The Province has released a new commercial to promote Nova Scotia.

It starts with a couple in a bar debating with a guy about how much coastline Nova Scotia has. They then embark on a trek around the Province with key locations highlighted.

The song is from Matt Mays and was the perfect choice!

Notice the attention to detail at the end when they go back to the bar. Well done!

Nova Scotia launches new tourism campaign

By CityNews Halifax Staff

Posted Mar 6, 2023 07:44:00 PM.

The province has launched a new marketing campaign to encourage people to spend their vacations in Nova Scotia to help build on the tourism industry's strong recovery.       The campaign is called “Your Ocean Playground” and will run through the end of summer in Ontario, Quebec, Connecticut, Maine and Massachusetts.

“Last year, we saw visitors return in a significant way, with accommodation sales even surpassing 2019 numbers,” said Pat Dunn, Minister of Communities, Culture, Tourism and Heritage. “We want to build on that momentum and help our tourism industry thrive.”       The Houston Government says it's also advertising overseas in Germany and the United Kingdom and running year-round ads in Nova Scotia and Atlantic Canada.       The government will invest an additional $2.7 million this year in campaigns to support earlier and extended marketing of the province for a total of about $8.6 million in 2023.

100+ ways Nova Scotia businesses are reshaping the tourism landscape

From: Atlantic Canada Opportunities Agency

News release

Over the past two years, Nova Scotia’s tourism operators have doubled down to build experiences, accommodations, and strategies to strengthen Canada as a destination of choice – spearheading more than 100 projects through the Government of Canada’s Tourism Relief Fund. That work continues, and ACOA is here to help businesses as they attract more visitors to the region and grow the industry with fresh approaches to delivering world-class tourism.

Government of Canada invests $6.3 million in 53 new tourism projects to enhance offerings for visitors May 24, 2023 · Kjipuktuk, Mi'kma'ki | Halifax, Nova Scotia · Atlantic Canada Opportunities Agency (ACOA) Over the past two years, Nova Scotia’s tourism operators have doubled down to build experiences, accommodations, and strategies to strengthen Canada as a destination of choice – spearheading more than 100 projects through the Government of Canada’s Tourism Relief Fund . That work continues, and ACOA is here to help businesses as they attract more visitors to the region and grow the industry with fresh approaches to delivering world-class tourism. Today, the Honourable Ginette Petitpas Taylor, Minister of Official Languages and Minister responsible for ACOA, announced over $6.3 million in Tourism Relief Fund (TRF) support to 53 projects with businesses and organizations across Nova Scotia. This is in addition to the $7.1 million in previously announced TRF support contributions to 52 Nova Scotia businesses since the program launched.

Minister Petitpas Taylor showcased six of the new projects from across the province that demonstrate the TRF’s focus on building, upgrading and diversifying innovative tourism products:

  • $500,000 to Eskasoni First Nation to help Eskasoni Cultural Journeys , an award-winning immersive Indigenous experience, become a year-round destination with new programming.
  • $500,000 to Saltair Nordic Spa & Wellness in Baxter’s Harbour to establish a year-round wellness destination complete with Nordic pools and a trail system.
  • $121,998 to the Nova Scotia Museum of Natural History in Halifax to construct a new, long-term exhibit called Pjila'si, meaning "welcome” in Mi'kmaw, celebrating the history and lives of the Mi'kmaq People in Nova Scotia.
  • $100,000 to Kabina in Tatamagouche to develop a six-unit tiny home year-round wilderness accommodation located close to the Wentworth ski hill.
  • $100,000 to the Quarterdeck Resort in Summerville to increase the number of accommodations available to tourists.
  • $41,500 to the Friends of McNabs Island Society in Halifax to develop interpretive and resource materials for the restored Teahouse building which has been converted into an Outdoor Education Centre on McNabs Island.

Launched in July 2021, the TRF has helped organizations in the tourism sector upgrade their products and services, enticing new visitors, and reinvigorating the economy. ACOA, along with Canada’s other regional development agencies, have been delivering the $485 million in TRF support.

“We have so much to be proud of in our beautiful region, and so much to share with visitors. As we launch the tourism season, we are reaffirming the sector’s vital importance to our economy, and our commitment to helping tourism businesses and organizations in Nova Scotia develop the world-class experiences that make Atlantic Canada such a sought-after destination.” -  The Honourable Ginette Petitpas Taylor, Minister of Official Languages and Minister responsible for ACOA
“It’s time for Canada’s tourism sector to push past reviving all the way to thriving. Our government’s investments in tourism over the last three years focused on sustaining and rebuilding the tourism ecosystem, promoting what we have and designing for the future. A fully recovered and robust tourism sector is key to our government’s ongoing work to build an economy that works for everyone. Together, we can make sure that Canada’s tourism sector is something that visitors and Canadians alike will celebrate and enjoy for generations to come." -  The Honourable Randy Boissonnault, Minister of Tourism and Associate Minister of Finance
“Over the past two years, ACOA has stepped up to ensure the Nova Scotia tourism industry could survive the devasting impact of COVID-19. The Nova Scotia tourism economy lost $3.2 billion in revenue during the height of the pandemic, and the Tourism Relief Fund program greatly helped stabilize and mitigate business losses. Going forward, strategic and focused investment in our tourism infrastructure will be a priority, as we rebuild tourism and trade in the region.” - Darlene Grant Fiander, President, Tourism Industry Association of Nova Scotia (TIANS)
“Eskasoni First Nation is so excited to launch the new initiatives that we have planned for Cultural Journeys. It has always been our goal to provide a quality experience that is authentic to the Mi’kmaq culture; we want guests to have the opportunity to learn, engage in our tourism product as it allows the visitors to our beautiful Island to be fully immersed and get to enjoy the uniqueness of our Eskasoni all year round.” - Alyssia Jeddore, Business Development Manager, Eskasoni Corporate Division
“The Annapolis Valley and Nova Scotia were already on the world’s map as naturally memorable and inspirational places to visit and explore. We are thrilled to invest and operate a business that inspires Health and Wellness that will welcome guests from around the world. ACOA’s recognition and initial support of Saltair Nordic Spa as a four-season destination was a key catalyst in raising the funds to put this wellness tourism site in Baxters Harbour on the natural wonder that is the Bay of Fundy. Nature is waiting.” - June Pardy and Jenny Sinclair, Saltair Nordic Spa & Wellness
“ Mi’kmaw culture has always been resilient and sustainable, and the Pjila’si gallery celebrates that. Pjila’si creates a safe and reflective space for the public to see, understand and appreciate Mi’kmaw culture.” - Jeff Gray, General Manager of the Museum of Natural History
“We are very, deeply proud of being from the east coast and it is very rewarding to know we are not only able to advocate for this special place but also facilitate and encourage new travellers to come and experience the area. ACOA has been a game changer for entrepreneurs like us as they not only provide financial support but also executional support. We have felt ACOA has been at the table right next to us from the initial concepts right up until now; they have shown just as much passion for the project as we have and we are all just really excited to get this new venture off the ground, up and running and improving the local experience for travellers.” - Sawyer Hannay, Director, Kabina
“Our growth strategy included providing a different type of offering – lower priced, family-focused accommodations that are pet friendly. Our vision of transforming a seasonal vacation spot into a year-round world-class resort is unfolding as planned. Our newest project is in line with this vision, which will ultimately help strengthen the economy in Queens County by attracting visitors to the region and providing much needed jobs. This grant has helped us achieve this.” - Todd Webb, Chief Financial Officer, Quarterdeck Resort
“This funding for the Island’s Teahouse Outdoor Education Centre will enhance the coastal island experience for visitors of all ages. New displays, brochures, maps and interpretive materials will allow visitors to learn more about this historic “Green Jewel” of Halifax Harbour.” - Catherine McCarthy, President, Friends of McNabs Island Society

Quick facts

The Tourism Relief Fund was a $500-million national program to support the tourism sector in Canada, including $485 million for regional priorities administered by Canada’s regional development agencies and $15 million for national priorities administered by Innovation, Science and Economic Development Canada.

A minimum of $50 million of the fund’s budget was earmarked for Indigenous tourism projects. Indigenous communities that rely heavily on tourism were disproportionately affected by the pandemic.

$48.5 million from the Tourism Relief Fund was allocated to the Atlantic Canada Opportunities Agency to administer in the Atlantic region.

The Tourism Relief Fund ended on March 31, 2023.

Non-profit transit service forced to relocate due to Kentville fire

Kings point to point transit lost records and communications in fire on tuesday.

Social Sharing

A non-profit transportation organization in Kings County sustained major setbacks in a fire that tore through a commercial building in Kentville, N.S., on Tuesday.

Kings Point to Point Transit lost its records and communications technology and is now seeking an interim operations centre, says Berwick town councillor Chris Goddard, who is on the organization's board of directors.

"The building is in rough shape. We were forced to move out of there with basically nothing," Goddard said.

"We are now operating out of a small single office that's been loaned to us and we're looking for a temporary facility by next week so that we can continue operating."

The Purple Peacock thrift shop, a non-profit business that had just recently celebrated its one-year anniversary in the Aberdeen Street building, was also extensively damaged in the fire.

  • Charitable group's loss likely in tens of thousands of dollars after Kentville fire, owner says

Kings Point to Point has offered accessible transportation services to people in Kings County for the past 25 years. According to Goddard, it provides roughly 100 trips per day to clients using a fleet of vans, minivans and a minibus.

He said there are no alternatives in the area to the services they offer.

After losing their means of communication in the fire, Goddard said staff and volunteers are using their own phones to communicate with clients.

"We are operating at a reduced capacity, but we're doing our utmost to make sure that the people who need it the most get it."

He said the organization is working to restore its services and estimates it will take two to four weeks to be fully operational again.

Nova Scotia tourism hurt by ferry cancellations as tourist season winds down: mayor

P ICTOU, N.S. — The mayor of a Nova Scotia town says recent disruptions to the ferry service that links the province with eastern Prince Edward Island are posing a real challenge for the town's tourism industry.

Pictou Mayor Jim Ryan said tourists routinely stop in the town as they make their way to the nearby ferry terminal in Caribou, N.S., but that hasn't happened since the vessel was pulled from service earlier this week.

"It's a real challenge," Ryan said in an interview Thursday.

"Obviously the silver lining is that it's not in the middle of tourist season right now, but there are still a lot of people travelling … who have disposable income."

Without ferry service, people travelling to P.E.I. will likely take the Confederation Bridge — which begins in New Brunswick — instead of driving to Caribou and making a stop in Pictou, Ryan said.

The service was halted Tuesday after the MV Saaremaa began experiencing “technical issues.” That disruption came after the MV Confederation, which also transports people along the same route, was taken out of service on Sept. 15 when it ran into a wharf.

"It's the unpredictability of the whole service that is at stake here going forward if people are having to decide if, 'well, I wonder if (the ferry) is running today?'"

Northumberland Ferries, which operates the two vessels, says repairs to the main engine of the MV Saaremaa have yet to be completed, and the ship won't be ready for testing until Monday or Tuesday. Service between Caribou and Wood Island, P.E.I., is expected to resume on Wednesday morning.

This report by The Canadian Press was first published Sept. 26, 2024.

Alberta's tourism sector broke its previous record for visitor spending last year.

  • Download the CTV News App for breaking news alerts on all the top Edmonton stories

Last year's international visitor spending also broke its previous record set in 2019 by 25 per cent; 2023 saw an increase of $2.9 billion from 2019's $2.3 billion.

"This past February, Alberta’s government launched a long-term tourism strategy, setting the bold and ambitious goal of growing Alberta’s visitor economy from $10 billion in annual visitor expenditure to $25 billion annually by 2035," said Joseph Schow, the tourism and sport minister.

"We are well on our way to reaching our goal," he added.

While this year's tourism spending numbers are not yet released, it's important to note that Jasper National Park was closed for two months due to wildfires which could have an impact on 2024's visitor spending numbers.

Electrify Canada expands network in Nova Scotia and Quebec

Electrify Canada expands network in Nova Scotia and Quebec

Electric vehicle charging station network Electrify Canada is expanding, introducing new stations in Nova Scotia and strengthening its presence in Quebec.

The company has announced the addition of 40 super-fast chargers, capable of speeds of up to 350 kW, located along popular and busy roads, as well as near commercial areas and restaurants. The objective behind this decision is to support and encourage the adoption of electric vehicles across Canada.

And as the figures show, things are going well in Canada as sales continue to grow. The pace is a little slower than anticipated a few years ago, but more and more electric vehicles are being sold, both in number and proportion.

Expansion in Quebec includes the addition of five new stations, in Greenfield Park and Laval in the Montreal region, as well as Mont-Tremblant, Quebec City and Saint-Hyacinthe. They join existing stations in Drummondville, Mirabel, Repentigny, Sherbrooke, Saint-Romuald and Trois-Rivières.

Greenfield Park and Laval will host the network's first eight-vehicle charging stations.

Une station de recharge Electrify Canada à Sherbrooke, au Québec

Electrify Canada has also established a presence in Nova Scotia, with new stations in Amherst and Bedford. These locations are strategically situated close to the New Brunswick border and within easy reach of Halifax for inter-provincial travel.

With this new expansion, Electrify Canada moves into a seventh province in the country. Steven Guilbeault, federal Minister of the Environment and Climate Change, stated that “Every year, hundreds of thousands of Canadians are saving by switching from paying at the gas pump to driving electric vehicles - and they are right to expect affordable, reliable, and accessible charging options wherever they go. We are pleased to be working with Electrify Canada to deliver dozens of new hyper-fast charging stations for drivers across Quebec, Nova Scotia, and beyond.”

While the news is great for Quebec, it's even better for Nova Scotia, where the network needs a boost to attract more consumers.

Masking reintroduced in N.S. hospitals as respiratory illnesses increase

A partial masking mandate has returned to Nova Scotia hospitals and provincially run healthcare facilities for visitors and healthcare workers.

"This is for anybody who is in clinical areas in the hospitals, inpatient units and clinics where we are providing direct patient care,” said Nova Scotia Health senior medical director Shelly McNeil.

  • Top health headlines, all in one place

Infectious diseases specialist Dr. Lisa Barrett said these regulations implemented on Thursday may seem to be limited to Nova Scotia in scope, but they are in response to the latest COVID-19 variant and its recent spread.

“You don’t need to look at the provincial numbers on surveillance to know that there is a lot of COVID out there,” said Barrett, who added the spread of the virus is in hospitals and communities across Canada, not just in Nova Scotia.

“Certain hospitals around the country have gone back to masking inside their walls in most places where patients are around in order to protect them.”

Barrett emphasized that even with the implementation of the vaccine, COVID-19 is still dangerous.

“COVID, even though we want to consider it run of the mill in all provinces is competing with the flu and there are still more deaths and hospitalizations from COVID than even from influenza,” said Barrett.

The flu, whooping cough and respiratory syncytial virus (RSV) spread are also mounting concerns in many areas of Canada.

nova scotia tourism commercial 2023

Calgary’s Katrina Bellavance said she was caught off guard when her baby contracted RSV in February 2023.

"It was scary, and she was hospitalized for several days,” said Bellavance. “When we made the call to take her into emergency, it was because she couldn't breathe."

Bellavance said the return of some mask mandates could help other families avoid what her family and daughter experienced.

"I think that it's so important that we protect the most vulnerable around us,” said Bellavance.

The masking changes are new for Nova Scotia, but not for other parts of Canada. In New Brunswick, masking for healthcare workers and patients was reintroduced earlier in September by the Horizon Health Network.
