Description.

Chester Medieval Tours provide hugely entertaining and historically accurate city tours of Chester from a Medieval perspective with a focus on medieval Chester in the year 1403.

Authentically dressed medieval soldiers will lead you around Chester highlighting significant events of the time when England was under the rule of King Henry IV but the rebellion of Henry ‘Hotspur’ Percy, his allies Owain Glyndwr and the Earl of Douglas, threatened his reign. You will learn of the reasons that lead to Hotspur rebelling against the King and about what life was like for the soldiers living in the city, particularly the famous and skilled, Cheshire longbowmen who were the former bodyguards to the crown.

Your medieval soldier will guide you around Chester to the following sights; Chester walls, Chester’s famous medieval rows, the Roman amphitheatre (you will be surprised what it was used for in the medieval period), Chester’s first Cathedral St. John’s. The River Dee looking over to Handbridge is where your tour will end and where your guide will recall the dramatic conclusion to the rebellion at the battle of Shrewsbury and the fate of the people of Chester.

Chester Medieval public tours run at 3 pm Monday to Friday and 1 pm on Saturdays (from 27 February) starting at the Tourist information office by the Town Hall.

Roman Tours and Chester Medieval Tours working with HAZ (Heritage Action Zone) are providing a Medieval character to patrol the Chester streets and Rows to promote the famous Chester Rows. Visitors are given an insight to Chester's great history and it's a great photo opportunity too! Visitors are encouraged to use the #medievalmeetandgreet when they share images of Chester.

The team also run Roman Tours ,   Virtual Tours and Educational Tours in Collaboration with Grosvenor Museum and Educational Outreach.

A guided walking tour to discover several sites of significance to medieval Chester

On this walking tour, you’ll have the opportunity to discover several important medieval sites of Chester. These include the Chester city walls, the Chester Rows and St John the Baptist's Church.

You’ll be led by two guides dressed in period clothing – one as a Cheshire archer and the other as famed English knight Hotspur. Together, they’ll give you an insight into what life was like in medieval Chester.

Chester County Announces 2024 Town Tours & Village Walks with Celebratory Kick-Off Event

WEST CHESTER, PA — Chester County Commissioners Josh Maxwell, Marian Moskowitz, and Eric Roe have unveiled the details for the 2024 Town Tours & Village Walks program. The series will commence at the Chester County History Center in West Chester on Thursday evening, June 6.

Marking its 30th year, the Chester County Town Tours & Village Walks program remains a popular event, drawing residents and visitors alike. This free series showcases Chester County’s rich cultural heritage through engaging lectures and evening strolls. The program consists of nine different events held weekly in various communities throughout the county, running until August 15.

The kick-off event on June 6 will not only launch the 2024 program but also celebrate West Chester Borough’s 225th anniversary. The event will highlight its transformation from a Quaker village to the vibrant community it is today. Registration begins at 5:00 p.m., with the program starting at 5:30 p.m., followed by walking tours.

The additional programs are scheduled as follows:

• June 13: Coventryville in South Coventry Township
• June 20: Main Street at Exton, West Whiteland Township
• June 27: Upland Farm, Upper Uwchlan Township
• July 11: Highland Orchards, West Bradford Township
• July 18: White Horse Village, East Whiteland Township
• July 25: Baird House, Uwchlan Township
• August 1: Baptist Church in the Great Valley, Tredyffrin Township
• August 8: Coventry Woods, North Coventry Township
• August 15: Yellow Springs, West Pikeland Township

All events are free and open to the public. Each tour begins at 5:30 p.m. and lasts around 50 minutes, with the last tour departing at 7:00 p.m. Preregistration is not required; attendees can sign up onsite at the advertised starting point of each tour.

The Town Tours & Village Walks program is a collaborative effort made possible by the Chester County Board of Commissioners, the Chester County Planning Commission, the Chester County History Center, the Chester County Historic Preservation Network, Chester County Tourism, and numerous dedicated volunteers.
