When creators f<ck with how we experience time and space, great fictions emerge: Clive Barker's Imajica, Andrei Tarkovsky's sci-fi classic Solaris, and Godard's Alphaville. But what happens to artists when the flow of time gets f^cked up IRL? When an hour stretches into eternity, and the voices in your head begin to echo through empty rooms? If you’re Kevin Barnes, the creative visionary behind of Montreal, Freewave Lucifer f<ck f^ck f>ck happens.

Isolation and uncertainty loomed throughout the genesis of the band’s latest studio album. “The experience of just trying to keep my head above water and navigate through the last couple years played a huge role in this record,” says Barnes.

These expansive selections contrast markedly with the focused pop of 2020’s UR FUN, which was crafted for visceral thrills and the concert stage. As it was for countless musicians around the world, the inability to tour eliminated one of the linchpins of Barnes’ creative process. “I didn’t know if we’d ever tour again, so I didn’t consider that side of things.” Denied social interaction and diverse experiences, Barnes delved inward.

Sunday’s Tour de l’Île takes cyclists through Outremont, Snowdon, Lachine, LaSalle, Verdun, Sud-Ouest and Old Montreal, with optional longer routes on open roads to the West Island. Streets begin closing at 8:30 a.m. and 10:15 a.m. and reopen between 11:30 a.m. and 4 p.m.

Though there are overpasses and underpasses that allow vehicles to cross the route (including all highways), some areas — including an area of the Plateau-Mont-Royal bordered by Rachel St., St-Urbain St., St-Denis St. and des Pins Ave., will be inaccessible to vehicles coming in or going out for about two hours Friday evening. Full traffic information is available at velo.qc.ca .

Other major closures to watch for this weekend:

The Île-aux-Tourtes Bridge will be completely closed eastbound between St-Charles Ave. in Vaudreuil-Dorion and Anciens-Combattants Blvd. in Ste-Anne-de-Bellevue between 11 p.m. Friday and 8 a.m. Saturday. The ramp toward Highway 40 east from the Highway 40/30 interchange in Vaudreuil-Dorion will be closed during this time.

In Kahnawake, the ramp from Route 132 westbound to the Mercier Bridge, and from the Mercier Bridge to Route 132 east, will be closed between 2 a.m. Saturday and 8 p.m. Sunday.

In Laval, asphalt work will require closing the highway northbound between Samson Blvd. and Notre-Dame Blvd., from 11 p.m. Saturday to 3:30 a.m. Monday. The Samson Blvd. exit will also be closed from 11 p.m. Friday to 6 a.m. Saturday and there will be lane closures in both directions during the day on Saturday, including on the Louis-Bisson Bridge to and from Montreal.

Highways 25/440

In Laval, resurfacing work will be done on Highway 25 between St-Henri Rd. and Highway 440, requiring partial closures overnight starting Sunday, and on Highway 440 between Montée St-François and Route 335, requiring complete closure of the highway and diversion of traffic onto the service road. These disruptions will continue until the fall.

In St-Laurent borough, Marcel-Laurin Blvd. will be closed in both directions between Décarie Blvd. and St-Louis St., from 5 p.m. Saturday to noon Sunday.

Réseau Express Métropolitain

A systems update will delay the start of service on the REM Saturday to 7:30 a.m. Shuttle buses are available between 5:30 and 7:30 a.m.

Ongoing disruptions

Cyndi Lauper announces farewell tour

Cyndi Lauper  is retiring from the road. The “Girls Just Wanna Have Fun” singer-songwriter announced a farewell tour Monday morning, setting one last national jaunt that will take her to arenas in 23 cities in North America this fall before she calls it a day as a touring artist.

Lauper did not release any statement explaining her reasons for deciding to do a farewell tour now, although she is expected to talk about it later this week as she promotes a new documentary about her career, “Let the Canary Sing,” that premieres on Paramount+ Tuesday.

The Girls Just Wanna Have Fun Farewell Tour, which is being described as her first major road trip in a decade, will begin Oct. 18 in Montreal and end Dec. 5 at Chicago’s United Center.

Cyndi Lauper announces farewell tour

Arena dates she’ll be playing along the way include shows at New York’s Madison Square Garden on Oct. 30, Nashville’s Bridgestone Arena Nov. 1, L.A.’s Intuit Dome Nov. 23, the Acrisure Arena in Palm Desert Nov. 24, and San Francisco’s Chase Center Nov. 26. She will also be doing a non-arena show at Detroit’s Fox Theatre Oct. 24. (Scroll down for a complete list of tour dates.)

Tickets go on sale with an artist presale Tuesday, followed by other presales before the general on-sale begins Friday at 10 a.m. local time at LiveNation.com.

Opening acts will be announced at a later date.

“Let the Canary Sing,” directed by Alison Ellwood, which had its premiere at Tribeca last year, will begin showing on Paramount+ in the U.S. and Canada on Tuesday. That same day, Lauper will participate in a handprint ceremony at the TCL Chinese Theatre in Hollywood before attending a private local premiere of the film at the theater complex, to be followed by a Q&A. On Wednesday, she’ll be discussing the documentary and the farewell tour on “Jimmy Kimmel Live!”

Heavy traffic ahead for Montreal drivers this weekend, with events and closures

By Johanie Bouffard

Posted May 31, 2024 5:55 pm.

Last Updated May 31, 2024 6:08 pm.

The Tour de l’Île and Tour la Nuit, as well as numerous construction sites will make the drive for Montreal motorists this weekend challenging.

There will also be multiple street closures downtown amid the national funeral for Quebec singer Jean-Pierre Ferland on Saturday.

And next week: Grand Prix festivities.

Motorists are strongly advised to plan ahead before getting on the roads.

“This Friday, between 7:30 p.m. and late in the evening, nearly about midnight, you will get some road closures in town. The [Tour la Nuit] circuit will go on the territory of three boroughs. So for Friday, avoid riding your car in the Plateau in Ville-Marie and in the southwest boroughs. On Saturday, we also have national funeral for Jean-Pierre Ferland. It’s at [Mary Queen of the World Cathedral], so avoid René-Lévesque between Peel and Mansfield,” says Philippe Sabourin, spokesperson for the City of Montreal.

Starting at Jeanne-Mance Park, cyclists will head south of Jean-Talon and then west of Decarie, before proceeding through the city’s southwest, passing through parts of Old Montreal, and ultimately returning to Jeanne-Mance Park.

“This weekend, I’m going to try to not come into Montreal. I’m going to stay here in the chalet,” says on Montreal driver CityNews spoke with on Friday.

“Every year, it’s always like that. I prefer not to work on weekends, because if normally this kind of event, I prefer not to work here,” says a taxi driver.

“I’d just be taking public transports,” says another Montreal motorist.

The Saint-Pierre interchange ramp leading from the Honoré-Mercier bridge to Highway 20 westbound – towards Dorval and the airport – will be completely closed to traffic this weekend. Also, a partial closure is planned for Route 138 eastbound heading towards the interchange.

Highway 25 and 440 will be closed to traffic overnights starting Sunday for road resurfacing correction work – until fall. Motorists are advised to check Quebec 511 for other closures before heading out on the road.

“The best piece of advice this weekend, if you have to move around because of those two events for the cyclist, look out for the website at Vélo-Québec . They’re providing many maps, all the information, and they also provide a phone line to help you out. There are many breaches that allow you as motorists to go through the circuit of Tour de l’Île, but the information will be provided by Vélo-Quebec, online,” says Sabourin.

Defending champ’s wife goes skydiving at RBC Canadian Open

Andie taylor’s observation sparked husband nick’s dramatic turnaround in 2023.

Change Text Size

ANCASTER, Ontario – Andie Taylor’s keen observations from afar sparked her husband Nick’s historic RBC Canadian Open victory a year ago.

The roles were reversed Wednesday, a day before Taylor begins a historic RBC Canadian Open title defense. Andie Taylor went skydiving from 12,000 feet, landing on an adjacent fairway at Hamilton Golf and Country Club (the club has three nines, one of which is unused for tournament play).

Andie Taylor was joined by Lona Dahmen (wife of Joel) in Wednesday’s skydive in southern Ontario, a tournament tradition in conjunction with the Canadian military. Jessica Hadwin (wife of Adam) was originally scheduled to join Andie in the skydive, but she couldn’t make it at the last minute. Andie recruited Lona, who quickly accepted.

Nick Taylor had completed his pro-am round and was on the scene, observing the landing in real-time (several SkyHawks, members of the Canadian Armed Forces Parachute Team, also participated in the dive). Joel Dahmen followed along during his pro-am round, utilizing binoculars.

Lona joked afterward that she would skydive every day if she could – Andie wasn’t so sure. Nonetheless it was a shared family experience that accents a unique week, as Nick Taylor prepares to defend his historic title. Last year, he became the first Canadian winner of the RBC Canadian Open since Pat Fletcher in 1954, defeating Tommy Fleetwood with a 72-foot eagle on the fourth playoff hole. The victory resonated across the entirety of Canada – stories included farmer Brian Harder in Saskatchewan, so excited that he nearly crashed his tractor while streaming the action. The ‘I” in the “RBC Canadian Open” logo is now a silhouette of Taylor’s instant reaction to the winning putt, tossing his putter in near-bewilderment.

That victory might not have happened without Andie’s keen observation while watching competition from home on the Thursday of last year’s RBC Canadian Open. Taylor made a closing double bogey for an opening 75 at Oakdale Golf & Country Club, and not only was he far from contention, his chances of playing the weekend were slim. (Of the 886 times a player opened a TOUR event in 75 or higher last year, 790 either missed the cut, withdrew or were disqualified. Only five finished in the top 10, and Taylor was the only winner.)

During a phone conversation that evening, Andie told her husband to lighten up a bit. It was his home open, after all. Enjoy it.

“It just looks like you’ve not having fun,” Andie told her husband, who relayed the story Wednesday in Hamilton. “You and (caddie) Dave (Markle) go be yourself tomorrow; cut it out essentially.”

“I knew my game was in a good spot,” Taylor continued. “It was a weird day and weird mindset … it was a bit of a mindset change, really having nothing to lose starting Friday. I knew I needed to shoot at least 4 under to make the cut; I was kind of like, ‘Alright, better play well.’

“(The start) was disappointing in a sense for a lot of reasons, because you want to play well at this event especially. I had really nothing to lose that Friday, and that was a good mindset to be in. Be aggressive.”

Taylor took his wife’s words to heart, and he closed in rounds of 67-63-66 to earn a playoff spot at 17 under, then authored an iconic winning moment as an adoring nation looked on.

Taylor, 36, didn’t stop there. He won this year’s WM Phoenix Open (also in a playoff), further solidifying a clutch gene that was seen 10 years ago, when he carded a final-round 63 at the Korn Ferry Tour Championship to solidify his first PGA TOUR card. He stands No. 32 on the FedExCup and is well positioned to represent Canada in this summer’s Olympic Games and at this fall’s Presidents Cup at Royal Montreal.

Could he also go back-to-back at his national open? Sky’s the limit.

One of the many new Netflix sports docu-series to debut in 2023 has been handed a season 2 order. Tour de France: Unchained will return for a second season in 2024.

Debuting on Netflix for the first time in early June 2023, Tour de France: Unchained gives you unparalleled access to behind-the-scenes of the world’s most famous cycling race. The documentary series was released in French audio with a range of subtitle and dub options, including English.

Eight episodes dropped globally (after airing on France Télévisions) on June 9th. The series featured  in the global non-English TV top 10 for a single week, picking up 8.2 million hours watched globally between June 11th and 18th.

The renewal news comes via a Tweet by Netflix France . The Tour de France followed up Netflix France’s announcement in an additional Tweet, saying :

“See you next year @NetflixFR! A series made possible thanks to @francetv and the cycling teams!”

Season 2 will follow the forthcoming 2023 Tour de France, scheduled to begin at the end of July 2023 . The event takes place over 21 stages beginning in Northern Spain and concluding in Paris; it’s been confirmed 22 teams will be competing for the grand prize.

The renewal of Tour de France: Unchained means that we’ll see the return of numerous sporting documentaries in 2023. Full Swing , Formula 1: Drive to Survive, and Break Point have all been handed renewal orders, each set to return in 2024. All of the aforementioned shows (including Unchained) are produced by the British outfit Box to Box Films.

Those returning series are in addition to other various sports documentaries Netflix currently has in the works for other sports like soccer, the NFL, rugby, and WWE.

Are you glad to hear that Tour de France: Unchained is returning for a second season? Let us know in the comments.
