Illumination de la Tour Eiffel au nom de la marque

Que la lumière soit ! En cette année 1925, le nom de Citroën est partout, y compris sur la Tour Eiffel. Le maître du Quai de Javel, avec tout le génie commercial qui le caractérise accepte la proposition d’un fabricant d’enseignes lumineuses, Jacopozzi, pour que le nom de Citroën brille de mille feux dans le ciel de Paris. Le 4 juillet 1925, la veille de l’ouverture de l’Exposition Internationale des Arts Décoratifs, la plus célèbre tour du monde s’embrase.

On connaît la tour Eiffel qui change de couleurs au gré des illuminations et des événements...

Hé bien, en 1925, André Citroën se fait le cadeau (2 millions et demi de francs, quand même) de faire écrire en lettres enflammées son nom sur la tour, grâce à l'ingénieur italien Jacopozzi.

Le gouvernement français le charge, pendant la Première Guerre, de reconstituer un faux Paris, afin de tromper les avions bombardiers ennemis.

Des lumières mouvantes imitaient le mouvement des trains, des voitures...

Il devient véritablement célèbre lors de l’exposition des Arts Décoratifs de 1925.

Il savait bien, pour l’avoir vu, qu’en Amérique, de formidables publicités lumineuses recouvraient toute la masse des gratte-ciel…

Jacopozzi devait faire mieux !

Une nuit, les Parisiens découvrent la tour Eiffel enguirlandée de milliers d’ampoules électriques.

Suivent l’illumination de l’Arc de Triomphe, de la place de la Concorde, de l’Opéra Garnier…

Peu avant de mourir, il étudie la possibilité d’illuminer, par l’éclairage par diffusion, toute l’avenue des Champs-Élysées.

La tour Eiffel prend feu !

Mais revenons à la tour Eiffel et Citroën !

Le 4 juillet 1925, à 22 heures, la tour prend feu.

200 000 ampoules l'ornent. Le nom de Citroën s’éclaire lettre par lettre, sur une hauteur de 300 mètres.

Le Petit Parisien de ce jour-là rapporte :

« Ce soir, pour la première fois, le nom de leur constructeur apparaîtra, en lettres géantes, sur l'armature de la tour, du sommet à la plate-forme du deuxième étage. Puis on verra, entre le premier et le second étage, les doubles chevrons dans leur écusson ovale. Une première manœuvre de commutateur fera apparaître le dessin architectural de la tour. Puis, surgira toute une constellation de petites étoiles d'or qui scintilleront. On verra poindre ensuite cinq ou six étoiles plus grosses, et qui bientôt, s'agrémenteront d'une queue de comète. Alors, surgiront des flammes mouvantes qui grimperont vers le ciel. Puis, la queue des comètes s'allongera de façon à former les sept lettres au nom de Citroën. Une flamme énorme couronnera le sommet de la tour, avant l'apparition des écussons bleus et rouges, portant d'abord, en jaune, les dates « 1889 » et 1925 » et, enfin, les doubles chevrons. Après quarante secondes d'éclairage, la tour se trouvera de nouveau dans l'obscurité et l’illumination recommencera selon le même rythme. »

Le dispositif mis en place pour ces illuminations est impressionnant :

« Un caniveau de 400 mètres a amené jusqu'à un poste de transformation construit au pied du pilier sud, le courant du secteur, à une tension de 12 000 volts. Là, une usine d'une puissance de 1 000 kilowatts ou 1 500 chevaux le transforme en courant de 220 volts et le transmet, par 32 câbles de 170 mètres, d'un poids de 15 tonnes, à la cabine de distribution, édifiée au deuxième étage de la tour. Tout un clavier de contacteurs d'interrupteurs, de commutateurs est à la disposition un l'électricien pour régler la distribution du courant aux deux cent mille lampes réparties sur 56 kilomètres de circuit. »

CITROËN INTRODUCES NEW BRAND IDENTITY AND LOGO

Citroën reveals new corporate brand identity and logo to mark next chapter in history. new logo reinterprets original 1919 oval and is 10th evolution in citroën’s 103-year history changes to debut on new concept at the end of september, before being introduced on new products and concepts from mid-2023. enhanced and updated corporate identity will increasingly roll out across digital, dealer and corporate environments..

Citroën has revealed a fresh corporate brand identity and logo, signalling the start of a bold, exciting and dynamic new era for the 103-year-old brand as it accelerates electric mobility and extends its core DNA for affordability, audacity and customer wellbeing.

The new look reinterprets the original logo first adopted by founder André Citroën, inspired by the success of his first metalworking company producing chevron-shaped ’herringbone’ gear systems. The familiar “deux chevrons” has remained at the heart of Citroën’s identity ever since.

The new emblem signposts the brand’s transition and evolution and will debut at the end of September on a significant Citroën concept. The new logo will then progressively feature on future Citroën production and concept vehicles from mid-2023.

Citroën’s Global Brand Designer Alexandre Revert says: “As we look to the future, it was logical for us to close the loop by coming back graphically to André Citroën’s first logo which represented the genuine promise of affordable and innovative mobility for all. Progressively moving to a more prominent and visible brand signature for our future designs is a significant if subtle evolution, where the precision of the technical, functional chevrons are embraced by and contrasted with the warmth and almost human softness of the oval that surrounds them.”      

Complementing the new logo is a fresh corporate brand identity programme and new brand signature – “Nothing Moves Us Like Citroën” – which will start to be used in corporate and product communications and activities. The new identity took inspiration from more intimate non-automotive brands, including cosmetics and apparel, to convey a warmer expression of the brand that is easy on the eyes when experienced in different settings.

Particular care has been given to the design to ensure the digital experience meets the expectations of new customers for ergonomics and aesthetics – including providing a ‘dark mode’ option – fully meeting the needs and requirements for online sales.

In addition, a new animatic language is under development to integrate the new identity in all digital touchpoints, both inside the vehicle through HMI screens and outside in the My Citroën App, providing customers with an enriched and coherent Citroën experience.

The new identity will also extend beyond the digital environment and use of the new logo on and in vehicles to embrace all elements of the company’s corporate identity, from merchandising and documentation to dealerships and corporate building signage.

The comfortable and familiar “La Maison Citroën” retail interior concept will also continue to be enhanced. A fresh, simplified colour palette and new lettering evolved from Citroën’s current fonts will complement the logo and further enhance the new brand identity.

Inspired by an important legacy colour for Citroën which has been used on iconic cars throughout the company’s history including the 2CV and the DS, the Monte Carlo Blue will be making a welcome return to the car portfolio soon, as well as featuring in details of the brand identity palette for corporate and retail applications. This will be joined by a more energetic and distinctive Infra-Red, replacing the currently used red to add balance and dynamic contrast in physical, print and digital applications.

Citroën CEO Vincent Cobée said: “As we embark on probably the most exciting chapter in our illustrious 103-year history, the time is right for Citroën to adopt a modern and contemporary new look. Our new identity is an elegant symbol of progress as we move our customers physically in daring, forward-looking vehicles that challenge traditional industry rules, and emotionally by ensuring their entire experience – particularly going electric – is more affordable, comfortable, and enjoyable whatever their wants and needs. 

“Our legacy of inspiring consumers with daring and revolutionary vehicles is energising us to adopt a different, more inclusive approach to future family mobility, and we firmly believe that customers past, present and future will agree that nothing moves us like Citroën.”

Origin of the Citroën logo

Why chevrons?

« André Citroën bought a patent in Poland in 1900 on a chevron-shaped gear used in milling. »

After leaving the Ecole Polytechnique, he created a business specialising in the production of these gears, which were a new technological development. It was an immediate industrial success.

The reason behind this success?

Using specific gear teeth for the herringbone gears gives a smoother, quieter and more efficient result..

Mechanical interval: a gear with helical teeth produces an axial force. However this effect is offset by adding a second helical gear in opposition and improving constant velocity joints. Innovative!

How does this relate to Citroën ?

It's a symbol of success for its founder! When André Citroën began manufacturing automobiles in 1919, he naturally chose this double chevron, which had led to his success, as his logo.

A yellow logo

The chevrons in the first Citroën logo were rendered in yellow, in a yellow oval on a blue background. Under the chevrons was the name 'A. Citroën’

From 1919 to 1959, changes in the logo led to the disappearance of the A and transformation of the oval into a blue octagon.

Between 1932 and 1935, there was a second parallel logo with a swan drifting in front of the chevrons.

« This bird was a symbol of the new floating engines and the figurehead on certain Rosalie models. »

New brand image

In 1959, Citroën redesigned the chevrons (yellow for agencies, gold for dealerships) on a white oval.

Around 1966, the oval was reintegrated, which was placed on a blue square above the Citroën name.

Chevrons through time

In 1984, the double white chevron was placed on a red square. A strong visual identity, based on the "Les chevrons sauvages" (the wild chevrons) promotional film.

Since 2009, the Citroën name has been written in red under rounded 3D-effect silver chevrons on a white background.

By embracing the roots of the brand and reinterpreting its identity, Citroën ensures that its legacy of inspiring consumers is adapting, with a different, more inclusive approach to family mobility.

2022 version is a new elegant emblem that signposts the brand’s transition and evolution towards a more responsible future.

The Parisian Icon

Symbol of modernity

The renowned French symbol might have never existed. The Eiffel tower went through few oppositions during the Universal Exposition in Paris in 1889. However, Gustave Eiffel stood tall and defended his project.Once qualified as "useless" and "monstrous" by a group of artists, Gustave Eiffel responded that the Iron Lady project was a "symbol of contemporary science build for the glory of Paris".

After two years, two months and five days of work, Eiffel finished the tower that defies the laws of physics and stands out against the strong winds. The Eiffel Tower became, in the 1920s, a symbol of modernity and technological superiority.

Cercueils déposés au pied de la tour Eiffel : gardes à vue, soupçon d’ingérence… ce que l’on sait de l’enquête

Des salariés de la Dame de fer ont fait une drôle de découverte samedi matin. Cinq cercueils étaient déposés au pied du monument. Les trois gardés à vue ont été déférés au palais de justice dimanche soir en vue d’une ouverture d’information judiciaire ce jour.

C’est une découverte pour le moins particulière qu’ont faite les salariés de la tour Eiffel (VIIe) samedi matin. Et certainement quelques touristes. Depuis les étages de la Dame de fer, certains ont remarqué la présence, au sol, au niveau du quai Jacques-Chirac qui longe le monument côté Seine, de cinq cercueils. Trois individus ont été interpellés et placés en garde à vue, dont le conducteur de la camionnette, à l’origine de cette étonnante livraison. Les trois gardés à vue ont été déférés au palais de justice dimanche soir en vue d’une ouverture d’information judiciaire ce jour, indique le parquet de Paris.

Un chauffeur bulgare « payé 40 euros » pour la livraison

« Samedi vers 9 heures, aux abords de la tour Eiffel, trois individus ont déposé sur la voie publique cinq cercueils de taille réelle recouverts d’un drapeau français, avec l’inscription soldats français de l‘Ukraine », indique cette une source policière au Parisien. Une intervention du laboratoire central et de la brigade cynophile a permis de découvrir que les cercueils contenaient des sacs de plâtre.

Selon des informations de source policière, « le chauffeur de la camionnette ayant été utilisée pour le transport a pu être interpellé aux abords grâce à un déploiement rapide des effectifs ». Il a indiqué qu’il aurait été payé 40 euros pour transporter la cargaison et les accompagnateurs. Il serait arrivé de Bulgarie la nuit précédente. Les deux autres suspects ont réussi à filer. Mais la police pense les avoir retrouvés, à la Gare routière de Bercy. La Bac du XIIe arrondissement a en effet interpellé deux hommes qui s’apprêtaient à prendre un bus pour Berlin. Selon nos informations, les trois suspects sont bulgare, ukrainien et allemand.

Manipulation étrangère ?

L’enquête a été confiée à la sûreté territoriale de Paris. Les trois suspects ont été placés en garde à vue samedi pour « violences avec préméditation », indique le parquet de Paris.

Faut-il y voir un avertissement à la France, alors que le chef de l’État n’exclut pas l’envoi de troupes en Ukraine ? À la tour Eiffel, le sujet est pris au sérieux : « C’est pour dénoncer la France qui est investie dans la guerre en Ukraine », estime un salarié. Et d’ajouter : « Ce sont les désirs de la Russie de perturber volontairement la France au travers de différentes actions. »

Le parquet de Paris n’a rien confirmé à ce stade. Mais les récentes tentatives de déstabilisation du Kremlin sont encore fraîches dans les mémoires. Début mai, trente-cinq mains rouges ont été taguées sur le Mur des Justes du Mémorial de la Shoah . Un mode opératoire déjà adopté à la Toussaint, lorsque de nombreuses étoiles de David avaient été dessinées au pochoir sur des bâtiments de Paris. Des actes alors publiquement dénoncés par le Quai d’Orsay comme une campagne d’influence russe.

Dans un message interne adressé ce dimanche aux salariés de la tour Eiffel - que Le Parisien a pu consulter -, on apprend que cet « incident » s’est produit « en bordure d’accès du monument, vers 8h45 à la sortie des SAS du pilier nord ». À peine trois minutes plus tard, « vers 8h48 », « un équipage de police a aperçu les cercueils et une opération de déminage a eu lieu vers 9h20. » Une intervention, « presque dans la minute », qu’il « faut saluer », indique la note interne. Toujours dans ce même message, il est indiqué que ce dépôt s’est fait « heureusement sans gravité », et que celui-ci « marque une nouvelle fois le caractère médiatique et résonnant des incidents en bordure ou sur la tour Eiffel ».

Deux jours après le dépôt de plusieurs cercueils au pied de la tour Eiffel, trois hommes ont été présentés lundi 3 juin à un juge d’instruction en vue de leur mise en examen. L’un d’entre eux a un lien avec le protagoniste d’une autre affaire d’ingérence étrangère, celle des « mains rouges » taguées sur le Mémorial de la Shoah.

Les trois hommes soupçonnés d’avoir déposé des cercueils samedi au pied de la tour Eiffel ont échappé lundi 3 juin à une mise en examen et demeurent libres. Selon une source policière, l’un d’eux a eu un lien avec un protagoniste d’une précédente affaire d’ingérence étrangère, celle des « mains rouges » taguées sur le Mémorial de la Shoah.

« Le juge d’instruction a placé sous le statut de témoin assisté les trois personnes qui lui ont été présentées, ne retenant pas la qualification de violences pour les faits reprochés » , a indiqué lundi soir le parquet de Paris, qui avait requis la mise en examen pour « violences avec préméditation » de ces trois suspects de nationalité étrangère.

« Ces personnes demeurent donc libres. Il appartient au juge d’instruction de décider des suites qu’il entend apporter à sa saisine » , a ajouté le parquet. Les trois hommes sont le chauffeur de véhicule ayant transporté les cercueils, de nationalité bulgare et âgé de 38 ans, et deux autres hommes, l’un âgé de 25 ans, né en Allemagne, l’autre, de 17 ans, né en Ukraine.

« Soldats français de l’Ukraine »

Vers 9 heures samedi, sur le quai Branly, ces trois personnes ont déposé « cinq cercueils de taille réelle recouverts d’un drapeau français, avec mention “soldats français de l’Ukraine” » , avait indiqué une source proche du dossier à l’AFP.

Les cercueils « contenaient du plâtre » , avait-elle ajouté. Le chauffeur de la camionnette a ensuite été « interpellé aux abords » de la tour Eiffel, selon cette source. L’exploitation de son téléphone a démontré un lien avec un homme, lui aussi de nationalité bulgare et qui avait été « identifié » par les enquêteurs dans l’affaire des tags « mains rouges » sur le Mémorial de la Shoah mi-mai, a précisé une source policière.

Deux autres personnes ont ensuite été interpellées vers 16 heures à la gare routière de Bercy, alors qu’elles s’apprêtaient à « prendre un bus pour Berlin » , selon la source proche du dossier.

Entendu, le conducteur a affirmé aux policiers ne pas connaître les deux jeunes ayant déchargé les cercueils. Il a dit les avoir rencontrés « la veille avec les cercueils et leur avait demandé de les ouvrir pour s’assurer qu’aucun corps n’était présent » , a détaillé à l’AFP une source policière. Les deux plus jeunes ont déclaré s’être « rencontrés une fois à Berlin mais être venus séparément en France » , a ajouté cette source.

Tous trois ont dit « être sans emploi et avoir besoin d’argent » , a encore dit la source policière. Le conducteur a déclaré « avoir été payé 120 € pour cette mission et les jeunes 400 € » .

Deux autres affaires d’ingérence étrangère

Les investigations ont été confiées à la sûreté territoriale de Paris. L’enquête devra établir « une éventuelle ingérence étrangère » , avait dit dimanche la source proche du dossier.

Le dépôt des cinq cercueils est « considéré comme un geste de violence psychologique, n’ayant pas causé d’incapacité de travail » , a précisé le parquet de Paris. Ce délit est passible d’une peine de trois ans d’emprisonnement et 45 000 € d’amende.

Cet incident fait écho à deux récentes affaires où existent les mêmes soupçons de manipulation étrangère. Dans la nuit du 13 au 14 mai, des mains rouges avaient été taguées sur le Mémorial de la Shoah à Paris et les policiers soupçonnent trois personnes ayant fui à l’étranger.

En octobre, après le début de la guerre Israël-Hamas, des étoiles de David avaient été taguées sur plusieurs façades d’immeubles en région parisienne. Les faits, pour lesquels un couple de Moldaves a été interpellé, ont été imputés par les autorités françaises aux services de sécurité russes (FSB).

Dans les deux cas, ce sont « des commanditaires payés pour déstabiliser et appuyer sur les clivages de la société française » , a estimé mi-mai le ministre des affaires étrangères, Stéphane Séjourné.

Origins and Construction of the Eiffel Tower

It was for the 1889 Exposition Universelle , the date that marked the 100th anniversary of the French Revolution, that a great competition was launched in 1886.

The first digging work started on the 26th January 1887 . On the 31st March 1889, the Tower had been finished in record time – 2 years, 2 months and 5 days – and was established as a veritable technical feat .

Key figures

The construction schedule, the design of the eiffel tower.

The plan to build a tower 300 metres high was conceived as part of preparations for the World's Fair of 1889 .

The wager was to " study the possibility of erecting an iron tower on the Champ-de-Mars with a square base, 125 metres across and 300 metres tall ". Selected from among 107 projects, it was that of Gustave Eiffel, an entrepreneur, Maurice Koechlin and Emile Nouguier, both engineers, and Stephen Sauvestre, an architect, that was accepted.

Emile Nouguier and Maurice Koechlin , the two chief engineers in Eiffel's company, had the idea for a very tall tower in June 1884. It was to be designed like a large pylon with four columns of lattice work girders, separated at the base and coming together at the top , and joined to each other by more metal girders at regular intervals.

The tower project was a bold extension of this principle up to a height of 300 metres - equivalent to the symbolic figure of 1000 feet . On September 18 1884 Eiffel registered a patent "for a new configuration allowing the construction of metal supports and pylons capable of exceeding a height of 300 metres".

In order to make the project more acceptable to public opinion, Nouguier and Koechlin commissioned the architect Stephen Sauvestre to work on the project's appearance.

A quite different first edition

Sauvestre proposed stonework pedestals to dress the legs, monumental arches to link the columns and the first level, large glass-walled halls on each level, a bulb-shaped design for the top and various other ornamental features to decorate the whole of the structure. In the end the project was simplified, but certain elements such as the large arches at the base were retained, which in part give it its very characteristic appearance.

The curvature of the uprights is mathematically determined to offer the most efficient wind resistance possible. As Eiffel himself explains: "All the cutting force of the wind passes into the interior of the leading edge uprights. Lines drawn tangential to each upright with the point of each tangent at the same height, will always intersect at a second point, which is exactly the point through which passes the flow resultant from the action of the wind on that part of the tower support situated above the two points in question. Before coming together at the high pinnacle, the uprights appear to burst out of the ground, and in a way to be shaped by the action of the wind".

The construction

The assembly of the supports began on July 1, 1887 and was completed twenty-two months later.

All the elements were prepared in Eiffel’s factory located at Levallois-Perret on the outskirts of Paris. Each of the 18,000 pieces used to construct the Tower were specifically designed and calculated, traced out to an accuracy of a tenth of a millimetre and then put together forming new pieces around five metres each. A team of constructors, who had worked on the great metal viaduct projects, were responsible for the 150 to 300 workers on site assembling this gigantic erector set.

The rivet workers

All the metal pieces of the tower are held together by rivets, a well-refined method of construction at the time the Tower was constructed. First the pieces were assembled in the factory using bolts , later to be replaced one by one with thermally assembled rivets, which contracted during cooling thus ensuring a very tight fit. A team of four men was needed for each rivet assembled: one to heat it up, another to hold it in place, a third to shape the head and a fourth to beat it with a sledgehammer. Only a third of the 2,500,000 rivets used in the construction of the Tower were inserted directly on site.

The uprights rest on concrete foundations installed a few metres below ground-level on top of a layer of compacted gravel. Each corner edge rests on its own supporting block, applying to it a pressure of 3 to 4 kilograms per square centimetre , and each block is joined to the others by walls.

On the Seine side of the construction, the builders used watertight metal caissons and injected compressed air , so that they were able to work below the level of the water.

The tower was assembled using wooden scaffolding and small steam cranes mounted onto the tower itself.

The assembly of the first level was achieved by the use of twelve temporary wooden scaffolds, 30 metres high, and four larger scaffolds of 40 metres each.

"Sand boxes" and hydraulic jacks - replaced after use by permanent wedges - allowed the metal girders to be positioned to an accuracy of one millimetre.

On December 7, 1887 , the joining of the major girders up to the first level was completed. The pieces were hauled up by steam cranes, which themselves climbed up the Tower as they went along using the runners to be used for the Tower's lifts.

months to build the foundations

It only took five months to build the foundations and twenty-one to finish assembling the metal pieces of the Tower.

Considering the rudimentary means available at that period, this could be considered record speed. The assembly of the Tower was a marvel of precision , as all chroniclers of the period agree. The construction work began in January 1887 and was finished on March 31, 1889 . On the narrow platform at the top, Eiffel received his decoration from the Legion of Honour.

"A thick cloud of tar and coal smoke seized the throat , and we were deafened by the din of metal screaming beneath the hammer. Over there they were still working on the bolts: workmen with their iron bludgeons, perched on a ledge just a few centimetres wide, took turns at striking the bolts (these in fact were the rivets). One could have taken them for blacksmiths contentedly beating out a rhythm on an anvil in some village forge, except that these smiths were not striking up and down vertically, but horizontally, and as with each blow came a shower of sparks , these black figures, appearing larger than life against the background of the open sky, looked as if they were reaping lightning bolts in the clouds. "

Debate and controversy surrounding the Eiffel Tower

Even before the end of its construction, the Tower was already at the heart of much debate. Enveloped in criticism from the biggest names in the world of Art and Literature, the Tower managed to stand its ground and achieve the success it deserved.

Various pamphlets and articles were published throughout the year of 1886, le 14 février 1887, la protestation des Artistes.

The "Protest against the Tower of Monsieur Eiffel", published in the newspaper Le Temps , is addressed to the World's Fair's director of works, Monsieur Alphand. It is signed by several big names from the world of literature and the arts : Charles Gounod, Guy de Maupassant, Alexandre Dumas junior, François Coppée, Leconte de Lisle, Sully Prudhomme, William Bouguereau, Ernest Meissonier, Victorien Sardou, Charles Garnier and others to whom posterity has been less kind.

Other satirists pushed the violent diatribe even further, hurling insults like : "this truly tragic street lamp" (Léon Bloy), "this belfry skeleton" (Paul Verlaine), "this mast of iron gymnasium apparatus, incomplete, confused and deformed" (François Coppée), "this high and skinny pyramid of iron ladders, this giant ungainly skeleton upon a base that looks built to carry a colossal monument of Cyclops, but which just peters out into a ridiculous thin shape like a factory chimney" (Maupassant), "a half-built factory pipe, a carcass waiting to be fleshed out with freestone or brick, a funnel-shaped grill, a hole-riddled suppository" (Joris-Karl Huysmans).

Once the Tower was finished the criticism burnt itself out in the presence of the completed masterpiece, and in the light of the enormous popular success with which it was greeted. It received two million visitors during the World's Fair of 1889.

" We come, we writers, painters, sculptors, architects, lovers of the beauty of Paris which was until now intact, to protest with all our strength and all our indignation, in the name of the underestimated taste of the French, in the name of French art and history under threat, against the erection in the very heart of our capital, of the useless and monstrous Eiffel Tower which popular ill-feeling, so often an arbiter of good sense and justice, has already christened the Tower of Babel. (...)

Is the City of Paris any longer to associate itself with the baroque and mercantile fancies of a builder of machines, thereby making itself irreparably ugly and bringing dishonour ? (...). To comprehend what we are arguing one only needs to imagine for a moment a tower of ridiculous vertiginous height dominating Paris,just like a gigantic black factory chimney, its barbarous mass overwhelming and humiliating all our monuments and belittling our works of architecture, which will just disappear before this stupefying folly.

And for twenty years we shall see spreading across the whole city, a city shimmering with the genius of so many centuries, we shall see spreading like an ink stain, the odious shadow of this odious column of bolted metal.

Gustave Eiffel’s Response

In an interview in the newspaper Le Temps of February 14 1887, Eiffel gave a reply to the artists' protest, neatly summing up his artistic doctrine:

"For my part I believe that the Tower will possess its own beauty . Are we to believe that because one is an engineer, one is not preoccupied by beauty in one's constructions, or that one does not seek to create elegance as well as solidity and durability ? Is it not true that the very conditions which give strength also conform to the hidden rules of harmony ? (...) Now to what phenomenon did I have to give primary concern in designing the Tower ? It was wind resistance.

Well then ! I hold that the curvature of the monument's four outer edges, which is as mathematical calculation dictated it should be (...) will give a great impression of strength and beauty , for it will reveal to the eyes of the observer the boldness of the design as a whole. Likewise the many empty spaces built into the very elements of construction will clearly display the constant concern not to submit any unnecessary surfaces to the violent action of hurricanes, which could threaten the stability of the edifice. Moreover there is an attraction in the colossal, and a singular delight to which ordinary theories of art are scarcely applicable ".

Coffins at the Eiffel Tower: Suspicions point to another case of Russian interference

Three men laid fake coffins at the Paris monument on Saturday. They have ties to the group who defaced the Shoah Memorial with red hands in mid-May.

Two alleged interference operations with one thing in common: The three men who deposited plaster-filled coffins near the Eiffel Tower in Paris on Saturday, June 1, were in contact with a man suspected of having been part of the group that sprayed red hands on the Wall of the Righteous at the Shoah Memorial in Paris in mid-May, according to a document from the local security directorate for the Paris agglomeration (DSPAP) obtained by Le Monde .

On Saturday morning, five coffins were discovered at the foot of the Eiffel Tower, filled with plaster and covered with a French flag bearing the words "French soldiers of Ukraine." Three men were arrested that day: first the driver of the van used to transport the coffins, who was arrested near the Paris monument, and then, in the afternoon, two other men who were preparing to take a bus to Berlin.

The driver of the van told the police that he had been paid to drop off the individuals and the cargo, and that he had arrived from Bulgaria the day before. The two other men, a Ukrainian and a German, admitted that they had been paid €400 to drop off the coffins.

Involvement in 'red hands' case

Le Monde has learned that data from the phone of one of the suspects and the statements in police custody by the three men allowed investigators to establish that they were in contact with a man already suspected of having taken part in another suspected interference operation: the graffiti defacement of red hands painted on the Wall of the Righteous at the Shoah Memorial in Paris, on the night of May 13 to 14.

The man, Georgi F., a 34-year-old Bulgarian national, is suspected of having been part of a group of three men who tagged the Holocaust monument. All three were staying at a hotel in Paris's 20 th arrondissement, on a booking made from Bulgaria. They tried to flee to Brussels as soon as the operation was over, taking a Flixbus bus.

The defacements sparked outrage and the investigation points toward a destabilization operation coordinated from abroad . While those who ordered the operation have not been identified, several clues point to Russia: A few days after the red hand tags were discovered, photos of the defacements were shared online by X accounts belonging to the technical infrastructure of Doppelgänger, a vast Russian online disinformation apparatus run by Russian marketing companies. Above all, the modus operandi of these defacements was almost a copy-paste of the stars of David case , when blue stars of David were spraypainted in several Paris neighborhoods.

Plus de deux ans de guerre en Ukraine

C'est une image qui a interpellé plus d'une personne. Samedi 1er juin vers 9 heures, sous l'œil de touristes et de Parisiens, cinq cercueils de taille réelle recouverts d'un drapeau français, avec la mention "soldats français de l'Ukraine" ont été déposés devant le monument le plus visité au monde : la tour Eiffel. À l'intérieur des bières en bois : du plâtre. 

Peu après cette étrange découverte, trois personnes ont été interpellées et placées en garde à vue pour "violence avec préméditation". TF1info revient sur le profil de ces trois suspects qui ont été déférés au palais de justice dimanche soir. Ils ont été présentés ce lundi à un juge d'instruction, a précisé le parquet de Paris à TF1/LCI. À l'issue, ils ont été placés sous le statut de témoins assistés et laissés libres.

Des repérages devant le monument

Selon une source proche du dossier, les trois suspects auraient été repérés par les forces de l'ordre dès le début de matinée samedi dernier.

À 8h30, en effet, ce jour-là, des policiers en poste devant leurs écrans de vidéosurveillance ont aperçu une camionnette Ford Transit immatriculée en Bulgarie qui ne cessait de faire des allers-retours à faible allure sur le quai Jacques Chirac, devant la tour Eiffel.

9 heures, dépose des cercueils

Peu après, le conducteur de la camionnette s'est arrêté allée Jean Paulhan, près du monument. Quelques secondes plus tard, deux individus sont descendus du fourgon et ont déchargé cinq cercueils grandeur nature et des drapeaux français du véhicule, avant de les déposer sur le trottoir, devant la tour Eiffel, où se trouvaient déjà des dizaines de touristes. 

Immédiatement, ordre a été donné aux forces de l'ordre d'interpeller l'équipe. Les trois individus ont pris la fuite à pied.

Les suspects interpellés

Le conducteur de la camionnette a été interpellé peu après au niveau du pont de l'Alma. "Dans un français approximatif" , selon une source proche du dossier, il a indiqué aux enquêteurs être arrivé la veille de Bulgarie et avoir été rémunéré pour déposer les deux hommes et leur cargaison devant la Dame de fer. Il a également assuré avoir rencontré ses deux comparses la veille des faits. "J'ai vu les cercueils... Je leur ai demandé de les ouvrir pour m'assurer qu'aucun corps n'était dedans", a-t-il expliqué. 

Une fiche des deux autres suspects a été diffusée dans le même temps et les gares routières et ferroviaires ont été prévenues que deux hommes en fuite étaient activement recherchés par les forces de l'ordre. Vers 16 heures, les deux suspects ont été localisés et interpellés à la gare routière de Bercy alors qu'ils s'apprêtaient à prendre un bus pour Berlin. 

Placés en garde à vue dans la foulée samedi, les trois suspects sont de nationalités bulgare, ukrainienne et allemande. Le chauffeur, Lazar L., est né en juin 1985 en Bulgarie. Yevhen D., né en décembre 2007, a un passeport ukrainien et réside en Allemagne. Mohamed H., lui, est né en janvier 1999 en Allemagne. Il a un passeport allemand.

Les deux hommes qui ont déposé les cercueils ont affirmé s'être rencontrés une fois à Berlin et être venus séparément en France. Tous les trois, inconnus des services de police, de la justice et des services de renseignements, ont déclaré être sans emploi et avoir besoin d'argent. C'est pour cette raison, disent-ils, qu'ils ont accepté cette mission contre rémunération : 120 euros pour le conducteur de la camionnette, 400 euros pour le duo qui a déposé les cercueils. 

Un lien avec l'affaire des "mains rouges"?

Dès la découverte des cercueils samedi, une enquête a été ouverte par le parquet de Paris et confiée à la sûreté territoriale de Paris. Il s'agissait notamment de "déterminer une éventuelle ingérence étrangère" selon une source proche de l'enquête. 

Selon nos informations, les enquêteurs de la Sûreté territoriale de Paris ont démontré, grâce à des investigations techniques, que le conducteur de la camionnette dans cette affaire des cercueils de la tour Eiffel a échangé avec l'un des protagonistes de l'affaire dite des "mains rouges".

Quelques minutes avant la dépose des cercueils en effet, des policiers de la DOPC (direction de l'ordre public et de la circulation) avaient contrôlé un homme. Ce dernier leur avait présenté un passeport bulgare au nom de Georgi F., né en juillet 1989. Lors de ce contrôle d'identité, la DGSI et les renseignements de la préfecture de police de Paris ont été prévenus, mais n'ont rien trouvé de suspect. L'homme avait donc été laissé libre.

Pourtant, ce Georgi F. est clairement identifié dans l'affaire des dégradations volontaires en réunion commises dans la nuit du 13 au 14 mai au Mémorial de la Shoah, affaire dite des "Mains rouges" , affaire dans laquelle les policiers soupçonnaient trois personnes ayant fui à l'étranger.

Outre l'affaire des mains rouges au Mémorial, cet incident fait également écho à un autre dossier avec les mêmes soupçons de manipulation étrangère : en octobre dernier en effet, après le début de la guerre Israël-Hamas, des étoiles de David avaient été taguées sur plusieurs façades d'immeubles en région parisienne. Les faits, pour lesquels un couple de Moldaves a été interpellé, ont été imputés par les autorités françaises aux services de sécurité russes (FSB).

Dans les deux cas, ce sont "des commanditaires payés pour déstabiliser et appuyer sur les clivages de la société française" , avait déclaré mi-mai le ministre des Affaires étrangères, Stéphane Séjourné.

Le parquet de Paris a requis à l'encontre des trois hommes une mise en examen du chef de "violences avec préméditation", qualification retenue pour le dépôt des cercueils couverts du drapeau français qui peut être "considéré comme un geste de violence psychologique" , selon le parquet. Un délit passible de 3 ans d'emprisonnement et 45.000 euros d'amende. 

Le juge d'instruction a finalement décidé de placer les trois hommes sous le statut de témoins assistés, ne retenant pas la qualification de violences. Ils ont été laissés libres, a indiqué le parquet lundi soir.

Les deux hommes qui ont déposé les cercueils font l'objet d'une OQTF (Obligation de quitter le territoire français) avec rétention administrative.

Millennials and Gen Zers want human connection, so they're choosing travel tours with strangers to cure their loneliness

• Intrepid Travel said young people are seeking immersive, non-traditional vacation experiences. 
• Millennials share more travel similarities with Gen Z travelers than previous generations.
• Young travelers are prioritizing interest-based travel over destination-based travel.

Young people are seeking more human connection in the post-lockdown era, so they're embracing small-group travel.

Modern technology and social media apps have created a hyper-connected world, but many millennials and Gen Zers say the focus on screens has caused an epidemic of loneliness .

While New apps and local community groups are trying to address this "social distance" problem, some young people are choosing to book their vacations with strangers to find more face-to-face camaraderie.

Intrepid Travel, which organizes small-group experiences in over 100 countries, including Morocco and Sri Lanka, says it's seen a growing interest from young people in these kinds of group tours.

"They're prioritizing travel over buying houses, mortgages, and other expenses," Matt Berna, Intrepid Travel's president of the Americas, told Business Insider.

Group travel can be hit-or-miss with people. They can conjure an image of 40-plus tourists being led off a bus to an overcrowded attraction by their shouting tour guide.

But Berna said Intrepid Travel's focus on small group experiences is the opposite. The average Intrepid Travel group has 10 people.

"It allows us to travel like locals," Berna said. "We eat in small local restaurants. We stay in family-owned hotels. We typically avoid mass market tourism, hotels, or experiences."

It also allows people to form new bonds in a tight-knit setting, which young travelers crave, after the COVID-19 pandemic.

"Camaraderie in a group is so special because you make great friendships and share laughs and stories," Berna said.

Berna said these unique experiences are popular with 18 to 29-year-olds — Intrepid Travel's core audience. Experiences are designed with young travelers in mind, offering more free time to explore on their own and more active outings.

Berna said Intrepid Travel began receiving requests from people in their 30s looking for adventures off the beaten path. Millennials traditionally valued experience-driven opportunities , and that desire hasn't waned with time.

"It became clear that millennials are aging, but the style they want to travel is immersive," Berna said. "If anything, they resonated more with Gen Z than the generations above them."

American Express Travel's 2023 Global Travel Trends Report found nearly 80% of millennials and Gen Zers respondents said they want to "partake in a day in the life of locals in the destination they are visiting," pointing toward activities like visiting local cultural sites and "hole-in-the-wall" attractions.

Airbnb, owned by millennial billionaire Brian Chesky , reported in 2020 that it also found that "immersive encounters" were becoming more popular with this generation, with interest up 102% year-to-year.

Older generations, Berna said, book vacations based on destination. Older travelers tend to plan vacations around conventional tourist spots — think the Eiffel Tower in Paris — because it's popular.

However, younger travelers don't have the same sense of FOMO — or "the fear of missing out" — that their parents do. Instead, they book vacations by interest.

At Intrepid Travel, that includes cycling enthusiasts traveling to Vietnam to peddle through the local sites. Experiences based on camping, festivals, and food are also options travelers can explore.

"They want to be a trendsetter going to the next cool place," Berna said. "It will be something new you can share with your friends, so you get the bragging rights. It's a bit more adventurous instead of following the crowd."

After conducting consumer research among its more than 300,000 travelers, Intrepid Travel formally expanded the young trip age range to 35 in February.

"Intrepid identified an opportunity to better cater for an expanded age range after experiencing a rise in inquiries from travelers in their early 30s wanting to join Intrepid's young adult trips," a press release said. "The company conducted extensive consumer research which showed that most travelers aged 18 to 35 prefer to travel with those of a similar age."

As for where travelers are going, Berna said South America has emerged as a top contender, with Peru gaining traction. The country closed its tourist attractions amid political unrest from late 2022 to early 2023, but they reopened in February 2023, according to Travel Weekly .

Another top spot is South Korea, which Berna said is typically more affordable than Japan. Intrepid Travel said they saw 172% increase globally in bookings to South Korea from 2022 to 2023.

"People want to go away and have these stories. They've settled back post-pandemic into feeling life, wanting to travel again, and seeking connection," Berna said. "Not just with other travelers in groups but with destinations."
