LAIYA BEACH BATANGAS Travel Requirements + List of Resorts

By continuing to read this article, you agree to double check with the authorities or other concerned entities for the latest updates.

When we were planning a trip to Batangas, our top choice of destination was Laiya in San Juan, Batangas. We wanted to spend a weekend at a beach resort, and Laiya has some of the most reputable, high-rated properties.

The first thing we did was contact the local government to ask about the requirements for leisure travelers. Once we had those taken care of, we then got in touch with the management of our preferred resorts. Unfortunately, due to some personal and financial reasons, we had to abandon our Laiya plans in favor of a more convenient destination — Calatagan — also in Batangas.

So no, our Laiya trip didn’t happen. But we were able to gather a lot of information during our trip planning and we didn’t want them to go to waste, so we’re sharing them with you in this article.

Just to clarify: Laiya is the name of two barangays in the San Juan, Batangas — Laiya Aplaya and Laiya Ibabao. But many resorts in other barangays (like Hugom ) have also become associated with Laiya. But they are all under the jurisdiction of the municipality of San Juan.

Without further ado, here are the travel requirements that you need to secure when planning a trip to Laiya!

WHAT'S COVERED IN THIS GUIDE?

Who are allowed to enter San Juan, Batangas?

How to Plan a Trip to Laiya in the New Normal

  • Find a registered resort. You’ll find the list of approved hotels and resorts in the above section.
  • Contact the resort management. Once you have chosen a resort, get in touch with the staff to find out about what you need to prepare beforehand. They will tell you about the updated LGU requirements as well as their additional requirements and protocol. Policies may change quickly and the resorts are usually the first to know, so it’s always best to ask them before making any move.
  • Secure all the requirements. Bear in mind that resorts may have additional reqs on top of the LGU’s.
  • Book your chosen resort. Once you have all the requirements or you’re confident that you can get them all in time, confirm your resort booking.
  • Submit the other requirements. The resort may send you a copy of the health declaration form that you need to accomplish. They may also ask for more information.
  • On the day of travel, make a stop at the Tourism Office. It’s located along Laiya Road after La Vista Subdivision in Barangay Buhay na Sapa. It’s on the right side of the road. Here, present the requirements listed above and pay the P20 ecological fee. Once done and cleared, get a Referral Slip.
  • Proceed to your booked resort. Clear the health and safety checks implemented by the resort. Upon check-in, submit the Referral Slip handed to you at the Tourism Office. Some resorts (not all) may require you to take a SAME-DAY RAPID ANTIGEN TEST, which you must also pay for.

That’s it! Enjoy your stay! Stay safe!

Day Trip in Laiya, Batangas: La Luz Beach Resort

Gretchen Gatan Lifestyle and Travel 14

While the rest of the country visited Boracay on Labor Day, my family and I went on a day trip to Laiya, Batangas in La Luz Beach Resort.

I had been planning this trip for two weeks now. I searched the Internet for the best places we could go to. Since it was just a day trip, I was looking at either Subic or Batangas. We were 12 (including the Cupcake), and all the adults didn’t want to swim and only wanted to chill. Meanwhile, my siblings, cousins, and I wanted to enjoy the beach and do some water activities. La Luz Beach Resort was perfect because it had exactly what both groups wanted.

la luz beach resort laiya batangas

Photos grabbed from La Luz Beach Resort’s  Facebook page

It was just a little hard to contact them at first. I texted all of the numbers on their website, e-mailed them, and even sent a message via their Facebook page. I was quite persistent because they don’t just allow walk-ins, so I really needed to make a reservation. After a few days, I finally got a reply from their e-mail and was given the rates for a day trip package, which included the beach entrance fee, a family cabana, a buffet lunch, and buffet merienda. It was Php 900 per person, and they required a 50% down payment to reserve our slot. Paying the down payment was easy because I only needed to go to a BPI, then e-mail them back a copy of the deposit slip, which they replied to quickly and confirmed our reservation. La Luz Beach Resort is also pet-friendly, so if you want to bring your dog, the entrance fee per dog is Php 450 .

It was decided that we would leave the house at 5am, because check-in was at 8am and check-out was at 5pm, and of course we wanted to make the most out of our trip. However, like a typical Filipino family, we left a little past 5:20am. Haha! The trip from our house in Quezon City to the resort took about four hours, considering we passed by my Ninang’s house and fetched her and my cousin in Pasig, before taking C5 going to SLEX (South Luzon Express Way). We also stopped over in Jollibee just before Candelaria in Batangas to have breakfast. There was an accident involving a truck along SLEX that morning as well, which caused major traffic and took up almost 40 minutes of our time.

With a lot of help from Google Maps and the directions on La Luz Beach Resort’s website , getting there was smooth and we didn’t get lost. From SLEX, we went straight all the way to the STAR (Southern Tagalog Arterial Road) toll way, then exited the San Jose-Ibaan Exit (way past Lipa exit). We turned left onto the San Jose-Ibaan-Batangas Road, then made a slight left onto the Lipa-Ibaan Road, which becomes Poblacion Road. Then we turned left onto J. Pastor, then right onto Rosario-Ibaan Road, and continued onto Gualberto Avenue. After about 4 km, we made a slight right onto Garcia-Rosario-San Juan-Candelaria Road, then continued onto Gen. Luna Street. We made a right onto Hall Street, and made our way towards San Juan-Laiya Road. When you get to San Juan-Laiya Road, just keep going straight and you’ll pass by several beach resorts. La Luz is all the way in the end, after climbing a hill. You’ll see a huge sign and entrance to your left. The toll fees combined will equate to about Php 300 going to Batangas, and another Php 300 heading back to Manila. Other expenses to take into consideration are the gas (of course), and the required Ecological Fee of Php 20 per person before entering Laiya.

When we arrived in La Luz at about 9:30am, a guard welcomed us and double checked my name on his list. The parking lot will be the first thing you’ll see upon entering, followed by the registration area. Their staff was really friendly and accommodating, and had us escorted down to the resort’s main office to pay our remaining balance and be given instructions. We were then led to our family cabana, which had a great view of the beach. The buffet lunch was to start at 12nn until 2pm, and the merienda would be from 3pm to 5pm.

la luz beach resort laiya batangas

The family cabana was large enough to fit all 12 of us. There were even plugs in case you needed to charge your phone and other electronic gadgets. You can bring chips and other food if you like, but what they don’t allow is bringing beer unless you’re okay to pay a corkage fee. However, they do sell beer at Php 50 per bottle. They also have Tanduay Ice for sale at Php 60 . Softdrinks at 1.5 L were sold at Php 90 .

The first thing we did was swim, of course. I liked how there was a raft in the middle of the beach, which us cousins hung out in. We also tried the Flying Fish, which was priced at Php 2,500 for 15 minutes. Since only six of us could fit the Flying Fish, the Cupcake and one of my cousins switched in the middle of the ride and the other just stayed on the speed boat.

la luz beach resort laiya batangas

la luz beach resort laiya batangas

After lunch, we rented a Kayak for Php 200 (good for one hour) and explored the place, particularly the area near the Rock Formation, which had a breathtaking view of the corals and fishes underwater. It was really, really nice. After this, we had our merienda (the line wasn’t too long this time), then swam a bit more before taking a shower in the Shower Area. The Shower Area is enough to accommodate the day trip goers, but just make sure to bring your own towel and toiletries.

We checked out at around 5:30pm. Since the trip back home would take another three hours or so, we stopped by a gas station along SLEX and had dinner in KFC. My cousins and I had so much fun, and wouldn’t mind going back to La Luz Beach Resort again. Hopefully next time, we can book for an overnight stay.

I was wondering if you ever considered changing the page layout of your site? Its very well written; I love what youve got to say. But maybe you could a little more in the way of content so people could connect with it better. Youve got an awful lot of text for only having 1 or two pictures. Maybe you could space it out better?

Where to stay in Laiya, Batangas: Sabangan Beach Resort

laiya batangas food trip

After biking through coastal areas and up steep mountain roads, it’s always great to just head back to a comfy base to have beer by the beach, enjoy meals, and chill out without having to drive back far to the city the same day.

laiya batangas food trip

Lately, we’ve been combining our bike trips with staycations, so we can do something new when we revisit places we’ve previously been to. While we no longer have the time to go on multi-day bikepacking trips because of work, leisurely bike rides where we can enjoy quick overnight or weekend stays in a resort afterwards are something we can look forward to.

laiya batangas food trip

One weekend this May 2022, to celebrate our wedding anniversary, we went for a scenic bike ride from Laiya to Malabrigo Lighthouse and back, passing by the venue where we had our beach wedding 12 years ago.

laiya batangas food trip

To maximize the bike trip, we stayed in Sabangan Beach Resort , a bike-friendly and pet-friendly beachfront resort, and caught up with high school friends for a mini-reunion and food trip after.

Table of Contents

The area of Laiya in San Juan, Batangas offers a variety of accommodations ranging from budget guest rooms and camping spots to high-end beachfront resorts. It’s one of the top beach destinations for families those traveling by land from Metro Manila because of its relative proximity.

laiya batangas food trip

Sabangan Beach Resort is located along the main road in Laiya, San Juan, Batangas.

Getting here is about a 4 to 5 hour drive from Quezon City depending what route you take. Because of its location and distance from the main highway,  it’s more convenient to get here by private transport.

laiya batangas food trip

Sabangan Beach Resort is one of the more established resorts in the Laiya area. The resort is well designed with a native feel set amid lush surroundings with private villas. The beachfront offers views of Mt. Daguldol in Mindoro. The 6,000 square meter resort offers guests a sanctuary enveloped in nature and rich in the comforts of home.

laiya batangas food trip

The main appeal of the resort is having all the creature comforts with easy access to the beach. You can enjoy the great outdoors, swim, walk along to the far end of the beach. go boating, and enjoy activities like banana boating, kayaking and more, but still have a cozy hotel-style room at night, decent bathroom, and all the meals prepared for you during your stay.

laiya batangas food trip

For those with vehicles, the resort has a 24/7 secure car parking area. I found the resort to be bike-friendly, as we could easily bring our bikes from the parking area to the villas, which had spacious patios where we could  park them even without locking them up when we went to the beach. We were also able to hose off bikes right outside the villa in the footwash area before leaving.

laiya batangas food trip

For those who want to go on vacation with their pets, Sabangan Beach Resort is also pet-friendly. There were several very friendly and healthy-looking resort cats on the premises who joined us for dinner and hung around our villa. We also spotted other guests who brought their pet dogs.

laiya batangas food trip

Sabangan is the very first resort in Laiya to welcome furbabies. Guests are allowed to bring a maximum of up to 3 small to medium breed dogs, who must be secure at all times. Dogs can swim in the beach and enjoy playing on the sand.

laiya batangas food trip

Guests bringing pets must adhere to additional guidelines:

  • Use designated areas for pets to do their business and pick up after them
  • Feed the pets only in the outdoor areas of their room/suite
  • Pets may swim at the beach but not in the pool
  • Ensure that pets are trained to be in public, with good behavior when exposed to other guests

Each unit is fully equipped with a private toilet and bath, hot and cold shower, coffee and tea making facilities, cable TV, Wi-Fi access, and a personal refrigerator.  Rates are also inclusive of breakfast, afternoon snack and dinner.

laiya batangas food trip

We stayed in the Narra B Bungalow, which had two double beds (which could actually fit a 4 people), a clean and modern bathroom, TV, mini-bar.

laiya batangas food trip

The spacious patio had a cozy seating area and sink for hanging out and for keeping bike and beach stuff in so the room doesn’t get sandy. It was relaxing to just hang out there in the patio with view of courtyard.

laiya batangas food trip

Friends were booked at the Yakal 2-bedroom bungalow, which had a spacious patio and great location right in front of the beach.

laiya batangas food trip

Sabangan Beach Resort provides 24/7 security on the beach and CCTV coverage throughout the resort.

For families traveling with with kids, Sabangan Resort has a small swimming pool in a secluded area semi-shaded by trees for those who don’t want to get too sunburnt on the beach. There’s an area where water is shallow for little kids and a 4-foot pool for adults. Pool use is only until 10:00 pm.

laiya batangas food trip

The resort also has a small kids playground area on the premises. Guests can also borrow a volleyball for beach volleyball activities with a minimum deposit. Water sports and boating trips can be arranged for groups.

For those who want to get a massage, the resort supports locally trained therapists and can arrange for massage in rooms by schedule or appointment (P400/hour).

laiya batangas food trip

Dining Options

Accommodations in Sabangan Beach Resort include meals timed for check in and check out. This includes buffet breakfast, merienda, and dinner for all occupants, so there’s no need to go out of the resort or worry about where to eat.

laiya batangas food trip

The buffet is now serviced (not self-serve) with meals served at the Pavilion. During our stay, there are 3 to 4 viands to choose from plus dessert or fresh fruits at every meal. Guests can also get free flowing coffee and refill water bottles and flasks from dispensers at the Pavilion.

laiya batangas food trip

We got to the resort past 6pm because of the long drive from Manila and bad weather, but the staff had set aside our merienda of lomi and turon, which was much appreciated. Dinner on our first night included laing, liempo, chicken, sinigang,  etc. The next day, there was pinakbet, inihaw na manok, halaan soup and more. There was a good variety of dishes to choose from.

laiya batangas food trip

The resort also has a convenience store that sells snacks, beer (P100/bottle for San Miguel Pale Pilsen) and beach essentials.

Lunch is not served at the resort, but guests can order ala carte from the Pavilion or walk/drive to nearby establishments to sample the local cuisine.

laiya batangas food trip

Friends and I ate at Sinsay Shalom Food House , which was a quick drive from the resort. The local eatery specializes in Batangas lomi, bulalo, sisig, crispy pata, silog meals and more.

laiya batangas food trip

Another dining option recommended by the resort owner is Basilio’s Brick Oven Pizza , the first brick oven pizza parlor in San Juan, Batangas. It’s not along the beachfront, but it’s located in San Juan along the main road heading back to Lipa, Batangas, so it’s a possible stopover on your way to the resort or after you check out before driving back to Manila.

Connectivity

The signal for both Globe and Smart was a bit weak in the area. While the resort has WiFi, it only worked in the lobby and not in the rooms. It worked well on our first day, but the signal was very intermittent the day we left when we had to catch up on some work emails and deadlines, which led us to drive out to town a bit with laptops in town just to search for a signal.

Because of connectivity issues, the resort’s credit card and GCash payment options went down during our stay and they could only process cash payments. Thankfully there was an ATM right outside the hotel to withdraw cash. Guests planning to stay here might want to bring enough cash on hand.

For those who are just after relaxation and the beach, and don’t plan to work during their stay (I suggest you don’t), you can still enjoy the cozy rooms, beach, meals and private feel of the resort.

Check out the video below to get a better idea of what the whole resort and other rooms look like. Book rooms here .

Daytrip near manila: playa laiya beach club, batangas.

laiya batangas food trip

The thing about living in the tropics is that you get to go to the beach (almost) any time of the year. So guess how I capped off my blogging duties for 2016? With a trip to Playa Laiya Beach Club, of course! 🙂

Four days before Christmas, after three hours on the road with only two hours or so of sleep, I found myself and my blogger friends away from the city for the day.

laiya batangas food trip

Stepping inside Playa Laiya Beach Club, it has an Asian-inspired look which promises a day of relaxation. They used a lot of wooden elements and employed an open air concept for their cabanas and restaurant.

laiya batangas food trip

Playa Laiya Beach Club has different cabanas that can accommodate from small families to big groups. Choose from a Beach Front Cabana (6-10 pax), Big Cabana (15-20pax), Pool Pavilion (20-25 pax) and the Marketing Pavilion that can hold up to 100 pax.

laiya batangas food trip

After a quick tour around the property, we settled at the Beach Front Cabanas. It was tempting to lie down and nap but we have an exciting day ahead of us! Alas, we went to get ready. I wasn’t able to take a photo of the Bath House interiors (shower area & comfort room) but it was spacious and well-maintained.

There are lockers available for rent at P50 (small) or P150 (big) for your valuables. Towel rentals are also available for a fee in case you forgot to bring one.

laiya batangas food trip

We proceeded to a motor boat that will take us to a small island called Pampang, around 30 minutes away. It was a small paradise mostly made up of big black rocks and trees. Its floor covered with corals of all sizes and shapes instead of fine sand which made it hard to walk on because the corals kept getting into my sandals. I persevered  for a good back drop discovered by my friend Nicole ( ChicMix ).

laiya batangas food trip

The weather was playing with us because it was raining on our way to the island, but the skies cleared doing our stay for photo ops, then it rained again on our way back. I wasn’t that surprised though as a typhoon was a few days away to hit Bicol region.

After a sumptuous seafood lunch, we were chilling by the Infinity Pool (up to 5 feet), taking videos and group photos, while a group of friends were playing beach volleyball with the beach behind them. They also have a Kiddie Pool (up to 3 feet). Proper swimming attire such as bathing suits, rash guards, board shorts and trunks is required.

laiya batangas food trip

The more, the merrier! Hello Ria ( Sugarsmile ), Nicole, Sir Ted ( Wazzup.PH ) and Sir Az!

laiya batangas food trip

There was no jet ski in sight that day so I watched my friends had their fill of fun and adrenaline with Banana Boat and Flying Fish. I happily sat by the beach thinking about the upcoming year, writing on the sand and letting the waves wash away my worries, with baby Ashton who was busy building his sand castle. There was also kayaking and parasailing if you’re not a fan of inflatables.

laiya batangas food trip

All these activities made us hungry and tired but Playa Laiya’s The Sands Restaurant help us beat energy gap 😉

They allow guests to bring in food. You just have to pay the corkage fee of P100/head.

Morning snack

Before heading home we were treated to a relaxing upper body message by the beach – my first time and it was bliss!

laiya batangas food trip

Playa Laiya Beach Club is open from Tuesdays to Sundays from 8AM to 6PM. If you want to catch the sunrise, they accommodate your request but you only have access to your cabana and the beach from 6AM to 8AM. Swimming pool opens at 8AM.

If you intend to stay overnight, you can pitch a tent in the property but only the bath house and The Sands Restaurant will be open. Since night swimming is not allowed, you can start a bon fire and watch the stars!

The resort is part of an exclusive seaside residential community developed by Landco Pacific Corporation and managed by Fuego Hotels and Properties (same with Aquaria and Club Punta Fuego). This is why they do not accommodate walk-ins. No worries because reservation is just an email away, even for non-members! Send a message to Ms. Rem Ynigo at [email protected] and wait for the confirmation. Payment will be settled upon arrival.

Entrance Fee

Admission fee is inclusive of facilities such as the swimming pool and the beach.

The past year especially the second half for me has been incredibly busy with a whirlwind of travels and events. So while we were on official blogger duty, it was nice to relax and catch up with everyone. Thank you Playa Laiya Beach Club c/o Fuego Hotels and Properties and Sir Az for the invite <3

Hi! May I ask how the island hopping works? Where do you inquire, pay, reserve slots, etc? Thanks!

Hello, Justine! I believe you can book the water activities at the reception or by the Bath House. Better if you mention it when you make a reservation. I will try to validate this and get back to you 🙂

by thepinay solobackpacker | Mar 18, 2024 | Batangas , Itinerary , Philippines , SAN JUAN , Tourist Spots | 0 comments

Detailed travel blog about San Juan Batangas Tourist spots and things to do and San Juan Batangas itinerary.

Imagine being conveyed to a different place at the same time, the town of San Juan, Batangas will leave you in awe with its raw appeal and sundry topography.  It is blissfully located at the Southeastern tip of Batangas province. Surprisingly, it remains out of the radar of most tourists except for Laiya.  Delve into this municipality and at the end of your trip you’ll realize that it’s not only lapped by powdery white sand beaches of Laiya, but it is also lavished with natural resources, packed with adventures and water activities, oozing with history, and delicious food.

THINGS TO DO IN SAN JUAN BATANGAS

Here’s my handpicked list of things to do in San Juan Batangas to help you plan your trip.

1.ISLAND HOPPING IN LAIYA (SAN JUAN, BATANGAS) + SNORKELING

Why is it one of the top things to do in San Juan Batangas?

Jagged, meandering, and studded with tropical beaches and craggy coves – San Juan, Batangas is an ideal escape for the weary urbanites.  Its dramatic coastline, especially around Laiya, is shaped by the incessant waves crashing against coral reef deposits.

Laiya has long been a tourist magnet because of its sun-kissed azure water. But did you know you can also go beach-hopping here or what the locals sell as Laiya Island Hopping? So, pack your swimwear, aqua shoes, snorkeling mask, dry bag, and sunscreen, and head to San Juan, Batangas.

san juan batangas things to do: Laiya island hopping

Frolic in the sand and swim in the turquoise waters of a picturesque beach called Lamesang Bato by the locals.  On Google Maps, it is marked as Locoloco Point . It’s not an island, but a beach attached to the mainland. But it is only accessible by boat since the sprawling, arid lands behind it are private properties.

Interestingly, the shape and look of the beaches and coves in Laiya changes drastically depending on the current. I revisited Lamesang Bato a week later and it looked quite different!  I find it more appealing when the tide is high because the aquamarine water highlights the rock formations.

San Juan Batangas Island Hopping

Lamesang Bato in Laiya, San Juan Batangas

Our next stop for the Laiya, San Juan, Batangas Island Hopping Tour is nicknamed Bato na  Gulagod by the locals, but I found it on Google Maps as Alegre , proudly sitting on the other side of the popular Laiya White Beach. It exudes the vibe of an isolated enclave frozen in time, where you’ll be dwarfed by the sheer-sided cliff embracing its coast.  And what makes Bato na Gulagod beach unique is, it is dappled with natural coral deposit basins where the cerulean seawater gushes in.  I reckon if it’s high tide, visitors can swim in these pools that occur naturally.  Bato na Gulagod may not be as mesmeric as the tropical palm-fringed beach cliches, but if you’re seeking a secluded seaside escape in Batangas, away from the madding crowd, you landed in the right place.

San Juan Batangas Island Hopping

Bato na Gulagod

After Laiya beach-hopping, the last stop of island hopping is snorkeling.  Plunge into the cobalt sea wearing your snorkeling gear and discover the iridescent marine life of San Juan, Batangas.  The natural coral reefs near the coast have been classified as protected sanctuary by DENR.

san juan batangas things to do: island hopping in Laiya

TRAVEL TIPS:

  • The beaches here are speckled with coral reef deposits that could hurt your feet. Be extra careful, wear sturdy aqua shoes or Crocs. If you’re traveling with seniors/elderly, and kids, assist them.
  • There are no restaurants on the islands, only make-shift stores that sell halo-halo, chips, and soft drinks. If you plan to picnic or have lunch on one of the beach coves in Laiya, bring a packed lunch. Please include the boatman and assistant on your packed meal.
  • Bring your own water flask to keep yourself hydrated.
  • We rented a boat for island hopping at Sigayan Bay Resort.  I recommend it as a jumping-off point for island hopping in Laiya.   The boatmen there are helpful, and their boats are just right enough to carry 10 persons. They accept walk-ins or you can contact them in advance through the following numbers:
  • Jhopet: 0968 622 6279
  • Leboy: 0928 576 6512
  • Start your San Juan, Batangas island-hopping tour as early as 8:00 AM to avoid the crowd, especially if you’re going there on a weekend. The sea is also calmer in the morning, and the lighting is better for photos and drone videos, not too harsh.

3.RESORT STAYCATION

Why is it one of the top San Juan Batangas things to do?

Solmera Coast San Juan Batangas

Early morning in Solmera Coast San Juan Batangas

Most tourists heading to San Juan, Batangas go to Laiya to bask in its cerulean beach.  Others just want to R & R and lounge in beach resorts that strive to satisfy their every wish and whim.

san juan blog 42

During our recent trip to San Juan, Batangas, we stayed at Solmera Coast in Brgy. Subukin and Brgy. Calubcub II. It is blissfully sandwiched between San Juan town and Laiya, about 13 minutes away, thus providing ample opportunity for road tripping. Solmera Coast is a nature-inspired beachfront condotel development by DMCI Homes Leisure Residences that is soon to rise in this thriving municipality.

Biking around Solmera Coast

By the time we arrived at Solmera Coast, it was sweltering hot since it’s summer. Thankfully, we were soothed by the warm greetings of the staff at the front desk as they gestured to us to take a comfy seat and handed us fresh wet towels and welcome drinks.

Solmera Coast

The sprawling Solmera Coast is tranquil  and secluded and fringed by soaring palm trees and  beautifully manicured lawns and tropical gardens. I stayed in one of their spacious Asian-inspired breezy villas set by the sea.

Solmera Coast Batangas room

It is decorated with modest and soothing white walls and warm wood  and spruced up with covetable furniture.  A modern minimalist room is what I dig these days. There’s nothing like getting away from a mess to calm an anxious mind.

Solmera Coast Batangas

But perhaps my favorite experience here is waking up to a mesmeric sunrise view over the pink sky, which I can watch directly from my room with floor to ceiling glass windows.  It’s a dreamy escape.

Solmera Coast’s tempting, aquamarine-tiled infinity pool’s focal point is a powdery sand beach with a view of tawny mountains on the side.  They can also provide bikes and kayaks to get you occupied.

4. choose your adventure at laiya adventure park.

Tucked in a dense, tropical jungle, Laiya Adventure Park is oozing with outdoor adventures to test your stamina, you can try wall climbing, aerial walk, zipline, the giant swing, etc.

SAN JUAN BATANGAS THINGS TO DO: RIDE THE ATV

Getting ready for ATV Ride at Laiya Adventure Park

I like doing adventure activities, but when opportunities present themselves, sometimes I cower.  Like when I tried the free fall here, which turned out to be manageable, because the string attached to my back somehow pulls me back. I guess to stop me from falling hard onto the cemented floor.

I did enjoy the ATV ride. A bit intimidating at first, but it was fun once you get used to the trail.

The zipline was a breeze and since we did it late in the afternoon, I could feel the fresh wind blowing on my face without the harsh sunbeams.  There were also kingfishers sitting quietly on the zipline enjoying the mountain scenery draped by dense forest or perhaps waiting to catch a fish from a nearby river.

san juan batangas blog: Laiya Adventure Park zipline

Laiya Adventure Park Zipline

5. WANDER THE HERITAGE HOUSES IN SAN JUAN, BATANGAS

Why is it one of the top tourist spots in San Juan Batangas?

San Juan, Batangas may not often grace the pages of history books, but the rich cultural heritage of this sprawling town will undoubtedly seduce travelers thirsty for history.  Its town center is dappled with well-preserved ancestral houses.  Tourists can wander the stately age-old houses here since most of these structures are condensed around the St. Juan Nepomuceno Church.  Visitors can go inside some age-old houses if you inform them of your visit in advance. See the contact details below.

Here’s some of the significant ancestral house and heritage structures in San Juan, Batangas:

  • Benito Marasigan Ruins and Museum
  • Casa Louella
  • Casa Soledad
  • White House San Juan (Aguedo Mercado Mansion)
  • Leon Mercado House (Pink House)
  • Bautista House in Pinagbayanan

BENITO MARASIGAN RUINS AND MUSEUM

SAN JUAN BATANGAS TOURIST SPOT: BENITO MARASIGAN RUINS & MUSEUM

The 3-storey ancestral house of Don Benito and Soledad Marasigan of the prominent Marasigan Family, in Classical Revival architectural style, was built sometime in the 1930’s to represent the boom of the coconut industry.

SAN JUAN BATANGAS HERITAGE TOUR

Unfortunately, in 2009, the massive house was burned down into ruins. The fire reportedly started on the 3 rd floor when the sun glowed directly on the glass window and reflected on the piles of papers and decaying wood creating fire. Today, only the restored ground floor serves as a museum, decorated with old photos, artworks, and intricately carved chairs and cabinets from the olden days.

  • Open Hours: Daily 8:00 AM – 6:00 PM

CASA LOUELLA

Our 2 nd stop for our San Juan, Batangas Heritage Tour was another classical mansion called Casa Louella. Built in 1900’s and originally owned by the Treviño-Magtibay family . It is said that 2 families live on each floor, like a separate household.  Casa Louella was eventually bought by Vicente Lecaroz , the former Mayor of San Juan. But when the Lecaroz family moved to the US, they sold the house and it was acquired by Custodio (Papay Ocus) and Guadalupe (Lola Lucing) Ona , who currently owns the restored house.

SAN JUAN BATANGAS TOURIST SPOTS: CASA LOUELLA

The floor, the ceiling, the pillars, and walls are still original. The current owner just decided to remodel the house, opened the bedrooms downstairs and turned them into a living room, and the entrance to the house, which used to be on the side where the dining room is now, was moved in front. All the classic-looking furniture in the house now is new. The painting of the original house is displayed in the living room. While the photos of the current owners, the Ona Family are on display on the 2 nd floor.  Today, Casa Louella is open to the public and accepts guests for accommodation, small events, weddings, prenup shoots.

CASA SOLEDAD

Casa Soledad, a traditional bahay-na-bato style house initially owned by Santos Luz Lopez and Maria Mercado (Dr. Jose Rizal’s relatives) is another worth-visiting heritage house in San Juan, Batangas.  The couple had 4 children, Don Miguel Lopez (former mayor of San Juan), Arsenio Lopez , Soledad Lopez , and Leonor Lopez .  The house was inherited by Leonor since she was the youngest, but Soledad bought it from her when she got married.

Today, Casa Soledad is managed by the 4 th generation Lopez-Tioseco siblings .  Brando L. Tioseco and Anna L. Tioseco proudly toured us around the classic Bahay-na-Bato of their grandparents.  While most houses that we toured in San Juan were heavily restored or remodeled, what I like about Casa Soledad is, it still has that archaic ancestral house atmosphere.

san juan blog 79

Our first stop is the silong (basement) of the house, which is now covered in Machuca tiles.  Interestingly, the house is still supported by massive wooden pillars, which is typical of old houses back then. The furniture, art pieces, and other objects inside Casa Soledad are mostly antiques.

san juan blog 83

A carved-wooden staircase leads to the spacious living room upstairs, where antique photographs with age-old frames are hanging. A must-see in the neck-swiveling life-size foto- óleo painting of Leonor where she’s wearing a filipiniana dress adorned with real sequins.  This artform is popular in the mid-19 th to 20 th century where black and white photos are enhanced by applying oil paint to make it realistic.

Interestingly, also on display here are prehistoric burial jars and poorly fired earthenware unearthed from the archaeological site in Calubcob, Segundo.

  • Address: De Villa corner Mojica Street San Juan, Batangas

WHITE HOUSE SAN JUAN (AGUEDO MERCADO MANSION)

This elegant white house mansion was built in 1934.  The White House San Juan was originally owned by Aguedo Mercado and Pilar Marasigan, hence the original name Aguedo Mercado House. It used to be a Japanese-era hang out place that was safe from destruction during WWII.  The 4 th generation Mercado family lived here until the current owners – Neil Marundan and family acquired it in 2021.

san juan blog 82

Almost all parts of the house are original like the machuca tiles, the wooden walls, and pillars (except for the comfort room and kitchen which looked like the kitchens used on cooking shows).  Once you step inside, you wouldn’t really feel it’s an old house, the way they restored the wooden floor, cabinets, chairs, and tables that are made of narra, balayong and mulawin wood is by stripping the natural wood color and applying lacquer to give the wood a high gloss finish. While all furniture inside the White House San Juan were refurbished, they also added some modern appliances like aircon and TV and projector to the mini-conference room, which was previously a music room.

CASA LEON (THE PINK HOUSE)

san juan blog 95

This isn’t part of our San Juan, Batangas Heritage Tour, because the house isn’t available for public viewing. This well-preserved “Pink House” is known as Casa Leon, the house of Leon Quizon Mercado , also  known as “Kapitan Leon,” a Katipunero from San Juan, Batangas and relative of Dr. Jose Rizal, our National Hero.

Based on anecdotes,  at age 17, he joined the revolution and also joined the Philippine-American War. After the war, Leon became a prominent farmer  who invested in coconut plantations in Naga City and was nicknamed the “Coconut King of Batangas”.

You can easily find the Leon Mercado House around 2 blocks away from the St. Nepomuceno Church, at the corner of Burgos Street and Castillo Street.

6. VISIT THE SAN JUAN NEPOMUCENO CHURCH AND MUSEUM

Why is it one of the top San Juan Batangas places to see?

san juan batangas church

Towering over Poblacion San Juan is the San Juan Nepomuceno Church named after the town’s patron saint – St. John Nepomuceno, the patron saint of Czechoslovakia and “martyr of the confessional”. His feast is celebrated every May 16th.   He was nicknamed such, because it is believed that St. John refused to reveal to King Wenceslau IV the queen’s dying confession.

san juan blog 101

The church was originally built in San Juan de Bolboc , present day Brgy. Pinagbayanan , from nipa, bamboo, and palm trees. Eventually, the church’s structure was overhauled with stone under Father Damaso Mojica. Still, a devastating flood in 1883 destroyed the church.  So, Fray Celestino Yoldi, moved the settlement from Brgy. Pinagbayan to Calitcalit , present day San Juan.

san juan blog 103

The church was then moved to its Calicalit (present site) in 1894, and the modern belfry tower was added somewhere between 1928 – 1935, that is why it doesn’t seem to match the Baroques-architectural style of the church’s façade. The massive belfry donated by Don Francisco Marasigan which was used before is now on display in front of the church. San Juan Nepomuceno Church underwent a major renovation in 1995 which led to the San Juan Nepomuceno Church we see today.

san juan blog 105

Interestingly, beside the church is an old parish convent built in 1894 by Augustinian Recollects priest Celestino Yoldi. This extensive convent houses St. John Nepomuceno Museum where a collection of ancient church artifacts, altar utensils such as chalices, censer and boat, and candle sticks, and ecclesiastical vestments are on display.

7. CHECK OUT THE OLD SAN JUAN CHURCH RUINS

Why is it one of the top  attractions in San Juan Batangas?

San Juan, Batangas is oozing with history and many archaeological excavations have been conducted here.  The original town was a coastal village known as San Juan de Bocboc located in the present-day Brgy.Pinagbayanan .

8. FOOD TRIP IN SAN JUAN, BATANGAS

san juan batangas bonete

  • Bonete – Our favorite food in Batangas is none other than Bonete or Pan de Bonete. This hot bonnet shaped Pinoy style dinner roll is best eaten hot and can be dipped on hot tsokolate or kapeng barako. You can buy this in local bakeries downtown. We bought it from the bakery fronting Alps Bus Terminal in Poblacion San Juan, and it was so finger-licking good!

Loming Batangas

Loming Batangas at Lomihan sa Pulang Bato

  • Loming Batangas – Batangas is known for its mouth-watering noodle dish called Batangas Lomi. Its origin is traced to To Kim Eng, who is believed to have first served the lomi to his mahjong buddies back in 1968. Loming Batangas has thick, rich soup loaded with a variety of toppings such as egg, chicharon, fishball, belly strips, pork heart, liver, Chinese kikiam, etc. The best lomihan in San Juan is the Lomihan sa Pulang Bato .
  • Gotong Batangas – Batangas has its own version of goto, and it’s different from the typical goto (rice porridge) that we Pinoys are used to because it doesn’t use rice. Batangas goto originated in Lipa and is more like a soup dish.  It is composed of beef and cow innards such as beef tripe (honeycomb and blanket tripe), beef heart, bouillon, tendon, and intestines.

San Juan Batangas Things to Do: Food Trip

Gotong Batangas at Kuya Oliver’s Gotohan

  • In San Juan, we tried the Gotong Batangas overload at the Kuya Oliver’s Gotohan , a famous gotohan by Oliver Marasigan.  It was okay, since the beef was really boiled well, it was soft.  The soup is tasty, but I prefer thick soup. To complement the dish, they also provide kalamansi, deep fried garlic with chili. I haven’t tasted the Gotong Batangas in Lipa, so for a first timer, this is good for me, but nothing special.  But my cousins loved it for its price. You can also try Gotong Batangas at Marimar Restaurant. I was told they’re the original restaurant that serves this soup. See more details on the Where to Eat Section.

san juan blog 88

  • Champeni (Chempeni, sampeni, or sampeni)  – This is a Batangas dish composed of goat or beef innards. It tastes like kalderetang kambing and is usually eaten on pulutan or as a dish. We had it at Novicz Eatery along San Juan – Laiya Road.

Champeni / Chempeni ng Batangas

Champeni / Chempeni ng Batangas at Novicz Eatery

  • Batangas Seafood – San Juan, Batangas has one of the longest shorelines in the Philippines. The area from Brgy. Baraulte down to Brgy. Catmon are suitable for aquaculture. Hence, the abundance of seafood in town.
  • Everyone wants to eat a good seafood, and no one does seafood better in San Juan, Batangas than Four Corners Seafood and Sizzling Restaurant along San Juan – Laiya Road. See more details under Where to Eat Section below.

San Juan Food Trip: Seafood Fiesta

Seafood Fiesta at Four Corners Seafood and Sizzling Restaurant

  • Four Corners Seafood and Sizzling Restaurant seafood dishes are made from freshest products. They stand out because they don’t use preservatives. We ordered their bestseller – the Seafood Fiesta Dish , a mix of different kinds of seafood like crab, squid, fish, shrimps, and clams cooked in butter and secret spices from the Middle East and Israel, truly a feast fit for a queen! They’re tempting and enticing; you’ll surely drool just by looking at it! The sauce is thick and tremendously flavorsome, you’ll come out with a full stomach and grinning with pleasure.
  • Another personal favorite is their seafood hotpot boiling in a pot full of vegetables, fish, mussels, clams, and prawns. It’s a perfect comfort food and hangover food.
  • Cap off your seafood meal with their creamy and mouthwatering leche flan!

Suman Tamales Batangas

Suman tamales at Old San Juan Restaurant

  • Suman Tamales   –  Like a regular rice cake made of glutinous rice wrapped in banana leaf but with shredded chicken or meat, peanuts, and slices of boiled sliced egg or salted egg. We had this at Old San Juan Restaurant.

san juan batangas food trip : Ben Halo halo

Ben’s halo-halo

  • Halo Halo –  If you’re craving a rich, creamy halo-halo, after being soaked in the sun for hours, head to Ben’s Halo-Halo. This originated in Laguna, so it’s not actually a Batangas food.  I’m not a halo-halo fan, but this is good for me. Ben’s halo-halo uses shaved gelato ice, making it deliciously thick and creamy.  Needs a bit more toppings, but definitely one of the best I’ve tried!

9. MANGROVE TOUR IN SAN JUAN, BATANGAS

Why is it one of the top  things to do in San Juan Batangas?

san juan batangas mangroves

For a change of scenery, you can also go on Mangrove Tour in San, Juan Batangas .  You can rent an outrigger boat at Brgy.Poctol where you will be toured around a small mangrove river up to Tayabas Bay and return via Malaking Ilog River. The town is blessed with a sprawling mangroves area; reportedly, they have around 496 hectares of mangroves and swamp areas.  Most of these trees are predominantly finger type mangroves.

10. BIRD WATCHING IN SAN JUAN, BATANGAS

Lavished by natural resources San Juan, Batangas is an ideal location for bird watching .  The azure sea with rich marine life, lush forest, sprawling mangroves forest, swamp areas, and placid rivers, serves as habitats of endemic, migratory, and resident birds. I was able to see a common kingfisher (Alcedo atthis) sitting on the wirelines of Laiya Adventure Park, as well as a blue-tailed bee eater.  Fellow travel blogger Ferdz Decena has a more in-depth blog on bird watching in San Juan. If you’re visiting San Juan soon. Here’s a sample San Juan Batangas Itinerary for 3 days and 2 nights. Perfect for a long weekend trip. SAN JUAN BATANGAS TIPS AND REMINDERS

  • Wear aqua shoes or sandals on beaches during the Laiya Island hopping tour as there are coral reef deposits that could hurt your feet.
  • As in most beaches, sea urchins are present in snorkeling sites, so wear aqua shoes or full-foot fins when snorkeling and please do not step on corals.
  • No fish feeding during snorkeling, please.
  • Bring a dry bag to protect your cameras and waterproof pouch for your phone. Or much better if you just bring an underwater camera or action camera for snorkeling and other water sports.
  • Bring refillable water bottle to keep yourself hydrated.
  • Almost everything is on cash basis here so stack up cash. There are ATMs in downtown San Juan and at 7Eleven.
  • San Juan, Batangas is tourist-friendly and generally safe for visitors. But as in all places, do not leave your things unattended during island hopping tour. Double check your things to make sure you are not leaving anything behind. I left my shades and Tommy Jeans sandals. I got the shades back from Lamesang Bato 1st stop because the locals manning the island took care of it, but the sandals I left at the 2nd stop Lamesang Bato, was already gone. Another tourist from the boat that arrived after we left  may have picked it up according to the locals manning the beach.
  • Practice the LNT Principle. Leave no trace. Dispose your trash properly. Do Not collect sands and shells.
