 other people on this trip creates a unique level of comfortability between everyone and thus leads to a situation in which you feel more willing to share the more personal parts of your life. In doing so, it has never ceased to fail just how wildly misjudged the people around you can be, and it’s always shocking the level of struggle people are dealing with on a daily basis.

This trip wasn’t my first rodeo. I had been on two previous OAC adventure trips, and had gotten a good taste of the things I could expect on it. The first trip I went on was to Costa Rica for a week long adventure/service trip. The dynamic of being on a trip like this with what starts out as a bunch of strangers was new to me. I didn’t have a clue just how much we would bond from this type of thing. Then towards the end of the trip we had an evening meeting where the conversation turned much deeper and more personal. I got to hear testimonials from my peers about the hardest things going on in their lives at the moment, and that was eye opening to say the least. Having experienced that once, I thought I had a good idea of what to expect going into this particular OAC trip to New Zealand and Australia. I was in for a big surprise however.

After about the first week of the trip we had an evening meeting that was very similar to the meeting I previously mentioned in Costa Rica. Everyone shared some deeper aspects of their lives that brought us all closer together. Some people shared some things that were a little more heavy than others, but regardless it was a chance for everyone to get something out there about their lives that not everyone would see on the surface. It was even moving enough to make our tour guide cry. That being said, it was something that I had been expecting so it didn’t quite have the same effect on me as it may have had on others. That was all soon to change.

After the second week of our trip we were called in for our evening meeting in which we had been warned that it was going to be long, as we had an “activity” that our leader wanted to do. We forewent the typical evening meeting stuff and went right into the activity. The activity was called scars. The way it worked was like this, you share a physical scar that you have somewhere on your body and tell the (hopefully funny or embarrassing) story as to how you got it. Then you share an emotional scar; A traumatic experience from your life that to this day it still hurts to talk about. This activity, in combination with the level of comfort we all felt with each other, went to a new level which I was not prepared for. Obviously, I cannot and will not discuss what was said within that activity, but I will say that those 23 people I was with are all warriors in disguise. It made me fully realize just how blessed I am in general, and how I truly have no grounds to complain about any of my struggles, because every single one of us on this planet is going through one of their own.

This perspective that I gained from this trip is applicable in almost any aspect of life. As I just mentioned, it will help me push through hard times in my life because I know my struggles aren’t as daunting as they can feel. It will also help me live a happier fuller life. With the mindset of true compassion for strangers, there is only room for love, and no room for judgement or hate. With only love to give, there can only be happiness to follow. I’ve already started to notice the difference this new perspective is making. In my current internship I have a fellow coworker who is hard to work with to say the least, and I’ve notice the general feelings towards him from other coworkers is not the best. Regardless, I am embracing him full on where others might avoid him, and making him feel valued and important while still helping him be a more competent worker in general.

After turning down Auburn, Kenny Gajewski focuses on Oklahoma State softball's future

osu oac trips

STILLWATER — The end of the Oklahoma State softball season was abrupt and painful for coach Kenny Gajewski and the Cowgirls, who lost their first two games at the Women’s College World Series last week.

It might’ve been the most gut-wrenching conclusion to a season in Gajewski’s nine-year tenure.

Yet it was a hugely important season for the Cowgirls, who returned for a fifth straight WCWS appearance, and this time with a mostly new cast of characters.

Only a handful of reserves had been at OSU for more than one of the previous trips to Oklahoma City, so this season was, in many ways, a landmark year for the program .

These Cowgirls showed they can make it to OKC without the core players who anchored the previous four trips.

It wasn’t just a good collection of players who led the team to a strong run. Gajewski has built a program that can sustain.

That’s why Auburn called.

The only SEC program to fall short of 30 wins this season, Auburn representatives reached out to Gajewski about their head coaching vacancy, and he contemplated it, as initially reported by the Stillwater News Press. But when he looked at what he had, Gajewski was content.

“I think I have one of the best jobs in America,” Gajewski told The Oklahoman on Wednesday. “Our conference is excellent. When I look at resources and the way we continue to keep supporting softball here, the way my family loves being in Oklahoma and at Oklahoma State, it just didn’t make sense in the end.

“We still have work to do here, and we’ve worked really hard to get it here. And I feel like we’re still climbing.”

Gajewski has recruited well, both out of the high school ranks and the transfer portal — not just luring elite players, but uncovering hidden gems like Carolin Wang and Jilyen Poullard.

Beyond that, his staff has developed players once they’ve gotten to Stillwater.

Virginia Tech transfer pitcher Ivy Rosenberry was a solid third or fourth option out of the bullpen a year ago, and became a front-line starter who would’ve seen even more action had she not been sharing time with one of the country’s best pitchers Lexi Kilfoyl.

Lexi McDonald, a sophomore from Silo, was perhaps the best unsung story of this team. She went from playing minimally as a freshman to earning a regular starting spot and producing mightily at the bottom of the batting order.

Graduation will leave three big holes to fill in the offseason for Gajewski, who is already hard at in what seems to be a busier-than-usual transfer portal.

The Cowgirls landed Washington transfer pitcher Ruby Meylan via the portal on Thursday.

New assistant coach added

With the moves Gajewski made on his coaching staff last December, the Cowgirls were left with an assistant vacancy that was filled on an interim basis during the season, but now has a permanent addition.

Gajewski announced the addition of Greg Bergeron, who spent the last three seasons as the recruiting coordinator as well as the infield and hitting coach at Cal State Northridge.

He’s a 29-year coaching veteran who spent most of his time in college baseball, working at respected programs like UC Irvine, Cal State Fullerton, Long Beach State, Tennessee and Washington State.

“I’m excited and this is like a dream come true,” Bergeron said in a release. “What Kenny has been able to do from the start till now is awesome. I'm excited to hit the ground running and get to work.”

Gajewski sees Bergeron as an ideal blend with his current staff of pitching coach Carrie Eberle and hitting coach Vanessa Shippy-Fletcher.

Cowgirl Stadium upgrades coming

Gajewski slipped in the news of upcoming improvements to Cowgirl Stadium during a postgame interview after a super regional victory against Arizona last month.

LED lights and a video board were the primary talking points, both of which are at the top of the list for current improvements while the program works to raise funding to rebuild the primary seating area and team facilities.

The benefit of the video board is two-fold.

Aside from its own boost in the aesthetics of the park, the video board will be placed in center field, which means the current scoreboard in right field can be taken down.

That will open more space for additional seating beyond the right field fence to increase the capacity beyond the current number of about 1,700. Space already exists in foul territory down the right field line where extra seating could eventually be added as well.

“We won’t get it all done in one year, but the scoreboard and lights, from what I’m being told, I think that’s gonna happen,” Gajewski said. “And there’s a lot of things we’re gonna do that will subtly enhance the fan experience, but also enhance it for our team.”

OSU Softball: Cowgirls Earn All-America Honors

Ivan white | may 28, 2024.

Oklahoma State's Lexi Kilfoyl (8) throws a pitch during the NCAA softball tournament Stillwater Super Regional game between the Oklahoma State Cowgirls and the Arizona Wildcats in Stillwater, Okla., Friday, May, 24, 2024.

Oklahoma State is in the Women’s College World Series, and some of the nation’s best players are why.

Softball America and D1Softball announced their All-America teams on Tuesday, which included three Cowgirls. As expected, OSU’s star pitcher Lexi Kilfoyl was a first-team All-American for both.

Along with being one of the final three players in the Collegiate Player of the Year race, Kilfoyl has led the Cowgirls to one of their best seasons in school history. Kilfoyl has dominated this season, going 26-3 with an ERA of 1.06.

Along with being the first Cowgirl to be a top-three finalist for USA Softball’s Collegiate Player of the Year, Kilfoyl has also earned Big 12 Pitcher of the Year and was a first-team all-conference selection.

In getting her impressive numbers, Kilfoyl has thrown 146 strikeouts compared to 105 hits in 171 innings. She has also saved some of her best performances for the postseason, throwing a season-high 12 strikeouts in a Regional game against Kentucky.

Kilfoyl is not the only Cowgirl getting national recognition. OSU freshmen Rosie Davis and Karli Godwin earned freshman All-America honors from Softball America.

Godwin has been one of the best first-year players in the country, earning first-team All-Big 12 honors and finishing in the top 10 for Freshman of the Year. Godwin is batting .344 this season while hitting 15 home runs and 51 RBIs. She is also one of only three Cowgirls to play in every game.

Meanwhile, Davis has 56 hits, 33 RBIs and eight home runs. Davis joined Godwin on the All-Big 12 freshman team. Those two are also only the second and third players to make a freshman All-America team under Kenny Gajewski, joining Tallen Edwards.

The Cowgirls will need more impressive showings from their stars in the WCWS. They will play their first game in Oklahoma City on Thursday night against Florida.

Undergraduate Russian Major

Welcome to the major program.

We are very glad you are planning to major in Russian!  Our undergraduate major is designed to offer you training in all the skills (listening, speaking, reading, and writing) you need to communicate in Russian at the Intermediate Mid-to-High proficiency level. After you complete your major, you should be able to converse with ease and confidence when dealing with most routine tasks and everyday social situations, including non-technical discussions of work, school, recreation, particular interests, and areas of competence, and you will be able to narrate and use connected discourse of paragraph length.

As a Russian major, you will also develop informed appreciation of Russian literature, culture, and society; learn to analyze authentic Russian cultural materials; and acquire an international outlook on world events.  To meet this goal, we offer a full curriculum in the Russian language (first- through fifth-year).  In addition, we offer a rich repertory of courses in Russian literature, film, culture, and linguistics—some taught in English, others in Russian—to enhance your pragmatic and cultural qualifications. Our graduating students have a broad knowledge of Russia, the Russian language, and a specific area of expertise within Russian studies (e.g., literature, culture, or linguistics). Many have become eligible to join the OSU Chapter of the Dobro Slovo National Honor Society .

Our major enables  you to acquire proficiency in Russian language and culture through both coursework and the many extracurricular activities ( language table , Russian Club , the Kapustnik talent show, etc.) organized by the Department and the Center for Slavic, East European and Eurasian Studies . Declared majors are kept informed of these events through flyers, mailings, and listservs.  All these opportunities help majors to achieve the confidence and the language and cultural proficiency you need to use Russian at the professional level.

Major Advising

As soon as you know you want to major in Russian, you should meet with the Undergraduate Coordinating Advisor or some other member of our faculty whom you'd like to have as your advisor, to fill out the Arts and Sciences Major Program Form.  This form includes all the courses that constitute your major field of study and serves as a contract for graduation.  The advisor files the form with the Undergraduate Office of the Colleges of the Arts and Sciences (ASC), 100 Denney Hall (164 W. 17th Avenue).

If you need to make any subsequent changes in your major program, you should consult with your advisor.  Approved changes are registered on an updated Major Program Form.

Courses in which you receive a grade of D+ or lower cannot count toward the major. If you receive such a grade, you should meet with your advisor to determine whether to repeat the course or choose a substitute. If a course is repeated, the additional hours earned are added to the minimum necessary for graduation.

Any of the professors in the Department can serve as your advisor for the major. It is important for you to stay in touch with your advisor through regular consultations.  In addition to guiding your undergraduate study, your advisor can be called on if you need to petition Arts and Sciences or if you need a letter of recommendation for postgraduate study or employment.

Please be sure to update your advisor or the Undergraduate Coordinating Advisor on changes in your contact information or academic status.

Oregon State Beavers baseball heads back to NCAA super regionals after win vs. UC Irvine

osu oac trips

The Oregon State Beavers are headed back to the NCAA super regionals.

Oregon State topped UC Irvine 11-6 Monday at Goss Stadium to win the Corvallis Regional. The game initially began on Sunday but was suspended midway through the fourth inning due to weather conditions. The Beavers picked up right where they left off when play resumed though and tacked on five runs over the final five innings to cruise to victory.

Micah McDowell went 3-for-5 with an RBI for Oregon State. Dallas Macias, Elijah Haineline and Mason Guerra all homered during the win.

Now, after securing their ninth super regional berth in program history, the Beavers will set their sights on next week's best two-of-three showdown against Kentucky in Lexington. In order to get there, OSU notched a blowout win over Tulane on Friday and also beat the Anteaters on Saturday behind a big offensive performance from Gavin Turley.

Kentucky, meanwhile, beat Western Michigan, Illinois and Indiana State in a span of three days to sweep its way through the Lexington Regional.

Here's a look at how the game unfolded:

FINAL: Oregon State 11, UC Irvine 6

Bottom of the 9th inning — oregon state 11, uc irvine 6.

Oregon State all-conference closer Bridger Holmes came on in the ninth inning to face the top of UC Irvine's lineup. He retired the Anteaters in order.

Top of the 9th inning — Oregon State 11, UC Irvine 6

Dallas Macias lifted an opposite field, solo homer to tack on another run for the Beavers.

Bottom of the 8th inning — Oregon State 10, UC Irvine 6

Nelson Keljo struck out a pair of UC Irvine batters during a scoreless inning. The Anteaters have had no answers for the soohomore lefty since he entered the game in the seventh.

Top of the 8th inning — Oregon State 10, UC Irvine 6

Oregon State first baseman Mason Guerra launched a massive solo homer to right field to add an insurance run for the Beavers.

Bottom of the 7th inning — Oregon State 9, UC Irvine 6

Oregon State lefty Nelson Keljo came on and worked around a one-out single to produce a scoreless inning.

Top of the 7th inning — Oregon State 9, UC Irvine 6

Dallas Macias, Brady Kasper, and Wilson Weber went down in order.

Bottom of the 6th inning — Oregon State 9, UC Irvine 6

A.J. Hutcheson rolled a 4-6-3 inning-ending double play to get out of the sixth inning unscathed. Midway through the inning, OSU standout left-hander Nelson Keljo began warming up in the bullpen.

Top of the 6th inning — Oregon State 9, UC Irvine 6

The Beavers loaded the bases after a Wilson Weber single and walks from Mason Guerra and Travis Bazzana.

With two outs, Micah McDowell smashed an infield single to the left side to plate Weber. The Anteaters got out of the inning without further damage thanks to a nice play from second baseman Will Bermudez.

Bottom of the 5th inning — Oregon State 8, UC Irvine 6

Anteaters' designated hitter Dub Gleed hit his second home run of the game — a no-doubter to left field.

A.J. Lattery's day came to an end after he issued a two-out walk. He was replaced by sophomore righty A.J. Hutcheson, who induced an inning-ending pop-up.

Top of the 5th inning — Oregon State 8, UC Irvine 5

Elijah Haineline led off the inning with a double, then Mason Guerra followed with a timely RBI single to add a run for the Beavers. Travis Bazzana and Micah McDowell followed with hard-hit singles to load the bases for Gavin Turley.

UC Irvine pitcher Nick Pinto struck Turley out swinging for the second out of the inning. But he walked the next batter, Dallas Macias, to send home another run.

Bottom of the 4th inning — Oregon State 6, UC Irvine 5 — GAME RESUMES

The game is back underway at Goss Stadium. Senior right-hander A.J. Lattery is on the mound for Oregon State — he has replaced Sunday starter Eric Segura.

Lattery entered the game with nobody out and a runner on first base. He worked two quick outs, and then looked like he was going to get out of the inning unscathed.

But OSU right fielder Brady Kasper made on error on a sharp line drive, allowing a run to score.

Bottom of the 4th inning — Oregon State 6, UC Irvine 4 — Game suspended

Due to heavy rainfall in Corvallis, umpires have opted to suspend the game.

It will resume at 12:06 p.m. Monday in the bottom of the fourth inning.

Top of the 4th inning — Oregon State State 6, UC Irvine 4

Micah McDowell cracked a leadoff single, and two batters later, Dallas Macias smoked a double to right field. But he slid past the second base bag and was tagged out. The out was still a productive one, though, as McDowell later scored from third on a wild pitch.

Bottom of the 3rd inning — Oregon State 5, UC Irvine 4

After a disastrous first inning, Oregon State starter Eric Segura seems to have settled in. For the second inning in a row, he held UC Irvine hitless.

Segura is at 68 pitches on the evening.

Top of the 3rd inning — Oregon State 5, UC Irvine 4

The Beavers loaded the bases for Travis Bazzana, but he popped out to left field to end the inning.

Bottom of the 2nd inning — Oregon State 5, UC Irvine 4

Eric Segura looked much sharper in the second inning and worked around a leadoff walk to produce a scoreless frame.

Top of the 2nd inning — Oregon State 5, UC Irvine 4

After a leadoff walk to Brady Kasper, opted to pull opener Nick Rincover. He threw a season-high 26 pitches. Rincover gave way to junior right-hander David Utagawa, who threw 2.0 scoreless innings against the Beavers on Saturday.

Utagawa issued a walk to Wilson Weber to put two on with nobody out. Then, Elijah Hainline stepped to the plate and clobbered a three-run homer to drag the Beavers back into contention.

After another pitching change, Travis Bazzana ambushed freshman lefty Ryder Brooks with a loud sacrifice fly to to plate Mason Guerra and tie the game at 4-4. Then, Gavin Turley followed with a double off the center field wall to put the Beavers back in front.

Brooks finally escaped the inning on a hard-hit Dallas Macias flyout to the right field warning track.

Bottom of the 1st inning — UC Irvine 4, Oregon State 0

Oregon State freshman starting pitcher Eric Segura had a nightmare start to the first postseason outing of his career. After a leadoff single from Woody Hadeen, Segura issued two straight walks to load the bases. Anthony Martinez got the Anteaters on the board with a groundout to second base to plate Hadeen.

Then, Dub Gleed launched a no-doubt, three-run homer into the right field bleachers to make it 4-0.

On his 40th pitch of the evening, Segura got out of the inning with a strikeout of Chase Call.

Top of the 1st inning — Oregon State 0, UC Irvine 0

UC Irvine is playing as the home team this evening. If another game is necessary to decide the regional on Monday, the Beavers will be the home team.

Anteaters' opener Nick Rincover worked around a two-out Gavin Turley walk to produce a scoreless inning.
