8 Best Excursions on Your Day Cruise to Bahamas from Fort Lauderdale

Boasting some of the most mesmerizing oceans and pristine islands, it’s no wonder that the Bahamas often leaves its visitors puzzled over which destinations to opt for during their Miami to Bahamas Day Trip.

But worry not, we have summarized the must-visit destinations on your 1 day cruise to Bahamas from Fort Lauderdale based on our years of experience. Read on to find out more.

Swim with nurse sharks at Compass Cay

A day trip to Bahamas won’t be as exciting without a visit to Compass Cay – an idyllic small island with a unique twist – shark-infested water.

But instead of running away from them, we encourage you to plunge into the azure water and swim among the docile sharks. Harmless to humans, these slow-moving pet sharks are filled with thousands of tiny serrated teeth that will strike only if provoked. So, do not try anything funny such as putting your hands around their mouth or tease them with objects.

For those that are not as adventurous, simply swing your legs over the jetty and feed the sharks with food prepared by the tour guides and staff at Compass Cay Marina. But, truthfully, you have nothing to fear.

Relax at Pipe Creek Cay Sand Bar

A striking sand bar in the middle of nowhere – Pipe Creek Cay Sand Bar is ideal for a private getaway where its solitude and scenic landscapes will take your breath away.

This tropical playground is often regarded as one of the most beautiful sandbars in the region. As great as the sandbar looks, don’t forget you can dive into the crystal clear water and uncover the kaleidoscopic underwater world.

Aerial view from a Bahamas Air Tours plane over the Exuma Cays. Take a one day cruise from Fort Lauderdale on a Bahamas day trip to Pig Beach or Pig Island.

Aerial view from a Bahamas Air Tours plane over the Exuma Cays.

Try local culture at Staniel Cay Yacht Club

To immerse in the local culture during your Fort Lauderdale Bahamas day trip, a visit to the Staniel Cay Yacht Club is a must.

A hub of tourists and locals alike, Staniel Cay Yacht Club offers an array of exciting experiences for you to indulge in. From exploring remote Bahamian villages and hopping on fishing trips with local fishermen to a lavish vacation at a waterfront bungalow and scuba diving trips, you can curate your perfect vacation here.

Staniel Cay activities on a day cruise to Bahamas from Fort Lauderdale

Perched just 80 miles southeast of Nassau – the capital city of the Bahamas, Staniel Cay is your ultimate gateway to explore the Exumas; where a collection of stunning and wondrous islands and cays are begging to be explored.

Thanks to the only airstrip in the area, the island is normally bustling with tourists despite having only a little over 100 residents. When you are not busy preparing to island hop through the Exumas, why not stroll around the area and socialize with the locals. You could even go shopping at one of their several retail stores.

Bahamas swimming pigs tours at Big Major Cay

Big Major Cay is the top highlight on your day cruise to Bahamas from Fort Lauderdale. With the dozens of Exuma pigs ruling the island, you will be awestruck upon floating to shore.

Also known as Pig Beach , Big Major Cay is the only place in the Bahamas where you can go on swimming pig tours and frolic with the Exuma pigs. Just a ten minute boat ride from Staniel Cay, you will be welcomed by the pigs before your boat even reaches the beach.

one day cruise fort lauderdale

The pigs at Big Major Cay will swim to your boat.

Iguana observing at Bitter Guana Cay

Exuma Pigs are not the only wildlife you can bump into during your one day cruise from Fort Lauderdale. Sailing south from Staniel Cay will take you to Bitter Guana Cay – a scenic island where the endangered Bahamian rock iguanas reside.

These friendly iguanas roam the island freely and are often curious about their visitors. This may be a good opportunity for you to snap some pictures with. But do not make them feel threatened as we cannot guarantee that they will not act in self defense.

Bahamian rock iguanas are in danger of extinction as it is estimated only 5,000 iguanas can be found in the world. So, while visiting, remember to protect these creatures and not feed them any food that they are not supposed to have (ask your guide for clarity).

Snorkel above a sunken drug cartel plane

Resting in the shallow water off Norman’s Cay is a sunken plane with an interesting story behind it.

This underwater plane was previously a drug-runner’s plane back in the 1980s. It was owned by the notorious drug dealer, Pablo Escobar, before crashing down in the northernmost area of Exuma Cays. Although both the pilot and drugs disappeared when the authorities arrived, you will still be able to take a look yourself. All you need is a snorkel and mask – both supplied by Bahamas Air Tours!

Adventure into 007’s Thunderball Grotto

Thunderball Grotto is the location of the iconic 1965 Hollywood blockbuster “Thunderball” where Sean Connery fought the villain in an epic underwater battle. Here, you can explore the adventurous side of the Bahamas during your 1 day cruise to Bahamas from Fort Lauderdale.

You can conquer your inner acrophobia by climbing through the cave ceiling and diving into an exotic adventure. Or, you can opt to snorkel into the cave through the underwater entrances while colorful fish swim by you. Either way, you will have a chance to be your own version of 007 and conquer the Bahamas.

For the price of $100 it was fine. You can't expect fancy and grand food for that price. The pool was small filled w/ kids. Not enough lounge chairs and people just leave their stuff on it and never use it and don't let others use it. I don't think you need to save a lounge chair for a kid or just your clothes. Friendly Staff. Cheap alcohol. NOT ENOUGH TIME IN THE BAHAMAS. We only got to spend two hours in the Bahamas and it takes 20 min to get to the beach. Because I was with my friends, it was enjoyable. Next time, I would stay in the Bahamas at least overnight.

First off we have cruised on real cruise sips before. We KNEW this was going to be a booze cruise and taxi service only to the Island, nothing elaborate...and that is all that it was. We decided to travel over Memorial Day Weekend...May 29 to be exact, just for something to do for the day. We opted for the Day Cruise...NOT a wise choice!!, everything was too rushed. We boarded the boat at 7am, had the buffet breakfast as everyone does, it was a mad cattle rush...right from the get go they are offering champagne or memosas...very cheap tasting liquor offered. From the buffet we walked the ship, that took all of 5 minutes, literally...for all of the floors...then we found a seat by the bar and by the DJ booth. We were offered drinks, alcoholic and non-alcoholic right from the beginning, and the wait staff was very prompt, but weak drinks and cheap alcohol served. We stuck with the Pina Coladas all day. They did have "entertainment". Bingo, limbo contest, hula hoop contest, and a few other ship activities. It kept you entertained, somewhat.......the people watching was the best of all. We did leave Fort Lauderdale on time and arrive in Port Lucaya on time (2pm) but were not allowed to leave the ship until around 330, they said they were waiting for customs to clear the ship.... We all (the whole ship) exited and all were hurded to taxis ($10.00 per person round trip) to get to town. If not you were allowed to stay by the ship and look at the lovely sights of the oil containers...we FINALLY got to the "town" about 4pm and had to meet the taxi at 5pm to make it back by 5:30, so we did not miss the ship and get left there...... All we had time for was to walk thru the straw market, which was mostly overpriced restaurants that sold American food, walk thru the casino, walk past the Radisson and walk thru the Our Lucaya Reef Village lobby..thats it!!! After the taxi back on the ship we had the buffet dinner, few more drinks then went on the top deck and took a nap on the lounge chairs....we had a 3 1/2 hour drive back home....we got to Fort Lauderdale on time-@1030pm and we did not get off the ship until 1210am!!!(waiting for "customs" again).... The wait staff was good and attentive, the food was ok-typical buffet slop, the ship was old with rust and small hallways but kept up pretty well for the age, the embarking and disembarking SUCKED....needs to be quicker and much more smooth!! and the time that you are told that you have on the Island needs to be ACCURATE!!! IF you go, definately opt for the night (or multiple nights) at one of the Island Hotels......BUT, for a Floridian, for something to do for the day, not too bad for the $85.00 per day per person (with no extras........cabin, excursions... ... ...) I use this as my justification....it would have costed me about the same for food, alcohol and gas for my jet ski for the day, so, it was a wash, price wise, and I can add Freeport, Port Lucaya to my list of destinations I have been to and never want to return to...

We booked this tour and then read reviews. It was lucky really that we had booked already because we would not have gone if we had read them first, and then would have missed out. You have to remember that you are going into another country along with a boat load of people all at the same time so there are waiting times. I felt that they did a good job with what they had. It is a very long day, picked up by mini-van at 7.15 then home again by 1.30 am. Time at Port Lucaya maybe 1.5 hours. We were lucky to have a perfectly calm day and watched lightning over the sea coming back. There is heaps to do on the boat and I enjoyed a movie, watching some good and bad karaoke, and learnt some latin american dance steps. The free drinks were as you would expect but other drinks were cheap. Staff were friendly and did not hassle for tips. We liked the food. As long as you know it is going to be like that then it is worth the trip. I did not think the boat looked bad at all - in fact I think you must have had a very priviledged life if you don't think you are lucky to be able to do this

OK....so I had to write a review about the Discovery One Day Cruise. Like many of you reading all these bad reviews I was disgusted and thought to myself there is no way I am going to try this day trip. But after contacting a traveller whom had said a few nice things to say about the one day cruise (1 traveller of not many!); I thought I'm going to try this out and just go with the flow. So glad I did! I was staying at the Clevelander and the bus came on time at 6.45am, and had about 8 other people in the van. The ride was about 30 mins or so to the port in Fotl Lauderdale. We arrive at the port and line up to give our passports and pay for the trip, all of this was done quickly. We then collected our tickets and began out walk to the boat; on arrival we are greeted by the staff and told that they are serving breakfast. Breakfast buffet consisted of everything E.g eggs, pancakes, sausages, ham, toast, fruit...very nice and tasted good. After breakfast you can then go any where on the ship that you like during its 4 hr travel time. I rented a cabin, and slept the whole journey as I had a late night the night before. The ship left on time. We arrive in the Bahamas (1.30pm) and are greeted by the travel officials, whom direct us outside by the cabs. On the boat you are able to purchase tour excursions, but we just took a $10 dollar round trip cab as did many other people to Port Lucaya...which had nice little shops, bars, restaurants, a live band, and a nice beach. Nice atmosphere and the people are very friendly. The cab came back at 5pm to collect people and we were back on the boat at 5.30pm; dinner buffet was then served at 7pm and consisted of chicken, lasagna, vegetables, steak, pasta, different types of salads etc... there was also fruit and cakes of all sorts. We had a great time on the boat and could not believe why people where moaning so much. I mean you are going to the Bahamas for under $200, and to think your getting great buffet food, entertainment, friendly staff for that small amount, what else could you ask for. Me and my friend were constantly asking each other what are people really moaning about. No its not a luxury cruise line, but its not terrible either. I would go again and I would recommend this trip to friends and family. I am not sure that others were expecting but I had fun and I am glad that I took a chance wit this trip. Docking off the ship was quick and smooth. I had no tipping issues and tipped as I pleased, I didn't have any of the staff begging me to tip them. Yes they do have cards on the table "suggesting what you can tip" but you are not hounded to do so. Cabin was also a nice size for 2 people with comfy bedding. I am one to moan if I think think something is terrible, but this surprised me and I am very glad that I took a chance with the Discovery One Day Cruise! Everyones experience will be different, but to have all bad reviews on trip advisor can put anyone off, but just take a chance and see for yourself!

For mothers day weekend My mom and I opted for the one day cruise to the Bahamas. It was terrible.... The boat was like a old ferry boat that they converted into a "cruise" Everything was outdated and worn out. For example; in the movie theater room the seats were old airline seats complete with tray tables! All of the carpets were stained and old. The free buffet that they advertise is disgusting, high school cafeteria food. They did have some free drinks however there were better drinks on the menu that you had to pay extra for. the pool deck was outrageous, all the seats were pretty much stacked on top of each other and if you have a large group you'd better get there first other wise you are out of luck! The day trip at the Bahamas was pretty nice once we arrived. We choose the beach excursion where we were escorted to a bar / beach lounge that had access to what looked like a private beach. It was beautiful. The food there was yummy wer had conch fritters and french fries, the staff there was great and the owner came around and introduced herself to everyone and asked if we needed anything which was a nice touch. Once back to the boat we waited on long lines to get on the boat and were served dinner, again disgusting! Diembarking off of the boat was a total nightmare. Because we had to go thru customs they grouped all of the travelers in the "night club" portion of the boat. There were crying children because of course it's around 1am and they are all exhausted, and the staff pretty much ignored them. Instead of making an exception and letting the children off of the boat first they disembarked by groups, which left the large crowd with frustrated parents and screaming kids, in now what is a hot ,sweaty room because all of the travelers (100's of people) are all lumped together. There was alot of pushing and shoving and just insanity. What a way to end your night! I wouldn't wish this nightmare on anyone!

We thought we knew what to expect as far a mediocre accommodations since we had taken the Discovery 2 years ago to the Bahamas. It is the cheapest way to get to Freeport in every sense of the word. They were offering a great special over Memorial Day weekend so we took advantage of the offer. We decided to get a stateroom to relax in for way there and what turned out to be a treacherous torture of a return sailing. The embarkation process in Fort Lauderdale was pretty organized and fairly efficient although I had to check my suitcase in even though we had a stateroom. The drinks were included, except the topshelf liquor which was very inexpensive, the staff is courteous and friendly which make up for the terrible food and the smell of mildew and vomit in our stateroom #5355 which also had a charming stain on the bed cover which I prayed did not come from a human. We stayed at the Radisson which was wonderful except for the broken ice machines, the lack of beach towels and the infamous Bahamian attitude. On the return, Discovery was poorly prepared to handle the Holiday crowd even though as a cruiseline they new well in advance exactly how many passengers to expect. They staffed 1-3 embarkation personnel for approximately 1,000 passengers. We stood in a mob with the other 988 passengers in a small space for nearly 2 hours before we finally made it into one of 3 lines for herding (boarding) us into the 1968 vessel. We had arrived at the port around 4pm for an expected 6pm sailing which left closer to 7:30 pm and arrived in Fort Lauderdale nearly 3 hours late. We rested in our stinky stateroom for the majority of the trip then waited an hour + to disembark and go through customs. Overall the Discovery is cheap cheap cheap, please read the reviews and be prepared for your trip as its is still the cheapest way for a day trip or vacation in the Bahamian paradise. - Camostar, Fort Lauderdale, FL

7 BEST CRUISES FROM FORT LAUDERDALE AND THE BEST PLACES TO VISIT

Published on January 17, 2020

Royal Caribbean's Instagram for Live Updates

You can cruise from just about every major port city in Florida — Miami, Tampa, Port Canaveral...you name it. But hands down, one of the most popular places to cruise from in the Sunshine State is Fort Lauderdale . The city’s Port Everglades is home to some of the best ships in the Royal Caribbean fleet — like the Allure of the Seas. In fall 2021, the cruise line’s newest ship, Odyssey of the Seas, returns from Europe to cruise from Fort Lauderdale to the Caribbean, too.

While the ships themselves are filled with tons of activities and attractions — let’s face it, nobody does the cruising like Royal Caribbean — one of the most important things that makes a cruise from Fort Lauderdale to the Caribbean truly unforgettable is the itinerary. Whether you choose an eastern or southern Caribbean sailing that takes you to St. Maarten and San Juan, or a western Caribbean sailing with stops in Cozumel and Falmouth, Fort Lauderdale cruises with Royal Caribbean take you to some of the most incredible shores in the tropics. We’ve rounded up some of the best tropical destinations you can visit on a Royal Caribbean cruise getaway from Port Everglades.

1. THE BAHAMAS AND PERFECT DAY AT COCOCAY

Perfect Day Coco Cay Up Up and Away Entering Balloon

If your planning on sailing from Fort Lauderdale, The Bahamas is just a hop and a skip away — but that doesn’t make the island any less exotic. With its lively beaches and bustling markets, Nassau always guarantees a great time. And nearby Grand Bahama Island is a go-to spot for honeymooners from around the world. The Bahamas are also home to Perfect Day at CocoCay , the newly reimagined private island destination by Royal Caribbean that has been making headlines and topping charts since it reopened last spring. You’ll find it all here — peaceful beaches with great snorkeling, a water park that boasts the tallest waterslide in North America, a helium balloon ride that offers spectacular views, and even the first Floating Cabanas in The Bahamas.

Cruises to the Bahamas: You can cruise from Fort Lauderdale to The Bahamas and Perfect Day at CocoCay on western, eastern, and southern Caribbean cruise itineraries onboard Allure, Odyssey, Wonder and Liberty of the Seas, which also sails short Bahamas getaways.

2. FALMOUTH, JAMAICA

Jamaica Falmouth Beach Sail Boat Blue Ocean

Cruise from Fort Lauderdale to Jamaica a western Caribbean jewel, and few of its cities shine as brightly as Falmouth. This picture-perfect port isn’t just beautiful to look at — though you’re definitely going to want to snap more than a few shots of its gorgeous pastel-colored verandas. It’s also teeming with unforgettable things to do, from tours of centuries-old plantations and rum distilleries, to beach breaks along pristine stretches of sun-soaked shoreline. Whatever your ideal way to spend the day ashore, Falmouth makes a great addition to any Caribbean getaway sailing from Fort Lauderdale.

Cruises to Falmouth, Jamaica: You can cruise from Fort Lauderdale to Falmouth, Jamaica on western Caribbean itineraries onboard Harmony of the Seas and Odyssey of the Seas.

Separated into French- and Dutch-governed sides, this southern Caribbean favorite is home to a global community made up of 120 different nationalities. Encompassing just 40 miles, St. Maarten is a tiny island that packs a real cultural punch. You’ll find plenty of great hiking trails within the Loterie Farm natural sanctuary, the Caribbean’s largest saltwater lagoon, Simpson Bay, and some of the most amazing food in the tropics in Philipsburg , the capital of the island’s Dutch side. One bite at any of the city’s East Indian, French, or Dutch eateries and you’ll see why St. Maarten is nicknamed “the gourmet capital of the Caribbean.”

Cruises to St. Maarten: You can cruise from Fort Lauderdale to Philipsburg, St. Maarten on eastern Caribbean itineraries onboard Allure of the Seas and Wonder of the Seas, and southern Caribbean itineraries onboard Vision of the Seas.

Most nature lovers head straight for Veragua Rainforest Park, a 3,212-acre nature reserve that’s home to prehistoric forests where you can see three-toed sloths, a biological exhibit where you can meet and talk to the area’s wildlife researchers, and an aerial tram that yields stunning views of the surrounding vegetation. If you’re a beach lover, you’ll find an abundance of unspoiled coastline. Playa Bonita and Playa Blanca are among the region’s top-rated shores.

The port city of Basseterre is peppered with stately monuments, like the Brimstone Hill Fortress. But if you really want to take your visit to the next level, hit the Mount Liamuiga trail for incredible island views or hop aboard the last railway in the West Indies for a scenic ride past sprawling estates and hilly green countryside — it’s one of the best ways to get a good look at the island. If you have time (or if it’s your second visit to this lovely isle) take a 45-minute ferry ride to Nevis for secluded white-sand beaches and incredible diving that rivals that of Cozumel.

Cruises to Basseterre, St. Kitts: You can Cruise from Fort Lauderdale to Basseterre, St. Kitts on southern Caribbean itineraries onboard Vision of the Seas, or eastern Caribbean itineraries on Allure of the Seas.

7. CARTAGENA, COLOMBIA

Colombia Cartagena Historic Cathedral and Buildings

Tropical island vibes, laid back beach towns, leafy plazas and impromptu merengue and cumbia parties on the streets... Cartagena, Colombia checks all the boxes for an idyllic coastal escape. You can spend a full day wandering the city on foot — it’s charming colonial monuments, museums and parks are well worth exploring. But if it’s a day at the beach you’re craving, you’ll find your own little slice of paradise at either Playa Blanca or Playa de Oro in Manzanillo del Mar.

Cruises to Cartagena, Colombia: You can cruise from Fort Lauderdale to Cartagena, Colombia on a Panama Canal itinerary onboard Enchantment of the Seas, or southern Caribbean itineraries onboard Vision of the Seas.

Things to Do in Fort Lauderdale Before a Cruise

one day cruise fort lauderdale

More than just being home to Port Everglades -- the busy embarkation port for cruises going to the Bahamas, Caribbean and beyond -- Fort Lauderdale is a popular sun-soaked vacation destination that begs to be explored before or after a cruise.

Boasting more than 300 miles of Intracoastal Waterway and navigable inland canals lined with lavish mansions and yachts, Fort Lauderdale is often referred to as the "Venice of America." Greater Fort Lauderdale consists of 23 miles of soft-sand beaches along the warm waters of the Atlantic Ocean, and a number of beach parks and natural attractions are located a stone's throw from the cruise port.

With so much to offer travelers, Fort Lauderdale draws many passengers to stay an extra day before or after their cruises. It's also a good idea to arrive a day early in case of airline delays, and visitors who extend their stays after their cruises will finally be able to explore a tropical destination without have to rush back to the ship.

If it's your first time in Fort Lauderdale, we've put together two ideas for a one-day itinerary that will keep you busy. The first option helps you get your bearings and a little taste of the main features of the city, while the second allows you to experience the area's natural offerings at some off-the-beaten path attractions.

Editor's caveat:These are just suggested itineraries, but there are endless options, both on the water and on land. Visit the Sunny.org website for more "cruise and play" ideas.

The Major Attractions

Breakfast: For a hearty breakfast at a reasonable price, Lester's Diner (250 W. State Road 84) isn't far from Port Everglades or the airport hotels. The diner has been serving American comfort food for nearly 50 years, and it's famous for its 14-once coffee cup. Those who prefer a quick breakfast on the go can grab a pastry at Gran Forno (1235 E. Las Olas Boulevard), the fabulous European-style bakery on bustling Las Olas Boulevard.

Morning: One of the best ways to get the lay of the land -- or, in Fort Lauderdale's case, the water -- is by hopping aboard the Water Taxi. These bright yellow boats offer narrated tours as they navigate the Intracoastal Waterway. Visitors can hop on and hop off at shops of Las Olas Boulevard (the main shopping area), Fort Lauderdale Beach, Hugh Taylor Birch State Park (a hidden gem that connects to the beach) and some iconic waterfront bars like the Pirate Republic Bar, Bahia Cabana or Shooters. Take time to wander the art galleries and boutique clothing stores of Las Olas, and enjoy some ice cream or fudge at one of the specialty shops. The Water Taxi runs every 15 to 30 minutes with the last stop at 10p.m., so visitors can utilize it all day.

Lunch: Take the Water Taxi to Esplanade Park (400 S.W. 2nd Street). From there, it's a short walk along the scenic riverfront to Briny Irish Pub (305 S. Andrews Avenue), a casual open-air restaurant that's covered from top to bottom with nautical decor and knickknacks. Menu items are a step above pub grub with a variety of seafood items, salads and sandwiches.

Afternoon: Soak up some sun at Fort Lauderdale Beach Park (Seabreeze Boulevard), a slice of sand on the south side of town that also has volleyball courts, picnic tables and a playground. From there, visitors can stroll north to Beach Place shopping center (Highway A1A) for souvenirs and frozen cocktails. Both Beach Place and Beach Park are stops on the Water Taxi. There's almost always music playing at the nearby Elbo Room (241 Fort Lauderdale Boulevard), the legendary bar made famous by the classic coming-of-age film, "Where the Boys Are." The second floor of this corner bar has a wraparound porch with some of the best views on the beach.

There is also a number of water activities -- like parasailing and jetskiing -- that can be booked from the beach.

Dinner: For an elegant but casual dinner near the beach, try Casablanca Cafe (3049 Alhambra Street), a Mediterranean restaurant with indoor and outdoor patio seating, beautiful ocean views and live piano music. They do not accept reservations, so arrive early to avoid a wait.

Evening: If you've had your fill of beach bars and restaurants, try your luck at the Seminole Hard Rock Hotel and Casino in Hollywood (1 Seminole Way, about 10 miles south of the port). In addition to the four-diamond rated hotel, the casino has 140,000 square feet of space with 2,200 slot machines and more than 90 table games, plus a comedy club, several nightclubs, trendy lounges and live musical performances from major acts in the 5,500-seat arena.

Greater Fort Lauderdale's Natural Side

Breakfast: Start the morning off by watching the sunrise on the beach, and catch breakfast at St. Bart's Coffee Co. (441 S. Fort Lauderdale Beach Boulevard), a charming little cafe with outdoor seating. The restaurant faces the ocean and is a perfect spot for people-watching.

The Wildlife Sanctuary of Flamingo Gardens (Photo: Jillian Cain Photography/Shutterstock)

Morning: Next, get up close with local wildlife at Flamingo Gardens (3750 S. Flamingo Road), a 60-acre tropical oasis that consists of the Botanical Gardens and Everglades Wildlife Sanctuary. The gardens are home to more than 83 native species, including alligators, bobcats, panthers, otters, eagles, peacocks and, yes, flamingos. There are also more than 3,000 species of plants and trees; a 25-minute narrated tram tour gives visitors some background information on South Florida's natural environment. It runs on the hour, every hour. Located 15 miles from the cruise port, you might need some wheels for this one. Several shuttle services in the area, costing around $65 to $75 for one to three people, can take you to Flamingo Gardens, or a taxi goes for around $55 one way (from Port Everglades). Most cost effective is a Flamingo Gardens package that includes roundtrip transportation from your hotel, plus admission, a tram tour, the wildlife encounter show and a museum tour for $45 per adult.

Lunch: Head southeast toward Dania Beach, and stop by the Rustic Inn (4331 Ravenswood Road), a classic, unassuming seafood restaurant that got its early start as a roadhouse saloon. Appetizers include raw oysters, spicy conch chowder and even fried alligator. (It's delicious.) The waterfront restaurant is known for its crab entrees, ranging from East Coast golden crabs and garlic blue crab clusters to Florida stone crab (when in season).

Afternoon: Rent kayaks, canoes and paddleboards from the marina at West Lake Park (1200 Sheridan Street) between Dania Beach and Hollywood, and explore the three-mile strip of mangrove estuary. (Be sure to call ahead for rentals, and check the weather that day.) There's much to do in this under-the-radar area. Anne Kolb Nature Park (751 Sheridan Street), on the north side, has hiking trails and a miniature theater with educational videos, as well as a 68-foot observation tower and 3,500-gallon saltwater aquarium. The parks are located across from one of the quieter stretches of sand, making it ideal for a beach break after paddling. A handful of tiki bars and low-key beach restaurants are scattered throughout, should you need a refreshment or snack. Just down the street (on A1A) is the Dania Beach Pier. Farther north is John U. Lloyd State Park (6503 N. Ocean Drive, Dania Beach) -- a perfect place to watch the cruise ships leaving Port Everglades as the sun goes down. Just remember you're on the flat East Coast, so views of the sun dropping below the horizon are difficult to come by. However, the sunsets do offer a peaceful, cotton candy-colored glow.

Dinner: After a tiring day on the water, kick back with dinner in downtown Fort Lauderdale before hitting the theater. The downtown area has a variety of restaurants to choose from, but if you're dressing up for the occasion, try YOLO (You Only Live Once) (333 E. Las Olas Boulevard) for contemporary American cuisine or Chima (2400 E. Las Olas Boulevard), a Brazilian Steakhouse with a tropical atmosphere. Both of these elegant venues are located near Fort Lauderdale's theater district, allowing ample time to catch a show. Dinner reservations are recommended.

Evening: After dinner, catch a show at the Broward Center for Performing Arts (201 S.W. 5th Avenue), an impressive theater that recently saw a massive expansion and remodel. The Parker Playhouse (707 N.E. 8th Street) is another excellent choice for live theater and is located just two miles from the Performing Arts Center. Both venues feature everything from ballet and improve comedy to shows from well-established artists and popular musicals.

Nighttime: Should you choose to continue your day after a performance, one of downtown's newest venues, Stache 1920's Drinking Den (109 S.W. 2nd Avenue), features a speakeasy vibe, premier craft cocktails, and live music -- just steps from the Broward Center for Performing Arts.

14 Best Things To Do In Fort Lauderdale, Florida

Sunny beaches, gondola rides on canals, and plenty of arts, culture, and shopping

one day cruise fort lauderdale

What To Do In Fort Lauderdale

Where to eat, where to stay, getting to and around fort lauderdale.

Art Wager/Getty Images

Situated between Miami and Palm Beach on Florida’s Atlantic coast, Fort Lauderdale sometimes gets short shrift when it comes to Florida vacation destinations compared to its glitzier neighbors. One of Florida’s largest cities, it spans 24 miles of beachfront along the Atlantic Ocean and stretches inland over the Intracoastal Waterway.

But you don’t need to look very hard to find plenty of reasons to stick around. From sunny beaches to gondola rides on canals, and plenty of arts, culture, and shopping along the way, Fort Lauderdale has proven that it's a destination worthy of your time.

Start At The Riverwalk

You could spend an entire weekend exploring the 22-block Arts and Entertainment District along the city's Riverwalk, which follows the New River in downtown Fort Lauderdale. In addition to many museums, this area has multiple parks and green spaces, restaurants, and is a lovely place to stroll.

Soak Up The Sun And Sand

With 24 miles of shoreline, you've got to include a little time on the beach while you're in the area. There's a beach here for every type of sun-seeker. Fort Lauderdale Beach is the most popular, and the most crowded. For a quieter experience, Vista Park has beach access with picnic tables and waterfront seating. Las Olas Oceanside Park has a splash pad and an amphitheater. There's even a dog-friendly stretch of sand called Canine Park.

Go Shopping On Las Olas Boulevard

Besides the scenic A1A Highway which runs north to south through the city, Las Olas Boulevard is a main thoroughfare through the heart of downtown, running east to west and offering boutique shopping, art galleries, and dining.

Check Out A Museum

If you’re looking to expand your horizons, head to the Museum of Discovery and Science or the NSU Art Museum , both located downtown. Keep tabs on events happening in two arts districts: MASS District Art Walk is a free outdoor event that runs the last Saturday of every month for 10 years and FAT Village (named for Flagler, Art, and Technology) is four blocks of Fort Lauderdale’s historic warehouse district teeming with creativity.

Head To The Wharf

A popular stop for those headed out on the water for a little daytime cruise is The Wharf , an outdoor spot on Las Olas Boulevard that hosts rotating food trucks, as well as bars, and various pop-up events.

Sistrunk Marketplace & Brewery

Find Something For Everyone At A Food Hall

Dining in Fort Lauderdale is a fully multicultural experience that delights the palate. Head to Sistrunk Marketplace & Brewery , Fort Lauderdale’s first food hall that opened in 2020, to get a good sampling of some cuisine from around the globe, from sushi to sandwiches, bibimbap to empanadas, in addition to live music events.

Sample Local Seafood

Most restaurants in Fort Lauderdale serve seafood in some form, but you can't go wrong at 15th Street Fisheries , located on the water at Lauderdale Marina. The restaurant has an upstairs dining room that's perfect for a romantic dinner, sunset views included. For a more casual meal, The Fisheries Dockside has an all-day menu, and Aqua Bar offers beer, wine, and cocktails.

Enjoy Jamaican Food

Or go get a little taste of Jamaica at Island in the Pines , dishing out island favorites like brown stew chicken, oxtail, cow foot and beans (best enjoyed accompanied with a bottle of ice cold Ting).

Cool Off With A Cone

At Cleveland’s Old Fashion Ice Cream in Miramar, they’ve been churning out 50 flavors of fresh ice cream for 40 years. If you have a hungry crew with you, order up the Ice Cream Chaffer, which is delivered in a metal handled serving container with eight flavors and all the toppings you can hope for.

Rich Stapleton/The Four Seasons

A Luxury Hotel For Pool Time And Pampering

The Four Seasons Fort Lauderdale opened in March 2022 in an oceanfront location on North Fort Lauderdale Beach Boulevard. Dine at Evelyn’s Table serving a Eastern Mediterranean/coastal-influenced menu, plus a soon-to-be-opened boulevard-level restaurant.

A Retro-Inspired Stay That's Great For Families

Kimpton Shorebreak Fort Lauderdale Beach Resort reopened in 2022 following a rebrand. Originally opened as the Escape Hotel in 1949, this property has long been prized by vacationers. With decor that celebrates its retro roots, guests can stretch their way through daily beach yoga classes, and use the Kimpton’s bikes, boogie boards, and children’s beach toys—all included in the daily resort fee.

A Fun Budget-Friendly Option For Adults

Plunge Beach Resort offers a great budget-friendly option in Lauderdale-by-the-Sea , and recently launched new adults-only bungalow accommodations. These exclusive environs include kitchenettes and dining rooms, welcome drinks, and access to a VIP lounge, as well as an adults-only pool and beach area.

Visit Lauderdale

A high-speed rail service , Brightline , operates a station in Fort Lauderdale, zipping passengers from Miami to West Palm Beach (with future expansions planned for Orlando and Tampa).

One of the best ways to explore the city is by water on the city’s 300 miles of navigable waterways. Take a Water Taxi for a guided tour through the town’s legendary mansions and mega yachts—hop on and off throughout the day for $35. Or plan a romantic electric gondola ride —you can bring your own picnic and enjoy watching the sights unfold through Fort Lauderdale’s canals. Airboats and jet skis are even more options for exploring these waterways.

Subscriber only, transportation | at long last, the u.s. 1 tunnel will finally reopen to all 4 lanes in downtown fort lauderdale.

Traffic backs up on the north side of the Henry E. Kinney Tunnel in Fort Lauderdale on Wednesday. A tunnel upgrade began in September 2021. The work was expected to take two years but is taking longer than expected. (Mike Stocker/South Florida Sun Sentinel)

That’s been the current situation at downtown Fort Lauderdale’s U.S. 1 tunnel for 32 months now.

Drivers have endured nightmarish gridlock since work began on the $31 million upgrade of the Henry E. Kinney Tunnel nearly three years ago. Many days, only two lanes have been open instead of the usual four. And on the worst days, the entire tunnel has been closed off to traffic.

In case you’re wondering when all four lanes of the tunnel will finally reopen, here’s the answer: By the end of the day Friday.

That’s according to the state Department of Transportation, the folks overseeing the work.

But don’t assume that means the lane closures are over.

According to DOT, the project won’t be completely done until September. Until then, we can expect to see more lane closures on an as-needed basis.

The tunnel turned into a dusty construction zone in September 2021, bringing detour after detour for commuters traveling through downtown Fort Lauderdale.

The work was expected to take two years, but supply shortages and bad weather caused unfortunate delays, DOT officials say.

Many drivers accustomed to using all four lanes of the tunnel keep hoping for the work to end — including Fort Lauderdale resident Frankie Kostoff.

Kostoff lives off Southeast 17th Street and works in an insurance office on Federal Highway north of Sunrise Boulevard. For her, the tunnel is the most direct route to work.

“I use it twice a day, six days a week,” Kostoff said. “I live 2.5 miles from my job and it took me an hour and 10 minutes to get to work one day. It was a parking lot. It’s insane.”

Kostoff said she has seen drivers make aggressive moves as they snake toward the tunnel. Recently, she saw one man blow through a light to bypass other cars in a race to get to the tunnel first.

“People anticipate the nightmare of the tunnel and do stupid things,” she said.

Traffic backs up on the southbound side of the Henry E. Kinney Tunnel Wednesday due to an ongoing construction project. The entire project should be done by September. (Mike Stocker/South Florida Sun Sentinel)

Fort Lauderdale has been getting angry complaints about the tunnel and its slowdowns for more than two years now, Mayor Dean Trantalis told the South Florida Sun Sentinel.

Some might consider the reopening of the tunnel a cause for celebration.

“We confirmed that all four lanes will be open by May 31,” Trantalis said. “It’s not so much a celebration as it would be a sigh of relief.”

The tunnel, long due for a makeover, opened in 1960 to replace a two-lane drawbridge in operation since the 1920s.

The upgrade included replacing ventilation fans and stormwater pumps; installing new LED lighting and bicycle-friendly drainage grates; upgrading electrical equipment and emergency lighting; and installing vehicle sensors to warn drivers whose vehicles are too tall to enter.

It should be decades before the tunnel is due for another upgrade.

Said Trantalis: “This is supposed to last for the next 50 years.”

"After great feedback from our fans and Alumni, we look forward to creating another experience for them by partnering with Seaside Events for the second year in a row," said Erica Muhleman, Senior Vice President of Corporate Partnerships, Cleveland Browns. "This journey allows Browns fans to visit beautiful locations, make lifelong memories that are second to none, and engage with the alumni and Legends that they admired during their playing time."

Cruise ships set sail out of Baltimore for the first time since bridge collapse

(CNN) —  Two cruise ships set sail for the sea from Baltimore this weekend for the first time since the Francis Scott Key Bridge collapsed.

Royal Caribbean’s Vision of the Sea left Baltimore on Saturday for a five-night voyage to Bermuda, according to Port of Baltimore Director Jonathan Daniels.

“Cruising is back at the Port of Baltimore,” Daniels said in a video  posted  on X from the Port of Baltimore account.

Carnival Cruise’s Pride followed suit on Sunday when the ship headed off   for a 14-day voyage to Greenland and Canada.

“Just a week ago, this terminal was being used as an incident command post. In one week, it’s been transformed back to starting out that guest experience,” Daniels announced in the video, as tropical cruise music played in the background, “The Port of Baltimore is back, cruising is back. It’s absolutely great to be able to welcome everybody here.”

In a  news release  posted on the state’s website Tuesday, the Port of Baltimore administration had said, “The Port of Baltimore’s permanent 700-foot wide, 50-foot-deep channel is expected to be reopened by the end of May.”

The Port of Baltimore was temporarily blocked following the March 26  collapse  of the Francis Scott Key Bridge. The 1.6-mile structure fell after the 213-million-pound   cargo ship Dali collided with the bridge   and struck one of its  crucial support columns.

In 2023, 444,000 passengers departed on cruises from the Port of Baltimore. The Port  supports  15,330 direct jobs and 139,180 jobs in Maryland, according to the state’s website. The cruise industry adds $63 million to Maryland’s economy, the  website  notes.
