Expanding Teacher Education to Rural Idaho: The 2024 TRAIL Experience

June 6, 2024

ISU students Crystal Peace, Kailey Marler, Vivian Owusu, Kristi Steidley, Lori Johnson, Jenna Lamar, Megan Tooke, Hawley Hennen alongside ISU faculty Dr. Amanda Eller and Suzanne Beasterfield traveled to Arco and Mackay, Idaho to participate in this year’s TRAIL Experience.

Traveling to the world’s first city lit by atomic power, eight Idaho State University College of Education students participated in this year’s Teaching in Rural Areas Immersion Learning (TRAIL) Experience in May 2024.

TRAIL offers a hands-on understanding of teaching in a rural-remote Idaho school district through a mix of preparatory coursework, a week-long rural immersion field trip, and a final poster presentation based on an issue or insight gained while at the school.

Nestled in Idaho’s backcountry, ISU students Crystal Peace, Kailey Marler, Vivian Owusu, Kristi Steidley, Lori Johnson, Jenna Lamar, Megan Tooke, and Hawley Hennen spent four days learning, assisting, and teaching within the Butte County School District located in Arco, Idaho, in either the elementary, middle, or high school setting.

ISU teacher candidates were paired with a Butte County teacher mentor who helped them understand the difference between teaching in a rural-remote school district compared to an urban one. Candidates observed, assisted the teacher and students, and even taught some lessons.

In addition, faculty and candidates took a half-day to visit the nearby rural-remote community of Mackay, Idaho, and meet the 2024 Idaho Teacher of the Year, Trent Van Leuven. They were able to experience Mr. Van Leuven’s extensive agriculture, aquaculture, and shop programs, learning more about how students in rural-remote areas can potentially have more opportunities in some areas of education than those in urban areas.

Arco has a population of around 900 people, while Mackay has a population of 400 people. Both areas are considered rural-remote communities in Idaho. Due to isolation and many other reasons, oftentimes these communities have a harder time attracting and retaining teachers. Experiential learning programs, such as TRAIL, are critical to allowing future teachers to learn about the benefits of both teaching and living in rural areas by being immersed in the community and school. These out-of-traditional-course experiences also allowed the candidates to further expand their knowledge and skills of teaching in a variety of settings, while connecting them with mentors and fellow students within their program.

“My experience in rural school teaching has renewed my sense of purpose and solidified my commitment to being there for my students, no matter what challenges arise,” said Crystal Peace. “The close-knit community and the unique opportunities to make a meaningful impact are truly unparalleled.”

This year’s participants were grateful for the chance to enhance their teaching skills and deepen their understanding of rural education. Similar to Crystal, many teacher candidates reaffirmed their choice to become teachers and found that the benefits of teaching in rural schools include a stronger sense of community, smaller class sizes, a potential lower cost of living, and often greater access to nature and outdoor educational opportunities.

Kristi Steidley also noted about the experience, “We can read from textbooks and listen to teachers, but nothing compares to being in the classroom and engaging with the students. The atmosphere in rural schools is one of respect and support. There is a strong sense of belonging.”

Funded by a College of Education’s Dean’s Excellence Grant, TRAIL was led by ISU Teaching and Educational Studies faculty Dr. Amanda Eller and Suzanne Beasterfield. Dr. Eller and Mrs. Beasterfield wish to thank Butte County principal Allen Carter and school board member Karen Pyron, as well as Mackay principal Stephanie Fullmer and teacher Trent Van Leuven, for their help in organizing the 2024 TRAIL Experience.

CCE Announces Recipients of 2024-25 Conville Endowment Award

Thu, 06/06/2024 - 02:22pm | By: Christy Kayser

The Center for Community Engagement (CCE) at The University of Southern Mississippi has announced three recipients of the 2024-2025 Conville Endowment Award for the support of initiatives related to community engagement and service-learning.

Accessing Dance: Laura Clark Hunt, Library and Information Science and Candice Salyers, Dance

Award

Laura Clark-Hunt

Laura Clark-Hunt, assistant professor in the School of Library and Information Science, and Candice Salyers, associate professor of dance in the School of Performing and Visual Arts, were awarded as an interdisciplinary team for the creation of a digital outreach library collection enhancing the visibility of dancers with disabilities and increasing access to dance experiences for under-resourced parts of Mississippi. Through this digital collection, dance classes and performance videos by dancers with disabilities will be made available to public libraries across Mississippi.

Award

Candice Salyers

“I am delighted to be part of this project supported by the Conville Endowment which will equip public libraries to improve the quality of life for their community's most vulnerable residents,” said Clark-Hunt. “Dance-based programs can help people with disabilities – including the elderly – improve mobility and balance. Students in service-learning classes will help support the project in innovative ways that will teach critical skills.”   Aspects of the project will be incorporated into several service-learning classes in both dance and library and information science. Salyers notes that this component will allow USM students from different disciplines to contribute to and learn through the development of the project. Community collaborators for the initiative include Dark Room Ballet, disabled dance artist Bradford Chin, Move Inclusive Dance, and Laurel-Jones County Library System.

ChemDemos for K12 Students: Matthew Donahue

Award

Matthew Donahue

Matthew Donahue, associate professor of chemistry and biochemistry in the School of Mathematics and Natural Sciences, received funding to create Snatoms magnetic model kits for USM students to use during educational visits to K-12 classrooms.

“The support of the Conville Endowment Award by the CCE will allow us to sustain our STEMontheGO project that entails giving molecule building demos to K12 students in Forrest and Lamar counties. Along with the USM American Chemical Society Student Chapter members, we have initiated a project originally funded by the USM Center for STEM Education to bring a tactile learning experience into the classroom. Students learn how different elements from the periodic table bond with one another to make molecules. Each student receives a small takeaway magbag kit that allows them to continue their learning at home and on the go.”

Donahue predicts that over the course of the 2024-25 academic year USM students will conduct 30+ demonstrations and reach more than 1,000 K-12 students.

The Conville Endowment for Community Engaged Teaching and Research Award was established to honor Richard L. Conville, professor emeritus of communication studies and service-learning at The University of Southern Mississippi from 1978-2013.

The award is funded through the Richard L. Conville and Mozella P. Conville Center for Community Engagement Fund for Excellence and provides funding for conducting or developing community-engaged or service-learning research; implementing and planning a new, significant, and sustainable community engagement initiative; advancing and promoting service-learning or community engagement at USM; integrating service-learning or community engagement into a college or department degree plan; developing or re-designing a service-learning class; or collaborating across disciplines or institutions on community engagement initiatives

The Center for Community Engagement promotes service and service-learning on The University of Southern Mississippi campus and throughout the Hattiesburg community. To learn more about the CCE at Southern Miss, call 601.266.6467.

'Amazing!' 5-Star OL Lamar Brown Raves About Texas A&M Visit

Matt galatzan | jun 4, 2024.

Lamar Brown on his Texas A&M visit

  • Texas A&M Aggies

The Texas A&M Aggies have focused heavily on adding offensive line talent in the 2025 recruiting class, landing five commits thus far in the cycle.

However, they are also looking to continue that trend going forward into to the 2026 class, where five-star University Lab (Baton Rouge, LA) offensive lineman Lamar Brown has become a priority target for the Aggies.

And in an interview with On3, Brown revealed that his recent visit to College Station over the weekend made a major impression on him, and was the best experience he has had out of any of the trips he has made thus far.

“My visit was amazing,” Brown told On3's Steve Wiltfong . “I loved everything for the most part and this the best visit I ever had out of all the schools I been to.”

Brown has also visited Alabama, LSU, and Georgia, and holds offers from USC, Texas, Miami, Florida State and Ole Miss, among others.

So what sets the Aggies apart from the rest of the pack thus far? According to Brown, its because the Aggies staff and their energy has made him feel like College Station could be home.

“First foot on campus for the first time and they made it feel like I was home and that was the main thing that made it special,” Brown said. “They bring the energy I like and they are some coaches that can develop me not as only a football player but a person."

As it stands, Brown ranks as a five-star recruit, the No. 5 player in the nation, the No. 1 interior offensive lineman, and the No. 2 player in the state of Louisiana, per the On3 Industry Ranking.

He is also universally seen as the top interior lineman in the nation by all four major recruiting services.

Russia's top diplomat promises more military support for Burkina Faso as he tours West Africa

Russia’s foreign minister has pledged more support to Burkina Faso in fighting militant groups as he presses his whirlwind tour of West Africa in an attempt to fill a vacuum left by the region’s traditional Western partners

OUAGADOUGOU, Burkina Faso — Russia’s foreign minister on Wednesday pledged more support to Burkina Faso in fighting militant groups as he pressed his whirlwind tour of West Africa in an attempt to fill a vacuum left by the region’s traditional Western partners.

Sergey Lavrov spoke at a news conference in the country’s capital of Ouagadougou while on the third leg of his latest Africa trip, after Guinea and the Republic of Congo.

Russia is seeking to shore up support from the region amid Moscow’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine. A number of African countries in recent years have expressed growing frustration with their traditional Western partners such as France and the United States.

“Russian instructors have been working here and their number will increase,” Lavrov said, adding that Russia has been helping train Burkina Faso’s military and law enforcement personnel. “We have supplied and will continue to supply military equipment to help strengthen Burkina Faso’s defense capability and allow it to eliminate the remaining terrorist groups.”

Lavrov said he appreciated the “objective and fair” position of Burkina Faso on the war in Ukraine. “For our part, we are ready to provide our support for the just cause of Africans who are trying to free themselves from neo-colonial influence.”

Burkina Faso, a landlocked nation of 20 million, has been ravaged in the past eight years by violence from extremist groups loosely affiliated with al-Qaida and the Islamic State group, and from the fighting between government forces and the militants.

The country also went through two coups in just 10 months, the second last year after which a military junta threw out French forces and turned to Russia for security support. However, the junta has struggled to contain the security and humanitarian crisis.

Burkina Faso has topped the list of the world’s biggest neglected crises for the second year in a row, according to the Norwegian Refugee Council. A record 6.3 million out of 20 million people will need humanitarian assistance in 2024, the aid organization said, with many on the brink of starvation. Two million people remain internally displaced, about 60% of them children. Many have been traumatized, but resources to help them are scarce .

Jan Egeland, the agency’s secretary-general, told The Associated Press that Western governments have been withdrawing financial aid from Burkina Faso and other countries in the Sahel, a region encompassing states on the fringes of the Sahara Desert, contributing to the vicious circle of poverty, violence, and extremism.

“The disengagement of the West is bringing them no influence in the region,” Egeland said. “But I haven’t seen Russia helping us in our humanitarian work or doing development programs, so the Russian approach is not going to bring relief that the people need.”

But, he added, “I see Russian flags in Burkina Faso. I don’t see European flags.”

Later Wednesday, Lavrov arrived in Chad, which has also made the list of the world’s neglected crises.

Pronczuk reported from Dakar, Senegal.
