Lainey Wilson Has Her Signature Country Flare In Full Force On Fourth Studio Album, ‘Bell Bottom Country’

lainey wilson tour jordan ny

Bell Bottom Country is my kinda country.

Lainey Wilson’s fourth studio album is officially out everywhere today, and as she puts it, it certainly is “country with a flare.”

She released three singles in the lead up to today, including “Watermelon Moonshine,” “Heart Like A Truck,”   and “Live Off,” which are all fanstatsic and show off the variety of her range in terms of vocal ability and writing chops.

The Louisiana native has truly had one hell of a year, which she understandably called a rewarding “roller coaster” of a past 12 months or so:

“This past year has been such a roller coaster – it’s truly been one of the most rewarding and challenging of my career. We’ve worked so hard on this album, and I’m so proud of it.

I can’t wait to headline my first tour next year and play all my new music across the country.”

Lainey was named the ACM New Artist of The Year (along with Parker McCollum) in March, scored a new roll on Paramount’s hit series of Yellowstone Season 5 , and more recently was honored as CMT’s Breakout Artist of the Year.

And with Lainey’s obvious talent and easy-to-love, outgoing personality, I’d be more than willing to say this is all just the very beginning of her.

She’s worked so incredibly hard and done whatever it takes to realize all of her success so far too, which just makes me love and respect her that much more.

So without further ado, let’s get into all the good stuff on Bell Bottom Country , because you’re gonna want to add this one to your playlist ASAP.

“Those Boots”

“Those Boots” is the easy standout to me.

A sweet tribute to her dad and how his dirty boots became a distinctive memory in her life growing up, I think there’s something in here many of us can relate to:

“Those boots, they walk right with the Lord Those boots would only drive a Ford Those boots made a damn good living Spun my mama all around the kitchen Those boots will never go out of style One day they’ll walk me down the aisle I pray everyday, one day I will Find a man to fill Those boots”

I mean, I honestly couldn’t tell you the last time a song made me physically shed a few tears, but I had a few rolling this morning listenting to this song the first time.

And knowing how much Lainey and her family have been through this year, after her father was hospitalized with serious complications from Diabetic Ketoacidosis and is now doing much better, it just hits a little bit harder.

It’s pretty obvious that she’s definitely a daddy’s girl when you listen to this song, and I love hearing how much love and respect she has for him and the lessons he taught her growing up in these beautiful lyrics:

“Weak-End”

This one is a much slower, more subdued tune where we find Lainey admitting that she’s trying to deal with a heartbreak by going out on the weekend, in an attempt to cure the sadness she felt all week.

I think it’s a bit of a different topic and subject matter than we’re used to hearing from her too, and also includes a fun play on words with solid writing and great production.

“Hold My Halo”

This one finds Lainey in her wheelhouse.

A fun, upbeat country jam about letting loose and having fun after a long day of hard work, she sets her halo aside for a little while and lets go of her inhibitions along with it.

“What’s Up (What’s Going On)”

She also included a country-fied version of 4 Non Blondes’ hit “What’s Up (What’s Going On),” which is simply fantastic.

But don’t just take my word for it, go dive into Miss Lainey’s entire fantastic catalog of songs, because she’s the next big thing in country music… for damn good reason.

She’s a million percent country, writes from the heart, and brings her own flare to it all, making her a totally unique artist that is blazing her own trail and doing it the right way.

Just this morning, she also announced her headlining Country With A Flare tour that’s set to kick off in January, so make sure you check out a show when she rolls through your town in 2023:

Lainey Wilson returning to Syracuse after record-breaking NYS Fair concert

concert

Country star Lainey Wilson is returning to Syracuse after breaking the record for the largest crowd in New York State Fair concert history.

Wilson will headline a June 21, 2024, show at the newly renamed Empower Federal Credit Union Amphitheater at Lakeview (formerly St. Joe’s Amp). Special guests Ian Munsick and Zach Top will open the show at 7 p.m.

Tickets go on sale Friday, Oct. 27, at 10 a.m. through Live Nation . Presale tickets will be available starting Monday.

It will be a triumphant return for Wilson, who drew an estimated 53,200 fans to the NYS Fair’s Suburban Park stage in August. That crushed the previous NYS Fair record of 43,000 by Nelly in 2022, and set a new record for the largest concert crowd in Syracuse history — eclipsing The Who’s 47,319 at the Carrier Dome (now JMA Wireless Dome) in 1982.

However, her crowd will be limited at the Amp as the venue’s official capacity is 17,500. She’s the second concert booked for the 2024 season so far; fellow country singer Jordan Davis will perform on July 18.

Wilson’s upcoming “Country’s Cool Again” tour dates include one more Upstate New York stop on June 20 at Saratoga Performing Arts Center (SPAC) in Saratoga Springs.

Wilson’s star power has risen dramatically in a short amount of time. She opened for Morgan Wallen at the Syracuse amphitheater last year, won ACM and CMA awards, appeared on the hit TV series “Yellowstone,” got her song “Heart Like a Truck” featured in a Dodge Ram commercial, and sold out her own concerts including a February performance at Keg’s Canalside in Jordan. Last month, she became the first artist in Country Music Association history to top the nominations list in her first two appearances on the ballot and just the fourth artist in CMA history to score nine or more nominations in a single year, after Merle Haggard (nine in 1970), Alan Jackson (10 in 2002), and Miranda Lambert (nine in both 2010 and 2014).

Lainey Wilson Concert Tour 2023: Dates & Tickets

Lainey Wilson enjoyed a stellar 2022, and she's taking that momentum with her on the road in 2023. She's embarking on a nationwide Country With A Flare tour, which kicked off on January 4.

It will take the two-time CMA winner and Yellowstone star to Wyoming, New York, Arizona, Tennessee, North Carolina, Florida and more. Perhaps unsurprisingly, given the immense success of Lainey's latest album, Bell Bottom Country , the tour swiftly sold out.

In mid-March, after a stellar run of packed-out shows and an unforgettable appearance at the UK and Ireland's C2C Festival 2023, Lainey Wilson confirmed she'd be playing her first ever headlining show at The Mohegan Sun Arena in Uncasville, Connecticut .

In April, Lainey announced another she'd be ticking another venue off her bucket list, with a headlining performance lined up at Colorado's iconic Red Rocks Amphitheatre on September 26.

Here, you'll find all the latest updates and show announcements for Lainey Wilson's 2023 Concert Tour as they are announced.

Lainey Wilson recently gave ticket-holders a taste of what they can expect on tour with an electric performance of ‘Heart Like A Truck’ at Nashville's Big Bash on New Year's Eve .

Shortly after this, on January 2, Lainey sang her 2021 ode to Louisiana, ‘LA’ , while standing atop the Louisiana Travel Celebration Riverboat during Pasadena's annual Rose Parade.

Her 2023 tour will feature an array of anthems from her acclaimed 2022 album, Bell Bottom Country , from the quietly addictive ‘Live Off’ to the small-town anthem, ‘Hillbilly Hippie’. Fans will also be excited to hear Lainey perform her first No. 1 hit, ‘What A Man Oughta Know’.

Any avid watchers of the hit TV series, Yellowstone , will be keen for the Louisiana native to perform ‘New Friends’ and ‘Smell Like Smoke’, both of which have featured in the Season 5 soundtrack . As well as playing a musical role in the neo-Western series, Lainey also made her on-screen debut in the latest season as a new addition to the cast, Abby.

The Country With A Flare tour, which is sponsored by Stella Rosa Wine Future Is Female , didn't take long to sell out. In an Instagram post, Lainey expressed her gratitude for fans' support of her first headlining tour, and underlined that they should expect fireworks from her set.

Each of the originally announced dates will be opened by Ben Chapman, while a number will also feature Meg McRee and Leah Blevins.

Due to high demand, Lainey added an extra show at The Tabernacle in Atlanta, Georgia. This additional set will be supported by Colby Acuff and Tyler Dial. More recently, after The Tabernacle show sold out, Lainey announced another date in Atlanta, Georgia, at Coca-Cola Roxy on April 14, which will also feature Ben Chapman and Harper O‘Neill.

After the Country With A Flare tour concludes at the end of March, Lainey will then join up with Luke Combs for the US and Canadian leg of his 2023 World Tour . Lainey previously supported Luke on his 2022 US dates, and alongside Jordan Davis and Danielle Bradbury, pranked the ‘Beer Never Broke My Heart’ hitmaker on the final night of the tour.

However, Luke isn't the only big-name headliner that'll receive support from Lainey Wilson in 2023, with Lainey set to open for Eric Church on a series of his Outsiders Revival tour dates in August.

Lainey will also take the stage at a slew of festivals in 2023, including the UK's C2C Festival in March, as well as Barefoot Country Music Fest , Country Jam USA , Carolina Country Music Fest and more.

How did Lainey Wilson break NYS Fair concert record? And how do they calculate crowd size?

  • Updated: Aug. 25, 2023, 8:11 a.m. |
  • Published: Aug. 24, 2023, 11:14 a.m.

concert

Lainey Wilson just broke the record for the largest crowd in New York State Fair concert history, drawing a whopping 53,200 country fans to Suburban Park on Wednesday night.

It smashed the previous record of 43,000, set by rapper Nelly just a year ago at the same stage, and bucked the trend of hip-hop becoming the biggest draw at the NYS Fair. It’s also nearly double the previous record for the largest country concert at the New York State Fair, when Florida Georgia Line played to 31,500 fairgoers at Chevy Court in 2013. (Heads up: Tyler Hubbard is playing Suburban Park on Aug. 29.)

That raises a lot of questions: Who is Lainey Wilson? How did she break the record, and by so much? And how do they calculate crowd size at a free concert, anyway? Let us explain.

Wilson, 31, is one of the hottest artists in country music right now. She won Best New Artist and Female Vocalist of the Year at the CMA Awards last year and won four awards at this year’s ACM Awards, including Album of the Year and Female Artist of the Year.

She’s a singer-songwriter known for hits like “Things a Man Oughta Know,” “Heart Like a Truck” (which appeared in a Ram truck commercial), “Watermelon Moonshine,” “Wait in the Truck” (with Hardy), “Never Say Never” (with Cole Swindell), “Save Me” (with Jelly Roll), and a cover of 4 Non Blondes’ “What’s Up (What’s Going On).” Five of her songs have reached the top 10 on the country charts, and she also appeared on multiple episodes of Kevin Costner’s popular TV series, “Yellowstone,” performing “Smell Like Smoke” as Abby on the show.

concert

Lainey Wilson performs on the Suburban Park stage on opening day of the New York State Fair, Geddes, N.Y., Wednesday, August 23, 2023. Scott Schild | [email protected] Scott Schild | [email protected]

Here’s the wild thing: She’s not a crossover artist (yet) like Morgan Wallen and Luke Combs — none of her songs have hit the top 25 on the Billboard Hot 100 — and she’s not a household name (yet) like Blake Shelton, Carrie Underwood and Tim McGraw. If you don’t listen to country music often, you could easily ask “Who?” and still be bewildered by the huge crowd at the Fair.

“This is absolutely insane,” Wilson said at one point, looking out at the sea of people.

But it’s not insane, and here’s why.

Wilson is a fantastic performer. She sounds better live than on her albums, with a voice that soars all the way to the back of the crowd and a great blend of retro and modern country with Southern rock that she calls “Bell Bottom Country.” (The sound at Suburban Park is extremely well put together so you can hear everything, even past the pond at the back of the Midway.) She talks to her fans, takes selfies with them, signs autographs, and thanks them for dressing up in hats and bell bottoms. She smiles constantly, spreads positive messages for young girls about self-acceptance, and speaks earnestly and humbly about growing up in Louisiana and pursuing a music career in Nashville.

concert

The New York State Fair also booked Wilson at exactly the right time, like when Bruno Mars performed in 2011 (35,000 at Chevy Court) or A Boogie Wit Da Hoodie in 2018 (40,000 at Chevy Court). She’s been building her audience steadily over the past few years, opening for Wallen at his sold-out St. Joseph’s Health Amphitheater at Lakeview last summer and selling out her own “Country with a Flare” show at Kegs Canalside in Jordan this past February. So when there’s a chance to see these artists for free — NYS Fair concerts are free with admission, which is just $6 (and free for kids under 12 and seniors 65 and over) — thousands will seize the opportunity.

Other factors come into play, too. The weather was “Goldilocks” perfect Wednesday night (not too hot or cold), there were no competing shows at St. Joe’s Amp or other major venues, and she had the ideal timeslot of 8 p.m. at the Fair’s biggest stage. (On a weekday, that’s important for jobs; Salt-N-Pepa had 16,000 fans at Chevy Court at 6 p.m., but could’ve easily had more with an 8 p.m. performance.)

The NYS Fair also sometimes dilutes crowds by booking too many shows of one genre, like classic rock or country. If there’s only one or two big shows in your genre of choice, you’re more likely to make sure that’s the day you go to the NYS Fair. That’s not the case this year, as many genres and eras are well-represented ; other country concerts on the 2023 schedule include Matt Stell (Aug. 27, 6 p.m. at Chevy Court), Tyler Hubbard (Aug. 29, 8 p.m. at Suburban Park), Chapel Hart (Aug. 30, 6 p.m. at Chevy Court), Lee Greenwood (Aug. 31, 6 p.m. at Chevy Court), Danielle Bradbery (Sept. 1, 2 p.m. at Suburban Park) and Elvie Shane (Sept. 3, 2 p.m. at Suburban Park) — but only Wilson and Hubbard are likely a must-see for modern country fans.

OK, but how do they come up with crowd size numbers?

Attendance at free concerts is estimated by the New York State Fair using a formula that largely centers on estimating crowd sizes in various sections of Chevy Court and Suburban Park, and then adding them up.

In 2018, fair officials showed how Chevy Court is broken up into grids, including the seating area, grassy areas surrounding the seats, the courtyard by the Chevy Court Pavilion, the paved areas in front of the Center of Progress Building and the Dairy Products building. At least three staffers do the counting, accounting for circumstances such as traffic that may force some concert-goers to be late, and they compare figures during or after the second half of a performance. Then-acting director Troy Waffner told syracuse.com | The Post-Standard that estimating the crowd in each section as a percentage of the maximum capacity figure leads to a final number that’s likely accurate within five percent.

All of the crowd estimates are done the same way, too, so even if you want to disagree with the exact numbers, you can’t argue with certain shows being bigger than others — especially when it’s 10,000 more than the previous record. Atta girl, Lainey.

Here are the top 20 largest crowds in New York State Fair concert history:

Country superstar lainey wilson to play at the great new york state fair on opening day.

With her signature sound and bell bottom flare, Wilson has become an artist to watch with hit songs including “Heart Like a Truck,” “Things a Man Oughta Know,” and “Watermelon Moonshine,” ranking on Top Country radio stations, while her recent collaborations with Hardy (“wait in the truck”) and Cole Swindell (“Never Say Never”) are also in regular rotation.

Fresh off of hosting the Country Music Association (CMA) Festival last week, Wilson was the most awarded and most nominated female artist at the Academy of Country Music (ACM) and CMT Country Music Awards this spring. In May, she brought home four ACM Awards: Female Artist of the Year, Album of the Year for Bell Bottom Country, and Music Event of the Year and Visual Media of the Year for “Wait in the Truck.” Meanwhile, at April’s CMT Music Awards, Lainey took home awards for Female Video of the Year and Collaborative Video of the Year.

“We couldn’t be more excited to have Lainey Wilson join us on Opening Day of the 2023 Great New York State Fair. We were really fortunate to be able to book her when we did,” Sean Hennessey, Interim Fair Director, said in a news release. “Lainey was pretty well known in the country music world last year at this time but in the last six months especially, her star has experienced a meteoric surge to superstardom. And, we have a fun fact to share: Lainey is also one of our most requested artists on social media. So, we anticipate many of our Instagram and Facebook followers will be extra excited about this announcement too.”

Like all acts who appear as part of the Chevrolet Music Series, Lainey Wilson’s performance is included with Fair admission. Admission tickets – expected to go on sale early in July – is $6 for adults, and free for those who are 65 years and older and 12 years and younger.

In total, the Chevrolet Music Series will feature 48 acts performing at Chevy Court and Suburban Park. With the Lainey Wilson announcement, The Fair is now two-thirds of the way through announcing its musical line-up.

All acts announced thus far are provided below, and at pages dedicated to Chevy Court and Suburban Park on the Fair’s website.
