There is one major problem for wheelchair users that many people don’t realize until they already have a chair. Transporting it!

Some wheelchairs are heavy. This makes them difficult to lift and load. Especially for users with older caregivers or spouses who are responsible for that duty. Others are too big or bulky to fit into the trunk of an average sedan or small car.

Anyone who needs a wheelchair at home is going to need one while traveling or on vacation, right? Some people can walk fine at home but need a portable wheelchair for longer distances.

The best wheelchairs for travel are small and lightweight so they are easy to load, lift, and manage as you go about your journey. Plus, they should be durable enough to withstand the abuse of constant folding, unfolding, and stowing.

So, in this guide, I’m going to show you what your travel wheelchair options are and teach you what to look for. Plus, as a custom wheelchair specialist at a home medical equipment company, I am going to share some of my favorites with you.

Types of Wheelchairs

You can find several different types of wheelchairs for travel, be it for yourself or someone you love. The two prominent categories are electric/powered and manual. My reviews later on cover good choices for both.

Manual wheelchairs either get self-propelled by the user or are just pushed by someone accompanying the rider (aka a transport wheelchair).

They’re pretty simple to use, and they’re very similar to the wheelchairs you can borrow at many places. Manual travel wheelchairs often mean keeping a smaller profile and easier transportation during a trip.

Powered wheelchairs have electric batteries so they can run on their own if they have a sufficient charge. They can also be self-powered by the user if they need or want to.

Power Chairs vs Manual Wheelchairs: The Pros and Cons

In deciding between lightweight power and manual chair options, you need to weigh the benefits and drawbacks of each one.

Not all wheelchairs are the same, so it can be hard to know what to look for in a good travel wheelchair. Here is a checklist you can use to “roll your way” through the analysis.

• Lightweight : Travel wheelchairs have to be light enough that they can be easily moved in and out of cars, buses, and other modes of transportation all throughout your trip. Make sure you choose a lightweight wheelchair that folds quickly and easily.
• Durability : Users love travel wheelchairs for their weight, function, and size. However, you need to be sure that any travel wheelchair you get is sturdy enough while you’re on the road.
• Simplicity : Travel wheelchairs need to be simple to set up, collapse, and generally use while you’re out and about. Test your wheelchair for this before your trip, and hopefully while you’re still in a money-back guarantee or return period.
• Comfort : If you or someone you love is going to be using a travel wheelchair every single day of a trip, then they need to be comfortable while in it. Otherwise, the vacation can quickly be ruined. Seating is paramount here, especially in regard to width, depth, and back support.

• Leg Rests : These are also supposed to provide comfort and support to the user. The primary thing to look for is leg rests that can swing away or be adjusted since this influences the transferability of that wheelchair.

I am including this at the top of my list of travel wheelchairs because it is the lightest and easiest-to-transport standard wheelchair you will find.

The total weight of the chair is 19 lbs if you leave the rear wheels on. But, if you pop them off with the quick-release button, the weight goes down to 13.5 lbs. Nearly anyone can handle loading that weight into the trunk of the car.

It also folds down into a very small, easy-to-lift package that is only 28″ x 26″ x 6″. So, it’s going to fit in even the smallest vehicles. You can even get an optional carry bag to make transportation even easier.

But, there are other things to love about this chair too. First, you get a seat and back cushion that are an upgrade over standard wheelchair upholstery. Second, the wheel locks are more robust than many of the Featherweight wheelchair’s competitors.

Finally, there are hand brakes on the back of the chair for the caregiver to use.

For seniors who don’t push themselves in their wheelchairs and have caregivers, I really like this transport chair from Medline.

It is a really good choice too for someone who needs a comfortable lightweight wheelchair for narrow doorways . Safety is also a top priority, given the loop-lock handbrakes and attached seat belt.

The handbrakes on the back are easier for caregivers to operate and keep the chair in control at all times. The larger wheels on the back give a smoother ride over obstacles or rougher surfaces.

The seat is made of nylon and is breathable, comfortable, and cleans with a quick wipe down. Plus, you can adjust the footrest as well.

Sturdy aluminum framing comes in red or blue. In either color, it has a powder coating to prevent rust and other deterioration.

The problem with heavy-duty wheelchairs is that they are often heavy. This is because extra parts are required for them to support extra weight. The added weight can make them difficult to travel with.

But, the Graham Field (E&J) bariatric transport chair is lightweight and durable too. It is designed to support larger people with a 24″ wide seat and a 400 lb weight capacity. And, the total weight of the chair is just 31 lbs. That’s a weight most people can handle.

One potential drawback to watch for is that the overall width of this chair is 30.25 inches. So, it may not maneuver well in smaller homes. But, if you just use it out in the community it will work just fine. The frame folds easily and fits into most vehicle trunks

If you prefer or need a power chair but think portability is a problem, take a look at the Featherweight Power Chair.

It weighs only 33 lbs and folds into one piece making it extremely easy to transport! Most portable power chairs and scooters have to be disassembled into multiple pieces.

Then, you have to reassemble them when you get to your destination. But, the Featherweight Power Chair stays in one piece. It is even airline-approved.

It has the usual power wheelchair features too: it is joystick-operated and battery-powered. The top speed is 5 mph and it will go about 11 miles between charges. So, it’s powerful enough for a day of shopping.

Because of the limited seat width of 18″ and a weight capacity of 250 lbs, it isn’t going to fit everyone though. The smaller wheels will give a bit of a bumpy ride if you are off the beaten path.

But if a truly portable power wheelchair is what you need, here it is !

Pride has made the portable Go Chair power wheelchair for many years now and it has a great track record of reliability and durability.

The chair is portable but it is a bit of a process. The total chair weight is 128 pounds but it disassembles into 4 smaller pieces with the heaviest piece weighing 36 lbs.

Using Pride’s feather-touch disassemble process, you lift the seat off the base, then remove the battery compartment, and finally separate the base into 2 parts.

The process isn’t difficult but not everyone is going to be able to do it. See the video below for a demonstration of this.

The seat and armrests are comfortable enough for long days on the road. But, the speed is slower than some other portable power chairs at 3.7 mph (walking speed is 3 mph fyi) and the range is a bit smaller too – 8.7 miles between charges.

If you will be using it inside your home, it should fit through most doorways fine. The total overall width is only 22.5 inches. Not bad for a lightweight portable power chair !

These aren’t CPAP machines. You can buy one without a prescription. However, it’s a good idea to go through your doctor. He or she can help you select a great model suited well for your current condition and circumstances.

Also, if you can get a qualification or a prescription, you might be eligible for certain medical programs or insurance coverage that pays for some or all of your wheelchairs, although just paying full price on the general retail market is always a possibility.

How long do wheelchairs last?

A typical lifespan for most wheelchairs is 2 to 3 years. Manual wheelchairs might last up to 5 years since they don’t have batteries and motors.

Just keep in mind that the more mileage/use a wheelchair gets, the sooner it will wear out. If you get a travel wheelchair that you only use when on the road, and don’t use at home, it can certainly last longer than these estimates.

How long do wheelchair batteries last?

Most wheelchair batteries, when in new condition and fully powered, should last more than 8 hours, giving the user 10 to 20 miles of coverage.

Battery use over time will make the condition decline, so the charge duration and range will reduce.

Many manufacturers suggest replacing power wheelchair batteries every 18 months, although depending on usage, you might do it as quickly as 6 months or as slowly as 2 years.

Folding Aluminum Manual Wheelchair

Indexing Center-of-Gravity Adjustments

Ensured center of gravity (CoG) was set evenly on both sides of the chair, which improves tracking and ease of use. Most manual folding wheelchairs on the market now have some sort of CoG indexing.

6" Caster Wheels

6" casters are a nice mid-range caster size that works equally well indoors and out. Previously only small indoor-specific or large outdoor casters were available. Now all wheelchair manufacturers offer a 6" caster as one of their most popular options.

Redesigned Mag Wheels

The Mag wheel is a great choice because it requires no maintenance and is very durable. Before the introduction of the 6-spoke mag, mag wheels were heavy and medical-looking. The 6-spoke took a lot of weight out and improved the aesthetics, which in turn improved the overall chair aesthetics. Since this development, wheel manufacturers have continued to improve the aesthetics and weight, but Quickie was the first to say function doesn't have to be ugly.

Articulating Leg Rest (ALR)

Prior to the ALR, the only angle-adjustable footrest options were extending/elevating leg rests (ELR). The main advantage of the ALR over the ELR is that it grows (articulates) in length as the foot/leg is raised. This articulation mimics the kinematics of the knee, allowing the legs to be raised without repositioning the end user. Most high-end wheelchair manufacturers now have some version of this technology.

Depth-Adjustable Back

Allows for the use of thicker seating/back supports without sacrificing seat depth. Also allows for better center of gravity alignment with the thicker back supports.

Kolorfusion

Opened the aesthetic options on chair beyond one color paint. Camo, Stars & Stripes, Zebra, etc. Allows the end user to further personalize their chair to meet their lifestyle.

Curved Rear Side Frame

Improved aesthetics without sacrificing functionality.

Single Shaft One-Arm Drive

Reduced weight and improved folding functionality. Previous one-arm drive designs were heavy and difficult to use due to a complex scissor-like mechanism and too much movement of the internal parts.

Frequently Asked Questions

The Quickie 2 is only available in a swing-away frame style, the axle plates mount horizontally, and it has a depth-adjustable rear side frame. While the Q2 Lite is available in both swing-away and fixed front frame styles, the axle plates mount vertically and it is designed with a shorter frame height. These design differences mean a lighter frame.

The only struggle I had with this chair was getting it cleaned. Getting stains out of the upholstery is pretty hard. You’ll need to be ready to do some serious scrubbing.

The carbon frame on this wheelchair gives it superb durability , and you don’t have to worry about replacing it anytime soon. You can expect a smooth ride all the time. I do wish that this bariatric wheelchair came with simple safety features like belts and hand brakes. By now, that should be a standard for the different types of wheelchairs offered.

Sitting on wheelchairs can cause serious back aches , making it uncomfortable for some patients to sit in them for hours. They shift around their seats, hoping to find the best position. 

Thankfully, this will be the least of your problems when you use the Strongback Excursion mobility wheelchair. The back part of the chair is adjustable so that you can find a comfortable position for you.

However, I do hope this wheelchair can be improved and become more durable. I noticed some of the parts falling off, like the wheel caps and even sometimes the leg rest.

But with rear wheels on, the whole wheelchair weighs just 19 pounds, making it one of the most ultra-lightweight wheelchairs on the market. 

The featherweight wheelchair comes highly recommended thanks to its sleek and light design. The chair folds easily so that you can keep this in your storage or your car’s trunk. 

Overall, nothing much can be said about this product, except that it can potentially be one of the lightest wheelchairs on the market. Its plain design could certainly be improved, but this is just a matter of aesthetics.

This wouldn’t have been possible without its durable carbon steel body. It may be one of the lightest wheelchairs you can find, but it certainly is one of the strongest. 

Unfortunately, this chair doesn’t sport the usual large wheels. This being the case, you need to rely on other people to wheel you from one place to another.

One noticeable difference I experienced while using some of the best ultra-lightweight wheelchairs is their maneuverability. 

Regardless of what direction and how many turns I made, everything was effortless! Not to mention, I didn’t have to worry about any nasty hand strains. 

Although you’re operating a super lightweight wheelchair, they’re still made of durable materials to ensure you get the most out of your investment.

You can transport lightweight wheelchairs anywhere and easily load them inside your car!  That’s because, unlike the average manual wheelchairs, the light weight makes them highly portable . 

Most lightweight wheelchairs are typically foldable, so you can save a ton of space wherever you put them. Having quick-release wheels also lets you store your chair away without the bulk!

But make no mistake in thinking that ultra-lightweight wheelchairs can’t hold you. You’d be surprised that even bariatric users can enjoy this lightweight design!

I’m not going to lie, I found it extremely challenging to develop a list of some of the best lightweight wheelchairs. There are many products to choose from, and it’s as if I was looking for a needle in a haystack.

To ensure you don’t have the same experience, I listed some of the important factors you should prioritize in your search for the best lightweight chair:

Wheelchairs come in different price points, regardless of the type. This being the case, you’ll always find a wheelchair regardless of your budget. 

A good rule of thumb I follow is to always set a budget before making any big purchase. This helps me narrow down my search and stay within budget. 

If you’re working with a limited budget, ensure you’re not sacrificing the quality for its price . After all, you still want to get your money’s worth at the end of the day. 

But if you’ve got a few extra bucks you’re willing to spend, consider investing in some of the higher-end lightweight wheelchairs.

2. Weight Capacity

Always take into account the weight limit of your wheelchair. The higher the limit, the better!

In general, the average weight limit of standard wheelchairs is 200 to 300 pounds. 

This is pretty sufficient, even for some bariatric patients. You don’t have to worry about buying separate wheelchairs to meet different weight requirements. 

Keep in mind that wheelchair weight is different from weight limits . The former refers to the overall weight of just the wheelchair itself, and the latter refers to how much load it can handle. 

3. Maneuverability

The main purpose of having a manual wheelchair is to travel from point A to B with the least struggle possible. Part of this is being able to make turns, regardless of the angle. 

I encountered several wheelchairs out there that I found to be frustrating. I couldn’t make a complete 360 turn because of one reason or another. 

Out of frustration, I swore I’d only choose a manual wheelchair I could turn in one swift move. This is a good rule you, too, should follow. 

You might also want to consider a wheelchair’s width — especially if you’re going through a lot of doorways or narrow paths.

The last thing you’d want to struggle with is mobility, which is what your wheelchair is supposed to help you with. 

4. Safety Features

A simple set of safety features can support users in their day-to-day activities.

Take the case of a simple safety belt, which ensures no elderly will fall off their seat while in transit! Or wheel brakes, for example, which ensures that the users don’t accidentally roll down an incline.

Here are some of the common features you should watch out for:

• Anti-tip bars
• Brake lever extensions
• Swing-away footrests

Believe it or not, I sat on the wheelchairs I reviewed to test how comfortable they were for long use. I found many products I felt comfortable in and others that didn’t meet my expectations.

Based on my test, I found cushioned wheelchairs to be the best. Not only does it cushion my back and bottom, but it also lessens the strain I feel when sitting down.

I also love how some wheelchairs use nylon upholstery, which keeps me cool even after a long time. Thanks to the breathable fabric of nylon upholstery, I can stay seated without breaking a sweat.

Apart from that, I also make sure to choose a wide seat so I don’t feel cramped in my seat.

6. Frame Material

If you want your wheelchair to last a long time, you must find the right material.

In general, I find stainless steel and aluminum to be durable and long-lasting . Not just that, but these two types of materials don’t weigh a lot!

New wheelchairs designed today are usually made with carbon fiber , which provides just the same durability. They are better than steel and aluminum, although they have a pretty expensive price tag.

Thus, before making that big purchase, check what material the wheelchair is made of. I’m sure you don’t want to suddenly fall off your chair because of your poor-quality frames.

7. Adjustability

I always recommend getting an adjustable wheelchair because it provides more product versatility.

Just think about it, you can get two people to use a single wheelchair if the seats and footrests are adjustable.

In general, if there’s one adjustable feature, you should always check out its height. Ideally, the wheelchair user should be able to pull it up and down when necessary.

Types of Lightweight Wheelchairs

There are various types of lightweight wheelchairs in the market — what should you choose? Should you stick to the conventional manual wheelchair, or is it time to level up to an electric-powered chair?

1. Standard & Manual Lightweight Wheelchairs

As its name suggests, a manual wheelchair is the most basic type of chair you can get today. It doesn’t come with any advanced features, unlike the new and modern wheelchairs.

Notwithstanding this, I always find a manual wheelchair the most reliable. It offers a no-frills and thrills operation, which I want.

Today, even manual wheelchairs have their variations, like in the case of transport wheelchairs. They’re just like the usual manual wheelchair, but a transport chair is comparably lighter.

Another good example is a bariatric wheelchair, which tends to have a larger seat width and high weight capacity.

2. Power Wheelchairs

If you’re looking for a new wheelchair design, consider powered wheelchairs. As its name suggests, powered chairs are battery-operated .

One of the main reasons I would get a power wheelchair is it can travel long distances without straining yourself . All you have to do is use the controls, and you’re all set!

I find power chairs to be one of the best wheelchairs for people with poor arm strength. It helps them overcome their mobility concerns and helps them regain their independence.

However, I did notice that this type of wheelchair makes a humming sound during operation. Fortunately, it doesn’t bother me too much.

3. Specialty Wheelchairs

If there’s a specific concern you want to address, your best bet is to use a specialty wheelchair.

If you’re fond of the outdoors, I suggest you check out outdoor-type wheelchairs. This type of wheelchair usually sports thicker wheels to traverse an unpaved road. Both the user and caregiver can travel comfortably!

Meanwhile, if you love playing basketball or tennis, there are also wheelchairs configured for that purpose. The wheels tend to be wider and tilted, ensuring you don’t fall over during a heated match.

4. Transport Chairs

Transport chairs are one of my favorites to bring, especially for an outing! They’re portable and lightweight and easily fit in my car’s trunk!

One thing I did notice with transport chairs is their wheels are smaller than your standard chairs. They usually sport four small wheels, which can turn in different directions.

Unfortunately, you’ll need someone to wheel you around when using transport wheelchairs since they don’t have the usual two large rear wheels.
