Photos of Essex Outdoors Mersea

What will students see and do.

For over 50 years, Essex Outdoors Mersea has been one of the leading outdoor activity centres in the South East. Located on 60 acres of land on Mersea Island, the unique coastal location and its surrounding habitat offers some special activities and learning opportunities.

With day trips and residential trips available for primary to college and FE pupils, the range of activities available is unrivalled in the region. You can create a custom itinerary based on the desired outcomes for your group, from team-building to outdoor skills.

Activities are designed to encourage learning beyond the classroom, and to help pupils push through their comfort zones, whether that’s taking to the skies with climbing and rope challenges, visiting the coast to learn about local marine life or discovering bushcraft and forestry skills.

If you’re looking for school residential trips in Essex, look no further. Essex Outdoors Mersea offers several accommodation options, from heated cabins to camping pods. Residential visits start from a single night, up to a five-night stay.

The indoor accommodation centre can sleep 48 guests across five bunk rooms and two ensuite staff rooms. The centre also offers a group of nine cabins which sleep 54, camping pods that accommodate 64, and large log cabins sleeping 50.

If you’re opting for traditional camping, up to 300 visitors can camp in tents. Bedding can be included at an additional cost.

As well as the key daytime activities offered, residential students can enjoy evening activities like camp fires, silent discos, and ‘It’s a Knockout’ tournaments.

How does the trip link to the curriculum?

The centre has developed activities suitable for KS2 up to Further Education level. Below is a breakdown of how different activities can meet curriculum objectives.

Each of the KS2 activities are tied to specific learning outcomes. You can discuss these with the centre team to put together the perfect itinerary for your objectives.

Adventure and obstacle courses build communication skills and teamwork. The aerial adventure courses develop resilience, commitment, and managing risk. The high ropes, low ropes and climbing courses are also fun learning opportunities, building resilience, commitment and teamwork.

Students can learn about marine life and river geography with a boat trip from the jetty at West Mersea. There’s also the opportunity to go crabbing. The coastal discovery workshop teaches pupils about the seashore life at the Blackwater estuary.

During bushcraft classes or a wild camping experience, participants learn how to build a shelter and light a fire with natural materials. Orienteering and map skills workshops introduce important life skills for problem solving and teamwork.

Raft building encourages resource management, communication, and planning. This combines well with the pioneering workshop, which teaches traditional techniques like medieval catapult making.

Archery workshops encourage students to develop concentration and confidence. Meanwhile, heading underground with a caving class teaches resilience and managing risk.

For KS3 and 4, variations of all of the KS2 courses can be adapted to match your learning outcomes. For these older students, you can add on activities like all-terrain boarding to develop confidence and commitment.

For KS3, GCSE, AS and A2 level students, field survey courses can be arranged. These can take place at any of the local environments, from woodland and marshes to streams and estuaries.

Alternatively, the experts can come to you and arrange a course at a nearby site of your choice. All materials are provided for data collection and statistical interpretation.

Check Mersea Island Tide Times Before Visiting!

One of the top things you need to do before visiting Mersea Island is to check the time of the tide on Mersea Island.

The Strood causeway is the only road to the island, which is covered by the tide only twice a day for one week out of the month. When the tide covers the Strood, Mersea Island is isolated from the mainland for about an hour and a half during high tides.

If you are asking how do I check the tide before I visit Mersea Island? Well, to check the tide, you can view the tide times for West Mersea here .

Be advised that if the tide is 5.00 metres and above, it will likely cover the Strood. In this situation, allowing up to an hour and a half either side of the tide, before crossing safely is advised.

History of Mersea Island

What to do in Mersea Island

Mersea Island gets its name from the Old English word “meresig”, which means “island of the pool”. This is a fitting name as the island sits surrounded by water. The island’s only connection to the mainland is the Strood, a causeway that submerges fully during high tide.

Mersea Island, one of the most easterly islands in Britain, has been inhabited since pre-Roman times. The island originally served as a popular holiday destination amongst the people of Camulodunum (modern-day Colchester).

Evidence of this is the remains of Celtic workings, famously known as the Red Hills, as well as the Church of St Peter & St Paul.

The island was also a popular fishing village, renowned for its incredible oysters. This is evident by the fish traps found here, which along with the church, dates back to as early as the seventh century. Fishing has remained a key industry and attraction to this day.

Along with being a popular holiday destination in Roman Britain, Mersea Island was a focal point for troops in World War I and World War II. Various observation posts can still be seen on the island. You can observe more of Mersea Island’s rich history through the various attractions found on the island.

Handy tip: Prepare Ahead Of Time!

Mersea Island is divided into West Mersea and East Mersea. The East side is quieter and more rural.

The West Mersea is busier and is where you’ll find the pastel-coloured beach huts, can do water sporting activity, crabbing and where you’ll also find the oyster shed and other local restaurants. And where you’ll find the pastel-coloured beach huts if that is what you are looking for.

To get from West Mersea to East Mersea is around an hours walk, 8 minutes by car and 17 minutes by bike. This guide includes things to do in West Mersea and things to do in East Mersea Island.

Why Visit Mersea Island?

England, Essex, Me on Mersea

So if I haven’t already spelled it out in the intro, Mersea Island is the ideal break for those looking for an easy and stress-free seaside escape from London.

Just a few hours’ drive away, you can be relaxing on the beautiful sandy shores of Essex in no time from the capital, eating delicious fresh seafood and raising a glass in your beachside accommodation to a setting sun over a sandy shore.

That’s right, a sandy shore! And lots of it!

Because, being an island, Mersea has plenty of beautiful coastal spaces perfect for strolling, sitting, sunbathing, paddling and tootling along.

The island is small and feels wonderfully safe, so spending a day or 2 here is the perfect way to unwind and relax – miles away from the hectic urban pace of life.

Where is Mersea Island?

England, Essex, The Strood

So, as I’ve mentioned a few times, Mersea Island is in the county of Essex, which sits in the east of England, on the outskirts of London.

Under 10 miles from the Essex city Colchester, Mersea Island sits off the southern edge of the coastline here.

And island is the key word here, as there’s just one road in and out of Mersea, which is called The Strood.

About once a month – when there are large, spring tides – The Strood can actually get covered by the tide, meaning access both to and from the island is restricted.

This is why it’s crucial you always check the tide timetables before you make your journey to Mersea!

A good measure, in addition to doing this, is learn if the tide is at 4.5m or higher that day – if so it will probably cover The Strood.

In this case, you need to leave 1.5 hours either side of high tide to travel onto or off the island.

Cars do regularly have to be rescued, so please pay attention to this!

How to Get There?

England, Essex, Colchester

Taking under 2 hours by car to reach the island, the most common route to Mersea Island from London is to follow the A12 past Chelmsford, then exit at junction 26 and head along the B1025 past Tiptree.

This is a beautiful little drive – once you turn off the highway – as you pass through the gorgeous Essex countryside and some lovely quaint villages.

Driving really is the best and easiest way to get to Mersea Island, as it will offer you the most flexibility, especially if you want to explore other parts of the county at the same time.

If you don’t have your own vehicle, then check out Discover Cars who offer a great range of rental vehicle at some great prices.

Alternatively, if you can’t or don’t want to drive, then you can get to Mersea Island using public transport and taxi or bus.

Trains to Colchester leave from London Liverpool Street and the taxi ride from the Colchester station to Mersea Island takes around 20 minutes.

As always, I use Trainline to search and book trains across the UK, as they offer great comparison options and some of the best rates around.

From Colchester, the quickest way to the island is to pay for a short taxi ride which costs about £15-20.

Otherwise, it is a lot cheaper to get a train from Liverpool Street to Colchester Town, which is about a 100m walk from Colchester bus station.

From here there are hourly buses (even on Sundays), which take an hour to reach Mersea Island.

Tickets cost £2-3, but on high tides, the buses only run as far as Peldon, so do check timetables here .

When to Visit & How Long For?

England, Essex, East Mersea

There’s no question the best time of year to visit Mersea Island is during the summer months of May through September.

This is when the UK has its best weather and you’re able to enjoy the stunning coastline here to the max.

If it’s the beach you’re after when you come to Mersea – and why wouldn’t you be?! – then it’s definitely the warmer and drier months of the year that you want to be here!

It goes without saying these are also the busiest times of the year, especially the weekends and school holidays, so if you’re trying to balance the good weather with less people, opt for week-day stays that are outside the peak school holidays.

And when it comes to how long to spend on Mersea Island – a day trip is certainly better than nothing and will give you a great city escape.

However if you can spend more time than a couple of nights away from home, then Mersea will make for a great relaxing break.

Or you can create your own Essex explorer weekend with 1 night on Mersea Island and another elsewhere in the county to make a good getaway of it.

A family business, they offer personal boat tours around the harbour of the island to 1 hour creek tours (with the chance to see seals!) and even 3 hour return pub lunch tours.

An independent museum established in 1976, they’re open 2pm  -5pm in the summer months (1st May to 29th Sept) and adults entrance costs £2. Children are free.

This place is well worth a visit, along with the cute local church that sits next to it!

There’s also a kids play area here, bird hide and beach access.

The park is open every day from 8am to dusk and parking fees apply. Learn more here .

And, in between, as you make your way from West to East, or visa versa, don’t miss a stop at the Mersea Vineyards , where 4 grapes create lovely English wines for you to sample and enjoy!

They also have an onsite brewery, cafe and small guesthouse.

Mersea Island Beach

England, Essex, Shells

And of course, who could forget one of the best things to do on Mersea Island is hit the beach!

The main beach in Mersea Island is situated near West Mersea, which is the main town area too.

Victoria Esplanade runs the length of the coast here and begins from the West Mersea Marina before covering West Mersea Beach, Seaview and along to Waldegraves Holiday Park.

This is the sandiest prettiest stretch of the coast on the island and is the spot to snap the coloured beach houses, which are the most famous icons of the island.

If you want your Instagram shots, this is where to head!

Keep walking past the row of coloured beach huts, to the end of the bay, if you want the quietest spots – here a short path can take you to the top of a small lookout area too.

5 Packing Essentials for Mersea Island

#1 Walking Shoes – You can’t come to Mersea and not enjoy some walks along the island for gulps of bracing sea air. So walking shoes are a must have! I highly recommend these lightweight and comfortable ones from North Face , which are perfect for the job.

#2 Waterproof, Windproof Jacket – Look, as paradisicial as I’ve made Mersea sound (and it is), it also is Essex! As such, you should be prepared for rain at any time of the year. So bring a good waterproof and windproof jacket no matter when you’re visiting.

#3 Swimwear & Towel – You can’t come to the wonderful coastline of Mersea and not bring swimwear. Swimwear and a sand-free beach towel !

#4 Camera – Having an excellent camera to snap Mersea Island in all her glory and preserve the memories is an absolute given if you’re travelling done this way. I love my Sony A6000 , which never leaves my side on travel adventures. I also enjoyed having a GoPro when I was here to capture all the water action.

#5 Portable Charger – There’s no denying, power can be an issue down in Mersea, especially if you’re camping. Even if you have a powered site, remembering to charge stuff up, leaving it out overnight, or during the day, and constantly rotating electronics can be tiresome. My solution: Come armed with 2 fully charged Anker portable chargers , so you can fire up your phone, camera or other devices whenever and wherever you need.

An excellent article highlighting the best of Mersea!

My experience of living nearby is that the Strood generally covers over 5m, not 4.5m, but this does generally happen more than once a month, and all year round, not just spring.

While on Mersea, you also have to paddle board. Tollesbury, the location of the HIKS paddleboard factory, is close by, and due to the island having very low waves on account of being in the Blackwater Estuary, it is the perfect place to learn (I did).

Ensure to book at the Company Shed, as they only do bookings. It’s worth it though!

Thank you so much for the wonderfully helpful, local knowledge! Can’t wait to return to your home island soon! Thanks and best wishes, Steph 🙂

Middle and High School Field Trip Ideas

Middle school students on a field trip to a water reclamation facility

@salinasvalleybasingsa

For this age group, you’ll need to step up your game a bit. (They’ve probably already been to the zoo, the aquarium, and the art museum.) Try some of these locations, which offer educational, social-emotional, and real-life learning opportunities.

  • Food bank: Hold a food drive, then arrange a trip to your local soup kitchen or food pantry. Volunteering makes for truly meaningful field trips.
  • Recycling facility: In a time when reducing landfill waste is more important than ever, a trip to a recycling facility can help drive home the message.
  • Theater: Many theaters offer behind-the-scenes tours for schools and discount pricing when you buy tickets in bulk. (Want to go virtual? Check out the Hamilton Education Program !)
  • Community college: Parents sometimes take kids on college visits, but a community college trip offers opportunities for even more students to see themselves getting a higher education.
  • TV station: Kids interested in communications or technology will find this completely fascinating.
  • Courtroom: There’s no better way to understand the justice system than to see it in action.
  • State or county capitol: Every government class should visit a local capitol to meet with officials and see how the government works.
  • Local business: This can be a cool way to learn about managing a business, working with customers, or discovering how products are made.
  • Wildlife rehab facility: Introduce students to the people who help injured wild animals recover and live free once again.
